Dear Readers, Dear Booksellers, Every publisher’s catalogue is, in the end, a journey – through the books that compose it and through the many ways in which art, photography, and memory recount the past, present, and future. The new titles we are presenting for 2025–2026 mark the stages of this journey, born from encounters between different perspectives on the intimate, historical, and universal aspects of existence. Universal like the photographs in the Nini-Treadwell Collection, which many readers discovered in 2020 thanks to Loving: A Photographic History of Men in Love, 1850s–1950s. The success of that first publication, in many ways surprising, has led us to publish a second volume, with hundreds of new, previously unseen images, from the origins of photography to the 1950s: Loving II: More Photographic History of Men in Love, 1850s–1950s. The collection of anonymous photographs of men in love has grown to include more than four thousand images, and the emotions captured – in the context of a society that condemned homosexuality – still manage to move us after so many years. The warmth of Loving II is echoed by the rigour of Bruno Sassarone. With Paris, he pays homage to his city, transfigured by the shadows and lights of its black-and-white forms, redrawn with an abstract approach that offers a radical perceptual experience. Another master of the lens, Luigi Spina, following the unique adventures of Interno pompeiano and the Canova series, once again leads us into antiquity, turning his gaze upon a place that unites past and future like few others: the Campi Flegrei (Phlegraean Fields), the “burning land” forged by the power of nature and the determination of humankind, who for centuries have here defied the precariousness of life. The attention that 5 Continents Editions has always devoted to African art and Art Brut is renewed this year with several titles. West African Combs offers a complete overview of Mina and Samir Borro’s collection: combs which, far from being simple accessories, become miniature sculptures, dense with beauty and meaning, revealed to us by Alain-Michel Boyer in one of the last texts he wrote before his passing. Swiss Art Brut, on the other hand, celebrates an important milestone – the fiftieth anniversary of the Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne, from its origins to today – in a retrospective volume with unpublished texts by Jean Dubuffet. Our journey finally reaches contemporaneity with Roots / Racines, which presents the splendid collection of Garance Primat in a dialogue between art, nature, and the cosmos; and with More than Meets the Eye, an exploration of another collection, that of CBH Compagnie Bancaire Helvétique, which celebrates the energy of modern and contemporary African art in a volume curated by Jean-Yves Marin. The books we have chosen to create, with the care, respect, and passion that distinguish us, would never have come into being without the trust placed in us by artists, collectors, and institutions. A special thank you goes to them and to all those who share with us a love of beauty. Eric Ghysels Publisher

L OV I N G I I M ORE P H OTO GR A P HIC HISTO RY O F MEN IN LOVE, 1850s –1950s Texts by Hugh Nini & Neal Treadwell With an essay by Laura Leonelli
220 x 280 mm, 336 pages 320 four-colour illustrations Hardback English edition € 58.00 | US$ 70.00 | £ 52.00 ISBN: 9788874394456
Publication date: 14 October 2025
Loving: A Photographic History of Men in Love, 1850s–1950s, was published in 2020 at the height of the pandemic. Despite that, the first US printing sold out in six weeks, and the response to the book – available in five languages – was overwhelming and emotional. Five years and multiple printings later, Loving remains a best-seller. For Loving, the collectors drew from two thousand photographs; now, in 2025, more than twenty-five years after they purchased their first picture, the collection has four thousand images. It seems logical then – even necessary – to publish a new volume with all new photographs from those acquired since 2019. Loving II continues with more stunning vintage vernacular photographs of romantic male couples, with all the emotional power of the first book in intact. This new selection continues the story of the unadulterated joy – longed for by all of us and recognisable to anyone – of being in love. As with the first Loving, these photographs and what they convey, whether directly in an embrace or more subtly in a furtive touch, move – in fact change – those who encounter them. Indeed, anyone who has ever loved will identify with the elation – and peace – that these couples share. The collecting criteria have not changed: starting from the earliest years of photography and continuing through the 1950s, the Nini-Treadwell archive includes daguerreotypes, silver gelatin prints, tintypes, ambrotypes, snapshots, and many more – a historical capsule of a century of photographic technique. The subjects come from all walks of life: soldiers, farmers, students, young and old, poor and affluent. Their creation happened between loving couples from all around the world. Each photo is the story of two told in an instant.
Native Texans, collectors Hugh Nini & Neal Treadwell are arts professional currently living in New York City. Their collection has grown over a period of twenty-five years to include more than four thousand images. Laura Leonelli is a journalist, photographer, and photography historian who contributes to the cultural supplement of Il Sole 24 Ore, Arte, and AD. She has published several books and has studied and collected anonymous, or “vernacular”, photography for many years.

