Better known are the great players from the 1930s whose names today form the bedrock of Hollywood history. All-American men such as Gary Cooper and Clark Gable shared the screen with sirens such as Marlene Dietrich and Hedy Lamarr, two among many who began acting in Europe and found lasting fame in southern California. They were soon joined by Vivien Leigh and Charles Boyer. Legends such as Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall ware prominent among the stars, along with Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. The World Book of Hope The Source of Happiness, Success & Strength Leo Bormans After the worldwide success of The World Book of Happiness and The World Book of Love, author Leo Bormans has spent two years studying the scientific research on hope and meeting the most prominent experts in the field. Hope is not a luxury of the privileged few. It represents a universal psychological resource that can be found in all corners of the world. Hope is all of this: a tool for envisioning definable goals, a coping resource, an expression of trust and openness as well as a spiritual gift earned by faith or ritual. In the course of a lifetime every individual is apt to experience these different shades of hope. The World Book of Hope is an inspiring quest to the breadth and depth of hope. It offers a universal framework for understanding and using the most powerful tool of mankind: hope. Without hope there is no life. In this book, 100 professional researchers from all over the world share what we know about hope. Not spiritual philosophy but evidence based knowledge of recent experiments and life-long research, set in a language everybody understands. This book unveils the secret power of hope in love and relationships, study and work, health and illness, education and care, freedom and prison, management and leadership, therapy and economy, youth and old age. It even shows how we can make pessimism work and how we can benefit from post-traumatic growth: one door closes, another one opens.

Jazz The Iconic Images of Ted Williams Ted Williams From the smoky backstage dressing rooms of New York and Chicago’s pioneering jazz clubs to the acclaimed Jazz festivals that flourished to enthral legions of fans, Ted Williams’ camera captured the intimacy and the wizardry of Jazz’s greats as they perfected their art over more than three decades from the 1940s-1970s. From his unique access and perspective, Williams diligently accumulated a unique and largely unseen archive that documented some of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, the jazz and blues musicians who themselves not only inspired the greats such as Frank Sinatra but fired the aspirations and tastes of a new generation; The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton among them. Williams caught them in the act of exploring and defining their careers and music - while ensuring impassioned audiences and atmospheric venues remained inseparable from the iconic history he was chronicling. From Miles Davis to Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie to Stan Getz and Sarah Vaughan, Williams’ camera witnessed genius at work, rest and play, with an honesty and clarity that few photographers could replicate. ISBN: 9781851498277 ACC Editions 9.25 x 11.75in., 352pp. September 2016, $75.00 Hardcover
Artists include: Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ray Charles, Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughan, Thelonious Monk, Dinah Washington, Duke Ellington, Count Bassie, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Tony Bennett, Mahalia Jackson, Buddy Rich, Julian “Cannonball” Adderly, Art Blakey, Benny Goodman, Charles Mingus, Quincy Jones, Sonny Rollin, Muddy Waters, Max Roach, Woody Herman and Wynton Marsalis
When Williams died in 2009 at the age of 84, he left nearly 100,000 prints and negatives behind - many of which have never been seen before. Jazz, the first book dedicated to the jazz photography of Ted Williams, will highlight hundreds of these unseen jazz images and will be captioned throughout by his own memories along with commentary from some of the leading jazz historians and journalists working today.

Terry O’Neill Every Picture Tells a Story Terry O'Neill From The Beatles to the Rolling Stones, Terry O'Neill fast became the photographer of the 1960s. Having an eye and ear - for music and musicians, he instinctively knew which bands to focus on. And they in turn trusted him. “I remember sitting in a pub with the Beatles and the Stones. We were just hanging-out and talking about what we'd do next, after all of this was over. By this, we meant the fame, being the ‘new kids of the moment’. Usually, this sort of celebrity doesn’t last. Little did we know that 60 years later, we’d still be at it.” Music lead O’Neill to Hollywood and working with stars resulted not only in to memorable moments but long-lasting friendships. He traveled with Frank Sinatra. Took Raquel Welch to the beach. Went in the ring with Ali. Put The Who in a cage. O’Neill captured many of the most unforgettable faces from the frontline of fame, and his photographs exude his own brand of serene simplicity, intimate behind-the-scene moments and the rare quality of trust between photographer and subject. Punk Play Book Starring Vivienne Westwood Matteo Guarnaccia
ISBN: 9788866483243 24 ORE Cultura 13.75 x 10.75in., 96pp. 5 col., 50 b.&w. July 2016, $29.95 Paperback
This play book is being published four decades after the birth of punk, and it is devoted to one of the most spectacular youth revolutions in the whole of history: a provocation held together by safety pins, one that was rather short lived (1976-1980) but definitely made its point... and left a deep mark on our imagination. Thanks to torn clothing, spiky hair, chains, razor blades, studs, leather, sullen facial expressions, and a fast pace, the movement elbowed its way to the frontline of style. Punk was the product of an economic crisis, of the failure of ideologies, of the wake-up call of the dream of love and peace in the sixties, but it was also a healthy reaction to the tediousness and pomposity of the cultural pundits. It appeared with a rebellious and rude attitude, together with vibrant music performed by a motley crew of performers wearing garish stage outfits: from the Sex Pistols to The Clash, from Iggy pop to The Ramones. In spite of nihilist radicalness and its prophetic promise of “No Future”, punk did guarantee a future to the fashion system by putting forward myriad new ideas. It ritualised violence, its visual terrorism was transformed into a successful sartorial stereotype. The Punk Playbook invites you to play punk by coloring in, cutting, pasting, and putting together figures that recall the places, the idiosyncrasies, and the cult heroes of the punk scene - and to enjoy the educational supplement dedicated to the movement’s fairy godmother, the great name in fashion, Vivienne Westwood, and her outrageous creations. David Bowie Play Book Matteo Guarnaccia, text by Giulia Pivetta For the duration of his career, David Bowie kept away from scripts imposed by others, choosing, for better or for worse, to write his own story of his life. From the Sixties until his death in 2016, he created a series of fictional figures, imagining them in full, designing, and translating them on stage, giving each its unique identity. The clothes, faces, and music of those years become subjects to color in, paperdolls to dress, and board games to assemble in this, the ultimate collector’s activity-book: to be approached with glue, scissors and coloring pencils, dedicated to all the fans of the legendary superstar.

Matisse In His Time Edited by Cécile Debray The exhibition Matisse in his Time, and this accompanying catalogue, present a selection of works belonging to the Musée national d'art moderne at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The masterpieces gathered here are presented in the artistic context of their time, and compared with other masterpieces from the same collection - Picasso to Viallat passing by Braque, Léger, Dufy, Renoir and Bonnard. What is being proposed here is not, therefore, the master of Dance isolated in his ivory tower, but a Matisse in connection with his time, through his friendships, the abundant and fruitful exchanges with his contemporaries.

Groupies and Other Electric Ladies The original 1969 Rolling Stone photographs by Baron Wolman Baron Wolman, with a foreword by Holly George-Warren The 1960s witnessed a huge cultural revolution. Music was at the heart of a new generation's rallying cry for love, peace and harmony - from small clubs to giant festivals like Woodstock. With men predictably dominating as musicians and performers, the women and girls backstage started to explore their own forms of liberation and self-expression. They became better known as the Groupies - offering their allegiance to the music, and the artists who made it.

On February 15, 1969 Rolling Stone magazine released a ‘Special SuperDuper Neat Issue’ called 'THE GROUPIES and Other Girls’ featuring the work of their chief photographer, Baron Wolman. It would turn out to be a sensational milestone, making instant celebrities of the women featured. With this single issue, the Groupies had arrived. They emerged as extraordinary women, whose lifestyles divided opinion and remain controversial. Some became models, actresses, writers, artists and musicians - the GTOs, the original “Groupie band” admired and encouraged by Frank Zappa, is featured here. Others fell into obscurity. Now, over 45 years later, ACC and Iconic Images are proud to publish the photographs of Baron Wolman in a single volume. Groupies and Other Electric Ladies features more than 150 images, including previously unseen out-takes and contact sheets, and comes complete with the original Rolling Stone text, as well as interviews with several of the women today.
“ Voted one of the Best photo books of the year
by the New York Post, Groupies is now available in paperback

Dirk Leyman became interested at a very young age in these peculiar accordion postcard albums, which every self-respecting tourist and souvenir hunter used to take home from their holiday. The snapshots, which are folded in zig-zag fashion, are like relics of a long-gone era. Some are veritable typographical and photographic gems. Others are borderline kitsch, with their heavy-handed use of color. Europe Express spans the decades between the two World Wars to the early Eighties, with photos of San Marco in Venice and the elegant Grand Hotels and the utopian, upstanding world of the former Soviet Union.
“Cologne is a feeling", say the locals, and it is also a magnet for tourists. Some five million people visit this cathedral city every year. Cologne is not a polished and shiny place, but has its rough edges. It is scarcely possible to explain the city in abstract terms. You have to see and feel it, and this is exactly the starting point for this new guide to Cologne.
In The Amsterdam City Guide Anne de Buck shares her favorite addresses from her blog ‘Your Little Black Book’, which receives 170,000 unique visitors per month. The book includes hotspots tourists will not find without the help of this guide. The Amsterdam City Guide shortlists the best coffee bars across the city, superb concept stores, and the best six walks to help you discover Amsterdam’s best neighborhoods. With this contemporary city guide you will experience Amsterdam in a whole new way.
True locals Saskia Naafs & Guido van Eijck selected 500 addresses and facts about Rotterdam that few people know and presents them in lists of 5, alongside beautiful photographs. Guido and Saskia’s favorite addresses include a former harbor warehouse turned daily fresh market where you can sample a perfect locally roasted coffee or a homemade cider, a bright red light vessel ship where you can attend an intimate concert, or a former subtropical swimming paradise where your can grow your own oyster mushrooms.

