THE SUGAR FACTORY AT SEMINOLE HARD ROCK Leave Your Calorie Counter at Home! Story and photos by Melissa & Al Martino

A

s the name might imply, the Sugar Factory churns out sweets unlike you have ever experienced before. Beautiful, clever, gigantic and tasty “goblets”, cocktails, milkshakes, and ice cream concoctions parade out from the kitchen, each one more spectacular than the last. Goblets are definitely shareable and are fun to watch being created at your table when the smoking and bubbling dry ice kicks in. The restaurant is eclectic and inviting, with a touch of elegance (crystal chandeliers) and whimsey (Vintage photos adorning the walls each feature one of the Sugar Factory’s treats in them.) White marble table tops with red chairs and banquettes make for a comfortable dining experience. It isn’t all about sweets and cocktails, however, the menu has a nice selection of lunch and dinner options, and brunch on the weekends. Indeed, the menu has page after page of different food and drink. We started our lunch off with 64 oz. goblets (sans alcohol), the “Lolllipop Passion” (melon, coconut, pineapple and lollipops) and the “Fuzzy Peach Penguin Mango” (peach, mango, and gummy fruit slices and penguins.) We ordered the Bluecheese Bacon Burger, and the Alfredo Pasta with Chicken. Both were delicious. For dessert (so many to choose from!) we had “Insane Milkshakes” which are aptly named. Sugar Factory’s Chef William Myers prepared some utterly amazing concoctions for us. We’re still afraid to get on the scale. The Sugar Factory is located in the Seminole Hard Rock, 5223 Orient Rd, Tampa. Visit sugarfactory.com/

DIANE GRANITO HEART OF GOLD AWARD. Gulf Coast JFCS and the Heart Gallery will honor Dr. Marcie Biddleman with the “Diane Granito Heart of Gold Award” at their annual Heartstrings Luncheon at Feather Sound Country Club. Diane Granito established the first Heart Gallery in 2001 to raise awareness about adoption and to find homes for older children and sibling groups in protective custody. She developed the idea from photographer (and adoptive mother) Cathy Maier, to have talented photographers create inspiring portraits of children awaiting adoption. The community’s energy and generosity created an impetus which resulted in Heart Galleries opening nationwide. The “Diane Granito Heart of Gold Award” recognizes an outstanding community leader who strengthens the lives of children and families. The Gulf Coast JFCS Heart Gallery connects children to forever families and Dr. Biddleman is a great advocate. Heartstrings Luncheon will also provide a chance for attendees to learn about the latest developments with the Heart Gallery. The single, “Every Girl In This Town,” pairs delicate clean guitar with Trisha’s dynamic delivery, and crescendos toward a vibrant refrain as it transmits an empowering reminder. On “Every Girl,” Trisha’s voice resounds and resonates louder than ever. Trisha even recently partnered with Zynga’s Farmville 2: Country Escape! with a special limited appearance in the game. www.trishayearwood.com

DORIS DAY With Love

W

ith Love features rare recordings from the Doris Day. The intimate and authentic recordings from 1952 and 1953, including The Page Cavanaugh Trio, were not previously available for release and were originally created for radio broadcast use. Doris had done some of her favorite songs in an easy, relaxed atmosphere, with no pressure of trying to make them hits. This release is the result of a labor of love by many with respect to the sometimes underrated, but always exceptional actress, musician and singer that was Doris Day. A few of the tracks include: “I’m In The Mood For Love,” “Embraceable You,” “You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me,” “Singin’ In The Rain,” “Stardust,” and “Sentimental Journey.”

MIKE HOLOBER & THE GOTHAM JAZZ ORCHESTRA Hiding Out

A

fter a decade spent hiding in plain sight as an arranger and composer, Mike Holober returned to the helm of his own stellar big band, the Gotham Jazz Orchestra for this breathtaking double album. The recording features two sweeping new suites, inspired by the grand vistas of the natural world but invigorated by the pulse of the urban jungle where the music thrives, along with a pair of standalone pieces. He is accompanied by renowned soloists Marvin Stamm, Steve Cardenas, Billy Drewes, Jesse Lewis and others. www.MikeHolober.com 38

FOREIGNER Live At The Rainbow ‘78

O

n April 27 1978, Foreigner played a sold-out show at London’s celebrated Rainbow Theatre. Forty years later, the memorable performance by the original band has been restored from the original film reels, remixed and remastered for an unforgettable and highly collectible release. Featuring the classic Foreigner lineup of Mich Jones, Lou Gramm, Ian McDonald, Al Greenwood, Ed Gagliardi and Dennis Elliott, this show captures the essence of a group who would go on to become one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time. LIVE AT THE RAINBOW ’78 includes hit singles “Feels Like The First Time” and “Cold As Ice,” from their eponymous debut album, as well as tracks from their Double Vision album, “Hot Blooded” and “Double Vision.” www.rhino.com

