Raynham Hall

An English Country House Revealed Michael Ridgdill, foreword by John Julius Norwich

ISBN: 9781851498604 ACC Art Books 8.5 x 10.75 in. 224pp., 140 col. February 2018 $50.00/CDN$67.50 Hardcover

●

A house of national importance, which has hosted English monarchs and nobility from the Jacobean period to the present day, is making itself publicly accessible for the first time

●

Raynham Hall has been the seat of the politically and culturally significant Townshend family for nearly 400 years, and is one of the earliest examples of neo-Palladian architecture in England, boasting exquisite furniture and interiors redesigned by William Kent

On the eve of its 400th anniversary, Raynham Hall is experiencing a renaissance. The present Marquess and Marchioness Townshend are breathing new life into this ancient family house, which has been passed down through generation after generation, and are sharing its treasures with the public for the first time. As one of the earliest examples of neo-Palladian architecture in England, and with significant William Kent interiors, Raynham Hall is now the focal point of an entire book devoted to its evolution as a splendid country house and as the seat of one of England’s most important families. This book serves as the first comprehensive survey of the house, its history, its evolution, and divulges the history of the Townshend family, whose impact on British politics has been felt since before the sixteen hundreds.

2 ARCHITECTURE

Contributions from all Archigram members, and essays by critics writing then and now

Archigram comprised Warren Chalk (1927-88), Peter Cook (1936-), Dennis Crompton (1935-), David Greene (1937-), Ron Herron (1930-94), and Michael Webb (1937-). Together, in the 1960s and early 1970s, they envisioned the future of architecture in ways that enthralled a generation. In an era defined by the space race, they developed a ‘high-tech’, lightweight, infra-structural approach that stretched far beyond known technologies or contemporary realities. They devised autonomous dwellings and focused on survival technology; they experimented with mega structures and modular construction systems; they explored mobility through the environment, and the use of portable living capsules: all through the medium of an incredible series of drawings and models. Archigram’s influence has been profound and enduring. They gave the High-tech movement its impetus; they inspired architects such as Renzo Piano and Norman Foster; and they laid the ground for the design of buildings such as the Pompidou Centre. This book catalogues Archigram’s activities over fourteen years, together with commentaries by the architects and critics writing then and now. Edited and designed by Archigram member Dennis Crompton, it has been 40 years in the making.

Paris. Île de la Cité 2040 Philippe Bélaval, Dominique Perrault ●

An impressive rethinking of the core of Paris by star architect Dominique Perrault

The historic centre of Paris, the Ile de la Cité, is notably home to the Hôtel-Dieu hospital, NotreDame cathedral, Saint-Chapelle, the Palais de justice law court and the flower market. The core of Paris remains, however, largely unknown. In December 2015, Dominique Perrault, architect of the Bibliothèque nationale de France Françoise-Mitterrand and the renovation of the Dufour Pavilion at the Château de Versailles, and Philippe Bélaval, president of the Centre des monuments nationaux, presented a reflection on rethinking the Ile de la Cité with a timeline of 2040. How can this UNESCO World Heritage Site, abandoned by Parisians, be modernised and acquire a breath of life and mobility? With its rich collection of archival documents, engravings, maps and photographs, the book highlights the island’s various renovation and redevelopment projects imagined throughout history, while looking toward the future. To integrate this exceptional site into the city of tomorrow, Dominique Perrault and Philippe Bélaval have imagined 35 proposals that give the island back a central place, notably thanks to the promotion of its exceptional heritage, a revamping of the circulation between its different centres of gravity and the development of its substrata and its foundations as well as its riverside paths.

The Architecture of Mark P. Finlay Edited by Gina Tsarouhas ●

Features an autobiographical account of Connecticut-based architect Mark P. Finlay’s heritage and historic overview of his 30-year design practice

What sort of home would you create for yourself if you could build whatever you wanted - if money, as they say, were no object? Over the course of his firm’s 30-year history, American architect Mark P. Finlay has been in the rare privileged position of helping clients answer that very question. Designing dream homes for some of America’s wealthiest and most sophisticated families - people not only of great means but also of tremendous taste - Finlay creates properties that manage to find intimacy in even the grandest of spaces and grandeur in their intimate moments. Finlay works in the United States’ most storied pastoral locations - coastal New England, Virginia horse country, the Rocky Mountains, the South Carolina lowlands - making homes that lay lightly on the land no matter their size. Whether historic restorations or ground-up constructions, his attention to detail and focus on fine craftsmanship make the buildings look and feel as if they’ve lived on their sites for centuries.

Wide-ranging selection of luxury resort projects spanning Thailand, the Maldives, and Vietnam

Habita Architects is a visionary Thai architectural design firm whose opus of work over several decades has grown into a collective of projects of various sizes and scales. Shown throughout in fullcolor photography, these pages explain Habita’s approach to luxury resort design, which is apparent in the well-integrated architecture and interior designs of the firm’s projects, stretching throughout Thailand and neighbouring countries. Fully illustrated in sumptuous detail, Hotel and Resort Design showcases the combination of the natural and built environments as a delicate entity with its own character, history, and future. Habita details how technology and innovation marry with the site and overall landscape, and how it’s the site’s spatial surroundings that ultimately determines whether the accommodation is perched on the side of a rain-forested valley, suspended above an atoll lagoon, or set back at the rear of a tranquil paddy field. Expertise in both historic Thai architecture and conventional Modernist pedagogy provides work that delivers a guest experience inspired by the natural environment and especially the culture of that place. The synergy of Habita’s work results in a thoughtfulness towards heritage and a consciously considered approach towards innovation.

If Architecture is a Language, Then a Building is a Story Eliezer Armon

“The difference between inspirational stories to the ones lacking inspiration often depends on the order the storyteller chooses to place his creation. In this sense, not only does this book represent a series of architect Eli Armon’s architectural achievements, but also provides a statement on his work in retrospect by attempting a story narrative that looks at the tale of creation. Thus, a new creation is formed, designed by choosing the picture angle, by editing the order of the pictures, and by writing words that interlace into a melody of structure and creation. Armon’s lyrical and philosophical points of view add another dimension to his architectural works that have created a texture of inspiration spots and have already turned into Places throughout our country.” - Abridged text, from the Introduction. This unique monograph delves into intriguing and beguiling architectural works by Eliezer Armon. Inspired by images from Israel and its landscape, worldwide cultures, and the martial arts, Armon’s multidisciplinary and unconventional professional approach to architecture sees in the architectural planning the materialization of views, existential concepts, circles of life and faith, as one united and multifaceted work. His work is that of a curious researcher. It sprouts from biblical sources, the Hebrew letters, Jewish tradition and Kabbalah.

He added value to the buildings he designed by combining living quarters with work spaces, by accounting for green spaces and by taking the environment into consideration. He created project after project, starting from his commitment to sustainability and social involvement. Every time his use of diverse materials and his color play elevated his designs beyond just being buildings. This book comprises his most important work, at first within the architectural office Jan Maenhout, and later in its contemporary successor Atelier M Architects + Planners. Analogous Old-New Architecture Monograph

Miroslav Sik, Eva Willenegger ●

A detailed illustrated monograph on an important architect, pioneer of the compact movement

The terms ‘analogous architecture’ and ‘old-new architecture’ are key aspects of the teaching of Miroslav Sik at the ETH Zurich. During his first period there (1983-1991), Sik worked as Senior Assistant at the Chair of Fabio Reinhart and was in effect the spokesman of an architectural movement that became renowned far beyond the borders of Switzerland and is still influential today. In 1986-1991, the compact movement presented itself to the public with a touring exhibition and an accompanying large-scale ‘Swiss Box’, including chalk perspective drawings of its projects. Miroslav Sik worked as a Full Professor at the ETH Zurich between 1999 and 2018 during his second period there. Since the 1990s, Sik’s theory and teaching have formed an important pillar of Swiss and international architectural history. This extensive volume contains the best 90/120 works respectively by students from both periods of Miroslav Sik’s teaching, including plans, project descriptions and perspective diagrams. Some of the presented students went on to become renowned contemporary Swiss architects. This volume also includes the most important manifesto-like texts by Miroslav Sik and enlightening essays on the movement of analogous and old-new architecture.

Explores the design innovation developed to create a ‘walkable’ environment in high-density cities - using Shanghai and Shenzhen as examples - showing how to make cities more liveable, healthier and friendlier, by making them walkable and overall more sustainable

Modern Chinese cities, which have developed at a rapid speed and on a massive scale for about thirty years, are confronted with many challenges to becoming more liveable, healthy and sustainable. Among a variety of design principles this book suggests that walkability is the fundamental principle to improving quality of life. A walkable city provides a convenient and comfortable walking and cycling environment for all local residents. This book attempts to explore the design innovation of creating a walkable city and to propose solutions within the high-density cities Shenzhen and Shanghai. Selected cases include an urban village in Shenzhen and the CBD and a workers’ community in Shanghai as different spatial examples to which to apply specific design strategies for a livable, healthy and sustainable city.