Christopher Many embarked on an overland trip in 1997, believing he’d spend no more than a year or two on the road. Now, 19 years have passed, and he is still somewhere out there, circumnavigating the globe with vehicles of questionable reliability in a quest to understand what makes humanity “tick”. Right Beyond the Horizon tells the tale of Christopher’s latest voyage between 2012 and 2016: a motorcycle adventure from Germany to Australia, together with his partner Laura Pattara. Their modern-day odyssey follows the ancient Silk Road from Europe to Central Asia, then across the Pamir Mountains into China. Four years later they reach the harbor of Denpasar on the Indonesian island of Bali the gateway to Australia and terminus of the classic transAsia overland route.
Magnificent pictures tell the story of an unusual passion: storm chasing. Impressive close-up pictures show the enormous force and beauty of extraordinary weather phenomenon. Subjects of the illustrated chapters range from the splendour of cloud shapes and sky colors to the fascination of lightning. An extra chapter deals with deadly tornados. The next part of the book offers ample background information on storm chasing. Moreover, a severe weather expert describes how to prepare for a storm chase, and a severe weather photographer gives tips for perfect pictures. In addition, readers find extensive information on the formation of thunderclouds, large hailstones and tornados in the USA. The book is rounded off by tips for books, films and websites about the international storm chaser scene.

Venice is for gondolas, New York for taxis, Oxford for bicycles - and pedestrians. Oxford is a place to be taken slowly. This is a city which has survived untouched for the best part of a thousand years. And yet it never grows old: it renews itself each autumn with a fresh infusion of youth. Douglas Vernimmen’s magnificent portfolio of photographs is his unique, early twenty-first century, pictorial interpretation of an extraordinary city.
Instagram is the #1 source for photography talent and breath-taking locations to spend the night and enjoy the sunrise. Curated by The Sizoo Brothers, Depart unveils the whereabouts of some of the best locations, making this an inspirational photography book and a practical guide for travel enthusiasts. The book contains over 40 stunning destinations from around the world, including practical traveling information, captured by up-and-coming as well as established photographers.
Amsterdam has always been a free-spirited, creative and bustling city - but never more than it was from 1960 to 1980. Amsterdam photo press agency Sabel & Daniëls was on site and captured the Amsterdam scene, consisting of personalities like Ray Charles, John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Martin Luther King, Johan Cruijff, The Beatles and many others. Those who felt connected and attracted to this roaring metropolis are brought together in this book.
Michel Paoli’s eye records each and every manifestation of beauty it stumbles upon: from the visages of kids immersed in reading to the supine bodies of bathers, from the bales of hay on Tuscan hills to the fleeting legs of Parisian passersby. This collection of 120 images focuses mainly on Paris and Montmartre, Les Petites-Dalles and France, and - to a lesser degree - on Italy and other countries such as Brazil.

Mascara, Mirth and Mayhem: Independence Day on Fire Island is a rollicking photographic document that celebrates four decades of an event known as “the Invasion of the Pines” by members of the neighboring LGBT community of Cherry Grove. Initially planned to shock their staid neighbours and protest their snobbery, this queenly invasion on every July 4th, is a moment on Fire Island equal to Stonewall in Greenwich Village. The history of the original protest invasion, along with selected interviews of participants, then and now, augment Susan Kravitz's photographs of this flamboyant event taken over a period of 30 years.

Melrose Mayhem is a stunning collection of photography documenting L. A. street art in the alleys and back ways of the once famous shopping Mecca - Melrose Avenue. Appearing in the last decade, these epic murals, self-proclaiming tags and artful collages have transformed the back alleys into an urban fantasy known by the few who have ventured behind the shiny facades of the trendy avenue. Highly respected photographer Markus Cuff has been documenting this “outdoor art gallery” for over five years.
In 1999, photographers Robert Huber and Stephan Vanfleteren traveled through the US in the wake of their hero, Elvis Presley. Elvis (Huber) and Presley (Vanfleteren) invite you to share their journey across the American landscape, from Times Square to Death Valley. Decked out in glittering jumpsuits and big hair, this is the story of two European photojournalists who traveled across eleven states taking pictures of each other, Stephan Vanfleteren using black and white film, Robert Huber, color.

Photographer, stylist and fashion editor Ferry van der Nat has worked for numerous fashion magazine and brands. Under the name Mr Polaroid, Van der Nat began taking strong sculptural polaroids of male models. What started as a personal project evolved into a great collection of images and a celebration of male beauty. Mr Polaroid’s first ever monograph contains over 200 of his best photographs. With contributions by Gert Jonkers (Fantastic Man) and Alan Prada (l’Uomo Vogue).
Torso is an amazing collection of work spanning 16 years, that documents the burgeoning tattoo phenomenon across the United States and Pacific Islands; these photographs are slick and darkly addictive… reflecting artistic expression that links to both personal and social identity, the telling of stories on the skin, of being and belonging.
Dutch photographer Carli Hermès has been working all over the world as a groundbreaking photographer for over 25 years now. This book features Carli’s classics including his work for brands like Martini, Swatch, Levi’s, Mexx, G-Star, Nike, WE, Philips, Sony, BMW, Suitsupply and Mercedes Benz, and it has Carli’s personal favorites and new images - made exclusively for the book. His rich collection is imaginative, both conceptual, honest and with a dash of kinetic moving volatility.
Mexico city is one of the most glamorous and dramatic cities in the world. This book presents the best Mexico has to offer when it comes to contemporary photography, with a focus on the capital Mexico City. Breathtaking panoramic landscapes from Pablo Lopez Luz, humorous images from Alejandro Cartagena, street photography by Mark Alor Powel, portraits of rich people by Yvonne Venegas… The most important artist in the book is Graciele Iturbide, one of the most influential Latin American photographers of the past four decades. The German photographer Boris Becker is one of the most prominent representatives of the Düsseldorf School. In his newest series, Staged Confusion, Becker investigates different forms of chaos in interior and exterior spaces. Composed as single images, these large-format works, which are from different series, are starkly interrelated in terms of form and content in spite of their heterogeneity. The photographs expose the beauty of what appears to be chaotic at first glance. At the same time the ambivalence of ordered and unordered situations brings up questions about the social principles of order.

Frank. Sammie. Twiggy. Sophia. Elizabeth. Elvis. Priscilla. Jim. Marlene. John. Yoko. Ginger. Janis. Mick. Jack. Fred. Salvador. Cher. Audrey. Dolly. Elton. Marlon… Very few celebrities are so iconic that a single name is all that’s needed in order to immediately recognize them. One photographer has captured each and every one of these icons - and more besides - on film. He goes by the name of Oscar Abolafia. You can call him Oscar.
Sanne Sannes was the “agent provocateur” of the Dutch photography scene in the 1960s. His grainy, black and white, intimate and erotic portraits of women, went against all the traditional rules of photography. Sannes was not afraid to experiment with photographic techniques and styles. Sannes was tragically killed just days after he turned 30, but in his short life he created one of the most impressive photographic oeuvres of the 20th century. This monograph is the most complete overview of the work of Sanne Sannes that has been published.
The first publication to bring together three major twentieth-century photographers Wolfgang Suschitzky, Dorothy Bohm and Neil Libbert. Today, London, Paris, and New York are so familiar that it is hard for a modern viewer to imagine them afresh. Yet when each of these photographers arrived at their respective destinations, they found cities that were strange and new to them and responded by photographing them without prejudice or expectation. The photographs reveal that all three cities were not only places of social division and political tension, but also of beauty and magic.
Magnum photographer Carl De Keyzer went to Cuba and came back with surprising, often tragicomical pictures of a split country. Fidel Castro on a wall poster, while a man in the same picture wears a T-shirt emblazoned with ‘FBI’. Four Cubans withdrawing money in a bank, while Che Guevara watches them from a portrait above their heads. In his new photography book, with an introduction by curator and publicist Gabriela Salgado, Carl De Keyzer captures Cuba’s duality in pictures. With a master’s eye, he paints the picture of a country that is still rooted in communism, while reaching for Western capitalism.

