GET A HOBBY PAMPER YOUR POOCH

If you want to get creative and crafty in 2024, follow these simple steps to make Homemade Peanut Butter Bacon Dog Treats that are sure to please the pups! We will show you how to turn a few simple pet-friendly ingredients you’ll already have on hand into pet-approved bite-sized tasty treats.

This recipe has a prep time of just 10 minutes and will make about 15 fourinch treats. To start, gather your ingredients. You will need:

• 1 cup of creamy peanut butter

• 3/4 cup of nonfat milk

• 1 large egg or 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce

• 2 cups of whole wheat flour

• 1 Tablespoon of baking powder

• 1/3 cup of oats

• 2-3 strips of cooked and chopped bacon

Step 1

To begin, line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set them aside while you preheat your oven to 325°F.

Step 2

Good news: This is a one-bowl recipe! Yay for easy cleanup! Grab a large bowl and gently combine the peanut butter, milk and egg. We recommend using a wooden spoon or silicone spatula for best results. When all is mixed, go ahead and add in the flour and baking powder.

Step 3

Now for the fun part! It may help to empty the mixture onto a floured surface and mix the dough well. Then, mix in the oats and, of course, the bacon. The dough should reach a thick and heavy consistency by this point.

Step 4

Grab a rolling pin, flour it and start rolling out the dough. Use a cookie cutter of any shape or size to cut out your treats. Have fun here, and choose a shape and size that suits your pup! Then, arrange the treats on your baking sheets.

Step 5

Pop your treats in the oven for 18-20 minutes until lightly browned on the bottom. Then, pull them out and flip them over to cook for another 10-12 minutes.

Step 6

If they aren’t devoured right away, the leftovers will store great covered at room temperature for one week or in the fridge for about two weeks.

Our Tips and tricks!

• Remember to consult your vet about any allergies your pet might have.

• Unbleached all-purpose flour is completely safe for pet consumption; if that is all you have handy, no worries! Whole wheat flour is recommended because of the vitamins, proteins, fibers and minerals it contains. It’s great for your pup’s health.

• Feel free to get creative and add ingredients you know your pooch will love. Additional options include pumpkin, carrots, sweet potatoes and more.

• Pop them into the freezer for a chilled treat for your pet.

• Try out different shapes for different holidays if you’re feeling festive!

NEVER HAVE I EVER... FOSTERED A RESCUE DOG

In 2017, I lost my heart dog. I rescued him in 2015 from a county shelter the day before he was slotted to be removed from the world. Though I only had two years with Beijing, he was the dog that would change everything for me. He was 110 lbs of pure heaven, and I’m still devastated that he is gone.

Pulling Beijing out of imminent danger shattered my heart and opened my eyes. After he passed away from a brutal and aggressive cancer, I decided to go once again into the fray. I’ve always loved giant dogs and even rescued my first Great Dane when I was 12. So, I decided to try fostering, and that’s when I found the Bullpen Way Station & Sanctuary.

The Bullpen is a woman-owned and run giant breed rescue that advocates for and saves the lives of thrown-away dogs in need. I started my fostering journey with them in 2017 and have since adopted three dogs from their program and have fostered more than a dozen sweet pups.

So, let’s talk about why fostering matters and what it looks like—the reality of it.

Local shelters are drowning in animals and rely on rescues and adopters to save as many lives as possible. Rescues desperately need foster homes to pull the dogs in most urgent need from danger.

Fostering opens a space in your home and heart for a needy dog (or cat) and gives them time and space to decompress. After a healthy acclimation period, foster animals benefit from learning to be in a family, home and safe space, helping them gain the manners, confidence and trust they need to succeed in a forever home.

In February, my family welcomed our newest foster pup, Buckshot. This sweet boy came to us with buckshot still in his pelvis from being shot and irreversible damage to his hips from being run over. He was thrown away broken and bloody, landed in a shelter with little hope, and the Bullpen was only able to pull him out because my family said, “We will take him!!”

Fostering is an INCREDIBLE gift to everyone involved to successfully shepherd a dog from shelter to safety to a family who will love them fully.

Things you need to know:

• Rescues set foster homes up for success.

• Foster animals often need months to acclimate; patience is non-negotiable.

• It is not hard to say goodbye when your foster pet is adopted. It may be tearful, but it is incredibly rewarding to see them off into a better future.

• Fostering saves lives.

To get started, find the rescue you want to work with and fill out their foster application. Once you are approved, they will work to match you with a good fit and coach you on next steps. Many local shelters also implement fostering programs to combat the overwhelming numbers of animals continuously being surrendered or found as strays.