Illustrates more than 45 innovative case studies, which cover a range of topics and technical applications, such as current trends, environmental benefits, classification and planting forms, site analysis, design and planning, installation, and maintenance

In the 21st century the architects and designers of urban spaces face great challenges to integrate nature in order to transform ”cement forests” into “forest cities”. Perhaps the best solution is to go green with vertical landscapes. More than just a decorative trend, this is a means of bringing life and greenery into metropolitan areas by using different framing systems to create compositions of plant life and adapt them to diverse settings, including offices, factories, parking lots, hotels, and installations within larger parks. Enriched by the reflections of the inventive protagonists of this fertile new aesthetic, Going Green with Vertical Landscapes is organized by theme and canvases early experiments conducted by famous design companies like Vo Trong Nghia Architects (VTN), Fytogreen Australia and RYUICHI ASHIZAWA ARCHITECTS & associates. All of these projects combine man-made materials, recent technologies, and diverse types of vegetation to conquer the vertical dimension.

A Century of Polish Artists in Britain From Axentowich to Zulawski Rachel Dickson ●

First survey of a century-long contribution of Polish artists in Britain

This is a new survey of the contribution of Polish-born artists to British visual culture based on Ben Uri’s exhibition of the same title. It is particularly apt as the Polish community approaches its millionth citizen in Britain, making it the nation’s largest migrant group, and as Poland is about to celebrate its centenary as an independent nation state. It narrates the story of the Polish community in Britain and Poland’s recent turbulent history through the lens of art, tracing the complex stories of Polishborn artists - both Jews and non-Jews - who fled successive regimes, were variously persecuted, imprisoned and interned, crossed continents. But it also looks at Polish people born to today’s world, who have come to Britain to study or develop professionally. It brings together a century of artworks and archival material by both celebrated and lesser-known Polish-born artists from the Ben Uri Collection, as well as Polish institutions and private collectors in Britain. Paintings, posters, prints, drawings, cartoons, book illustrations, film and sculpture explore issues of identity and migration, whilst intersecting with formal art historical developments, ranging from expressionism to Pop Art.

The Diversity of Dyes in History and Archaeology Edited by Jo Kirby Atkinson

The papers published in this collection, all presented at ‘Dyes in History and Archaeology’ meetings, demonstrate how dyes were used through the centuries. If one century is chosen - the 17th century, for example - a fascinating comparison can be made between the dyes and dyeing methods used in Europe, in Turkey, in South America and in Japan, not only on textiles, but also in the pigments used for painting. Taking a different approach, chemical analysis has assisted detective work enabling a distinction to be made between rather similar 18th-century textiles with chinoiserie motifs, not all of which were Chinese in origin. Over the long time scale covered in this book, many developments took place and are described in its pages. One of the most exotic of dyes, shellfish purple, was used in Late Bronze Age wall paintings dated to the 17th century BC at Akrotiri, while over 3000 years later the brilliantly colored, but sometimes impermanent synthetic dyes, devised by chemists, appeared on the market: the azo dyes, fluorescein, the eosins and others. This is an important scholarly contribution to our understanding of dyes in history and archeology.

Presents the first ever overview of humor in seventeenth-century painting Contains 60 masterpieces from painters such as Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Jan Steen, Gerrit van Honthorst and Judith Leyster

Frans Hals is often called ‘the master of the laugh’. More than any other painter in the Golden Age he was able to bring a vitality to his portraits that made it appear as if his models could just step out of the past into the present. Hals was one of the few painters in the seventeenth century who dared portray his figures - often common folk - with a hearty laugh and bared teeth. Merriment and jokes are prominent features in his genre paintings; artists in the Golden Age frequently used it in their work. Now - centuries later - the visual jokes are harder to fathom. A great deal of new research into the field has been carried out, particularly in the last twenty years, and we are beginning to get an idea of the full extent of seventeenth-century humor.

Architectural Paint Research From the Micro to the Macroscopic Edited by Mary Jablonski and Kirsten MofďŹ tt â—?

Papers from the 6th International Architectural Paint Research Conference, covering many topics including: theoretical and analytical examination of colors and pigments, conservation requirements and treatments all over the world, interiors, wooden structures and the use and progress of the digital

The 6th International Architectural Paint Research Conference draws on the successes of five previous APR conferences: Stockholm (2014), Lincoln, England (2010), New York (2008), Copenhagen (2005) and London (2000). It was hosted by Columbia University in New York City, March 2017. The theme of the conference, Powers of Ten, is a reference to a short film from 1977 by Charles and Ray Eames. Like the film, Architectural Paint Research (APR) deals with magnitudes of scale, from a single pigment particle, to a painted house, to the decorative tastes of an entire region. In the spirit of the film, the 2017 APR conference took a closer look at how we carry out our research at every level, from the micro to the macroscopic. The papers in this volume come from the talks at this conference and cover many topics including: theoretical and analytical examination of colors and pigments, conservation requirements and treatments all over the world, interiors, wooden structures and the use and progress of the digital.

With her unmistakable signature and exuberant imagination, Beate Kuhn (1927-2015) is one of the most significant German ceramicists of the post-war era. She turned to the liberal arts as early as the end of the 1950s. In linking sculptural reasoning with the possibilities of the material and inherent pottery techniques, the internationally renowned artist conquered the frontiers of ceramics and created virtuosic works that went on to form their own contribution to the history of modern sculpture. With around 190 works from all her periods of creativity, the Mannheim architect Klaus Freiberger was able to compile a collection unmatched anywhere else in the world. In honor of its foundation at the Neue Sammlung, the impressive oeuvre of Beate Kuhn is now being presented for the first time in this comprehensive publication.

Six Vessantara Jataka picture scrolls published in full length for the very first time In depth essays explore a contemporary multimedia celebration of an ancient Buddhist text

The Vessantara Jataka is the tale of Buddha’s last life, before he was reborn as the historical Buddha 2,500 years ago. In this earlier existence as Prince Vessantara he demonstrated evidence of the highest virtue that constitutes an enlightened man: generosity. Vessantara gave away everything dear to him - in the climactic scene of the story, even his wife and children. In North-East Thailand the Vessantara tale is celebrated annually as Bun Phra Wet. Pha Phra Wet - ‘Vessantara cloths’ - form the visual framework for this festival; they are hand-painted scrolls, which can reach lengths of up to one hundred meters. Devotion presents, for the very first time, a selection of six full-length Vessantara scrolls and explores a contemporary multimedia celebration of an ancient Buddhist text.

The publication Beneath the Skin provides an overview of the last ten years of work by the Swiss artist Corina Staubli (b. 1959). It shows the altercation in the tension between exterior and interior worlds and the ambivalence of beauty, the beguiling, the sinister and even the unfathomable. With diverse media - be it porcelain, latex, painting or digital collage - the artist directs a dialogue of opposing sides. The question she always poses is ‘how does the clandestine and the unconscious reveal itself in something that is manifest’ - and, vice versa, ‘how does the external view reveal the internal view’? The book itself is sure to arouse intrigue, as it features a nylon sculpture on the cover!

With 70 works from 2003 to 2017 by the Japanese ceramic artist Shozo Michikawa (b. 1953) Shozo Michikawa’s work is highly sought after throughout the world. The LACMA Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, University of Oxford; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Qinglingsi Temple, Xi’an and Shimada City Museum are among the institutions that have acquired his work

Torsion and tension are characteristic of the vessels created by the exceptional Japanese ceramicist Shozo Michikawa (b. 1953), whose works are reminiscent of rock strata and lava flows. Michikawa is known for his unique technique, for turning edgy, dynamic sculptures on the potter’s wheel. First he cuts and scores a solid block of clay before he carves out the interior hollow through pressing and turning with a rod and his hands. Natural-looking surfaces emerge, just as geological forces formed the earth’s surface - an irrepressible energy from the inside out. With a selection of works from the last fifteen years, Shozo Michikawa introduces the first comprehensive book on work, which has attracted attention across the globe.

Inspired by antiquity, Norwegian folk art and Japonisme, Norwegian Gerhard Munthe was one of the most ground-breaking and innovative artists in the late 1800s, active as a designer in the fields of tapestries, carpets, furniture, stained glass, silver, porcelain, wallpaper, wrought iron, book bindings, fonts and interior decoration

Gerhard Munthe (1849-1929) is one of the most unique and important artists within the art nouveau movement and a significant contributor to its international diversity. His radical, abstract style based partly on old Norwegian folk art is today considered a precursor of twentieth-century modernism. Among Munthe’s greatest achievements are his countless room decorations, of which the Holmenkollen Turisthotell (1896-1898) in Oslo and Håkonshallen (1910-1915) in Bergen are the most significant. A series of illustrations of old Norwegian ballads and fairy tales made in 18921893 became the basis for a renewal of the decorative arts in Scandinavia, notably in the weaving industry. Munthe’s work as a designer covers most fields within the decorative arts: tapestries, carpets, furniture, stained glass, silver, porcelain, wallpaper, wrought iron, book bindings, fonts and ex libris.

New insights into early Christian archeology and art. Previously unpublished material from the Vatican Library, covering Jewish, pagan and Christian history Never before published details about Roman gold-glass, covering artifacts relating to Jewish and Christian history in Rome

The Wilshere Collection offers a remarkable insight into one Englishman’s enthusiasm for the early Christian church. A wealthy landowner traveling frequently to Italy, Charles Wilshere (1814-1906) saw it as his mission to acquaint the British with the then brand-new subject of early Christian archeology and art. Newly discovered documentation, including correspondence held at the Vatican Library and the Biblioteca San Luigi, Posilippo, recount Wilshere’s acquisition of a remarkable collection of early Christian, Jewish and pagan gold-glass, sarcophagi and inscriptions, shipped to England for public display. Previously unpublished evidence presents the reader with intriguing new information about the provenance of the collection. In addition to this, recent scientific analysis of the objects, now in the collections of the Ashmolean Museum, allows major new insights, notably into the origin of gold-glass and its use in fourth-century Rome.

