AUTUMN

FOR

Dear Friends of Callwey, Founded in Munich in 1884, Callwey has spent more than 140 years publishing at the intersection of culture, craft and everyday pleasure meet: architecture and interiors, gardens and landscapes, food and travel, design and the work of the hand. The subjects have shifted with the times; the standard has not. We choose our authors with care, commission photography of real quality, and give every title the binding, paper and weight the subject asks for. Our list is shaped in Germany by a small team working with curatorial discipline. We publish only what we believe deserves a place on the shelf, and we give it the depth and craftsmanship to earn it. From the great gardens of Europe to the kitchens of New York, from contemporary architecture to the quiet of an alpine retreat, our books ask the reader to slow down and look closely. In demanding times, the case for the beautiful, the considered and the well-made grows stronger rather than weaker. Such books are not a luxury at the edges of the day – they are part of how we keep our bearings, remember what we love, and decide what to pass on. The pages that follow set out our current program. We are glad to share it with an international readership. Warm regards, Dr. Marcella Prior-Callwey Publisher

A CLASSIC OF THE SCENE (France)

The Festival des Templiers is one of the most traditional trail running events in Europe. Since it started in 1995, it has drawn thousands of runners every year to the Millau region in southern France. The landscape is full of spectacular limestone formations, deep gorges, and historic trails in a terrain that’s thrilled trail runners for decades. Like Transvulcania, the Festival des Templiers is an independent race and keeps its distance from any race series.

ational runners the chance to be part of the festival. For many, Les Templiers is the epitome of French trail running culture: a down-to-earth, family atmosphere that is also extremely professionally organized. No flamboyant show, no flashy sponsors’ banners—only gen-

uine excitement and a deep sense of community. Entrants here can feel that trail running in France is more than a sport—it’s a way of life. Tip: The fruit loaf at the aid stations is absolutely delicious!

With a main course of 80 kilometers (50 miles) and about 3,700 meters of elevation (12,000 feet), the festival is a true adventure. The Grand Trail des Templiers is the heart of the event and always attracts a very strong field, with around 2,300 competitors. But the second half of the race is where things get tough. The course goes over the Causse Noir plateau and features steep, challenging climbs, but also plentiful spectacular scenery and warm-hearted volunteers along the way. The race organizers reward the top ten finishers of the 80-kilometer course (50 miles) with fair prize money, and present the winners with a laurel wreath, the ancient symbol of victory and honor. As special features, there are numerous secondary races of different distances, giving everyone from pros to recre-

THE WORLD OF

GOLF

ABOUT PLACES, ARCHITECTURE, AND THE LOGIC OF THE GAME

EDITOR The texts in this book are created together with experienced golf pros and true experts of the game. Their contributions are based on personal experience, strategic know-how, and a deep understanding of courses, gameplay, and decision-making. In short, punchy sections, they share their views on places, situations, and questions you can only really get on the course.

THIS BOOK APPROACHES GOLF NOT AS A COMPETITION, but as a cultural p henomenon. At its centre are the places, spaces and structures that define the game: landscapes with a character of their own, courses with their own architectural logic, and r ituals shaped over decades. It is a book for everyone who wants not to learn golf, but to understand it. In carefully curated chapters, the volume leads from the origins of the game—at the St Andrews Old Course, Prestwick or Royal Dornoch—to iconic courses such as A ugusta National and Pinehurst No. 2, and on to the connoisseurs’ lesser-known favorites. The perspectives of professional players are complemented by insights into golf travel and places where the game can be experienced in a particular way, alongside chapters on etiquette and the unwritten rules that have shaped golf from the start.

UNIQUE • Around 200 photos of extraordinary golf courses, landscapes, and details from all over the world • Golf as a mix of landscape, architecture, time, and decision-making • An in-depth photo essay book – stories about the game’s concept, course design, travel, style, and etiquette FEATURES • Title embossing, UV coating

Heated, open all year, with a view of Winterstaude mountain. Swim a few laps in the morning while the mist rises from the meadows to fully absorb the atmosphere of this place.

The Fuchsegg Lodge is a relatively new mountain hideaway that fits as perfectly into the gentle hills of the Bregenzerwald as if it had been there for generations.

"We often used to travel with a sheaf of to-do lists in our bags—until we came here. Now we know this is a place where we rediscover having a good time, pure and simple." Morning runs over snow or through alpine meadows, swimming, reading, playing games: At Fuchsegg Lodge, the options for spending time together are as varied as the freedom offered by its location in the Schetteregg region. The drive there prepares new visitors for this slower, more tranquil pace, and arrival feels like entering a perfect world. Two sliding doors open silently to reveal the guesthouse. At the reception, tucked away in a corner, soft sofas offer an inviting spot to warm up by the fire. The fireplace tiles were created in Japanese Raku firing by the Vorarlberg-based manufacturer KARAK. Host Carmen Can explains the color choices as a nod to her childhood. "I brought Sebastian some blueberries that were blue on the outside and reddish inside. He used those colors as inspiration for firing the tiles." The atmosphere of the lodge is dominated by handcrafted details and materials. "Our priority was to ensure guests feel they're in the Bregenzerwald." Carmen and her father Heinz Hämmerle made their dream home come true—a mountain hideaway at the end of the valley, at an altitude of 1,060 meters. For them, it was never about the "whys," but only the "wherefores." This was the family's vacation refuge, where three generations spent their summers and winters. "I've always regarded it as a place of power." Now she aims to share that feeling. The lodge opened in 2020, after 19 months of construction. The exterior of the ensemble is surprisingly rural and agricultural in character. The understated buildings nestle in rolling meadows with views over the Winterstaude. It resembles a 'Vorsäss,' that mid-point of the three-step Alpine transhumance farming practice that is now on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage register. Architects Ludescher+Lutz and the owners spent a year analyzing the area from above: How long, how wide can the buildings be to

ensure they look natural and do not impact the landscape? The result comprises six different wooden buildings, scattered across the meadow as in a "Vorsäss": guesthouse, sauna, the Flux chalets, the Wälderhaus, Haus Drei, and the Tenn—30 rooms and suites altogether. "Guests naturally move around. That's how the architecture is designed." Swimmers brave the weather. Floating in the heated outdoor pool with its mountain panorama "is simply unbeatable." The whole concept is based on balancing time together with seclusion. A long maple table in the guesthouse entrance is an icon of community that spans the generations. "We were aiming for a place where people and perspectives come together." The cuisine is regionally inspired, with cheese from the alpine pastures and homemade bread. Every Thursday is a feast of cheese spätzle noodles, applesauce, and Sig, or 'forest chocolate'—a sweet, fudgy local specialty made from whey. Colorful armchairs, an open fire, and a book-lined gallery await guests upstairs. Carmen is especially delighted to see guests playing games here and children taking up books again. "Aesthetics are so important in the Bregenzerwald. Good design reaches out to young and old and boosts everyone's wellbeing." Virtually all the work was carried out with local craftspeople, many from the association Werkraum Bregenzerwald. "The house gained its soul from their craftsmanship." The design ethic permeates the rooms, in silver fir, clay-casein floors, felted wool loden fabric, and stone. The solid wood beds are famously comfortable, piled with seven-herb pillows. Blue felt walls pick up the blueberry theme. Here, sustainability is a way of life, with solar panels, district heating, and eco-friendly floors. The wildflower meadow was painstakingly restored. The lodge has garnered awards, including the 2022 Best Architect Award Austria, Big See Award, and an honorable mention at the 2025 Baukulturpreis architecture awards. But the guests
