The coronavirus has been holding us in its grip for over a year. Live events and brand experiences have either not been possible at all or only with major restrictions. The consequences and problems for the industry are enormous. However, the pandemic has also triggered positive impulses. Digital experiences have developed quickly and enable greater sustainability. They place a focus on relevance, added value and interaction. The challenges have driven dynamism and a willingness to adapt. Some teams have forged closer ties and their work has become more personal and constructive.

This special edition summarises an extreme and contrasting year. It builds a bridge between events before and since the coronavirus, between analogue, hybrid and digital events. The diversity shows what has happened in live communication during this time.

EINE POETISCHE MULTISENSORISCHE INSTALLATION INSZENIERT DEN NEXO UND SEIN BRENNSTOFFZELLENSYSTEM.

The Hyundai Motorstudio Hanam, Seoul, was reopened in spring 2020 after extensive modernisation. The new NEXO car stands at the centre of the showroom, with its driving power generated by a newly developed fuel cell system. The surrounding media installation developed by flora&faunavisions was designed to not only set the stage for the vehicle but also to take the visitors on a poetic journey that conveyed the beauty of nature from the perspective of a hydrogen molecule. With the help of a supplementary media table, guests could find more in-depth information about all the content and even younger visitors could explore the topic of hydrogen.

The energy chapter visualises energy generation, where hydrogen and oxygen come together to produce a driving force. The final chapter depicts a vision of clear air when decarbonisation is at an advanced stage.

EINE SPEKTAKULÄRE SHOW MIT EINER 7.000 QUADRATMETER GROSSEN BÜHNE – AUF UND UNTER WASSER.

For the Grand Parc du Puy du Fou, ACTLD designed a pompous and romantic show and a journey into the 19th century – resulting in the “Les Noces de Feu” (Wedding of Fire) project. It brings together water and fire, passion and music with electroluminescent costumes and an impressive setting that rises from the depths of a pond. The music and the story are interpreted and arranged by the virtuoso sisters Camille and Julie Berthollet, Warner Classics. They tell the passionate story of a female violinist and a pianist. This nocturnal dream is accompanied by 30 underwater actors and actresses on a stage of more than 7000 square metres. Huge under-

well as a pianist moving across the surface of the water with his piano. It is compounded by the fact that by day the set must remain underwater, as the site is then used for other purposes. The COVID travel restrictions presented a further challenge. A new way of working, as contactless as possible, had to be developed. 85 percent of the production was developed and realised at night from a distance. Only 15 percent could be produced on site.

Only few companies had the courage in autumn 2020 to realise a hybrid brand experience. Deutsche Telekom wanted to make a point, on the other hand, about how one could proceed in a new normality despite the coronavirus. Together with flora&faunavisions and Meiré and Meiré, they developed the Magenta Moon Campus: a mix of an interactive playground, digital classroom, digital workshop and hybrid discussion platform. The aim was to playfully communicate digital media competence – as well as to create shared moments in times of lockdown and social isolation. The free educational programme was targeted towards all generations – focusing on the themes of sustainability, media competence and digitisation. The Magenta Moon Campus opened at the end of October 2020 in Berlin and remained open for two weeks. Those interested could choose between 154 workshops, 45 online workshops, presentations, live podcasts, webinars and performances, as well as a digital discussion hour for the “Silver Society”.

A PUBLIC BRAND EXPERIENCE WITH A PLAYFUL CONVEYING OF KNOWLEDGE AMIDST THE PANDEMIC.

With the Janssen Open House, the researching pharmaceutical company Janssen-Cilag established a platform on which parties from all areas of the health sector could network and share thoughts about the future of the healthcare system. In 2020, the Janssen Open House took place already for the third time – but due to the pandemic it was purely virtual for the first time. The agencies face to face and onliveline designed a dramaturgy that brought together information, discussion and entertainment and enabled an interactive and personal experience. Because of the pandemic, neither participants nor employees were allowed to access the Janssen campus. The image of the

144

A moderator set off and explored the abandoned campus – all alone. He encountered various people who were shown on screens, captured interesting perspectives, interacted with the public and gathered ideas for improving the healthcare system. The digital public accompanied this throughout and was incorporated. The moderator asked them for feedback, encouraged reactions and integrated them actively in discussions. A variety of camera perspectives, lighting settings and film music were used to generate scenic moments and changing scenarios.

“BEST CARS 2021” was realised under the motto “Like never before! An interactive experience”, in the form of an Internet page with scrollytelling. The aim of this type of reporting is to make information not only public but an experience in front of the screen, through images, sound and intuitive interactivity – an interactive platform where users can decide themselves how the event programme should unfold. An opening garage door served as an opener. This was followed by an image film and the introduction of the chief editors, who had also opened the live event previously. Each of the eleven car categories was presented with a captivating trailer, with music and cutting adapted to the class. Apart from the awarded cars, the winners of the International Paul Pietsch Awards as
