INTRODUCTION
Porto is a city with an old soul and a rich history spanning nine centuries. In recent years it has gone through an exciting period of regeneration resulting in a captivating blend of the old and new. You will find blue-and-white azulejo-tiled churches and baroquestyle sights alongside contemporary world-class architecture and a thriving creative scene. The city has plenty of hidden gems waiting to be discovered, with its cobbled narrow lanes, colourful houses, the remains of the medieval city wall, wondrous bridges and one of the most picturesque riverbanks in the world. Located in the north of Portugal, it is the country’s second most populated city, famous for its UNESCO World Heritage historic centre, port wine cellars, excellent fish and seafood, and a lively nightlife scene with parties that go on until dawn. With a warm heart and open arms, Portuenses are notoriously proud of their city. This book will assist you in discovering all sides of Porto, from the 5 bars to drink like a local to the city’s 5 quirkiest sights. It is an intimate guide to all that Porto has to offer, from places off the beaten track to the most happening hotspots. Up to date and well researched by the authors, two Portuense sisters, the guide helps you discover the best views of the city, and even find 5 classic places to try a francesinha – Porto’s craziest sandwich invention.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK?
This book lists 500 things you need to know about Porto in 100 different categories. Most of these are places to visit, with practical information to help you find your way. Others are bits of information that help you get to know the city and its habitants. The aim of this guide is to inspire, not to cover the city from A to Z. The places listed in the guide are given an address, including the neighbourhood, and a number. The neighbourhood and number allow you to find the locations on the maps at the beginning of the book: first look for the map of the corresponding neighbourhood, then look for the right number. A word of caution however: these maps are not detailed enough to allow you to find specific locations in the city. You can obtain an excellent map from any tourist office or in most hotels, or you can locate the addresses on your smartphone. Please also bear in mind that cities change all the time. The chef who hits a high note one day may be uninspiring on the day you happen to visit. The hotel ecstatically reviewed in this book might suddenly go downhill under a new manager. Or the bar recommended as one of the ‘5 bars to drink like a local’ might be empty on the night you visit. This is obviously a highly personal selection. You might not always agree with it. If you want to leave a comment, recommend a bar or reveal your favourite secret place, please visit the website www.the500hiddensecrets.com or follow @500hiddensecrets on Instagram or Facebook and leave a comment.
THE AUTHORS
Joana and Sofia de Lacerda are sisters born and raised in Porto. They are passionate travellers and the founders of JO&SO (joandso.com), where they share their pick of places to stay in Portugal alongside compelling stories, true-to-life photographs and insider tips. Their mission is to help the endlessly curious traveller create new memories. Both sisters have lived abroad, which has given them a valuable perspective on their country, and made their love for Portugal flourish even further. Tourism has played a huge part in helping Porto get back on its feet after the economic recession of 2008. However, it’s particularly important for Joana and Sofia to preserve the identity and authenticity of the city as much as possible. They believe this is possible by supporting Porto’s traditional establishments, independent small businesses and makers. As they were finalising this book, the Covid-19 pandemic struck Porto. They hope that the immense love and dedication that has been put into this guide will, in some small way, help the city come back to the best version of itself soon. The book was revised in June 2021, just before printing, in order to provide an as accurate and up-to-date view of Porto as possible.
Joana and Sofia would like to thank their partners – Henrique and Mo – for their amazing patience and advice during the several months in the making of this book. Also, a big obrigada to their family and friends for all of their invaluable tips, in particular their Mum, Patrícia, Piki, Juan, Mike and Carol. Last but not least, JO&SO are super grateful to Dettie and Luster for the opportunity to share the 500 Hidden Secrets of Porto with the world.

Éclairs are a French treat the Portuguese adopted way back when. You’ll find the classic version with cream and chocolate at most cafes. Eat the best in town at Leitaria da Quinta do Paço, which has been making éclairs since 1920. If you can’t decide on the flavour, go for the supercute mini versions. Portugal’s amazing custard tarts were reportedly invented in Lisbon, and the most famous are known as Pasteís de Belém. In Porto, you will find Pasteís de Nata everywhere. Try them warm out of the oven at Manteigaria, with an added sprinkling of cinnamon. Heaven in a tart. This family-run hidden secret is perfect for discovering a wide array of authentic Portuguese sweet pastries, all homemade. To try something uniquely Portuguese go for the Jesuíta, a crispy triangular puff pastry with a sugary crust. Wash it down with a café (espresso) or a carioca (hot lemon water).

This 1930s neoclassical pergola is an iconic sight on the seafront of Foz do Douro. There are probably not many Portuenses who haven’t taken a photo here, with the sea in the background. António Enes Baganha, who was one of the most important artists of his generation, was in charge of the project. The ‘Swiss Chalet’ is an octagonal cafe in Rua do Passeio Alegre. Built in 1873, it was later bought by the Swiss Jácome Rasker. It’s the only kiosk of its type in Porto (there are six other kiosks) with the interior open to the public. Spot the intriguing ram sculpture that sits at the top. This lighthouse is Portugal’s oldest Renaissance-style building, and one of the oldest in Europe. Completed in 1538, nowadays it also encompasses a chapel and a Fiscal Guard building. Locals know it as ’Pilotos’ and in the summer it’s a joy to watch kids happily jumping off its sea wall for a refreshing dip.

Calçada Portuguesa is a traditional-style pavement made up of artfully arranged cobblestones, like an abstract or figurative mosaic. In 2005 the impressive calçada in Avenida dos Aliados was controversially replaced by granite, and parts were moved to Rua de Sampaio Bruno. You can now enjoy this beautiful 1910s pavement again.
