Sangria in a clever “to go” pack.

Yes, we all know that the Seminole Hard Rock is the place to go for lively casino entertainment, but the dining options there are also top notch. Some folks say “but I don’t gamble,” and I say think of the HR as a dining destination. We have sampled all of the restaurants there at different times and can attest to the high quality of food and service at all of them. Our most recent dining experience took us to the Rez Grill located on the 2nd floor of the casino, and we were super satisfied with our meals. The decor is comfortable, with muted brown tones and geometric patterns. Intriguing photos of Florida cypress trees adorn the walls, and an inviting bar separates the restaurant from the casino. A nice ambiance, and even though you are just steps away from the casino floor, you don’t Cont... really hear/notice the sounds of slots.

There were four of us dining, and we started off with a very flavorful Wild Mushroom Soup with crème fraîche, croutons, and chive oil, and just couldn’t get enough of the marvelous Benton’s Ham with house biscuits, cherry-pepper jam, and red-eye aioli. The Shrimp were huge, succulent, and served chilled, with rez spice, cocktail sauce, and gringo blanco sauce. We skipped the tasty sounding salad offerings as we had some amazing entrees coming up. Berkshire Pork Chop (jumbo!) comes with toasted farro, with Benton’s ham-bourbon demi, and is amazingly tender. St. Louis Ribs were also fall-off-the-bone tender and we all concurred the pork chop and ribs were the best we’d ever had. Lobster Thermidor was served with frisée, blood orange, pomegranate, sherry béchamel, fontina, and shitake mushroom. That, too, was superb. We all love Brussels sprouts, and the Rez grills them and adds sweet soy glaze, brandy raisins, and sesame. From the superb to the sublime, the desserts are also excellent. We sampled the Chocolate Budino with dulce de leche, soft cream, chocolate soil (that’s what they call it!) and a Lemon Curd with burnt meringue, blueberry purée, and crumble. The food choices are elegant with some up-scale down-home flavors as well, such as cheese grits, fries, and burgers. Drinks are creative, even in the presentation. Sangria comes in a juice-pack style bag so you can take it out of the restaurant with you on to the casino floor. Even if you’re not a gambler, do yourself a favor and don’t overlook the wonderful dining options at the Seminole Hard Rock. You would really be missing out. JAMES HALL Lattice

ailed as “A warm-toned lyrical player” with “harmonic sophistication” (Kirk Silsbee, Downbeat Magazine), James Hall is a versatile trombonist/composer re-imagining professional musicianship for the millennial generation. Intricately weaving together voices, melodies, ideas and genres, Lattice is the alluring and inventive release from trombonist/composer James Hall. The album is built around the harmonious combination of Hall’s dexterous trombone and the virtuosic flute playing of Jamie Baum, a study in contrasts that proves remarkably pliable and expressive through Hall’s inspired vision.

LINDA RONSTADT Live In Hollywood

L

www.rhinorecords.com

IVE IN HOLLYWOOD features amazing performances from a concert that Ronstadt recorded in 1980 for her HBO television special. Recorded at Television Center Studios in Hollywood, the concert captures Ronstadt at the peak of her reign as America’s most popular female rock singer. In concert, she was joined by an outstanding band. The CD has powerful renditions of her biggest hits – “Blue Bayou,” “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” and “It’s So Easy” – plus a previously unreleased six-minute jam of “You’re No Good.” The concert also showcased a trio of Top Ten hits from Ronstadt’s album – Mad Love – with performances of “I Can’t Let Go,” “How Do I Make You” and “Hurt So Bad.”

KEVIN SUN Trio

T

rio features bassist Walter Stinson and drummer Matt Honor on a set of complex compositions, devised from close study of the jazz tradition. On Trio, Sun crafts era-spanning compositions that are as propulsive and swinging as they are intricate and challenging. Sun appears on tenor as well as clarinet and the rarely-seen C-melody saxophone. While to the listener these songs offer knotty melodic lines and shape-shifting rhythms that are tricky but enticing to navigate, for Sun, each one posed a unique challenge. Sun’s supple clarinet can be heard on “Loading Screen” and the elegiac “Deliver the Keys.” The C-melody comes to the fore on the album’s sole standard, “All of Me,” www.thekevinsun.bandcamp.com

