Hank Siegel’s Baselworld Watch Picks: 1. The new Rolex Sky-Dweller in stainless steel is destined to become the next Daytona. Whereas Rolex is known for its professional performance watches rather than for fancy complications, this watch is special, featuring an annual calendar, GMT function, and a most interesting setting mechanism that requires only rotating the bezel. It’s sharp looking, and a steal at $14,400 in stainless (vs. $40,000 to $50,000 in gold).

2. The Rolex Cellini line, known for classic-looking, quiet watches, just introduced its first moon phase edition. It’s a real beauty! We loved the use of alternative metals, including a beautiful golden copper. 3. Patek Philippe had several great introductions, including their Ref. 5320G with a new perpetual calendar. With a cream-colored ceramic dial, it’s a classic nostalgia look that recalls the 1940s and ’50s. Very elegant!

GRENADINE This powerful ruby red elicits a sense of confidence and packs a punch alongside autumn neutrals. Worn as a bold lip or structured dress, Grenadine is a classic true red that looks amazing on everyone.

TAWNY PORT Autumn is a season of change, often tossing pastels and summer neons for dark, sophisticated colors. Tawny Port is no different; it’s a deep go-to burgundy that doubles as a neutral while remaining a daring color. BALLET SLIPPER A slightly dusty rose that matches a pair of flushed cheeks, Ballet Slipper is the embodiment of the oh-so-trendy ‘millennial pink.’ Worn with darker shades, like Tawny Port, it brightens up an otherwise somber look.

BUTTERUM Warm and buttery, like its namesake drink, Butterum is a toasty shade that conjures up images of a cozy atmosphere, a crackling fire and a crisp fall breeze. Often found in classic pieces, like woolen coats or cashmere sweaters, this almond hue is a chic and comfy choice.

NAVY PEONY This anchor shade is one of the darker colors in the palette, taking the crown from black as the new neutral. An intense blue, Navy Peony pairs with some of the more natural hues, like Butterum and Neutral Gray.

NEUTRAL GRAY The shade with the most self-explanatory name, Neutral Gray is the tried-and-true color that can be used as an accent or all over. Taking inspiration from overcast fall mornings, this hue is perfect with any pattern and material. SHADED SPRUCE A punchy jade hue, this shade is often found in the forest, adorning the ever-blooming evergreens. This true autumnal color evokes the feeling of protection and easily completes fall and winter wardrobes.

GOLDEN LIME Another green in the palette, Golden Lime is more of an accent color. This vivid chartreuse is the perfect shade to jazz up a true neutral and add some gold tones to a look.

MARINA This cool-toned blue is a great transition for any leftover summer pieces you want to bring into the new season! Marina adds a fresh feel to some of the darker and gloomy shades that so often fill a fall palette.

AUTUMN MAPLE Jack-o’-lanterns, scarecrows and pumpkin spice lattes: these are a few of autumn’s favorite things! This tawny orange is the quintessential shade that comes to mind when thinking of fall and immediately creates a warm look.

