a+u June issue features Adolf Loos from last month’s issue with Mr. Yoshio Sakurai as our guest editor. The May issue introduced 32 residences and for this month’s issue 36 various works from interior to urban city, divided into 4 chapters: Residential Addition and Alteration Plans, Interior Design, Collective Housing, Mixed-used Facilities, are presented.

According to Mr. Sakurai, there were scarcely any opportunity to further understand the space for collective housing and mixused facilities since most of them are unbuilt projects and the materials available for research are inadequate. Nevertheless, new models, drawings and CGs created based on photos, original sketches, application drawing documents and drawings done by previous researchers, provided a deeper understanding that Loos complex 3-dimensional spaces was not only seen in his residences, but also in a variety of typology. In addition to that, the beginning of this issue includes maps and a chronology list of all projects introduced in this and last month issue. (a+u)

The previous issue of a+u (18:05) was devoted to the houses and villas of Adolf Loos. These projects were designed for industrialists and intellectuals – prosperous and progressive individuals who were receptive to new ideas. They are deservedly renowned as fortunate challenges that broke new ground.

Nevertheless, they reflect only a very limited segment of society.

Loos sought to establish a legitimate place for architecture in the context of modern society, which of course meant more than simply creating private spaces for the privileged classes. If we assume that his object was to discover urban and architectural expressions that would be valid for modern society as a whole, then to understand his entire oeuvre we need to consider his work in other building types. Across various scales and program types, from renovations that adapted living spaces for modern urban life to commercial projects in harmony with the growth and evolution of the city and residential projects for new and low-income urban residents, Loos proposed answers to the problems faced by the modern city.

Loos announced his program in newspaper articles and his own magazine Das Andere (1903). In an effort to understand architecture from the viewpoint of the city and society, he offered criticism, proposals, and polemics directed at turn-ofthe-century Vienna. Examining his ideas about the proper role of architecture in the city is essential to a better understanding of his complete oeuvre. Until now, his work on urban planning and larger projects has received only limited or sporadic attention, which may not be surprising in view of the fact that the Loos House on Michaelerplatz is virtually the only project in those fields that he completed. But this issue hopes to show that, like the reputation of these proposals as secondary, this comparative neglect is hardly justified.

The issue begins with Loos’s urban plans for Vienna. Then it takes up a number of unrealized projects, selected for the light they shed on Loos’s conception of form and design. They include Expansion and Management Plans for the City Center of Vienna (See pp. 138–139), a pair of projects with symbolic significance for their locations (Gartenbau-gründe Project: pp.

142–145, Multfunctional Building in Tianjin: pp. 170–171), office buildings (Office Project in Paris: pp. 164–165, The Chicago Tribune Column: pp. 172–173) and hotels which are open to the city (Friedrichstraße Hotel: pp. 140–141, Hotel in Paris: pp. 162–163, Grand Hotel Babylon: pp. 166–169). It also presents housing projects that demonstrate his dedication to ideals of livability and the economics of space for both the newly prosperous bourgeoisie and lower-income citizens, in line with his perspective on class structure in modern capitalist societies.

It should be stressed that whether in the city or the suburbs, Loos devised new solutions and attractive spatial proposals.

For residences, Loos achieved eloquent results through renovations as well as new architecture. In fact, the first work described as a Raumplan in Kulka’s edition of Loos’s works is the renovation of Villa Strasser (See pp. 36–41), one indication that renovations and expansions are an important part of his oeuvre. As in his detached house projects, the themes are materials and the Raumplan – the provision of diverse spatial experiences via movement through space and displacement with respect to formal axes. In the case of masonry architecture, it was relatively easy to add an additional setback level. In some cases, the existing structure was completely enveloped, and in others a small change in circulation was enough to dramatically transform the space.

Commercial and housing interiors are another key to understanding Loos. All of his works in this category have both private realms and public spaces in the context of the city. They illustrate Loos’s predilection for designs that are satisfying on the interior while revealing little on the exterior. As spaces immediately proximate to the human body, these enclosed interiors are architecturally integral to the people who come into contact with them. They are also are the spaces most amenable to expressions of individual cultural backgrounds. They allow us to see the kind of space that results when the precepts of Loos’s essay on cladding, “Das Prinzip der Bekleidung”, are followed exactly. This group of works is a cluster of gems which we would like to introduce with as many photos as possible.

See the sources list (See p. 187) for the sources used to create drawings. When it was not possible to decide a feature, it was sometimes omitted and sometimes given a different expression.

As far as possible, existing works were photographed on site. Unrealized projects, especially housing and commercial buildings, were visualized as far as possible with models and digital renderings. When a drawing contains contractions, an explanation is called for, so comments were added.

He received MA from the University of Tokyo in 1987. The Oeuvre of Adolf Loos Yoshio Sakurai

The previous issue of a+u (18:05) was devoted to the houses and villas of Adolf Loos. These projects were designed for industrialists and intellectuals – prosperous and progressive individuals who were receptive to new ideas. They are deservedly renowned as fortunate challenges that broke new ground.

Nevertheless, they reflect only a very limited segment of society.

Loos sought to establish a legitimate place for architecture in the context of modern society, which of course meant more than simply creating private spaces for the privileged classes. If we assume that his object was to discover urban and architectural expressions that would be valid for modern society as a whole, then to understand his entire oeuvre we need to consider his work in other building types. Across various scales and program types, from renovations that adapted living spaces for modern urban life to commercial projects in harmony with the growth and evolution of the city and residential projects for new and low-income urban residents, Loos proposed answers to the problems faced by the modern city.

