PREFACE This new book presents seventeen recent projects by renowned (interior) architects and designers from around the world. We start with a duplex penthouse in Antwerp, which the architect Hans Verstuyft calls an “Urban Villa”. Norm Architects restored a historic villa in Copenhagen, which is said to have belonged to Poul Henningsen at one time. The Australian Redgen Mathieson design studio designed a three-level residence on the slopes of Sydney’s Balmoral Beach. The Belgian interior architect Renaud De Poorter created the interior of a country residence (designed by the architect Anje Dhondt), combining contemporary accents with exclusive custom work. Francesc Rifé Studio in Spain was in charge of the design of a top-floor apartment in a classic building in Seville. Geert Ostyn, the CEO of Obumex, opens the doors to his private home in Knokke, which was recently redecorated. The SAAI interior design firm created a real home that is tailored to its cosmopolitan client’s demanding lifestyle. The interior architect Arjaan De Feyter presents an urban loft in Antwerp’s Eilandje neighbourhood. Atelier 10-8 designed the interior of an apartment in Nieuw Zuid, also in Antwerp. CJH Studio restored a centuries-old building, transforming it into an inviting home in Melbourne (Australia). Bieke Casteleyn (BCINT) created a new interior for an apartment at the Belgian seaside. The Italian designer Elena Pancaldi created a residence, which showcases her knack for “poetic minimalism”. Dorothee Junkin Design Studio won the American Architecture Prize 2017 with a pied-à-terre in Lower Manhattan, which is featured in the next report. The Belgian interior and architecture firm Tjip takes us on a tour of a new project in the historic city centre, while the young interior architect Britt Thomas presents a new project. Fiona Lynch renovated an old boot factory in Fitzroy (Australia), transforming it into a magnificent home. And finally, B.E. Architecture designed a sleek, contemporary granite home, also in Australia, albeit in Armadale.

An office building from the late Sixties was renovated, the two upper storeys were transformed into a duplex penthouse. The result is a generously-proportioned “Urban Villa”, around a large patio garden, with an astonishing sense of space and openness. You can see the patio garden from every room thanks to the diagonal vistas around the 35-year old “Parrotia Persica”. This organisation also creates a sense of privacy in the owner’s home office, which is also in this unit. The inner garden connects and shapes the surrounding spaces, including the library, the large kitchen/dining room, the TV room or the bedrooms. The fireplaces in the library and kitchen make you feel even more at home. The office building block is but a distant memory. Unique vistas create a film-like effect and give you a sense of the city around you. Every moment is special. The bustling city life, the unique cloud formations or the sunset offer a never-ending series of new experience but also provide a sense of calm after a busy working day. A small swimming pool with a counter current unit was built on the rooftop, facing the cathedral with a sweeping view of the city’s skyline.
Elk moment is bijzonder. Hier zwemt men richting kathedraal en overschouwt men de skyline.

Norm Architects have restored and rebuilt a historic villa in Copenhagen after a devastating fire. The villa, located in Copenhagen, is said to have been the home of the famous Danish design-icon, Poul Henningsen. Today, a family of three resides in the historic house – a modern home that holds references to its original state – with beautiful high panels, parquet flooring, low, paned windows, teak furniture and retro PH lamps hanging over the kitchen island. Unfortunately not much of the original building was left after the fire in 2014, but while rebuilding the house it was possible, by increasing the height of the facades, to extend the top floor from approximately 40m2 to 100m2, which has made the house more suitable as a modern family home. With a clean and minimal approach, the classic elements of the house have been restored and elegantly combined with contemporary details, making for timeless interiors and generally warm aesthetics. The dark mid-century teak furniture and minimal marble plinths create beautiful contrasts, boasting a clean and subtle elegance against the plain, white walls and dark inbuilt kitchen elements in sawcut smoaked oak. With light coming in from different angles, every room of the house is bright, filled with daylight and comfortable to be in. The ground floor of the house has been changed from small divided rooms into one big living area with windows on all sides, only subdivided centrally by bespoke elements; a large kitchen cabinet covered in dark stained oak separating the kitchen and the living room, and a central staircase, creating a dynamic, semi-open space with soft transitions. The floating steps in solid oak create a flow between the basement, ground floor and top floor, connecting the house vertically in a harmonious and contemporary way with skylights flooding the staircase in natural daylight and increasing the sense of height in the house. The minimal kitchen in smoked oak with bronzed brass handles, designed by Norm Architects for Danish kitchen manufacturer Reform is complimented by a sculptural kitchen island in a light grey ceramic stone.

The renovation of this 100-square metre apartment along the seafront started from the standard layout, with a separate kitchen and living area. The interior architect Bieke Casteleyn (Design studio BCINT) chose to increase the sense of space, by combining both spaces and eliminating the partition. This resulted in a rectangular volume, with a walnut kitchen island and a dining table and bench, extending the kitchen into the dining area. The sense of space and homely ambience were enhanced with low cabinets along the wall in light colours and a shelf above it. The ice-blue shades of the chairs and the cement-bound granular floor pair nicely with the warm shades of camel and brown of the travertine worktop. The oblong black and white mosaic in the bathroom, the door knobs and the exclusive mud plaster on the walls enhance the subtle yet noticeable retro look and feel of this apartment.
