When Jim Atkinson and Darlene Perkin started teaching photography courses for ACC Continuing Studies, one of their biggest limitations was film.

Students could only take a relatively few frames and then had to send it away to get developed before Jim or Darlene could offer feedback.

Soon, they branched out into darkroom procedures.

And now, 18 years later, they’re leading classes in Photoshop techniques and digital photography that move at the speed of modern technology.

“The immediate viewing of digital is the biggest change,” recalled Darlene during a recent class early this winter. “People can see what they’ve done, and we can help them immediately.”

These days, the two take students through all aspects of photography in a series of courses, from introductory workshops to full-on tutorials that delve into real detail.

But while skills in composition and manual controls of F-stop and exposure remain about the same, a lot else has changed.

Rather than shutting themselves into a darkroom and changing chemicals, Jim and Darlene turned down the lights at a recent class so that students could better see their laptop projection of Photoshop tools and brushes.

As students worked away at their own digital compositions, Jim and Darlene said they were always learning new things themselves.

“I’m always amazed by what people produce, the ideas they have,” Darlene says. “We show them the concept and they turn it into something new.”

“It’s a two-way street, learning,” Jim adds. “Students come up with something I’ve never done … there’s just so many buttons in Photoshop.”

So in a world where there’s too much Photoshop for any one person to master it all, and where students can find and download tutorials or how-to videos online, why is there still so much interest in actual classes?

“I don’t know what I don’t know,” said student Aaron Harris, a mechanic who got a camera last Christmas and wanted to improve his photo skills. “The class is good. It’s the right combination of theory and hands-on.”

Seated next to him, classmate Sheila Elder said she drove in every week from her farm near Wawanesa to learn.

“I wished I’d had a better camera when my daughter graduated (three years ago),” she said. “I decided I wanted one before my son graduated (last June).”

Then, after really digging into photography through a recent trip to Europe, she’s now working at the postprocessing portions, with a Photoshop class.

“I’m playing with it more,” she says, adding that having an actual class helped. “It’s a small size, you can talk to anybody. Peoples’ photos all get laid out, you get ideas.”

Interacting with other students has proven as important as the lessons from instructors, she says.

I don’t think of myself as very creative,” she says, despite evidence to the

contrary all over her screen and desk, “but it’s helped to push myself out of automatic mode. Now I want to learn about dressing up the photos.”

Many students are like that, say Jim and Darlene: people who can benefit from group learning, from being able to ask questions of qualified instructors, and from being able to learn at a pace that’s adjusted for them.

“A lot of students, instead of reading books, they like someone showing them what to do,” Jim says. “There are a lot of tutorials on the Internet, but they often leave something out, that they assume you know.”

As more and more people carry a camera around with them everywhere they go, integrated into their phone, there’s been an explosion of easy photography, but Jim and Darlene say there’s still an opportunity to teach the basics.

“There are so many things they didn’t know they could do,” says Jim.

“It’s awesome,” says Photoshop 1 student Sonja Manning, pictured below. A Grade 9 student by day, Sonja drives in with her mom’s friend every week from Baldur to take the ACC evening class. “It’s very interactive — better than some of the classes at school.”

“Or that they don’t know,” adds Darlene. After 18 years teaching together, they have a tendency to finish each other’s sentences.

“What surprises me,” says Jim, “is that people don’t know what they can do with their camera.”

Today’s devices, he says, are loaded with features, but fewer and fewer people bother to fiddle with the settings. He lists built-in filters, white balancing, low-light shooting and ISO adjustments as some of the basics that they can teach that can make a huge difference in student photography.

“Even using a tripod,” he says. “Once you show them what they can do with a tripod, compared to without.”

One of their favourite tricks, they agree, is HDR photography, which stands for high dynamic range.

“Most people don’t know about it, but a lot of people have it on their phone,” Darlene says. “It allows you to capture details in highlights and in shadows, where before you had to choose.

“You can capture what your eyes can see.”

Like many techniques, HDR photos can be taken in-camera, or combined later in Photoshop, they say.

“There’s often two or three ways to do the same thing,” Jim notes.

“And they’re both right,” finishes Darlene.

In fact, she says, learning new ways to do things is one of the reasons they have repeat students, who come to take the same class more than once.

“In photography,” she says, “even if you repeat courses, you learn something new.”

