Seeing the Full Picture | How the AERC Guided Our Next Step

By Kimberley Anthony, ACCESS Parent Every individual has a unique purpose, and ACCESS provides the resources needed to help bring that purpose to life. For our family, this became especially clear through our journey with Bradley.

Over the years, we explored many educational options for him—public school with an IEP, private school, and homeschooling within a very supportive community. Each setting had its strengths and offered something positive. Yet, despite our best efforts, we eventually reached a point where it was clear that Bradley needed more comprehensive support than those environments could provide. That realization led us to the ACCESS Evaluation and Resource Center (AERC) for a full evaluation.

The comprehensive testing and feedback we received through the AERC were unlike anything we had experienced before. The results clearly identified the areas where Bradley needed focused instruction and therapeutic intervention in order to truly thrive.

Those insights confirmed what our hearts already knew—he needed a different kind of school environment. And that’s what led us directly to the ACCESS Academy. From the very beginning of that process, we felt supported.

Our evaluator, Chancey, was knowledgeable and easy to talk to, which immediately put us at ease. After reviewing the evaluation results with her, we were confident that ACCESS could not only meet Bradley’s needs but help him grow in ways we had long hoped for.

Although we are only a few weeks into this new chapter, we have already seen the benefits of ACCESS’s coordinated approach. Bradley’s academics are designed around his learning style, and his therapists are on-site and able to collaborate directly with his teachers. It is clear that the team works together with the shared goal of helping each child succeed.

Even though we are still at the beginning of our journey with ACCESS, we already feel encouraged by the progress Bradley is making and the support we have received as a family.

Thanks to results revealed through the AERC, we are confident that ACCESS is the right place for him to continue to grow and reach his full potential.

“I was drawn to work at ACCESS because of the unique population the organization serves. During graduate school, I completed specialized training in providing mental health services for clients with disabilities. This training taught me to utilize interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to client care – values that are highly prioritized at ACCESS.

I believe that working alongside other therapists from different disciplines is essential to helping children succeed and reach their fullest potential. As a mental health therapist, I strive to provide child-centered, strengths-based, and affirming therapy interventions that help each child build on their strengths to navigate challenges.

I am especially passionate about providing Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for children ages two through six. PCIT is a powerful, evidence-based model that empowers caregivers with practical tools that are used to strengthen their attachment with their child while supporting both emotional and behavioral growth. It is a privilege to work alongside families in their mental health journey, and I am committed to providing a safe, affirming, and inclusive space for each child I serve.”

Finding His Voice | Vuki’s Journey with ACCESS “Vuki’s journey began with speech and occupational therapy at ACCESS. Those early days were challenging, but the support from ACCESS helped us better guide him at home. He went from being completely mute to being a talkative, curious little boy.

Later, when communication and behavior at home became difficult, ACCESS once again stepped in to help with mental health services. Through their family therapy program, we received guidance, resources, and exercises to use at home. It took time and effort, but we gradually saw major improvements. Even on tough days, the therapists and teachers were always there with support and advice. Vuki began enjoying the sessions, and we watched his confidence grow. Today, Vuki is thriving, and our family is stronger and more connected. We still use the tools and strategies we learned from ACCESS Mental Health Professionals everyday.”

Helping Pyper Shine “Pyper was diagnosed with a genetic disorder in 2021 that has delayed her development, but the therapists at ACCESS have helped her grow and thrive. Through occupational therapy, she has learned to actively play with others, especially her brother, as well as do small independent things like take off her shoes, pick out her clothes, and communicate much more effectively. Her bubbly personality is infectious and has been nurtured by all her therapists, nurses, and teachers. As a single mom, the support I have received from ACCESS has been priceless, and I will forever be grateful for our ACCESS family!”

Early Foundations for Lifelong Learning | ACCESS Early Childhood Within the first month, we started seeing changes. She was responding more, joining in, and even started asking questions! If you’ve waited and waited for your child to say “why?” or “what’s that?” you know what a big deal that is.