BASELWORLD 2017 Watch aficionados enjoyed a once-in-alifetime opportunity to view the latest Rolex introductions, straight from the annual Baselworld show in April. An unsurpassed collection of these stunning timepieces was available for viewing at the luxe event, which included lavish fare such as a raw bar with shrimp and caviar, ice sculptures and specialty cocktails. Pioneer of the wristwatch since 1905, Rolex is at the origin of landmark innovations in watchmaking, including the first waterproof wristwatch, the Oyster, and the Perpetual rotor self-winding mechanism. For over a century, Rolex watches have accompanied explorers and achievers around the world, from the top of the highest mountains to the deepest reaches of the ocean. For institutions with limited acquisition funds, this is particularly meaningful. “Oftentimes relationships with such patrons develop over time,” she continues, “as shared interests about art and artists and even the role of the museum in a given context evolve. Collectors usually care deeply about the legacy of their gifting, and therefore this mutual respect and understanding creates a partnership that is ultimately rewarding for them as well as the museum and its public.” Private collectors have helped round out the OCMA’s collection by adding new artistic styles and voices. “In recent years, OCMA has been fortunate to receive many artworks from Los Angeles collectors Tracy and Gary Mezzatesta,” Coblentz says, “who made the generous decision to donate significant works to museums throughout the US for public benefit. Last spring, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s already-staggering collection of artistic achievement spanning the globe and the centuries became even better: Oscar L. Tang donated Riverbank, a 10thcentury Chinese landscape painting considered one of the earliest and most important masterpieces of its kind. Tang is a descendant of the dynasty that bears his name, and his gift significantly enhances the museum’s already impressive array of Asian art. Meanwhile in Kansas City, Missouri, Henry Bloch (the 94year-old founder of H&R Block) donated 29 important Impressionist works by Van Gogh, Monet and Cezanne to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The Marion and Henry Bloch Foundation also donated $12 million to renovate museum galleries where the paintings are displayed. And the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida has organized a campaign to encourage giving by creating the 21st Century Society. Looking to appeal to a new generation of private donors, it is led by Gil Maurer and Irene Karp, both museum trustees who have promised important canvases to the museum. Endowed gifts have become increasingly important to museums to support their missions of preservation, education and scholarship, and to ensure they are capable of harnessing the latest technologies for those very purposes. “Museum collections are often a reflection of the communities that support them,” says Cassandra Coblentz, senior curator at the Orange County Museum of Art in

Philippe Lebru and the art of contemporary clockmaking.

W

hen we recently discovered this sculptural collection of wall and tall clocks at the 2017 Watch Fair in Basel, Switzerland, we felt we had stumbled upon something extraordinary. Then when we met its creator, Philippe Lebru, we knew we were face to face with genius! Since 1993, Lebru has been experimenting with oversized, graphic (some say subversive) timepieces, and with the relationship between individuals and time. “I imagined a clock that could rise above time, a clock that would connect the past to the future, tracing a line that defines our relationship to a greater force,” he explains. This greater force, no doubt, is what catapulted the artist to considerable fame. In 2005, his collection was awarded the Grand Prix at France’s Concours Lepine for inventions. He then won a gold medal for horology at the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva. In 2011, Lebru produced two monumental clocks for the city of Besancon (birthplace of Victor Hugo, Gustave Courbet and Louis Pasteur): one for its high-speed train station and one for its art museum. In 2015, he was commissioned to produce a five-meter-high skeleton clock, the largest in the world, which currently marks the moments in downtown Tokyo. And speaking of commissions, you too can own one of Lebru’s horological masterpieces. ore than 2,000 people a day came to view Patek Philippe’s collection of about 450 exquisite timepieces dating back to 1530, including borrowed museum pieces, supercomplications, rare handcrafts and complex movements. The NYC exhibit (only the fourth of its kind to ever take place) ran for 10 days in July, but its impact on more than 20,000 guests will surely last a lifetime. Larry Petinelli, president of Patek Philippe USA, spoke to us about the importance of this historic exhibit. “Our goal was to attract not just the uber-collectors, but also a new generation of young people who might lack a passion for horology but are perhaps interested in history or sports or music. Despite the serious price points, we tried to make the exhibit accessible rather than stuffy. We featured actual artisans at work (enamellers, engravers, marquetry woodworkers) and highlighted some of our more renowned US patrons—Joe DiMaggio, Duke Ellington, JFK—and the timepieces most meaningful to them.” John F. Kennedy remains a superhero in the minds of both Americans and citizens of the world. The timepiece chosen to represent this beloved US president was a Patek Philippe autonomous quartz desk clock that displays the time in Moscow, Washington DC and Berlin, a gift that symbolized