They’re both proud of many of the students they’ve had who have gone on to careers — either with studios or in news photography.

“There are a lot of talented people out there,” Darlene says.

Her best story? They both laugh: “One student, she was so excited about something she learned in class, she drove through a red light on the way home!”

Luckily, there wasn’t a red-light camera.

QUICKTIP Photography instructor Jim Atkinson offered some guidance to Photoshop 1 students on how to pick a great colour for borders or mats around pictures.

While classic white or black will set off most photos starkly, Jim told students to use the eyedropper tool and to select a colour from inside the photo itself.

“Why wouldn’t you pick a colour that’s in the photograph,” he asked rhetorically.

“You know it’s going to match.”

It pays to enrich your word power, and there’s no better way than by learning another language.

This year, one of the most popular languages to learn through ACC’s Continuing Studies is Spanish.

“It is a pretty language,” says Spanish instructor Sandra Fernández-Mesa. “It is more difficult than English, but more beautiful.”

She says that the two dozen people in her fall class have many different reasons for learning a new language, but one of the biggest is just how popular Spanish is.

“On this continent, many people speak Spanish,” she says, reeling off a list of southern sun destinations. “Plus Canadians tend to travel to Spanishspeaking countries.”

But there’s no doubting that the recent influx of Spanish-speaking immigrants to Brandon and to Westman also has something to do with it.

“Everywhere you go (in Brandon), you hear Spanish now,” Sandra says. She recalled a recent trip to Wal-Mart in which all she heard for about 15 minutes were Spanish-speaking voices.

So for many people, she says, learning Spanish can help them in their jobs, or can help them get a new job.

It certainly helps Maryanne Rocan.

She says taking ACC’s introductory Spanish course last fall continues to pay off for her in her work at the hospital.

“There are so many Latinos, and many of them don’t speak English,” she says.

“So they bring in their children or someone else to translate. But there are a lot of medical scenarios where you don’t want to go through a translator.”

She says even simple phrases can make a huge difference in communication, both to put people at ease and to gather valuable medical information.

“I can ask them, ‘¿Dónde duele?’ …

‘Where does it hurt?” she says. Before learning Spanish she was forced to mime out the questions, pointing around her body and asking “Ow? Ow?”

MEET

SANDRA

We’re lucky to have Sandra Fernández-Mesa teaching Spanish classes at ACC Continuing Studies It’s actually a bit of a return visit for Sandra, a Cuban native. Twenty years ago, she arrived in Brandon for a visit through Canada World Youth.

That was temporary. Now, she’s back as a permanent resident, having returned to Brandon in 2014.

While she waits on getting her Cuban credentials recognized here (she has a degree in education), Sandra is working as an EA at Neelin High School and is teaching Spanish on Wednesday evenings through ACC Continuing Studies.

It’s a bit of a flip for her: She trained as an English teacher.

“I’m pretty much doing the opposite now,” she laughs, “but it’s not difficult. I come from a family of teachers and my mother taught Spanish — and it’s my mother tongue!”

“It can add a lot to the pertinent clinical history,” she says. “It’s pigeon-y phrases but they give you a lot of info.”

Often, she says, making a personal connection is as important.

“It makes them feel more like a person, less like a patient,” Maryanne says.

“Even a simple ‘Hi, how are you?

Where do you live?’ relaxes you and gives them reassurance. They love it; it’s nice to see them smile.”

She also says it helps her – making sure that she keeps practicing her Spanish and doesn’t let it slip away.

“It makes me want to practice because I see how much they appreciate it,” she says. “And they make me comfortable enough to use the Spanish that I have.”

Sandra says that many of her students work in places where they interact with Spanish-speaking customers or clients.

Or, looking forward to travelling, they might want to be able to buy groceries or interact in Spanish.

“I want to introduce to my class the things that they wanted to learn,” she says. “It’s very basic, but we’ve been able to cover a lot.”

Sandra, who has an education degree from her native Cuba, says she brings a lot of Hispanic culture into the classroom as well.

“I like to play and learn,” she says. “If you just give a lecture for three hours, people fall asleep.”

In a couple of recent classes, for example, she was teaching students how to salsa.

“It’s a very popular dance that people want to learn,” she points out, “but I’m also introducing the numbers.”

