Hey DiG Fam! Summer packed up its flip-flops, waved goodbye and handed the spotlight over to fall, the season where pumpkin spice gets a personality, leaves put on a color show and every creaky floorboard suddenly feels like it has a backstory. September and October in Gwinnett are bringing a little mystery, a little mischief and a whole lot of reasons to grab your favorite cozy hoodie and go exploring. Consider this your official invitation to chase chills, uncover hidden gems and embrace all things delightfully spooky.

First up, we’re raising a glass to the season with We Dig Spooky Pop-Up Bars (pg. 14), where cocktails come with a side of cobwebs and good times come dressed in disguise. These festive hangouts transform ordinary nights into full-blown Halloween experiences filled with themed drinks, creepy décor and enough spooky spirit to make even the ghosts jealous.

Next, we’re shining the City Spotlight (pg. 18) on Duluth, where international flavor, small-town charm and fall fun all share the same table. This vibrant city brings the perfect mix of historic downtown strolls, mouthwatering global cuisine, lively events at the Town Green and unforgettable entertainment at spots like Gas South Arena. But don’t just explore Duluth, interact with it. Get creative with our jack-o’-lantern activity and design your own pumpkin masterpiece. Carve out a spooky face, add a little personality or create the pumpkin that would win “Most Likely to Steal the Front Porch Spotlight.”

APPLE PICKING IN ELLIJAY By: Karon Warren

As the weather turns cool and the leaves change colors, many folks head to the North Georgia Mountains for fall fun. As the Apple Capital of Georgia, Ellijay welcomes many visitors coming to pick their own apples right in the orchards. A longtime resident of Ellijay, I’m often asked which apple house is the best. My response is always the same: What type of experience do you want? With eight orchards to choose from, you’ll find a variety of activities to enjoy during your visit.

For instance, at B.J. Reece Orchards, not only can you pick apples but you also can take a wagon ride, shoot an apple cannon or ride on a human hamster wheel. You can also take a pony ride, visit the petting farm or milk a cow. Inside the market, you’ll find fresh-baked fried pies and doughnuts, plus seasonal vegetables, canned goods and fresh apple cider. “[Picking apples is] a great thing to do in the fall,” said Rachel Reece, co-owner of B.J. Reece Orchards. “It really gets you into the fall spirit with all the fall vibes.”

Right up the road, Hillcrest Orchards also offers a wide selection of familyfriendly activities beyond apple picking. These include wagon rides, mini golf, swimming pig races, live music and clogging. With so much to offer, these two orchards attract very large crowds, so plan accordingly for your visit.

Several orchards offer u-pick events as well as some additional activities, but not as many as B.J. Reece Orchards and Hillcrest Orchards. At R & A Orchards, you can pick both apples and zinnias, take a wagon ride or ride a cow train. In the market you’ll find seasonal vegetables, canned goods, fried pies and ice cream. There’s also a cafe serving up hamburgers, sandwiches, homemade chicken and dumplings, Brunswick stew and more for lunch.

Fall is a wonderful time to visit, said Jennifer Futch, co-owner of R & A Orchards. “You can get outside and show your kids where the apples grow on trees,” she said.

Both Red Apple Barn and Aaron Family Orchards also offer activities beyond apple picking, such as u-pick flowers, wagon rides, petting farms and well-stocked markets. Of course, if you’re limited on time, you can grab a bag of apples at all of the apple houses and be on your way. Panorama Orchards & Farm Market, Mack Aaron’s Apple House and Penland Orchards & Farm Market all feature fresh-picked apples, baked goods, jams and more. These draw crowds as well, but typically not as large as those orchards with farm activities.

As you prepare to visit Ellijay to pick apples, check the website and social media pages for each apple house to see their hours of operation, daily activities and a list of apple varieties currently available. A great starting point to learn about Ellijay’s apple orchards is the Gilmer Chamber’s website. This is the best way to maximize your time in the Apple Capital of Georgia and ensure you take home all the delicious goodies you want.

Aromatic chai, apple pie cinnamon rolls, orange and cranberry jam, rosemary and honey served both savory and sweet — it must be autumn again.

Start your fall off with pumpkin spice and everything nice, whether you’re visiting your local coffee shop or making a mess at home while baking! I’m definitely doing the latter, so follow along with me as I take you through a couple of my favorite fall recipes.

SAVOR: Pan-fried chicken thighs, rosemary roasted sweet potatoes and crispy baked Brussels sprouts, topped with a sage pistachio pesto.

This dish is my partner and I’s go-to meal that stuns both us and our guests every time!

• For the pesto, I like to make Tieghan Gerard’s recipe in their book, Half Baked Harvest Cookbook: Recipes from my Barn in the Mountains. However, you can buy pesto at the grocery store if you want a more low effort meal. (My partner and I are just little culinary wizards!)

• Wash and cut sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts, arrange on a baking sheet and drizzle generously with olive oil (rosemary-infused olive oil adds a lot), salt and pepper. Let them bake at 425°F for 20-30 minutes, then remove and drizzle with honey.

• Season your chicken thighs, then place them into a pan (over medium heat) with hot oil (one with a high smoke point). Cook for 5 or so minutes on each side, then cook additionally until 165°F internally.

