Rüschegg als Lebensraum «Heute vor 40 Jahren am späten Nachmittag des 1. August sind wir mit Kind und Kegel und dem ganzen Hausrat in Rüschegg eingezogen. Es war ein kleines Bauernhaus, das nun zu einem Malerhaus umgebaut worden war. Der Umschwung war halb landwirtschaftlich, halb verwildert (Abb. 1). Ein Wäldchen gehörte dazu»,1 erinnert sich Franz Gertsch und fügt augenzwinkernd an: «Beim Ausladen des Zügelwagens ist eine Kiste mit einem Teil unseres Geschirrs runtergefallen.

Scherben sollen bekanntlich Glück bringen.»2 Es war eine wichtige Entscheidung und ein grosser Schritt, als Maria und Franz Gertsch mit ihren vier Kindern Silvia, Hanne-Lore, Brecht und Benz nach Rüschegg, ein kleines Dorf im Schwarzenburgerland, zogen. Hier, in dieser hügeligen, voralpinen, noch vorwiegend agrarischen Landschaft sollten sie ihr neues Zuhause finden, weitab von der städtischen Betriebsamkeit, eingebettet in den Rhythmus der Natur. Praktische Gründe spielten bei der Wahl des neuen Wohnorts eine wichtige Rolle: Wo sonst hätte sich die grosse Familie ein so geräumiges Haus erwerben können, in dem Wohn- und Atelierbereich vorzüglich nebeneinander bestehen?

“In the late afternoon of the first of August, forty years ago today, we moved to Rüschegg with our kids and all of our things. It was a small farmhouse that had been converted into a painter’s house. The property was a mixture of farmland and overgrown countryside (fig. 1), and there was a small forest as well,”1 Franz Gertsch recalls, adding with a wink that “as we unloaded the moving truck, a crate of our dishes fell onto the ground and shattered. As the German saying goes: shards bring good luck.”2 Moving to Rüschegg, a small village in the Schwarzenburg region near Bern, was an important decision and a big change for Franz and Maria Gertsch and their four children Silvia, Hanne-Lore, Brecht, and Benz. Here, in this hilly and primarily agricultural region at the foot of the Alps, they would build their new home, far removed from the bustle of city life, embedded in the rhythms of nature. Practicality played a large part in the decision to relocate: Where else could this large family have purchased such a spacious house that allowed for both living and studio space under one roof?

Initially, Gertsch maintained close contact with the vibrant cultural scene in Bern and continued to work on his “Zeitgeist pictures,” centered around the young and extravagant Lucerne hippie artist Luciano Castelli and his roommates (fig. 2). These were followed a time later by the reserved yet touching portraits of the equally colorful Zurich personality Irene Staub, also known as Lady Shiva (fig. 3). Gertsch today remarks that “despite our proximity to nature up here, at the foot of the Alps, our life remained urban.”3 Gertsch and his wife maintained their interest in world events, particularly in the international art scene, while Gertsch’s work continued to be followed closely both in Switzerland and internationally. Gertsch left Bern at the age of forty-six. Thanks to his participation in documenta V (1972) and the support of leading exhibition makers such as Jean-Christophe Ammann and Harald Szeemann, as well as gallerists such as Veith Turske and the collector Donald Hess, Gertsch had an international profile and was a highly sought-after artist. So the brave decision to relocate to the countryside was largely beneficial. The shattered plates had brought the artist luck – it must be noted, though, that that fortune which favors the bold has been a constant and faithful companion for Gertsch throughout his career.

Anyone who has made a “pilgrimage” to Gertsch’s studio in Rüschegg will have certainly come away with a number of unforgettable impressions.

First of all, there are the surroundings, with the varied terrain providing vast views of the Alps, and then there is the winding path that leads to the village church perched on a knoll (fig. 4), which contains Gertsch’s triptych Schwarzwasser II – a one-of-a-kind altar decoration. The house, with its overhanging roof, leans on the hillside nearby, surrounded by gardens full of flowers and shrubs, a small pond, and a little grove. Later, Gertsch conceded that the nature in Rüschegg eventually became impossible for him to escape from and that he felt somewhat “encircled”4 by it.

