POP! Design, Culture, Fashion 1956-1976 Geoffrey Rayner, Richard Chamberlain, Annamarie Stapleton

• Explores the impact of music, art and personality on the development of the design and fashion of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s

Pop! Design, Culture, Fashion 1956 -1976 covers all aspects of Pop design in Britain and America, from early rock 'n' roll to punk. It looks at record covers and packaging designs by Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Peter Blake and Richard Hamilton, and the work of fashion designers such as Mary Quant, Barbara Hulanicki from Biba and Vivienne Westwood. Pop graphics are also covered, from the psychedelic posters of Alan Aldridge, to rock posters from the west coast of America. There are also reproductions of rarely-seen underground magazines such as Oz, Gandalf's Garden, l' Actuel and the International Times. The ephemeral nature of much of Pop design is explored - from paper furniture and 'throwaway' paper dresses, to longer-lasting trends such as Union Jack clothing and machine-embroidered denim. The book also looks at the work of 'Them', an influential group of 'Baroque Pop' designers who coalesced around Zandra Rhodes in the early 70s, and ends with the anti-design of punk fashion by Vivienne Westwood, and the self-proclaimed 'horrible by design' punk graphics of Jamie Reid. Whilst there have been innumerable books on the Swinging Sixties, and on Pop Art, this is the first book to look at Pop design over a twenty year span, and to examine the interconnected nature of so many elements of the phenomenon such as books and magazines, music, film, fashion and graphic art. It is also unique in that the illustrations are not sourced from the usual magazine archive images, but are photographs of the artefacts themselves, from Elton John's waistcoat, embroidered with suns, stars and rainbows, to every teenager's must-have item: 'Glo Glo boots for Go Go girls'.

2 DESIGN Lighting in the Modern Era Alexander Koch

• New edition of this seminal 1953 study of lighting for the modern era, showcasing midcentury modern design that is as relevant now as ever

ISBN: 9783897903678 Arnoldsche Art Publishers 300 x 210mm. 128 pp. 250 b.&w. July 2012 £35.00 Hardback

In 1953 Alexander Koch published his book Neuzeitliche Leuchten. Nowadays Koch's then selection of lighting by international designers and manufacturers seems truly visionary. It is apparent that after the war America, Scandinavia and Italy exerted a strong influence on designs hitherto rather dominated by Bauhaus purism in Germany. As in architecture, one can also speak of an 'international style' with regard to lighting design. Despite the new orientation towards linear, dynamically flowing forms that cross national borders, diversity within the sculptural appearance of lighting itself remains important as the primary design goal, along with the effect the lighting exudes. The space-defining quality of modern era lighting has been dedicated its own chapter, in which interiors by Richard Neutra and Walter Gropius, among others, testify to the scenographic potential of the new lighting culture. More than 250 original images show the design trends of important manufacturers. Apart from numerous lesser known designs, one can also see lighting by prominent artists, designers and architects. This new edition of the almost obsolete original book is an indispensable standard work for collectors and modern lighting enthusiasts. Text in English, German and French.

Eero Saarinen Furniture for Everyman Brian Lutz

• A showcase of the work of one of the most celebrated, prolific, and unorthodox architects and designers of the twentieth century, focusing exclusively on his innovative furniture designs

Eero Saarinen has become a beacon of American modernism. While famous for his sculptural and bold architecture, such as the TWA Terminal at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, Eero Saarinen: Furniture for Everyman is the first monograph to focus exclusively on his furniture designs.

ISBN 9781938461019 Pointed Leaf Press 356 x 292mm. 224 pp. 70 col. 130 b.&w. October 2012 £55.00 Hardback

A self-declared “form-giver,” his furniture, like his architecture is characterised by its sleek and expressive forms. Taken into production by the furniture company Knoll, his designs were trend-setting and revolutionary. As many of them continue to be produced today, such as the well-known and loved Womb and Tulip chairs and his Pedestal Collection, they are ubiquitous. Featuring rare and never-before-seen archival photographs that span Saarinen's technical work to his personal life, a preface by Florence Knoll, and a piece by designer and Saarinen protégé Niels Diffrient, Eero Saarinen: Furniture for Everyman is the authoritative and comprehensive guide to the furniture designs and legacy of the modern master.

Hardy Amies Michael Pick

• Hardy Amies is associated worldwide with

glamorous, elegant clothes and is perhaps most famously known as dressmaker to HM The Queen; the book is being published in 2012, the year of The Queen's Diamond Jubilee In November 2012, the Fashion & Textile Museum London, will be hosting an exhibition showcasing Amies' work - including examples of his gowns, sketches and printed ephemera - alongside that of Norman Hartnell and Freddie Fox