• Assemble your plate with the roasted veggies, crispy chicken and a big dollop of pesto and enjoy!

SWEET TOOTH: Mimi’s Homemade Fresh Apple Cake My grandmother has always been my biggest baking inspiration. Eating at her house in Blackshear every Thanksgiving felt like stepping into a baker’s paradise. Think red velvet cakes, Derby pies, Italian wedding cookies and classic chocolate chip — everything coming from that kitchen tasted like love!

This recipe, however, is my favorite: • Mix 1 ¼ cups of canola oil with 2 cups of sugar.

• Add 3 eggs, and then whisk in 1 cup of chopped pecans and 3 cups of diced apples (I find Gala apples to be really lovely in this cake).

• Combine 1 tsp. of salt, 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tsp. of baking soda and 2 tsp. of vanilla. Measure out cinnamon and nutmeg with your heart.

• Cook in a buttered bundt pan for 1 hour at 350°F. • Enjoy this deliciously simple sweet treat!

MAGNOLIA COTTAGE By: Anabel Kissel

If your dream brunch includes piping hot tea, finger sandwiches and homemade desserts, all served on fine china and a crisp white tablecloth, then you will adore Magnolia Cottage in Duluth. Their timeless decoration, attentive service and mouthwatering menu make them the perfect place for brunch dates, events and even a tea party! I stopped by with my mamaw for an early-afternoon tea service that simply blew us away.

From their wide selection of teas, we chose a sweet pomegranate and raspberry, which paired beautifully with the raisin scones, orange marmalade butter and berry compote waiting at our table. These scones were our favorite dish and a personal recipe of the chef, Daniel. Our tea service continued with a three-tier tray of refreshing sandwiches: creamy pimento with a refreshing cucumber crunch, pecan chicken salad between a flaky croissant, Southern egg salad sandwiches and a tangy broccoli pasta salad. I took advantage of the customizable tea bags and made a floral blend of rosebuds and hibiscus, while my mamaw sipped on a bold lemon ginger tea.

The second course was somehow even more delectable than the first, with three trays piled high with sweets prepared by the owner herself. A macaron that melts in your 10

mouth, a rich cheesecake bite topped with berry compote, a matcha cake glazed in white chocolate, each dessert was a small bite of heaven. We washed them down with cup after cup of tea — Chinese Pu’er, Secret Garden Herbal Mix, blue flower with dried lemon — we had ourselves a proper tea party!

Outside of their tea service, Magnolia Cottage has a delicious lunch menu. The perfectlycooked Herb Salmon Filet, served over a bed of Mediterranean couscous, brought tears to my eyes. Meanwhile, my mamaw couldn’t get enough of the Challah French Toast with cream, fresh strawberries and pistachios.

Every aspect of our dining experience felt personal, from our server, Alyssa’s tea recommendations and chatting with the chef about his scones, to desserts hand-selected and baked by the owner. This is a restaurant that truly puts love into every detail. Whether you’re looking for a charming venue for a bridal shower or a tea-time brunch with your grandmother, Magnolia Cottage will take good care of you!

SPOOKY COCKTAIL RECIPES By: Lee Bowden

Welcome thirsty witches and parched werewolves! It’s finally time to get into the Halloween spirit, and what better way to do that than with some boo-ze! This fall, we’re getting absolutely sheet-faced, which means spooky cocktails, terrifying garnishes and frighteningly delicious flavors are about to haunt your home bar!

Disclaimer: I’ve been told I make some killer cocktails, so consume at your own risk!

DAILY TASTINGS

First up, The Zombie: This classic rum cocktail is known for its high ABV and its blend of juices and tiki flavors, but I like to spice things up, so I added a few of my favorite fall spices!

Shake: • 2 ½ oz. High-proof rum • ½ oz. Allspice liqueur • 1 oz. Each of cranberry juice, lime juice and pineapple juice • ¾ oz. Passion fruit syrup • 2 Big dashes of Angostura bitters (for an intense red color and cinnamon bite) Garnish with your favorite spooky topping and a sprig of mint!

Grim & Tonic: This riff on a classic Gin & Tonic is herbal, refreshing and it's the color of ectoplasm!

Build in glass: • 2 oz. Basil-infused gin (My favorite is Tulsi Gin by Murrel’s Row!) • ½ oz. Tonic syrup • ¾ oz. Fresh basil syrup (I like to blanch my basil first, so that it keeps its bright green color. Then I blend it with a 2:1 simple syrup and strain out the leafy bits with a cheese cloth) • 3 oz. Sparkling water, top with lots of ice

Doctor Frankensour: Channeling the insanity of Dr. Victor Frankenstein and the innate genius of a 19th-century bartender whose name is lost to time, I created something. This cocktail is a play on the classic New York Sour, but it’s also an agave-inspired abomination of deliciously tart proportions.

Shake: • 1 ½ oz. Mezcal • ¾ oz. Boomsma Claerkampster Cloosterbitter— hilarious name, I know, but it’s delicious and bright green to boot! (Think Green Chartreuse but it’s not $90/bottle.)

• ¾ oz. Fresh lime juice • ½ oz. 2:1 Simple syrup • 2 Dashes cherry bitters Dump into your glass, leaving a little room at the top to float 1 ½ oz. of dry red wine. (This creates a nice bloody effect!)