If you can’t foster, consider volunteering or donating to help rescues continue to do their backbreaking work with success.

TIPSY: SIPS FOR THE SPRINGTIME

Spring has sprung!

What better way to welcome warmer days than with a couple of our favorite spring cocktails here at The DiG? During springtime in Georgia, plenty of fruits and vegetables are at their peak; our favorites include strawberries and rosemary. So head out to your local farmers market and grab some fresh ingredients for these fun cocktails!

STRAWBERRY CHAMPAGNE

First up! Give yourself something to celebrate and toast with a glass of Strawberry Champagne.

This fresh and fruity cocktail is perfect for brunches, showers and celebrations! This recipe makes four drinks, but modifications are simple for when these become the hit of your party!

You will need:

• Champagne: The key for this cocktail is that the wine is as dry as possible. When shopping, look for bottles labeled “brut,” meaning dry, which gives this cocktail a perfect flavor and texture. Feel free to substitute for other options like prosecco or cava; as long as you’ve got a dry sparkling wine, you’re in the clear!

• Strawberries: Pro Tip: When shopping for fresh strawberries, don’t just grab the biggest ones. The perfect strawberries will be glossy and colored even down to the stem! If it’s a particularly sunny day, freeze your strawberries and follow these steps for a chilled treat.

• Lemon Juice: To bring it all together!

Instructions

Step 1

Add one cup of strawberries to a food processor or blender with one tablespoon of lemon juice. Blend until a smooth puree forms.

Step 2

Add one to two tablespoons of the puree to the bottom of a champagne glass and top it off with champagne!

Step 3

Give your drink a gentle stir to create a perfect springtime ombre in your glass! Cheers, sip and enjoy!

ROSEMARY COCKTAIL

Take your happy hour up a notch with this delicious rosemary cocktail. This quick and easy recipe will make one cocktail and is a great way to use your fresh Georgia produce in a mix with some spring citrus!

You will need:

• Ice

• 1 blood orange, juiced

• 2 ounces of gin

• ½ ounce Rosemary simple syrup

• 2 ounces tonic water

• 1 sprig of fresh rosemary

• 1 slice of blood orange

Instructions

Step 1

Grab a double old-fashioned glass and a cocktail shaker; fill each with ice.

Step 2

Add your blood orange juice, gin and rosemary simple syrup to the shaker. Give it a shake for about 15 seconds.

Step 3

Strain the mixture into your prepped glass and top it off with tonic water.

Step 4

Stir to combine and add one sprig of rosemary and one blood orange slice to top it off!

22 CRAVE

TASTE TEST: LOVING HUT

The name Loving Hut may not ring a bell for most Gwinnettians. In fact, to most, it’s a quaint-looking hole in the wall just off Holcombe Bridge Road in Peachtree Corners. But in reality, it’s so much more than that. Loving Hut is an international franchise on a mission to spread love and peace to communities worldwide through delicious vegan food. With over 200 locations in 35 different countries, they’ve got the “worldwide” part down.

Although it’s a franchise, no two locations have identical menus. Most Loving Huts, including the one in Gwinnett, are intentional about curating a menu that meets the needs of the local and regional communities they’re based in. Tammy Chiu, a passionate employee, explains that their menu changes at least three times a year to include customer requests and different international dishes.

The only thing about their menu that doesn’t change is that every dish is vegan. The franchise is dedicated to a greater mission that goes beyond just serving healthy and hearty fare. They view veganism as a means to a happier, healthier world and do their part by offering recipes and education for those curious about switching to a vegan or plant-based diet.

“There are no secrets!” says Tammy. “I will share any of my recipes with anyone who asks.”

As they put it, going vegan, or even opting for vegan just a few times a week, is a way to put yourself and the environment first all at once. But they don’t stop there; Tammy has graciously given away hundreds, if not thousands, of vegan products and dishes to local charities supporting low income seniors and at monthly events hosted by the restaurant.

“About half of all the dishes we serve have been given away for free,” says Tammy. “Helping the world and the community is the most important thing to me.”

There’s a true vegan revolution brewing under the Loving Hut roof. By complete happenstance, the restaurant has acquired a team of all vegans. And if that’s not a testament to their dedication, regulars have rave reviews about the food and support they’ve discovered at Loving Hut.

“I know every vegan spot in town and Loving Hut is the very best,” said a dedicated customer who frequents the eatery at least twice a week.

We were curious to test these claims, so we sat down for a 100% vegan meal (as two non-vegans) and it’s safe to say we were thoroughly impressed.