Hardy Amies epitomised understated British couture, emphasising the cut of fine materials by tailored construction. Untrained in dressmaking, he achieved headlines in Vogue in 1937 with his 'Panic' suit, a reconstructed design of a staple in every woman's wardrobe, wittily named to reflect current events. Evoking the glamour of pre-war London while meeting the demands of contemporary society's activities - town to country, morning to night - Amies designs drew a star-studded clientele. His war-time 'utility' designs revealed his design philosophy (and partly concealed his role as head of the Belgian Section of SOE), unveiling a needle-sharp intelligence and intuition for the changing world of fashion, his elegant execution of which was rewarded through the influential seal of approval by HM Queen Elizabeth II, as Princess Elizabeth, in 1950. The first post-war international designer to visit the USA, Amies' luxurious style produced lucrative global business opportunities, including readyto-wear, menswear shown as couture, and wide-ranging merchandising options. Michael Pick, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and formerly an exhibitioner in history at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, is the author of seven books on design and the decorative arts. Hardy Amies draws on conversations with Sir Hardy Amies, who asked Michael to write about his life. Also available by Michael Pick: Be Dazzled! Norman Hartnell ISBN: 9780983388937

Behind most Hollywood stars there is a fashion stylist's guiding hand making sure that everyone will gasp with admiration - and not horror - at the actress' outfit when she makes her walk along the red carpet. From film stars to pop stars to political figures, stylists are much in demand and some are almost as well known as their clients, such as Patricia Field who memorably styled Sarah Jessica Parker for her role in Sex and the City. This book profiles some of the top international fashion stylists working today. Starting with an introduction that explains what a stylist does, the book then focuses on people currently working in the field. Arranged alphabetically, each entry has a brief biography of the stylist including how he or she got into the field and images of the stylist at work plus photographs of some of their clients and styling sessions, sketches, notes, and tips. From the more traditional stylists to the more outrageous ones, the book covers a wide range of styles and media from styling for magazine shoots as well as for film and video. Luanne McLean is a journalist and professional stylist. She has interviewed many top celebrities and published numerous articles in publications such as the Sunday Express, Yours magazine, OK! magazine and Scarlet.

Fashion Icons Fashion Trends throughout the Centuries Leen Demeester

• Fashion Icons presents an overview of the history of

fashion items and their role in female emancipation

• Includes wonderful pictures, interesting facts and funny quotations

“The history of the corset proves that women have attached great importance to outward appearance and this since more than 2000 years. The corset was not a fashion item for the masses. The first flourishing period for the corset dates back to the Elizabethan and Spanish fashion between the 16th and 17th Century. The strict form of the corset went hand in hand with the fashion of the hoop skirt which was made in hard metal and accentuated female slenderness. The slender the loins, the more beautiful a woman”. In Fashion Icons, Leen Demeester explores fashion trends throughout the centuries. She traces the origins of items of clothing such as the corset, the bra, the dress, the mini-skirt, trousers, accessories and high heels. These 'icons' show a distinct parallel between the history of women's appearance and the history of female emancipation. Top designers confirm that the image of a woman (and her place in society) still depends on her appearance and especially on the clothes she wears. Featured designers include: Marlies Dekkers, Jean Paul Gaultier, Manolo Blahnik, Edouard Vermeulen, Patrizia Pepe, Yves SaintLaurent and Elvis Pompillo. Contents: The Corset; The Bra; High Heels; The Mini Skirt; The Dress; Trousers and Trouser Suits; Accessories. Leen Demeester studied Modern Languages at the universities of Ghent in Belgium and of Eichstätt in Germany. She has worked as a journalist for trade journals since 2002.

The sari is the most representative apparel of India, worn in a variety of ways. The sari is a fabric-length of varying densities in its body, borders and end pieces often woven by combining a range of cottons and silks in colours and patterns that are constantly evolving. Saris is an exhaustive overview of this fascinating unstitched garment and a cutting-edge documentation of design and all that supports it socially, culturally and economically. Travelling district-by-district, village-by-village, the book explores an entire spectrum of traditional weaver and printer settlements in fourteen sari-producing states of India. Thus emerges the first comprehensive compilation of the whole range and scale of the sari: the structures, designs, colours, the format and technology that make up the lingua of the sari. For the first time, this book offers a step-by-step guide for at least 108 ways of draping the sari, through a series of line drawings and colour photographs. A vivid account of how saris come into being for the lay reader and the specialist - be they textilists, designers, scholars or developers who will find this book equally engaging.

Lucy has translated her unique perspective into Knitologie, giving even the amateur knitter an immediate feeling of accomplishment. Lucy Main Tweet was a global fashion leader for Talbots, Evan Picone, J. Crew and Bernard Chaus. 18 JEWELLERY Designed for Fashion Italian Jewellery from 1950 Deanna Farneti Cera In Italy there has always been a tradition of making jewellery from semiprecious metal, as copies or prototypes of fine jewellery pieces. The 50s and 60s allowed for the very first big names in fashion jewellery to arise: Giuliano Fratti, Emma Caimi Pellini, Coppola e Toppo, Luciana de Reutern, Canesi, Ornella... The book reserves a special place for an important phenomenon that took place in Milan at the end of the 1970s – “Made in Italy” – when Italian fashion entered and dominated – the international scene, and Italian designers such as Armani, Versace, Ferré, Moschino and Prada found incredible success all over the world. Throughout the 80s and 90s, and well into the year 2000 further names in fashion jewellery were pushed to the fore. The final section of the book is devoted to new talents, selecting ten designers whose jewels are particularly interesting and innovative. Designed for Fashion applies special focus to the most important, interesting pieces, through both period images taken from exclusive fashion magazines, and through stunning photographs of actual pieces, resulting in almost 400 illustrations.

