During the National Socialist era, Ida Kerkovius (1879–1970) was vilified as a ‘‘degenerate’’ artist for her paintings, yet she continued to work on in seclusion far from prying eyes. After 1945, she became one of the most important women artists of the postwar years in a male-dominated art industry. She transformed the visible world into rhythmically abstract compositions that are a truly sensory experience. The comprehensive catalogue raisonné of this exceptional artist’s work is published in the fall of this year (pp. 8–9).
The course in Transportation Design launched at Pforzheim University in 1984 is now one of the most prestigious of its kind worldwide. Our publication presents not only its history but also sketches by leading international designers and even outlines a perspective for the future of global mobility (pp. 6–7).
The world’s largest collection of Meissen porcelain with armorial bearings takes us on a memorably illustrated tour of European nobility in the 18th century, reflected in the history of early Saxon treasures from the world of European porcelain that was then at the cutting edge of innovation (pp. 16–17).
These are the artists, designers, and inventors who can and should be role models for us, sources of inspiration for us to draw on, encouraging us in our efforts to keep ourselves from being misguided in challenging situations and to make the world more beautiful and livable.

die Kunst von Ida Kerkovius (1879–1970) wurde während der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus als „entartet“ diffamiert, doch sie arbeitete im Verborgenen weiter. Nach 1945 wurde sie in einem männlich dominierten Kunstbetrieb zu einer der bedeutendsten Künstlerinnen der Nachkriegszeit. Sie transformierte die sichtbare Welt in abstrakt-rhythmische Kompositionen, die zu einem wahrhaft sinnlichen Erlebnis werden. Das umfassende Werkverzeichnis dieser außergewöhnlichen Künstlerin erscheint diesen Herbst (S. 8–9).
1984 wurde in der Hochschule Pforzheim der Studiengang „Transportation Design“ gegründet, der heute zu den weltweit renommiertesten seiner Art zählt. Unsere Publikation präsentiert nicht nur seine Geschichte sowie Entwürfe international führender Designer:innen, sondern entwirft auch eine Perspektive für die Mobilität von morgen (S. 6–7). Die weltweit umfangreichste Privatsammlung Meissener Porzellans mit Wappendarstellungen führt uns anschaulich die Geschichte des europäischen Adels im 18. Jahrhundert vor Augen – im Spiegel der frühen sächsischen Kostbarkeiten aus der damals hoch-innovativen Welt des Porzellans (S. 16–17). Es sind die Künstler:innen, Designer:innen und Erfinder:innen, die ein Vorbild dafür sein können, uns von unserer Inspiration leiten zu lassen, uns auch in herausfordernden Situationen nicht beirren zu lassen und mit Außergewöhnlichem die Welt schöner und lebenswerter zu machen.

Almost a hundred years after the invention of the car, the time must have been deemed right to devote a course of study to this means of transport and its design. In 1984 in Pforzheim, not far from the sites of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, the Transportation Design study program—then known as Automobile Design— was thus launched. Today it belongs to one of the sector’s most prestigious training institutions in the world. Numerous designers have studied here who have since become international leaders in the field and whose designs have influenced the global automotive industry in a significant way.
This publication documents the more than 40-year history of the program through its numerous designs and achievements up to the present day. The authors also present their vision for the future of Transportation Design and mobility, making this publication an important source of inspiration for contemporary car design.
Fast 100 Jahre nach der Erfindung des Automobils schien es an der Zeit, diesem Verkehrsmittel und dessen Gestalt einen eigenen Studiengang zu widmen. In Pforzheim, ganz in der Nähe von Mercedes-Benz und Porsche, wurde 1984 der Studiengang Transportation Design – damals unter der Bezeichnung Kraftfahrzeug Design – ins Leben gerufen; heute ist es eine der renommiertesten Ausbildungsstätten in diesem Bereich weltweit. Hier studierten zahlreiche, inzwischen international führende Designer:innen, die die globale Fahrzeugindustrie mit ihren Entwürfen maßgeblich beeinflusst haben.