Detroit Is offers a very personal depiction of an often misrepresented and maligned place. J. Gordon Rodwan’s photographs show sides of the city that many people often miss rather than reproducing images already widely seen. They don’t ignore the dilapidated parts of the city, but they don’t fetishise those elements either. Instead, Rodwan juxtaposes them with images capturing efforts to cultivate and sustain creativity and vibrancy in place where too many expect to see only relics or despair. Neither ‘ruin porn’ nor an equally distorted boosterish presentation of only the positive, Detroit Is offers a highly individual look at what it’s like to live in Detroit. Nashville as seen through the inimitable lens of master photographer Kristoffersen. A beautiful collection of imagery capturing the essence of this rapidly expanding city Kristoffersen's artistic vision is the only book that you will need on this eclectic place. Kristoffersen, born a Texan, has lived in downtown Nashville - music city USA for over 20 years and seen the hustle and bustle of life there and the remarkable expansion/development of this beloved place. Music in one form or another is represented throughout the book. Music City is a true tribute to every man’s Nashville. With an essay by Mary Unobsky. “Writing rooms” refers to the unique working places of the most famous Dutch and Flemish authors. Their doors are usually closed for the reader but just this once they allow us to enter. Where have the modern masterpieces of modern literature been written? This book gives us the answer both in words and images and also explains their working methods. Surprising, poetical, sometimes demystifying. A beautiful photography book with a literary twist.
In 1947 and 1948, Van Johnson was MGM’s top male box office draw. Along the way, his wife, Evie Wynn Johnson, an amateur shutterbug captured behind-the-scenes images of their friends, some of Hollywood’s most famous stars, such as Gary Cooper, Judy Garland, and Humphrey Bogart on the road, on the set, around the pool, and at their Hollywood home. She put together these casual and candid images in a family album that has never been published before. Their daughter, Schuyler adds her memories to this unique document of Hollywood's Golden Age.

New York/Los Angeles is an exciting collection of new images of America’s two most interesting cities taken over some 40 years, as seen through the eye of photographer, art director and awardwinning designer Lloyd Ziff. “I own at least two of Lloyd’s pictures, and I keep them with me, usually by a window because the photographs themselves are picture windows; they view a life of romance, escape and optimism. They give me a way out. I love Lloyd for most of the same reasons.” Annie Leibovitz “Honestly, it is the best photography I have seen in a long, long time. I am knocked out. Both volumes take my breath away. And, how well they work together: West Coast/East Coast, left and right, red and blue, black and white. This an incredible body of work, perfectly presented.” Gail Buckland, Author, Educator, Curator of Photography “To be frank, who would have known Lloyd would be a master in the light touch. Real open and breezy, lots of room for people to get lost. When I look at them, I feel all warm. They make me want to go home.” Diane Keaton New York - Sights Unscene is a wonderful collection of photography taken throughout the diverse and beautiful landscape of New York State. This book encompasses all the regional areas, major cities, rural towns, villages and scenic views. While his crew is resting at the pool, pilot and photographer Henk Van Rensbergen leaves for an expedition to abandoned hotels, overgrown factories, or desolate, green places. Van Rensbergen always manages to see the beauty in decay, and the (international) press quickly gave him credit for it. “Haunting photographs” was the headline in The Wall Street Journal. The handy, pocket-sized book Abandoned Places shows the best from Abandoned Places 1, 2, 3 and The Photographer's Selection, completed with brand new material.
Haute couture often dazzles us with its precision, craftsmanship and the extravaganza inherent in it. Clothing items are made out of proportion; unique materials are used and everything is hand-finished. But, the Prêt-àporter collections of today comply with the classic principles of Haute Couture. The items shown on the catwalk should theoretically be wearable, but often in reality this is not entirely the case. Haute-à-Porter examines the relationship between Haute Couture and prêt-à-porter collections and shows the evolution in their relationship over the past 25 years.
This catalogue accompanies and illustrates an exhibition to be held in various locations from May 2016 to April 2017, and will include many works of art on loan from public and private collections, along with contemporary works of art created specifically for the occasion. The project uses case histories to analyze the ways in which fashion and art interacted - how they blurred lines, overlapped and cooperated, from the Pre-Raphaelites to Futurism and Surrealism with a focus on a few of the ateliers where artists gathered in the 1950s and ‘60s and on the birth of celebrity culture, to then delve into the experimentation of the 1990s, ultimately arriving at the question of whether these two worlds can still be considered separate and distinct in the contemporary cultural industry, or if they have merged in a fluid exchange of roles.

This book, part of the Design Art of Villa series, collects high quality luxury villas and presents almost forty stunning interiors. All of the projects included are the latest works of the world’s best architects and designers. Using hundreds of sublime photographs, and engaging texts, Villa Design Ideas illustrates how a luxury villa is designed and completed, and will provide inspiration to a great number of design enthusiasts.
Lionel Jadot is the archetype of an eclectic person. Born from a family of furniture makers, the workshop was his playground and at a very young age he became interested in the art of making furniture. He expanded his focus later on and can now call himself an architect, interior designer, designer, artist and movie director. In his view working equals playing, recycling, assembling, always with a nod towards other cultures, the past, and local context.
With personal, concise and informative texts, based on interviews with the residents who designed these homes, this is an exceptionally rich inspirational source, with material that has never been published before; a must-have on your coffee table. Warm interiors with modern country tints summon the homely atmosphere of the old days. Art collectors, architects, designers and antique dealers who are truly on top of this new trend, provide a brazen peek into their interiors. No sterile showrooms, but real homes that have been fascinatingly designed by these creative souls.
Larsen’s home, LongHouse, located on 16 acres in East Hampton, NY, was built as a case study to exemplify a creative approach to contemporary life. He believes visitors experiencing art in living spaces have a unique learning experience - more meaningful than the best media. Inspired by the famous Japanese shrine at Ise, LongHouse contains 13,000 square feet, 18 spaces on four levels. The gardens present the designed landscape as an art form and offer a diversity of sites for the sculpture installations.

Roomscapes The Decorative Architecture of Renzo Mongiardino Renzo Mongiardino “The mention of Mongiardino still elicits instant reverence. With his alchemic blurring of eras, the sheer scope and commitment of his massive projects and insistence on valuing ambience above so-called authenticity, he attained mythic stature.” The New York Times Style Magazine Roomscapes is not only a beautiful testament to Mongiardino’s imaginative creations, the magnificent rooms he re-shaped and decorated in ancient Italian and Parisian palaces, English houses, New York apartments, but it is an important text that analyzes space, function, decoration and lighting of rooms. It is meant as a guide to conceive spaces that are inhabited through time and by time. Sketches, drawings, and models by Mongiardino, next to the images of the finished rooms, make the creative process clear and showcase his extraordinary ability and taste.

Green in your interior is the new trend. Not only growing plants and flowers but also using them as a stylish element in your interior to create the perfect atmosphere. By showing different interiors where plants are the protagonist, this book shows how you can transform your house into an oasis of green. With practical tips to give each plant the perfect spot and an overview of their characteristics.
Like Martha Stewart, Dorothy Draper was a preacher and teacher whose how-to books and Good Housekeeping columns provided middle-class housewives with affordable ideas for making their homes more functional and comfortable. Thanks to her originality as a stylist and her daring as a businesswoman, she became one of the most respected career women in the United States. In the Pink: Dorothy Draper, America's Most Fabulous Decorator, by Carleton Varney, lavishly illustrates Draper’s most important projects.
After being out of print for many years, Decorating is Fun! is being republished with its original illustrations and a new introduction by Draper’s protégé, designer Carleton Varney. Amazingly, the book is still practical, amusing and inspirational. Draper’s earnest enthusiasm feels fresh and contemporary. She believed that though there were troubles in the world, one’s home should be a refuge, a cheerful place for entertaining one’s friends and a colorful and comfortable shelter from the storm.
“This is a book on making living fun. On having your friends to the house and on how to give them a good time. And incidentally, on how to give yourself a good time as well” writes Dorothy Draper in her best selling book, Entertaining is Fun!: How To Be A Popular Hostess. With her wit and can-do flair, Draper guides aspiring hosts and hostesses on how to excel at dinner parties, holiday meals, weekend guests, weddings, and more. And indeed, Draper’s secret is simple: If a hostess has fun, her guests will too!

Anthony Foster received an invitation from a gentleman to recreate, expand, decorate and acquire artworks for a “refuge” a villa, in the spirit of contemplative serenity. The volume, which bears testimony to the outcome of this creative experience, is of great format and quality under every single aspect, and it is positioned at the confluence between a photographic volume and an art catalogue and as far as regards the profiles of the most important works it avails itself of notorious authors, such as Vittorio Sgarbi, Giancarlo Gentilini, Sandro Bellesi etc., coordinated by Marina Carmignani.

Grunge Flowers Volume 1 offers a wide array of graphics inspired by the realist, casual feel of the 1990s grunge scene. Grunge ran against the grain of the flashy aesthetic that existed in the 1980s, bringing with it irregularity and imperfections that identified its perpetrators as highly original. The floral graphics offered in this book capture this aesthetic and are ideal for adding an ‘indie’ feel to any given project. Includes 165 designs saved in 5 ways - 825 files in all - all free to use.
All the changes that occurred in art at the end of the 19th century were also reflected in the so-called minor arts, touching everyday lives: clothing, decor, design and architecture. Building on the work of Arts & Crafts, a new style emerged - Liberty - featuring organic forms and curved lines. The designs in this book, also included - free of royalties - on the accompanying DVD, capture the Liberty aesthetic perfectly. Includes 165 designs saved in 5 ways - 825 files in all - all free to use.
The work of the pioneering designer Terje Ekstrøm (1944-2013) contributed a new vitality and independence to the Norwegian design scene of the 1970s and ‘80s, at a time of cultural and social change. Ekstrøm represented a new generation of designers who challenged the ideals of the golden age of Scandinavian design. Including specially commissioned photographs of his workplace and home, this book for the first time tells the story of Ekstrøm’s design practice, characterized by an eclectic search for originality.
Logo Talks IV offers an incredibly diverse collection of visual trademarks, enabling instant communication between consumers and businesses, creating a unique impact through easily identifiable pictorial representation. Split into two parts, the book covers ‘Case Studies’, emphasizing the ideas and concepts behind the final design, and the ‘Gallery’, which showcases a wealth of contemporary design solutions from design studios all around the world.