Designed to be put up outdoors, posters are part of the public sphere. In the best examples, their visual message not only serves an advertising purpose, but also has artistic merit in itself. Today, given the huge variety of advertising media, ranging from trendy neon signs to large screen displays in cities, posters on hoardings and billboards are few and far between. However, no matter whether produced in large quantities using offset printing or as single copies, posters still have the potential to be relevant to our lives. They share a commonality with books, as a printed medium in a digital world. It is a great honor for Verlag Kettler as an art book publisher to be responsible for the publication of 100 Beste Plakate starting in 2017, and to collaborate on the yearbooks, which are an extension of the competition in printed form. The first ever overview of the impressive Marzona collection in all its diversity

Beginning in the 1960s, the German-Italian gallerist and publisher Edigio Marzona has created one of the largest and most significant art collections on twentieth-century avant-garde movements that includes works of conceptual art, minimal art and arte povera from America and Europe. It has been housed at Staatliche Museen zu Berlin since 2002. Based on an exhibition series hosted by the Hamburger Bahnhof contemporary art museum in Berlin over a period of two and a half years, the book is the first ever overview of the collection in all its diversity. Its chapters are headed by the letters of the alphabet, and address representative ideas, individual positions, significant historical exhibitions and artistic genres of the 1960s and ‘70s. The first chapter, for instance, offers insights into the Italian ‘Arte Povera’ movement, while chapter ‘Handlung’ (‘action’) discusses the performative aspects of art; and the part of the book entitled ‘Kubus’ (‘cube’) focuses on geometrical forms in minimalism. All chapters are prefaced by short texts, such as the seminal essay Escape Attempts by the American curator and critic Lucy Lippard. With its wealth of material and key works, texts and documents, this book is a new and essential work of reference.

●

The Wilhelm-Hack-Museum has put on an exhibition showing early works by Alfred Kubin, alongside outstanding examples of contemporary art Featured works by: Thomas Feuerstein, Alfred Kubin, Henrique Oliveira, Hans Op de Beeck, Markus Schinwald, Stéphane Thidet and others

With his mythical depictions of demons and fabulous creatures, the Austrian graphic artist and illustrator Alfred Kubin (1877-1959) was an early representative of surrealism. Like other followers of this early 20th century movement, he rejected purely rational behavior and explored the depths of the unconscious instead. In 1909, he published his novel The Other Side, (Die andere Seite) a classic example of the fantastic genre that tells a cryptically absurd story of a dream kingdom in decline, replete with references to metaphysics and gnostic philosophy. Borrowing the novel’s title, the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum has put on an exhibition showing early works by Alfred Kubin alongside outstanding examples of contemporary art. The exhibition is designed in a way that aims to stimulate the imagination, and to highlight hints of surrealism in international contemporary artworks.

Catalogues the works of an interdisciplinary association of artists and architects, who aspired to synthesize the fine and applied arts in socialist Yugoslavia in the 1950s A selection of representative works and collaborative projects, in conjunction with an exhibition, show the interdisciplinary outlook of the EXAT-51 group, exploring their attempt to position their ideals in everyday life under socialist rule

In Autumn 2017, Kunstmuseen Krefeld took a fresh look at the legacy of the Bauhaus in the context of the former Eastern Bloc in the postwar period. With exhibitions in the two villas by Mies van der Rohe and a focus on ‘Ideology, Abstraction and Architecture’, Kunstmuseen Krefeld carried out pioneering work in reappraising a unique artistic movement and raising public awareness. By presenting a selection of representative works and collaborative projects, the exhibition and book show the interdisciplinary outlook of the EXAT-51 group and their attempt to position their ideals in everyday life under socialist rule. They designed pavilions for World’s Fairs as well as trade fairs, furniture, tapestries, magazines, objects, sculptures and animated films. In addition, this volume contains numerous essays, shedding light on the artistic statements in view of the sociopolitical context in Yugoslavia in the 1950s and 1960s, and many primary sources. This is the first time, this movement and its positions have been scientifically researched.

With rare and unpublished photographs, reproductions and texts, this is the new essential Yang Jiechang overview, published on the occasion of the artist’s 60th birthday

Yang Jiechang was born in 1956. He belongs to the so-called second generation of contemporary artists in China, growing up during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). The beginning of his artistic career coincided with China’s political opening in the late 1970s and 1980s. Yang’s journey from the cultural periphery to the cultural center of Western Europe is reflected in his artistic career. For him personally, Yang describes this period as one of retreat into introspection and reinvention of identity. His series Hundred Layers of Ink, large monochrome black ink paintings, reveal this position. In the late 1990s, figurative paintings and videos superseded Yang’s monochrome meditative inks. His works now refers to critical subjects and actual events. With rare and unpublished photographs, reproductions and texts, this is the new essential Yang Jiechang overview, published on the occasion of the artist’s 60th birthday. Printed on textured paper that resembles the artist’s ink paintings, and complete with a separate fan folded booklet with details of his large-sized works, the publication is a unique and visually appealing artist’s book.

26 ART

An overview of the work of Federico Herrero, one of Latin America’s most eminent contemporary artists Herrero’s landscape paintings always aim to be down-to-earth; they involve the people who inhabit the areas that inspire him, which are often impoverished

Federico Herrero is one of Latin America’s most eminent contemporary artists. In 2001, at the age of only twenty, he won the award for best young artist at the Venice Biennale curated by Harald Szeemann. His hometown of San José is an important point of reference for him and serves as a kind of laboratory for his explorations of the world. Despite being firmly anchored in the international art scene, he still lives and works in his native environment. Herrero paints abstract and colorful paintings exclusively of landscapes. He sometimes uses canvasses in extremely large formats, but also creates works in the public sphere. Whether painting high-rise façades in São Paulo, bridge piers in Columbia or fishermen’s huts in Basel, he always engages in a productive dialogue with architecture. His paintings are not meant to be elitist but part of everyday life. He aims to get involved, often selecting deprived areas and inviting local young people to take part in his work. His art is not designed to change society, but to provide opportunities for critical perception.

Salwa Aleryani

Intending Probability Künstlerhaus Bethanien ●

Part of an ongoing series collecting the work of young artists on residency in Berlin, from a diverse range of countries from Latin America to the Middle East

The sculptures and installations by Salwa Aleryani, born 1982 in Yemen, prompt a vast range of associations in the viewer. Her works are evocative of arte povera, then again of American minimal art, but defy any categorization. The artist places strong emphasis on the material that is of fundamental importance to her. In general, she uses basic everyday materials and devices available in any hardware store, thus conjuring up an aura of domestic DIY. Although the shapes she creates remain essentially abstract, they nevertheless trigger memories of streets, buildings, cities - situations we encounter in public places day in, day out. By intentionally giving her works an imperfect, unfinished look, Aleryani refers to the production process and at the same time to the decay of all things. Does the result satisfy expectations, will it last? Even if her works inevitably seem reminiscent of the war-ridden towns of her native country, this is merely suggested; it never becomes specific. Aleryani provides no direct clues and ultimately creates universally valid images.

Rocha Pitta’s performative installations at Künstlerhaus Bethanien and in the underground stations allow him to interact with the public. Rocca Pitta works with a mocking sense of humor presenting trophies that are made of plastic bags or concrete instead of gold, silver or bronze, inviting visitors to take along potatoes as victory trophies. His work deconstructs the concept of victory and the hierarchy of winners and losers, creating a dense network of historical references going back to Ancient Greece and asking fundamental questions about the meaning of gestures, the community and its value.

Developed by women artists born in Arab countries, this exhibition presents the concept of cultural boundaries, and the crossing of those boundaries, from their own perspective, rather than as a westernized distillation Focuses on the diversity of the women’s artistic styles, this catalogue devotes ample space to their particular biographical and national details

Contemporary art production in Arab countries still remains largely unexplored. Often general and trite assumptions are made distinguishing between East and West, Arabic-Islamic and WesternChristian civilization, without addressing each culture’s specific characteristics in appropriate ways. Aware of the fact that the reception of art from these countries calls for a new approach, the museum for contemporary art, Marta in Herford, Germany, has invited nine female artists from Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iran and Iraq to share their work. They all came to the West as university students or exiles, and most of them never returned to their homes. This exhibition focuses on their works of art and devotes ample space to the particular biographical and national details in the lives of these women. The diversity of their artistic styles links many different aspects, reflecting on the concept of cultural boundaries, and the crossing of those boundaries, as well as the on-going conflicts and upheaval in their home countries.