• A. Lange & Söhne – Great Timepieces from Saxony •

is a work of encyclopaedic precision and a must for every true aficionado of mechanical watchmaking A completely revised edition of a classic standard work

'Future needs heritage' - these were the words with which German philosopher Odo Marquard summarised his insight that the new world cannot exist without the legacy of the old one. The same words aptly describe the quintessence of Reinhard Meis' work devoted to A. Lange & Söhne, probably Germany's most famous watch brand. With his profoundly detailed knowledge, the author builds a bridge from the grand heritage of the brand in the 19th century to its current eminence at the pinnacle of international precision watchmaking. Reinhard Meis has dedicated eight years to thoroughly revising his standard work dedicated to this horological legend from Dresden - A. Lange and Söhne, probably Germany’s most famous watch brand. Meis' book describes the complete history of the Lange watchmaking dynasty and its timepieces, from the early beginnings in the 19th century to the present. With 916 pages and more than 2700 illustrations, mostly in colour, the scope of the book has more than doubled versus the prior edition, assuming truly encyclopaedic proportions. The text and the images testify to the author's expertise. In particular, the authoritatively annotated pictures are a treasure trove of information for the global community of Lange fans. Never before have the coveted collectors' watches been anthologised so comprehensively. Reinhard Meis is an acclaimed writer on horology.

Christopher Payne

• Detailed assessment of a complex subject, updated to include 300 new colour illustrations

• While French furniture dominates, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Flemish, Dutch, Russian and Scandinavian examples are also included

The sheer range and complexity of the subject of European furniture makes it impossible to adequately evaluate in anything less than this detailed and lavishly illustrated work. It was inevitable that Europe in the 19th century, undergoing great political and industrial change, would be responsible for such a confused mixture of styles; France dominated the movement, but influences filtered into Europe from Turkey, Africa, and the Far and Middle East. While much of the furniture was either bizarre or massproduced, the period also saw the manufacture of the excellently crafted and beautifully designed pieces, which are so sought after and appreciated today. This pioneering reference work discusses the European furniture produced between 1830 and 1910 in great depth, and with great clarity. Christopher Payne is the son of a Leicestershire antique dealer, brought up on traditional English furniture of the 18th and 19th centuries. The family business started by his grandfather in 1901, made and restored furniture and Christopher spent as much time as be could in the workshops. After University, he joined Sotheby's as a porter, subsequently becoming the director responsible for furniture from 1830 to 1930. His 25-year career at Sotheby's gave him an unprecedented grounding in what was, at the time, the largely uncharted territory of later European furniture and he has become one of the world's leading experts in his field. A freelance consultant to private clients since 1994, he also contributes regularly to BBC Antiques Roadshow.

ISBN: 9781864704792 The Images Publishing Group 210 x 210mm. 324 pp. 300 col. July 2012 ÂŁ25.00 Hardback (compact edition)

There are few destinations more alluring than resorts. The combination of an evocative location, lavish rooms, exceptional service and architecture that's designed to inspire, has long been irresistible to travellers. In the past decade, however, the global search for stylish getaways has become so intense that hospitality has now become the world's fastest growing industry. Few people understand the nature of resorts and the secrets of designing them more than the world-renowned architects and designers, Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo (WATG). Having created hundreds of exclusive destinations for well-known companies such as the Four Seasons, Sheraton and Hyatt, ranging from luxurious island resorts to cool mountaintop retreats, WATG has become a respected name in the area of resorts and hotels. Some of their extraordinary projects include the Hotel Bora Bora in French Polynesia, The Palace of the Lost City in South Africa, and the Hyatt Regency in Kauai Resort & Spa in Hawaii. This spectacular volume looks at these and other world-class destinations, and also takes you behind the foyers to explore the inspiration and ideas behind the designs, which often begin from a thought on a notepad. As well, it offers insightful interviews with those involved with the projects, explains how the vernacular architecture of the region can influence the end design, and even predicts what resorts may look like in the future.

Typology Hong Kong, Rome, New York, Buenos Aires. Review No. II Edited by Emanuel Christ, Victoria Easton and Christoph Gantenbein Typology presents around 160 buildings in Hong Kong, Rome, New York, and Buenos Aires that have been analysed by the chair of Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. This selective and subjective inventory of metropolitan and essentially anonymous 20th century building production provides a basis for urban project creation. In this new book, each building is documented with layout and floor plan, axonometric projection, photograph, and key information. The essays by Emanuel Christ and Christoph Gantenbein and four texts by other authors explain the interactions between the contexts, especially the governing urban rule sets and the buildings, and show the potential for the design of a contemporary urban architecture. 34 ARCHITECTURE Icons of World Architecture Written and photographed by Werner Blaser

• A personal and reflective journey through icons of world architecture by Swiss architect Werner Blaser

• Drawing on photographs from his impressive archive, which he accompanies with short explanatory texts, Werner Blaser vividly demonstrates the basic foundations of architecture and perception

“What constitutes good architecture?” is a question Werner Blaser was always asked by friends, readers, companions and students. In this comprehensive work the author sets out on a search for the answer to that question by analysing special buildings.