By pre-k 4, she was reading and writing ahead of age and helping other kids with their books. Today, in first grade, she’s reading at a third-grade level. But more than anything, she’s confident, she leads, and she believes in herself.

Where Curriculum & Care Intertwine | Christian & Juliet’s Woven Path

By Janet and Jon Teague, ACCESS Parents We first noticed something was off when Christian was around two years old. We were at a play date during COVID, and all the other kids were talking circles around her. It hit us hard. We were scared that she was falling behind and that we didn’t know how to help.

Not long after, she was officially diagnosed with a severe speech delay, which only confirmed our fears. A friend of ours told us to look into the ACCESS Early Childhood program, so we did. That decision changed everything.

What stood out right away was that ACCESS wasn’t just a place for therapy, it was school. Real school. The kind with circle time, literacy lessons, music, and play centers — but every bit of it intentionally designed to build language and confidence.

Christian still had speech therapy, but her therapists weren’t off in a separate corner. They were part of her education team, working hand-in-hand with her teachers so she was receiving support all day long, not just in isolated sessions.

When a spot became available for our younger daughter Juliet to join Christian at ACCESS Early Childhood, we jumped at the opportunity.

Juliet started much younger than Christian did, so she was exposed to that same language-rich classroom environment from the very beginning. She didn’t need the same therapy and intervention Christian did, but her time at ACCESS made a huge impact on her social skills, confidence, and how she connects with others. To this day, she still talks about her friends and teachers from ACCESS like they’re family.

We tell people all the time that it’s the best decision you can make for your child. The full immersion of support, the commitment of the staff, the way every single person there loves your child like their own is irreplaceable.

Chloe’s Story | Thriving at ACCESS Academy

By Domonique & Corey Freeman, ACCESS Parents Chloe’s journey with ACCESS began at just 18 months old when she started therapy soon after receiving her autism diagnosis. By age three and a half, she was enrolled full-time in the ACCESS Early Childhood program, and her progress was undeniable.

One of Domonique’s earliest hopes was simple–for Chloe to call her “Mommy.” The day Chloe looked up at her after school pickup and said, “Hi Mommy,” was a moment of pure joy and a sign of the incredible growth to come. From that point on, Chloe continued to flourish, finding her voice, building friendships, and learning to navigate the world around her.

When it came time for school, the Freemans chose ACCESS Academy to begin Chloe’s educational journey. Her first year was a success, with steady progress that gave her parents the confidence to try their hometown public school in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The hope was that eliminating the long commute might make life easier, but it quickly became clear that the traditional classroom was not meeting Chloe’s unique learning needs.

She began to decline, and her parents worried she might fall through the cracks. That realization brought them back to ACCESS Academy, where Chloe was welcomed with open arms. Though the family still makes the daily 50-minute drive from Pine Bluff, they say the difference is worth every mile. ACCESS Academy’s unique approach, blending specialized teaching methods, therapeutic support, and a nurturing team environment, has given Chloe the tools to thrive both academically and in daily life.

Now nine years old, Chloe is bright, talkative, and independent. She has mastered reading and writing skills, math basics, and essential life skills such as brushing her teeth, dressing herself, tying her shoes, cleaning her room, and even riding her bike. Most importantly, she is happy, confident, and full of potential.

“Because of ACCESS, Chloe has grown in so many ways,” Domonique shared. “I love how teachers and therapists collaborate to meet her specific needs. Their teamwork has given me confidence in her future. We are so thankful for the continuous support and dedication of the ACCESS team, our experience has been unmatched.”

Threads of Opportunity | Vocational Services Preparing Students for Lifelong Success

By Erin Walker, ACCESS Academy Upper 4 Lead Teacher & VIP Program Coordinator At ACCESS Academy, vocational training starts early. For Upper School students (ages 13 and up), learning goes beyond academics.

It’s about building independence and lifelong success.

“The more exposure students have to functional living and job skills, the more confident they become,” says Erin Walker, Upper School Teacher and Vocation Innovation Project (VIP) Coordinator. “These early experiences lay the groundwork for success in the workforce and community.”

