Introduction The idea for this book started three years ago when Marta Hallett walked into my booth at a trade show in New York City. Marta liked my work, and we immediately started sharing dog stories. She talked about her dog Belle, a basset hound, and asked if I would be interested in publishing a book of my art. This book is about my dog drawings. From the first artwork produced in 1986 to the current images that appear in this book, I’ve included finished drawings, sketches, and dogs in different contexts and for different applications. I also created new art by manipulating and deconstructing earlier work for the fun of it. The biggest challenge was selecting which images to include in the book and knowing when to stop creating new ones. This forced me to put my work into perspective and now changes the way I see my art both from the past and in the future. My work has always been about simplification and creating an image that can be understood when seen from across the street. The process begins with a detailed drawing that allows me to establish what I’m looking at and to identify the important elements. With these elements I build the image, very much like a puzzle, until it looks right. All the shapes are closed, and the black line unifies and separates the shapes and colors. Although I’m aware that most of my images have been created for product applications, what I hope people can see in my art in this book is the universal appeal of dogs and how if you’re lucky, a dog will bring out your humanity.