Chateau des Fleurs is an extraordinary book on one of the most interesting private houses built in Los Angeles in recent years. To follow up the popular book Cathedrals of the Church of England, Janet Gough and the ChurchCare team now explore the other 16,000 churches of the Church of England, from the parish churches at the UK’s heart to the restrained splendor of royal foundation King’s College Chapel, Cambridge. First and foremost places of worship, they have also been integral to England’s history. One church has been chosen from each diocese to showcase their varied architecture, art, treasures and uses.
Originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1954, the Bachman-Wilson House now resides, fully restored, in the grounds of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. It is an example of what Wright called “Usonian” architecture, a distinctly American and democratic style of residential architecture he developed during the Great Depression to be within the reach of the average middle-class family, without sacrificing quality. Meticulously reconstructed from the original plans, the house opened to the public in the Fall of 2015. This fully illustrated publication highlights this classic structure, and further cements the architectural legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Madje Vollaers and Pascal Zwart founded Studio VollaertsZwart in 1991 as a design studio for interdisciplinary design and visual communication. They investigate the interaction between disciplines such as architecture, sculpture, and fashion and use this knowledge to develop new visual scenarios. VollaersZwart has developed into the ‘haute sculpture’ designers for city dressing, designing exhibitions and art and communication on the streets and in the landscape. Shaping Intuition is the design philosophy of HofmanDujardin. They design inspiring spaces with an astonishing simplicity, always focusing on quality and a personal approach. They translate intuitive feelings into architecture, interior and product design. This book for the first time features 25 of their best designs: private homes, interiors and offshore ships.
The spirit of architecture completely transformed in the 20th century and Marg magazine was at the forefront of documenting that change. The leading lights of architecture in the world wrote significant short texts for Marg that set forth not just an agenda for architecture that would shape the new India, but the habitats of a new world order. This anthology comprises a selection of these essays, as relevant now as they were when they first appeared. A lesser known and researched form of Indian architecture is that of its water monuments - a term that covers sacred temple tanks, stepwells, artificially built ponds, lakes and reservoirs, residential pools and rock-cut cisterns, canals and sluices, and ritual platforms on rivers or lakes (ghats). Water Design explores the architectural and structural framework and its variants; their artistic characteristics; the topography of waterscapes and how these determine or are determined by the urban setting; as well as their location along the trade routes which might have facilitated the cross-influencing of architectural form across regions and cultures.

Centerbrook was conceived in 1975 as a community of architects working together. This new monograph illustrates the wide range of projects completed throughout the last decade. In typical fashion of their sophisticated style and exercise in clarity, the in-depth texts and richly illustrated images communicate an indomitable focus on the architectural context of their ideas that are accessible to all. This superbly designed book showcases innovative, custom-packaging designs across a range of products, including footwear, clothing and apparel, fashion products, and more. Case studies presented are modern, contemporary examples, illustrating many well-known brands, such as Adidas, Nike, and Puma.
This title forms part of the American Institute of Architect’s esteemed Design for Aging Review program, a joint effort of the AIA Design for Aging Knowledge Community and LeadingAge. This book showcases 30 projects in the areas of architectural innovation and represents the best designs for senior citizens, including nursing homes, dementia care, assisted living, and retirement communities. Studio Fuksas is one of the most outstanding international architectural firms in the world. The past 40 years have seen the company complete more than 600 public, private, commercial and residential projects across Europe, Africa, America, Asia and Australia, and receive numerous international awards.
This is a beautifully designed and illustrated monograph on an innovative, diverse and wideranging collection of 35 projects and shows the reader a hyper-detailed analytical investigation of digital forms and their practices. It sets out how this architecture has brought a return to the real in an attempt to rethink the language and practice of architecture. Raul di Pace’s architecture is about the search to reinvent oneself, to propose new solutions, build to suit specific purposes. Heavily influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright’s work, this highly anticipated volume shows how Raul di Pace continues to reinvent its language based on the same premise: make less, splurge less, seek the essential.
Designed from the inside out, the constant threads that pervade the work of Swatt | Miers include strong relationships of architecture to land, open planning for informal living, and dissolving the boundary between inside and outside - all designed to be as beautiful to live in as to behold. This volume showcases this firm’s award-winning projects and recent accomplishments and is replete with insightful and engaging commentary across the monograph’s extraordinary collection of international works.

Tom Blackwell The Complete Paintings, 1970-2014 Linda Chase, Preface by Louis K. Meisel, Foreword by Carter Ratcliff Tom Blackwell is primarily known for his work in Photorealism, a stylistic movement noted for its ardent embrace of photographic source material. In 1969, he began a series of brashly beautiful motorcycle paintings that established him as one of the founders and foremost artists of the movement. In conjunction with his Photorealist paintings, Blackwell has produced a related body of work that is allegorical in its perspective. Combining photo-derived images, he addresses themes such as the passage of time, the fragility of nature, and the continuity that weaves through human history. The paintings, rich in symbolism and interpretive possibilities, fascinate and impress viewers with the breadth of Blackwell’s abilities. Blackwell, born in Chicago in 1938, has deftly captured the vibrancy and visual excitement of urban street life for the past four decades and has had solo exhibitions across the United States and abroad. Tom Blackwell: The Complete Paintings, 1970-2014 is a comprehensive study of the artist’s work as well as his artistic development and process, and includes a compilation of his early paintings through to his most recent works.

Jheronimus Bosch (c.1450-1516) was a Netherlandish painter, whose work was full of extraordinary imaginings and fantastic imagery. 2016 marks the 500th anniversary of his death. On this occasion, Lannoo Publishers launches the glossy and attractively priced pocket-sized guide Masterpiece: Jheronimus Bosch. It shows the paintings of the Dutch master like you have never seen them before; it includes full-page images of astonishing details. There is a commentary on the images by Till-Holger Borchert, the director of Musea Brugge. Archist is a playful interpretation of the expressive language and aesthetics of some of the world’s most popular artists. For example, Babina tried to imagine what a house designed by Dalí or a museum conceived by Miró would look like. The illustrations represent an imaginary and imagined world of shapes. Federico Babina finds great pleasure in imagining architecture designed and constructed through the interpretation of an artist’s language.
The catalogue of the exhibition Looking at the World Around You: Contemporary Works from Qatar Museums features 160 selected works from the collections of Qatar Museums. It is a celebration of modern and contemporary art that attempts to illustrate the Arab world’s perspective on the international art scene, from Francisco de Goya’s ca. 1825 tiny ivory painting, which inspired his exhibition’s curatorial concept, to Wael Shawky’s expansive cinematic re-imaginings of the past, completed in 2015.
Chandigarh is in India tells the stories of the city of Chandigarh through the works of Indian and Western artists. The architect Le Corbusier’s weathered buildings have long circulated as the dominant image of Chandigarh; there is, however, much else that is of importance. Seeking to present differing articulations by artists about Chandigarh, the book consciously makes room for all the freely associative, fantastical and complex responses that make this city so beguiling. It explores how the architecture and the city itself have been used, adopted and adapted in the creative process. Based on new research, Rembrandt's Naked Truth features 17th-century nude studies that have never before been brought together in such large numbers in The Rembrandt House Museum in The Hague. It will be the first time that Rembrandt’s frank approach to drawing nudes will be examined in depth and brought to the notice of a wide audience. In the 17th century Rembrandt and his pupils followed the new trend of drawing from models, but Rembrandt’s approach differed from his contemporaries’. When Rembrandt and his pupils drew nude models they talked about art, beauty and transience - subjects that were as sensitive in those days as they are now

Guido Cagnacci (1601-1663) was one of the most original and idiosyncratic painters in 17thcentury Italy. This is the first book in English devoted to Cagnacci in almost 30 years, examining his astonishing life and eccentric work; from his early religious paintings to the later canvases showing ancient heroines and allegorical and biblical figures, often in defiantly sensual attitudes.

