Sangria in a clever “to go” pack.

Yes, we all know that the Seminole Hard Rock is the place to go for lively casino entertainment, but the dining options there are also top notch. Some folks say “but I don’t gamble,” and I say think of the HR as a dining destination. We have sampled all of the restaurants there at different times and can attest to the high quality of food and service at all of them. Our most recent dining experience took us to the Rez Grill located on the 2nd floor of the casino, and we were super satisfied with our meals. The decor is comfortable, with muted brown tones and geometric patterns. Intriguing photos of Florida cypress trees adorn the walls, and an inviting bar separates the restaurant from the casino. A nice ambiance, and even though you are just steps away from the casino floor, you don’t Cont... really hear/notice the sounds of slots.

There were four of us dining, and we started off with a very flavorful Wild Mushroom Soup with crème fraîche, croutons, and chive oil, and just couldn’t get enough of the marvelous Benton’s Ham with house biscuits, cherry-pepper jam, and red-eye aioli. The Shrimp were huge, succulent, and served chilled, with rez spice, cocktail sauce, and gringo blanco sauce. We skipped the tasty sounding salad offerings as we had some amazing entrees coming up. Berkshire Pork Chop (jumbo!) comes with toasted farro, with Benton’s ham-bourbon demi, and is amazingly tender. St. Louis Ribs were also fall-off-the-bone tender and we all concurred the pork chop and ribs were the best we’d ever had. Lobster Thermidor was served with frisée, blood orange, pomegranate, sherry béchamel, fontina, and shitake mushroom. That, too, was superb. We all love Brussels sprouts, and the Rez grills them and adds sweet soy glaze, brandy raisins, and sesame. From the superb to the sublime, the desserts are also excellent. We sampled the Chocolate Budino with dulce de leche, soft cream, chocolate soil (that’s what they call it!) and a Lemon Curd with burnt meringue, blueberry purée, and crumble. The food choices are elegant with some up-scale down-home flavors as well, such as cheese grits, fries, and burgers. Drinks are creative, even in the presentation. Sangria comes in a juice-pack style bag so you can take it out of the restaurant with you on to the casino floor. Even if you’re not a gambler, do yourself a favor and don’t overlook the wonderful dining options at the Seminole Hard Rock. You would really be missing out. MICHAEL DULIN My Beloved

y Beloved is an intensely personal album by pianist/ composer Michael Dulin. It is a beautifully melodic and passionate testament to enduring love, inviting you to live your own love story through 12 romantic solo piano songs. My Beloved blends classic and contemporary influences to create a beautifully melodic collection that critics are saying “Is Like A Long And Passionate Love Letter” and “Makes Every Time You Listen To It Feel Like Valentine’s Day.” Live and relive the magic of great love, through the prism of these timeless and evocative love songs. www.michaeldulin.com

STEVE TYRELL That Lovin’ Feeling On That Lovin’ Feeling, Steve Tyrell celebrates what he calls “the Great American Songbook 2; the next generation of the Songbook,” recording seminal rock era classics penned by legendary songwriters who are also longtime friends. While sharing the magic of timeless songs by such songwriting teams as Carole King and Gerry Goffin, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil and as well as Burt Bacharach, Neil Sedaka, and Carole Bayer Sager, That Lovin’ Feeling also has spirited guest vocal appearances by B.J. Thomas, Neil Sedaka and Bill Medley in addition to backup singer Judith Hill and Tyrell’s daughter Lauryn Tyrell. The set also includes instrumental contributions by Stoller, Chuck Leavell, and saxophonist Dave Koz.

JAMES HALL Lattice

H

ailed as “A warm-toned lyrical player” with “harmonic sophistication” (Kirk Silsbee, Downbeat Magazine), James Hall is a versatile trombonist/composer re-imagining professional musicianship for the millennial generation. Intricately weaving together voices, melodies, ideas and genres, Lattice is the alluring and inventive release from trombonist/composer James Hall. The album is built around the harmonious combination of Hall’s dexterous trombone and the virtuosic flute playing of Jamie Baum, a study in contrasts that proves remarkably pliable and expressive through Hall’s inspired vision.