Get Freaky: If you really want to pull out all the scary stops, dry shake an egg white in this bad boy to produce some spooky layers!

SPOOKY POP-UP BARS By: Chloe Rhoden

Halloween may only be one night a year, but personally I start decorating my house in September to enjoy the ambiance for as long as possible. But fear not, you won’t have to do all of that work too, for there are restaurants that take All Hallows Day as seriously as I do. Visit Gwinnett’s pop-up bars this fall to see what I mean!

Starting with Over the Top Burger Bar in Buford, bring your boo to enjoy some scary good burgers, a retro arcade lounge and moody lighting that breaks through the festive spider webs over the bar. Not to mention the droolworthy boozy milkshakes with an amount of toppings that can only be described as, well, over the top.

Rreal Tacos is perhaps the most ambitious of pop-up bars in Gwinnett.

Each location gets fully decorated for Halloween with a food and cocktail menu to match. My Prickly Pear Margarita with a black salt rim arrived in a smoke-filled treasure chest and my Halloween Birria Ramen came with black ramen noodles in a mouthwatering consomé broth. Every inch of the restaurant, from the bar to the bathrooms, was decorated to the max; not a single surface was spared from the Halloween takeover. So beware, dear reader, Rreal Tacos is no place for those easily spooked! Seriously, though, it’s definitely worth all of the hype. Did I mention their bartenders wear costumes every day to work during October?

Speaking of spirits, the bartenders over at Local Republic in Lawrenceville have curated a terrifyingly tempting Halloween craft cocktail list for the month of October. Featured drinks include the Grim and Tonic, a refreshing basil gin and tonic with a ghoulish green hue. The boulevardier riff, aptly named the Boolevardier, is a harmonious concoction of bourbon, fall spices and red vermouth for whiskey lovers like myself. Though whiskey has my heart, the Cold Brew Martini riff might be my favorite. It’s a luscious mix of vodka, cold brew and pumpkin spice with a cinnamon jack-o'-lantern image sitting atop the foam. It’s the perfect after-dinner cocktail to complement or even replace your dessert. I won’t spoil the rest of the menu for you; you’ll just have to come see for yourself!

DiGGIN' FOR GOOD: PAINT GWINNETT PINK By: Anabel Kissel

What would you like to see our cancer program accomplish in the next three to five years that we don’t currently offer?

Jennifer Griffin, a nurse and breast health navigator in Gwinnett, knew the answer to this question instantly. She and Bobbie Menneg, a breast cancer survivor and support group facilitator, have spent countless hours working together with cancer patients, seeing first-hand the hardships these women faced.

It was hospital bills, transportation, childcare and trying to keep hope, but they also saw the difference a small act of kindness—a meal or a supportive conversation—could make.

They knew if they gave their community the opportunity, they would show up for these patients, and Paint Gwinnett Pink was born.

Griffin and Menneg had two goals for Paint Gwinnett Pink. The first, to bring the community together—families, survivors, businesses, healthcare providers—to celebrate the survivors, mourn the lost and support breast cancer patients, walking alongside them through the hardest battle of their lives. The second goal was to raise funds to support local breast cancer patients. For the inaugural event, they set an ambitious goal of raising $25,000.

The first Paint Gwinnett Pink 5K far exceeded that goal, raising over $125,000. Since then, the event has raised $3.8 million, which has funded 3D tomosynthesis mammography technology for seven Northside Hospital breast imaging locations across Gwinnett, increasing the odds of early detection in local patients.

Griffin says that, “for [her] personally, the

greatest reward is knowing that this event has contributed to saving lives. Every woman whose breast cancer is detected earlier because of this technology represents the very reason we started Paint Gwinnett Pink. That's a legacy that extends far beyond a single event.”

Over the last eleven years, Paint Gwinnett Pink has become so much more than just a fundraiser or a 5K. It’s a movement of hope, a community choosing to stand together. It’s lives saved and it’s families honoring the ones they’ve lost. It’s celebrating every milestone, every completed treatment. Most of all, it’s breast cancer patients realizing they are not alone. That’s what Paint Gwinnett Pink is, and it’s all because Bobbie Menneg and Jennifer Griffin were willing to ask more of their community, and Gwinnett answered.

Play Dungeons & Dragons This original roleplaying fantasy game gives players the chance to explore mysterious dungeons, slay evil villains and cast magical spells. This session is an introductory one-shot, a short adventure players can complete in a single gaming session. Both new and experienced D&D players are welcome to join the table. Do you want to be a brave barbarian warrior, a powerful wizard or a stealthy assassin? New players can learn the rules as they go and experienced players can bring their own ready-made character.

D&D uses a system of multi-sided dice to determine the outcome of your character’s choices. Roll a 20-sided die to see if your attack hits an enemy or whether you can successfully lockpick a treasure chest.

But this isn’t just a game of swinging swords and casting fireballs.

You’re also working with your fellow players and the dungeon master to tell a story.

FINDING THE GHOSTS HAUNTING GWINNETT By: Laura Lyon Citizens of Gwinnett County often go about their day without thinking of what or who has gone on before them, and who may still be lingering among us. Halloween reminds us to explore the dark corners of our shared history and cultivate our morbid curiosities.

