VORWORT ⁄ PREFACE

Dear reader, We are delighted to announce that we were recently awarded the Deutscher Verlagspreis [German Publishing Prize], the seal of quality in publishing at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair. Since 2019 this award has acknowledged outstanding achievements in publishing in the Federal Republic of Germany: in publishing houses that “invigorate literary diversity in Germany by publishing special books that stimulate democratic discourse, encourage critical thinking, and enrich our own worlds of thinking and feeling” (from the award presentation speech given by Wolfram Weimer, Minister of State for Culture and Media). We view this distinction, a first for us as publishers, as specifically recognizing our commitment to the applied arts and design as well as appreciating our unceasing efforts in this wonderful niche market to realize books that are every bit as special as the artworks presented in them. Ensuring that art and books on art, besides providing the sensory gratification that they do, also critically challenge societal developments and even shape them is particularly important to us. Art provides space for developing visions of how our society can and should look in the future. At the present time especially, art, cultural communication, and education can promote understanding of our fellow human beings and the diversity of cultural expression to an exceptional degree. Viewed in this light, the award as we see it represents encouragement to continue publishing a wide range of subjects in the fields of art and design to the highest standard.

arnoldsche team with Hugo

Sincerely yours, Dirk Allgaier, Publisher

Christian Dell, 1928

Christian Dell (1893–1974), silversmith, Bauhaus master craftsman, and head of the metal workshop of the Frankfurter Kunstschule [Frankfurt Art School], is one of the lesser-known designers of the 20th century. Yet his diverse oeuvre and his impact on design—from the 1930s to the present—deserves to be reappraised. This publication provides a first comprehensive overview of Dell’s work and career, including his training in Hanau, teaching in Weimar and Frankfurt am Main, and contacts to the lighting industry. One of Dell’s iconic lamp designs is the KAISER idellTM, an office lamp which is back in production today. Moreover, he was an inspiration to numerous students, whose works are introduced here in more detail. Conceptual sketches, series products, and exquisite individual objects in a wide range of materials are also presented—for Dell’s early work with new types of plastic would go on to inform consumer tastes for decades to come. An exciting monograph on a significant, visionary, and hitherto unrecognized designer of the 20th century.

Jahrhunderts.

BAROVIER & TOSO A Murano Glass Dynasty

Ercole Barovier, Oriente, 1940

As one of Murano’s most prominent glassmaking dynasties, the Baroviers played a pivotal role in reviving traditional glassmaking techniques and can thus look back on a long tradition within Venetian glass production. In the late 19th century, two generations of the family found employment as master glassblowers at Antonio Salviati’s glassworks. With their distinct feel for glass as a material, their outstanding technical know-how, and their drive towards new developments, Giovanni Barovier with his nephews Benedetto, Benvenuto, and Giuseppe went on to set up their own business at the close of the century. Their revival of mosaic glass (murrine) had a long-lasting influence on Murano’s glass production. Operating under various names—and then from the 1930s in association with the Toso brothers—yet always maintaining a distinctive artistic style, they continued to lead the field until artistic production ceased entirely in 1993. This extensive volume illuminates not only the history of Barovier & Toso but also its complete body of artistic work, spanning nearly a century.

Since 2008 the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts Leipzig has published three catalogues titled Vessel / Sculpture, which not only reflect a selection of its ceramic collection holdings but have also since become definitive books on the subject. New outstanding acquisitions and donations have now given rise to a fourth volume. The selected works are impressive examples of modern studio ceramics, objects situated between purposeful vessel and autonomous sculpture. With a multifaceted wealth of forms and surfaces, the works enter into an aesthetic dialogue that explores the diverse possibilities of artistic production within this field. This volume is characterized by additional selected works on paper by ceramic artists, which document the range of artistic resources within their craft. The comprehensive artist biographies and illustrations of makers’ marks result in a well-founded reference work.