LINDA RONSTADT Live In Hollywood

L

www.rhinorecords.com

IVE IN HOLLYWOOD features amazing performances from a concert that Ronstadt recorded in 1980 for her HBO television special. Recorded at Television Center Studios in Hollywood, the concert captures Ronstadt at the peak of her reign as America’s most popular female rock singer. In concert, she was joined by an outstanding band. The CD has powerful renditions of her biggest hits – “Blue Bayou,” “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” and “It’s So Easy” – plus a previously unreleased six-minute jam of “You’re No Good.” The concert also showcased a trio of Top Ten hits from Ronstadt’s album – Mad Love – with performances of “I Can’t Let Go,” “How Do I Make You” and “Hurt So Bad.”

KEVIN SUN Trio

T

rio features bassist Walter Stinson and drummer Matt Honor on a set of complex compositions, devised from close study of the jazz tradition. On Trio, Sun crafts era-spanning compositions that are as propulsive and swinging as they are intricate and challenging. Sun appears on tenor as well as clarinet and the rarely-seen C-melody saxophone. While to the listener these songs offer knotty melodic lines and shape-shifting rhythms that are tricky but enticing to navigate, for Sun, each one posed a unique challenge. Sun’s supple clarinet can be heard on “Loading Screen” and the elegiac “Deliver the Keys.” The C-melody comes to the fore on the album’s sole standard, “All of Me,” www.thekevinsun.bandcamp.com

QUINSIN NACHOFF FLUX Path of Totality

Q

uinsin Nachoff’s Flux communicates a colourful palette of conceptual reasoning and musical expression in this release featuring saxophonist David Binney, pianist/keyboardist Matt Mitchell, drummers Kenny Wollesen and Nate Wood, plus a clutch of guest artists. Saxophonist/composer Nachoff’s overarching inspiration arose from the moon’s total eclipse of the sun in 2017. That event became a dramatic, natural metaphor for the band’s evolutionary creative process. www.whirlwindrecordings.com/

T

he pedigree of ‘60s trio Cream – Ginger Baker’s son Kofi Baker, Jack Bruce’s son Malcolm Bruce and Eric Clapton’s nephew Will Johns – are stopping in Sarasota With their 50th Anniversary World Tour, celebrating the extraordinary music and legacy their family members created on the heels of the 50th anniversary since the original lineup’s farewell U.S. tour of 1968. First launched in 2017 to rave reviews in Australia and New Zealand, The Music of Cream performed over 40 shows in 2018 across North America and the United Kingdom. Throughout the extensive multi-media show, Kofi Baker (drums), Malcolm Bruce (bass, vocals) and Will Johns (guitar, vocals) perform songs such as “Sunshine of Your Love,” “Crossroads,” “Spoonful” and “White Room” and tell personal stories, while footage of their fathers and mentors is shown on the big screen. During its short lifespan, Cream was an explosive musical cocktail that provided the super-group blueprint for others to follow. The group’s third album, Wheels of Fire (1968), was the world’s first platinum-selling double album, and collectively they sold more than 15 million copies of their albums worldwide. Not surprisingly, Rolling Stone ranked the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group (inducted in 1993) as 67th in their ‘100 Greatest Artists of All Time’ list. Apart from an equally brief reunion in 2005 of seven shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall and New York’s Madison Square Garden, Cream retained an almost mythological status in the music world, right up until the passing of Jack Bruce in 2014. This, for many fans, marked the end of an era and an acceptance that there would never really be another opportunity to celebrate the group’s legacy. That is, until The Music of Cream – 50th Anniversary World Tour emerged.