CRAVE

Our meal began with a selection of some of their most popular appetizers. These included Basil Rolls, a vegan version of spring rolls served alongside a peanut butter dipping sauce, and Cha Cha Cha, a platter of vegan shrimp for dipping in their delectable sweet & sour sauce.

The Basil Rolls were everything we love about spring rolls; they were light and bright, stuffed to the brim with fresh veg, chewy noodles and soft bits of soy protein. But nothing compared to the Cha Cha Cha. I’ve never tasted a tofu alternative so close to the real thing (maybe even a little better). If I didn’t know otherwise, I would have been convinced we were muching on popcorn shrimp.

After appetizers, I was eager to taste one of their entrees. With so many meat-heavy dishes like spaghetti, burgers, nachos and sweet & sour chicken, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about eating one of my favorite foods with tofu protein instead of the real thing. I opted for the Saintly Stir Fry and Mina went with the Sweet & Sour Divine. While it wasn’t quite the tender chicken breast or chewy steak bits we had come to associate with the two dishes, the tofu protein was delicious and perfectly seasoned. It transformed each dish into something new, but equally as delicious as the non-vegan version.

“What people don’t realize, is the meat isn’t what brings the flavor,” says Jeanne Minier, a friend of the restaurant and long-time vegan. “It’s all in the sauce, and anyone can replicate their favorite meat dishes by using the same seasonings, sauces and marinades with tofu.”

We concluded our visit with two slices of heavenly cake; one coconut and one black forest. As for dessert, delicious! The cake layers of both were a perfect balance of fluffy and moist, while the frosting was light, sweet and just enough to cure my sweet tooth.

While I can’t say I’ll be converting to veganism anytime soon, I am happy to join the roster of non-vegan Loving Hut fans! With friendly staff and a loving community that will make you feel just as good as their healthy cuisine, Loving Hut should be a go-to for Gwinnett-based vegans and non-vegans alike.

“That’s what we’re here for after all: To help people understand vegan can be delicious.” -

EXPLORE

TAILS & TRAILS OKEFENOKEE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

We believe life is meant for exploring - especially when your furry best friend is at your side. If you want to explore more pet-friendly destinations in 2024, look no further than Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, a 680-square-mile ecological wonder. As one of the most outstanding examples of an ecologically intact swamp in North America, this sprawling sanctuary of natural wonder and mosaic of habitat, plants and wildlife is not just for two-legged adventurers, but is also a paradise for our fourlegged friends. Other than boardwalks used by sun-bathing alligators (we advise you to avoid those), Okefenokee is dog-friendly! They also have a pet-friendly campground if you want to stay the night under the stars, but remember to leave no trace to preserve this pristine landscape.

First things first, let’s talk about responsible pet ownership, as this refuge provides habitat for threatened and endangered species and should be explored responsibly and with sustainability at the forefront of the mind. While Okefenokee is dog-friendly, dogs must be leashed at all times. Also, don’t forget to bring some waste bags to keep the refuge clean for everyone to enjoy. With the basics covered, it’s time to hit the trails!

With three unique swamp entrances, each with its own facilities and special character, you can tailor your experience from a few hours of family fun by land or water to a multi-day immersion in the solitude of the swamp’s 438,000 acres. Okefenokee has guided boat tours, daily nature shows, canoeing, kayaking and boating, cultural sites, educational programs and more. Entrance fees are required (and may vary) at each entrance. Whether you have three hours or three days, stop by the Richard S. Bolt Visitor Center to learn more about all that Okefenokee offers.

A sensory delight for both you and your dog, one of the highlights of Okefenokee is the view from the Okefenokee Swamp Park Observation Tower, the tallest point in the entire swamp. You can climb to the top and be above the treetops for a 360-degree panoramic view of the Okefenokee. If you feel more adventurous, opt for a canoe or kayak excursion. Your furry companion will love the rush of the breeze ruffling their fur from their front-row seat. With their senses on high alert, sniffing out every new scent and hearing every rustle of wildlife, it’s sure to be a blast! We don’t know about you, but we work up an appetite any time we adventure! Luckily, Okefenokee offers plenty of scenic, petfriendly picnic areas to recharge and refuel with your pup by your side.

Curious about the best time to visit? Each season is different, from the wildlife you’ll see to the flowers blooming, so visiting during any season is recommended. Generally, the summer months can be quite hot and buggy (Georgia, we are looking at you), so plan an early morning trip if you are going from July to early September. Luckily, there is plenty to do that can be spread across several visits no matter what season you choose, and you will find that Okefenokkee is a place that you will want to return to again and again.