B RU N O S ASSA RO NE, PARIS Photographs by Bruno Sassarone Preface by Aurore Clément

Paris – a photographic book with the city as its theme – takes an abstract approach to depicting the city, while retaining a direct relationship with reality. It is part of the tradition of modernist photography, but it distinguishes itself by the perfect appearance of digitally retouched images. Shadows play a key role in simplifying reality, dissociating locations from their classical visual representation. The economy of form thus created enables the depiction of Paris to be radically transformed, going beyond the customary descriptive task of photography. At first glance, the viewer perceives the overall contrast of the image, with only the light lines standing out against the shadows. As the eye gradually adapts, the details in the shadows become apparent, introducing a second way of reading the photograph and enriching the way it is perceived. Paris is thus viewed anew, moving from shadow to abstraction.
Bruno Sassarone, born in 1975, lives and works in Paris. He holds a master’s degree in law, but interrupted his legal career after winning Photo magazine’s 2005 Canon Prize and the Front Cover Prize of the January/February 2006 issue. Since 2008, his work has been exhibited in galleries in Paris and Brussels. As a competition winner, his work was included in exhibitions in Paris, at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in 2008 (SFR Jeunes Talents), and in Saint-Tropez in 2019 (Fondation Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque). Studio Harcourt Paris held an exhibition featuring more than sixty of his photographs in 2022.
Publication date: 10 November 2025 Aurore Clément is a French film and theatre actress. She was discovered by Louis Malle and has posed throughout her career for some of the world’s leading photographers, such as Peter Lindbergh, Richard Avedon, and David Bailey. A book of her photographs taken by Peter Wyss, Une femme sans fin s’enfuit, written by Mathieu Terence, was published by the(M) éditions in 2002. Aurore met Bruno Sassarone at one of his Paris exhibitions and kindly agreed to write the preface to his book on Paris, as a token of her friendship and interest in his work.

VENEZIA B E YON D THE ICO N Photographs by Alejandro Merizalde Text by Luis Pérez-Oramas

Alejandro Merizalde began photographing in Venice in 2008. In his early visits he found the city stiflingly overcrowded, but during a brief winter trip a few years later, the overcast skies and foggy atmosphere allowed him to draw out Venice’s legendary beauty without the disruptions of mass tourism. In 2013 he started experimenting with longer exposures to eliminate the distractions of human activity and enable him to concentrate on his architectural compositions. This shift in approach was gradual, but it helped him realise that he was no longer interested in recording iconic features like St Mark’s Basilica, the Bridge of Sighs, and the gondola, to name a few. From then on, he dropped the predictable locations and buildings and trained his lens on the Venice lagoon and areas of the city where Venetians actually spend their lives.
Alejandro Merizalde was born in Ecuador in 1979 and has spent sixteen years developing his wide-ranging Venice photographic project. His first book, 100 Churches of Venice and the Lagoon, was published by Damiani in 2021. His second title, Thirteen Venetian Gasoline Stations, a limited-edition art book conceived in tribute to artist Ed Ruscha, was published in 2023. He currently lives and works in Connecticut with his wife. Luis Pérez-Oramas was born in Caracas in 1960. He is a poet and art historian, holding a PhD in art history from the École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris (1994). He was the curator of Latin American art at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from 2003 to 2017, and is the author of several exhibition catalogues, essays on art, social issues, and political criticism, as well as nine books of poetry.

Sea, Sand, and Land is a book by Belgian photographer Edouard Janssens, who is renowned for his innovative projects (the technologically ambitious Stratos-Sphere, the sequence of portraits in 1 to 100 Years, etc.). In it, the artist presents fifty-two black-and-white photos taken along the North Sea coast of Belgium. These minimalist, poetic images, featuring dunes, changing skies, and sharp horizons, make up a unique visual journey. Far removed from standard postcards, Edouard Janssens’s compositions reveal the discreet beauty of these spaces between land and sea. Each page invites us to contemplate the subtlety of the light and the graphic impact of the landscape. The effect of reducing the image to essentials is not cold at all; on the contrary, it creates a meditative, almost intimate atmosphere. Sea, Sand and Land will appeal to anyone with a passion for art, nature, and travel. This book is sure to find a place on contemporary photography shelves as well as those devoted to coastal walks. Elegantly bound and printed, this book is a treasure trove of artistic discoveries and emotions: an invitation to step outside and explore the Belgian coast with a fresh outlook.
This title is available only at the publishing house and on the website of the photographer https://edouardjanssens.com
Edouard Janssens is a Belgian photographer. He was born in 1961, and his work sensitively examines the human condition and the mysteries of existence. Publication date: 8 June 2026
Everything Flows explores the interconnectedness of water, time, and artistic creation. Inspired by Heraclitus’s philosophy of constant flow, the book captures the essence of sculptor Filippo Tincolini’s work, reflecting the continuous flow of thought and gesture from the initial concept to the finished sculpture. Water, a symbol of this perpetual movement, becomes a tangible element in Laura Veschi’s photography, its “sound” echoing the creative process and the transformation of materials. The project also highlights the enduring nature of artistic tradition, where ancient skills such as stonemasonry are reinterpreted in contemporary art. Just as water shapes stone over time, tradition influences artists like Tincolini, bridging past and present. Veschi’s blackand-white photographs document Tincolini’s journey, capturing the evolution of form and the interplay between artist, material, and the silent narrative of water. Each image represents a moment in this constant transformation and celebrates the enduring power of artistic creation.
Laura Veschi, who specialises in photographing artists’ work, is the official photographer of LITIX. She is passionate about art, crafts, and travelling to discover different cultures. A graduate of the University of Florence in educational sciences, she became a photographer in 2016 and trained at the Marangoni School (Florence) and Spazi Fotografici (Sarzana). She collaborates with Avant Arte (London) and had her first solo exhibition, “Anime Resistenti”, in 2023. Her publications include Ritorno a casa and Sentire la forma. She participated in Paratissima 2023 (Turin). Roberto Spinetta, marketing and communications consultant and journalist since 1992, is an advocate of humanistic marketing. In 2024 he co-authored La Spezia’s successful bid to become Italy’s Capital of Culture in 2027. An expert in graphic design, he has edited numerous publications. Spinetta has organised art and music events, including the 2024 National Antiques Exhibition in Sarzana. He directed RESedizioni from 2007 to 2012.