Despite being surrounded by streetlights and apartments, Duluth Church Cemetery somehow remains completely isolated after dark. This is the perfect backdrop for the Duluth Disembodied Dirge Ghost Tour, hosted year-round. The tour meets in front of the Gwinnett Public Library and follows a mile-long path through town, pausing to discuss apparitions and paranormal activity at landmarks like the Red Clay Music Foundry, a former Baptist church that became a Maple Street Biscuit Company and, of course, the Duluth Church Cemetery.

Tour guide Niamh West shared with me the story of John Victau Dowis, a sheriff's deputy who shot and killed two brothers during a Prohibition-era scuffle while searching their car for whiskey without a warrant. After being acquitted, he was killed in cold blood a year later. His killer was never found and the trail goes cold at Dowis’s grave in the Duluth Church Cemetery.

One town over at the Gwinnett Historic Courthouse in Lawrenceville, the Southern Girls Ghost Tour offers those interested in the macabre a chance to get in touch with them.

For two nights only, September 17-18, the ghost hunting crew comes to the courthouse with “thousands of dollars worth of investigative equipment”, according to founder Lesley Hyde.

Equipment available for participant use includes newer techniques like EMF detectors, since ghosts are historically thought to be made of electricity, REM-Pods, which measure ambient temperature changes and dowsing rods, which detect unseen energy. Older technology on hand includes a Victorian tipping table, where people gather around and wait for spirits to move or tap to communicate and a dead bell that can only ring by paranormal activity. Hunters will be able to explore all three floors of the courthouse, including the basement that is typically inaccessible to the public and was once used as a temporary jail cell.

After spending almost an hour searching cemetery plots alone well after sundown, jumping at the sound of each passing train, I can attest that the world is a lot less scary with a group. For bolder Halloween explorers, solo may be the way to go. There are historic cemeteries all over the county, such as the Lawrenceville Historic Cemetery right next to the courthouse and historic homes like the Wynne-Russell house in Lilburn that are said to be haunted. Whatever adventure you choose, Gwinnettians beware!

For decades, Phil Richerson has walked the grounds of Oakland Cemetery, drawn to the stories of the people buried there. Today, the Atlanta native shares those stories as a volunteer tour guide and as Victor Kriegshaber during the cemetery's annual Capturing the Spirit of Oakland event. We caught up with Richerson to talk about storytelling, spirits and the legacies we leave behind.

Q. What about history captivates you and what do you hope people take away from the stories you tell?

A. You learn so much from history. You learn how people dealt with various circumstances and about the decisions that affected their lives and legacies. Often I'll come across a story that relates to my life or someone I know, and it gives me guidance on what I should or shouldn't do. That's exactly what I hope the stories do for people: that they're able to find something in each story they can learn from and relate to.

Q. When you portray Victor Kriegshaber, how do you prepare?

A. I research everything that I can find, including old articles and anything that gives me insight into who that person was. Then I try to incorporate their personality into my presentation. What we do is definitely more storytelling. And I'll share a little secret: every year before the first night of the event, I go to the grave of whoever I'm portraying, tell them I'm going to do my best and hope they're happy with the way I tell their story.

Q. You’ve spent plenty of evenings in a cemetery telling ghostly stories. Be honest: do you spook easily?

A. I don’t spook easily and nothing at Oakland has ever startled me, but don’t get me wrong…I do believe there are spirits. Mayor Woodward may or may not have hit me in the butt with a stick once. But we’re not gonna tell that story.

Q. If someone has never visited before, what do you hope they experience?

A. I hope they realize that Oakland's historical influence reaches way beyond Atlanta. A lot of the people here and what they contributed in life were significant throughout the country and even the world. If they're on a tour, I hope they experience the knowledge of our volunteer team. All our volunteers tell these stories with so much passion. And I hope people appreciate the beauty! Our grounds teams and preservationists work tirelessly to make Oakland gorgeous for our guests. I think it's pretty beautiful after 176 years!

Q. What has spending so much time among these stories taught you about life?

A. That it doesn’t matter who you are or what your stature is in life. From the poorest person to the richest, from someone no one’s ever heard of to the most famous, we're all going to pass on. What really matters is what you leave behind, how you’re remembered and how your story is going to be told.

CANDY CHARCUTERIE FOR HALLOWEEN CONNOISSEURS By: Laura Lyon

A few years ago, I found myself living in a neighborhood where fall festivals with trunk-or-treating were preferred to the house-to-house trick-or-treating. After several Halloweens left me saddled with massive bowls of candy that would take forever to eat and adversely affect my fitness goals, I went to work on a concept that would be festive and tailored to my bite-sized holiday needs: a candy charcuterie.

The first iteration of the candy charcuterie involved chopping these candies into bites and arranging them on a plate. But why stop there?

A well-rounded candy charcuterie has a mix of flavors, including chocolate and fruit, with a range from sweet to sour. Now, my creative candy quest brings me to Downtown Duluth, which has two sweet spots steps away from each other on Main Street. I began at Rocket Fizz, a 1,600 square-foot shop featuring 2,500 varieties of wall-to-wall candy

from all over the world and across decades. Classics like Zots, Mary Janes and Goo Goo Clusters are stocked alongside global sweets like KitKats from Japan and Milka from Switzerland.