ISBN: 9783721207972 Niggli 240 x 235mm. 176 pp. 170 col. July 2012 £33.50 Hardback

Drawing on photographs from his impressive archive, which he accompanies with short explanatory texts, Icons of World Architecture demonstrates the basic foundations of architecture and perception. Photographs of the works of Mies van der Rohe, Norman Foster or Helmut Jahn - often juxtaposed with the author's own buildings and projects - illustrate the passing on of time-honoured construction principles. Text in English and German.

10 Principles of Architecture Ruth Slavid Great buildings, like great art, contain something that is impossible to define or pin down. But that greatness, in almost all cases, overlays the principles set out in this book. While one cannot guarantee that a building will be great, if all the principles are followed, you will avoid the pitfalls to which too many are subject. This new title in Vivays Publishing's 10 Principles series provides clear explanations of each tenet along with useful illustrations to help the reader visualise what is being discussed. The author assumes no background on the subject, but an interest in learning more about what goes into making a building work. An experienced writer on this subject, Ruth Slavid provides a useful and illuminating primer to the field that is accessible to students of architecture, architects or architectural historians or anyone interested in the principles behind the buildings that surround them. ISBN: 9781908126283 Vivays Publishing 245 x 190 mm. 192 pp. 150 col. September 2012 £19.95 Paperback

The rules of architecture have been discussed since the Roman architect and engineer Vitruvius coined the trilogy firmitas, utilitas and venustas, most commonly translated as being solid, useful and beautiful. Put simply, this means that a building should stand up and endure, that it should serve its function, and that it should give pleasure to its users and the wider community.

On assignment for Look magazine to photograph the movie star in 1961, Douglas Kirkland photographed Marilyn Monroe and made history for both himself and for the actress. Working in the intimate confines of an unmade bed, the result – still amazing today – is a series of some of the most spontaneous and flirtatious photographs ever taken of this film legend. They made the photographer’s career and added a new facet to that of the actress. Douglas Kirkland is one of the best-known and longest-working photographers of our time. He began his career on assignment for Look and Life magazines, where he photographed such icons as Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, and Marlene Dietrich. His most recent books include, Coco Chanel: Three Weeks, 1962; Michael Jackson: The Making of Thriller/Four Days, 1983; and Freeze Frame, Five Decades/400 Photographs, a collection of four decades of photographs of actors on the more than 100 movie sets he has visited, many of them iconic. Kirkland has been named ‘Photographer of the Year’ (PMDA) and ‘Mentor of the Year’ (Fotofusion). He lives in California with his wife and business partner, Françoise.

The Unforgettable Maharajas One Hundred and Fifty Years of Photography E Jaiwant Paul and Pramod Kapoor

• Showcasing an extensive range of photographs from India's princely states, the book opens a window into the private lives of the maharajas

This luxurious book is a documentation in photographs, of the maharajas of India: undoubtedly one of the greatest anachronisms of the 20th century. Among them were enlightened rulers and profligate princes, saints and scoundrels, heroes and cowards, sadists and boors, charmers and eccentrics. In the eyes of their people, however, they had the divine right to rule and they left the stamp of an unmistakable aura of majesty. A comprehensive collection of historical photographs from princely India, this is also the largest selection of royal pictures in any one book. Many years of research and documentation were invested to verify their details. The result is a book that conveys the romance that the maharajas represented to the world and a historical record of an age we will never see again. E. Jaiwant Paul is a man of varied interests and is the author of several books, including Be My Sword and Shield - Weapons of the Indian Warrior and The Story of Tea. A keen cricketer and tennis player, he now lives in Delhi. Pramod Kapoor is a collector of historical records and photographs, and a publisher by profession. The photographs for this book were lovingly collected by him over a long period of time from all over the world. Often, the best photographs were found in old trunks lying forgotten in dusty attics or damp basements of the palaces. The biggest challenge, however, was to coax fading memories to remember names and places. A keen photographer, he has also compiled and researched photographs for pioneering books like India: Then and Now, Witness to Life and Freedom: Margaret-Bourke White in India, New Delhi: Making of a Capital, and the most recent Delhi: Red Fort to Raisina.