The artist Ida Kerkovius (1879–1970) is today regarded as a central figure of German modernism, navigating between Impressionism, Expressionism, and abstraction. She studied under Adolf Hölzel, considered one of the pioneers of abstract painting in Germany, and studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar, where Paul Klee and Johannes Itten in particular influenced her work. From the 1930s, she continued her artistic evolution in Stuttgart and, following the rupture caused by National Socialism, established herself there as one of the foremost female German artists. Although staunchly committed to figurative representation, abstraction becomes a sensuous experience in her impressive paintings—a feature that makes her work unique to this day.
This comprehensive catalogue raisonné provides a first overview of the development and creative force of Ida Kerkovius, one of the few women who were able to exert a lasting impact on the male-dominated art establishment of the time.
Uwe Jourdan works for Nagel Auctions in Stuttgart, Germany, where he began as an expert and auctioneer, later becoming CEO and a shareholder. He is the author of several art publications. He has been collecting material for Ida Kerkovius’s catalogue raisonné for three decades.
Die Künstlerin Ida Kerkovius (1879–1970) wird heute als eine zentrale Figur der deutschen Moderne angesehen, die zwischen Impressionismus, Expressionismus und Abstraktion vermittelte. Sie war Schülerin von Adolf Hölzel, der als einer der Wegbereiter der abstrakten Malerei in Deutschland gilt, und studierte am Weimarer Bauhaus, wo besonders Paul Klee und Johannes Itten ihr Werk beeinflussten. Ab den 1930er-Jahren setzte sie ihre künstlerische Entwicklung in Stuttgart fort und konnte sich dort nach der Zäsur des Nationalsozialismus als eine der führenden deutschen Künstlerinnen etablieren. Sie bekennt sich ausdrücklich zur figürlichen Darstellung und zugleich wird die Abstraktion in ihrer eindrucksvollen Malerei zu einem sinnlichen Erlebnis –ein Merkmal, das ihr Werk bis heute einzigartig macht. For 40 years, Lisbet Friis has worked with textile printing as an art form. In this book she presents a wide selection of handprinted patterns, along with descriptions of techniques and dye formulas. Examples and instructions for textile printing using reactive dyes and printing with mechanical and chemical resist techniques are also included. All techniques are illustrated with printed works in all ranges of colors to inspire artists and art lovers.
Textile printing is a specialized discipline within textile design that requires mastering the combination of artistic approach, technical execution, and aesthetic expression. It is an artistic field with a distinct visual and tactile impact.
A great deal of knowledge is being lost as the textile industry becomes increasingly digitalized—this publication aims to preserve this knowledge and expertise and in doing so impart it to future generations.

For Lena Kaapke, ceramic red is the starting point for her artistic exploration. The different properties, processes, applications, and biographies of this red are examined in different installations, contesting the traditional definition of color and calling for a new approach to it within the field of ceramics. When seen collectively, the works create connections that open up a sensuous space for color and thought, in which color can be perceived in its spatial, temporal, and performative contexts. Kaapke’s exploration of ceramic red led her to develop a standardized chromatic spectrum, resulting in a visually arranged, tactile color archive comprising almost 10,000 shades of ceramic red and an accompanying database, also to be published. Redspace is not just a standardized spectrum but also an inquiry—and, as such, a one-off. As a spatial entity, Redspace is a reflection of the artist’s praxis, one which invites the reader to experience the multilayered expressive potential of a single ceramic color.
Keramisches Rot ist der Ausgangspunkt von Lena Kaapkes künstlerischer Auseinandersetzung. Unterschiedliche Installationen befragen die verschiedenen Eigenschaften, Prozesse, Anwendungen und Biografien des Rots, stellen dabei die herkömmliche Definition von Farbe infrage und fordern auf, diese für die Keramik neu zu denken. Werden die Werke zusammen gesehen, ergeben sich Verknüpfungen, die einen sinnlichen Farb- und Gedankenraum eröffnen: Farbe kann in ihren räumlichen, zeitlichen und performativen Dimensionen wahrgenommen werden. Die Vermessung des keramischen Rots führte Lena Kaapke zur Entwicklung einer Normierung. Diese offenbart sich in einem visuell geordneten, haptischen Farbarchiv mit fast 10.000 keramischen Rottönen und einer dazugehörigen Datenbank, welche ebenfalls veröffentlicht werden: Redspace ist Normierung und Befragung zugleich und in dieser Form einmalig. Als räumliches Objekt spiegelt Redspace die Arbeitsweise der Künstlerin wider und lädt die Betrachter:innen ein, das vielschichtige Ausdruckspotenzial einer einzigen keramischen Farbe zu erleben.