direct communication between Washington and Moscow. The clock (borrowed from the National Archives with strict regulations) was designed by Heinz Wipperfeld and was presented to Kennedy on the day after his famous Ich bin ein Berliner speech. “I was born in December ’63,” says Petinelli, “so I wasn’t around in Kennedy’s lifetime. But I was always intrigued by that era: from JFK’s assassination to the Vietnam War to the first man on the moon. That’s why this exhibit is as much about history as art.” We talked about the incredible Stern family, how they bought the company in 1839 (they’d been a supplier to Patek) and have remained a family business through four generations, an anomaly in the luxury market. (Actually Gen 5, Thierry Stern’s two teenaged sons, were in NYC for the exhibit, thoroughly fascinated…) We talked about the fact that, other than fine watches, few things in life are simultaneously useful, meaningful and investment-worthy, which is why Patek Philippe watches are (as their fabulous ad campaign reminds us) handed down from generation to generation. “It’s hard to imagine passing down my cell phone,” quips Petinelli. Going Back In Time T

he past decade in watchmaking has been marked by an undeniable trend: the introduction of “vintage reissue” models. Today, many watch companies are offering as many “old” models as new ones, and for companies with long, storied histories, vintage reissues allow them to connect with their roots, embrace their particular heritage and inject new life into the icons of their past. These vintage reissue models have enjoyed almost universal popularity; they mimic groundbreaking style from decades ago, and at the same time carry with them all the luxury, polish and reliability of a modern, stateof-the-art timepiece. While there are certainly many vintage purists who cherish the pursuit of an original, authentic model, there are a handful of reasons why a watch enthusiast might choose to purchase a vintage reissue instead. First, these updated versions may look like their vintage ancestors on the outside, but often what beats inside them is an updated, modern movement. These modern movements are easier to service and less prone to malfunction. In many cases, modern reissues utilize automatic movements (an automatic movement is one in which a watch’s mechanical movement is wound automatically by a weighted rotor that moves with the motion of the wearer’s wrist). Depending on the design of the original, many companies have found ways to incorporate a date function into the dial’s layout. Last, many vintage watches seem small by today’s standards, so brands have increased the size of their vintage reissues by a few millimeters.

No manufacturer has led the way with vintage reissues like Tudor. Perhaps because the brand was not sold in the US between 2004 and 2013, Tudor chose to re-enter the market with the Heritage Collection, a line that reminded its audience of the iconic sport models that the brand released in the ’60s and ‘70s. Back then, many of the components of a Tudor watch were made directly by Rolex; today, the brand remains linked to the world’s most famous watchmaker, but Tudor has become a powerhouse in its own right. Tudor’s offerings are still held to a similarly high standard as Rolex’s, but the brand started to produce manufacture movements on its own in 2015. As a result, its product line is a remarkable marriage of modern watchmaking and vintage styling.

Another primary reason why vintage reissues are so desirable is their cost when compared to many vintage models. In some cases, the original vintage versions of these watches are so rare and coveted that they’re either prohibitively expensive, or in some cases, simply unavailable no matter the budget. So vintage reissues allow for watch enthusiasts to have access to iconic designs at a fraction of the cost. There’s also a much lower cost to ownership of a vintage reissue piece; they’re covered

hough vintage Tudor Submariners remain in demand, Tudor waited until 2012 to reinterpret its iconic dive watch with the Black Bay and Pelagos references. Both models echo the design codes of the Tudor Subs from the 1960s and 1970s. Subsequent editions of the Black Bay added various colors and case materials to the line, including the Black Bay Bronze launched in 2016, and the two-tone Black Bay Steel and Gold, which launched this year at Baselworld. With the global cult following that the Black Bay has amassed since 2012, it’s easy to forget that the very first splash Tudor made in the vintage reissue market was with the Heritage Chrono. The style, released in 2010, is a modern take on the Tudor Oysterdate Chronograph from 1971, nicknamed the “Monte Carlo.” The update featured an automatic movement—virtually a necessity in a modern sport watch. There are smaller updates as well: the two subdials are reversed; the bezel markings now allow for the watch to be used as a GMT (the original bezel featured a tachymeter); the indices are painted with Superluminova instead of Tritium. The styling of the Heritage Chrono, particularly the “Homeplate” dial, recreates the feeling of a vintage watch, but with modern updates.