The Peter Paul Rubens Atlas

The Great Atlas of the Old Flemish Masters Gunter Hauspie, Arnout Balis ● ●

●

Filled with anecdotal peculiarities on the social and cultural context in which Rubens lived Includes practical routes that help readers discover for themselves: city walks, car routes, museum visits, etc. The Great Atlas of the Old Flemish Masters will be a three-part compendium presenting the three most globally influential Old Flemish Masters: The Peter Paul Rubens Atlas (2018), The Van Eyck Atlas (2019), The Bruegel Atlas (2019)

This is the first title in a new prestigious cultural tourism project by Lannoo Publishers. The Peter Paul Rubens Atlas illustrates the life of Rubens on a timeline: important dates and periods in the life of the Old Master are indicated and elaborated on in the main part of the book through text, images and maps. One of those maps could for example show Peter Paul Rubens’ stay in Italy or his diplomatic journeys, but it could also take the reader on a city walk through Antwerp, visiting places that are linked to Rubens and his work. The maps are designed to reflect the age in which the artist lived. More than striving for artistic comprehensiveness in terms of art history, these atlases are intended to reflect the context in which the artists lived, worked and flourished.

A detailed look at the details of the impressive series of paintings known as Jacob and His Twelve Sons by seventeenth-century master Francisco de Zurbarán

The impressive series of paintings known as “Jacob and His Twelve Sons” portrays thirteen largerthan-life-size figures by Spanish master Francisco de Zurbarán (1598-1664). Painted between 1640 and 1644, the series depicts chapter 49 of the Book of Genesis and the moment of Jacob’s deathbed blessings to his sons, who would go on to found the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Brought to England in the eighteenth century, the works form part of the Auckland Castle Trust, which today holds one of the most significant public collections of the artist’s work outside Spain. Since 2016, “Jacob and His Twelve Sons” has been on extended loan in order to undergo a thorough technical study. This publication will chronicle the scientific analysis and also provide focused art historical studies of the works. Essays will cover the iconography of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, the history of the canvases, and Zurbarán’s artistic practices and visual sources. With this comprehensive and varied approach, the book will constitute the most extensive contribution to the scholarship on one of the most ambitious series by this Golden Age master.

Previously announced as Arts of Florence (ISBN: 9788874613519)

Palazzo Strozzi hosts an extraordinary exhibition dedicated to Florentine art of the latter 1500s, the last act of a trilogy dedicated to 16th-century art in Florence, which began with Bronzino in 2010 and Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino in 2014. The Cinquecento in Florence confronts the development of Florentine art in the second half of the century through paintings and sculptures by artists including Andrea del Sarto, Bronzino, Pontormo, Giorgio Vasari, Giambologna, Bartolomeo Ammannati and Santi di Tito. The exhibition and this accompanying catalogue also provides the opportunity to restore important works of art and to construct a wide network of collaboration between museums, cultural institutions and Florentine and Tuscan sites. The result is a celebration of an exceptional cultural epoch of intellectual inspiration marked by the Council of Trent during the Counter-Reformation, and by Francesco I de’Medici, one of the most brilliant representatives of courtly patronage in Europe.

The Monarch of the Glen Christopher Baker ●

Explores the fascinating and complicated history of the iconic painting, The Monarch of the Glen, and contributes to the debates it continues to stimulate

The Monarch of the Glen by Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873) is one of the most celebrated paintings of the nineteenth century. The National Galleries of Scotland acquired it in 2017. In this new book, the first to focus in detail on this iconic picture, Christopher Baker explores its complex and fascinating history. He places Landseer’s work in the context of the artist’s meteoric career, considers the circumstances of its high-profile commission and its extraordinary subsequent reputation. When so much Victorian art fell out of fashion, Landseer’s Monarch took on a new role as marketing image, bringing it global recognition. It also inspired the work of many other artists, ranging from Sir Bernard Partridge and Ronald Searle to Sir Peter Blake and Peter Saville. Today the picture has an intriguing status, being seen by some as a splendid celebration of Scotland’s natural wonders and by others as an archaic trophy. This publication will make a significant contribution to the debates that it continues to stimulate.

Revealing an alternative story of modern Scottish art, A New Era examines the most experimental work of Scottish artists during the first half of the 20th century. It challenges the accepted view of the dominance of the Scottish Colourists and uncovers the hitherto little-known progressive Scottish art world. Through these works, we can see the commitment of Scottish artists to the progress of art through their engagement and interpretation of the great movements of European modern art, from Fauvism and Expressionism, to Cubism, Art Deco, abstraction and Surrealism, among others. Looking at the most advanced work of high-profile artists such as William Gillies and Stanley Cursiter, and lesser-known talents, like Tom Pow and Edwin G. Lucas, A New Era takes its name from the group established in Edinburgh in 1939 to show surreal and abstract work by its members.

A new look at work by Caravaggio, one of the most famous and fascinating artists of all time

Caravaggio’s astonishingly naturalistic and provocative Cupid Victorious hung in the palace of a famous family at the heart of seventeenth-century Rome. Helen Langdon explores how the artist, famed for his originality, created a balance between a suggestion of his own world - a world of lively and rowdy street life - and a complex and ambiguous response to both ancient and Renaissance art and literature. Langdon also looks at the challenge the painting threw out to contemporary painters, whose world was characterized by extreme and bitter rivalries; often they reject his irony, sometimes embellish the painting’s sexuality, and at other times convey an opposing sense of the harmony of the arts. For the first time in book form, a selection of historical scenes by Jan Steen17th century paintings from the Dutch Golden Age

Jan Steen, one of the most popular painters of the Dutch Golden Age, is known for his humorous depictions of dissolute households, tavern interiors, quacksalvers and lovesick young women. He was unrivalled in poking fun at every conceivable human weakness and vice. A lesser known fact is that he also painted historical scenes: pieces based on episodes from the Bible, apocryphal writings and mythology - stories full of excitement, drama and passion. As with his genre pieces, Steen devoted a great deal of attention in his history paintings to the interaction between the figures, and was keenly aware of the satirical possibilities in every story. In contrast with his later image, Jan Steen was a versatile and ambitious artist with a profound knowledge of art history and literature: knowledge that comes to the fore in his history pieces. This richly illustrated publication, written by experts on Jan Steen, focuses on a little-known part of the artist’s oeuvre.

Ferdinand Bol and Govert Flinck New Research

Edited by Stephanie S. Dickey ●

Sixteen essays exploring the work of two of 17th-century Amsterdam’s most ambitious painters, Govert Flinck and Ferdinand Bol

This book presents sixteen essays exploring the work of two of 17th-century Amsterdam’s most ambitious painters, Govert Flinck and Ferdinand Bol. Museum curators, academic art historians, and conservation scientists from six different countries come together to investigate form, content, and context from a variety of perspectives. Eric Jan Slujter examines how changing patterns of patronage contributed to both artists’ stylistic evolution. Hilbert Lootsma traces the rise and fall of their critical fortunes from their own time until today. Ann Jensen Adams situates their work in the shifting market for portraiture. Jasper Hillegers explores the origins of Flinck’s career in the Leeuwarden studio of Lambert Jacobsz. Other authors present contextual and technical analyses of individual paintings. Portrait identities are revealed, painterly tricks uncovered, and both artists are shown to be influential teachers and members of an intellectual community in which art and theater were closely linked. Many of these essays originated at an international conference held in preparation for the exhibition, Govert Flinck and Ferdinand Bol. Together, they shed new light on the methods and motivations of two artists who began as Rembrandt’s acolytes but soon became his rivals.

This study establishes his place and defining role in the history and development of contemporary Chinese calligraphy. Foremost among his many contributions is the integration of acrylic color with the traditional medium of brush and ink, forging a synthesis of the painterly and the gestural that has truly revolutionized the practice of Chinese calligraphy. Situating this discussion in the context of the global cultural economy, it frames an understanding of contemporary art, which can no longer be defined simply within the borders of a national cultural provenance.

T’Ang Haywen - Diptychs Various authors ●

The first comprehensive study of the Diptychs of the contemporary painter T’ang Haywen

T’ang Haywen (1927-1991) belongs to the second generation of Chinese artists who settled in Paris after WWII. With Zao Wou-Ki (1920-2013) and Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014) he is considered as the inventor of a new pictural language between abstraction and figuration, between East and West. But T’ang is known for his detachment from all materialistic concerns leading to his early return to the medium of ink. Indeed in the late 1960s T’ang started to paint in recurring formats and adopted his famous diptych format for which he is now recognized. Indeed, no other painter has systematically used the diptych format as T’ang did. This format, obtained by the juxtaposition of two sheets separated by a line, creates a window, a space of freedom for the most direct and immediate expression of his feelings. This process is embodied in poetic transpositions worthy of the greatest creators of the 20th century. ISBN: 9791095715122 Mare & Martin 12.75 x 10.25in. 250pp., 180 col. Celebrates the coming together in early 2018 of two of Haarlem’s premier galleries, the Frans Hals Museum and De Hallen Haarlem

The Frans Hals Museum has attracted interest since it opened in 1913. Its collection of Haarlem Old Masters of the Golden Age, including the world’s largest collection of paintings by Frans Hals, is unique. The collection reflects the radical changes that painting underwent in the early seventeenth century, with Haarlem providing fertile soil for a new expression of art to flourish. In the same way De Hallen Haarlem provides a platform for innovations in modern and contemporary art, positioning itself unequivocally as the champion of a living culture. In early 2018 the Frans Hals Museum and De Hallen Haarlem, which already operate as a single organization behind the scenes, will become one museum under the name Frans Hals Museum. Each location will offer a new and distinctive programme of exhibitions in which traditional and contemporary art are shown side by side. The latest title in Scala’s Director’s Choice series celebrates the coming together of these two art institutions, with a selection of works which speak personally to the Director and reflect the synergy between the two collections.