Whether you and your dog spotted (or barked at) wildlife together, shared a snack under the shade of a cypress tree or simply enjoyed each other’s company in one of nature’s wonders, your adventure at Okefenokee will be a tail-wagging tale your pup will brag about to friends on your next trip to the dog park. After all, life is meant for exploring - especially when you have your best furry friend by your side. Plan your visit by checking out visittheswamp.com.

In a study a few years ago, it was found that around half of millennials who were searching for a home said that their dog, or the desire to have one, would influence their future home-buying decisions. Fast forward to the current day, and DINKWADS are taking over TikTok. Don’t worry - it’s not an insult. It stands for "double income, no kids, and a dog." Today, people are increasingly wanting to hang out and have fun with their pets, and some pets even have higher social media followings than human influencers do. Welcome, fellow animal lovers, we believe pets are a part of the family, too.

If you’re anything like us, then you probably love finding unique things to do with your four-legged best friend and helping your pets live their best life. With Georgia’s pleasant climate, parks galore and an abundance of pet-friendly businesses and restaurants, there are plenty of unique, paw-some spots for pups and pet parents alike. FETCH PARK

Tired of having to make the choice between hanging out with your friends or taking your dog to the dog park? Check out Fetch Park, a community-driven, social hub for dog owners and lovers. With several locations around Atlanta, there are plenty of opportunities for you to enjoy this park with your friends and your dog’s friends. Featured by CNN, The Travel Channel, Discovery Channel and more, Fetch Park was Atlanta’s first full-service restaurant and dog park bar. This trailblazing concept for an off-leash dog park bar and social hub for dog owners is a must-visit for humans and dogs looking for their new favorite activity. While other dog parks can run the risk of having unsocial or aggressive dogs, at Fetch, all owners sign a liability waiver and abide by rules in place to mitigate risk for furry friends. To further ensure the safest experience, the park has a membership system with the option for monthly and annual memberships. The daily fee for a non-membership is $10 for dogs. If you are going with a group of friends but have no dog and just want to enjoy the pet-friendly atmosphere, Fetch is free for humans to enter and enjoy. For a list of rules and FAQs, visit fetchpark.com/faq.

CHATTAPOOCHEE DOG PARK

Easily accessible from various parts of Duluth, the playfully named Chattapoochee Dog Park is both human and dog-approved and consistently named on top dog park lists for the Atlanta area and beyond. With distinct areas for large and small dogs, a safe and enjoyable playtime is available for dogs of all sizes.

There’s an unspoken bond between a nature lover and their dog, and Chattapoochee’s proximity to the Chattahoochee River adds a scenic charm and picturesque setting. Chattapoochee is praised for its beautiful riverfront setting and amenities such as agility obstacles for dogs to exercise, splash areas for dogs to cool off in warmer months, and walking trails for both owners and dogs to enjoy. Along with an adorable name, this park is sure to please both you and your pet.

THE CATFE

If you have been reading through these experiences as a cat person and are looking for an experience that speaks to your cat-loving heart, this one’s for you. The Catfe, located in Lawrenceville, GA, provides the purrfect atmosphere for caffeine and cat lovers alike. The Catfe is not simply a coffee cafe, but a community, stating on its website that the cafe is “just as much a part of the community as its people”.

As a testament to their community values, the coffee roaster The Catfe supports is one of the handful of roasters that engages in direct trade with underdeveloped communities. Customers are encouraged to purchase their coffee directly to help build the local community. With an emphasis on community purpose, locally roasted, specialty coffee and freshly baked treats, and of course, a cat play area, The Catfe is a place where you are always welcome. For more information, visit their website at thecatfeco.com.

ROAD TRIP: CUMBERLAND ISLAND

Maritime forests, ancient ruins and wild horses aren’t common features associated with the Peach State, though they exist for those who go searching. Searching where, you may ask? Nowhere other than the Cumberland Island National Seashore, a pristine and protected slice of oceanic paradise.

How the mystical band of horses came to live on the island remains a mystery. Most assume they arrived around the same time as the Spanish conquistadors of the 16th century. The case of the Cumberland Islands horses is unique because history proves that they were domesticated at one time but reverted back to their wild state with no help from island residents. Through the process, they adopted a unique set of skills like the ability to drink salt water instead of fresh.

