With his screechy voice, Mr. Roger exclaims, “Kraaaa! For a thousand guns!” and flies off into the forest. Mark and Fatima chase him. Suddenly the bird stops and pulls out another page of the diary from the hollow of a tree. “WE LOOTED THE SHIP, BUT A NAVY VESSEL SAW US. WE ENGAGED IN A VERY VIOLENT BATTLE WITH CANNONS. TRY TO RECREATE IT! ”

below are the nine Maneuvers of the ships during the battle and the range of their respeCtive Cannons. how Many hits were suCCessful?
Cut out the ruler at the end of the book and use it to CalCulate if the ships are Close enough to hit eaCh other. to start, point the ruler at nuMber 1 of the navy vessel. using the range of its Cannon as a Measure, find out if the shot is able to reaCh the pirate ship, also plaCed at point 1. now it ’ s pinkbeard’s turn. starting froM point 2 of the pirate ship, CalCulate if the shot will reaCh the navy vessel, whiCh in the MeantiMe has also Moved to point 2...and so on!

“AFTER A SERIES OF TACKS, THE NAVY HAS APPROACHED US. WE HAVE TO MOVE THE CANNON, BUT WE ARE LIMITED IN OUR MOVEMENTS. WE CAN MOVE IT AS MANY TIMES AS WE WANT, BUT ONLY BY TWO ANGLES: TO THE RIGHT BY 135° OR TO THE LEFT BY 180°. HELP ME TO AIM AT THE OLD VESSEL-SINKER! ”

in whiCh sequenCe did pinkbeard and his Crew Move the Cannon to aiM it at the eneMy ship? reMeMber: they Could only Move it by two angles: to the right by 135° or to the left by 180°.

“HAVE YOU FIXED THE LEAK? NOW IT’S THE SAILS’ TURN. LET’S SEE IF YOU CAN DO IT. YOU HAVE TO USE PIECES OF FABRIC IN THE SHAPE OF A SQUARE AND OF AN EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE. YOU NEED TO CALCULATE THE SIZES OF THE SQUARES AND OF THE TRIANGLES, KNOWING THAT THE AREA OF OUR TEAR IS 111 SQUARE INCHES.” whiCh pieCes need to be used?

“We have fixed the sail!” Fatima screams in excitement. “Look here,” Mark says grimly. “There is another note, on the back of the plans...”

“JUNE 25, 1625. WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGH ROPE. WE GO INTO THE FOREST TO FETCH SOME VINES. BUT WHAT LENGTH DO WE NEED? TO FIND OUT, YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT, IN THE DRAWING, THAT VILLAIN OF A BOATSWAIN HAS PUT THE HEIGHTS OF THE MASTS IN DIFFERENT UNITS OF MEASUREMENT. EACH MAST NEEDS ONLY ONE ROPE. HOW MUCH ROPE WILL BE NEEDED IN TOTAL?”
“Mark, we have to convert everything and tell the number to the parrot,” says Fatima. While she is speaking, an incandescent lapillus falls within an inch of them!
how MuCh rope will be needed for the three Masts of the ship?
we need____. 31 feet

Mark and Fatima take cover just in time. BOOOM!
The explosion covers them in a blanket of dust. When it thins out, they see a multitude of skeletons in front of them. They must be the pirates who also fell into Pinkbeard’s explosive trap! But the worst is yet to come.
From an opening in the ceiling, they can see the incandescent red lava beginning to fall in. “The volcano is active!” Mark shouts. “Fatima, by any chance, does Pinkbeard say if there is another exit?” he pleads.
Fortunately, on the back of the page, there is a map of the volcano caves.
Now the children have to hurry. The lava will reach them soon! However, the exit is blocked by some very heavy crates, certainly another one of the pirate’s traps.
They must be blown up, quickly! There are three gunpowder trails to trigger, each marked with a number. Only one is the right one. Mr. Roger croaks a suggestion: “The perimeter, the perimeter.”

CalCulate the periMeter of the Crates and find the right trail to turn on. the side of eaCh Crate is 1 foot.
“Dear Pinkbeard, we are tremendously smart and we will leave this island,” Fatima says firmly, while Mark continues reading:
“I BLOCKED THE DOOR. TO ENTER, THERE IS A HATCH HIDDEN UNDER A STACK OF TIED CRATES. THERE ARE THREE OF THEM. AT THE SLIGHTEST TOUCH, TWO WILL EXPLODE. THE CORRECT PILE IS THE ONE THAT, WHEN THROWN INTO THE SEA, WILL NOT SINK.”
Fatima looks at the crates. Above each pile, the total weight is indicated. 9 lbs

whiCh of the three piles of Crates weighs less than water? reMeMber: a bloCk of water the size of a Crate would weigh 1 lb, and the Crates sink when they weigh More than water!
Mark carefully moves the non-explosive crates aside, finds the hatch, and gets inside, followed by Fatima.
They are immediately faced with another test. There is a door with black and white dots painted on it. There are three handles, each identified by a number, and an inscription that reads:
“FIND ALL THE RECTANGLES AND THE SQUARES THAT HAVE BLACK DOTS AS THEIR VERTICES, COUNT THEM, AND PULL THE CORRESPONDING LEVER.”

Count the squares and the reCtangles that have blaCk dots as their vertiCes. the CorreCt lever is the one Marked with the saMe nuMber.

Mark picks up the map. Fatima grabs Pinkbeard’s buckle and some coins. The two children smile, but Fatima’s smile quickly fades away. “T-t-t-t-turn around and l-l-l-l-look out!”
From the porthole, Mark sees the incandescent lava pouring down along the cove walls, causing the sea water to boil.
“We have to leave as soon as possible if we don’t want to turn into boiled fish,” says Fatima.
“Straight to the figurehead!” shouts Mark.
When they arrive at the bow, they observe the figurehead again: a pirate with a long beard who seems to be missing a few pieces. Fatima immediately takes out the memorabilia: the hook, the hat, the sword, and the buckle.

She places them on the figurehead. When the last one is in place, the pirate’s mouth opens wide. Inside is a shiny object that has been kept hidden for 400 years: a compass.
“Take it and let’s run away,” says Mark, running.
As soon as they get into the lifeboat, they notice something just below the surface of the water: a small sunken boat. Inside is a skeleton dressed as a pirate, with a long and unmistakable pink beard, embracing a large chest full of coins and jewels.
“Poor Pinkbeard. He wanted to hold on to his treasure, so he didn’t manage to escape,” Fatima murmurs.
The two children start rowing as hard as they can. Just in time!
The sea begins to boil, and the volcano shoots lava in every direction.
The lifeboat advances amidst steam and roaring. As soon as they come out of the narrow cove, Fatima checks the map. On the back are the coordinates to locate the right route. With the help of the compass, the children find the direction to follow. The volcano is now farther and farther away. A light mist begins to envelop them. As the relict masts reappear, Mr. Roger, who had escorted them there, squawks with satisfaction—“Kraaaa!”—and returns to his mysterious island. The children call out, “Goodbye, Mr. Roger, and thanks for everything!”