ONE NIGHT OF QUEEN GARY MULLEN & THE WORKS

Great Britain’s Gary Mullen & the Works re-create a complete Queen concert, with all the pomp, power and unforgettable songs of one of rock’s greatest bands. In 2000, Gary Mullen won ITV’s “Stars In Their Eyes” Live Grand Final, with the largest number of votes ever received in the shows history. The record votes were more than twice that of the runner-up. Gary began touring on his own and in 2002 formed a band ‘The Works’, to pay tribute to rock legends Queen. Since then, ‘Gary Mullen and the Works’ have performed throughout the UK, USA, Europe, South Africa and New Zealand to sell-out audiences. The outfit have also twice rocked the prestigious BBC Proms in the Park, in front of a very enthusiastic crowd of 40,000. Between “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Killer Queen” and “We Are the Champions,” they will certainly rock you!

Fresh New Work Spotlights Florida Orchestra Violinist

I

f a thoroughly modern orchestra wants to make its mark beyond dusting off the busts of Beethoven and Brahms, it needs to perform thoroughly modern music to reflect our own time. In April, TFO tips its hat to the new with Grammy-nominated composer Anna Clyne, who makes her Tampa Bay premiere with The Seamstress, featuring TFO’s own Sarah Shellman on solo violin. Clyne calls The Seamstress an “imaginary oneact ballet’’ and describes her work as follows: “Alone on the stage, the seamstress is seated, unravelling threads from an antique cloth laid gently over her lap. Lost in her thoughts, her mind begins to meander and her imagination spirals into a series of five tales that range from love to despair, and that combine memory with fantasy.’’ She drew inspiration from the short poem A Coat by William Butler Yeats. Composed in 2015, the 23-minute piece is for violin, orchestra and amplified electronics. It’s part of a concert highlighting the influence of women, with guest conductor Gemma New leading TFO in Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 and Schumann’s Manfred Overture. Concerts are April 12-14 in Tampa and St. Petersburg, with a Sunday matinee. Free tickets for kids and teens in advance, for this Tampa Bay Times Masterworks concert.

Sarah Shellman Other upcoming TFO concerts include: RAGTIME, BLUES AND ALL THAT JAZZ (April 5-7): Fan favorite trumpeter Byron Stripling showcases classics from Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway and more. Jeff Tyzik conducts. TASTE OF VIENNA (April 24-25): Savor the best of Vienna, with Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte Overture, Beethoven’s Fidelio Overture and Strauss Jr.’s Roses from the South Waltz. Daniel Black conducts this morning Coffee concert. Free coffee and doughnuts! THE MUSIC OF JOHN WILLIAMS (April 27, 2 & 8 pm): Featuring some of the most recognizable scores in cinematic history, including Star Wars, Jaws, Harry Potter, Schindler’s List and ET. Daniel Black conducts in the Raymond James Pops series, with a Saturday matinee.

This exhibition explores the extraordinary life of renowned music promoter Bill Graham (19311991) who helped launch and promote the careers of countless rock & roll artists. As a promoter and manager, he worked with iconic artists including the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Fleetwood Mac, the Who, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, and the Rolling Stones. It also traces the indomitable spirit of a man brought to the United States as an eleven-year-old Jewish refugee fleeing the Nazis, fueling a lifelong passion and advocacy for social justice. Treasured photographs and artifacts from Graham’s early life and career will be on loan from the Graham family. An installation of “The Joshua Light Show”- the trailblazing liquid light show conceived in 1967 by multimedia artist Joshua White, which served as a backdrop to many Graham-produced shows - will be customized by White specifically for the exhibition. It will be one of several gallery components designed to evoke the sights and sounds of the era.

