When Belgium still owned an African colony it liked to exhibit ethnographic objects and exotic, stuffed animals such as this elephant in its Museum of the Belgian Congo. After 1960 and the independence of Congo, the museum was renamed the Royal Museum for Central Africa.

The canal tours in Amsterdam are also featured in many publications. The typical photos on the right with their jagged borders among others feature O.Z.Voorburgwal and the House on the Three Canals, Herengracht, Het Kolkje, the Magere Brug bridge over the River Amstel and Montelbaan toren, also nicknamed Malle Jaap (Silly Jaap) because its bells started to spontaneously ring at the most unexpected times of the day.

The former island community of Marken is now a peninsula in Markermeer and a submunicipality of the town of Waterland in the Province of North Holland. For over a century, the former fishing village has drawn masses of tourists because of the striking traditional dress its inhabitants wear and the characteristic wooden houses that have been built on poles or artificial hills called ‘werven’. Note the grumpy or dejected faces of the local residents.

••   Slagveldtoerisme is en blijft een

dubbelzinnige aantrekkingskracht uitoefenen.

Battlefield tourism continues to have ambiguous appeal. The city of Verdun, along the River Meuse, is inextricably linked with the bloodiest battle in the history of World War I: it lasted 300 days, from 21 February 1916 until 20 December 1916. The photo shows the ‘Monument élevé au Mort-Homme à la mémoire des Morts de la 69e division’ (Les Editions d’Art Yvon). Arromanches, a seaside resort in Normandy, was one of the many places where the American army built artificial beaches for D-Day in June 1944. The city and its museum are heavily geared towards remembrance tourism, including a ‘Circuit de Plages des Débarquement’.

The regions of Ardèche and Auvergne form the Massif Central, along with the Cevennes mountain range. This area is very popular among Dutch tourists. The spectacular Gorges du Tarn is in the Cevennes. This 500-metre-long canyon, which is wedged between two arid limestone plateaux, where the River Tarn flows, is surrounded by impressive cliffs and rocks. It is a perfect destination for recreation.

102

This spa in central France owes its popularity to the hot springs near the River Allier. In the nineteenth century, many rich tourists liked to withdraw to Vichy for a cure. As a result, the city became a premier luxury destination in the twentieth century, as you can tell from the stylish design of this postcard booklet with fioritura lettering. To the right (from left to right and top to bottom) the Casino, Rue Georges Clémenceau, Source Chomel spring and La Nouvelle Poste.

In 1630, the rich count Carlo III Borromeo acquired Isola Bella. He named it after his wife, Isabella d’Adda. Later the name was contracted to Isola Bella. Carlo III built a Baroque palazzo there. You could reach the garden with its ten terraces by walking through caves with pebble mosaics.

Any self-respecting Renaissance lover stops in Florence at one time or another. As a result, the city is almost suffocated by the large numbers of tourists. Dante’s house at the top left. The brochures are by Edizioni Innocenti, Edizione Ugo Mugnaini and Edizione Artistiche ‘IRIS’ in Florence.