In this publication, Dana Widawski reveals a fascinating panorama of ceramic work. With subtle humor and provocative depth, she transcends the boundaries between art and craft in her tiled tableaux and assemblages. In surprising, playful, yet precise ways, she dares to expose both our present-day kitsch and also that found in art itself, right up to its tipping point. “Dana Widawski’s figures … provoke a simultaneous attraction and disgust: too delicate, too cute, too pretty, too frivolous, too direct—all industrial white sugar. Something happens, you become gripped, emotionally, personally. You are made aware of your own feelings and associations …” (Esther Niebel).

Halb so wild! [Half as Wild!], 2018, tiled tableaux

Dana Meyer’s South Pacific Expedition provides a fascinating insight into the world of entomological collecting, driven by the human urge for discovery and adventure. Featuring numerous illustrations and twelve letters, this book tells not only of the passion of an insect collector but also of a perilous journey to the South Seas at the turn of the century. Published in this form for the first time, this collection is a fascinating and at the same time unsettling art project that blurs the boundaries between authenticity and fiction.

With art in architecture, that is Kunst am Bau, architecture and fine art meet face to face. Through their mutual influence and dialogue with each other, they shape the surrounding space—at times subtly, at others conspicuously—either as an integral part of the building or independently in the interior and exterior. This dynamic relationship is what makes art in architecture a unique and especially challenging terrain, not only for the artists but also for those who are charged with the realization and preservation of the artworks. Kunst am Bau. Zustände, Erhalt und Vermittlung is the first comprehensive work to navigate these site-specific objects. They are revealed as far more than standalone art objects: they also reflect the zeitgeist and their architectural environment. Alongside an introduction to their cultural-historical significance, selection process, and realization, the book provides an overview of quintessential shifts in art in architecture over time, concluded by depictions of preservation strategies and approaches to mediation that far transcend the field of study.

Helen Williams Drutt

Helen Williams Drutt is an American gallerist, collector, mediator, and promoter of contemporary art jewelry. In homage to this grande dame of international studio jewelry and her 60 years of collecting, the publication presents selected works by American and German artists in a combination never before seen. Representing the diversity of American art jewelry are 140 examples from the last 70 years, from modernist minimalist or narrative works to objects with a strong sociopolitical message. The display of almost 100 works by German jewelry artists impressively documents the various developments in contemporary jewelry in both countries, as well as mutual influences and commonalities. The works testify to Helen Williams Drutt’s great devotion to and engagement with art jewelry. Moreover, they represent her friendship with artists from both the USA and Germany and, not least, the close cultural and artistic connection between these two countries.

Typhaine Le Monnier – Playtime

An Artistic Journey in Form and Meaning Eine künstlerische Reise in Form und Bedeutung Graphic design: Joana Durães, Lisbon 96 pp., 17 × 24 cm, approx. 80 ills. Swiss binding. English / German. € 28 [D] / US$ 50 / £ 32 ISBN 978-3-89790-764-5 May 2026 E⁄D

In Typhaine Le Monnier’s atelier, work never stops. Hands move instinctively while the mind circles around unresolved questions—shaping forms from fragments, discarded jewels, and fleeting ideas. What appears repetitive gradually reveals a deep, evolving investigation into form and meaning. Repetition exposes the resistance of materials: the fragility of stone, the stubbornness of metal, and the limits of turning thought into matter. Le Monnier’s practice is fueled by the fraught tension between failure and discovery, doubt and intuition. Her work wavers between jewelry and sculpture, intimacy and collectivity, questioning the ways in which we inhabit the world and the role objects play within it. In Playtime, play is no escape; it is a method of survival, a way to sit with discomfort and keep creating despite uncertainty.

This monograph is devoted to Joël Faivre-Chalon (1953–2020), French creator of contemporary jewelry. Trained in Strasbourg and subsequently based in Montpellier, Joël Faivre-Chalon never viewed jewelry as mere ornament: his pieces are the fruit of patient research conducted into form (which, in his hands, tends to be pared down), technique, and materials. His work can be imagined in two broad phases: the first devoted to experiments with color, followed by a second focused on studying volume, drawing on innovative materials such as titanium, slate, laminate, or carbon fiber.