Across campus, students manage the School Store, stock ACCESS Spirit Store apparel, work in work in the ACCESS horticulture program and assist with Buildings & Grounds, developing transferable skills for future employment.

The Career and Technical Education curriculum combines practical lessons in cooking, nutrition, and money management with job applications, interviewing, communication, and customer service, all reinforced through hands-on experience.

Collaboration is key. Occupational Therapist Maeve Shaddock and Speech Therapist Emily Smith support therapy goals while students operate the School Store, building money management and social skills. Through the Vocational Innovation Project (VIP), a partnership with Arkansas Rehabilitation Services, students gain off-campus experience with local businesses like Taziki’s, The Burgundy Hotel, Professor Bowl, and Table 28.

“Our students have so much to offer,” Erin says. “Vocational training lets them discover that potential—learning to earn, manage money, and contribute with purpose and pride.”

Mariam’s Story | Growing in Confidence, Purpose, & Community

By Tariq and Tiba Fahmi, ACCESS Parents Two years before Mariam graduated high school, her parents, Tariq and Tiba, began searching for the right next step — one that would nurture her gifts and prepare her for adulthood. After exploring several programs, they found ACCESS Life and knew it was the perfect fit.

“ACCESS Life met everything Mariam needed to be engaged in the community,” they shared. “It checked all the boxes for helping her grow in independence.”

Since joining, Mariam’s confidence and communication have blossomed. “She greets everyone each morning with a big smile,” said instructor Greg Hoogkamp. “She’s so much more vocal and sure of herself now.”

Her instructors have watched her become more independent, socially engaged, and self-assured.

“She loves ACCESS Life and wants to work in a grocery store one day,” said instructor Brittany Fuhrmann.

Outside the classroom, Mariam shines in Special Olympics sports, embracing competition with pride.

“The program has helped Mariam build confidence and independence,” her parents shared. “She’s becoming a capable, confident member of her community.” With every smile and laugh, Mariam shows just how far she’s come.

Sarah’s Story | Weaving My Own Path

By Sarah Tuberville, Project SEARCH Graduate I was introduced to the Project SEARCH program by a friend who went to high school with me. After a few years of job

searching, I decided to give this program a try, which turned out to be the best decision I have ever made.

I worked with some wonderful people who gave me boundless amounts of patience and encouraged me to challenge myself with tasks that were way out of my comfort zone, such as making small talk with other people, taking leadership roles in group activities, and getting my driver’s permit! Facing these challenges allowed me to find my confidence. My social skills have improved tremendously, and I’m on my way to completing another rite of passage toward independence for myself.

Throughout the program year, I’ve learned valuable lessons in both the classroom and in all three of my internships. In the classroom, I’ve learned about the importance of communication, teamwork, kindness, and self-reliance through fun, educational games with my fellow interns. We also completed a series of certification courses to gain more qualifications in Workforce Professional Customer Services, ServSafe, OSHA, and Driver’s Education.

I began my rotations in the Human Resources Department at Quality Services where I learned skills such as data entry, customer service, social etiquette, and emotional intelligence. My second rotation at an OB/GYN clinic involved answering phones, greeting patients, and screening their temperatures before they came inside the office during the COVID-19 pandemic. During my third rotation, I became certified to test for COVID-19 for the employees in the Quality Service Department, which landed me my first job in the Nutritional Services Department where I currently work now!

My advice to future interns is simple: never stop believing in yourself. You are the only one who can define your limits. I was told I’d never learn to read or live independently—but I refused to let those words shape my future. If you stay focused on your dreams and keep pushing forward, you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.

Interwoven Support | CES Medicaid Waiver Services Nolan’s Story | Learning to Live & Lead with Confidence

By Holley Mott, ACCESS Parent Our family first learned about Waiver services at ACCESS Life as Nolan (NJ) prepared to graduate from the Arkansas School for the Deaf and Blind—a major turning point for him and for us. We knew NJ needed a place to build independence, practice life skills, and form friendships beyond school. When we toured ACCESS, NJ immediately knew it was where he wanted to be. His confidence gave us peace of mind, knowing this was the right environment for him to thrive.

