235 rare watches from the history of watchmaking

Two lavish books for collectors and lovers of luxury watches

Take home your own version of the Temple to Watchmaking

Innovation, exclusivity, and elegance define Patek Philippe, a family-owned company with a single and passionate calling: to perfect the watch. These lavishly illustrated books present some of the most important timepieces from the more than 3,000 watches exhibited at the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. These precious timepieces have been passionately assembled over more than 40 years by Philippe Stern, Honorary President of the company, and include some of the most valuable pieces in watchmaking history. The books allow you to take the Patek Philippe Museum s exhibition home with you, or, alternatively, to get a preview of its treasures before you visit.

From the collection of historic watches featuring the first portable timepieces dating back to the 16th century to innovative milestones in Patek Philippe s portfolio since its founding in 1839, each watch is reproduced with such beauty and precision that you can almost hear it ticking. With expert curatorial insight and context from Peter Friess, Conservateur of the Patek Philippe Museum, these intricate mechanisms are not only presented for themselves; they also offer a unique perspective into the cultural history of the last 500 years. True to the trust and excellence of the Patek Philippe brand, the presentation, the extraordinary book design by Birgit Binner, and content of these sumptuous publications meet the highest professional standards. They are the perfect books for the perfect watch.

In directing and curating the Patek Philippe Museum, Peter Friess, a master watchmaker, patented inventor, educator, and art historian, found his dream job, which, he says, put me into direct contact with the world s most creative watchmakers and skilled craftsmen of all kinds. For me, Patek Philippe is not only a manufacturer of watches, but a protector of world heritage, keeping alive crafts like enamel painting, which would not have survived without the company s efforts to preserve them.

A fantastic reference work for the novice or the seasoned watch enthusiast

Fully illustrated with 470 colour photographs

Brand-Agnostic. Features a vast array of timepieces from over 90 manufacturers

“…a beautiful book, filled with captivating images and explanatory text which never gets too dry or too technical…” Revolution Despite the functional obsolescence of the mechanical wristwatch (our phones and computers tell more accurate time) the early 21st Century has seen a boom in the development, production, and appreciation of all things horological. Whether it is presented to the collector as an alternative investment, as a feat of micro-mechanical technology, or as a showcase of artisanal mastery, the mechanical wristwatch has never possessed more forms, functions or facets than it does today. The Wristwatch Handbook is written from the epicentre of a renaissance, a place in time between the Quartz revolution and the rise of the smart device where the mechanical wristwatch is the antidote to the microprocessor and the permanent buzz of your inbox. From the multi-axis tourbillion, to the split-second chronograph, to the sidereal sky chart, The Wristwatch Handbook covers it all and does so with more than 470 rich illustrations from over 90 of the World s leading brands. The book is separated into two sections. The first section provides the reader with a comprehensive understanding of the mechanical movement. Its chapters explore power, transmission, distribution and regulation illustrating the basic concepts before considering the innovation and complexity that takes place further toward the cutting edge. From the fifty-day power reserve, to the constant force mechanism, and the 1,000Hz mechanical escapement, section 1 will allow the reader to understand and appreciate what is happening beneath the dial of their watch. Section two allows the reader to take this understanding and apply it to the vast range of complications (functions) that exist in modern horology. Each chapter showcases a distinct category of complication. For example, the regatta timer, pulsometer, and monopusher chronograph join a host of others in a chapter entitled Recording Lapses of Time ; The power reserve indicator, dynamograph, and crown position indicator are featured in a chapter for Power and Performance Indication ; The moon phase indicator, annual calendar, and planetarium can be found in the Astronomical Complications chapter. Once the functional categories are exhausted, the final three chapters explore whimsical complications that have little regard for practical function, novelty time indication, and the super-complicated watch a rare breed of timepiece that houses an intimidating host of complications featured throughout the book. Upon completion of The Wristwatch Handbook the reader will be able to identify even the most exotic complication from across the room, and be able to share their appreciation and understanding of what makes it so useful and compelling. The Wristwatch Handbook is brand agnostic , using only those watches that most aptly illustrate the given subject-matter. As a consequence the book places equal emphasis on the classic and the cutting edge, on watches produced in large volume or exclusive runs, by industry-leading technology or at the hand of a master. In doing so the book provides an unparalleled range of watches from over 90 brands, allowing the reader to determine for themselves which brands, complications, and styles they will build their collection from.