qually impressive is Tudor’s 2017 release of the Heritage Black Bay Chrono. With this introduction the brand welcomes its first fully integrated chronograph with self-winding movement, column wheel and vertical clutch. Since the introduction in 1970 of the Tudor Oysterdate Chronograph (its first chronograph), Tudor has continued to produce watches that are closely tied to the world of motorsports. In the same way, since 1954 Tudor has been constantly improving its professional divers’ watches. The new hybrid Heritage Black Bay Chrono dares to combine the aquatic heritage represented by the Black Bay family with the queen of the racetrack: the chronograph. Remaining faithful to the Black Bay aesthetic with the famous snowflake hands—a brand signature since 1969—the Heritage Black Bay Chrono model offers optimum readability against the domed matte black dial. Another brand that’s unafraid to reconnect to the icons of its past is Jaeger-LeCoultre. One of its most successful reissues was of its first dive watch, the Memovox Deep Sea. The original was only produced for a handful of years in the 1950s and 60s, and less than 1,100 were ever produced. Not only was this model known as a veritable dive watch, but it also included an alarm function that vibrated with a particular intensity. Jaeger-LeCoultre reissued two versions of the Memovox Deep Sea: the model intended for the European market has a cleaner dial and a smaller logo, while the American market dial says “LeCoultre” and “Deep Sea Alarm Automatic” in large script. Why the difference? Apparently when the watch was first introduced, Jaeger-LeCoultre did not have the rights to use its entire name on its American products! Much has changed since then, but it’s very cool that Jaeger-LeCoultre preserved this marketing quirk from almost a half a century ago.

hese two models are master examples of how to nail a vintage reissue. The movements have been upgraded to automatic movements with 45-hour power reserves, and the sizes have been slightly increased, though their yellowed markers and case design suggest that they might be watches passed down by a grandfather. Like the originals, however, these two reissue models were made in limited quantity; fewer than 1,000 of the European version and fewer than 400 of the American edition were produced. IWC has a long history of creating definitive pilot’s watches, and its vintage reissues definitely tap into this heritage. An IWC reissue that’s worth noting is the Portugieser Hand-wound 8 Days 75th Anniversary Edition. Based off a design originally created in 1939, this reissue cements IWC’s tendency to produce large watches (both the original and the reissue clock in at 43mm), and the elegance of its older timepieces. With a stylish Art Deco design, this watch houses IWC’s modern Calibre 59215, featuring a massive power reserve of almost 200 hours. The original model, which was so large because it borrowed a movement from a pocket watch, certainly did not offer that level of reliability! Somehow in this reissue, IWC found a way to make a modern watch that looks 75 years old; even the added date window looks as if it could have been part of the original design. This watch comes in two case materials—steel with a dark dial and red gold with a cream dial—which are limited to 750 pieces and 175 pieces, respectively.

he reissue that garnered the most buzz this past year was certainly the TAG Heuer Autavia. In early 2016, TAG Heuer announced the “Autavia Cup,” an online competition allowing TAG Heuer fans to vote on the design of a historic Autavia reissue. The voting began at Baselworld 2016, and offered fans 16 different versions of the Autavia from which to choose. In the end, the fans chose the Autavia 2446 Mark 3, a design from 1966 known as the “Rindt” Autavia after Austrian Formula One world champion Jochen Rindt. Original versions of this watch have been known to sell at auction for tens of thousands of dollars, so this reissue allows many TAG Heuer fans to have access to a watch they likely would never be able to afford. Like many other major manufactures, TAG Heuer increased the case size to 42mm (the original was 38mm) and added a newly designed automatic movement, the Heuer-02 Chronograph Calibre. The new design also added a date window in the bottom subdial. With its vintage styling and historic fan-involved development, the 2017 TAG Heuer Autavia sets the bar high for what a company can accomplish with a vintage reissue. These four brands stand as remarkable examples of how a watch manufacture can strive to produce new, cutting-edge designs, but also look to its past for inspiration. When you consider what these five brands all have in common—a long history of iconic design, a distinctive vision for what they want their watches to be and a reputation for building reliable, impressive movements—it’s no wonder why these vintage reissues are in such demand. Decades down the line, these timeless designs will become the next timepieces for collectors to covet.