Campi Flegrei, near Naples, is a seismically active landscape that attracts, stimulates, and challenges. It seduces the soul, engages perception, and demands to be interpreted rather than merely registered. People have chosen to live amongst these unique geological and volcanic features, weaving the fabric of human occupation and taming a land in perpetual transformation, one of the harshest yet most enchanting environments. Mankind has matched its own impermanence against the earth’s inevitable and unrestrained convulsions, in the process hewing out some of the most glorious examples of human endeavour, such as Cumae, the oldest Greek colony in the Western Mediterranean, the bustling Roman port of Puteoli, and the “dolce vita” savoured in the baths and villas dotted around the Bay of Baiae. Luigi Spina has been exploring this land since 2020, delving into the complex, stratified geography. Key landmarks include places of memory (archaeological sites, monuments, landscapes), which, like true benchmarks of perception, outline the path towards an understanding of a world that links nature, ancient ruins, and the overwhelming presence of mankind. Balanced between mimicry and contradiction, the Campi Flegrei landscape is now blanketed by a dense urban sprawl, where the ancient and the contemporary coexist in a kind of precarious equilibrium, generating a complex socio-cultural state of affairs that is challenging to govern. Spina explores and photographs places such as the Dragonara Cave, the Piscina Mirabilis, the Theatre of Misenum, the Flavian Amphitheatre at Puteoli, the Temple of Apollo on the shores of Lake Avernus, and the Temples of Venus and Diana, as he wanders through the hills above Baiae, finally heading towards Cumae.
Luigi Spina has published several photographic books with 5 Continents Editions, including The Buchner Boxes (2014), Hemba (2017), and Mythical Diary (2017), which explored the Farnese Collection. With the same publisher, he created the Hidden Treasures series: The Farnese Cup, The Alexander Mosaic, Saint Dominic by Niccolò dell’Arca, The Riace Bronzes (2022), the Canova: Four Tempos project (2020–2024), and the sweeping Inside Pompeii project (2023). Fabio Pagano is an archaeologist and the director of the Campi Flegrei Archeological Park.

Manhattan Project is a collection of photographs that capture the evolving landscape of Manhattan’s West Side over the past decade. Exploiting the revelatory power of photography, these images explore a city’s architectural transformation. While Jan Staller’s earlier work focused on industrial decay, these new photographs explore the spread of high-rise construction. By isolating and zooming in on building materials, Staller elevates the ordinary to the extraordinary. The resulting images, reminiscent of drawings or abstract paintings, reveal the hidden beauty and formal qualities of these oftenoverlooked elements. This project reimagines the city not as a monolithic entity, but as a composition of intricate details. It celebrates the interplay of light, form, and texture, inviting viewers to rethink the familiar and discover the artistic potential of the urban environment.
Jan Staller’s photographs span a period of more than forty years and have been exhibited at MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New Museum, the Museum of the City of New York, the High Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. His work is on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, SFMOMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, and other public and private institutions. He has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Hasselblad Corporation. He has published two monographs: Frontier New York (Hudson Hills Press) and On Planet Earth (Aperture). Staller has also worked on assignment for many magazines, including Time, LIFE, Fortune, Forbes, Wired, Discover, Condé Nast Traveler, The New York Times and others. Neil deGrasse Tyson, a renowned astrophysicist, was born in New York City and developed a lifelong passion for astronomy as a child. He studied at both Harvard and Columbia University, and later became the youngest director of the Hayden Planetarium. His research interests include star formation, exploding stars, and the structure of the Milky Way. Known for his ability to make complex scientific concepts accessible,Tyson has authored numerous books and hosted popular television shows such as NOVA ScienceNow. He has received numerous awards and honours, including a NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, and has had an asteroid named after him. Brett Littman, a New Yorker, is senior director of Carpenters Workshop Gallery and former director of the Isamu Noguchi Museum (2018–2023). Over the last sixteen years, he has overseen and organised more than 180 exhibitions, covering visual art, outsider art, crafts, architecture, music, science, and literature; notably, “Frieze Sculpture” at Rockefeller Center (2019–2020). He is also an art critic, lecturer, and essayist, in addition to writing articles for an array of magazines.