For the casual and curious art lover, this high-end guide presents the reader with a visual journey through the highlights of this art form since the 1960s, exploring the contentious question of what defines installation art. The showcased artworks include a broad and diverse range of canonical and well-received examples of this medium, demonstrating the characteristics that persist in this theatrical and immersive medium.
Collage artist Eugenia Loli uses photography scanned from vintage magazines and science publications to create bizarre visual narratives that borrow from aspects of pop art, dada, and traditional surrealism. Born in Greece, Loli lives in California and her work appears in diverse publications such as Cosmopolitan, New Scientist and Wired. In this book she chooses 32 of her favorite pieces and explains the stories behind them. The juxtaposition of works by Kentridge and Dürer underscores the similarities and differences of the two artists. Starting from Kentridge’s critical review of modernity, which challenges the era’s claim to rationality and sophistication, the focus then shifts to the art of Dürer, whose works reflect the profound political, religious, and social upheavals of his time. What emerges is a dynamic dialogue between 20th Century art and the Renaissance. Marking the 10th anniversary of Karel Appel’s death, this survey of 22 paintings and sculptures provides a fresh look at his oeuvre; revisiting Appel's early interest in children's art, his stylistic experiments, and his highly personal and abstract interpretation of traditional subjects like the nude, the portrait, and the urban or rural landscape. Published to coincide with an exhibition at Phillips Collection, Washington DC in summer 2016. Night Studio is a deeply personal account of growing up in the shadow of a great artist, a daughter's quest to better understand her father, based on letters and notes by the artist, and interviews with those who knew him. First published to critical acclaim in 1988, this beautifully designed new edition is richly illustrated with a new selection of photographs and paintings, many in color
Franz Marc's famous Sketchbook from the Battlefield contains thirty-six small-format pencil drawings that were produced between March and June 1915 - just a few months before the artist’s death in March 1916. These precious sheets, which are among the last works produced by Marc, are his artistic legacy.

De Clerck was a contemporary of Peter Paul Rubens. His mastery of ingenious pictorial strategy made him a leading player in one of the most ambitious projects history has ever seen. For those who know how to read them, his paintings of Archduke Albert of Austria and his wife Isabella tell a story of power, political promises, and grandiose ambition. Most of all, they are supreme examples of image-building.
With vivid memories of his first visit to the Scottish National Gallery in the 1970s and his initial encounter with Hugo van der Goes’ The Trinity Altarpiece, Rembrandt’s A Woman in Bed, Velázquez's An Old Woman Cooking Eggs and Degas’ Diego Martelli, Robert Storr discusses the shifting balance of museum collections from historically ‘certified’ classics to art whose status and significance remains in active contention and from singular ‘treasures’ to ensembles that speak to the larger scope of an artist’s endeavor.
The restoration of the Sistine Chapel - a singular experience that lasted fourteen years. Michelangelo and I is the story of the restoration, told by the restorer himself. In this book, Gianluigi Colalucci reveals not only the burden he felt under the weight of the enormous responsibility of his task, but also the fun involved behind the scenes.
Today’s world is the product of the late middle ages. In what is now called ‘Flanders’, a new kind of man emerged. A practical man, an entrepreneur, a critical man who no longer believed what church and nobility tried to tell him. In this book young researchers take us back to the middle ages. This art book has a fresh academic point of view: the economical history of the middle ages from the viewpoint of different social groups, with surprising results on clichéd thoughts such as the passive countryside, the dark middle ages and the role of women in society. The Nature of the Beast is a comprehensive retrospective of artist Kathy Ruttenberg’s work in the past six years including ceramics, drawings, and watercolors. With text by curator and art historian Charles Stuckey, the book also features a tour of her eccentric estate and studio in upstate New York where pigs, rabbits, chickens, and goats roam free. Her most recent show at Stux Gallery in Manhattan for the Fall of 2014 culminate in a conversation between Ruttenberg and Sir John Richardson which is also featured.

Bawden’s influence on 20th-century design is beyond measure. Edward Bawden: Design is the newest title in ACC’s award-winning Design series and an excellent introduction to the work of Edward Bawden. This fascinating book illustrates every aspect of his creativity, and is beautifully illustrated throughout. His designs still resonate strongly with young designers more than a quarter-of-a-century after his death.
Frank Dicksee was born at a time when the first wave of Pre-Raphaelitism was beginning to make its presence felt in Britain and he inherited the romantic spirit of the movement. During 15 years of research, the author has located most of Dicksee’s paintings and has written a full history of his life and works. He includes a catalog raisonné and illustrates almost 300 pictures, many of which are previously unpublished.
This book uses the busts on the Chantrey Wall in the Ashmolean Museum to give an introduction to the remarkable career of Francis Chantrey (1781-1841), and the collection in the Ashmolean. The book charts the progress of the busts from Chantrey’s workshop to a Victorian national treasure. The book begins and ends with the Chantrey Wall, one of the most photographed displays of recent years. The book will give nonspecialist readers an introduction to one of the giants of British sculpture, and one of the most important sculpture collections in the UK. Stief Desmet (1973) is one of the new names in the Belgian art world. His unusual painting technique sets him apart from the many followers of artists such as Luc Tuymans and Michaël Borremans. Desmet questions his own position as a contemporary artist alongside the “golden river” landscape painters (Leieschilders) from his youth, who immortalized the landscape in their pastoral works.
This book assembles three hundred drawings of artist ARPAÏS du bois, and constitutes an anthology of her daily drawing practice, reflecting upon her own intimate artistic universe. With text contributions of Lòrànd Hegyi, director of the Musée d'Art Moderne de Saint-Étienne and former director of the Ludwig Foundation Vienna, and of Damien Sausset, curator and artistic director of La Transpalette in Bourges.

Book three in a series celebrating the phenomenon of street art in the world’s greatest cities. A photographer’s view of Rio De Janeiro’s transient street art scene. Celebrating the vibrancy, creativity and color of the movement and documenting a time and place in its history. Artist’s work include Wark Rocinha, NATA, Vida One Love, MEMI, Cranio and Panmela Castro with many more both celebrated and unknown. These books show the color, detail and skill in these works, showcasing the talents of these contemporary artists.
This accessible and beautifully produced guide explores both the rapid changes of recent years and their impact. Contemporary art was once considered inaccessible, elitist or even facile, but is now enjoyed by millions of gallery visitors every year. The Contemporary Art Book pinpoints the key events that have contributed to this change. Ambitious redevelopments and new constructions - such as London’s Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou in Paris, Museo Guggenheim Bilbao, Kiasma in Helsinki and Kunst-Werke Berlin - have led to record numbers of visitors. Art collectors have also been influential, notably Charles Saatchi, whose vigorous promotion of the Young British Artists (or YBA) brought them celebrity status.
This beautifully illustrated book explores Pop art’s origins in modern European avant-garde movements such as Cubism and Dadaism, prior to its true beginnings in early 1950's London with the Independent Group and their fascination with American popular culture leading to the name “Pop”. Guiding the reader through the work of some of the most well known practitioners, such as Warhol and Lichtenstein, this compelling book also travels the world to examine how Pop art influenced artists as far afield as Italy, Spain, Finland, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. POP! The World of Pop Art explains how - and why - this movement appealed to so many diverse artists on so many levels, including often overlooked female artists who were central to the Pop art scene. Finally, POP! considers the influence of Pop art on other genres. With 15 faithfully reproduced documents, including items from the studios of a number of artists, POP! The World of Pop Art gives a unique insight into this celebrated movement.

Theater collective Abattoir Fermé and the Kasteel van Gaasbeek join forces in their search for the essence of decadence. By means of the works of artists such as Félicien Rops, Erwin Olaf, Jan Fabre, Man Ray, Marc Langrange, and many more, they investigate the manifestation of decadence. Disappointed by the world’s imperfection, artists and intellectuals at the end of the 19th century expressed their disapproval for the ruling values. In contemporary art also this fine line between sensual refinement and perversity, aesthetics and the morbid, taboo and norm is a recurring theme. Maria Sibylla Merian was a German naturalist and scientific illustrator. She is considered by none other than David Attenborough to be among the most significant contributors to the field of entomology. In 1705, Merian published Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, for which she became famous. No more than 30 copies of this masterwork are left worldwide. In 2017, it will be 300 years since Maria Sibylla Merian passed away. To mark this occasion, a facsimile of Merian's highly successful book will be released. A must-have for any lover of natural history. Struck by the grandiose sight of the mountains of the Ossau valley, Delacroix reproduced the landscapes; amongst his best. Upon his return to Paris, alerted by the novelist George Sand, he discovered the Ojibwe tribe. Eleven of its members had been brought to Europe and Delacroix portrayed them on several pages of the same carnet in moving sketches. The Carnet des Pyrenées was acquired by the Louvre in 2004 and classified as a national treasure.
Donated in 1922 to the Louvre by Léon Bonnat, these 23 drawings are amongst the finest life studies of a model by a 15th-century Florentine artist. Despite being named after Pollaiuolo, modern critics have attributed it to Maso Finiguerra, goldsmith and niellist. The booklet is reproduced here for the first time as a quasifacsimile. The commentary that accompanies it presents the profile of the two artists and the relationship of the carnet to workshop practices.
Witkin & Witkin is an intimate and striking book that brings together, for the first time, the work of two American artists: a photographer and a painter that not only share DNA - they are identical twins - but also uncanny thematic parallels. Through different voices, testimonies of the people closest to the brothers, both personally and professionally, the Witkin story is retold by family members, partners, models, students, collectors and promoters of their work.