Hollywood Unseen is a tribute to the incredible inventiveness and ingenuity of the great Hollywood film studios: Columbia, Paramount, MGM, Universal, Warner Brothers, RKO and Twentieth Century Fox. From the late 1920s to the early 1950s these studios presided over the ‘Golden Age of Cinema’, and their publicity departments created some of the most stunning and iconic images of Hollywood's stars ever taken. Here, for the first time, are photographs showing the ‘ordinary lives’ of the stars, including Rita Hayworth, Gary Cooper, Humphrey Bogart and Marilyn Monroe. In reality, these photographs were as carefully constructed and prepared as any classic portrait or scene, and they depicted the actors and actresses exactly as the studios wanted them to be seen. Ironically, many of the images were only used once or twice, and were then never seen again. Drawn from the extensive archive of the John Kobal Foundation, this book showcases an extraordinary collection of these hidden photographic gems. John Kobal was an authority on Hollywood portrait photography, who established a preeminent collection of works featuring iconic stars of the day. The Getty Image Library in London will be hosting an exhibition of these images to coincide with the publication of this book.

42 PHOTOGRAPHY David Gulden The Centre Cannot Hold Foreword by Susan Minot

• Stunning photography in which nature's creatures are captured with greater intimacy and artistry than one would have thought possible

ISBN: 9780983270287 Glitterati Incorporated 279 x 228mm. 244 pp. 95 b.&w. September 2012 £47.50 Hardback

Having spent the last 20 years in Africa photographing wildlife alongside the likes of Peter Beard, David Gulden has come to understand that his endeavour is more than one to create appealing artworks, but instead to create a document of the declining landscape of all the precious creatures that live there. In 95 black-and-white photographs that feature tranquility, bursts of action, and the natural canvas of the animals and their environments, he visualises for us the concept of global change so famously described by William Yeats in his poem, ‘The Second Coming,’ and from which the inspired title of this work derives. Join this extraordinary photographer and environmentalist, David Gulden, on a phenomenal personal yet universal safari that until the publication of this book would not have been possible except through actual travel; a safari where nature’s creatures are captured with greater intimacy and artistry than one would have thought possible. David Gulden is a native New Yorker who has spent at least half of every year, for the past twenty, in Africa, primarily in Kenya, where he has fastidiously photographed virtually every form of wildlife across the country from the Masai Mara to Lake Turkana.

See the World Beautiful Anne Menke, Foreword by Tommy Hilfiger Anne Menke has travelled the world on assignment for the likes of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Vanity Fair, and The New York Times, usually in search of the perfect environment to shoot a fashion spread. Through this, she has discovered that these environments themselves are the origins of much of the fashion we see on the runways today and has compiled an incredible record of people and places with that in mind. Texts by luminaries such as Peter Beard, Paul Johnson and Paul Smith explain where fashion meets culture in ethnic populations in Latin America, Europe, Asia, North America, and more.

Pop Art ‘Time to unpack’ Frank van de Schoor, Lieke Wouters, Antoon Melissen and Willy van den Bussche Pop Art, as an international genre of art, was born out of a zeitgeist of freedom, sexual revolution and the feminist movement. Indeed, the pieces – often re-workings of everyday mass produced objects – clearly reflected the social attitudes of their time. Pop Art: ‘Time to Unpack’ is filled with high-quality work by renowned artists, demonstrating their involvement in the development of the modern way of life of the 60's, and ultimately, the 20th-century. During the 60’s a new generation demonstrated that it was possible to express yourself through the way in which you chose to live your life; that you could decide exactly how and who you wanted to be. Idolisation of icons including Marilyn Monroe and Bridgette Bardot, and fascination with luxury living surroundings and exciting leisure-time activities were all typical of the Pop Art scene. Right up until today, it has remained a genre that inspires and challenges us; cultural tensions between the international media and consumer society continue to exist, and that is exactly why Pop Art resonates with the younger generations and continues to simulate their senses.

Nineteenth-Century European Painting From Barbizon to Belle Époque William Rau • A fresh approach to nineteenth-century European painting; luciously illustrated it offers a comprehensive overview of the century’s artistic innovation

Nineteenth-Century European Painting: From Barbizon to Belle Époque represents a comprehensive guide to the range of stylistically diverse genres of nineteenthcentury European painting. Accessible and insightful, this exquisitely illustrated volume presents the historical context behind the century’s essential artistic movements including Romantic Painting, The PreRaphaelite Brotherhood, Realist Painting, Academic Painting, and Impressionist Painting. Influenced by an overwhelming wave of political, military and social change, nineteenth-century Europe represented an era more diverse in painterly subjects and styles than any before it. Indeed, it was a period that saw many European painters moving away from the strictures of the academy system, choosing instead to use their training to develop new techniques and traditions. A collection of independent stories, this book also outlines the unique progression between the different movements, exciting and enlightening the reader about the most magnificent period of art the world has ever known.