As you explore the island, expect to encounter majestic sightings like a foal drinking its first sips of ocean water or a stallion stampede racing beside sand dunes. But you’ll discover much more than the iconic free-range horses on Cumberland Island. Wander one of the island’s hiking trails with boots on the ground, rent a bike to cover miles of sandy terrain in minutes or put in and paddle to get up close and personal with the

marine wildlife. As you zip across the island (via boat, bike or boot), don’t miss the crystal blue waters of the Atlantic, the shade provided by wispy oak trees, a glimpse of the Dungeness estate ruins and maybe even a wild hog sighting.

If you’re sold on a getaway to this otherworldly island, it’s time to start planning. For a truly immersive experience, stay on the island. Adventurous souls can camp out in the wild, while those who prefer the modern luxuries of home can book a room at the Greyfield Inn. Spots at both are limited and go fast, so plan far in advance. If you’re ok with a bit of travel time to and from the island, Amelia Island offers perfect proximity and pastimes (and two barrier islands for the price of one)! To access Cumberland Island, you must book a roundtrip ride on the St. Mary's Ferry ahead of time.

With extraordinary wildlife sightings, 17 miles of virtually untouched beach, mosscovered ruins and a tropical climate, a trip to Cumberland Island is unlike any other beach trip. A natural phenomenon lies just outside our door, waiting to be explored. So, answer the call and make Cumberland your next island escape.

LISA’S LIST

PET-FRIENDLY ADVENTURES

At Explore Gwinnett, we take our dogs (and begrudgingly, even a few cats) seriously. Too seriously. Few 10-person organizations can claim 32 dogs and cats of all shapes and sizes. Too many Monday morning conversations center on what we did with our pets over the weekend. Knowing where to go and what to do with our beloved pets while traveling is one of our team’s superpowers. With more than 40% of travelers planning to take at least one trip in the next year, we are fortunate Gwinnett is a great destination for dog families!

Our visitors often email and call asking for dog-friendly hotel recommendations, restaurants that welcome pets and, more than ever, festivals that allow or even celebrate pets. Packing the pooch for an upcoming trip? Here are our top pet-friendly Gwinnett County recommendations.

Hiking Trails – Nothing is more appealing to pets than a long hike full of new scents and smells, preferably ending in a splashy creek swim. Yellow River Park is easily our most recommended long-hike park for visiting pups. It is scenic, forested and buffeted by riverside hills that dogs will adore scampering up and down. The 3.2-mile trail ends at a stunning terraced waterfall.

Other recommendations:

Pinckneyville Park

Tribble Mill Park

Gwinnett Environmental + Heritage Center Trails

Take your Pooch on the Hooch – The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area meanders through Gwinnett’s western region. The river fills with tubers come May! Chattahoochee River Tubing invites pets (life jackets required) to join their owners in a float down the mighty Chattahoochee.

Chill on a Porch With a Beverage – Read on for a few of our favorite pet patios (visitors can find more on our website, exploregwinnett.org)!

If you and your furry friend head over to Norcross or Peachtree Corners, consider the patios at Iron Horse Tavern, Lazy Dog Restaurant and Bar, The Tavern at Medlock, Social Fox Brewing or Cultivation Brewing. Meanwhile, Lawrenceville’s Historic Square is full of pet-loving folks and patios like Universal Joint, Boulder Creek Coffee, Truck and Tap, Strange Taco Bar and Slow Pour Brewing, all known to roll out the pet-friendly red carpet.

Bustling Downtown Duluth’s dog-crazy destinations include Good Word Brewing, Local on North, Dreamland BBQ, Sweet Octopus and 6S Brewing. Head north to Suwanee or Sugar Hill, and dogs can find dining accommodations at Central City Tavern, Indio Brewing, Tequila Mama Taqueria, StillFire and Monkey Wrench Breweries, as well as patios and porches lining Town Center Park.

Furry friends can even shop till they drop, at least at Sugarloaf Mills’ Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, where dogs (on a leash) are welcome to browse the 150,000-square-foot superstore!

Gwinnett is home to over a dozen (many award-winning) dog parks. Rather than cooping them up in a hotel room, head out and explore these amazing parks. Our favorite recommendations include the City of Duluth’s Chattapoochee Dog Park, which features obstacle courses and multiple pet parks. For big dog owners, Pinckneyville Park is a first on our list for one reason: lots of hills, leaving pups tired and satisfied after a long day of play.

Rabbit Hill Park is designed with long runs, ideal for chasing tennis balls, while Suwanee’s Settles Bridge Park has agility features for talented pooches. Simpsonwood Park, on the banks of the Chattahoochee, features miles of woods, creeks and expansive fields.

On a final note, visitors and residents can find more pet-friendly fun and the best accommodations at exploregwinnett.org!