The artists in the Hardy family, Heywood, James, Frederick Daniel and several others, have always been popular with collectors. However, this is the first comprehensive assessment of their work, based on previously unpublished material and with illustrations of all their major paintings. The book’s author, Kimber Hardy, a descendant of the Hardy painters, has called upon a significant collection of letters and documents about the artists. His revealing, intelligent narrative on their lives and works provides engaging accompaniment to the wealth of color reproductions featured in the book.
The work of the Norwegian artist Bård Breivik unfolds over more than 1,000 pages in a stunning presentation of a career in sculpture and Conceptual art encompassing more than forty years. Thematically arranged source material, including interviews, sketches, anecdotes and reviews, elucidate the phenomenon that is Bård Breivik. The sheer volume of his oeuvre is also reflected in his choice of materials: he switches as if by sleight of hand between sand and snow, wood, rock and steel. In a series that has continued to evolve since 1986, he has persisted in working on vertically arranged forms 120 cm in length, which have been designed with the means of differing cultural traditions, thus retaining their uniqueness.
During the day, painter and graphic artist Fred Bervoets (1942) works almost routinely at his large format etchings. At night, he lets his imagination run wild. The hundreds of drawings, sketches, doodles and paintings done in the margin today fill almost the entire ground floor of his studio home. The one thing they have in common, apart from their maker, is their modest A4 format. The spontaneity of these small works on paper forms the heart of this book, which also includes Bervoets’ more monumental etchings since 2013. This one-of-its kind “print room” offers an impressive kaleidoscopic selfportrait of an absolutely unique artist.

Incorporating the various schools and eras, and presented in a loose chronology, this guide offers concise commentaries on the key works in the National Gallery of Ireland’s impressive collections. The collection, which ranges in date from 1300 to the present day, comprises over 15,000 works including paintings, sculpture, works on paper, photographs, icons, miniatures, objets d’art, furniture, books and archives.
The National Gallery of Ireland, founded in 1854, is Ireland's major national cultural institution devoted to the care and collection of fine art. The Gallery houses an impressive collection of European art together with the world’s most comprehensive survey of Irish art. Incorporating the various schools and eras, this guide offers illuminating commentaries on a broad range of the important and much-loved works within the collection. Artists of The Spanish Golden Age such as Murillo, Zurbarán and Velázquez were the key to instigating a truly passionate appreciation of Spanish art among the great collectors, as well as the public institutions or those that sprang from private initiative after the Industrial Revolution. There are notable sets of works created by Spanish artists in the United Kingdom; this book assembles the best Spanish paintings to be found on British soil. This is an intimate look at the friendship between ceramicist Robert Picault and Pablo Picasso. Following the war, a group of artists, including Picasso, went to the coastal town of Vallauris. There he met Picault, forming a friendship, while collaborating artistically. Examining Picault’s pottery and production as well as the short films Picasso made and Picault photographed through unpublished documents and photographs - the book shows this idyllic moment. Lord Hindlip presided over London’s auction house Christie’s during a time of great excitement in the art world. The 1960s, ‘70s and early ‘80s saw the wholesale denuding of country houses and ransacking of attics right across the country - yielding genuine treasures and fakes in equal measure. Both memoir and art book, Triumphs and Disasters recounts Lord Hindlip’s career through the major works of art that have passed through his hands over the last fifty years. Right in the heart of the Civic District, the National Gallery Singapore occupies the neoclassical City Hall and former Supreme Court. Architects for the new Gallery were challenged to create a distinct identity for the art space while simultaneously celebrating the architectural, cultural and historical significance of the sites. The winning design, by French architects Studio Milou Singapore, will establish the Gallery’s standing amongst the leading museums and galleries in Asia.

Changes in color may completely alter the way we see a painting. When conserving paintings our comprehension of these alterations can influence the way we display and restore them. This volume contains papers from the ICON conference ‘Appearance and Reality’. It provides an overview of color change in paintings, from the work of the old masters to modern and contemporary painters. From plants to insects, natural dyes have been used since before recorded history. This book examines the possibilities offered by natural dyes, such as staining and fabric patterning. This work focuses on the sources of dyes that can grow wild in Finland, or are suitable for cultivation in the southern regions. The reader is presented with color dyes from different sources and provides guidance for dyeing and textile painting. This volume is the sixth in what is now to become a regular biennial publication which presents the recent research into the conservation, structure, materials, history etc. of paintings by past and present staff and students (including early career interns) of the Hamilton Kerr Institute.

Tempera in Easel Painting around 1900 Karoline Beltinger and Jilleen Nadolny (Eds)
The use of tempera paints in easel painting around 1900 has evolved to become a field of research at SIK-ISEA. SIK-ISEA worked with Art Analysis and Research to set up a network of art technologists known as the “Tempera group”. In the last four years, the group has investigated a number of hitherto unexplored aspects of “tempera” as a historical phenomenon. The findings of this joint research are published here.

This book is the first to be dedicated to a comprehensive study with English translation (plus extensive commentary) of the early 15th century Strasbourg Manuscript - believed to have been the oldest German-language source for the study of Northern European painting techniques and considered to be the northern counterpart to Cennini’s Il Libro dell arte. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are carbonbased molecules which, in museums and galleries, are often found as indoor pollutants. This book focuses on acetic and formic acid often present in wood and wood products, adhesives, sealants, paints, polyester and rubber as well in the outdoor atmosphere.

Power and Protection: Islamic Art and the Supernatural is a ground-breaking investigation of divinatory arts in the Islamic world. This part of the Islamic tradition has hitherto received limited attention, leaving a fascinating and rich chapter of Islam’s cultural production largely unexplored. Essays by three leading experts contextualize over 100 extraordinary objects produced between the 12th and the 20th centuries, demonstrating the currency of astrology, geomancy, bibliomancy, dream interpretation, and the science of divination through letters at all levels of society. In an age where contemporary art has changed in mediums and language, scope and intent, this book weighs in on the moodiness, methodology, efforts, mental blitzkriegs and inner workings of modern master of art Syed Haider Raza. This book unravels the workings of Raza’s oeuvre and life at the age of 94 years. It is an attempt at appraising and transmitting the prevailing winds of intent and insight in the works of Raza through conversations with him about contemporary art.
This monograph forefronts the ludic quality in the work of Maqbool Fida Husain, postcolonial India’s most iconic modernist and also arguably its most playful. His Images of the Raj or the Raj Series comprise paintings densely packed with bodies and objects, English and native, men and women (and some animals too), who are brought together in visual action in a manner that is enormously revealing of the contradictions of British rule in India, even as they expose the ironies of postcolonial India’s tryst with its destiny. Charting the hitherto untold story of Indian horse racing, Horse Racing in India: A Royal Legacy is a monumental effort to etch the highlights of Indian racing. It recalls, with its exquisitely detailed content and breathtaking photographs, the luster and old charm of the sport as it used to be, and testifies to the passion that is still held for horse racing in India. Horse Racing in India offers a singular, panoramic view of the sport’s existence and remedies the issue of want of comprehensive information about Indian racing. In 1913, photos of The Nataraja bronze from the Chennai Museum inspired Auguste Rodin’s text “The Dance of Shiva”. Written at the end of his life, this vision of Shiva, “Lord of actor-dancers”, revealed the underlying links between Rodin’s dance sculptures (1910), the Cambodian dancer drawings, and his private collection of antique Venus and Buddha sculptures and wood carvings from India. Through his androgynous vision of Shiva the cosmic dancer, Rodin invites us not only to a new reading of his work but also opens the door to a new vision of Indian theater and dance. The connections that he suggests between sculpture, poetry, dance, theater, music, photography and architecture have a particular contemporary resonance.

This is the first work to explore fully the history, art, and craft of the Japanese hanging scroll, or kakejiku, from its ancient Indian, Tibetan, and Chinese origins, which was introduced to Japan as early as the 6th century. It is proof of the scroll's timeless qualities that it remains a fixture in traditional Japanese rooms, and continues to inform the design of modern interiors.
Trained under the supervision of two important modernists Ramkinkar Baij and Sarbari Roy Choudhury, KS Radhakrishnan has developed an inimitable style which emphasises fluid, dynamic, extra-ordinary body types using two characters Musui and Maiya. R Sivakumar's informative essay on the sculptural journey of KS Radhakrishnan, included here, is an art historical gem for serious lovers of art.

The author names the genus, the species, the short name of the botanist who classified the plant, and the family name of the plant.
Jaipur has drawn upon the arts to carve a niche for itself. This book tells the story of the visual arts, both commissioned and acquired, by the royal family of Jaipur over a period of more than two centuries. Traces the body of work of Iftikhar M. Kadri, founder, partner and principal architect of IMK who began his practice in Mumbai in the 1950s. Kadri’s career charts not only an important journey in India's history, but he is also someone who contributed to the discourses on Modern and Traditional architecture in India, working within the forces of real estate and commerce, and with state, private and corporate clients. In this book the epic Mahabharata, eulogised and worshiped by devotees worldwide, takes center stage in the artist’s current creative repertoire. His paintings, mostly in large size and bold colors, engage with the phenomenal Sanskrit epic of ancient India.
Be it capitalizing on the kindness of strangers in Mongolia or redefining the limits of individual freedom in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the uniqueness of the book lies in the simplicity of narration. These journeys do not dwell on destinations, but life moments which define the purpose of travel, leading the voyager to a completeness not experienced by any other form of entertainment. This book is a delightful collection of introspective essays on the Garhwal Himalaya and life around it. The author draws from his memories of being brought up in the mountains. With affection, Ganesh Saili writes of his many journeys through these valleys wrapped in the mist, travelogues that evoke details of natural history interwoven into the delicate social fabric of mountain life. The work covers various forms of Thai money from their origins in the ancient kingdoms and empire, including the production of pressed silver coins; the use of metallic ingots known as toks; elongated silver bars commonly known as tiger tongues; bent ingots known as chiang money; metallic alloy, glass and porcelain tokens and most famously pot duang, commonly called bullet money. Blue-stocking Julie Gallet is an independentminded Parisian who has made what her English mother describes as an imprudent match. Following her husband to the Far East, she comes to stay with Michael Crawfurd, her British diplomat cousin and discovers a glittering city of golden spires and colonial intrigue as the Kingdom is caught between France’s territorial ambitions and England’s quest for supremacy and influence in Asia.

