EATS TASTE TEST: A TASTE OF RESILIENCE

This fall, our Rejuvenate vs. Run Wild theme celebrates the moments that recharge us or make us feel alive—and no one embodies that spirit better than Gwinnett’s breast cancer survivors. Meet Melissa and Theresa, two fierce women who turned battles into bold chapters, proving that courage pairs perfectly with comfort food and a little indulgence.

Melissa

Q: Can you briefly share your cancer journey?

A: “I was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer last October. Chemo lasted 13 weeks, and I worked every day until my surgery. Now, I’m finishing five weeks of radiation. It’s been an emotional ride, but I’ve been blessed beyond measure.”

Q: Rejuvenate vs. Run Wild—what’s your moment?

A: “I relate more to rejuvenating. Every free moment, I try to recharge.”

Q: Favorite Gwinnett restaurant and go-to dish?

A: “Bahama Breeze—Cajun pasta all the way!”

Q: Comfort food that lifts your spirits?

A: “Queso dip—always.”

Theresa

Q: Can you briefly share your cancer journey?

A: “I found out last December. Thankfully, it was stage one. I had a lumpectomy and 20 rounds of radiation. Now, I take hormone blockers and focus on caring for my body differently.”

Q: Rejuvenate vs. Run Wild—what’s your moment?

A: “I felt rejuvenated realizing it was early and so many people were ready to support me.”

Q: Favorite Gwinnett restaurant and go-to dish?

A: “McCray’s Tavern in Downtown Lawrenceville. Black and Bleu burger with sweet potato fries!”

Q: Comfort food that lifts your spirits?

A: “Soup—any kind—it just warms you inside.”

Melissa and Theresa show that healing isn’t just about fighting—it’s about savoring joy, leaning on community and knowing when to rejuvenate or run wild. Their stories are proof that strength can be bold, soft and deliciously human all at once!

Picture this: You've just fallen back into that post-summer rut at your job. While it feels good to return to normalcy, life no longer feels limitless like it did under the summer sun. The self-care practices from before are too time-consuming and each week has become a blend of chores and routines that not even an evening glass of wine can fix. Have hope! The rut will not last, especially when you make the time to try something new!

Trying something new takes on a literal meaning when you attend a wine tasting at the award-winning Chateau Elan in Braselton. Promoting unique and artfully crafted wines, Chateau Elan offers three different tasting packages to help you escape your rut of responsibility. Whether you go for the Standard $55 package and spend four hours “discovering the history and passion that influences every sip” with a selection of seven different wines to sample from Chateau Elan’s extensive collection, or decide to let the sommeliers sweep you off your feet with four carefully selected wines and Chef’s tapas in the Premium package, Chateau Elan never disappoints on your day off.

As a bartender who also happens to be a huge nerd about all things booze, I would opt for Chateau Elan’s third tasting experience listed on their website; shorter than the other fourhour tastings, the Grandeur Tour and Tasting lasts two hours and is available for the fair price of $90. This package includes an in-depth tour of the many vineyards and wine production facilities spanning over Chateau Elan’s 3,500 acres, a private tasting of eight premium vintages selected by experienced winemakers, an artisan cheese plate for pairing purposes and

a wine education course. All those perks packed into a mere two hours make for one of the best nightcaps!

Not only is a wine tasting enriching for you, both with the breadth of history and luxury provided, but Chateau Elan enriches the very earth it cultivates. Chemical and pesticide-free, their grapes are treated with the utmost care by using methods of sustainable farming, my favorite being their employment of “beneficial insects” as a means of pest control, as well as their “earthcentered” approach of using compost teas to nourish the vines naturally.

Go ahead and treat your taste buds to some of Georgia’s finest wines, good grazing and great times at Chateau Elan. Create a new memory to end the rote rut of routine; rejuvenate that social spark and bring the whole group chat! Stay the night if you can and experience the masterful pairing that is Chateau Elan’s wine tasting packages and their acclaimed accommodations. Most importantly, raise a glass to doing what you love. Viva la vino!

GET A HOBBY: BUZZ INTO BEEKEEPING

Looking for a hobby that’s both an adrenaline rush and a chill-out session? Beekeeping might just be the perfect fit. It’s a wild ride — literally working with buzzing, sometimes feisty, wildlife — but it’s also a soothing escape full of surprising health benefits.