Fall ushers in sculptural statements and multi-purpose functionality.

as jewelry ever been more fun to wear? Whether you lean toward delicate charms, sparkling florals or bold geometry, there are plenty of ways this season to tie it all together and make it hip, elegant and uniquely your own. Versatility is key right now, and designers are expanding their collections with that in mind. Look for necklaces that convert to bracelets or multi-finger rings that fold into one. We’re still stacking and layering, so there’s plenty of room for individual expression. You probably don’t need to retire anything in your jewelry wardrobe this fall to remain on point. sapphire from faded to inky. Look for hoops set with translucent tanzanite or rose-cut fancy sapphires, and pendants strung on multi-strands of sapphire beads gradated from pale to indigo. Tanzanite is another option to consider. Hueb elevated tanzanite to new levels by combining it with the sparkle and elegance of diamonds in white gold—most recently setting clusters of delicate trillion cuts (curved triangles) on slender white gold bars in its Trilliant collection. Flesh-baring openwork designs like this will continue to get more elegant and dramatic.

pal continues strong, showing up as the standout in cocktail rings accented with diamonds, or colored gems like blue topaz and peridot that bring out the stone’s inner rainbow. Watery blue moonstones are another crowd favorite, and we’re seeing other misty blues and bluegreens like aquamarine and chalcedony. Along this line, David Yurman is pairing chrysoprase and turquoise in the Chatelaine collection. Also expect to see more of the newcomer gem aquaprase, a mintygreen chalcedony discovered in Africa in 2014. But the hottest hue on the horizon will have you matching your gems to your jeans. Fashion designers from Dior to Calvin Klein to Stella McCartney showed denim ensembles for fall, and we predict denim blue will be the primary gem color of 2018. Jewelry looks are already showing the denim hues of London blue topaz and the whole spectrum of blue

ne way to update the layers at your throat is to add a personalized, engraved charm or pendant. Another is to add one of the new, more refined chokers, destined to become a go-to basic. David Yurman added lots of gold this year, including rose gold. One way to open your existing Yurman silver stack to the gold to come: add a piece or two from this season’s mixed-metals, like those polished gold accents in his silver Chatelaine collection. Whether you normally go for the gold or stick to silver, a mixed-metal lariat is destined to become a wardrobe basic. Open-ended rings and bracelets are everywhere, ranging from those slender diamond-tipped bangles that Halle Berry stacked on one wrist at the Oscars to the bold geometry of baguette rings. Where the statement bracelet is concerned, it’s all about female empowerment. The power cuff can be worn stacked, one on each wrist like Coco Chanel, or Wonder Woman-style as this show-stopping (bullet-deflecting?) statement piece from Penny Preville.

OUTER SPACE

T

hat celestial trend we’ve been seeing for a couple years is moving away from the yoga influence of astrology and zodiac constellations and drifting into the far reaches of outer space. Maybe it’s all the talk of reviving space exploration, but a UFO has landed in the design zeitgeist. Chanel and Comme des Garçons were among those who introduced astronaut-inspired silver garb on the runway this year. Jessica Biel created Oscar buzz with a diamondmounted fringe collar worn with her form-fitting metallic gown. Priyanka Chopra sported matching platinumand-diamond cuffs on each wrist on the same red carpet. You can get in on this space-age trend with any of the bold, geometric cuff bracelets or collars on offer. In some cases, it’s a little subtler: concentric gold circles dotted with gems and pearls, hinting at planets revolving around an axis. A simpler way to get a piece of that night sky: add a starburst. These exuberant bursts of celestial energy are everywhere. Try a blackdiamond star choker, cluster earrings, or a delicate bangle of white diamond stars to add sparkle and texture to your stack.