Viale Scarampo, in Milan, saw the inauguration in 2025 of the BFF Banking Group’s new headquarters, a building whose transparent airiness and environmental and social sustainability ensure it provides an entirely original contribution to the city’s skyline. Designed by OBR (Open Building Research), the structure places the accent on the brightness of its interior and does not seek to compete in height with the skyscrapers of the nearby City Life district. The book is organised in a series of alternating photographs and text, drawing attention not only to the architectural features and the building’s functional characteristics, but also to the aim of creating a working environment that is intimately linked to its surroundings, in contrast to the traditional view of corporate architecture. Casa BFF is not only the headquarters of a B2B bank, it is also a building that embraces the neighbourhood and the city as a whole, starting with the museum it houses, which is accessible to all and contains the BFF Collection of post-war Italian art. Here the visitor will find works by Valerio Adami, Franco Angeli, Enrico Baj, Alberto Burri, Lucio Del Pezzo, Lucio Fontana, Gianfranco Pardi, Mario Schifano, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Giò Pomodoro and Emilio Tadini. The Bank inaugurated the museum with an exhibition dedicated to Enrico Baj’s series of forty etchings inspired by John Milton’s Paradise Lost. The book does full justice to the exhibition spaces, as well as to the works that hang on the building’s walls.
Christian Greco, director of the Egyptian Museum in Turin, who has always paid close attention to the relationship between museums and citizens, between culture and participation, takes this opportunity to reflect on the role and social function of museums and private collections. Publication date: 9 February 2026 Hans Tuzzi is the author of Metropolis (Rizzoli) and Vanagloria (Bollati Boringhieri), as well as a successful series of detective stories set in Milan that feature Chief Inspector Melis (Bollati Boringhieri). Tuzzi himself keeps his nose to the ground and knows all about the goings-on of the Milan metropolis, and his essay here focuses on the virtual triangle formed by Piazza Giulio Cesare, the site of the former trade fair, and the San Siro racecourse. He employs his subtle, witty turns of phrase to explore urban and social transformation, relating curious and little-known anecdotes about this part of the city.

Racines | Roots is a vibrant art book reflecting the unique vision of a passionate philanthropist, collector, and entrepreneur. Garance Primat unveils a selection of works drawn from the heart of her aesthetic and spiritual journey. For her, art is a life-sustaining force: deep roots nourish our being and link us to nature, allowing us to flourish like a tree. Born into a family responsive to nature and art, she has honed her eye through contact with different cultures during her travels, particularly in Australia and the United States, where she became aware of how everything in the realm of nature was interconnected. This quest inspired her to acquire the Domaine des Étangs in Charente Limousine. With its ability to question the world and shape the future, contemporary art occupies a special place in her eclectic collection, which offers interactions with modern art from around the world, minerals, and wisdom-bearing objects. Garance Primat invites us to trust her sensibility as we explore the universal, where words struggle to grasp the interconnectedness of living things. An original message emerges from the “root” of things, awakening a shared consciousness. This book, built around the etymology of seven key words linked to nature and the universe, is an invitation to let ourselves be carried away by the senses and discover the invisible links that unite us.
Under the guidance of Garance Primat, the Domaine des Étangs in Charente Limousine now welcomes visitors, who come to enjoy art, science, and the environment together. Taking over almost 1,000 hectares of unspoilt countryside that include forests, meadows, ponds, and permaculture gardens, Garance Primat has developed a holistic approach that is committed to preserving biodiversity, promoting rural heritage, and sustaining the arts. The thirteenth-century château and its outbuildings have been restored using traditional skills and local materials, and now host artworks, residencies, exhibitions, and retreats for contemplation. At the heart of this enterprise is contemporary art collection that has grown like a poetic echo of the nature that surrounds it. Adopting as its emblem the dragonfly – a herald of metamorphosis – the Garance Primat Collection has now amassed more than one thousand works that eagerly create links between the major artists of the twentieth century, such as Yves Klein and Pablo Picasso, and the most influential figures in contemporary art: Lee Ufan, Tomás Saraceno, Alicja Kwade, Ólafur Elíasson, Anselm Kiefer, and Richard Long. Bérengère Baucher is the commissioning editor at Presses de la Cité. She holds a PhD in French literature and worked as a teacher-researcher before spending ten years at Éditions Le Robert, first as a lexicographer and then as literary director alongside Alain Rey. Frédéric Lenoir, philosopher and sociologist, holds a doctorate from the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS). Author of around fifty works translated into some twenty languages, he also writes for the theatre, television (documentaries) and graphic novels. In 2016, he co-founded the foundation and the association SEVE, Savoir Être et Vivre Ensemble, and in 2017 he created the association Ensemble pour les Animaux. In 2024, he founded La Maison des sagesses with the aim of disseminating philosophical knowledge understood as an art of living, in the sense in which the Greeks conceived it. NEW TITLES [29]

The Swiss family-owned banking group CBH Compagnie Bancaire Helvétique SA has been putting together its own art collection for more than fifteen years. Modern and contemporary African art is one of its major themes. The works in this catalogue (paintings, sculptures, photographs) span about a century (1929–2025). All were created by artists who were born, or spent part of their lives, in sub-Saharan Africa. The growing success of the African artists of today undoubtedly stems from the artistic legacy of their ancestors, whose dazzling colours reflect a profoundly original worldview that addresses social and environmental themes. Missionaries and a few colonial administrators with an eye for art identified a number of interesting artists in the 1920s. Although African art – in the Congo, Kenya, and South Africa in particular – developed throughout the twentieth century, recognition only came in the 1960s.The creation of art schools in the continent’s major cities promoted cultural reappropriation through new types of expression based on an encounter between traditional African forms and modern aesthetic sensibilities emerging in the new conurbations. Artistic movements burgeoning at the turn of the millennium confirmed and reinforced the vitality of this art. It was a period that saw dynamic figures come to the fore on the global art scene. Contemporary artists turned their attention to the “Black Atlantic” and to the African-American communities shaped by it. Africa is now able to send its own message to the world. As a result, nearly eighty artists are represented in the “More than Meets the Eye” exhibition at the Musée Rath.