It wasn’t just the house’s interior that was altered and fitted out to suit their needs; the garden was also gradually reshaped to make it more “in harmony with nature.” Gertsch lovingly calls his property in Rüschegg “my Giverny.”5 Entering the house, one’s gaze falls immediately on Huaa…! (1969), Gertsch’s first piece to make use of photographic media as a basis for his work (fig. 5). Although the image of the rider astride a galloping horse appears in a completely singular way here, in terms of its formal and technical expression it also marks a crucial step in his journey toward self-realization. In the late 1960s, Gertsch developed the approach that remains central to his process to this day, when he began to use photographs as the basis for his images. While Huaa…! was

Vorerst blieb Gertsch der aktiven Kulturszene in Bern eng verbunden und arbeitete weiter an seinen «Zeitgeistbildern», in deren Zentrum der junge, extravagante Luzerner Hippiekünstler Luciano Castelli und seine Wohngemeinschaft standen (Abb. 2). Etwas später folgten die distanzierten und doch berührenden Porträts der nicht weniger schillernden Zürcherin Irene Staub alias Lady Shiva (Abb. 3). Und noch heute bemerkt Franz Gertsch: «Trotz aller Nähe zur Natur hier oben am Fusse der Voralpen ist unser Leben ein urbanes geblieben.»3 Das stimmt insofern, als er und seine Frau ihr Interesse an den Ereignissen in der Welt und dabei vor allem am internationalen Kunstgeschehen aufrechterhielten und umgekehrt Franz Gertschs Arbeit im In- und Ausland immer die gebührende Beachtung fand. Als der Künstler die Stadt Bern verliess, zählte er 46 Jahre. Dank der Beteiligung an der documenta V (1972) und dank der Förderung führender Ausstellungsmacher wie Jean-Christophe Ammann oder Harald Szeemann sowie Galeristen wie Veith Turske und durch den Sammler Donald Hess war Gertsch international positioniert und gefragt. So bot denn der mutige Entscheid für den ländlichen Wohnort vor allem Vorteile. Das zerschlagene Geschirr brachte dem Künstler Glück – das Glück des Tüchtigen, gilt es allerdings zu bemerken, verfolgte er seine Laufbahn doch so konsequent und unentwegt wie kaum ein zweiter.

Jeder Besucher, der bereits einmal nach Rüschegg ins Künstleratelier «gepilgert» ist, hat unvergessliche Eindrücke mitgenommen. Da ist zunächst die

based on a black-and-white photograph of a still from the film The Charge of the Light Brigade found in the magazine Salut les copains, Gertsch was soon taking his own pictures. Ever since then, they have served him as a kind of reliable preparatory sketch for making his paintings and woodcuts.

Formerly a barn, the house’s spacious studio is located just beyond the kitchen (fig. 6). The room’s ceiling is high enough to accommodate the giant formats that Gertsch works with, and always contains a painting in progress or a printing block perched on the front wall awaiting critical examination and a continuation of the creation process. There are invariably also a number of completed works arranged together on racks. The artist spends much of his day in this calm and quiet place, free of distractions, and works on his large-format canvases and woodblocks, sitting in front of them for hours contemplating his next move. Standing in this tidy studio, it becomes clear how Gertsch is not just a productive artist, but also a reflexive one; a painter and woodcutter and a conceptual artist. The artist himself sums up this polarity with the coupling “métier et esprit” (craft and spirit).6

starke Natur mit dem reich durchschnittenen Gelände, das immer wieder schönste Weitblicke in die Alpen gewährt, da ist der geschwungene Weg mit der Dorfkirche auf der Anhöhe (Abb. 4). Diese birgt mit Franz Gertschs Triptychon Schwarzwasser II einen einmaligen Altarschmuck. Nicht weit entfernt befindet sich das an den Hang gelehnte Haus mit seinem ausladenden Dach, umgeben vom riesigen Garten mit Blumen, Stauden, dem kleinen Teich und einem Wäldchen.