Through the Waiver program, NJ receives physical, occupational, and speech therapy all in one place, seamlessly integrated into his day. This consistency has been a tremendous benefit, helping him make progress while easing our family’s routine.

ACCESS has also been a gift socially and educationally. NJ has made lasting friendships and discovered new interests, especially in nutrition and health. He now reads food labels, encourages healthier choices, and proudly holds himself accountable. NJ also has a growing passion for giving back. Volunteering at the Arkansas Food Bank has given him purpose, pride, and a sense of belonging. At home, we see the same spirit of responsibility and generosity.

ACCESS and its Waiver services have truly been life-changing for NJ and for our family.

They’ve given him a safe, supportive place to keep learning, growing, and exploring his place in the world with confidence.

Weaving Confidence and Resilience

By Payne Hill, ACCESS Alumni When I was three years old, I was diagnosed with multiple developmental delays caused by recurrent double ear infections, which placed me six months behind my peers. Diagnosed with Chronic Otitis Media (COM), these infections impaired my language development and balance, causing me to lag behind other children my age.

My parents enrolled me at ACCESS Early Childhood where I participated in 60-minute weekly sessions of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy to enhance my balance and support my language development.

My memories of ACCESS remain vivid and cherished.

I remember riding a bike through the hallways, playing on the playground, and exploring the shiny new desktop computers. Thanks to the staff’s ability to foster a fun and engaging atmosphere, ACCESS was an ideal place for a young child.

In addition to my early developmental challenges, I was later diagnosed with dyslexia, a learning disability that has presented challenges throughout my academic and adult life. The team at ACCESS helped me find a local tutor trained in the Orton-Gillingham (OG) method

so I could continue my progress after I graduated from the Early Childhood program. From elementary through high school, I worked with my tutor who played a pivotal role in supplementing my education and nurturing my overall learning.

ACCESS equipped me with the confidence I needed to approach school and embrace my learning differences.

My parents often reminded me that I wasn’t any less intelligent for finishing a test last, it simply meant I was neurodivergent. The skills I gained at ACCESS, combined with my family’s encouragement, fueled my love for learning and resilience in tackling challenging assignments.

Coming to terms with being neurodivergent has been a significant journey. I’ve learned to recognize my weaknesses and develop strategies to overcome them.

I am immensely grateful to my parents and ACCESS for their early support. Though my time at ACCESS lasted only a year or two, it was instrumental in shaping who I am today. I graduated from Catholic High School in 2018 and from Sewanee: The University of the South in 2022, where I played on the NCAA Division III golf team. Today, I live in Washington, D.C., and work at FTI Consulting.

A Legacy of Possibility | Why ACCESS Will Always Be Part of Our Family Story

By Olivia Ramsey, ACCESS Board of Director & Former Parent ACCESS began in 1994 when I was seven years old. Growing up, I often heard my parents share how ACCESS changed the lives of many friends whose children struggled in traditional schools.

My parents made their first gift to ACCESS in 2003 and have continued giving each year, confident in the mission and the life-changing work being done. Their connection deepened when my son began outpatient therapy in 2018.

From the start, I was amazed by the therapists’ skills and care. We saw quick improvements in our son’s speech and feeding, and the kindness of everyone at ACCESS made a difficult journey feel manageable. In 2019, after my son began therapy, I was invited to join the ACCESS Board of Directors—an opportunity I gladly accepted.

Our son “graduated” from therapy in 2020, but my involvement continued. To better understand the student experience, I began volunteering in an early childhood classroom in 2019 and again in 2024. Nothing compares to being in an ACCESS classroom: joyful children, patient teachers, and seamless collaboration with therapists. I especially enjoy witnessing music time with Mrs. Julie, therapy gym sessions, and planting seeds in the garden with Ms. Lo.

ACCESS’s commitment to each child and family never ceases to inspire me. Every child is known, supported, and celebrated. That’s why my family will always be proud to champion ACCESS, a true gift to our community.