Mixing things up throughout the class, she’s also had students working through an ‘Amazing Race’ of Spanishspeaking locales, learning regionspecific slang from different areas, and translating popular sayings like “I’m all ears” into colloquial Spanish.

“I like a lot of videos and songs to make it interactive,” she says. “But nothing replaces a teacher in front of a student.”

She says she’s looking forward to more teaching over the winter.

“I’m actually having a very good time.

Hopefully we will have a big group here next semester!”

IELTS tests are available on up to 48 dates a year. Tests are normally taken on Saturdays, with some sessions on Thursdays. If you are interested in Thursday testing, please email ielts@assiniboine.net.

Improve your score on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Become familiar with the structure of the test, learn test-taking strategies specific to the IELTS and practice with an instructor. The course will review all four components: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Special emphasis will be given to the grammar structures, vocabulary items and sentence patterns important to the IELTS. Students will also get the opportunity to have an instructor give individualized feedback on student performance for the tested skills. Textbook required.

The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are all taken on the same day. The Speaking test can take place up to seven days before or after the other papers; this is determined by the Centre.

The following test dates are available at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon or Winnipeg.

To register for an IELTS test, it is preferred that you complete your online application at least 5 weeks before the test date. Refunds and transfers will only be permitted prior to 5 weeks before the test date. Online registration can be completed at http://ielts.britishcouncil.org/assiniboine.

Probably the only corporate team-building in the province where you end up with something you can hang on your wall.

“It’s a great confidence-builder,” says Marlies Sotys, who runs Modern Mosaics out of Minnedosa. “You can say, ‘I made this. And it looks good.’”

Modern Mosaics sounds like a pretty great home-based business all by itself.

Soltys can install premium kitchen backsplash or tub surround to anyone’s specifications. Or, she can bust out her artistic chops for custom mosaic designs that incorporate whatever patterns or images someone desires.

Then, the twist: She’ll come and lead you through doing it all yourself, along with your co-workers. It’s a tremendous teambuilding experience, she says.

“It’s interesting to me — people get so into it and they can hardly talk,” she says.

“You can ask them questions and they’ll give you answers, but otherwise they’re quietly absorbed. That’s awesome; it gives them time to themselves, lets them use a different, more creative part of the brain.

And they get to share that experience with others, with their co-workers.”

Soltys has an Applied Counselling certificate from ACC and she says that the benefits for employees — and their bosses — are clear.

“The artistic component helps with self-reflection,” she says, something that people in today’s busy society don’t always have a lot of.

She knows busy. Soltys also works full time as an educational assistant. So it might seem like she doesn’t have a lot of time for a second career at home.

But in fact, the opposite is true. She can’t wait to expand, and recently won three awards from a Dragons-Den style proposal in Minnedosa where she

presented her idea of a combination art studio and creative space.

Meanwhile, along with installs and custom gift work, Soltys is already looking for post-Christmas teambuilding opportunities.

She’s partnered with ACC’s Centre of Continuing Studies to offer either mosaic or painting-based teambuilding across Westman.

In one recent team-building exercise, she ran an art afternoon, featuring oversize puzzle pieces that were individually painted by different coworkers.

Although each piece was painted in a completely different style, the message they send when interlocked was unmistakeable.

“It doesn’t matter what your job title is, you’re important,” Soltys says.

People in the art afternoon painting project worked on their own, but came together as a team in the end, and the overall message of the teambuilding is how different people, each making unique contributions, can help assemble something bigger and more varied than they could have alone.

“Especially when you’re working with pieces of a puzzle, you can’t have any of the pieces missing,” Soltys says.

“Each piece is so different, yet when you put them together, they look fantastic as well.”

APPLIED COUNSELLING SKILLS (CERTIFICATE) WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT This program enables students to develop proficiency in basic counselling skills as well as provide the knowledge to aid others in their search for personal growth and healthy relationships. Students will develop basic counselling skills in areas that include general counselling, cross-cultural communication, and family & youth issues. This program has a September intake every year. You must apply by early August.

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED • Special selection program requirements: applicants must provide the Centre of Continuing Studies with a package containing a resumè, two personal references, a Criminal Record Check, a Child Abuse Registry Check and a hand written application essay. Please check our website for more information.

• You should possess a minimum of Grade 12 or GED equivalency.

• Appropriate reading and writing skills are necessary as much of the course work involves written assignments. Some courses require students to write and research assignments, term papers and projects.