Gertsch gibt später zu, dass die Natur in Rüschegg nach und nach doch unausweichlich geworden sei, dass er sich von ihr gleichsam «umzingelt»4 gefühlt habe.

Nicht nur das Innere des Hauses wurde den Bedürfnissen entsprechend verändert und eingerichtet, auch der Garten wurde nach und nach sanft und «naturgerecht» umgestaltet. «Mein Giverny»5 nennt Gertsch sein Anwesen in Rüschegg liebevoll.

Betritt man das Haus, fällt der Blick auf das Bild Huaa...! (1969), mit dem Gertsch sich zum ersten Mal auf eine medial vermittelte Vorlage berufen hat (Abb. 5). Obschon das Motiv mit dem Reiter auf dem wild galoppierenden Pferd in seinem Werk völlig singulär auftritt, markiert es im formal-technischen Ausdruck einen wesentlichen Schritt zur Selbstwerdung. Ende der 1960er-Jahre entwickelte Gertsch das für seinen Arbeitsprozess nach wie vor bestimmende Vorgehen und entdeckte die Fotografie als Vorlage für seine Bilder. Während es bei der Arbeit Huaa...! eine aus dem Magazin Salut les copains in Schwarz-Weiss abfotografierte Illustration eines Stills aus dem Film The Charge of the Light Brigade war, machte Gertsch schon bald darauf seine Aufnahmen selbst. Sie dienen ihm seither als eine Art verlässliche Skizzen für seine Gemälde und Holzschnitte.

An der Wohnküche vorbei führt der Weg ins geräumige, aus einer Scheune umgebaute Atelier (Abb. 6). Der Raum ist hoch genug, um den riesigen Formaten Platz zu bieten. Immer steht ein angefangenes Gemälde oder ein Druckstock vorne an der Stirnwand zur genauen kritischen Überprüfung und weiteren Bearbeitung. Stets sind andere abgeschlossene Werke in Gestellen aufgereiht. An diesem ruhigen Ort, an dem es keine Ablenkung gibt, hält sich der Künstler viele Stunden am Tag auf. Hier arbeitet er an seinen überlebensgrossen Leinwänden und Holzstöcken, hier sitzt er lange vor ihnen und überdenkt die nächsten Schritte. Gerade in diesem aufgeräumten Atelier wird einem bewusst, wie sehr Gertsch ausführender und reflektierender Künstler ist, Maler, Holzschneider und gleichzeitig ein konzeptuell ausgerichteter Künstler.

Als «Métier et esprit»6 bringt der Künstler selbst diese Polarität auf den Punkt.

The move to Rüschegg did not have an immediate effect on Gertsch’s working process and choice of subject matter; initially the artist remained focused on his preexisting themes. Following a number of further paintings featuring Luciano Castelli and his circle of friends, Gertsch then created five large-format paintings dedicated to rock poet Patti Smith. Gertsch had been one of a select few invited to one of her concerts via his gallerist, Veith Turske, and, as ever, he had his camera with him. He photographed Smith on stage incessantly, not noticing the fact that his camera’s flash annoyed her. When Smith scrunched a piece of paper with one of her texts on it into a ball and threw it at his head, this unshakeable “fan” simply documented the act. At the end of the concert, Gertsch had a film-like series of photos of Smith’s performance, and he drew on them to create his five-part Patti Smith series (figs. 7 and 8). In this series, Gertsch shows the artist in motion and in poses that are unusual for a portrait: one from behind as she tunes her guitar, one where she is right on the edge of the image, one of her calmly reciting Rimbaud, and one where she is tense and irritated by