The Watch Book

£69.95

The next volume in the successful Watch Book series by bestselling author Gisbert L. Brunner

The first coffee table book dedicated to the Swiss manufacturer Oris, makers of innovative mechanical watches for close to 120 years

An amazing look behind the curtain at the Swiss watch industry and its history, shaped by contrasts

In this new volume of the Watch Book series, successful author Gisbert L. Brunner focuses on Swiss watch history and the watch industry, and in particular on the house of Oris, because what could be a more fitting connection than that of the leading expert when it comes to mechanical timepieces with the watch manufactory that is one of the few to produce exclusively mechanical watches. Founded in 1904, the company stands out in many ways in the luxury world of horology, it is run independently and not by a large corporation, it is valued as a down-to-earth brand and in an industry that is not necessarily known for this it focuses on sustainability, true to the motto: Things have to make sense .

Of course, technology should not be missing from this volume; after all, Oris has developed 280 different calibres in its company history and manufactured them in its own factories. Companions have their say and the best watch models of the company s almost 120-year history are presented in this usual high-quality volume.

Born in 1947, Gisbert L. Brunner has been working with precision timepieces of all kinds, especially wristwatches, since the 1960s. During the quartz crisis of the 1970s, his love for the seemingly vanishing mechanical timepieces grew even stronger. His ardent enthusiasm for collecting inspired him to publish his first articles in the early 1980s. Gisbert L. Brunner has published more than 15 books on this subject to date, and he is in demand as a speaker all over the world.

The book covers the details and technical wonders of 60 wristwatch models that went down in history for their innovation in shapes, materials, and production methods

A style icon is linked to each decade the book covers, with the decade s preferred and most famous model decade after decade, the reader will become immersed in the world of watches from the early years of the 20th century, to the various technical innovations that revolutionised the creation of watches, up to the most modern yet already iconic models

Time is a great mystery. A changeable element, which expands or vanishes, but that appears concrete as it is marked by the passing of seconds, minutes, hours, days, and years. The path toward the capture of minutes and seconds coincided with the phases of scientific evolution that allowed man to manufacture watches that are increasingly reliable, but that are also in tune with changes in customs, social needs, and aesthetic canons.

This book covers the art of watch manufactory as well as 60 great models, covering both their technical evolution and style trends. In each chapter in-depth studies will guide the reader to the history of the most important manufacturers, the personalities linked to the models treated, technical innovations, styles of the period, or records achieved by the wristwatches: from the watch that helped Charles Lindbergh during the first transatlantic solo flight, to the one worn by Sir Edmund Hillary on the top of Mount Everest, the most iconic models will be discussed in detail.

Mara Cappelletti is a journalist and author of several titles about watches, jewellery, and ethnic jewel traditions. She s a professor of a laboratory at the University of Milan, teaching the history of jewellery, and she is the president of the association Stile e Storia (Style and History) focused on the valuation of historic treasures.

Watch Stories Collection

£39.95

This second book in the Watch Stories series, dedicated to the history of emblematic timepieces, traces its heroic and unique destiny from its creation to the current models

Also available is volume 1 in the series, The Moonwatch Story, ISBN 9782940506415

Navitimer. A mysterious name at first glance. It is in fact a contraction of two words, which correspond to the two major functions of a revolutionary watch: NAVIgation and TIMER. A chronograph designed for airborne navigation. But much more than that, an exceptional destiny, shaped by extraordinary and visionary actors. From the very beginning of its existence, in 1884, Breitling specialised in time measurement, namely the design of timers and chronographs. It was in the 1930s that the foundations of a close relationship with the world of aviation and aeronautics were laid, under the aegis of Willy Breitling. These ties have remained unbroken ever since. In 1952, in collaboration with the AOPA, the largest aeronautical association of the time, Breitling launched the development of the Navitimer, which offered what no other watch manufacturer had ever proposed: a chronograph combined with a slide rule for aircraft pilots. The Navitimer was available only to AOPA members in 1954, and then marketed to the general public in 1955. For 70 years now, the Navitimer has enjoyed glory, flown into space and weathered crises, integrating numerous evolutions without ever losing its original DNA. It has appealed to several generations of professionals, celebrities and lovers of exceptional watches, undoubtedly earning its status as an icon of watchmaking history.