For those with a more refined interest in treats, the second leg of the journey involves a short walk to The Chocolaterie. Approximately 100 flavors of truffles, turtles and fudge line the pristine glass cases. One friendly face behind the counter recommended the Ruby Raspberry truffle, which was shaped like a gem and bright pink. For me, I couldn’t resist the boutique peanut butter cups.

After making the sugary haul, all that’s needed is a cutting board, a serrated kitchen knife and a small festive plate for arranging the bites. Pair it with your favorite witches brew and a classic horror film and you’ve got yourself a fully customized Halloween treat!

THRILLING ADVENTURES: TRICK OR THRIFT By: Chloe Rhoden

Your Halloween costume this year doesn’t have to come preassembled in a bag for over $60; instead, you can piece it together yourself for under $20! You probably already have some pieces in your closet and the rest are just waiting for you on the racks of the thrift store! Think pirates, vampires, witches and so on. Most of these iconic Halloween personas can be achieved through layering and finding the right staple piece. I went ahead and put together a few examples for you with some gems I found at Park Avenue thrift in Duluth!

For the pirate look, first and foremost, fill a flask with rum. Next, search for a vintage blouse of some kind and layer it with a vest! Add some baggy pants or a flowy skirt; bonus points if they’re tattered.

Accessorize with a belt or scarf tied around your waist and perhaps an eye patch. If you can’t find a pirate hat, then a bandana will work wickedly! It also doesn’t hurt to add some fishnets to your ensemble and a shabby pair of swashbuckler boots. Lastly, don’t forget the smudged eyeliner!

As for a vampire-inspired costume, a flowy blouse will work just as well, though an elegant bell-sleeve top or dress would be killer for this look. Keep an eye out for dark reds and deep purples at the thrift store as you piece together your mysterious and moody vampire outfit. Pair it with a corset or vest, vintage-looking jewelry, lacy gloves, a dreadful smoky eye and just a smidge of fake blood around your mouth to really sell it!

Hopefully this guide can help spark some morbid curiosity for your costume this Halloween, whatever the wicked occasion may be!

TOURING SAVANNAH, THE HAUNTED CITY By: Anabel Kissel

Plagued by outbreaks of yellow fever, Civil War battles and bloody crimes, Savannah, Georgia has earned a reputation as America’s most haunted city.

For centuries, that reputation has lured in ghost hunters hoping to experience otherworldly encounters. As a scaredy-cat, I have no desire for such an encounter, but I was coaxed into a ghost tour by the one thing no girl can turn down—her sister’s bachelorette party. So, I give you the honest testimonial of a cowardly bridesmaid turned temporary ghost hunter.

With our bellies full from dinner at Churchill’s and caramel apples at River Street Sweets, we climbed aboard Ghosts & Gravestones’ trolley in a blur of animal print and laughter. Cruising down the cobbled streets, we drank in the scenery—lights glittering off the river, towering gothic cathedrals and canopies of Spanish moss—as our guide, Maria, captivated us with thrilling anecdotes and historical accounts. Her words conjured visions of pirates creeping down dark passageways, a phantom feline darting through stone walls and the frantic rattle of a bell from a foggy graveyard.

Before our imagination could run wild, we arrived at our first stop, The Andrew Low House. Standing outside, Maria told the tale of the 1840s mansion, built over the ruins of an old jail and the Low family members who lived and died within it. We crept through the house searching for signs of lingering spirits, a whiff of perfume or a spindly silhouette in a mirror. To my relief, the only thing I observed was intricate 19th century furniture and a slight sense of unease as we explored the second floor, where docents often saw the ghost of Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouts. Sensing this specter didn’t come with a side of Samoas, I hurried back to the safety of the trolley, where our tour continued.

Passing shadowy cemeteries, bygone battlegrounds and eerie execution sites, our trolley made its way back to our second stop, Perkins and Son’s Ship Chandlery. I warily followed my sister into the dimly lit building, where she sat front and center on a wooden crate. I settled in next to her, waiting for Maria to tell us more about this abandoned warehouse. I won’t spoil what happened next, but I will share that I screamed out loud (twice) and strangled my poor cousin’s arm.

Our tour concluded and with our heads full of countless ghost stories, we stepped back into the land of the living. In the end, I was grateful my sister’s spooky taste brought us to Ghosts & Gravestones, whose knowledgeable and engaging staff made this tour the perfect way to see Savannah. Whether you’re a ghost hunter or scaredy-cat, like me, a trolley tour in America’s most haunted city is an autumn must-do! Who knows—perhaps you will encounter a few new friends just dying to meet you…

EXPLORE DECATUR CEMETERY 229 Bell St, Decatur, GA 30030 Located in Downtown Decatur, this local cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It encompasses 58 acres featuring beautiful greenspace and has been used as a filming location for various movies. This is a great place to take a scenic walk with your dog or friends to admire the grounds before grabbing a bite at one of Decatur’s foodie spots. Just keep in mind that it’s an active cemetery, so be respectful and clean up after your pup!