Galerie Marzee, 2025

The name Marzee refers to intertwined identities. There is Marie-José van den Hout (known as Marzee), the dealer whose drive and passion makes everything possible. There is Galerie Marzee, the institution with a rich backstory, a fabulous building, and enviable programs. And there is the Marzee Collection, more than 2,500 objects that track the history of Marzee the individual and Marzee the gallery. This book, with a foreword by Petra Hölscher, chapters by Susan Cummins, Flos Wildschut, and Lizzie Atkins, and photographs by Michiel Heffels, tells the story of the dealer, the gallery, and the collection. In 1978 Marie-José opened the first Galerie Marzee in an old butcher’s shop in Nijmegen, the Netherlands; today the gallery occupies an impressively renovated grain warehouse on the river Waal. Imbued with the powerful minimalism of the building, MARZEE the book presents over 300 pieces from the Marzee Collection that have been chosen and arranged by Marie-José van den Hout herself.

Marjan Unger

Jewellery in Context is the doctoral dissertation, in its first English translation, by the Dutch art historian Marjan Unger (1942–2018). In this work she endeavors to formulate a general definition of jewelry. She describes how since time immemorial all human fears, but also desires, have, in a sense, materialized as objects of adornment. A must-read for everybody!

Foreword You hold in your hands the English translation of Marjan Unger’s dissertation. In my opinion, this essay is one of her purest. Among all the other texts I know on adornment and jewellery, it stands out as an absolute elementary standard work, and I consider it a ‘must-read’ for every jewellery student. But also for

Yoko Ono Born 1933 in Tokyo Prefecture (Japan), lives and works in New York (USA)

PH

The Japanese artist Yoko Ono is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding pioneers of the conceptual art, performance, and part of the international Fluxus movement. Yoko Ono’s extensive life work is a document of her multimedia versatility and radical approach as an experimental artist, musician, composer, filmmaker and peace and human rights activist. The Imagine Peace finger ring, created in 2004, consciously references Yoko Ono and John Lennon’s (1940—1980) commitment to peace and to their song Imagine, which was released in 1971 and is still considered an anthem of the peace movement today. Accordingly, the ‘gem’ of the ring is designed in the shape of a single vinyl disc. In addition to its function as a piece of jewellery, the ring is an invitation to peace. PH

Kunst, Frankfurt a. M., Der in Pforzheim lebende Schmuckkünstler 2025, S. 72.

Isabel Schmidt-Mappes

The aristocratic families of Europe once held luxurious banquets featuring exquisite accessories to display their power. Trade, conquests, and migration introduced “exotic” fruits and spices, changing customs and traditions. In this exceptional publication on the mores of dining, the Pforzheim Jewellery Museum presents historical goldsmithing and contemporary design, jewelry “to eat,” and treasures from across the globe.

The glazes of classic Chinese ceramics have long been fascinating to experts and collectors. This publication explores 13 glaze types, their effects, natural models, contrasts, and technical or physical dynamics. Their extraordinary beauty is illustrated by way of the classically inspired works of the Royal Copenhagen stoneware studio, created between the 1930s and 1970s. Artists’ signatures and date codes are part of the addendum.

Technique A high iron content (8–15 %), complemented by a greater addition of umbra (7.5 %), creates a black colour in reduction firing (withdrawal of oxygen). A ceramic mass with high manganese content, from which the metallic components migrate into the glaze, often causes extraordinary surface effects. Appearance Shiny, barely translucent, frequently with a mirroring surface. Consistent deep-black colour. Exposed rims and parts with plastic decoration may change colour and develop a deep redbrown or a rusty-red with metallic sheen. This is because, here, the glaze flows off more easily, allowing colouring minerals to emerge from the ceramic mass. Special Features If the cooling process is considerably delayed by constantly adding fuel, iron particles can regroup and, helped by the manganese, create extraordinary glaze effects. These include, for instance, patches of golden brown colour that seem to float, or, another phenomenon, two superimposed crystalline layers (aventurine glaze), or even a silvery mirroring, delicately crystallised surface structure.