Masterpieces of Russian Stage Design 1880-1930 John E. Bowlt, Nikita D. LobanovRostovsky and Nina Lobanov-Rostovsky Russian stage designs are immensely pleasing to the eye. They vibrate with colour, texture, movement. Furthermore, through their daring inventions, Russian artists of the first thirty years of the 20th century transformed, profoundly and permanently, our perception of stage design - and hence of the theatre. They belonged to an extraordinarily creative generation of impresarios, dancers, actors, patrons, and critics who inspired or at least made a major contribution to the international renaissance of the art of the stage, and in particular areas, e.g. the teaching and performing of ballet, their influence is still present today. However, in spite of the many published commentaries on the Russian theatre, the autobiographies and biographies of its leading representatives, and the scholarly appreciations of its various components (ballet, drama, opera), the subject of stage design in Russia has yet to be explored in all its manifestations. The Lobanov-Rostovsky collection of stage designs and its catalogue raisonnÊ document the history of modern Russian art, one of the most important interludes within the cultural renaissance of the early 20th century. The catalogue registers the more than 1,000 items in the collection with full details, artists’ biographies and scholarly commentary regarding the set and costume designs, portraits and promotional materials represented in the collection. The many artists include celebrities such as Bakst, Benois, Goncharova, Larionov, Malevich, Popova, Rodchenko, and Tatlin as well as less familiar names such as Anisfeld, Lissim, Remisoff, and Soudeikine. Unique in size, scope, and composition, the collection is unequalled. Its catalogue, therefore, serves as a rich resource for advanced research to scholars, both Western and Russian, interested in the history of modern Russian culture.

Saint Anne Leonardo da Vinci’s Ultimate Masterpiece Edited by Vincent Delieuvin

• Essential to art libraries and art historians who study Leonardo and the Renaissance

• The first book to have the photos of the restored masterpiece, complete with many new details

• As the recent blockbuster Leonardo exhibit – the fastest-selling exhibit ever held at the National Gallery in London - proved, the interest in Leonardo is huge

The Virgin and Child with St. Anne is, with the Battle of Anghiari, Leonardo's most ambitious project of his later years. This masterpiece has been under restoration and it will be exhibited in its newly found splendour at the Louvre. There, for the first time, it will be flanked by cartoons with the same subject (but with St. John the Baptist) held at the National Gallery, London, and by preparatory sketches and drawings, thus allowing the public to gain new insights in Leonardo's method of work. The exhibition and the catalogue present 131 works by Leonardo and other contemporary artists, such as Raphael and Luini, placing the St. Anne in its proper art historical context. This great work has had an enduring influence on the development of art in the High Renaissance (Michelangelo, Solario, Andrea del Sarto, etc.), but its effects are seen on paintings much more recent, such as those of Odilon Redon and Max Ernst. Vincent Delieuvin is a curator of paintings at the Louvre. He was the co-author of Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese: Rivals in Venice.

Bosch: The Garden of Earthly Delights

Leonardo: Mona Lisa

Stafano Zuffi

Marco Carminati

What we know about the life of Hieronymus Bosch gives us no inkling whatsoever of the explosion of fantasy and the bizarre devilry in his oeuvre. The master’s undisputed masterpiece, The Garden of Earthly Delights, is linked to Gothic imagery, and embraces the extraordinary innovations of the 16th century.

Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa is considered the most famous painting in the world; but despite this, it is still shrouded in mystery. Following its story we'll travel from luxurious Florentine palazzi to World War II air raid shelters. Not to mention the sensational theft that, in 1911, had the whole word waiting with bated breath...

Paolo Veronese is acknowledged as one of the giants of Venetian Renaissance painting. His artistic production was richly varied, extending from imposing altarpieces to smaller religious paintings for private clients, from grand portraits to sensual episodes drawn from the classical tradition. Veronese was also an outstanding draughtsman, and his graphic oeuvre ranged from preliminary sketches to highly finished chiaroscuro sheets. A foreigner in Venice, he created paintings for Venetian clients and settings, as well for the mainland and export abroad. Thus, Veronese's art was unusually versatile for its time. This magnificently illustrated book will display this extraordinary versatility and examine Veronese's artistic practice, concentrating on works from North American collections. For a sixteenth-century painter, many of whose works are in fresco or on enormous canvases still in situ, Veronese is unusually broadly represented in North America. At the same time, the broad spectrum of Veronese as a painter and draughtsman has not been available to American audiences in over two decades. This publication authored by an international team of experts, will be a major contribution to Veronese studies.

Raphael and his School Michiel Plomp and Achim Gnann In his short life (1483-1520), Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino developed, during the Italian Renaissance, from a hard working pupil into one for the greatest artists of his time. Whilst Michelangelo was working hard on the Sistine Chapel, Raphael started working on frescoes in the private quarters of the Pope, the Stanze, is another highlight of the Italian Renaissance and one of Raphael’s most famous works. Raphael is equally as famous for his many Madonnas: paintings depicting Maria and the baby Jesus. Raphael’s Madonnas put those of his contemporaries in the shade due purely to their serenity, seeming simplicity and perfection. Raphael and his School focuses on the origin of Raphael’s drawing technique and the influence he has bestowed upon his students in his large studio. Insight into the way the drawings work in Raphael’s creative process and how they compared to his frescoes and paintings are also divulged. ISBN: 9789040007354 WBooks 275 x 220mm. 256 pp. 180 col. Impressionists in their Gardens explores gardens through the senses of the Impressionists from three continents - Europe, North America and Australia - enjoying the essentially similar pleasures of the garden, but engaging with the light from their skies in order to create very different sensations. The enclosure of the garden acts like a picture frame showcasing a living canvas that exudes the individuality, vision and taste of its tenants, their family, friends, lifestyles and, in the simple words of the greatest Impressionist and gardener Monet, providing motifs to paint. The first section uses contemporary paintings and photographs to see the who, what and where of Impressionist gardens - planting, eating, loving, sleeping, children, animals, working and painting. The second section, illustrated with paintings, old photographs and modern images, starts at the horticultural source - the nurseryman Latour-Marliac at Temple sur Lot, then Monet at Giverny; American Impressionists at Old Lyme, Cos Cob and Appledore in the USA; Gertrude Jekyll at Munstead Wood and beyond; the Heidelburg School and Frederick McCubbin at Fontainebleau; and, chronologically last but not least, Renoir at Les Colettes.