OAKLAND CEMETERY 374 M.L.K. Jr Dr SE, Atlanta, GA 30312 This is one of my all-time favorite cemeteries in Georgia! Known as Atlanta’s oldest public park, this cemetery spans 48 acres and is the final resting place of 70,000 residents, including the famous author Margaret Mitchell. My weekend go-to is grabbing a pastry across the street and picking a peaceful bench across from a mausoleum to spend the afternoon reading.

As a resident spooky writer for the DiG, I’ve visited pretty much every cemetery within Gwinnett and its surrounding area. In fact, I make it my mission when I travel to visit a local cemetery because I love decoding the symbolism on headstones and mausoleums. If you’d like to do the same, here are five cemeteries within 50 miles of Gwinnett to check out!

CROWLEY MAUSOLEUM 3624 Memorial Dr, Decatur, GA 30032 The Crowley Mausoleum is by far the most unique cemetery on this list as it’s located within a Walmart parking lot! James Crowley originally built a family cemetery on his land during the 1920s but after he passed, the area surrounding the cemetery was developed. While you can’t enter the mausoleum itself, you can walk over to the property to take a look at the 13 marked graves!

STONE MOUNTAIN CEMETERY 1025 Silver Hill Rd, Stone Mountain, GA 30087 Established in 1850, this historic cemetery is home to residents ranging from village settlers and granite cutters to farmers and townspeople.

It’s very walkable and open to the public! Another unique feature of this cemetery is that it was used as a filming location for Stranger Things, making it a great spot for fans of the show.

PLEASANT HILL CEMETERY Coordinates: 33.98610, -83.92580 If you’re looking for a cemetery that’s a bit off the beaten track, this is the place for you! My husband and I randomly discovered this spot while en route to a breakfast spot in Dacula. There isn’t an address listed but if you use the coordinates, it’ll take you there. One headstone that caught my interest is dedicated to Shirley Wootson Stanley, who was lost at sea aboard the U.S.S. Cyclops – another victim of the Bermuda Triangle!

AUTUMN ESCAPADE TO OKTOBERFEST By: Laura Lyon

Roughly an hour and a half outside of Gwinnett County, nestled in the heart of North Georgia, the quirky town of Helen with a Bavarian facade is opening its doors and tapping its kegs for Oktoberfest.

Now in its 56th year, the Helen Chamber of Commerce invites everyone of all ages to don their dirndls and lederhosen and join the festivities taking place at the Helen Festhalle Thursdays–Sundays from September 10–27, then nightly from October 1 through November 1. The official kickoff is Saturday, September 12, at 12:00 p.m. when the Oktoberfest Parade concludes with the tapping of the first keg at the Festhalle Biergarten. From there, it’s German food, booze and polka music all over town.

Personally, I love knackwurst and German potato salad, which is very different from American potato salad because it’s warm with a strong vinegar flavor.

Restaurants like The Heidelberg and Hofbrauhaus Restaurant have plenty of wursts on the menu. I’ve also never met a dessert I didn’t like, so you’ll find me on the hunt for Black Forest cake and apple strudel at the Hofer’s Bakery and Cafe.

There are plenty of ways to lodge if you want to make it a long weekend. Valhalla Resort Hotel and Uhuburg (Eagle Owl Castle) are two establishments that are in keeping with the fun, kitsch theme. There is no shortage of cabin rental companies like Cabin Rentals of Helen and Blue Creek Cabins. Additionally, campgrounds and RV parking are nearby.

As you arrive, please note that there is one road in and one road out as the Unicoi Turnpike becomes Main Street. An estimate from the chamber suggests upwards of 50,000 people will descend on this cozy mountain town with a population of less than a thousand people, so remember your breathing exercises as you navigate traffic.

If a trek out of town is not in the cards, some local offerings include Kurt’s Euro Bistro in Duluth and The Village Corner German Bakery just over the Gwinnett line in Stone Mountain. As they say to toast in German, “Prost!” to you, festivalgoers!

If you’re boo’d up this spooky season, get ready to soak up all of those cozy, pumpkin spice vibes with my curated fall itinerary around Gwinnett!

From savoring seasonal flavors to exploring leaf season’s premier outdoor activities, this itinerary has those Over the Garden Wall vibes we all know and love.

Start the day by heading over to Maple Street Biscuit Company for a delicious brunch. My favorite dish to order from here is The Farmer, a chicken biscuit sandwich filled with crispy bacon, gooey cheddar cheese and smothered with apple butter! It’s truly the perfect biscuit sandwich combination to enjoy on a brisk morning. Don’t forget to add a side of smashbrowns to complete your spread! After brunch, walk across Downtown Duluth to grab a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee (because it can’t be a fall date without a PSL). They also offer a special Spooky Latte once it’s closer to Halloween that features adorable marshmallow fluff ghosts and a Bloody Matcha! You and your boo can take your lattes to-go and walk across the street to the historic Duluth Church Cemetery. It’s the perfect spot for a mid-morning stroll with your ghoulfriend.