• It is recommended that applicants have prior experience (minimum of 75 hours) in a counselling-related field.

MASTER GARDENER (DOCUMENT OF ACHIEVEMENT) WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT The Master Gardener program is open to anyone with an interest in gardening. It is an opportunity to learn, share gardening experience and develop friendships through community volunteerism. Master Gardeners take pride in achieving their certification and continue to share their knowledge with others in their community.

HOW IT WORKS Students begin by paying an application fee of $99. The application fee includes a program text (Sustainable Gardening), all administrative and final examination fees. Students must then register and complete all seven courses that are listed in the table below. An internship of 40 hours of volunteer time must be completed before students are permitted to write the final exam. Students may begin accumulating hours any time after they pay their application fee. These hours can be acquired in many ways, including but not limited to, volunteering in a community garden, delivering presentations and writing articles. Mail your completed log sheet to the Centre of Continuing Studies; these hours must be approved in order to write your exam. After you complete all seven courses and your internship you may write the Master Gardener Theory Exam. This is a take-home, open book exam based on material from the program text and core courses.

PROGRAM CONTENT Assiniboine Community College will award a Document of Achievement to students completing the program. Students must complete all courses, including an internship of 40 hours and a final exam.

PALLIATIVE CARE (CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT ONLINE) WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT Hospice palliative care is both challenging and rewarding for the care provider who plays a critically important role in facilitating quality care for those living with a terminal illness – the patient, and his or her family and loved ones. A holistic approach to the study of care at the end of life enables graduates to consider the physical, psychological, practical, social, cultural and spiritual aspects of the dying and death experience and support therapeutic interventions.

NURSING FOOT CARE (DOCUMENT OF ACHIEVEMENT) WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT This program introduces the principles and practices of foot care as defined and established by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPNM), Nursing Foot Care Standards. Participants will be introduced to anatomy, structure and function of the lower extremities.

Nursing assessment of the lower extremities, common foot afflictions, tools and the interventions necessary for safe and effective basic nursing foot care will be explored. Assessment and use of foot care instruments and products, gait differentiations, footwear, consultation and referral of clients, and evaluating the effectiveness of foot care, footwear and client education are included.

Students will have the opportunity for supervised application of foot care theory and skills in both the classroom and the clinical area.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (DOCUMENT OF ACHIEVEMENT & CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT) WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT The Vista Signing Naturally program prepares students to converse in American Sign Language (ASL), a visual-spatial language used extensively throughout English-speaking North America by members of the deaf community. This is a standardized curriculum that teaches signing and grammar, and provides information on the deaf culture. The program consists of two levels, each level consisting of three 40 hour courses. Each level is progressively more demanding and will require increasing degrees of skill.

Located on Rosser Avenue next to the bus mall in downtown Brandon, ACC’s Adult Collegiate features several options for continuing to build your skills.

We offer mature student high school classes, for adult learners who want to earn a high school credential, or who need to upgrade specific classes before going on to post-secondary education.

Conveniently, those classes can be combined with some introductory ACC courses, so students can get advanced placement in programs like ACC’s Comprehensive Health Care Aide or Education Assistant. The new Food Security program at the Adult Collegiate includes courses that count for credit in the Horticultural Production program.

5–8, the programs include various English for Specific Purposes classes so that people can master terms and jargon that they need in the workplace. And, they’re free for people with permanent resident status.

Sign up through My ACC! Go to myacc.assiniboine.net or click on “My ACC” at the top right of any assiniboine.net webpage. Choose “My ACC for Continuing Studies (yellow). You may have to log out to see this option, then choose “View and Register for Continuing Studies Courses”.

To find a course you’re interested in, either: • “Search by Keyword” to look for courses by title • “Search by Course Number” to zero in on specific courses • “List All” to see everything available

Select your courses from the list and click “Submit”. We offer courses around Manitoba and in different time slots, so please be sure you’re choosing the one you want.

Registration includes your name and contact information, plus demographics like age, gender and ethnicity. Fields that are required are marked with a red asterisk. When it’s all filled in, click “Submit”

On the confirmation screen, please check to ensure the courses are correct, then choose “Register now (check out)” from the drop-down menu as well as your method of payment (MasterCard or Visa). Once payment has been processed, you must click “OK” to receive your registration information.
