OVERLEAF: Slight variations in materials and detailing individuate interior spaces, while achieving an overall harmony.
RIGHT: A balcony lines the master bedroom, which commands a stunning view of Long Island Sound to the south.
PREVIOUS PAGE: An expansion of the house coincided with its modernization, and this new construction includes a family room whose exposed structure and wood interior cladding lend warmth and coziness to the soaring volume. RIGHT: A wood-beamed natatorium is located on the east side of the house, at grade. Its roof serves as a deck for the main floor’s common rooms.

The house plan is segmented into three volumes, and unique, round spaces occupy the pivot points between wings; (pages 92–3) the foyer emphasizes wayfinding, by permitting broad views of the living and dining areas, and a glimpse to the west wing. RIGHT: The sunroom has a tent-like quality.
The interior expression of massive granite and timber differentiates the project from Castle in the Clouds, whose rooms are finished more delicately. OVERLEAF: A firepit and multiple seating areas encourage guests to enjoy outdoor living on the 9-acre (3.65-hectare) lakefront property.

RIGHT: The 3,600-squarefoot (335-square-meter) library includes spaces for study and reflection, in addition to the collection of 38,000 books. The placement of each book was scrupulously mapped before fabrication of the shelving commenced.
PREVIOUS PAGE: An auxiliary entrance on the house’s west elevation opens to the breakfast room. RIGHT: The family room occupies one of two wings that extend north of the living room. This design strategy gives the north side of the house a U-shaped plan, which creates a stronger sense of enclosure around the pool.