The Dali Museum Presents

Magritte & Dali Coverage and photos by Melissa W. Martino

T

he Magritte & Dali exhibit at the Dali Museum is the first time the two surrealist icons have had a solo pairing. Magritte & Dalí takes viewers on a journey from the late 1920s to the early 1940s, the period when the two artists spent significant time together and displayed their works in the same Surrealist exhibitions. Although both had very different and distinctive approaches to their respective paintings, they were equally committed to implementing practices that challenged reality and generated fuller freedom of imagination and experience. Their works also employ several shared themes which are explored throughout the exhibition. Over 30 works are on display including photos of the artists. Visitors will enjoy the special interactive “cloud room” and the opportunity to capture images of themselves intermingled with surrealist icons & symbols. The exhibit continues through May 19, 2019. HUNTING CHARLES MANSON

The Quest for Justice in the Days of Helter Skelter

I

by Lis Wiehl with Caitlin Rother

n the late summer of 1969, the nation was transfixed by a series of gruesome murders in the hills of Los Angeles. Newspapers and television programs detailed the brutal slayings of a beautiful actress as well as a hair stylist, an heiress, a businessman, and other victims. In the weeks and months that followed, law enforcement faced intense pressure to solve crimes that seemed to have no connection. Finally, Charles Manson and members of his “family” were arrested. The trials that followed once again captured the nation and forever secured Manson as a byword for the evil that men do. Former federal prosecutor Lis Wiehl has written a propulsive, page-turning historical thriller of the crimes and manhunt that mesmerized the nation.

A prominent trial lawyer, Lis Wiehl is also a professor at NY Law School and host on the Law & Crime live trial network. Caitlin Rother is a NY Times best-selling author or co-author of 12 books, and is a writing and research instructor. Nelson Books • www.thomasnelson.com

W

hat happens when a veterinary surgical oncologist (laymen’s term: cancer surgery doctor) thinks she has cancer herself? Enter Sarah Boston: a vet who suspects a suspicious growth in her neck is thyroid cancer. From the moment she uses her husband’s portable ultrasound machine to investigate her lump — he’s a vet, too — it’s clear Lucky Dog is not your typical cancer memoir. She takes us on a hysterical and thought-provoking journey through the human healthcare system from the perspective of an animal doctor. Weaving funny and poignant stories of dogs she’s treated along the way, this is an insightful memoir about what the human medical world can learn from the way we treat our canine counterparts. Lucky Dog teaches us to trust our instincts, be our own advocates, and laugh while we’re doing it. Dr. Sarah Boston is an associate professor of surgical oncology in the department of small animal clinical sciences at the University of Florida. Probability Guarantees Nothing

Dear Mark: Every so often we hear about someone winning the lottery or hitting the grand prize on a progressive slot machine, but these odds are astronomical! How is it that someone, somewhere, always seems to be able to get lucky and beat the astronomical odds? What I’m trying to get at is that these odds are astronomical, and hence, the jackpot shouldn’t be hit, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

EXCALIBUR HOTEL & CASINO: SENSATION FUERZA BRUTA www.excalibur.com The dynamic and immersive theatrical production will performs 10 shows weekly in a technologically advanced tent. FUERZA BRUTA delights the senses through music, emotion and kinetic aerial imagery. Johnson T. Any jackpot that has a probability of hitting, like, for instance, a Powerball ticket or a progressive slot machine, ought to eventually pay off if it is played long enough. When given a set of possibilities and enough trails, a favorable outcome should occur for some lucky bloke. That said, there are times that I am not entirely convinced that every gambling probability will come to fruition over time. One such surety unrealized is the a Special Bonus Keno ticket that many casinos offer. All you have to do is hit 19 out of 20, and you win $250,000. Sounds easy, right? Well, here is where I am going to need some convincing that this is even a possibility. Here’s the arithmetic. If you were to play one keno ticket per second, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, according to laws of probability, you would catch 19 out of 20 once every 93,420,116 years. Oh, and the odds of hitting it? Drum roll please – two quadrillion, 946 trillion, 096 billion, 780 million to one. Another is this popular ticket in Nevada—the 15 spot. The chances of your hitting it are 428 billion to one. Consider, Johnson, that www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