Samuel Palmer The Poetical Landscape Colin Harrison

• Presents a new interpretation of Palmer as one of the most consistently innovative landscape artists of the nineteenth century and includes unique previously-unpublished material

Since his son's biography, published in 1892, Samuel Palmer has been seen as the victim of Victorian materialism, a visionary who sacrificed his talent to the naturalism popular with the middle classes. It is generally believed that Palmer's early work of the Shoreham Period was inspired by his love of William Blake, and, after his marriage to John Linnell's eldest daughter, his later watercolours and etchings more indebted to Linnell. However, Palmer himself would have argued that his whole career was devoted to an exploration of what Linnell called the 'poetical landscape' to 'create spiritual perceptions'. Palmer was essentially self-taught, and experimented throughout his life with unconventional techniques in his determination to convey the 'infinity and endless suggestiveness' of nature. Samuel Palmer: A Poetical Landscape discusses Palmer's relations with the Old Masters he admired, notably Claude Lorrain; his seniors, such as Blake and Turner; and his contemporaries, first the 'Ancients', and later his fellow members of the Watercolour Society and the Etching Club, through a close examination of the works by Palmer in the Ashmolean Museum and other collections, and a fresh reading of his letters, many of them unpublished.

St Paul’s Cathedral 1,400 Years at the Heart of London Dr Ann Saunders

• The fascinating history of St Paul's Cathedral, illustrated with rare items from city and cathedral archives

Sir Christopher Wren’s St Paul’s, built after the Fire of London of 1666, has become the City’s most familiar landmark, its dome with the ball and cross above it symbolic of London’s steadfastness down the centuries and its endurance during the Second World War. When it was newly completed, in the early eighteenth century, it seemed breathtaking and unlike any other cathedral or church in Britain. Today's building is not the first to occupy the site, for this has been a place of Christian worship for 1,400 years. The medieval Cathedral, with a tower and spire soaring above the city, was at the time one of the wonders of Europe. Beautifully illustrated with rare items from city and cathedral archives, and glorious colour photography of today's building and its treasures, St Paul’s Cathedral: 1,400 Years at the Heart of London tells of St Paul’s fascinating history. Dr Ann Saunders is Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and Honorary Fellow of University College, London, former Editor of the Costume Society and Editor of the London Topographical Society. Her publications include The Art and Architecture of London: An Illustrated Guide and a history of the Merchant Taylor’s Society.

masterpieces of Indian Art over 5000 years

• Exquisite packaging - the book is placed within a handcrafted box with a magnetic flap

5000 Years of Indian Art demystifies the story of Indian art spread over the millennia. This visually stunning book offers a panoramic view of Indian art from pre-historic times to the contemporary period. The absorbing narrative woven around the wide ambit of the creative continuum links different predominant artistic genres like prehistoric art, ancient Indian art of Vedic and Buddhist traditions, temple art, Mughal miniature painting, colonial art, modern Indian art, and contemporary art that were prevalent in different eras instead of formally demarcated historical periods. The illustrated tale encompasses the entire gamut ranging from the earliest primitive markings on stones, caves, and frescoes to exquisite paintings, sculptures, modern photography, and finely crafted artefacts to media-inspired work, popular installations, and other forms of contemporary art. The book displays around 200 select masterpieces of art sourced from museums, galleries, and private collections around India and the world that celebrate Indian art. The history of Indian art is as old as the civilisation itself and every major period of history has given it newer modes of expression and forms of art. This book successfully captures all the myriad influences that have enriched Indian art over the years.