ith The Jazz Age exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt whetting our appetites once again for Deco, and Past is Present: Revival Jewelry at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (through August 2018), vintage jewelry lovers are newly dazzled by the glamour and craftsmanship of past eras. You don’t need to bid at auction to score revival style. Today’s designers are reinventing looks that have been around for decades or, in some cases, millennia. Some designers are bringing Deco back with colored diamonds, or setting pyramid-shaped colored stones in that familiar stepped, architectural gold. Even Stephen Webster has played with Deco, with his Chrysler Buildinginspired detachable diamond earrings. Digging further back, other designers have played off the tarnished finish and aged texture of long-buried antiquities by mounting them in bright, granulated gold.

There’s nothing else quite like Atom Moore’s “watch portraits,” which splice details from different watches into a single unreal image for an effect that’s dreamlike yet sharply focused. Here, he tells us more about his unique art.

to see. I print the portraits on giant sheets of metal, which is uncommon and reminds you of the watch’s original form. They’re interesting on paper, but on metal they really come to life.

Why are you drawn to watches? What makes a successful watch portrait? They’re essentially mashups. You can get incredibly granular with macro shots, down to the finest detail. Then I take details from one watch and details from another and manipulate them to make something different. I don’t go into the process expecting to create a certain thing in a certain time period. Sometimes I just like two images. And I work on [the portrait] until it feels done.

Why are people drawn to this art? It isn’t just for watch nerds; it’s visually interesting art. Seeing the details of something so close up changes your perspective on that thing. And the combination adds this unreal element that’s interesting. People will ask, “Is this real? Is this an actual watch?” People see in the images what they want

Photographing jewelry and watches is hard to do. Most jewelry is extremely reflective from all angles, so if you don't take that into account your photo won’t show the quality. My wife and I are both collectors. We were introduced to the RedBar Crew, who meet up [at a New York bar] to talk about and share watches. I got access to really cool watches without having to go into a store, which is huge. And I like seeing how watches change over time. I’ve gone through photos of vintage watches and you can see, oh, in 1974 they changed how the dial looks. Watches age, just as everything does, and they change in very different ways.

ther than selecting a groom, few decisions are more fraught than what a bride will wear on her wedding day. Two things can help: a head start on choosing a dress (ideally six to eight months) and staying true to your tastes.

C L A S S I C CO M E B AC K This season features a marked return to a traditional 1950s and 1960s influence. “Think Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy,” says Yumi Katsura’s creative director, Paulette Cleghorn. Look for understated, classic silhouettes that are “more tailored, more structured,” she says. Cristina DeMarco, VP of New York’s Bridal Reflections, agrees. “Girls are looking to bring back the romance of the A-line, off-the-shoulder and cap sleeve.” Trending: fit-and-flare rather than trumpet skirts, and classic boatneck and Bardot necklines. Detachable trains or fuller skirts take a sheath gown from ceremony to reception. Substantial fabrics such as heavy satins and silk failles suit these styles. Complete the look with a sparkly brooch or modern pearl jewelry that’s a step up from simple strands.

Cathedral veils are back, decorated with lace borders or scattered with pearls or crystals. “It allows the gown to feel grand, but once removed, softens the dress,” says DeMarco. Statement alternatives for the more daring bride abound, including high-neck designs, short dresses, separates and even one-piece pantsuits. Fringe, fur, pleats, cascading center ruffles and silk swirls replace layered looks. Capelets and capes, open-gauntlet hand coverings and gloves of all kinds add drama. Shoulder-sweeping fringe earrings or a bold choker are the perfect on-trend jewelry elements to round out these looks. “Brides today are just more free,” concludes Cleghorn. Steer clear of necklaces here to let your décolletage take center stage; try oversized floral studs or a vine-like cuff.