Painter, engraver, illustrator, writer, and art critic, Félix Vallotton (1865–1925) is known for the impact of his compositions, which display a rare combination of decorative instinct and graphic wit. His revival of the woodcut in the 1890s quickly established him in the art and literary circles of Paris, and his talent as a prolific illustrator, especially for the press, spread his fame throughout Europe and as far afield as the United States. He illustrated bestsellers such as Poil de Carotte, by Jules Renard, and contributed to the most fashionable avant-garde periodicals of the time, including La Revue Blanche, Le Rire, Le Cri de Paris, L’Assiette au Beurre, and Le Canard Sauvage in Paris; Jugend and Die Insel in Munich and Berlin: The Studio in London; The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine in New York, among others. This book assembles a number of critical essays and a selection of around two hundred reproductions to explore this little-known aspect of Vallotton’s work. It is intended to coincide with the online publication of Félix Vallotton illustrateur. Catalogue raisonné, volume 32 in the Catalogues raisonnés d’artistes suisses series, created by Fondation Félix Vallotton, Lausanne, and Institut suisse pour l’étude de l’art, Lausanne/Zurich (SIK-ISEA).

Laure Pigeon (1882–1965) is one of the leading figures in Art Brut (Outsider Art), along with Aloïse Corbaz and Adolf Wölfli. The Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne probably possesses her entire oeuvre, amounting to more than four hundred works, including writings, notebooks, small-scale drawings, and an extensive series of large compositions in blue ink. These are all part of the corpus of works acquired by Jean Dubuffet, the historic collection around which the museum was founded. In 1978, the Collection de l’Art Brut held the first and only monographic exhibition dedicated to this artist. A new exhibition in 2025 has now been devoted to her exclusively. It offers a representative selection of her striking graphic work, spanning a period of thirty years. Like Madge Gill, Jeanne Tripier, Augustin Lesage, and Raphaël Lonné, Laure Pigeon was a member of the spiritualist fraternity – men and women who feel “selected” to receive messages from the hereafter and claim the deceased are responsible for their creations. The spiritualist’s hand is therefore guided and merely executes what the spirits dictate. The catalogue, in French and English, includes essays by several authors and a large number of colour illustrations.
Anic Zanzi has been a curator at the Collection de l’Art Brut since 2003. An art historian with a degree in public relations, she is in charge of editing the various works published by the institution and organizing exhibitions such as People (2016), Henriette Zéphir (2017), Ernst Kolb (2018), Carlo Zinelli, recto verso (2019), and Michel Nedjar (2023), as well as two Art Brut biennials, Véhicules (2013) and Croyances (2022). Flavie Beuvin is a visual artist with a degree in art and aesthetics. Her art and theoretical work focus on the echoes between the creating body and the body of the work. The concept of “vegetality”, which she developed as part of her academic research and published by Presses Universitaires du Septentrion as Végétalité, Art Brut et féminins, lies at the heart of her aesthetics. She is also extremely keen on drawing, combining it with various other media such as embroidery and collage. Vânia Vaz De Freitas holds a BA in conservation-restoration from the Haute École Arc in Neuchâtel. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in museum studies at the University of Neuchâtel. She has gained experience in preventive conservation through periods spent in various other institutions, notably the Cinémathèque suisse research centre and Maison d’Ailleurs.Vânia also spent time at the Collection de l’Art Brut from 2023 to 2024, working mainly on Laure Pigeon’s oeuvre.

Swiss Art Brut is being published to coincide with an exhibition celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Collection de l’Art Brut. It brings together a wide range of works from the Lausanne museum’s collection that were created by Swiss artists or artists who worked in Switzerland. With Switzerland as the common thread, this publication and the accompanying exhibition highlight the close and lasting ties between the originator of the concept of Art Brut, Jean Dubuffet, and this country. Indeed, it was this close bond that led him to donate his collection of outsider art to the City of Lausanne in order to ensure its preservation and the public’s access to it. The book includes a foreword by writer Metin Arditi and a presentation by Sarah Lombardi, director of the museum and curator of the exhibition, followed by Jean Dubuffet’s own handwritten notes recounting his trip to Switzerland in search of extra-cultural works in the summer of 1945. This previously unpublished document is reproduced here in facsimile. Other authors provide further analyses of the works: Michel Thévoz, the museum’s first director; Lucienne Peiry, who succeeded him until 2011; Andreas Steck, president of the Aloïse Corbaz Association; and Astrid Berglund and Eleanor Philippoz, respectively curator and outreach coordinator at the Collection de l’Art Brut.
Sarah Lombardi is an art historian and has been director of the Collection de l’Art Brut since 2013. She has focused her efforts on raising the profile of the Lausanne institution’s collection, which comprises 70,000 works. Along with this historical approach, she continues to build the museum’s collection by discovering new outsider artists, to whom she dedicates exhibitions and publications. Metin Arditi is the author of a significant body of work, including Le Turquetto (Actes sud, 2011, Jean Giono Prize winner), L’enfant qui mesurait le monde (Grasset, 2016, Mediterranean Prize winner), L’homme qui peignait les âmes (Grasset, 2021, Catholic University of the West Award winner), Tu seras mon père (Grasset, 2022, Machiavelli Prize winner), and Le danseur oriental (Grasset, 2025). He is a Commander of Arts and Letters and a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.