Art

• Illustrates around 120 painted picture scrolls, mostly from the second half of the 20th century

For over 2000 years artists travelled throughout India, using painted picture scrolls to spread stories from the great Indian epics, as well as a wealth of stories about regional Gods and heroes and moral tales, amongst the most illiterate rural population. In the hands of the painters and singers, the picture scrolls became a portable cinema, projection screens for mythical knowledge and an incentive to listen to the songs whilst looking at the scrolls. In the same way that other oral art forms have dwindled and lost significance, the picture scroll artists also lost their public and their income. However, in the east of India - in West Bengal and Jharkhand - two closely related but distinctive picture scroll traditions have been upheld: the patua and the jadopatia. Political changes, technical innovations and social turmoil brought both these traditions face to face with the necessity to develop new survival strategies too. Accompanies an exhibition at the Ethnographic Museum of the University of Zurich, Switzerland, from 30th August 2012.

contemporary dealer in Chinese and other Asian art A Dealer's Hand serves as both a personal history of the evolving Chinese art market and a catalogue of Chinese art illustrated with over 500 objects

As the West awakes, with some apprehension, to the economic power of that once-supine dragon, China, this book is a timely reminder that its material culture has never failed to entrance and amaze those looking in from outside, no less over the 50 years covered here than in the more distant past. Giuseppe Eskenazi is the pre-eminent expert and dealer in Chinese art and therefore wellplaced to cast light on one aspect of this cultural relationship. Hajni Elias is a highly experienced researcher in the field. Together they have woven a narrative with several strands: Giuseppe's progression from young boy in Constantinople to dozens of Chinese art dealers, enlivened by reminiscence and anecdote; an overview of the market for Chinese art in the West and the part played in it by scholars, dealers, auction houses, museums and collectors; and a fabulous pictorial record of hundreds of the marvellous works of art that have passed through the Eskenazi Gallery's doors.

Versatile Cooking and Living Italian Grazia Giuliani

• Wonderfully old-fashioned recipes are revisited and updated, celebrating the versatility that's at the very heart of Italian cuisine

In Italy, one cooks a family meal and everyone in the family eats that meal. With chapters dedicated to the journeys that have been experienced by her family, Grazia Giulini captures in Versatile the discovery of seasonal variety, and the colours and scents of dishes that they have enjoyed together. Italian cuisine is regional rather than national and often there are several interpretations of a single recipe. Throughout the book, the theme of versatility is further enhanced when a family adopt a recipe, they take the destiny of a recipe into their own hands, shaping and serving yet more versions of a ‘classic’ dish across the generations. Growing up with homemade jams, preserves, pickles, fresh pasta and cakes, as well as shopping at local markets and handling fruit and vegetables, are all part of a knowledge that Grazia gradually picked up from her mother. It was family time that would develop into them enjoying cooking together and culminated in a meal eaten together. This book is her way of suggesting that creating awareness in children about what they put in their mouths could be the start of a more adventurous and, in the future, educated palate. As well as simple recipes that children can prepare for the family, the book features an entire chapter dedicated to the many celebrated special occasions that see Italians gather around large tables with family and friends. ‘Le Feste’ (special occasions) are another wonderful 'excuse' to rejoice with plenty of delicious food, fine wine and delightful company. In addition to her own recipes and those handed down to her by her mother, this book also includes recipes passed on by other members of Grazia's family and who share her love for food.

• Pascal Barbot is one of the most highly-acclaimed chefs in the world. His discretion only serves to heighten interest in his work. This long-awaited book is the first time he shares his vision of food and his recipes

In this beautiful cookbook Pascal Barbot, one of the most reputed French chefs, reveals his concept of cooking in the restaurant he created with Christophe Rohat in 2000: the three-star Michelin restaurant L’Astrance. In a series of about 50 “narrative recipes” he describes how and where he found the inspiration for his recipes, how he finds his products, how he uses, prepares and cooks them. These recipes are completed by texts by Chihiro Masui. For each menu she gives her tasting impressions that serve as an introduction for the dishes presented in the book. The products used in the recipes, magnificently photographed by Richard Haughton and often little-known in the West, are presented alongside each dish. In order to allow the home cook to recreate a bit of “haute gastronomie” at home, Pascal Barbot reveals secrets of his basic recipes in the deluxe version of the book, in a 64-page separate booklet.

The Pleasantness of Wine: The Method for Tasting Luca Maroni This volume explains the scientific and simple wine tasting method created in 1995 by Luca Maroni. The method, shareable by anyone, is based on the logical principle that the “Quality of a Wine equals the Pleasantness of its Taste.” It is not necessary to be a skilled sommelier to enjoy a glass of good wine and it is not true that only wine professionals can understand or describe excellent wines: as wines talk to senses anyone can hear and comprehend what they say. Curiosity, love for wine, passion and commitment drove Luca Maroni to the creation of the original tasting method explained. It is not by chance that he wrote the entry "Wine Tasting" for the Italian Treccani Encyclopaedia: the plain reading of the method develops evaluation abilities of anyone. In the volume, together with the method, a few technical indications for wine tasters and a basic glossary of wine jargon are included. ISBN: 9788887631159 Lm Srl edizione 150 x 210mm. 160pp. 13 b&w. Every page informs the person having the birthday which animal is their own particular guide through life: it might be a hippo or it might be a worm. There's a barmy verse for each sign of the zodiac: if you're one of the lucky 7 billion people who have a birthday that happens to fall on one of the 365(6) days of the year, then this is the book for you. There are people who will not be able to use this book: these are the minority who believe we have 2 or more birthdays in a year. Simon Drew is hoping to create a book for them but it may take a while.