QUINSIN NACHOFF FLUX Path of Totality

Q

uinsin Nachoff’s Flux communicates a colourful palette of conceptual reasoning and musical expression in this release featuring saxophonist David Binney, pianist/keyboardist Matt Mitchell, drummers Kenny Wollesen and Nate Wood, plus a clutch of guest artists. Saxophonist/composer Nachoff’s overarching inspiration arose from the moon’s total eclipse of the sun in 2017. That event became a dramatic, natural metaphor for the band’s evolutionary creative process. www.whirlwindrecordings.com/

JOBSITE THEATER Shimberg Playhouse at the STRAZ www.jobsitetheater.org May 8 - June 2 - HEDDA. Hedda, still mourning the father she adored, returns from her honeymoon with a husband she doesn’t love, to a flat they can’t afford and a pregnancy she doesn’t want. ONE NIGHT OF QUEEN GARY MULLEN & THE WORKS

Great Britain’s Gary Mullen & the Works re-create a complete Queen concert, with all the pomp, power and unforgettable songs of one of rock’s greatest bands. In 2000, Gary Mullen won ITV’s “Stars In Their Eyes” Live Grand Final, with the largest number of votes ever received in the shows history. The record votes were more than twice that of the runner-up. Gary began touring on his own and in 2002 formed a band ‘The Works’, to pay tribute to rock legends Queen. Since then, ‘Gary Mullen and the Works’ have performed throughout the UK, USA, Europe, South Africa and New Zealand to sell-out audiences. The outfit have also twice rocked the prestigious BBC Proms in the Park, in front of a very enthusiastic crowd of 40,000. Between “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Killer Queen” and “We Are the Champions,” they will certainly rock you!

Nothing like Mahler in May with The Florida Orchestra

D

id you know The Florida Orchestra performs more than 130 concerts a season? Many of them for free or little cost. And that’s how the season wraps up in May, with a mix of stellar concerts in the concert hall and in the community. MAHLER’S SYMPHONY NO. 1 (May 3 & 4): Mahler’s spellbinding Symphony No. 1, “Titan,” is framed by Steve Reich’s unusual Music for Pieces of Wood and Andrew Norman’s ridiculously virtuosic percussion concerto Switch, featuring Colin Currie. Switch was written especially for Currie, who has said he feels like “being trapped inside a pinball machine’’ when performing it on instruments stretched across the stage. Michael Francis conducts. Tickets start at $18; free tickets for kids and teens in advance. FREE POPS IN THE PARK (May 10 & 12): This spring TFO performs concerts in two parks, Coachman Park in Clearwater (May 10) and Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park in Tampa (May 12) – perfect for Mother’s Day. TFO Assistant Conductor Daniel Black directs film scores, Broadway hits and symphonic favorites, with a grand finale of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and a patriotic salute. All free. Bring a blanket, picnic, and plenty of canned

Colin Currie goods for Tampa Bay Harvest. INSIDE SHOSTAKOVICH (May 23): Michael Francis blends humor, smart analysis, and live orchestra demos to take you on a journey through Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, ending with a performance of the entire symphony. You’ll never listen to music the same way again. Admission is pay what you can at the door at the Palladium Theater in St. Petersburg. TCHAIKOVSKY’S VIOLIN CONCERTO (May 24-26): TFO’s 51st season wraps up with Tchaikovsky’s dashing yet graceful Violin Concerto, a highly demanding piece that shows the virtuosic skill of TFO Concertmaster Jeffrey Multer. The concert ends on Shostakovich’s heroic masterpiece, Symphony No. 5. Michael Francis conducts. Tickets start at $18; free tickets for kids and teens in advance.

This exhibition explores the extraordinary life of renowned music promoter Bill Graham (19311991) who helped launch and promote the careers of countless rock & roll artists. As a promoter and manager, he worked with iconic artists including the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Fleetwood Mac, the Who, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, and the Rolling Stones. It also traces the indomitable spirit of a man brought to the United States as an eleven-year-old Jewish refugee fleeing the Nazis, fueling a lifelong passion and advocacy for social justice. Treasured photographs and artifacts from Graham’s early life and career will be on loan from the Graham family. An installation of “The Joshua Light Show”- the trailblazing liquid light show conceived in 1967 by multimedia artist Joshua White, which served as a backdrop to many Graham-produced shows - will be customized by White specifically for the exhibition. It will be one of several gallery components designed to evoke the sights and sounds of the era.