The moving life of Jan Bontjes van Beek (1899–1969) is closely associated with 20th-century German history. Like no other, he emphasized materiality in form and dynamism in color. During tumultuous times, he sought out the perfect balance for his vessels, and ultimately for himself. This publication is the first overview of this outstanding artist’s work.

Was eigentlich kennzeichnet keramische Plastik? -->

9 783897 907454 colours and shapes that were slightly unusual for her. Chain of Sorrow. I had to sit down. I cried.

In November, I see Irene’s work Hanging Fear. It is part of her solo exhibition I Find It Harder and Harder To Live Up To My Blue China at Format Oslo. Hanging Fear is a wallmounted work in pink distorted stoneware. The expression is more rugged than glossy porcelain and evokes a sense of disquiet. In the exhibition text, the Norwegian critic Line Ulekleiv describes the work as follows: “In her own words, Irene Nordli makes ceramics without happy endings. Her formal idiom is constantly undergoing renewal. In the sculptures for the exhibition at Format Oslo, organised in series, the material carries indications of thorough transformation. The surfaces are no longer smooth and appealing, as they tend to be in Nordli’s works, but rather unpolished and rough to the touch, abstracted to the point of brutal expressivity. […] These ragged, jagged works possess little of the pleasing ambivalence between conventional elegance and the negation of the expected whole that we usually associate with fragments. It is as if the organic materiality has thrust itself into the foreground and taken over, no longer restrained by a membrane of cool white glaze.”6 The pink distorted work at Format Oslo was more than just an example of “renewal”, as Line Ulekleiv so aptly puts it. If anything, it was a direct expression of savage change. Which is precisely how it felt at the time – a feeling. Something macabre and abstract was asserting itself.

When I ask Irene to tell me about the work, she starts with some rather matter-of-fact background: Chain of Sorrow is a series of cast objects in porcelain. During my residency at NTP in spring 2014, I set up a workplace in a former plaster-casting workshop. Although the factory was still in active use, the upper floors seemed almost abandoned. On the top floor, I found a storeroom full of moulds. These were originally used for casting various transformers, but they were no longer in use. She explains that her residency at the factory influenced what she was going to make for the exhibition in a variety of ways and mentions, almost as an aside, that she was grieving for her sister. I started making casts using the old plaster moulds. By opening the moulds before the clay had completely hardened, I could continue working on the transformer casts I had made. The clay was so soft I could still squeeze, deform and manipulate it. I also allowed gravity to determine their appearance, by dropping the forms onto the work surface. The grief I was feeling and the sadness of the empty factory space spilled over into these rejected shapes, influencing both their expression and the choice of colours. I saw the value in the transition from a technical purpose to something utterly non-technical, from results that were useless to objects that were entirely new, had become unrecognisable and lost any identifiable purpose. They were objects on the verge of collapse, and I found the transformation satisfying. I coloured the porcelain, or, more precisely, I added pigment to the casting material, producing a range of these small objects in a variety of blue and grey tones. So it was the aspect of grief that hit me on seeing this series of objects. It was an unusual and rare experience for me.

Without a doubt, it has always fascinated me how little it takes for the pure and innocent to tip into the grotesque. But there always has to be an element of beauty in it, either a colour, a texture or a movement.