Groundbreaking new research offers a contribution to the field of perception in contemporary art Accompanies an exhibition of the same name at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art (March 1 - June 3 2018)

Featuring sculptural, sound-based, and language-based artworks, this fascinating volume explores the experiential, psychological, and metaphorical implications of blindness and invisibility in recent American art. New research addresses the paradox of why and how numerous sighted and unsighted artists, normally considered to be ”visual artists” such as William Anastasi, Robert Morris, Joseph Grigely, and Lorna Simpson, have challenged the primacy of vision as a bearer of perceptual authority. Their work explores what resides on the other side of the visual field, prompting audiences to reflect upon the significance of what we cannot see, whether by choice, habit, or physiological limitations, in the world around us. In so doing, they point to ways of knowing beyond what can be observed with the eyes, as well as to the invisible forces (societal, political, cultural) that govern our own frameworks of experience.

Breath

Een Ontmoeting Tussen Woord en Beeld Katrin Dekoninck & Steven Van Der Heyden Katrin Dekoninck is an all-round artist, showing mankind in raw honesty and lonely separation. Though the focus of this book is her life-sized sculptures in clay, she is also skilled in drawing, painting and traditional (non-computer generated) animation. Her technical strength makes her images breathe. Serenely and with simplicity, she shapes her universe of searching people. Themes such as ‘identity’ and ‘aging’ link her oeuvre to the poetry of Steven Van Der Heyden. With words, he tries to find a way to make connections, to start a dialogue. His poems were written in interaction with Katrin’s sculptures. Together they make an organic unity of words and images. It is a fascinating encounter artfully captured through the lens of photographer Stef De Belder.

The Picture of Dorya Glenn Julie O’yang & Filip Naudts

A photographer stalks a writer after severely transforming and altering her portrait. Like a paparazzo he spies on her and observes her closely and intimately. He captures every single detail of her daily life through his lens while she writes the sci-fi story that is published in this book. However, he especially wants to find out how image manipulation affects her and her psyche, with fatal consequences. Next to the photographer, Dorya Glenn is the main protagonist in the sci-fi story. But who is she? The Picture of Dorya Glenn is collaboration between photographer Filip Naudts and the Dutch-Chinese writer/visual artist Julie O’yang. It is a photographic romance noir, a dark surrealistic sci-fi photo novel in which the authors play the main characters: Julie in the shape of the extra-terrestrial Dorya Glenn, and Filip as himself.

Hilde Van de Walle & Patricia De Corte Hilde Van de Walle (b.1957) is a multi-disciplinary artist. In a period of 30 years she created a vast and highly appreciated oeuvre consisting of graphic art, paintings, ceramics and monumental bronzes. She often explores the mystery behind the human facade. As an artist she wants to achieve maximum expression with a minimal number of visual clues. Her images are actions frozen in time. It is the task of the spectator to fill in the preceding action or imagine the continuation of the movement. Her imagery is wilful; the artist dislocates normal anatomy and forces it into a new shape. Parts of the body are deliberately eliminated to come to the purest expression. The subdued charisma of the figures stimulates a dialogue with the environment and the spectator. The residual space between the images is no blank space, but acts as a sound box that amplifies the expression, capturing the intangible in an image remains Hilde’s passionate ambition.

ISBN: 9789385360299 Mapin Publishing 10 x 11.5in. 168pp., 150 col. Available $65.00/CDN$88.00 Hardcover

Traces, for the first time, the evolution of the artist through various motifs and media employed by the artist in her extensive, impressive repertoire

Spanning a wide spectrum of creative constructs emerging from varied ideations and genres, Rini Dhumal’s art is rooted in India’s culture and myth, coupled with her international exposure and imaginative spirit. A flexibility of approach adds an organic energy and innate beauty to Rini’s art. With its focus on the inner feminine psyche, it explores the potential and challenges offered by different media, from two or three-dimensional work in clay or bronze, relief or graphic art. In a fine assimilation of abstraction, myth, landscape and conceptualization, her art is threaded with the face, form and figuration of the ‘goddess’ in various incarnations of Rini’s own design. Her work also makes imaginative use of traditional Indian iconography - birds, animals and floral motifs all reminiscent of religious art, but re-purposed to create a new vocabulary of form and meaning. Rini’s enduring art and aesthetics, with their distinct feel and flow, speak for a unique assimilation of the personal and universal. This book is an attempt to understand and appreciate an exceptionally impressive and extensively varied repertoire.

Lessons from Hell

Printing and Punishment in India Christopher Pinney ● ●

Connects popular prints with political history and current Indian politics Vividly documents the fascination and repulsion provoked by images of punishment

Documenting the growth of printed images of punishments in hell in 19th- and 20th-century India, this book explores what happens when new technologies of image reproduction collide with very deep cultural traditions. It traces the sources of the iconography and formal visual structures that found new expression in late 19th-century chromolithographs showing deeds and their punishments. These prints, often known as karni bharni, remain part of a living tradition, being still commercially produced by several presses. Jain iconography provided one of the routes to visualizing the punishments listed in the Garuda Purana within a visual grid established by gyan chaupar or the “chess of knowledge”. Style and form remained in many respects remarkably stable over the last century and a half but the political concerns of the genre changed from a vegetarian code reinforcing conventional high-caste Hindu patriarchy and morality to a concern with the obligations of the citizen. A parallel genre of Good Habits and Bad Habits (together with educational charts on duties to village and nation) reflected an Emergency-era co-option of karni bharni’s key idioms in the interests of the state. Twenty-firstcentury pastiches satirize the ideological positions in these popular images.

The volume chronicles legendary tiger mothers and male tigers of the past decade, as well as their tales of survival, complemented by exquisite images by wildlife photographer Shivang Mehta, who has spent thousands of hours on the field. A one-of-a-kind book which examines in great detail all aspects of life in Kumaon - from ethnography to the environment, and the history, crafts and architecture that characterize the area

The untamed beauty of the Himalayas immediately captures our collective imagination with visions of serenity, natural splendor and mysticism. But these mountains also dictate the lives of those who live by its laws - the resilient hill dwellers, or paharis, whose work and lives are shaped by their surroundings. In the Shadow of the Devi: Kumaon details the legacy of a land, a people and a craft deeply intertwined with its environment. Manju Kak looks at this enigmatic land of Kumaon through the prism of woodcraft, unique in its aesthetic in this part of India, documenting the styles, influences and techniques used by the craftsmen of Uttarakhand, as well as Kumaoni artisans’ worldview and beliefs. In addition, this book is an important document of the life of paharis, as it also discusses communities, forest policy and the status of women, analyzing and unraveling facets of hill life that made Kumaon’s claim for statehood so unique. The book is beautifully complemented with photographs by award-winning Kumaoni photographer Anup Sah, among others. It is also a visual delight for those who have an interest in the region.

Manaku of Guler

The Life and Work of Another Great Indian Painter From a Small Hill State B. N. Goswamy ●

Brings together two uncommonly gifted individuals: an 18th century Indian painter and a 21st century art historian

This work centers upon Manaku of Guler - older brother of the greatly celebrated Nainsukh reconstructing whatever little is known of his life, but following closely his artistic journey. Manaku came from an obscure little town in the hills of northern India - home to his singularly talented family - and yet his vision knew almost no limits. Endowed with imagination and painterly skills, this man was capable of painting giant rings of time upon timeless waters, envisioning the world of gods and demons, littered with cosmic battles and earthly triumphs. At least three great series were painted by Manaku: the Siege of Lanka which took forward the narrative of the Ramayana from the point where his father, the gifted Pandit Seu, had left it; the Gita Govinda and the Bhagavata Purana. Every single folio that has survived and is at present accessible - the number comes close to five hundred - from these series finds a place in this uncommonly rich volume. For the second time - Nainsukh of Guler was the first (also published by Niyogi Books) - Professor Goswamy looks here at the entire body of work of a great Indian artist from the past.

Living Hinduism

Scriptures. Philosophy. Practices Samarpan ● ● ●

Highlights the scriptures, philosophy and practice of living Encapsulates the essence of Hinduism A product of long years of studying, learning and practicing

Hinduism is neither an organized religion nor a proselytizing one. It is often described as a way of life, which gently nudges its followers - through its scriptures, mythologies, rituals, and practices - to question deeply, live fully, and grow wholesomely in compassion and universal acceptance. Hinduism believes whatever inspires one to stay truly unselfish, be it a vocation, an ideology, or a faith, can lead one towards greater self-realization and ultimate freedom. Living Hinduism by Samarpan encapsulates this essence of Hinduism in a language that can be understood and appreciated by all, especially a younger generation in an age of strident opinions and changing values. Pahari paintings from the Horst Metzger collection, now in Museum Rietberg Zurich, are outstanding works by Indian masters who worked in the sub-Himalayan region between 1680 and 1850. This lavishly illustrated catalog of the works, which owes itself to a new collaboration between Prof. B.N. Goswamy and Dr Eberhard Fischer, is filled both with scholarly authority and poetic utterance. The passion with which Horst Metzger assembled this distinguished collection is matched by the text, for it throws open windows to a world of reflection and delight, close observation and soaring imagination. The two scholars have authored Pahari Masters: Court Painters of Northern India (1980) which accompanied one of the most celebrated and groundbreaking exhibitions in the field. Three decades later (2011), they were together again - along with Dr Milo Beach - editing and writing for the monumental, two-volume, Masters of Indian Painting: 1100-1900 which served as a guide to another path-breaking exhibition, shown at the Museum Rietberg Zurich and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Rajput Arms and Armour

The Rathores and Their Armoury at Jodhpur Fort Robert Elgood ●

●

Foreword by the 37th Custodian of Marwar-Jodhpur, His Highness Maharaja Gaj Singhji Sahib Bahadur II of Jodhpur-Marwar The first of its kind to focus on their arms and armor

For political and more recently commercial reasons the cultural history of the subcontinent has been largely expressed through the Mughal experience of India. This book reclaims the Hindu contribution to the military culture of the Mughal period. The Rajputs were very closely aligned to the Mughals from the reign of Akbar in the sixteenth century but they retained their own distinctive values. The armory at Mehrangarh helps us to enter an unfamiliar world. A tradition of courage and selfsacrifice was conserved in music and poetry, an ideology so extreme that scholars have struggled to fully understand its existence. This radical book challenges arms and armor orthodoxy and is essential reading for scholars, collectors and dealers interested in India and its wider culture.