KEVIN SUN The Sustain of Memory

F

eaturing three extended compositions for trio, quartet, and quintet – with trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, pianist Dana Saul, bassists Simón Willson and Walter Stinson, and drummers Dayeon Seok and Matt Honor – “The Sustain Of Memory” shows Kevin Sun’s commitment to the formal and dramatic possibilities of small-group formats as well as his emergent vision within them. On the first piece on the double CD album, “The Middle of Tensions,” the work progresses through six movements uncovering new emotional valences in the shadowy post-tonal language favored by the jazz and improvised music vanguard of recent years. www.endectomorph.com

SATOKO FUJII & JOE FONDA Four

P

ianist-composer Satoko Fujii and bassistcomposer Joe Fonda present their fourth album, Four, recorded in Japan with special guest trumpeter Natsuki Tamura. The freedom and selflessness that Fonda and Fujii cite are evident from the opening moments of the album. They remain strong individuals, but they each subsume themselves to the music they are making in the moment. They are both generous musical partners, and on “Painted by Moonlight,” each uses space judiciously to leave room for the other to contribute. “Diamonds in the Rough” features some high-level melodic counterpoint between them, with one voice coexisting equally with the other.

NILE ROGERS & CHIC

T

he Here We Go Again Tour is the seventh solo concert tour by American singer-actress Cher in support of her twenty-sixth studio album Dancing Queen. This is the first time the singer has embarked on a world tour since her Living Proof: The Farewell Tour. She brings her incredible show to the Amalie with special guests, Nile Rogers and Chic. For six straight decades, only one unstoppable force has flat-out dominated popular culture — breaking down barriers, pushing boundaries, and letting nothing and no one stand in her way. With 35 smash hits, six decades of stardom, two rock-star husbands, a Grammy®, an Oscar®, an Emmy®, and enough Tony Award-winning Bob Mackie gowns to cause a sequin shortage in New York City, Cher still sells out shows across the country and the world.

SLEEP&GLOW PILLOW Fights Sleep Wrinkles When sleeping on a regular pillow (no matter the pillowcase material), your skin can become stretched and squashed, creating morning puffiness and creases. The Side cradles of the Sleep&Glow pillow help minimize skin twisting and folding. This fights and prevents sleep wrinkles, morning puffiness, and pillow marks. The pillow helps prevent and fight against sleep wrinkles that even $250+ face creams cannot fight. It also helps fight morning puffiness thanks to the height difference between the front and back bolsters. Feel refreshed and well-rested in the morning. The specially designed anatomic shape provides you with the ultimate comfort during sleep, as memory foam adjusts to the shape of your face, neck, and shoulders. Sleep&Glow’s natural fabric pillowcases come in 100% Tencel or Natural Silk. Silk doesn’t absorb moisture and creams, reduces hair breakage and tangling, and has a cooling effect. The pillow’s material has bacteriostatic, antiviral and antifungal effects. Sleep&Glow was developed in collaboration with cosmetologists and orthopedists.

V

alentine’s Day doesn’t have to be upon us for love to be in the air in Kissimmee, Florida. There are some spots that are unique and definitely out-ofthe-box locations to take your spouse, family, children, or friends. WILD ROMANCE - Wild Florida is adding to the fun with a new outdoor drive-thru safari. This is the perfect time to make memories while exploring the beautiful landscape filled with giraffes, zebras, ant eaters, and more furry and – spikey – animals. If you’d rather hug it out with a sloth, you can do that too. These fuzzy friends love giving hugs and also enjoy boops on the nose. For a true toothsome smile, visit the albino alligators. Snowflake and Blizzard are from St. Augustine, and were the first pair of breeding albino alligators to move to Central Florida. CELEBRATE YOUR LOVED ONES - Exploring the town of Celebration with Celebration Bike Rental. Along this beautiful bike trail, you can take pictures of the scenery or spot wildlife like alligators, turtles, and cranes. All different kinds of birds flock to the area and each have their own tune to sing. After a leisurely bike ride, hop into Le Macaron French Pastries for delicious desserts. There’s surely a flavor of macarons or gelato you’ll love. Stroll into Imperium Food and Wine for a glass of bubbly to cap off your evening right down the street. With charcuterie boards and tasteful wines, it’s the best way to end the night. SERENE AND PEACEFUL - Take an airboat ride

at Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures. You’ll experience a peaceful – and exhilarating – adventure. Glide over the water on this powerful boat and – if you’re lucky – you’ll spot some animals just feet away. Alligators love to nap on the surface, so they’re easy to spot. If you’re visiting in July, keep a lookout for their nests made from mud, plants, and sticks. Boggy Creek also has fun activities and games for the more competitive couples and families. From Connect Four and horseshoe to mining for gems, this spot is one for the books. AQUATIC ENCHANTMENTS - For the aquatic animal lovers, stop by SeaWorld Parks & Resorts Orlando. From happy penguins and sea turtles to pink flamingos and bottlenose dolphins, this happy place is better than a walk in the park. Stroll around and explore Dolphin Cove – an interactive area that lets you get up close with these playful animals and learn all about their behaviors. You can also explore the Dolphin Nursery where the newest marine members learn to whistle, jump, and play. SLOW AND STEADY - For some quiet time and serenity, cruise along the streaming water at The Paddling Center at Shingle Creek. You can spot all sorts of birds, alligators, and so many more wild animals. And if you’re a history buff, take a guided tour

– filled with information about the history of Shingle Creek and up-close interactions with local wildlife. You’ll spot many different species of birds and turtles lurking throughout the creek. You may even see a bald eagle. Did you know that these birds remain faithful to one mate their entire lives? They also create nests that can reach 13 feet. HORSING AROUND - Saddle up and visit Lazy H Ranch. Enjoy the serenity of riding these beautiful horses through hundreds of acres of scenic trails. Mosey along the Kissimmee Valley – which is surrounded by hundred-year-old oak hammocks and the shore of Lake Tohopekaliga. For more information about Kissimmee, visit www.experiencekissimmee.com/

Are Players Falling In Love With This Machine, Or Is This Just A Passing Attraction?

Dear Mark: I have a comment on the recent column where the questioner asked, Is there any chance that the slot machine senses a new player has not been at a particular machine for a specific period, and then pays off initially, then stops paying? Is this guy serious? A slot machine that can sense? Does he live on planet earth? Sorry, but I HAD to give you my 2 cents worth. Jerry P. Hey now, Jerry, let s be polite. First, he was a she (Joy); and there could be some merit in her thinking that a machine that can sense an incoming player. There are such machines, sort of, or at least many players believe so.

ride back to the top of the hill in one of the museum’s historic trains, along with free museum entry.

The machines I am speaking of, Jerry, are manufactured by SHFL entertainment, Inc. (previously named Shuffle Master) and are called Table Master. These slots use a video representation of a life-sized cybernetic dealer, such as an attractive, young lady, placed at the center of a fully automated table game. When these cyber dealers are on a dead game, they are in tracking mode and can appear to be looking around for some player to park their rear in one of the five player stations. If you walk by and verbalize what every dealer that ever pitched a card hears daily, Are you hot or cold, it can t hear you, nor can this virtual dealer respond to any of your physical or verbal commands, YET! However, once you are playing at the table, they do verbally prompt you to bet or fold, take insurance, or, depending on the game, any other command needing a decision on your part. I have spent hours observing players on these games communicating verbally with the dealer. It gets quite hysterical. Some players actually respond to the looks and personalities of these virtual dealers. It is one thing to have an affection for a machine that offers a decent return, another when players develop a love interest in an avatar. There’s into you, and then there is head-over-heels gaga. I have seen female Table Master virtual dealers tip a man www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

over that edge. As for playing blackjack on a Table Master machine, straight up, I like, not love them. With favorable rules like surrender, doubling and split variations that favor the player, your percentage return with smart play can be the same as that of a fair live table game. To boot, I have seen this game offered for as little as a buck a hand. For pleasurable play, that is a sizable gap versus a $25 minimum live table game on a Saturday night. There is a downside, though. On a Table Master game, expect double the number of hands dealt per hour. Involving what’s called “incremental game speed,” the more often you are exposed to the built-in house advantage on a Table Master blackjack game (i.e. the more hands you play per hour), the faster the machine eats up your bankroll. What the future holds for interactive slots for players willing to give up their hard-earned money is anybody’s guess. But, Joy’s belief that a machine can sense that a player has just climbed aboard is considerably closer to reality than you might think. Ever been in a bathroom with faucets that turn on when you put your hands in the sink, towel dispensers that spit out towel when you wave a hand in front of them, lights that turn on with motion and off when there is none, or toilets that flush when you stand up? 101

THE ALLURE OF IMMORTALITY:

An American Cult, a Florida Swamp, and a Renegade Prophet

n 1908 the body of Cyrus Teed lay in a bathtub at a beach house. His followers, the Koreshans, waited for signs that he was coming back to life. They watched changes to his body and saw his belly fall and rise with breath, even though his swollen tongue sealed his mouth. As his corpse turned black, they declared that their leader was transforming into the Egyptian god Horus. Teed was a controversial guru. At the turn of the 20th century he proclaimed himself a prophet and led 200 people into a promised new age. They set to building a communal utopia inside a hollow earth--with humans living on the inside crust and the entire universe contained within. According to Teed’s teachings, if his people focused their love on him, he would return after death and they would all become immortal. Was Teed a visionary or villain, savior or two-bit charlatan? Lyn Millner weaves a riveting story of angels, conmen, angry husbands, yellow journalism, and ultimately, hope.