Am Ende hatte er eine filmähnliche Fotoserie von Smiths Performance verfügbar und traf daraus eine Auswahl als Fotovorlagen für seinen fünfteiligen Patti Smith-Zyklus (Abb. 7 und 8). Dabei zeigt er die Rockpoetin in Bewegung und in für ein Porträt ungewöhnlichen Posen: einmal von hinten die Gitarre stimmend, einmal an den Rand des Bildes

based on a black-and-white photograph of a still from the film The Charge of the Light Brigade found in the magazine Salut les copains, Gertsch was soon taking his own pictures. Ever since then, they have served him as a kind of reliable preparatory sketch for making his paintings and woodcuts.

Formerly a barn, the house’s spacious studio is located just beyond the kitchen (fig. 6). The room’s ceiling is high enough to accommodate the giant formats that Gertsch works with, and always contains a painting in progress or a printing block perched on the front wall awaiting critical examination and a continuation of the creation process. There are invariably also a number of completed works arranged together on racks. The artist spends much of his day in this calm and quiet place, free of distractions, and works on his large-format canvases and woodblocks, sitting in front of them for hours contemplating his next move. Standing in this tidy studio, it becomes clear how Gertsch is not just a productive artist, but also a reflexive one; a painter and woodcutter and a conceptual artist. The artist himself sums up this polarity with the coupling “métier et esprit” (craft and spirit).6

starke Natur mit dem reich durchschnittenen Gelände, das immer wieder schönste Weitblicke in die Alpen gewährt, da ist der geschwungene Weg mit der Dorfkirche auf der Anhöhe (Abb. 4). Diese birgt mit Franz Gertschs Triptychon Schwarzwasser II einen einmaligen Altarschmuck. Nicht weit entfernt befindet sich das an den Hang gelehnte Haus mit seinem ausladenden Dach, umgeben vom riesigen Garten mit Blumen, Stauden, dem kleinen Teich und einem Wäldchen.

Gertsch gibt später zu, dass die Natur in Rüschegg nach und nach doch unausweichlich geworden sei, dass er sich von ihr gleichsam «umzingelt»4 gefühlt habe.

Nicht nur das Innere des Hauses wurde den Bedürfnissen entsprechend verändert und eingerichtet, auch der Garten wurde nach und nach sanft und «naturgerecht» umgestaltet. «Mein Giverny»5 nennt Gertsch sein Anwesen in Rüschegg liebevoll.

Betritt man das Haus, fällt der Blick auf das Bild Huaa...! (1969), mit dem Gertsch sich zum ersten Mal auf eine medial vermittelte Vorlage berufen hat (Abb. 5). Obschon das Motiv mit dem Reiter auf dem wild galoppierenden Pferd in seinem Werk völlig singulär auftritt, markiert es im formal-technischen Ausdruck einen wesentlichen Schritt zur Selbstwerdung. Ende der 1960er-Jahre entwickelte Gertsch das für seinen Arbeitsprozess nach wie vor bestimmende Vorgehen und entdeckte die Fotografie als Vorlage für seine Bilder. Während es bei der Arbeit Huaa...! eine aus dem Magazin Salut les copains in Schwarz-Weiss abfotografierte Illustration eines Stills aus dem Film The Charge of the Light Brigade war, machte Gertsch schon bald darauf seine Aufnahmen selbst. Sie dienen ihm seither als eine Art verlässliche Skizzen für seine Gemälde und Holzschnitte.

An der Wohnküche vorbei führt der Weg ins geräumige, aus einer Scheune umgebaute Atelier (Abb. 6). Der Raum ist hoch genug, um den riesigen Formaten Platz zu bieten. Immer steht ein angefangenes Gemälde oder ein Druckstock vorne an der Stirnwand zur genauen kritischen Überprüfung und weiteren Bearbeitung. Stets sind andere abgeschlossene Werke in Gestellen aufgereiht. An diesem ruhigen Ort, an dem es keine Ablenkung gibt, hält sich der Künstler viele Stunden am Tag auf. Hier arbeitet er an seinen überlebensgrossen Leinwänden und Holzstöcken, hier sitzt er lange vor ihnen und überdenkt die nächsten Schritte. Gerade in diesem aufgeräumten Atelier wird einem bewusst, wie sehr Gertsch ausführender und reflektierender Künstler ist, Maler, Holzschneider und gleichzeitig ein konzeptuell ausgerichteter Künstler.