Lavishly illustrated, this is the first major work chronicling the biggest producers of block-printed cloth from India to Siam

House of Maskati presents a unique textile legacy, bringing together pan-Asian cultural themes and shifting patterns of trade over five generations and 160 years. The story begins in 1856, when Abdul Tyeb Maskati started a small business exporting blockprinted cloth from India to Siam (as Thailand was then known). Before long, the cloth was being made to order, with Indian block-makers carving intricate designs especially for the Siamese market. Known as saudagiri in India and pha lai in Siam, this unique art form blends South Asian and Southeast Asian artistry and design. After consolidating his initial legacy, the descendants of Abdul Tyeb Maskati responded to diminishing opportunities in the pha lai market by diversifying their trade networks, products, and expertise. Under the leadership of his grandson, Abdultyeb Maskati (pictured on the cover), the family firm was transformed and extended its reach as far afield as Japan. Later still, after years of prudence under challenging political circumstances across the region, the business was transformed once more. Today, it continues with his great great grandsons at the helm and is run as two separate entities in India and Thailand - a geographical legacy of his initial idea to ship textiles from India to Siam 160 years ago.

Roads of Eastern Europe

Cars, Trucks, Buses and Trains: The Legendary Vehicles of the Eastern Bloc Klaus Schameitat ●

A rich variety of vehicles from the Eastern Bloc

The former Eastern Bloc is often perceived as a gray region with prefabricated buildings, and its four-wheeled products are usually compared to shoe boxes. Klaus Schameitat decided to abolish these prejudices by presenting us with the exceptional variety of vehicles developed behind the Iron Curtain, some of which still exist today. The result of 40 years of research, he not only traveled to the former GDR, but he also visited almost all the countries of the Eastern Bloc. Big, American-looking sedans come across rear-engined air-cooled curiosities, monstrous transport vehicles dream of a better life on a scrapyard, and a Wartburg races against a Zuk van - but not on the road: both vehicles were converted into draisines. In this beautiful photo book, the East is represented as an unusual, colorful, elegant, and sometimes simply astonishing region. The highlights in this book include more than 800 documentary photos, mostly of everyday cars, concise model descriptions, a wide variety of cars, trucks, buses and trains of all kinds from more than 60 manufacturers, photographed in 20 Eastern European countries, classified by country, with informative maps and introductory texts. Appendices include abbreviations and the main products of the manufacturers.

Siam and World War I An International History Stefan Hell ●

A study on the part Thailand, then ‘Siam’, played in WW1, told through personal stories

100 years ago Siam declared war on Germany. In the early morning hours of 22 July 1917, army units and gendarmerie called the roughly 200 completely unsuspecting German and Austro-Hungarian men in Bangkok out of their beds, presented them with the declaration of war and went on to arrest them. At the same time, marine units boarded the nine ocean going German ships anchored on the river, capturing what was considered by all to be the greatest prize. With these events began Siam’s 17 months at war with two European powers. The story of how this period unfolded in Siam and in Europe is at the heart of this book. It is a complex tale interweaving political, diplomatic, military, cultural and social history. Siam’s participation in World War I was the single most important international event for contemporaries in the kingdom, its symbolism unmatched by any other occurrence of the times. The book is the first-ever extensively researched study of Siam and World War I in all its facets. The legacy of the events a century ago is remarkably tangible even today, and the book connects the reader with this legacy.

114 gemstone animals by master engravers Gerd and Patrick Dreher - mostly made from a single gemstone Features essays on techniques and materials by renowned authors With new and detailed photographs allowing never before seen aspects of the beautiful gemstone carvings

Engravers Gerd and Patrick Dreher are famous the world over for their masterly animal figures, each of which is cut from a single gemstone. In the early twentieth century, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather all cut gemstones for Fabergé - mostly agate but also ruby, obsidian, aquamarine, citrine and rock crystal. Today, creations are still being meticulously made by hand using traditional techniques. The realistic miniature forms of mice, snails, toads, monkeys and hippos are designed by the two artists in multilayered and colored gemstones so that, for example, the faces, palms of the hand or soles of the feet shine in an iridescent red-brown agate while the bodies are worked in the glossy deep black part of the stone. These unique engravings are today some of the rarest examples of the highest quality in craftsmanship, and represent fascination of the highest cultural degree in a world of increasing globalization.

The second provides a series of case studies dedicated to the more interesting themes regarding the reproduction in porcelain of great ancient sculptures, as well as some more significant works realized by the manufactory, like the Tempietto of Cortona or the great Fireplace. The book concludes with a series of entries elaborating on the 17 works that were featured in the exhibition.

1,500 hitherto unpublished design drawings A broad selection of pieces in the celebrated millefiori technique An essential reference work for all connoisseurs of Murano glass

A creative exchange with artists such as the painter Guido Cadorin or the ceramicist and sculptor Hans Stoltenberg-Lerche brought the second generation Toso Brothers to the forefront of Murano glass manufactories at the beginning of the twentieth century. After the Second World War Ermanno Toso and Pollio Perelda were among the most famous designers and continued the production of lavish series in glass, complemented from the 1950s onwards with high-quality one-offs executed mainly in the celebrated millefiori technique. This decoration consists of a multitude of tiny colored discs, known as murrini, which are produced by melting, cooling and cutting bundled canes of glass to form a cross-section pattern. Wellinformed texts, hitherto unpublished sketches and archive photos make Fratelli Toso Murano an essential reference work for all connoisseurs of glass.

The first comprehensive and lavishly illustrated monograph in English on the breathtaking oeuvre in wood by the Norwegian jewelry artist Liv Blåvarp Featuring 55 works from 2002 to 2017

Maple, birch, walnut, lemonwood and palisander are just a few of the woods from which Liv Blåvarp (b. 1956) creates exceptional one-off jewelry pieces. The rigidity or softness of the wood plays just as much of an important role in the selection process as its structure or texture. The works are comprised of numerous single elements, which fuse together to become sculptural volumes tactile creations that come alive when touched. Yet at the same time Blåvarp’s expressive and colorful pieces remain flexible and wearable. Their forms are not clearly defined; associations to organic growth, animals and plants, light and shade, water and waves all come to mind. With around 55 works from 2002 to 2017 Liv Blåvarp presents the first comprehensive review of her creative output.

Madame Tricot Delicatessen

Dominique Kaehler Schweizer ●

A textile art book brimming with wit and humor

With her unique artistic installations, Madame Tricot - real name Dominique Kaehler Schweizer displaces the viewer into an illusory world of knitted delicacies. Her smokehouses, refrigerators, counters of sausage and cheese, and platters of vegetables and desserts are full of wit and irony. The knitted human heads and anthropomorphic specimens, on the other hand, confront the viewer with the breaking of taboos and surreal allusions. The installation-like staging represents a balancing act of fine art and virtuosic craftsmanship, and draws on the Eat Art movement of the 1960s. The work of the Swiss artist thus repeatedly awakens associations with the work of Daniel Spoerri, Dieter Roth and Fischli/Weiss.

Christopher Dresser Textiles Harry Lyons ●

●

A significant collection of textile works from a prolific yet often-overlooked designer, whose influence is felt to this day Written by a renowned expert on Christopher Dresser

Dr Christopher Dresser is best remembered for his pioneering advances in design and associated technology. In the new industrial world of the nineteenth century, Dresser was the first designer to understand that machinery was a good servant but a poor master; he made it his business to understand how machines worked. His success gained him credibility. Dresser became a sought-after consultant to several textile manufacturers, most notably Barlow & Jones, Tootal, Warner & Sons, Turnbull & Stockdale, and Wardle, which allowed him to establish the largest design practice in Britain by 1870. However, Dresser is less celebrated in comparison to other designers of the era, such as William Morris, because Dresser was obliged to abandon this campaign to improve British taste due to an unexplained illness in the early 1880s. At the same time, Morris was expanding his business just as the Arts and Crafts movement was beginning to gain momentum. Despite being the first Victorian to address the decorative needs of all the population, there is a severe lack of appreciation for Dresser’s work - whose influence can be found in many textiles that we take for granted today. This book redresses that balance, giving Dresser the monograph he deserves.