The Dali Museum Presents

Magritte & Dali Coverage and photos by Melissa W. Martino

T

he Magritte & Dali exhibit at the Dali Museum is the first time the two surrealist icons have had a solo pairing. Magritte & Dalí takes viewers on a journey from the late 1920s to the early 1940s, the period when the two artists spent significant time together and displayed their works in the same Surrealist exhibitions. Although both had very different and distinctive approaches to their respective paintings, they were equally committed to implementing practices that challenged reality and generated fuller freedom of imagination and experience. Their works also employ several shared themes which are explored throughout the exhibition. Over 30 works are on display including photos of the artists. Visitors will enjoy the special interactive “cloud room” and the opportunity to capture images of themselves intermingled with surrealist icons & symbols. The exhibit continues through May 19, 2019. HUNTING CHARLES MANSON

The Quest for Justice in the Days of Helter Skelter

I

by Lis Wiehl with Caitlin Rother

n the late summer of 1969, the nation was transfixed by a series of gruesome murders in the hills of Los Angeles. Newspapers and television programs detailed the brutal slayings of a beautiful actress as well as a hair stylist, an heiress, a businessman, and other victims. In the weeks and months that followed, law enforcement faced intense pressure to solve crimes that seemed to have no connection. Finally, Charles Manson and members of his “family” were arrested. The trials that followed once again captured the nation and forever secured Manson as a byword for the evil that men do. Former federal prosecutor Lis Wiehl has written a propulsive, page-turning historical thriller of the crimes and manhunt that mesmerized the nation.

A prominent trial lawyer, Lis Wiehl is also a professor at NY Law School and host on the Law & Crime live trial network. Caitlin Rother is a NY Times best-selling author or co-author of 12 books, and is a writing and research instructor. Nelson Books • www.thomasnelson.com

LUCKY DOG How Being a Veterinarian Saved My Life by Dr. Sarah Boston

W

hat happens when a veterinary surgical oncologist (laymen’s term: cancer surgery doctor) thinks she has cancer herself? Enter Sarah Boston: a vet who suspects a suspicious growth in her neck is thyroid cancer. From the moment she uses her husband’s portable ultrasound machine to investigate her lump — he’s a vet, too — it’s clear Lucky Dog is not your typical cancer memoir. She takes us on a hysterical and thought-provoking journey through the human healthcare system from the perspective of an animal doctor. Weaving funny and poignant stories of dogs she’s treated along the way, this is an insightful memoir about what the human medical world can learn from the way we treat our canine counterparts. Lucky Dog teaches us to trust our instincts, be our own advocates, and laugh while we’re doing it. Dr. Sarah Boston is an associate professor of surgical oncology in the department of small animal clinical sciences at the University of Florida. She is also President of the Veterinary Society of Surgical Oncology. She lives in Gainesville, FL. www.houseofanansi.com

Betting Patterns Won’t Change Casino Advantage

Dear Mark: What are your thoughts about using a betting progression method in playing blackjack against a continuous shuffling machine? Is playing against shuffle machines ever a good idea? Tim R. Raising or lowering your wagers without the knowledge of the composition of the deck – card counting – does not change the house edge. In this respect, a betting progression will not help you regardless of whether the shuffle is continuous or hand shuffled.

EXCALIBUR HOTEL & CASINO: SENSATION FUERZA BRUTA www.excalibur.com The dynamic and immersive theatrical production will performs 10 shows weekly in a technologically advanced tent. FUERZA BRUTA delights the senses through music, emotion and kinetic aerial imagery. With incredible visual effects, FUERZA BRUTA breaks free of the confines of spoken language and theatrical convention to transport audiences to a parallel reality where emotion takes control. At every show, FUERZA BRUTA guests are ushered onto the main stage, where they are surrounded in a 360-degree spectacle with performers demonstrating spectacular feats just inches away.