Als «Métier et esprit»6 bringt der Künstler selbst diese Polarität auf den Punkt.

Seeing the works together, one gets the impression of being in a film made up of different sequences with its own specific dramaturgy. Patti Smith V was created some time later than the paintings in the initial series and is based on a later encounter (fig. 9), after Gertsch invited the musician to his atelier in Rüschegg in order to show her the portraits he had created. She was astounded. Touched by this act of homage, the artistic value of which was immediately apparent to her, she sat down and spoke a few words of thanks. She said that it had always been a wish of hers to have the experience of being an artist’s model and muse. She also thanked Maria Gertsch for supporting her husband in the creation of his work.7 Gertsch captured this moment with his camera, which he then later used as the basis for Patti Smith V. In this painting, the movement present in the other four paintings in the series comes to a standstill, as it were.

With no musical equipment present, she is no longer seen in her role as a rock poet, instead captured simply as herself. Portrayed in this large format, she becomes a kind of existential figure. The restricted color palette, which here tends toward nuanced gradations of black and white, emphasizes the artist’s efforts to concentrate on what is essential, as well as the attempt to capture this electrifying artist, brimming with music and poetry, not only in her external appearance and demeanor, but also in her uniquely human way of being.

The Self-Portrait of 1980 Gertsch only portrayed himself twice in his art: first at the age of twenty-five in a frontal portrait, which stylistically owes as much to Old Masters such as Albrecht Dürer as to the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movement, and secondly at the age of fifty (fig. 10). As with Patti Smith V, the focus is on the model, rendered as a bust portrait. There is nothing extraneous in the picture to distract from the face thrust into the light and depicted in three-quarter view, almost emerging outward from the wallpapered studio wall that forms the tranquil background. The move to Rüschegg did not have an immediate effect on Gertsch’s working process and choice of subject matter; initially the artist remained focused on his preexisting themes. Following a number of further paintings featuring Luciano Castelli and his circle of friends, Gertsch then created five large-format paintings dedicated to rock poet Patti Smith. Gertsch had been one of a select few invited to one of her concerts via his gallerist, Veith Turske, and, as ever, he had his camera with him. He photographed Smith on stage incessantly, not noticing the fact that his camera’s flash annoyed her. When Smith scrunched a piece of paper with one of her texts on it into a ball and threw it at his head, this unshakeable “fan” simply documented the act. At the end of the concert, Gertsch had a film-like series of photos of Smith’s performance, and he drew on them to create his five-part Patti Smith series (figs. 7 and 8). In this series, Gertsch shows the artist in motion and in poses that are unusual for a portrait: one from behind as she tunes her guitar, one where she is right on the edge of the image, one of her calmly reciting Rimbaud, and one where she is tense and irritated by

A viewer who does not know Gertsch would have the impression of being confronted by some anonymous older man.

Any form of bohemian self-presentation appears to be foreign to him. He is inconspicuously dressed in a gray sports jacket and a plain fustian shirt. Despite an absence of remarkable features, the face has something captivating to it when transposed to a painting. What is compelling about this work comes not from the external surroundings but is derived purely from the inner essence of the subject, whose slightly raised head gives the impression of a figure gazing into the distance. The expression appears determined and confident yet simultaneously inquisitively expectant, conveying both a rootedness in the present and an interest in what the future may hold, a sense of both extroversion and introversion.

The self-portrait of the artist at fifty provided a basis for the paintings that immediately followed, which return to young women for their subject matter. “After working on Self-Portrait, which entailed a strong interrogation of my own face, I seem to have had enough of masculine character sketches, and turned to the calmer facial landscapes of young women,”8 Gertsch later reflects.