Once you’ve had time to admire the various headstones, grab your fang-tastic partner for a drive over to the Buford Corn Maze. This beloved family-owned attraction has it all from a pumpkin patch and corn maze to hayrides and a Haunted Forest! Pick out some pumpkins from the patch to carve into jack-o'-lanterns and some mini ones to decorate your home after enjoying all of the attractions. Once the witches broom hits the sky, it’s time to grab a spook-tastic dinner at Rreal Tacos in Lawrenceville or Sugar Hill! During this time of year, this trendy Mexican spot is transformed into a Halloween pop-up bar complete with incredible decor and a hauntinglydelicious menu. You can’t go wrong with the Halloween Birria Chicken tacos with a side of consomé (the blue corn taco shells had an eerie color).

DAHLONEGA WALKING TOURS By: Karon Warren

Fall in the North Georgia Mountains means a visit to Dahlonega, where you’ll find plenty of autumn-themed entertainment. I love walking around the square, taking in the colorful fall foliage, popping into shops and grabbing sweet treats like a caramel-dipped apple. But there’s another way to experience fall in this charming town: a walking tour.

With Dahlonega Walking Tours, you can choose from a historic tour or choose one of the many ghost tours that combine history with a bit of ghoulish fun. These tours dig into the people who lived in Dahlonega, so you’ll walk along the same streets and see where they lived and worked. “We're interweaving a lot of history because, to me, history and hauntings are hand in hand,” said Penny

Sharp, owner of Dahlonega Walking Tours. “You can't really have one without the other, and it's very interesting.”

Tour highlights include the historic courthouse (now the Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site), several historic homes and Mount Hope Cemetery. “We have a permit to go into Mount Hope Cemetery after dark, so it's sort of a capstone of our tour,” Sharp said. "Because it is an active cemetery, we’re very respectful of being in the cemetery, and we only tell real ghost stories in the cemetery that are documented in books and by people.”

Brews Pub Crawl that include stops at Dahlonega’s various tasting rooms, pubs and taverns. During the tour, you can sample a glass of wine or craft beer as you hear haunted tales of former (or current?) Dahlonega residents. “This being wine country, the wine tour is one of my favorites,” Sharp said. “It’s very relaxed and a lot of fun.” These tours also are great for those with limited mobility because you have the opportunity to sit a spell at each stop.

This fall, Sharp also is introducing a children’s ghost tour of the square that focuses on “sweet little ghost stories,” as she puts it. “What I love about it is that we’re teaching children history in a fun way,” she said. “We’re also taking in a lot of the buildings on the square that we

don’t normally have time to do because of our other tours. So it’s an opportunity to tell some of the sweeter, smaller stories.”

Sharing those stories is exactly what Sharp loves about her business. “Our job is to make you love [Dahlonega] even more and realize what an amazing history–and not just Georgia history, but American history–Dahlonega has.”

THE GEORGIA RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL FALL FLING By: Evan Crowther

Every year, people come from all over Georgia and surrounding states to Fairburn for a day of medieval fantasy fun. The fairgrounds sit quiet for most of the year, but during the Renaissance Festival, the space comes alive, transforming into the magical kingdom of Nottingham.

Attendees dress up in elaborate costumes and stroll the grounds to explore craft vendors, entertainment and games. With 14 different stages to visit, you can watch acts ranging from daring acrobats and fire jugglers to musical bards.

Perhaps the most thrilling entertainment at the festival is the joust, where knights take up lances and try to knock each other off their horses. Each weekend has a different theme, informing costumes and decor, like Hallowtide Lanterns and Yule Warmth.

The Georgia Renaissance Festival (known colloquially as “GARF”) takes place over several months in late spring. However, for the past two years, Nottingham has opened its doors from late October to early December for a Fall Fling! This year, Fall Fling is every Saturday from October 31 to December 5, plus Black Friday.

Beyond entertainment, festival guests have a variety of food vendors to choose from. Some of the fan favorites are the iconic smoked turkey legs, steak on a stake and beignets. There are also taverns and tea rooms where you can sit and take in the sights as you feast.

But what high fantasy revels would be complete without raising a glass? Drink vendors offer a selection of beer, wine, cider and mead. Monk’s Meadery, based in Atlanta, supplies the festival with its signature fizzy honey wine, a refreshing adult beverage fit for a king! You can even ask the tavernkeepers for a Bee Sting, a cup of mead with a shot of hard cider.

Looking for a more adult-oriented nighttime party? On four Fridays plus Thanksgiving Eve, the Fall Fling opens from dusk til midnight for GARF After Dark, a torchlit, 21+ celebration with live music, premium cocktails and hookah lounges. Tickets for Fall Fling have sold out in past years, so don’t wait if you plan to attend!

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: NORM’S HAUNTED MANOR By: Jay Ledbetter There are many fascinating cultural differences between you humans and us worms. I have had many debates with coworkers about topics of this nature, such as “Are apples food or shelter?”, “Does the phrase ‘down to earth’ hold any meaning?” and worst of all: “Why must the early bird get the worm?” One such discussion that always resurfaces in the DiG Manor this time of year is the matter of hauntings. Living in the ground, worms are constantly encountering specters and spirits of all sorts of creatures. It wasn’t until I began my column with the DiG that I heard the human term “haunted” for a place where ghosts can be found. So naturally, the DiG team had to do some digging to see whether or not our manor was one such place.