Rolex History, Icons and Record-Breaking Models Mara Cappelletti and Osvaldo Patrizzi The history of Rolex is inextricably linked to its founder Hans Wilsdorf, who took the first steps in the world of Swiss watchmaking as he dreamed about a timepiece that could be worn around the wrist. This experimental research led Rolex to achieve its highest goals in both technological innovation and in the use of the finest materials alone. Including essays with a historical and technical slant, in-depth descriptions of the most representative pieces and a brief glossary, the pages in this book sparkle with golden hands, diamond-studded dials and patent-leather watchbands, illustrated in period photographs and macro-detail. The volume ends with a chapter dedicated to the most amazing auctions that saw the sale of the Geneva-based company's vintage watches. Whether their passion is for contemporary art or seventeenth-century furniture, Islamic tiles or Renaissance Madonnas, the collectors featured in this book share a common approach, a shared philosophy. Their collections are an integral part of their living spaces, and their acquisitions form a natural setting for their daily lives. This book therefore invites the reader into a succession of interiors that are as varied as they are remarkable. It presents a highly individual and - unlike the impersonal perfection of so many books on interiors - ‘lived-in’ view of these unique spaces, which reflect the tastes and personalities of a galaxy of distinguished figures in the contemporary art world. The treasures of the Alba family represent more than 500 years of patronage and collecting of European art of the highest quality and importance. One hundred thirtyeight exemplary objects from these vast holdings will be presented at The Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University, Dallas and then travel to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville. Coinciding with the Meadows Museum’s golden anniversary, the exhibition Treasures from the House of Alba: 500 Years of Art and Collecting and this companion publication trace the history of the Alba family from the 15th century through the present day through the works they collected. The Rawlinson collection of seal matrices in the University of Oxford is the most important early collection of European seal matrices to survive. Created by Dr Richard Rawlinson in the first half of the eighteenth century, it consists of 830 matrices ranging in date from the 13th to the early 18th century. Four introductory chapters which set the scene for the collecting of seal matrices, tell the life of Richard Rawlinson and Giovanni Andrea Lorenzani, analyze their collections and relate the history of the collection after Rawlinson's death in 1755. One hundred seals, all illustrated, are described in detail along with much unpublished data. The Wristwatch Handbook is presented in an accessible, usefully illustrated and goodhumored style throughout its almost 400 pages. Providing the reader with a comprehensive anatomy of the mechanical wristwatch, it is the foundational text for the novice and the reference book for the seasoned enthusiast. Where other horological books focus on advising the collector, on a single brand or key historical figures, this compendium takes a detailed look at mechanical wristwatch complications (functions). The reader will gain the ability to identify a complicated watch from twenty paces and perform a top-to-bottom assessment of even the most exotic timepiece in a matter of seconds.

With passion and expert insight, Frank Nievergelt compiled an impressive collection over 45 years of more than 900 pieces of contemporary ceramics. Over 100 leading figures of the international ceramic scene from 1970 to 2015 are represented in the collection, the emphasis of which is on newer objects. In this publication, the most significant pieces of this renowned collection are presented in a selection of forty-one artists.
The Sidney R. Knafel Collection of French Faïence features a broad collection of over 150 pieces of grand feu (high fired) French faïence principally from the factories of Nevers, Rouen, Marseilles, Moustiers, Moulins, and Lyon, ranging from 1580 to 1780. Amassed over the past fifty years, this exceptional collection encompasses an engaging variety of the most important faïence centers of this creative period, representing many unique styles. This impressive collection is a rarity in private hands and is not often deeply collected nor displayed by museums. Parisian jeweler Lydia Courteille has been making a very special name for herself over the past thirty years; with her avant-garde and unusual jewelry designs, she has been keeping the Place Vendôme Jewelry Houses on their toes. Famous for her memento mori and vanity rings, she combines symbols of faith with reminders of mortality to create a juxtaposition of meanings for the wearer to ponder upon. Her jewels have a presence, a femininity, designed by a woman, they demand respect; they are for strong, confident, women. Taking the emblematic Exposition des arts décoratifs de Paris of 1925 as its starting point, this catalog traces the development of the Art Deco movement around the globe in every domain - France, Serbia, Brazil, Belgium, to name just a few countries. The book includes a variety of topics such as architecture, jewels, fashion, and books.
Upon the discovery of Tanzanite in Tanzania a specimen was entrusted to the stonecutter Manuel de Souza, who shared some samples with distinguished gemologists. While the prospector thought that he had found some sapphires, he found he had unearthed something altogether extraordinary. The new gem immediately caught the eye of Tiffany & Co. Tanzanite gained further renown when in 2002 the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) named tanzanite, together with turquoise, the birthstones for December. Tanzanite’s transformations have ultimately placed it alongside the most precious of precious gems.

Following several years of extensive research, conservation, and photography, Saint Louis Art Museum's major 2016 exhibition highlights 50 carpets and two Persian pleasure tents assembled by one of the most important early twentieth-century American carpet collectors, James F. Ballard. The unique contents of the collection, outstanding quality of many of the rugs, and detailed technical content make this book a major contribution to the study of Islamic textiles and the field of Islamic art history as a whole. The compelling visual nature of the pieces will appeal to art historians, rug collectors, and the general public alike.
As one of the very few books exclusively devoted to Late Roman, Early Byzantine and Early Islamic textiles from Egypt, this book serves both as a sourcebook for scholars as well as a stimulation for non-specialists. With 15 essays written by specialists on detailed studies such as the technology of pleating, the radiocarbon dating of well-known textiles, the fittings of child tunics, and others.
Scotland once had a flourishing industry in textiles, ranging from sewing machines and thread to the manufacture of linen, wool and cotton. In her newest and most wide ranging book yet, Janet Rae uses quilts to illustrate the country's textile heritage and influence. Exploring themes such as the artistic impact of Turkey Red and the first non-bleeding red dye; personal stories of men and women quiltmakers up to the present day give insight into a lasting heritage. The book is illustrated with 140 images from private and museum collections as well as stately homes.

GARDENS & NATURAL HISTORY
Ancient Trees of the National Trust Edward Parker and Brian Muelaner The National Trust is one of the largest private custodians of ancient trees in Europe. Amidst its properties are oak trees that support entire ecosystems, yew trees that were fully grown before the Romans arrived in Britain, and woodland that has remained virtually unchanged since the last ice age. Ancient Trees of the National Trust is a love letter to Britain's venerable trees. Author Edward Parker is a highly commended nature photographer and an expert on his subject, and his enchanting book explores the historical and cultural associations of ancient trees and their biological importance, as well as their sheer beauty. It encourages us to pause and look up at their gnarled branches and appreciate these silent witnesses which have remained rooted and constant as the centuries have flickered by and the world around them has changed.

Imagining Ichabod My Journey into 18th-Century America through History, Food, and a Georgian House Paula Bennett Prompted by a serendipitous visit to a bookstore, an epiphany leads Paula Bennett and her husband, Harvey, to southern Maine where they spontaneously buy the General Ichabod Goodwin House with its original nineover-six windows, wide-plank painted wood floors, early Georgian moldings, and an 8-ft wide hearth perfect for cooking. While learning about 18th-century décor to inform the furnishing of her historic home, Paula diligently researches the house's first inhabitants. She begins to imagine daily life in 18th-century New England, specifically for the first two Goodwins who lived on their property a father and son, both named Ichabod. Join Paula and Harvey as their shared passion for history leads to an archaeological dig outside their front door, connecting them even more to life in early America, and their avid interest in the culinary arts leads the author to explore and recreate historic recipes, 25 of which are woven throughout the text. Their journey culminates in cherry-picking from the past, recreating aspects of the 18th-century and adapting them into their 21st-century lifestyle.