The volume accompanies the exhibition “Slavko Kopač. Il tesoro nascosto” (Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, Florence, 12 September — 13 November 2025). With an introduction by Bernard Blistène, honorary director of the Centre Pompidou and advocate of the acquisition of twelve of Kopač’s works into the museum’s collection, the book explores a multifaceted artist, deeply connected to Surrealism, Informal Art, and Art Brut. A key collaborator of Jean Dubuffet and the first curator of the Collection de l’Art Brut, Kopač played a fundamental part in its promotion and configuration. His magical, totemic universe captivated the Surrealists and led to a collaboration with André Breton. At the same time, critic Michel Tapié included him in Un art autre (1952), recognising his originality within the Informal Art movement. He used painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, collage, and art books to explore materiality, intertwining reality and fantasy. The volume features contributions by leading international scholars and an extensive iconographic repertoire, including previously unpublished works and archival documents.
Bernard Blistène has been honorary director of the Centre Pompidou since 2021 and headed the institution from 2013 to 2021. He has left a significant mark on the museum’s profile through numerous exhibitions and retrospectives (Fontana,Twombly, Warhol, Baselitz, etc.), while also establishing museums in Marseille. He was a professor at the École du Louvre for twenty-five years and organiser of international biennials, conceiving and directing the Nouveau Festival at the Centre Pompidou and spearheading major projects, such as “Mondes Nouveaux”. Roberta Trapani is a historian of contemporary art with a PhD awarded by Paris Nanterre and Palermo Universities in an international joint supervision programme. She is a cofounder of the Collective de réflexion autour de l’Art Brut (CrAB), the Kopač Commettee Association (Paris), and an associate researcher at ECLLA (University of Saint-Étienne), InTRU (University of Tours), and Osservatorio Outsider Art (Palermo). She has organised exhibitions in France, Belgium and Italy and published essays on twentieth- and twentyfirst-century artists and movements.

This exhibition and accompanying book show how contemporary artists are reinventing craft techniques, exploring identity and cultural history. Embroidery, a skill passed down through generations, is central to this exploration. Traditionally practised by women, it’s now embraced by both genders. The exhibition highlights the work of Madhvi and Manu Parekh, who draw inspiration from India’s rich spiritual and artistic traditions.Their works, ranging from paintings to sculptures, reflect the interplay between the real and the imaginary. The Chanakya School of Craft works with these artists to reinterpret their work through embroidery. This fusion of art and craft challenges traditional boundaries and creates a dialogue between past and present.
Madhvi Parekh (b. 1942) is a self-taught artist from India known for her folk-inspired paintings. Her work draws on childhood memories, mythology, and women’s craft traditions. She explores themes of human experience, the divine feminine, and the interplay between reality and the surreal. Parekh has exhibited internationally and received numerous awards, including a fellowship from the Indian Ministry of Culture and a Whirlpool Women’s Achievement Award. Manu Parekh (b. 1939), a leading Indian artist, draws inspiration from Paul Klee,Tagore, and the folk art of India. Rooted in the tangible and sensual, his work celebrates the beauty of embroidery and traditional craftsmanship. Recognised with prestigious awards, Parekh’s art is a fusion of modernism and Indian heritage. Founded in 2015 by Karishma Swali, the Chanakya Foundation empowers women through education and skill development, thus helping to preserve India’s rich cultural heritage, while the Chanakya School of Craft was established in 2016 and offers an eighteen-month immersive programme in over three hundred hand-embroidery techniques. The school supports more than 1,200 women and houses a cultural centre with live craft demonstrations. By reimagining craft practices, the Foundation and School promote equality, independence, and craft excellence, ensuring a sustainable future for this heritage.

J I V YA SOM A M A S H E Text by Hervé Perdriolle
This book is the first to be devoted entirely to the artwork of Jivya Soma Mashe (1934–2018). This legendary figure of the Warli tribe (Maharashtra, India) was one of those artists – or authors, as Dubuffet would have said – like Bill Traylor or Frédéric Bruly-Bouabré, who open our eyes to the richness and diversity of our cultures. Abandoned by his family at a young age, Jivya Soma Mashe took refuge in drawing and embraced the pictorial traditions of his community, later going on to develop a personal style that would earn him the admiration first of his loved ones, then that of regional, national, and international authorities. His work earned him a National Award, presented by Indira Gandhi in 1976. Jivya Soma Mashe’s paintings were exhibited for the first time at Mumbai’s historic Chemould Gallery in 1975. A number of them feature in the famous catalogue of the Centre Pompidou’s Magiciens de la terre exhibition in 1989, while others were shown in the Fondation Cartier’s thirtieth anniversary exhibition in 2014. Some of his large paintings will be on display in the inaugural exhibition at the Fondation Cartier’s new premises, opposite the Louvre Museum, from the end of October 2025. 195 mm x 265 mm, 264 pages 150 colour illustrations Hardback Bilingual edition: English and French € 45.00 | US$ 54.00 | £ 41.00 ISBN: 9791254600887

