MARGARET SMITH

New Visuality 2023

1920, FIELDS OFF BAD BARGAIN LANE

“This is the earliest photo of Heworth Scouts A completely different world Everyone of them had knives on their person but there was not one single report of Knife Crime It’s a different world now ”

MARGARET SMITH, SCOUT LEADER

“Here’s Heworth Scouts a few years later, in 1926. Their leader is Margaret Smith She was quite a character, and instilled in the lads a lot of loyalty She was a lot before her time, I think. Absolutely tragic to think what those boys went through 13 years later ”

“Heworth Scouts enjoying life in 1936. What I would give to go back and talk to them I was born two years later in Selby. I can’t imagine what the times were like for these boys a few years after this, but I am forever grateful to the photographers for capturing this moment in time.”

“The photos in those days must have seemed like an absolute miracle. It’s something I think we have started to take for granted. In those days, you couldn’t just check the image you had just captured. You had to wait for days. I just hope those lovely lads had chance to see themselves I’d like to salute them, and especially Margaret Smith. A trailblazer of a woman ”

ABOVE: “In 1932 Heworth School pupils sat politely for their school photo The two boys at the front on the left 100% lived at Bad Bargain Lane because my mother used to talk to them. There’s Heworth church spire in the background ”

ABOVE: “This is Heworth School Choir. I found the photo in a book in Tang Hall Library I don’t know any of the names, but I bet a good few lived around here People moved around a lot less in those days ”

RIGHT: “Heworth Amateur Rugby League Club photo from 1952 Is it just me or were the men a lot more elegant in those days?!”

THE ANKERS ENJOY THE EARLY YEARS OF THE 1930s

“1930, number 31 on Heworth Hall Drive. These two ladies are called Reo and Maude Ankers. The house is still there but they wouldn’t recognise the place!

Here are the Ankers enjoying themselves in a Garden Party. It seems a very sociable part of York. I bet a good few of those guests were from Heworth Without. It’s a stone’s throw away. ”

“I have neighbours who live on Heworth Hall Drive. Ernie is in his 90s. He probably knew these girls when everyone involved was a lot younger. Strange to think like that.”

BRISTOW OF BAD BARGAIN LANE

“This is Mr Edwin Bristow. He used to deliver milk all over York and became very well known. His business became pretty massive and I think he passed it onto his sons He started out with a very small farm just in the fields of Bad Bargain Lane And then it became a milk and cow business and the rest is history ”

coronation style

“The Heworth Coronation party in June 1953 looks like great fun, fun for all the family That’s something we could maybe learn from This was in Walnut Villa which later became Walnut Tree Pub, and there was plenty to do and be entertained by A lot of those people were our neighbours in the 1960s.”

CLAYGATE CAPTAIN

“1st Heworth Cedars cub scouts I’m not sure if any of them went professional, but the one with the ball is Brian, he lived just off Claygate and moved to Copmanthorpe in the 90s ”