Offers an overview of the design and production of lace and embroidery made by the Wiener Werkstätte between 1906 and 1930 With works by Carl Otto Czeschka, Josef Hoffmann, Dagobert Peche, Maria Likarz-Strauss, Mathilde Flögl, Hilde Jesser-Schmid, Felice Rix-Ueno, Vally Wieselthier and Fritzi Löw-Lazar

A rich inventory of previously unpublished documents boasting great artistic sophistication can be found in the Wiener Werkstätte archive in the MAK - Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art on the design and production of lace and embroidery produced there between 1906 and 1930. Together with the objects kept in the museum, they convey an authentic picture of the department’s extraordinary production. Around forty designers are known by name. The earliest pieces of embroidery, from 1906, derive from furniture upholstery belonging to the Wittgenstein family, while lace production did not begin until 1915 and consisted of braids and covers, also inserts for curtains and counterpanes. The book provides a great deal of new information on this hitherto little-known Wiener Werkstätte department, including artists’ sketches and designs, blueprints, bobbin lace patterns, sample portfolios in WW design, and historical black-and-white photographs of the original objects.

Ikebana: Inspired by Emotions Edited by Katrien Van Moerbeke

Just as painters create immortal pieces with their brushes, ikebana artists use nature’s palette to express themselves. Ikebana: Inspired by Emotions demonstrates the eloquence of ikebana and its power to capture and transfer emotions. Ikebana is sometimes accused of being hermetic; difficult to understand or appreciate for outsiders. It is claimed that it is an art which merely involves applying strict, imposed rules and that a lack of spontaneity and frivolity makes it a style of flower arranging that is difficult to enjoy. This beautiful new book demonstrates the opposite. Eight carefully selected black and white photos of strong, universal emotions are the source of inspiration for this publication. Many international artists interpret these visuals and translate them into designs that stir the senses and touch the heart. Ikebana: Inspired by Emotions shows how ikebana arrangements can pull at the heartstrings and evoke emotions that are recognizable to everyone. The Eternal Flower Koji Arai Koji Arai Koji Arai is one of those people who accidentally found their great ambition and passion in life. When he started working in a flower shop in São Paulo the main goal was to earn a living and improve his command of Portuguese. He could barely tell a rose from a tulip, let alone make a bouquet. As the shop did not spoon-feed him any instructions Arai learnt the art by stealing with his eyes. Ever since that first experience he has been obsessed with plants and the possibilities of flower design. After returning to Japan, he joined Dai-ichi Engei as floral designer and product developer. The collection of designs in this book, however, stands apart from his professional work. The Eternal Flower is his ode to flowers. In this book he wants to give a voice to the beauty of their colours, their enthralling eccentric shapes, their life, their death, their fragility and elegance and at the same time treasure them for eternity. Koji Arai puts his talent at the service of flowers, hoping to help disclose the fascinating aspects of flowers and plants that we often remain unaware of. This he does with great skill and bravura. The Banat of Timisoara A European Melting Pot Professor Victor Neumann ● ●

Contains the latest research on the history of a complex and fascinating region of Europe Published in anticipation of Timisoara’s designation as European Capital of Culture for 2021

The Banat is a uniquely fascinating example of a European cross-border region, incorporating parts of western Romania, northeastern Serbia and a small area of southeastern Hungary. The team of historians, headed by Professor Victor Neumann of the West University in Timisoara, who have contributed to this volume are drawn from across the three modern nations of the region. They analyze the history and culture of the Banat from the earliest times, focusing on the 300 years since it was captured from the Ottoman Turks by Prince Eugene of Savoy. Today this ethnically diverse region has a distinct character of its own, and its Romanian seat, the city of Timisoara, exudes a character quite different from Transylvania and the rest of Romania. This new English edition of the book (originally published in Romanian in 2016 under the title Istoria Banatului) has been expanded and is published to support Timisoara’s designation as European Capital of Culture in 2021. 74 HERITAGE & HISTORY

Based on years of original historical research, encompassing local archives, objects held by the Museum, archeological findings, oral history sources, and more

Exploring this much-loved public park reveals its story. In the Middle Ages, Gunnersbury belonged to the powerful mistress of a medieval king. Prosperous Tudor merchants and City aldermen followed; its first transformation saw the building of a huge Palladian mansion with formal gardens around 1660. After years of neglect it was reborn as a center of Georgian society; a merchant politician and art collector and then a Hanoverian princess each softened the landscape and built follies. In 1800 the mansion was demolished and development plots sold off; two neighboring villas emerged which still survive. From 1835 one was home to the banking family who eventually reunited the estate, and this building is now the Gunnersbury Park Museum. Gunnersbury was opened as a public park in 1926. This book marks the completion of the recent and extensive conservation programme - its 21st century transformation - in the lead-up to the Park centenary. Published to coincide with the Gunnersbury Park Museum’s reopening in spring/summer 2018. Gunnersbury Park receives 30,000-40,000 visitors per year, and this is expected to rise to as many as 1 million visitors per year after the renovation and conservation programme is completed.

Stowe House

Saving an Architectural Masterpiece Nick Morris â—?

The inside story of one of the greatest ever rescues of a country house, which transformed a family seat into a renowned school and National Trust site

The restoration of Stowe House and development of the surrounding estate by Stowe School, allied to work in the landscape gardens by the National Trust, is one of the greatest rescues of a country house ever achieved. The ancestral home of the Temple-Grenvilles came close to demolition in 1920, when the entire site was put up for sale. The formation of Stowe School in 1923 secured a future use that maintained the traditions of the Enlightenment with its unrelenting quest for knowledge and understanding. The past 94 years have seen innovation in land management with the gifting of the gardens to the National Trust and a renovation programme of truly monumental proportions. This major new work details the architectural history of the site, tells the story of the restoration through the words of those most closely involved and demonstrates how the School has continued to build in a sympathetic and harmonious manner that preserves the identity and character of the estate as a whole.

Crossroads

Travelling Through the Middle Ages Various â—?

The story of the trade network and the lively exchange of goods and ideas, diplomatic missions and knowledge in Europe during the period from 300 to 1000 AD

Despite the numerous conflicts, the period from 300 to 1000 AD was also one of growth, continuity and peaceful coexistence. From the late eighteenth century a romantic view of the Middle Ages arose, resulting in the Gothic Revival and the art of the Pre-Raphaelites. A runic graffito in the Hagia Sophia, a gilt Byzantine helmet in the grave of a Frankish nobleman, a treasure hidden from the Vikings in the Low Countries containing an Arab dirham: these are just a few examples of the telling early-medieval finds in this book. Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages are often viewed as a time of decline, chaos, invasions and war. But there is another side to this period as well. There was a rich diversity of cultures in Europe - from Longobards and Merovingians to Byzantines and Avars - and a lively exchange of goods and ideas, sometimes over great distances. The Vikings set up a trade network that reached to Baghdad; the Silk Road brought commodities to Europe, but also diplomatic missions, knowledge and ideas. This is illustrated by the interludes in this book, the stories of ten travelers: pilgrims, scholars, diplomats, and an elephant.

Georges Geffroy (1905 - 1971) Une légende du grand décor français Pierre Arizzoli-Clémentel ●

A monograph on a pivotal fifties interior designer, considered one of the most talented and inspired designers of his generation

Geffroy’s loyal client list featured a ‘who’s who’ of the great names of the time, for whom he created interior designs of supreme refinement. He complemented his decorative schemes with objets and furniture from his favorite period, the late eighteenth century, selected with a famously unerring eye from the most distinguished antique dealers of the time, and draped them with silks chosen with his unique flair for color. Declaring his unbounded admiration for the work of Christian Bérard, Geffroy designed celebrated interiors for Christian Dior, as well as for the great beauties of the age, goddesses of elegance such as Daisy Fellowes and Gloria Guinness, and icons of taste including Charles de Beistegui, Alexis de Redé at the Hôtel Lambert, and Arturo Lopez in his Neuilly mansion and on his legendary yacht. At the end of his life he crowned his career with his exceptional designs for the great art patron and collector Antenor Patino, a final project that allowed him to showcase his remarkable gifts once more. This book reconstructs Georges Geffroy’s interior design projects with the greatest possible accuracy, thanks notably to previously unpublished archive documents and to the valuable contribution of Hubert de Givenchy, one of his most fervent admirers.

Setting the Stage: North Korea Eddo Hartman ●

One of the few western photographers allowed access to the capital of North Korea, Eddo Hartmann captures the surreal character of North Korean ambition

In Setting the Stage: North Korea photographer Eddo Hartmann shows the North Korean regime’s ambitions to build the ultimate socialist city and to mould the people living in that city to their ideals. Hartmann is one of very few Western photographers who has been allowed almost full access to the country. This publication is the result of many years of research and four visits to Pyongyang. After the total destruction of Pyongyang during the Korean War (1950-53), the government took its chance to rebuild the capital from scratch and to turn it into the perfect setting for their propaganda. Pyongyang was to become the city in which every North Korean could experience true modern socialism. The buildings were to be the utopian background against which the inhabitants could live their daily lives. Pyongyang was to immortalize the socialist revolution. Eddo Hartmann had the exceptional opportunity to photograph this architecture of artificiality. In a series of evocative images, he captures the forced and almost surreal character of North Korean ambition. In a very personal and original style, Hartmann focuses on the individual.