For a large part of his life, Jackie Kurltjunyintja Giles Tjapaltjarri (c. 1935–2010) led a nomadic existence, travelling across large tracts of and later spending time in small communities in Australia’s vast Western Desert region. Jackie Giles was renowned as a man of great erudition and a powerful healer, Maparnjarra in his native Ngaanyatjarra language. The powers of these traditional healers include the gift of seeing into the bodies and even the spirits of others. In the 1990s, Jackie Giles started painting with acrylic on canvas. Mr Giles, as he was often called, combined an intimate knowledge of his land with his own oneiric visions to build what became a significant personal oeuvre. These paintings celebrate the Tjukurpa (Dreaming), which pervades the land and is a cornerstone of its identity. Built around labyrinthine patterns and monumental shapes, these dynamic, rhythmical compositions allude to the esoteric, sacred subject matter of the Dreaming. The intense, striking works that make up this awe-inspiring oeuvre manage to link two dimensions: Ngaanyatjarra cosmology and the rapidly changing modern world.
Hetti Kemarre Perkins, an Arrernte and Kalkadoon writer, curator, and the daughter of the renowned Aboriginal rights activist Charles Perkins, worked as a senior curator at the Art Gallery of New South Wales from 1989 to 2011. She co-directed the Australian pavilion at the 1997 Venice Biennale, which featured the work of Emily Kam Kngwarray, Yvonne Koolmatrie, and Judy Watson. In 2010, she created Art + Soul, a multidisciplinary project focusing on Aboriginal art. She also co-curated the “Emily Kam Kngwarray” retrospective (2023–2024) and organised numerous significant exhibitions.

Since 2017, Georges Petitjean has been the curator of Collection Bérengère Primat and of contemporary Aboriginal art exhibitions at the Fondation Opale. An art historian with a PhD in Western Desert art from La Trobe University in Melbourne, his research focuses on the transition of Australian Aboriginal art from its origins to the international art world. Michael Stitfold managed Aboriginal art centres from 2002 to 2020. He served as administrator for Papunya Tula Artists from 2002 to 2004 and was appointed director of Kayili Artists in Patjarr, a remote Aboriginal community in the Gibson Desert in Western Australia, in 2005. During this time, he collaborated with Jackie Kurltjunyintja Giles Tjapaltjarri and accompanied him to Sydney in 2009. He later worked with Munupi Arts (2012–2020) and also directed Injalak Arts. This book is put together like a jewel and contains a carefully chosen selection of around one hundred West African combs from one of the world’s largest and finest private collections of sub-Saharan African art. Featuring a hitherto unseen assortment of pieces assembled over a period of more than sixty years, the book also includes an authoritative analysis by Alain-Michel Boyer, who approached this rarely addressed theme in what was his final work, begun almost ten years ago. As well as offering us valuable insights into the cultures that produced these miniature sculptures (Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria), he explores the way the form itself is approached. These creations transform what is in principle a plain accessory, and in the effort to attain pure beauty, they display an aesthetic awareness that raises the adornment of the body to the level of fine art.
Alain-Michel Boyer (1949–2025) was an anthropologist and art historian. He held an argrégation in literature and a BA from the Institut d’études politiques, as well as two doctorates (Sorbonne, Paris). Following his Fulbright Scholarship (United States), he taught at several American universities. After serving as a member of the Conseil national des universités in Paris, Alain-Michel Boyer then became professor emeritus of African Art. He lived for several years in Ivory Coast, particularly among the Baule and Yaure peoples. He also carried out several research missions in various regions of Africa. He carried out definitive research, particularly in the field of the arts of Ivory Coast. He authored around twenty books, including Comment regarder les arts d’Afrique (Hazan, 2017), Baule (5 Continents Editions, 2008), and Le corps africain (Hazan, 2006). He published the only books on the masks and figurines of two peoples hitherto neglected by art historians: Les Yohouré de Côte d’Ivoire. Faire danser les dieux (Ides et calendes, 2017) and Les figurines kulango. Les esprits mystérieux de la brousse de la collection Pierluigi Peroni (5 Continents Editions, 2017). He was an Officier de l’ordre national du Mérite de la République de Côte d’Ivoire. Najwa Borro is an independent researcher and exhibition organiser specialising in African art. She has worked with numerous galleries, auction houses and museums. As scientific assistant to Yves Le Fur, director of the Heritage and Collections Department at the musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, she worked on the design of the “Les forêts natales. Noire Idole is an immersive journey into a sophisticated world, both in terms of the choice of subject matter and form and as regards the way these are given artistic expression. The gear on the set lets the imagination and virtuosity of the craftsmen run riot. None of the objects are fake; they exude a natural perfection whose mirror image is simply reflected back to us. It is also a sensory journey into the shadows, alongside the reclining smoker. The choice of a black background transforms reality. The outlines of the furnishings become blurred, vision becomes clouded, the present is endlessly suspended. At the same time, it is a journey through memory, where drugs are merely a pretext for the narrative. Indochina appears within and between the lines. The author reveals his double loss: a vanished ritual and a dead dream, an unfulfilled French passion. Noire Idole is a collection of texts. A compendium brought together in the name of emotion, cultural exchange, and mutual fascination. The writing is leavened by contemporary pictures in the form of a collection of exceptional, previously unpublished photographs.
Ronan Juglard’s childhood in Africa taught him that art follows function. Juglard is a selftaught photographer and his pictures are instinctive, his eye on the lookout for the telling detail. As a naval doctor, imagination became the only thing able to break through the cold metal hulls that were always too close for comfort in a submarine. Back on the surface, he was seized by a passion for collecting. It proved an incurable condition, since accumulation is a compensation and not the end product. It remains a wonderful remedy for a pessimism that could sweep everything away. Emmanuel Pierrat is a lawyer and writer. He is a former member of both the French Bar Council and the National Council of the French Bar. He has been curator of the Paris Bar Museum, secretary general of the Yves Saint-Laurent Museum, in Paris, and a member of the Purchasing Committee of the Museums of Decorative Arts. After a period spent in a voluntary service overseas project in Calcutta, he specialised in intellectual property law and also became an agent acting on behalf of writers and artists. Emmanuel Pierrat is himself a bibliophile and collector of African art, as well as the author of La Collectionnite (Le Passage, 2011), Les Nouveaux Cabinets de curiosité (Les Beaux Jours, 2011) and Collections, collectionneurs (La Martinière, 2019). Alexandre Hougron is an antique dealer and expert in Asian pieces. He is a former student at the École Normale Supérieure in Rue d’Ulm, where he studied literature, graduating with an agrégation in classical literature and later earning a PhD in cinema. He inherited his passion for Asia from his father, the writer Jean Hougron, who had a particular interest in China. In 2006, Alexandre and his mother, Victoria, opened the Galerie Beauté Chinoise, named after his latest book, at the Marché Biron in the heart of the Saint-Ouen flea market. In 2015, he published La Céramique chinoise ancienne (Éditions de l’Amateur).