If tomatoes are susceptible to a certain fungus that sweet pepper is resistant to, the only way a farmer can protect his tomatoes at the moment is by spraying fungicides. Through GM technology the sweet pepper’s resistance to fungi can be transferred to tomatoes. Result? The tomato plant is able to protect itself and fungicides no longer need to be sprayed. This book aims to offer an honest and balanced insight into how GM crops could be useful in solving current and future issues facing agriculture: from potatoes that can protect themselves against late blight, to trees that can be used in biofuel production, to rice that contains more vitamins, and wheat with a safe form of gluten. In the mid-seventies, Guido van der Groen and his colleagues at the Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp discovered the deadly virus Ebola. Forty years later, the virus breaks out again in West-Africa. Why is this virus seemingly unstoppable? Could the epidemic have been prevented? Do we have to fear an unprecedented pandemic? To answer these questions, Guido van der Groen, an internationally renowned virus fighter, goes back to where it all began. This book is an exciting read, which makes critical observations about the present pandemic psychoses and which urges authorities to invest in durable solutions. This lavishly illustrated book accompanies the London Science Museum’s landmark new Mathematics: The David and Claudia Harding Gallery due to open in Fall 2016. It includes an absorbing series of essays by world-leading experts in the history and modern practice of mathematics, alongside vivid accounts of mathematical work underpinning some of our most fundamental human concerns, from life and death to war and peace, money, trade, beauty and our attempts to control nature’s most elemental forces. Mathematics uses the world-class collections of the Science Museum to offer a vivid vision of the people behind 400 years of mathematical practice, driven by problems that affect us all. Informed by both traditional and digital techniques, “microfactories” operate within a contemporary setting, forging new rules for a unique business strategy. To quantify a company as a “microfactory” means to elevate their status. They operate small foot print, extremely agile companies that communicate directly with their customers. They do not rely on large production facilities; rather on their own, on-demand micro-factories. Living in both the physical city and within a new, expansive, digitally networked community, they define a new breed of commerce. Unbound by location, we see the emergence of a new global landscape benefitting from the intimacy of local actors. This is not your fathers' globalism, but one shaped by the transparency of social networks.

This stunning book documents a collection of 66 extraordinary pieces of petrified wood, mainly from Western United States (Arizona, Oregon, Washington). Specially photographed they are shown in their entirety and in magnificent details. Petrified wood is formed from fallen trees that in the absence of oxygen and microbes, and with water containing minerals, through a replacement process called permineralization, slowly transform into visually spectacular fossils, creating splendid works of art. Petrified wood has been found throughout the world, but actual petrified forests are truly noteworthy in the United States, the most famous being the Chinle Formation forest of Arizona. Mountains and Lowlands explores the relationship between Ancient Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) and Iran providing a detailed but accessible account covering the period 6000 BC AD 650, from the development of the first agricultural communities to the coming of Islam. The story is told through the superlative Ancient Near Eastern collections in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, supplemented by images of photographs of archeological sites and of iconic pieces in other collections including the Louvre, Paris. The discussion is further supported by six maps commissioned especially for this publication.
This catalog is a collective work bringing together contributions from French, American, and British specialists in this field, to shed light on the importance of the relationship between France and America in the closing years of the Ancien Régime. Richly illustrated throughout, it documents the events of the War of Independence, before exploring the consequences of the entry of France into the war, the siege of Yorktown, and the peace treaty signed at Versailles in 1783. Finally, it analyzes the origins and development of the mythology of the ‘American Revolution’ in both France and the United States, a source of enduring inspiration for artists and history painters. The story of the Guards in the First World War epitomizes the shattering historical significance of the conflict. These elite regiments fought in every major engagement on the Western Front - Mons, Loos, the Aisne, the Somme, Passchendaele - and sustained incalculable losses. Simon Doughty’s account is the first truly comprehensive record of the regiments’ contribution to the war, describing every action in which they participated and tracing the complex history of their formation and dissolution. As eminent historian Sir Michael Howard’s introduction makes clear, the experience of the Guards is a peculiarly poignant tale within the wider narrative of the War.

In the early 2000s two albums of drawings were discovered in storage in the State Hermitage Museum Purchased by Catherine the Great in 1783, they had lain unnoticed for over 200 years. Hermitage curator Mikhail Dedinkin identified the artist as John Spyers, Capability Brown’s draughtsman. The drawings in the first album are exclusively of Hampton Court Palace and its parks and gardens, where Capability Brown was Chief Gardener to King George III for the last 20 years of his life. The second album contains a mixture of landscapes, architectural drawings and studies. This book reproduces all 149 drawings.

BIOGRAPHY
Developing My Life William Zeckendorf Jr. with Joan Duncan Oliver In 1986, the New York Times called William Zeckendorf Jr. “Manhattan's most active real-estate developer,” a judgment borne out by Zeckendorf's fascinating memoir. The second generation of a legendary family of developers, “Bill” Zeckendorf was a developer with a social conscience, not only putting up buildings but opening neglected parts of the city and transforming whole communities. Among the projects Zeckendorf chronicles in detail - and with rich documentary illustrations - are the Columbia, which set off a building boom on the Upper West Side; the four-acre Worldwide Plaza, a landmark in West Midtown; Queens West, the first residential project on the waterfront in Queens; the enormous Ronald Reagan Office Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C.; and numerous projects in Santa Fe, his beloved second home.

The Definitive Maria Callas Life of a Diva: The Unseen Pictures Marzotto Foundation, Karl Van Zoggel Maria Callas is the definition of an icon. Perhaps the most renowned and influential opera singer of all time, she is revered not just for her otherworldly voice and dramatic flair but for her passion, beauty and innate sense of style. The fire and intensity of her personal life paralleled the dramatic roles she interpreted so passionately. Working closely with the Fondaziono Proge Marzotto, the Italian arts trust who acquired the archive of Maria Callas in 2013; and Karl van Zoggel, head of the International Maria Callas Club, ROADS is delighted to present The Definitive Maria Callas: The Life of a Diva in Unseen Pictures. A lavish visual biography, the book showcases never-before-seen intimate letters, personal photographs and Callas's private collection of recipes.

The Porsche 912 was introduced in the spring of 1965, and from 1966 to 1969 about 32,000 vehicles were built. Apart from the Porsche 912 Coupé (1965 to 1969) this book also presents the Porsche 912 Targa (1966 to 1969). Less wellknown, but all the more intriguing, is the story of the Porsche 912E, built in 1976 just for the US market, and of which only 2099 specimens exist.
The Porsche 959 was quite the “super Porsche”. Its history of development is the dream of every engineer. The goal was not just to build a profitable sports car, but the world’s best car. This Porsche 959 trilogy, limited to 1.500 copies, is like the car itself: passionate, concentrated, spectacular. Three books are included in a luxury slipcase the “Picture Book” with opulent photos showing all stages of development of the Porsche 959, the “Story Book” with the car’s thrilling story, and finally the “Fact Book” with all relevant dates, figures and facts concerning the 959. With 100 years of business history RECARO represents the perfect combination of design, quality, and safety in the production of seats. On occasion of the 100th anniversary, and for the first time, the luxury volume gives a comprehensive overview of the complete history of the long-established Stuttgart Company. Numerous photos and graphics show the brand's development over the decades as well as the special typology of the product range: car seat, child safety seat, airline seat.
Barnfinds are currently rather trendy, but the phenomenon is not new. This beautifully illustrated book presents the finds of Heribert Niehues. For decades the avowed fan of classic cars traveled the USA and found sensational cars. His atmospheric photographs show how they become one with the rough landscapes of the Wild West or the rich green of the Deep South if they’ve been given enough time. But cars are not always the main aspect: accompanying fuel stations and motels that were left behind but still wear an aura of the good old times, they too found their way into this book. There is a new quality to be found in the world of automobile magazines: Porsche Klassik has been published by Delius Klasing for all enthusiasts of historical Porsches. With Porsche Klassik Delius Klasing publishes the ultimate magazine twice a year, with fascinating stories about the people and their machines each based around the legendary Porsche. The magazine dives into the history of the brand and its models and shows new perspectives from the Porsche history. Porsche Klassik is produced in close collaboration with Porsche AG.

From tea with the Mad Hatter to a game of croquet with the Queen of Hearts, Alice's adventures are filled with wonder, delight and occasional frustration. Dotted with iconic characters, frustrating riddles and memorable quotations, Lewis Caroll's classic tale is a satirical masterpiece that has inspired countless adaptations. Follow Alice down the rabbit hole, as she sets off on a journey that has inspired children and adults alike in the 150 years since its original publication. Be careful what you wish for! When five children - Robert, Anthea, Cyril, Jane and baby Lamb - move from London to rural Kent, they are amazed to find an ancient sandfairy while playing in a gravel pit. This “Psammead” has the power to grant wishes, but the children will soon discover that wishing is a dangerous business and the consequences may not always be to their liking. When an old sea captain passes away while staying at his mother's inn, young Jim Hawkins has no idea what lies in store just across the horizon. With the old captain's map in hand, he soon finds himself part of a motley crew that sails in search of the buried treasure. However, the charismatic and villainous Long John Silver has other plans, and Jim must step up to save the ship, his friends and the treasure.
The Jungle Book is a rich and spirited collection of stories set deep in the Indian jungle. In these timeless adventures, we meet tigers and bears, snakes and mongooses, elephants and seals, and most famously Mowgli, the 'man-cub' adopted by a pack of wolves who must learn the ways of jungle life, its colorful characters and its many dangers.
Mary Lennox is spoilt and rude. After the passing of her parents she is sent to live with her uncle in the austere Misselthwaite Manor in Yorkshire. Horribly lonely she befriends a robin who helps her to find the key to a secret place that has been kept hidden for years. What she finds is a transformative and healing garden full of vigour and charm. Here she discovers new friends and unearths new depths to her character.
In this collection of beautiful and poignant tales, Oscar Wilde employs his characteristic grace and wit and reveals a softer contemplative side to his writing. Written for his two sons, the stories have an enduring appeal for children, combining, as they do, a moral message in a fantastical framework.

This book is a photographic odyssey through the lands of the First World War.