Japan in Early Photographs

The Aimé Humbert Collection at the Museum of Ethnography, Neuchâtel Grégoire Mayor, Akiyoshi Tani, Phillippe Dallais ●

●

The Humbert Collection, containing approximately 140 vintage photographs collected between 1863/64 in Japan, is an invaluable account of the Edo-to-Meiji period transition, which shaped the West’s image of this insular nation Contains some of the earliest photographs by Felice Beato and Shimooka Renjô

Photographs taken in Japan between the late Edo period and early Meiji periods found their way overseas, and played a major role in forming Westerners’ image of Japan. Among these collections, the pictures gathered by the Swiss diplomat Aimé Humbert (1819-1900) in the 1860s were crucial in building lasting representations of the island nation: many of these, mainly collected in 1863/64 during a sojourn in Yokohama and Edo, were used as sources for the well-known and largely distributed engravings of his famous book Le Japon illustré, published in Paris in 1870. Belonging to the collection of the MEN, these beautiful and well-preserved photographs are published here for the first time. Presented by Japanese and Swiss scholars before the narrative backdrop of their acquisition and application by foreigners, they offer a striking view of a lost world.

Photographs by Hugo Alcol Rekha Tandon ● ●

First prize in the ‘Dummy Award’ at the International Photography Festival 2017 Hugo Alcol spent a long time on the music scene before being commissioned to photograph exclusive events and parties. His photos capture more than just the ‘look’ - they capture the mental state of his subjects, and the atmosphere of the party.

“This enigmatic book is both a puzzle and a delight at the same time. As the photos show anything from a Spanish social event, to a weird woman with a rabbit and a dead rat floating upside down in a green pool. Although difficult to quite see what is going on, we are constantly drawn back in to try and understand the narrative and we are wanting to come back for another view. Architecture of an Existential Threat Adam Reynolds, Danielle Spera ●

●

This is the first book that offers a broad cultural and geographical typology of shelter spaces in Israel The fantastic photographs seek to straddle the distinct worlds of fine art and reportage exploring ideas of modern Israeli identity

From its foundation in 1948, the state of Israel has felt isolated and under threat from enemies. This collective siege mentality manifests itself with over 1 million public and private shelters. The Israelis have integrated these ‘Doomsday spaces’ into their everyday life and ‘transformed’ them into spaces that look like normal dance studios, bars or temples. For many people in Israel who live with a personal history of exile and persecution, these shelters are the architecture of an existential threat both real and perceived. Adam Reynolds shot the images in this book over the course of three years, from 2013 to 2015. The photographs offer a broad cultural and geographical typology of the shelter spaces by documenting them on either side of the Green Line, throughout Israel and the Occupied Territories, in an effort to offer the broadest survey possible. They straddle the distinct worlds of fine art and reportage. “Working in a country like Israel, it is difficult, if not impossible, to separate art from social reality,” says Adam Reynolds.

More than 50 projects from around the globe - museums, theaters, offices, laboratories, airports, cultural centers, civic works, master plans - are presented in rich full color with insights from Pelli that delve into the design and construction of these landmarks from a practice that has thrived for nearly 40 years.

Wake Up! To the World of Bernard Rhodes Bernard Rhodes, Editors: Kiersten Armstrong, Mike Warlow ●

●

ISBN: 9780997391633 KMW Studio 8 x 10 in. 160pp., 200 col. May 2018 $39.95/CDN$53.95 Hardcover

Appeals to popular culture book buyers and collectors, especially those dealing in biographies and memoirs, popular music history, punk culture, or the Clash Published to follow the Clash’s 40th anniversary in 2016, this is a testament to the man who both facillitated the band’s formation and held it together

From the growth of punk and beyond, this visually rich collection of art, fashion and ephemera, accompanied by essays, draws from the archives and philosophy of one of the ‘prime instigators’ of UK punk - Bernard Rhodes. Wake Up! To the World of Bernard Rhodes is a first-hand account of the punk movement. Bernard Rhodes shares his title of ‘prime instigator of UK punk’ with Malcom McLaren. Been there, seen it, done it hardly does Rhodes’ story justice. Inspired by the avant-garde Situationist movement, and the designer of radical t-shirts for McLaren and the Vivienne Westwood Kings Road shop, it was Rhodes who introduced John Lydon to the Sex Pistols before engineering the formation of the Clash. With him as their manager, and the co-creator of their super-committed style, the Clash became and remains one of the biggest bands of the era, and a symbol of punk as a positive force. Alongside his two stints with them, Rhodes also nurtured the Specials and Dexy’s Midnight Runners to huge success.

●

ISBN: 9781864707373 The Images Publishing Group 9 x 12 in. 420pp., 450 col. May 2018 $50.00/CDN$67.50 Hardcover

Features informative texts by Centerbrook Architects illuminati, such as John Morris Dixon, John L. Lahey, Jefferson B. Riley, and Chad Floyd Set out with an overview of the progressive work across four decades of dedication, with thorough and thought-provoking discussions of master plans, purchase and renovation, design philosophies, budgets, awards, future scope, and other small projects

The year was 1977, and Quinnipiac College was forming a new campus in Hamden, Connecticut. Chance would bring the author and the place together, and for the next forty years Jefferson B. Riley would be Quinnipiac’s architect, designing over a hundred renovations, additions, and new buildings on the three separate campuses that now comprise Quinnipiac University. The University thus became Riley’s devotion, vigorously so after the arrival of Dr. John L. Lahey in 1987 who, as its eighth president, personally put Quinnipiac University on its path to national prominence. Riley’s work has not only helped to give Quinnipiac roots but also wings. Here, then, is a comprehensive architectural account of Quinnipiac from 1977 to 2017. This is a comprehensive and stunning new architecture monograph on Centerbrook’s work on Quinnipiac University. Highly illustrated throughout, the project’s development is charted across four decades. The book is beautifully complemented with photographs by award-winning Kumaoni photographer Anup Sah, among others. It is also a visual delight for those who have an interest in the region.

Sights Unscene Brad Libenson ●

●

Comprehensive selection of communities through New York State, represented in stunning photography New York - Sights Unscene is a wonderful collection of photography taken throughout the diverse and beautiful landscape of New York State. This book encompasses all the regional areas, major cities, rural towns, villages and scenic views.

The photographer, Brad Libenson has captured the unexpected and defining images of the “Empire State” and presented them to the viewer in an engaging and addictive tome. “Regardless of which state you choose to explore, one eventually discovers (and comes to admire) the certain qualities of that particular geographic cut-out that defines its particular sense of place. Though each state reveals its special qualities and unique characteristics, certain states stand out by the sheer range of diversity and contrast in their people and environments. New York excels as one of the few special states that embodies such an impressive gamut of cultural and geographic heterogeneity. This of course makes it much easier to capture its essence on camera. From the vineyards slipping down the shores of Lake Eire to those blanketing the North Fork of Long Island. From straining to glimpse the peaks of the Adirondack Mountains from the top of the Empire State Building and vise versa. This list of comparisons can keep going and is like none other. I just hope I was able to capture a fraction of the evoked feelings that made my journeys through this state a most incredible and pleasurable experience. ” - Brad Libenson

ISBN: 9781785510861 Scala Arts Publishers Inc. 8.25 x 9.75 in. 56pp., 106 col. February 2018 $6.95/CDN$9.50 Paperback

A fresh and illuminating look at Durham Cathedral, a truly stunning building Specially commissioned photography

Durham Cathedral is one of the great buildings of Europe. Set grandly on a rocky promontory next to Durham Castle, with the medieval city huddled below and the river sweeping around, the profile of this World Heritage Site is instantly recognizable. Started in 1093 and dedicated to Cuthbert, a Saxon saint, the cathedral was a pioneering building - which makes the 40 or so years it took to complete an astonishing achievement. The cathedral was a fitting symbol of the power of the Norman prince bishops, who were charged by the king to defend the realm from the constant threat of invasion. Perched on its rocky peninsula next to a great Norman fortification, the cathedral therefore spoke of human as well as divine power. This beautifully illustrated guide introduces the reader to the glories of Durham, and features the newly opened ‘Open Treasure’ exhibition.

Peterborough Cathedral A Glimpse of Heaven Dr Jonathan Foyle ● ● ● ●

Published to celebrate the 900th anniversary of Peterborough’s founding A tribute to and exploration of one of England’s finest medieval buildings A new synthesis of ongoing research by author Dr Jonathan Foyle Specially commissioned photography

Peterborough Cathedral is one of England’s finest Norman buildings and, with the addition of its uniquely arranged west front, also among the most individual. Architectural historian Dr Jonathan Foyle combines the wealth of his specialist knowledge with the recent findings of other historians in this study and elucidation of a truly impressive building. He shows how its liminal position between land and water reflects the mediating role of the medieval Church between the terrestrial and the celestial realms. It is fundamental to the Saxon abbey’s dedication to St Peter, bearer of the key to heaven, and is reflected in the construction, decoration and symbolic language of the twelfth-century building. Engagingly written and beautifully illustrated with specially commissioned photography and the author’s own architectural drawings, Peterborough Cathedral: A Glimpse of Heaven offers a superb tribute to one of England’s most beautiful and enigmatic medieval buildings.