During his world trip in 1906, the Norwegian Eivind Eckbo spent three months in Japan. There, he visited Shinto sanctuaries, photographed everyday life, and developed a deep fascination with Japanese culture. This took place within the context of the Japonism movement, which developed in Europe at the end of the 19th century. His fascination became a lifelong passion that is evident in his numerous photographs and a collection of Japanese art objects, including several ukiyo-e, Japanese woodblock prints from the 17th to the 19th century.
The publication not only highlights the great connection between Eivind Eckbo who founded the Eckbo Foundation with his wife, Alice Mary Higford, in 1923 and Japanese art and culture, but also uses this previously unpublished collection to illustrate the heyday of extraordinary Japanese art objects during the Meiji period.
Im Jahr 1906 verbrachte der Norweger Eivind Eckbo während seiner Weltreise drei Monate in Japan. Dort besuchte er ShintoSchreine, fotografierte das Alltagsleben und entwickelte eine tiefe Faszination für die japanische Kultur. Damit bewegt er sich im Kontext der Japonismus-Bewegung, die sich Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts in Europa entwickelt hatte. Diese Faszination wurde zu einer lebenslangen Leidenschaft und zeigt sich anhand seiner zahlreichen Fotografien sowie einer Sammlung von japanischen Kunstobjekten, darunter auch Ukiyo-e, japanische Farbholzschnitte aus der Zeit vom 17. bis 19. Jahrhundert. Die Sammlung Ralph Hänig zählt ohne Zweifel zu den zurzeit bedeutendsten Sammlungen von Meissener Porzellan des 18. Dieser neue Sammlungskatalog, der auch Böttgersteinzeuge und Böttgerporzellane mit Wappenmalerei umfasst, repräsentiert neben den heraldischen Zeichen alle bedeutsamen Dekorationsarten der Meissener Frühzeit. The Ralph Hänig Collection is without doubt one of the most significant collections of 18th-century Meissen porcelain today, commissioned by the kings of Poland and Electors of Saxony August II and August III, either for their own use or as diplomatic gifts to other royal houses in Europe. A large part also comprises personal orders by noblemen who sought to grace themselves with this new status symbol—among them Elector Clemens August of Cologne and the Prussian king Friedrich II. This new catalogue of the collection, which also includes Böttger stoneware and Böttger porcelain featuring painted coats-ofarms, presents all significant styles of decoration from Meissen’s early period as well as heraldic marks. It thus offers the reader the opportunity to gain vivid insight into a significant part of European history as reflected in early Saxon porcelain.

The Vienna-based lawyer and attorney Dr. Karl Bollmann (1943–2022) was a passionate enthusiast and well-respected connoisseur of international auteur jewelry, which he collected with his wife, Heidi, from 1970 to 2022. Today the Bollmann Collection is one of the most important private collections of artistic jewelry in the world, comprising 1,747 one-off pieces by the international avant-garde.
The cornerstone of the collection features the most significant artists of early art jewelry from the second half of the 20th century, such as Max Fröhlich, Bruno Martinazzi, Peter Skubic, Yasuki Hiramatsu, Thomas Gentille, and Hermann Jünger, accompanied by representatives of the generation that followed, including Annamaria Zanella, Manfred Bischoff, Georg Dobler, Tanel Veenre, and Mari Ishikawa. Over the years, the collector couple also set their sights on artists from the United States, Australia, and Asia and in so doing mapped the auteur jewelry community scattered across the globe. This publication is the first to present the collection in its entirety.
Dr. Karl Bollmann (1943–2022) – Jurist und Rechtsanwalt in Wien – war ein großer Liebhaber und geachteter Kenner internationalen Autorenschmucks, den er von 1970 bis 2022 gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Heidi sammelte. Since 1999, the Gesellschaft für Goldschmiedekunst e. V. (Society for Goldsmithing) has been fostering international networking within the jewelry and utensils scene through the Friedrich Becker Prize. The award commemorates the renowned goldsmith and designer of kinetic objects Friedrich Becker (1922–1997). Endowed by his wife, Hildegard Becker (1928–2018), this prestigious accolade now celebrates its tenth triennial with the publication of this catalogue, which features a special homage to its eponym alongside a comprehensive chronicle of its history. This anniversary publication is, of course, also devoted to this year’s competition, in which Veronika Fabian (HU) emerged as the winner with Spring ring XXXL / Clasp me firmly, hold me tight. Forty-eight works in total are presented, each showcasing craftsmanship, precision, and sophistication combined with powerful creative expression.
Seit 1999 fördert die Gesellschaft für Goldschmiedekunst e. V. mit dem Friedrich Becker Preis die internationale Vernetzung der zeitgenössischen Schmuck- und Geräteszene. Mit dem Preis wird an Friedrich Becker (1922–1997), den renommierten Goldschmied und Gestalter kinetischer Objekte, erinnert.