Even if you’re getting married indoors in the 21st century, there’s a way to evoke outdoor elements and add touches that recall the Renaissance or Victorian periods. Many couples are doing just that. The current word in wedding floral design is natural: flowers are given their own space rather than cramped into shiny vessels where they stand uniform, and plenty of greenery is added to mimic nature. “We’ve been seeing a trend for letting nature act on its own, with loose, asymmetrical designs that give the flowers a lot of room,” says Erin Hornstein, owner of Plum Sage Flowers in Denver, Colorado. The trend is being driven both by florists and their clients, with much of the inspiration coming from social media. Image-driven sites such as Pinterest and Instagram are where couples, wedding planners and florists all showcase their latest creations. “These sites give brides access to so many ideas,” says Hornstein. “They can type just a couple of words and get so many images.” Greenery has become very popular, including garland runners placed down the center of long tables, or leafy suspensions hanging over the altar or reception tables,

conveying the sense that they're growing. The use of greenery even extends to bridal bouquets and to bridesmaids. Instead of corsages, there’s a trend towards flower “bracelets” along with flower hair combs and even full crowns. Michelle Hannah, founder of NYC-based Wild Floral Designs, is finding that clients want to evoke an English garden even when the wedding is indoors and in a city; one recent bride did this by requesting an archway with hanging branches and roses. “This new movement feels very earthy, organic and garden-like in a way flowers didn't necessarily feel before, when they felt compact and uniform,” she says. “It's all leaning to a very creative and personalized style for couples to show off what they regard as beautiful and interesting.” BY CHRISTIAN CHENSVOLD

SAY “I DOUGH!” Custom doughnuts are the new wedding cake.

T

hese days, trendy, artisanal doughnut shops have popped up all around the country, and those circles of yeasty goodness—dreaded carbs 15 years ago—are back with renewed vigor. So it only makes sense that they’d make an appearance at weddings. Within the past year or two, an increasing number of doughnut walls, tiered cakes, trucks and madeto-order stations have popped up at receptions and as part of the “after-party” (another emerging wedding trend, as late-night comfort food replaces more formal offerings). “It’s becoming more popular,” affirms Heather Jones, the catering sales director for Wente Vineyards in Livermore, California. “We also do an action station with beignets, making them right in front of the guests and providing, say, a cabernet-chocolate dipping sauce. Or perhaps fresh churros with a bourbon-cream sauce. It’s all about PERSONALIZE taking things to the next level.” One big advantage is that it’s easy to personalize the doughnut experience (compared to, for example, a chocolate fountain). For Brooklyn’s Angela and Charla Harlow-Rothschild, “we tried to be very intentional about everything in our wedding to reflect who we are as a couple,” says Charla. Amidst the foodstuffs were two doughnut displays, from Dough and Dun-Well, both local shops. “Dough was the first of the new, trendy spots in Bed-Stuy,” says Charla, “and they hire people from the neighborhood, so we wanted to give them a shout-out.” Angela notes that “Dun-Well is cool, because they create delicious doughnuts that are vegan and gluten-free, perfect for friends who couldn’t share in the cake.” Supporting local business was also important for Kelsea Kirven Gallagher and her husband Patrick at their wedding in Richmond, Virginia. They brought in the Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen doughnut truck for their late-night snack. The Mennonite family-owned business has a huge following for its unusual misshapen glazed donuts. “[The business is] wonderfully grounded in family and faith,” says Kelsea, “serving as a great role models for our new marriage. And our guests are still talking about those warm doughnuts two years later!” Jones notes that the desire for a personal touch is common for couples who opt for doughnuts at Wente as well. Rather than order trendy variants like Hibiscus-Passion Fruit, “they will have one or two [classic] flavors that are ‘their’ doughnuts. s you sip good wine and listen to live music in a lush garden with twinkling lights overhead, you might think you’re at a rustic café in the French countryside, especially since the menu features traditional French items like steak au poivre, coq au Riesling, and steamed mussels. But check out the bottom of the menu and you’ll find the “Can to Table” offerings: spiced calamari in ragout sauce from Portugal, mussels in escabeche from Spain, and scallop rillettes from France. The States are even represented with habanero-smoked oysters from the Willapa Bay in Washington.