Publication date: 14 September 2026
At this book’s core is a private collection in Hong Kong that contains hundreds of Chinese fans made for European courts and the wider market between the seventeenth century and the end of the nineteenth century. The range of subjects depicted and materials used, as well as the exquisite craftsmanship and the fine detailing in the pieces, make this a unique collection. By showcasing the extraordinary skill and subtlety of the master craftsmen who adapted a centuries-old tradition to Western taste, this book aims to illustrate why “made in China” was synonymous with the highest quality and luxury in Western courts. The high-quality photographs are able to bring out every detail of these astonishing works.
Alex Shih-Chieh-Lin began to assemble his collection in Hong Kong, where he has lived since 2004, later enlarging it through acquisitions in Europe and the United States. His fascination with the decorative skills of Chinese craftsmen led him to undertake a journey of exploration of this particular form of applied art, of which he is now an acute connoisseur. Monique Crick is an art historian specializing in East Asian art. After being a researcher working on special assignments at the Musée national des Arts asiatiques-Guimet, she founded the Société Française d’ études de la Céramique Orientale. From 2003 to 2017 she directed the Fondation Baur, musée des Arts d’Extrême-Orient in Geneva.

Publication date: 13 October 2025 Co-published with the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art, Geneva
Following a first volume devoted to secular and sacred objects and sculptures from the twelfth to the eighteenth centuries, this second catalogue in the decorative arts collection of the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art focuses specifically on the art of living. Furniture, caskets, boxes, clocks, lamps, turned ivories, and gold and silver cups from the dawn of the Renaissance to the end of the Age of Enlightenment provide a panoply of strictly decorative European creativeness. Edited by Fabienne Fravalo, curator of the decorative arts collection at the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art, this catalogue is introduced by two essays, written respectively by Sophie Mouquin, lecturer at the University of Lille, and Caroline Heering, professor at the Catholic University of Leuven. It presents the major objects in the collection, studied and analysed by curators and scholars working in German, American, English, Belgian, French, and Swiss institutions.
Fabienne Fravalo has a doctorate in art history and has been curator of the decorative arts collection at the Fondation Gandur pour l’Art since 2015. She also edited the collection’s first catalogue in 2020. A specialist in the decorative arts and critical debate around 1900, she is the author of several articles and books, including: Art et Décoration, une revue entre deux siècles (1897-1914). De l’Art nouveau à un art décoratif moderne (2023). Caroline Heering is professor of art history at the Catholic University of Leuven and codirector of GEMCA (Group for Early Modern Cultural Analysis). Her research focuses on seventeenth-century art in the former Southern Netherlands and on the theoretical, historical, and formal aspects of decoration in architecture, painting, sculpture, the liturgical arts, and Baroque performing arts. Sophie Mouquin is a university lecturer (Bordeaux from 2004 to 2007, Lille since 2007) and was Director of Studies at the École du Louvre (2011–2016). She specialises in the decorative arts, ornamentation, and the history of taste in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and is the author of several books, including Le Style Louis XV (2003) and Les Arts décoratifs en Europe, de la Renaissance à l’Art Déco (2020), and numerous articles, as well as contributing chapters to collective works.