no person has ever hit a solid 15 spot, a solid 14 spot, and to the best of my knowledge, a 13 out of 13 since gambling became legal in Nevada in 1931. Makes you sort of wonder why it’s popular, doesn’t it! So, should you even be playing? As long as you realize that hitting “the big one” is a neverin-your-lifetime probability, I am not opposed to dabbling a few – I mean a few – disposable dollars’ worth of Lottery Quick Picks for a shot at a once-in-a-lifetime possibility. However, limit those few-andfar-between dollars to when the jackpot exceeds the true odds of hitting it. With Mega Millions, that number is one in 258,890,850, which is an easier catch than the Powerball game at 292,201,338 to one. With jackpots in the millions, I can see how easy it is for players to inhale jackpot helium. But you need to ask yourself, are the spoils worth the cost of the hunt? Then again, even if your chances of hitting the big one are a teensy weensy bit better than zilch, you cannot beat those cosmological odds if you don’t play.

Collecting American Girl Dolls S

o, you don’t think the millennial generation are saving objects, collecting vintage pieces, displaying antiques, well maybe you should think again. I have been evaluating the collections of 20 and 30 year old collectors for a long, long time. They are seasoned collectors that know a lot about the market for a special, historic collectible called American Girl Dolls. American Girl Dolls were produced by the Pleasant Company and came onto the scene in 1986. The first three dolls captured the background of historical figures in the form of 9-year-old girls living at specific times in American history. The first dolls produced from 1986 to 1991 were character dolls Molly McIntire, Kirsten Larson, and Samantha Parkington. These three original American Girl Dolls are valuable collectibles and attract both adults and children audiences today. The dolls are robustly traded online, at American Girl Doll events and on social media sites. The dolls’ collectors are very active on Instagram showing off their varied customization of the figural dolls, fashion outfits, and books. The values for American Girl Dolls vary based on several factors including condition of the doll body, hair, outfits, and accessories as well as the type of doll and the popularity of the doll’s character and story. Some of the doll characters were featured in television and full-length feature movies making those particular American Girl Doll characters better known and thus, more valuable than other dolls including Samantha, Kit, and Molly. The three original American Girl Dolls were produced by the Pleasant Company prior to the company being acquired by Mattel, Inc. Some dolls have since been discontinued making those particular dolls somewhat rare and typically more pricey and more desirable with collectors. To recognize the American Girl Dolls, collectors have to learn the background of each doll. Arguably the most valuable of the dolls include: Molly, Kirsten, and Samantha.

The Molly McIntire doll represents a 9-year-old girl living during World War II, circa 1941-45. Like all American Girl Dolls, Molly has books and accessories based on her story including eye glasses, skirt, blouse, sweater, socks and shoes. Molly, like other American Girl Dolls, has additional accessories called “Meet accessories” including a purse, wartime Steel penny from 1943, and a picture of her father inside of a locket. A fine example of the Molly McIntire doll is valued in a range between $1,000 to $10,000 in fine condition. Molly is the topic of a line of American Girl Doll books. Also, the character was featured in the American Girl Television Movie entitled Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front which debuted in 2006. Another American Girl Doll of the original three dolls is named Kirsten Larson, a Swedish immigrant living in the 1850s as a pioneer family member in the Minnesota territory. Kirsten has traditional period boots and braided hair looped and tied with ribbons. Based on the related book, “Meet Kirsten Larson”, the character comes with a wooden spoon and a heartshaped amber necklace typical of the girl’s native Scandinavia homeland. In very good condition, Kirsten dolls are actively traded online. The Samantha Parkington doll was in production from 1986-1991. Samantha was an orphan who lived in the late 19th/early 20th Century. Her accessories that impact the doll’s value include a Victorian dress, stockings and shoes, and a large hair bow. When collecting American Girl Dolls, look for historical figure dolls in original condition with styled hair, original outfits, and character accessories, when available. If you think your favorite millennial isn’t into collecting, then ask them if they have an American Girl Doll from childhood. Odds are, they do.
