De meeste werken zijn unieke etsen op papier, al dan niet overgezet op doek en al dan niet gehoogd of beschilderd met acrylverf.

De techniek van alle Night Drawings (p. 17–51) bestaat uit mixed media, contékrijt, potlood, acryl e.a.

Most of the works are single-print etchings on paper, some of them put on canvas and some of them painted or heightened in acrylic paint.

Fred Bervoets werkt nu bijna een halve eeuw samen met de Antwerpse galerie De Zwarte Panter. In zijn carrière heeft hij in een constante lijn van hoge intensiteit en grote kwaliteit talrijke periodes gekend en verschillende reeksen gerealiseerd.

Zijn oeuvre wordt in binnen- en buitenland getoond en als belangrijk erkend. Het grondige essay in dit boek van dr. Paul Huvenne, ereadministrateur-generaal van het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen, over het werk van 2016 tot 2019, en het inspirerende artikel van Bart De Baere, directeur van het Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerpen (M HKA), in het vorige boek over het oeuvre van 2013 tot 2015 schetsen niet alleen Bervoets’ unieke positie op de actuele kunstscene maar plaatsen hem ook in een historische context, met een referentie aan Pieter Bruegel.

Fred Bervoets has been collaborating with De Zwarte Panter gallery in Antwerp for just under fifty years. His high-octane career has been marked by several periods of great intensity and various series of superb quality. His works are exhibited both in Belgium and abroad and their relevance is widely acknowledged. The very thorough essay in this book by Dr Paul Huvenne, Honorary Administrator-General of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, about Bervoets’ work from 2016 to 2019, and the inspiring article

by Bart De Baere, Director of Antwerp’s M HKA, Museum of Contemporary Art, in the previous publication about Bervoets’ work between 2013 and 2015, not only outline the artist’s unique position within the contemporary arts scene but also place him in context historically, with particular reference to Pieter Bruegel.

In de expositie Sanguine. Luc Tuymans on Baroque in het M HKA en in de Fondazione Prada in Milaan in 2018–2019 komt een gelijkaardige stellingname naar voren van actuele betekenis en historische referenties, meer bepaald aan de barok. Ook daar wordt Bervoets betrokken. Van hem was daar een vroeg werk geselecteerd, De Gezegende Nederlaag uit 1971. Ik citeer uit een bijbehorende publicatie van de Fondazione Prada deze diepgaande Engelse tekst: “De Gezegende Nederlaag is part of the series that Fred Bervoets created in the 1970s and defines as ‘spaghetti paintings’, ideally linked to the theme of the Baroque for the chaotic abundance of elements displayed for the viewer to observe. In a style that is heir to Cobra and has Fauve sensibilities the artist composes universes where the two-dimensional play of depth and perspective takes on shapes that could be those of a visual psychotic delirium.

His practice moves along the double lines of an immediate and spontaneous conception of painting and the need to maintain a narrative dimension. Here too Bervoets’ work was featured, specifically one of his earlier pieces entitled De Gezegende Nederlaag (The Blessed Defeat) from 1971.

I quote the following penetrating analysis from the catalogue that the Fondazione Prada published for the occasion: “De Gezegende Nederlaag is part of the series that Fred Bervoets created in the 1970s and defines as ‘spaghetti paintings’, ideally linked to the theme of the Baroque for the chaotic abundance of elements displayed for the viewer to observe.