This second book in the Watch Stories series, dedicated to the history of emblematic timepieces, traces its heroic and unique destiny from its creation to the current models.

Anthony Marquié is a French national and a trained aeronautical engineer. He swiftly turned to an international career in finance and investments. He has always been a collector of both modern and vintage watches, including many icons from the Omega production. Today he spends a lot of his time looking for rare examples, as well as studying the market for prestigious watches and collector's pieces. Grégoire Rossier is a Swiss biologist specialising in bioinformatics. He became a watch enthusiast at the age of 13 when he inherited his first Omega Seamaster, but it was only much later that he started serious research on the Moonwatch. Applying his experience as a researcher, he developed a systematic database of thousands of entries referencing all his observations as well as the market trends for several versions of the Speedmaster.

A new edition of this bestseller, updated and expanded to include the latest Omega model

One small step for a man, a giant leap for mankind and an extraordinary destiny for the watch that accompanied Man s first steps on the Moon, thereby becoming the greatest icon in watchmaking history: the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch .

Introduced to the public by Omega in 1957, the Speedmaster was designed for mainly sporting purposes, such as in motor racing. However, its fate took a completely different turn in the early 1960s. Astronauts going to space, some of whom wore a Speedmaster for private use, wanted to be officially equipped with a reliable, accurate and resistant watch. For this reason, NASA undertook a series of rigorous tests in extreme conditions in 1964 to select the best chronograph to accompany them on their space missions. The Omega Speedmaster won these tests and was officially certified ( Flight Qualified for All Manned Space Missions ) by NASA on March 1, 1965 for the Gemini project. It was in July 1969 that it truly made history, serving the astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission (Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins) for man s first steps on the Moon.

This book retraces an extraordinary epic and the evolution of a unique and timeless watch which, from its beginnings in 1957 through to the current models, has remained endlessly fascinating. Updated and expanded to include the latest Omega models.

Daytona

£150.00

In 2023 the Daytona 500 celebrates its 60th anniversary

The Daytona is the most popular Rolex model

Paul Newman's Rolex sold at auction for $17.8 million

Foreword by Phillips Fine Watches senior consultant Aurel Bacs

Cosmograph Daytona a legendary name among watch aficionados, is one that conjures up montages of speed, engines and sound, but is also a symbol of prestige and admiration. The origin of the myth is linked to a city in Florida, Daytona Beach, famous for its motorcycle and automobile races on the beach. In 1959, the Daytona 500 race was born and three years later, Rolex became the official timekeeper of the Daytona International Speedway hence, the start of the story of the legendary Cosmograph Daytona . The chronograph complication and the history of Rolex have always been inextricably linked. Rolex s first foray into measuring time began in the 1930s with the manufacture s very first Oyster chronograph model. In 1963, Rolex launched the Cosmograph Daytona, a sports chronograph that has never stopped evolving in respect to the spirit of the brand, and which has always strived to improve existing technology by pushing the boundaries of what is technically possible. The history and diversity of this chronograph is such that two (independent) volumes have been devoted to it. This second volume is dedicated to self-winding Daytonas, manufactured after 1988. It is a celebration of its illustrious history, which has been forged by many people, but if we had to choose one person in particular, it would be Paul Newman.

Anthony Marquié and Grégoire Rossier are the authors of the Only and Story collections of reference books about the most iconic watches. Both have scientific backgrounds: Anthony trained as an aeronautical engineer although he soon turned to an international career in finance and Grégoire has a PhD in biology with a specialisation in bioinformatics. Passionate about watches and collectors watches, they have dedicated a significant part of their activities to this sector for many years, until they created the consulting company WATCHFID (www.watchfid.com) in 2020, whose services are entirely dedicated to collectors of vintage and prestige watches. Tiffany To is currently a Senior International Specialist, auctioneer and Head of Sale at Phillips Fine Watches, having started in the auction industry over 8 years ago. Vintage watches, particularly vintage Rolex, are a lifelong passion of hers. The scholarship, history and discovery of the unknown makes every day in this horological world an interesting and fascinating one.