The DiG Manor was built in the early 1900s, when Lovick Martin and Mary Cornelia Hoyt moved from Buford to Lawrenceville. Martin had been mayor of Buford in his time there, and would go on to hold the same position in Lawrenceville in 1910 with a re-election in 1912. In addition to his community leadership, he owned the Allen Manufacturing Company, which produced horse collars, an essential tool at the time. He was active in the community, being a member of a social club called the Knights of Pythias.

Tragically, Mary passed away in the manor in 1913.

She was buried less than a mile away from home at Shadowlawn Cemetery. The DiG team did some investigating, and it seems Mary’s spirit still roams the manor, tending to the home she and her husband built over a century ago. I wasn’t able to fog up the bathroom mirror with my tiny breaths enough to write her a message, but I think this friendly ghost appreciates that her home is still being used to uplift the community.

What better way to kick off the season than with Brandi Carlile’s soaring folk melodies filling an arena? The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter has built her career on heartfelt lyrics and powerhouse performances. Add opening act The Head and the Heart, and you’ve got the perfect folksy soundtrack for the fall.

Break out the vintage concert tees. America’s band Grand Funk Railroad and their opening act The Smithereens are bringing decades of rock hits to Duluth’s 150th Anniversary Celebration: Off the Rails. Come early for carnival games, food trucks and festival fun, then settle in for a night packed with classic-rock nostalgia and crowd favorites.

October is the time for Halloween candy, and nobody knows candy quite like Marcy Playground.

This 90s alt-rock band is rolling into Sugar Hill for an evening of throwback vibes, familiar hooks and enough nostalgia to last through November.

Georgia native Brantley Gilbert brings his signature blend of country twang and Southern rock energy home to Gwinnett County.

Expect loud guitars, raised cups and plenty of chances to sing along to hits like “Bottoms Up.” Country fans won’t want to miss this homestyle party.

Looking for something different this Halloween? Skip the haunted houses and spend the evening with Alash, the internationally acclaimed ensemble known for traditional Tuvan throat singing.

If you ask us, there's no better time to explore Gwinnett than the fall. The temperatures finally start to cool down, the leaves begin to change and nearly every weekend brings a new reason to get outside. One of our favorite parts of the season?

Fall festivals. Wandering through rows of local vendors, hearing live music in the background and sharing festival foods with your favorite people are what make these events so memorable.

Maybe your treasured festival memory is finding the perfect pair of earrings handcrafted by a local artist, splitting a funnel cake with your partner or watching little ones experience carnival rides for the very first time. Whatever your favorite festival memory looks like, chances are it started with simply deciding to spend a Saturday exploring. If you’re looking for the perfect local festival to make some fun memories this fall, get ready for The 43rd Annual Duluth Fall Festival!

Returning to Historic Downtown Duluth on September 26–27, this award-winning tradition has been bringing people together for decades. With more than 375 arts, crafts, food and community booths, live entertainment, a Saturday morning parade, Kid's Korner and festival favorites, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Visitors can also kick off Sunday morning with the Duluth Donut Dash 5K Race before spending the day exploring downtown.

The Duluth Fall Festival is about more than entertainment. It’s about creating connections and strengthening community relationships. Even better, proceeds from the festival help beautify Historic Downtown Duluth and support local nonprofit organizations. Planning to attend? Parking near the festival is limited, so take advantage of the free shuttle service from Peachtree Ridge High School, Chattahoochee Elementary School or Duluth Middle School.

No matter where your fall adventures take you, this season is full of opportunities to discover new traditions, support local communities and create memories along the way.

MEET THE DRIVER BEHIND EL TORO LOCO By: Janet McCray

If you haven’t experienced the excitement and thrills of giant trucks competing, now is your chance! Monster Jam is coming to Gas South Arena September 12-13, 2026. Grab your family, friends and ear plugs to come ready for a day filled with entertainment and amazing monster truck feats!

In honor of the upcoming show, we talked with Armando Castro from Whittier, CA, driver of El Toro Loco to find out what it’s like to be a part of Monster Jam! Q. At what age did you decide you wanted to drive for Monster Jam? A. I knew at the age of about six years old. Crazy to say but that’s when I got to see Monster Jam for the very first time. I’ve wanted to pursue being a driver one day ever since. I debuted in 2017 and I’ve been competing for nine years.

Q. Why did you want to become a monster truck driver?

A. I fell in love with the truck, the tricks, the big air and most importantly, the connection the drivers had with the fans. From being able to meet them at Pit Party to getting to follow some of these drivers year after year to their driving style, I saw them as role models. I just loved that, and I wanted to be able to do it myself and give back to my fans one day. You can say I am living my dream.

Q. What training path did you take?

A. I went through Monster Jam University, where I was taught by the best of the best.

These machines aren’t easy to drive or maneuver. They tend to have a mind of their own sometimes, but that’s what makes it exciting — the unexpected moments, the jaw-dropping acts we get to do. I went through weeks and weeks of training and learned everything about driving.

Q. What has been your scariest moment as a driver?

A. I would say there’s been more nervous moments than scary moments. The stunt I just did for Monster Jam World Finals in Salt Lake City is one of them. I got the opportunity to jump over 5 El Toro Loco Monster Jam trucks. It was only scary because of the elevation, and not having much run up room to pick up speed played a factor. I wasn’t sure if I would clear the 5 trucks, and we just did by a hair.