At the end of the day, Tim, house edge will stay the same irrespective of your betting patterns. As for playing against shuffle machines, consider me not a fan. My beef against a continuous shuffler is that they invariably favor the house because more hands are dealt per hour when the dealer does not have to stop and shuffle the cards. From the casino’s perspective, time is money. The more hands per hour, the better for the house. From a player’s perspective, speed kills in a casino environment. The longer you are exposed to the house advantage, the more mayhem on your bankroll. The deal here, Tim, pun intended, is that you are already spotting the house an edge against your play; a faster game helps them, never you. Dear Mark: My game of choice is video poker. Typically, I bet quarters, but if I am having a bit of luck, I bump it up to dollars. As you often mention, I try my best to identify the best pay tables along with using basic strategy. It seems lately that I am having much better luck on www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

dollar machines, more so than playing quarters. Do I see better cards because of the coin denomination that I choose? Tom S. The coin denomination of the machine that you are playing on has no effect on what you are drawing in video poker. The random number generator that determines what cards you will see on the screen is the same chip in a quarter machine as it is on a dollar game. Playing dollars versus quarters has no influence on the “frequency of winning.” Your luck on dollar games, Tom, could simply be because the pay tables where you play are probably better on the dollar machines than the quarter ones. For instance, on a Jacks or Better machine and employing expert play, a 9/6 Jacks or Better game returns 99.5 percent. If you drop the full house and flush payoffs to the 8/5 that you probably see on a quarter game, that return drops to 97.3 percent. The two plus percent difference might not seem like a whole lot, Tom, but it is plenty enough to give you more than just the illusion of winning on a dollar game.

New Seascapes by Frank Lind at Kingsborough Art Museum

T

he new Realist seascapes of famed American painter and longtime Pratt Institute professor Frank Lind will be on display in a new art exhibition at the Kingsborough Art Museum (KAM) at 2001 Oriental Boulevard in Brooklyn, NY. The Kingsborough Art Museum is located on the campus of Kingsborough Community College, The City University of New York and museum director, Dr. Brian E. Hack will host the show, Tide and Time: Paintings by Frank Lind from April 17 through May 15, 2019. The exhibition focuses on the theme of the seascape and brings together many of Lind’s recent and masterful compositions dedicated to his long considered subject of the Atlantic Ocean. Frank Lind has been addressing the sea and shore for a good part of his long and impressive art career. A Rhode Island native, Lind is a lover of water sports and also creates works of art so dramatic and true to life that viewers can almost hear the giant waves crashing when viewing Lind’s paintings. Rocks, moss, and shells loom large in Lind’s seascapes as he nearly achieves the impossible – trying to visually stop time in its watery tracks. Lind’s various seascapes visually capture the moment just before a wave hits the beach or as rushing sea water fully envelops a shoreline rock formation. Upon close examination, Lind’s paintings in the KAM exhibition detail the unique anatomy of a wave as it crests with its complex colors and various hues. Lind’s paintings take on and highlight the vast expanse of the ocean yet make it relatable, intimate,

86

close. Gallery patrons will marvel at the highly realistic artistic results of this show as very few artists can capture the power and grace of nature as poignantly as Frank Lind. Lind has been drawn to the long and important tradition of American landscape painting put forth by such famous painters as William Merritt Chase, Winslow Homer, and James A. M. Whistler, among others for decades. He is not afraid to go beyond the typical and concentrate on the movement of the sea and how time and space change along the active shoreline. In this new exhibition, Lind shows his ability to capture and highlight the power of the ocean from the rough Atlantic and beyond. Dramatic scenery, attractive colors, and new compositions of this time-tested subject matter are all united in this fine exhibition by a master at the height of his talents. Frank Lind continues to paint from his studio in Brooklyn, NY and his work resides in important public and private collections worldwide. Dr. Lori Verderame is a Ph.D. appraiser, author and award-winning TV personality on History channel’s #1 show, The Curse of Oak Island. With a Ph.D. from Penn State University in art history, Dr. Lori has curated exhibitions, published books on American art, and appraised art and artifacts the world over. Dr. Lori presents antique appraisal events and travels lecturing about fine art, antiques, museum collections, and history.