Loos announced his program in newspaper articles and his own magazine Das Andere (1903). In an effort to understand architecture from the viewpoint of the city and society, he offered criticism, proposals, and polemics directed at turn-ofthe-century Vienna. Examining his ideas about the proper role of architecture in the city is essential to a better understanding of his complete oeuvre. Until now, his work on urban planning and larger projects has received only limited or sporadic attention, which may not be surprising in view of the fact that the Loos House on Michaelerplatz is virtually the only project in those fields that he completed. But this issue hopes to show that, like the reputation of these proposals as secondary, this comparative neglect is hardly justified.

The issue begins with Loos’s urban plans for Vienna. Then it takes up a number of unrealized projects, selected for the light they shed on Loos’s conception of form and design. They include Expansion and Management Plans for the City Center of Vienna (See pp. 138–139), a pair of projects with symbolic significance for their locations (Gartenbau-gründe Project: pp.

142–145, Multfunctional Building in Tianjin: pp. 170–171), office buildings (Office Project in Paris: pp. 164–165, The Chicago Tribune Column: pp. 172–173) and hotels which are open to the city (Friedrichstraße Hotel: pp. 140–141, Hotel in Paris: pp. 162–163, Grand Hotel Babylon: pp. 166–169). It also presents housing projects that demonstrate his dedication to ideals of livability and the economics of space for both the newly prosperous bourgeoisie and lower-income citizens, in line with his perspective on class structure in modern capitalist societies.

It should be stressed that whether in the city or the suburbs, Loos devised new solutions and attractive spatial proposals.

For residences, Loos achieved eloquent results through renovations as well as new architecture. In fact, the first work described as a Raumplan in Kulka’s edition of Loos’s works is the renovation of Villa Strasser (See pp. 36–41), one indication that renovations and expansions are an important part of his oeuvre. As in his detached house projects, the themes are materials and the Raumplan – the provision of diverse spatial experiences via movement through space and displacement with respect to formal axes. In the case of masonry architecture, it was relatively easy to add an additional setback level. In some cases, the existing structure was completely enveloped, and in others a small change in circulation was enough to dramatically transform the space.

Commercial and housing interiors are another key to understanding Loos. All of his works in this category have both private realms and public spaces in the context of the city. They illustrate Loos’s predilection for designs that are satisfying on the interior while revealing little on the exterior. As spaces immediately proximate to the human body, these enclosed interiors are architecturally integral to the people who come into contact with them. They are also are the spaces most amenable to expressions of individual cultural backgrounds. They allow us to see the kind of space that results when the precepts of Loos’s essay on cladding, “Das Prinzip der Bekleidung”, are followed exactly. This group of works is a cluster of gems which we would like to introduce with as many photos as possible.

See the sources list (See p. 187) for the sources used to create drawings. When it was not possible to decide a feature, it was sometimes omitted and sometimes given a different expression.

As far as possible, existing works were photographed on site. Unrealized projects, especially housing and commercial buildings, were visualized as far as possible with models and digital renderings. When a drawing contains contractions, an explanation is called for, so comments were added.

The client was a businessman who launched a felt-making company and had no family. He enjoyed collecting paintings and loved the organ, to the extent that he invited an organist to his house. Loos added a music room in accordance with his tastes.

The frontage of the site is narrow, so Loos added volume on the garden side, enriched the interior space, and designed a terrace overlooking the garden.

Visitors arrive at a hall directly in front of them after ascending a white marble staircase and a heavily imposing entrance staircase with door and window frames. The hall is composed of thick oak beams, and replica sculptures surround a fireplace, said to be from the Renaissance period, facing the entrance.

The area around the hall was planned as a bar. There is a dining room on the right side facing the hall, with a smooth wall of Pavonazzo marble and a flat white ceiling. Beyond the current dining hall was originally a veranda protruding outwards, but it was transformed into an indoor winter garden.

The music room, located at the end of the axis on the left side facing the hall, is part of the addition, with a height of 4.19m and a floor area of 12 × 5 m, according to the drawing for which an application was filed, and a pipe organ on the shorter side in the rear. Among Loos’s works, this one is characterized by highly diverse materials and rich coloration. The walls, decorated with paintings and tapestries collected by the client, have a smooth finish of Cipollino marble, and a frieze encircles all four walls of the room at the top. The ceiling is latticed, and the floor is finished with various inlaid animals. Along the walls of the room are seats for enjoying music. The organ is currently located in the Technisches Museum Wien, where it was later shipped to avoid being damaged in World War II. (For details see the official application drawings on pp.174–177)

Villa Mandle Vienna, Austria

This is an expansion and renovation of a house in a quiet residential area in 14th district of Vienna. The interior spaces have a dynamic planned flow of movement that conveys the germination of the Raumplan idea. After entering, visitors change direction three times and ascend stairs to reach the hall.

In addition, on the way to the hall there are routes that branch off to reach rooms by way of small internal spiral staircases. The bedroom is approached by an independent route, and the route from the hall to the room on the mezzanine forms a gallery that acts as a stage overlooking the hall on the way.

The salon and dining room are connected to the hall by a strong axis that creates an expanded space with added volume, giving rise to a pairing relationship. The salon walls are mainly finished with oak, but the walls of the dining room are composed of columnar forms of Cipollino marble and smooth oak wall surfaces. The upper floors consist only of private rooms, with a terrace on the garden side. There is an observation tower at the southeastern corner terrace.