Lyn Millner grew up in Jackson, MS, frequenting Lemuria Books, where she began a love of reading and reverence for writers. Her radio stories and essays have been broadcast on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and Weekend Edition and on American Public Media’s Marketplace. Her print work has appeared in the New York Times, USA Today, Oxford American, the Hollywood Reporter, and Boca Raton magazine.

TAMPA BAY MUSIC ROOTS by Charlie Souza & Keith Wilkins Images of America

T

ampa Bay’s music scene has had it’s share of very famous names associated with it, but some of the more interesting stories are about the popular local performers and bands who may not have made it to the top in the music world. In Tampa Bay Music Roots, Charlie Souza and Keith Wilkins have ferreted out the folks who’ve made the music happen in the area since 1910. If you’ve lived in the Tampa Bay area for a long time, this will be a nostalgic musical trip. If not, you will learn what and who made it happen. Of course, the names we all know and love — Elvis, Ray Charles, The Stones, Jim Morrison, etc. and their connection to the Tampa Bay area are covered as well. Charlie Souza is a national recording artist (the Tropics, Tom Petty’s Mudcrutch, and the New Rascals) and toured & recorded with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Dino Danelli & Gene Cornish, New Rascals, Bill Pascali of Vanilla Fudge, Tom Petty, Gregg Allman, and Cactus. Keith Wilkins is a longtime bay-area music columnist, concert promoter, and founder of the Tampa Bay Music Scene Historical Society.

St. Valentine’s feast day, February 14, is highlighted with the gifting of flowers, sharing symbols of love, and sending romantic cards to loved ones. While St. Valentine presented the flowers from his garden to young lovers in an effort to promote the Catholic sacrament of matrimony, his February holiday has sparked the gifts old and new. Here are some antique gifts that will warm up your Valentine’s day. VALENTINE CARDS. These small tokens are exchanged between childhood friends and starcrossed lovers alike. Examples from the early 1900s come in the form of post cards and are worth $5-$10. Vintage examples from the World War II era range in value from $10-$20 depending on condition, market, artist, and sentimental message. LOVE SEATS AND SETTEES. While the Victorians introduced us to the rules and regulations of courting one’s lover, they also made seating furniture very cozy. The widespread use of love seats for two and settees was a Victorian stable in the world of antique furniture. Eastlake furniture named for Charles Eastlake, a British designer, was known for comfortable tufted seats and backs on love seats and intertwined courting seats featuring two chairs fused together with a bar in between the two seated lovers in walnut and upholstery fabric. Courting lamps. The Victorians gave us restrictions on courtship in the form of the courting lamp. The courting lamp had graduated markings on the glass to indicate minutes. The marks showed the amount of time left before the fuel source expired and your lover must be on his way home. Today, these rare Valentine’s keepsakes are worth $50-$150. 106

CANDY. Russell Stover, Godiva, and Whitman candy in their characteristic embossed cardboard or lithographed tin boxes on a living room coffee table spoke volumes about this popular winter holiday. Once these delicious chocolates were devoured, the candy boxes were saved through the years. Today, candy boxes in the shape of hearts command $3 each at antique shops. Candy containers. Glass candy containers from the early 1900s came in all shapes and sizes. They are found in the form of animals, people, toys, and even historic buildings like the Philadelphia City Hall, U. S. Capital Building, and The White House. They are widely collected and range in value from $50 to $250. Chocolate molds. Chocolate molds are very popular, particularly on the day when an abundance of chocolate is consumed. Wooden and cast metal chocolate molds which date back to the late 19th Century are the most sought-after examples for collectors. But, be aware love isn’t cheap and these chocolate molds are expensive with values from $500 and $2000 for the finest examples. If you are going out on the town with your honey, then you’ve got to look good. VINTAGE COUTURE. Winter hats from that bygone night on the town in celebration of Valentine’s Day are all the rage. Look for period hats of faux fur and leather gloves with fanciful detailing at thrift shops. You will have to save your pennies to buy some of these name brand pieces ranging in value from $250 to $400 each. Jewelry. There is nothing quite like getting a piece of fine jewelry featuring gold, silver, or platinum with gemstones from your sweetheart. Costume jewelry is another popular Valentine’s gift by designers Weiss, Trifari, Coro, Monet, Maravella, Renoir, etc. The pieces are well made, low quality yet durable stones, and high-end period designs. A Valentine card or diamond bracelet are both fine ways to say I love you. he Crystal Mill was constructed along the Crystal

River in 1893 by George C. Eaton and B.S. Phillips as a power plant for the Sheep Mountain Tunnel and Mining Company.
