Schön! comes to life through late-evening meetings, early-morning brainstorms and middle-of-the-night emails with bright ideas; working with fantastic teams of photographers, stylists, creatives and journalists, we’ve always been spurred on by the need to scout, nurture, reveal and celebrate talents. Our dose of fun has been in portraying them in ways they had never been seen before, translating their message and spreading the story behind their work. We believe in the arts as a motor behind change, just as actor and producer Theo Rossi tells us in the pages of this book: “The power of entertainment is that when it’s good it can shift your perspective. It can bring out every emotion we are capable of and, most of the time, joy.”

Scottish actor, director, singer, writer and activist Alan Cumming first made a lasting impression with his role in the 1998 revival of the legendary Cabaret, for which he won a Tony Award.

The actor’s brilliant, energetic performances aren’t, however, limited to Broadway.

Switching between TV and film roles, Cumming has starred in Bond films, Spice World, Eyes Wide Shut, and series such as The Runaway, Prodigal Sun and The Good Wife, a role for which he was nominated for two Emmys, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and a Satellite Award.

He has taken on difficult roles in productions large and small throughout his career: a drag-performing gay father in indie film Any Day Now, the mercurial god of wine in the National Theatre of Scotland’s The Bacchae and even Adolf Hitler in the satirical Jackboots on Whitehall. “I would sort of like to be thought of as a provocateur,” says Cumming of his aspirations as an actor, “to challenge people’s inertia about the world.”

Naturally, in the course of a career, not every role marks a revelation. “You can choose to do certain things which register with you, but then often you must do things to earn money,” he explains. “In major films you can feel like a puppet or a whore, but you know, those films are commerce.” He jokes that without these he could not support his “lavish lifestyle”, which he shares with husband Grant, an illustrator, and their two dogs. What makes Cumming unique is that even in these commercial undertakings, which he distinguishes from those that are “very pertinent” to him, he is quick to see the silver lining: “It might be a terrible project, but you make friends that you keep in contact with, or you get paid big and buy something nice.”

Their parents were, in fact, both athletes. “They thought that maybe Dakota and I would play tennis, be sporty,” Fanning explains, but the girls had other plans. “We would put on these elaborate, imaginative costumes and be characters. We would play, but we were basically acting with no camera. My mom saw us doing that and she was like, ‘Well, I guess that’s what they want to do... ’” Having caught the acting bug at a play camp at age five, Dakota was soon appearing in commercials and films, resulting in a permanent move to LA for the whole family. “My mom and dad, it kind of turned their worlds upside down,” says Fanning, “because we lived in a small town in Georgia and had our lives and that was it.” Elle was cast as the younger version of her sister in I Am Sam and subsequent films, before starring in her own roles.

She was only nine when she landed the lead in Phoebe in Wonderland, portraying a girl with Tourette’s syndrome, and realised that acting would become her career. “I was actually playing someone where I had to do the research,” she recalls. “I had to meet kids who had Tourette’s syndrome. I’d never had that responsibility before and I was good with that responsibility. It didn’t scare me at all.”

Her ability to connect has millions of fans streaming her music, including idols like Rihanna and Alicia Keys. In 2019, she scored five Grammy nominations, winning Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Album.

Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, H.E.R. grew up in a Filipino and African American household where music was a family affair.

“Everything was playing at my house,” she recalls.

“I recently found out my grandmother played a lot of instruments. She didn’t like to show off and she had arthritis, so I never knew.” Artistry is just as important to H.E.R. as her vocals. She plays bass, drums, guitar and piano and wants to learn the harp. Her love for sound goes deep and wide, from Country to Pop and Rock.

H.E.R. took her first steps in the music industry when her father posted videos of her singing and playing instruments on YouTube, when she was still a kid. “I got a million views,” she recalls.

“Instantly, it went viral.” With talent beyond her years, it was only a matter of time before the record labels came calling. “I got signed to RCA records when I was 14, so I’ve been around for a really long time.” Her popularity soared when she released her debut E.P., H.E.R Vol 1., in 2016. She believes her music translated so well because she’s open to vulnerability. “It’s always my inner thoughts that resonate the most with people,” she states. “It’s always the music that’s written with things I’m afraid to say.”

Mitte’s foray into Hollywood was never in search of fame or fortune. “I originally moved to Los Angeles because of my little sister,” he says. “If you move to LA and you don’t go to school, don’t join a gang or don’t act, you’re not going to meet anyone or do anything. So I started acting and doing classes to meet kids my own age. About six months later I auditioned for Breaking Bad.” Five auditions and a flight to New Mexico later, “and the rest is history.”

After his breakthrough role in Breaking Bad, Mitte’s career has continued to thrive.