Preserved at their freshest point with utmost care by a handful of suppliers using the highest-grade olive oils and sauces, these delicacies are eaten at the finest restaurants in Portugal and Spain. The rare seafood is caught in the cool waters along the European coast, and would clearly be difficult to enjoy stateside were it not preserved. Fortunately, restaurants are catching on. Foodies in New Orleans frequent N7, the aforementioned eatery tucked away in a secret garden in the Marigny. The restaurant has no website, no phone, not even a sign other than a hand-painted N7 on the wooden fence surrounding the property. Still, the place is always packed and full of life. Patrons enjoy the extensive wine list, the exquisitely flavored, freshcooked fare and the upscale canned food. Artistically decorated cans are served on long, wooden boards with sliced baguettes, various sauces and small tasting forks. Several other restaurants around the country are also serving conservas (Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor, MI; Donostia, Huertas and Maiden Lane in NYC; Bar Vivant in Portland, OR; and Aatxe in San Francisco), so expand your palate and enjoy a taste of the exotic, a high-end dining experience straight from a can—best enjoyed with a fabulous glass of wine (from a bottle)! tirelessly to build a sanctuary for his mission church on Long Island. The watch, which bears an inscription from 1957, is from the only banker who would lend the reverend money for the construction. “I wear my Rolex every day,” says Hinsch, “but when I go to church, it’s always the Wittnauer.” It’s not uncommon for a watch’s story to span generations, even when it just involves digging it out of storage and getting it running again. Take Maxwell Raymond Rich, a 26-year-old attorney in Manhattan. In 1956, his grandfather rewarded himself for his hard work as a stockbroker with a goldplated Omega Seamaster Automatic. Five years later he found himself with a wife and bouncing baby boy. When Rich was set to graduate law school, he, too, decided to reward himself and began talking about buying a watch. That’s when his mother remembered grandpa’s Omega stashed away in a box somewhere, forgotten for decades. “We decided that, in honor of my father’s upcoming 55th birthday, we should have the watch serviced and restored,” recounts Rich. “Omega sent it to Switzerland for six months, and the watch arrived a few days before his birthday. He loves telling the watch’s history and how it pays honor to his father. My brothers and I look at the watch as one of our few heirlooms from Grandfather.” (Hopefully they won’t have to fight over it!) You could say the value of the Omega—the sentimental value, that is—had been reappraised. And isn’t that the nature of younger generations: to value the things of their grandparents’ era, things that their parents deemed old-fashioned or even worthless? We should all aspire to be scrupulous reappraisers of all things in our lives, in an effort to fill them with as much beauty and meaning as possible. BY CHRISTIAN CHENSVOLD

ew luxury brands can create lifestyle marketing campaigns that rival the true stories of real people. Heirloom watches and jewelry pieces are often passed on with tales attached to them—sometimes banal, sometimes sparkling with romantic adventure. The term “sentimental value,” after all, is hardly a sentimental term, for it describes something very real. Some possessions are more valuable to us than their monetary worth would suggest because of the emotions and memories attached to them. That’s why, when we lose something with sentimental value, it really hurts the heart. “I went to Knox College, the same college my father did,” says Jack Dechow. “Right after I decided to attend, my father gave me a watch inscribed with the college’s crest that his parents had given him upon graduation. It was a simple gold watch with a metal band. I wore it a lot over the summer, but it was stolen out of my car the month before I embarked for campus. I really wish I still had it, so I’d have a tangible gift to remember my father and grandfather by when they inevitably pass.” Much has been noted about Millennials’ low interest in things like status logos and analog watches. But it turns out many in this generation value luxury heirlooms more than we expected. To own a fine piece is one thing, but to wear a fine piece with a tale behind it elevates it from mere status symbol and makes the wearer a storyteller.