When Katrine fell ill and eventually died, a tone of seriousness entered my life. Up until then, I had been fairly sheltered with regard to the thought of losing someone close to me. It was a new and troubling feeling I had to learn to live with. At the time, I was working at the art academy in Oslo, where my daily contacts were young students and staff. And of course there was my own family. I saw a lot of Katrine’s children, husband and her close friends. There was

Artist Fabian Gatermann uses light as the key medium for his installations, objects, and multiples to investigate new dimensions. He disengages himself from the classic scientific engineering system of testing; instead, his works can be seen as open-ended unconventional experiments that provoke active participation and invite the viewer to become part of a multi-perspective game of light and space.

Tibetan Women’s Jewelry describes the cultural history of Central Tibet told through traditional jewelry and trade from the 17th century of the 5th Dalai Lama through the 14th Dalai Lama’s 1959 exile to India. This art book presents 10 distinctive styles of women’s relic boxes (Gaus), as well as other adornments and traditional clothing elements. Details from private interviews with the last nobles and master goldsmiths reveal how these treasures were worn. This innovative study establishes for the first time that jewelry styles changed with each Dalai Lama, setting an important dating precedent for all Tibetan collectibles. Meticulous research makes this the definitive scholarly publication on Tibetan jewelry.

The four alternate lotus flowers (at the top center, bo om center and two side centers) each have six heart-shaped turquoise petals, which are rare signs of age. Kalsang Metok Gaus had eight turquoise flowers around a larger center flower. STYLE 1 versions were small in size, square in shape, straight-sided, and had four rounded, scalloped side appendages and open wirework background filigree. On the outer sides are pearled, wirework, four-petal lotus flowers. Pearled wirework indicates Newar fabrication. (See this Gau on top le corner of the chart on Fig. 5 and on Chapter 1’s Quick Look page.) Lhasa, U Province, Central Tibet. 3" (7.62 cm.) square × ⅞" (2.21 cm.) deep. Reign of 8th Dalai Lama (r. 1762–1804) – Circa 1790–1800.

Fig. 629. Agors reached their pinnacle of perfection in this pair of extremely rare, gold and turquoise, noble-woman’s, lotus-shaped “Round Ear Pendants” with precious stones (rubies, emeralds and diamonds), all of which are faceted. The short black cords at the top hooked onto the wearer’s hair and the ear pendants were connected by another cord that went over the top of the head so the ear decorations hung down in front of the ears. Agors had four distinct sections. At the top was a small teardrop-shaped turquoise lotus bud finial with its point on top, which is outlined with pearls and rests on a base consisting of two turquoises, two rubies and an emerald bead in the center. The second section is a larger, rounder, teardrop-shaped lotus petal, also with its point on top and also outlined with pearls. It has an outer ring of rounded, slab-cut, inlaid turquoises around a turquoise and gold Bumpa (“Treasure Vase”) in the center that has two rubies on top held by gold flower bezels and two faceted emeralds underneath on either side of the vase’s half-moon turquoise base. Under three gold petals representing a statue’s lotus petal base is a downward pointing diamond teardrop. The third section is round and has an outer border of separated gold rings and an inner border of diamonds, which encircle eight beautiful, plump, heart-shaped turquoises, eight small pearls and a faceted round ruby in the center. This is separated from the lower section by a horizontal row with two rubies on either side of an emerald on the le earring which is missing on the right earring but is barely noticeable. The fourth section at the bo om is composed of a downward pointing lotus flower made of seven beautifully carved turquoise petals around an oval faceted ruby, a larger oval emerald and a round faceted ruby. These are enclosed by a border of pearls and two small upturned turquoise leaves on the le earring and two small upturned ruby leaves on the right earring. There is only one other similar known pair of Agor ear pendants, which was worn by Rigzin Bhuti Ragashar, one of the highest rank Lhasa aristocrats, as early as 1921. The date was predicated on this and on the length of the ear pendants. There are no finer Agors than this incredible pair. They were purchased in 1996 from a dealer representing the Sikkimese royal family as once having belonged to the Yuthok family. Lhasa, U Province, Central Tibet. Approx. 4¾" (12.07 cm.) long. Reign of the 13th Dalai Lama (r. 1979–1933) – Circa 1920.

