PROFILE Gisue Hariri and Mojgan Hariri are the cofounders and Principal Directors of Hariri & Hariri Architecture, a New York–based multi-disciplinary architecture and design firm established in 1986 by Iranian-born Cornell-educated sisters. Today they are celebrated as two of the most accomplished women in American architecture and design and are described as one of the most progressive and out-of-the-box firms currently working in the United States. Their projects run the gamut from luxury residential developments and hotels to bathroom accessories to single-family houses to high-concept, high-tech experiments. For the Hariris, design is a holistic, boundary-less enterprise ranging from master planning and architecture to interior design, furniture, lighting, product design, and jewelry.

They have devoted time to teaching since 1987, to emphasize the importance of academic and philosophical discourse within the context of a professional practice, and have been Adjunct Professors of Architecture at Columbia University, a Visiting Critic at Cornell University, McGill University, and Parsons School of Design.

Hariri & Hariri have been honored with numerous awards, including the 2015 American Architecture Award from The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, and the career achievement award

by PAAIA. They received the 2005 Academy Award for Architecture from American Academy of Arts and Letters. They were inducted into the Design Hall of Fame in 2006 by Interior Design magazine and in 2010 were named as one of today’s greatest talents in Architecture & Design in AD-100 by the prestigious Architectural Digest. In 2014, they were included on the DESIGN POWER-100 list by Surface Magazine.

The firm’s work with leading international corporations, developers, fashion labels, along with cultural, institutional and high-profile private clients demonstrates the firm’s multi-faceted practice with an acclaimed Swarovski ‘Crystal Palace Collection’ chandelier, ‘Kryptonite’ couture jewelry collection; and the recent BEST OF YEAR ‘Crystalline Bath Collection’ for AFNY. Through dedication to the research and construction of innovative ideas, the firm has been commissioned for a number of significant projects that have been featured in numerous exhibitions and publications worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art’s landmark Un-private House exhibiton, the National Building Museum in Washington D.C., the Deutsches Architektur Museum in Frankfurt, and the Museu d’ Art Contemporani de Barcelona, and recently at the Nancy Hoffman Gallery in New York City.

TAGHKANIC VILLA A spectacular 140 acres (57 hectares) of land in Columbia County, New York is the site of this project. The scale and the mere beauty of the nature required a careful study of landscape and a master plan for sitting the structures while simultaneously maintaining much of its rugged and rural beauty. The master plan includes a main house, a guest house, large shed (for land maintenance equipment), vegetable garden and a dipping pool.

Conceptually the whole project and the main house are designed as a collection of volumes, which are a modern reinterpretation of farm structures, barn and storage sheds one finds on the surrounding farm lands. Just like the old farm structures, the house volumes are abstract sculptural forms with walls slanted simulating the swayed barns ready to fall down. The space and gap between each volume and structure creates an intimate setting similar to the farm settings nearby.

It is however the integration into the land contours, engagement of the rock croppings, and use of green technology that is making this country home a smart getaway from New York City. Thirteen large solar panels (12 feet x 13 feet [3.7 meters x 4 meters]), installed like works of art in the landscape, provide the required electricity for the house.

Deep geothermal wells assist with heating and cooling. The mechanical parts of the house are monitored by a computer that reports back to the owner around the clock. Temperature, alarm system, shades, and lighting are also all controlled by the owner via a touch of a button.

Finally it is the use of sustainable materials, green design, cutting-edge technologies combined with simple pod-like structures wrapped in ipe wood, composed around a swimming pool with two large stone wrapped fireplaces (outdoor and indoor) that make this country house smart and special.

ALVAND TOWER This office tower is located in the dense urban fabric in the center of Tehran. A simple rectilinear plan covers the whole site in a mid block with existing structures on two sides and an alleyway access to a building in the back.

What makes this 12-story office tower iconic, is its double skin exterior.

The inner skin is mostly glass. The outer skin is a shading device made of composite aluminum panels fabricated with the aid of laser cutting and bending technology over a steel structure. The pattern chosen for this outer façade is inspired by cosmic symbol and motif of a mandala.

This symbol is derived from the Persian belief that intersection between circle and a square is the geometric manifestation of paradise. This geometry is abstracted, repeated and folded on two sides of the outer facade. The outer skin acts as a brisoleil, shielding the interiors from direct sun providing a healthy and sustainable working environment.

SITE

ARGENTINA SQUARE

The two skins are approximately 2.5 feet (76 centimeters) apart. With the aid of LED backlighting in this cavity, the whole structure glows at nights like a beacon of light. The geometric openings in the outer façade turn from negative into positive silhouettes, reminiscent of Persian blue mosaic work on earlier structures and domes.

The Alvand Tower presents a balance between cultural identity and essential need for modernity. A dialogue between and interior and exterior, public and private, old and new are all debated and explored in this structure.

The circulation core occupies the north side of the building and is faced with stone tiles with small openings marking the entrance to the building. At the ground level the space is divided into a retail space and a small entrance lobby with ceiling articulation inspired by Persian squinches (intersection between circle and square) continuing the concept in to the inside.
