This construction ranks among the most famous buildings of industrial architecture and is known around the world. But Behrens also developed AEG’s logo and corporate design long before this concept actually existed. He thus established a consistent and standardized visual appearance for all products and marketing materials, ranging from the company’s letterhead to its advertisements. ounting and housing of works of art on paper have always had an important influence on both the survival and the appreciation of the work. Many dangers of a physical, biological and chemical nature await unprotected works of art on paper and specialist mounting provides the primary way of safeguarding them. Also, since the way in which works are presented to the public affects their perception of them, mounting of works of art can contribute significantly to the success or failure of an exhibition. A variety of problems, solutions, past practice and future developments in the mounting, storage and display of artworks on paper are considered in this volume of thirtyone articles presented at a conference at the British Museum. These include the significance of mounting in the historical study of prints and drawings, the preventive care of paper artifacts, their aesthetic presentation and the management of paper collections.

he Flemish painter Jean Brusselmans (1884-1953) was a contemporary of artists such as Constant Permeke and Gustave De Smet. He began his artistic career at the height of Flemish Expressionism, but he was far more than a pure Expressionist. His ultimate goal was to reveal the harmonic order of things. Brusselmans’ oeuvre cannot easily be categorized. He continuously searched for a refined, authentic art, for the correct proportions and for the perfect balance between figuration and abstraction. Brusselmans reduced reality to its essence. Profoundly influenced by, amongst other things, Belgian abstract artists, constructivists, Cézanne’s structural use of color and the objective idiom of Le Corbusier, Jean Brusselmans stands out as one of the most original artists of Belgian modernism. His innovative style was, and still is, a source of inspiration for many contemporary artists. This book focuses on the period 1931-1949, in which Brusselmans developed a highly personal style and idiom. Gradually assembling a lifetime’s work, Bertman’s sculptural creations encompass over 100 works from five decades. The sculptures bear testimony to a boundless energy and the creativity of a Renaissance man, both an artist and a renowned architect. This book delves into process, meaning and interpretation of Bertman’s sculptures, shedding light on his creative practice and analyzing each work, while also listening to the artist’s voice. He is best known for his whimsical mechanical sculptures. ames Bishop can be called the only real painter of his generation still alive. He has developed a unique, poetic, and sensitive visual vocabulary, and describes himself as “an Abstract Expressionist of the quieter kind.” Although Bishop began his career with stronger colors on large canvases, which speak for themselves, he soon turned to earth tones, and then later greys in square, mostly unmodified, smaller formats. This tendency toward reduction has remained constant from the 1960s until just recently, especially with regard to individual works on paper. Bishop has been on a persistent search for an aesthetic balance among opposing factors: drawing and painting, opacity and transparence, two and three dimensions, open forms and simple tectonic elements. In his work he has succeeded in compellingly interweaving these opposing forces into a subtle tonal relationship, creating a miniature-like, intimate aura.