! STAHL ROHR REvOL uTION! design

foundation

Daniel Kruger gives curious things an unexpected meaning. Out of movement and fascinated by the visual quality of objects, shapes and colours, he creates a connection as a synthesis of supposed opposites. A newly created context elevates these connections to preciousness. By means of his freedom of thought, he creates a small world.

Antoine Leperlier, born in Évreux, France, in 1953, began his apprenticeship in pâte de verre in 1968, under the watchful eye of his grandfather François Décorchemont (1880–1971). After studying Philosophy and Fine Arts at the University of Paris 1 (Sorbonne) and the École du Louvre, he returned to the family studio in 1978 to create his first works in glass. It was during his research for his DEA degree in Fine Arts, where he studied his grandfather’s technical notebooks, that he decided to return to his roots and devote himself to creating works in glass, seeing this approach as a means of breaking away from the dominant aesthetic of the time. In 1980, his brother, Étienne (1952–2014), joined him, and together they shared the studio for some fifteen years before going separate ways. From the outset, Antoine Leperlier showed an early interest in painting and drawing, and today he explores watercolour in particular, a technique with which he discovers similarities to his work in glass. He has exhibited internationally since 1982 and his work can be found in numerous national and international collections. At the same time, he teaches, lectures and takes part in conferences around the world.

In this overview of Antoine Leperlier’s work, which spans over forty years, snakes are petrified, skulls slump and what evokes abstract watercolours seems to have suddenly and forever frozen at random within the heart of liquid glass. Glass is a material of time, which immortalises the instant while exposing its passage; time stands still, the universe can speak. Leperlier’s works explore the ephemeral and the fix, the memory and the flux, the before and the after. For him, ‘the images are movements captured in matter’. This attempt to render visible ‘the impetus or momentum, the captured allure of things’ (Michel Guérin) is a unique approach in contemporary glass art.

The Magic of Ceramic Glazes

Höfische Vergnügen Courtly Pleasures

Courtly Pleasures presents the most beautiful table decorations from the abundant treasures of a southwest German private collection. Scenes of gardens and of love, idyllic hunting parties, and lifelike animal figurines were popular motifs in porcelain from the Baroque to the beginning of the 19th century. They were intended to initiate conversation among the table guests—and of course attest to the discerning taste of the hosts.

Gun-Dagmar Helke & Hela Schandelmaier

Chapter I analyzes the condition of Degas’ waxes at the time of his death and presents technical evidence indicating that only one of Degas’ surviving waxes was not posthumously assembled from scattered fragments. It also argues that the surviving Degas waxes do not represent a random sampling of a much larger lost sculptural oeuvre, and that Degas may have appreciated the seemingly damaged or incomplete state of some of his waxes. Chapter II presents physical and documentary evidence that the Degas plasters preserved for years at the old Valsuani foundry in Paris were not cast at the same time. Chapter III is an in-depth study of the Tub plaster, which records an earlier state of one of Degas’ most important sculptures. Chapter IV presents physical and documentary evidence stating that perhaps as many as half of the Hébrard bronzes were actually cast at the Valsuani foundry in Paris in the 1950s and 1960s. It then considers the evidence as to when, how, and by whom the final selection of seventy-four Degas models that were eventually cast into bronze by Hébrard was made.

SACRED CIRCLE IN TIBETAN BUDDHISM

Buddhists view the mandala as an allegory and symbol of the totality of man and of the cosmos, and practitioners use it in meditation that is to lead to enlightenment. Numerous illustrations of mandalas, drawings, and figures describe it structurally and elucidate this complex form of Tantric practice in understandable terms. This book by Martin Brauen is the updated and extensively expanded edition of his 1992 publication, which has long been out of print and is regarded as one of the most comprehensive works on the mandala. The present publication contains texts, illustrations, and tables that provide manifold approaches to and interpretations of this sacred symbol.