Johanna I and Johanna II These works came about not as the result of an encounter with a model from his circle of friends and acquaintances but rather through a commission. Austrian collector Hans Dichand had asked Gertsch to produce a portrait of his daughter Johanna, who had previously modeled for no less than Andy Warhol. Despite initial reservations, after several meetings with the young woman, Gertsch eventually agreed to the commission. The paintings were based on two photographs that he had selected from the many he had taken with the Hasselblad camera that Dichand had lent him: one depicting the model in an ecru blouse, and one a black shirt, both again in three-quarter view. Working on these large-scale pieces from 1983 to 1986, he produced two peerless works in terms of both their artistic execution and the flawlessness of their depiction of young female beauty, which Gertsch views as an expression of “vital presence” (fig. 11).

durch das Wissen über die abstrakte Malerei eines Mark Rothko oder Barnett Newman und gleichzeitig ein genuines Werk von Franz Gertsch. Mit diesem schlichtesten aller Motive, einem gefrorenen Wassertropfen, der in den Fluss fällt, schafft Gertsch eines seiner grössten Werke – sowohl in Format wie in Aussage und Ausstrahlung. Das 1991 /92 in verschiedenen Exemplaren ausgeführte Triptychon umfasst drei Platten von je 237 × 185 cm, die sich zum monumentalen Werk ergänzen (Abb. 22). Zu sehen ist gleichsam die Auswirkung der kleinen Ursache: Ein Eisstückchen fällt ins Wasser und zieht darin Kreise, feine Linienbahnen und Spiralen. Sie sind die leisen Protagonisten in Gertschs Bild. Die Dimension des Raums ist nun von der Dimension der Zeit abgelöst. Die Sekunde, in welcher das Eisstück das Wasser berührt, ist in der Fotografie gebannt.

Gertsch verleiht ihr im langsamen Prozess der Ausführung am Holzstock eine andere temporale Qualität. Die ausschwingenden Wasserkreise übertragen den Moment in eine unbestimmte Dauer. Die monumentalen Formate wecken beim Betrachter den Eindruck einer anderen temporalen Erfahrung. Der Augenblick ist in eine Dauer übersetzt, die sich der linearen Zeitmessung zu entziehen scheint. In Ulrich Loocks Worten: «Die Landschaftsbilder, z. B. das Bild einer bewegten Wasserfläche, machen die fotografische Momentaneität, das Gewesen-Sein der Repräsentation prägnanter: So wie es gewiss ist, dass das Wasser im Moment der Aufnahme so gekräuselt gewesen ist, so ist es gleichermassen gewiss, dass es in keinem anderen Moment so gekräuselt war oder sein wird. Mit den Landschaftsbildern erhält die Momentaneität aber auch eine andere Qualität: Alle anderen Momente ergeben ein jeweils ganz anderes Bild, doch fehlt einer solchen Sequenz von Momenten die Finalität, welche der Folge von Momenten im Leben eines Menschen eingeschrieben ist. So lässt sich sagen, im Fall der Landschaft beinhalte die vollendete Gegenwart der Repräsentation bereits die Verzögerung. Nach alledem scheint es bei der Malerei von Franz Gertsch darum zu gehen, das Gedächtnis ins Werk zu setzen, welches jener Gewissheit bedarf, deren Garant allein das Fotografische der Repräsentation ist. Im Widerspruch zur Zeitlichkeit der Repräsentation aber gilt die Gedächtnisarbeit des Malers dem Aufschub der Vollendung ihrer Gegenwart.»25 Die Form des Triptychons spielt unweigerlich auf den sakralen Sinnzusammenhang an, bei Gertsch aber ohne spezielle religiöse Konnotation. Und doch gelangte nicht zufällig das Triptychon Schwarzwasser II in die kleine Kirche