When you open a hive, your heart races with excitement. You’re stepping into the world of thousands of tiny, hardworking bees, most of them female — about 90% of the hive is made up of queen-led “girl power” worker bees who keep the colony thriving. It’s thrilling, hands-on and yes, a little daring. But beneath the buzz, there’s a calming rhythm. The gentle hum of the bees has been found to have almost meditative, healing effects, while the honey they produce packs a punch of natural health benefits — from soothing allergies to offering antioxidants and natural energy.

Right here in Sugar Hill, GA, the family-run apiary HP's Bees has been embracing this balance since 2020. Founded by Hunter and

family, HP's Bees began as a fun family adventure to connect their kids with nature and support local ecosystems. After months of research, they welcomed their first nuc of bees and have been hooked ever since. They’ve turned their passion into a community mission, sharing their honey, beeswax products and educational school programs to inspire others to take up this rewarding hobby.

Through tours and shadowing, HP's Bees teaches folks how to get started, showing that beekeeping is not only about heart-pumping excitement but also about reconnecting with nature’s healing power. So, whether you’re looking to run wild with your new buzzing buddies or simply rejuvenate by soaking in the soothing vibes of the soaps, honey and other products, beekeeping offers a little bit of both — and a whole lot of sweetness.

Ready to get buzzing? HP's Bees is your local gateway to the amazing world of bees, right here in Sugar Hill. For more information, visit www.hpsbees.com or follow @hpsbees on Instagram.

NEVER HAVE I EVER: TRIED SALT THERAPY

I first heard about salt therapy from my fellow yogi friend Lauren, who is a resident expert on all things healing for the mind and body. It's quickly becoming a popular trend amongst holistic followers as salt therapy is believed to help with inflammation, allergies, immunity and even acne. We decided to treat ourselves by booking a salt therapy session together at a local Gwinnett studio called Akasha Yoga & Salt!

Akasha Yoga & Salt is located in Suwanee and offers a variety of services, including yoga classes for adults and kids, salt therapy, sound therapy, infrared sauna and workshops. As soon as you walk into the studio, the calming and welcoming atmosphere greets you. They sell a variety of organic products and healing crystals that you can browse through before your session. For salt therapy, you can choose from a 45-minute session or an hour private yoga and salt therapy session. They also offer fun workshops that can be booked in advance, such as a group meditation class and sound therapy in the salt room.

We picked the group yoga workshop for our first time at the studio and it was such an incredible experience! After browsing their retail selection, you take your shoes off and place them in a holder before the room opens up for the session. Inside,

it’s floor to ceiling of Himalayan sea salt, casting a warm, soft glow. There were four of us in the class, along with the instructor, who gave us each a pillow and blanket to lie back on. While the room itself is covered with Himalayan salt, there’s also a built-in halogenerator which disperses tiny salt particles into the room, so as you do gentle stretching and yoga, you’re inhaling the salt.

The class itself was incredibly relaxing, especially at the end when the instructor placed a weighted eye mask onto our faces so we could silently meditate. We did some light stretching and gentle yoga poses, with a focus on being intentional with each movement. After the class ended, my friend and I both left feeling like every muscle in our bodies was completely relaxed. I’ve done a variety of yoga classes before but nothing compares to the feeling after doing yoga in a salt room. I came into the class without a lot of anxiety as well and afterwards, I felt like I could breathe deeply and all of my worries didn’t matter anymore.

If you’re looking to experience the healing properties of salt therapy, do yourself a favor and book a session at Akasha Yoga & Salt. Whether it's a one-on-one private class or you’re looking for a fun experience to do with a friend, salt therapy is the way to go. It’s a great way to get a little self-care in and experience something new!

EXPLORE

ROAD TRIP BILTMORE ESTATE

I am no stranger to the allure of Asheville, North Carolina. The award-winning food, the fun found on every corner, the wonder and beauty of Blue Ridge, it all draws me back again and again. Yet, I never knew that only seven minutes away from downtown Asheville, I would find the not-so-hidden gem of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We have all seen the commercials for this place; pastoral images of lush meadows and endless grounds unfold as a deep, tranquil voice speaks of the luxury and timelessness found only at America’s largest home, the Biltmore Estate. However, those commercials barely scrape the surface of what it means to experience the majesty that is Biltmore.

To give a bit of context, George Vanderbilt, the founding father of Biltmore, was born in 1862 into one of the richest families of the 19th century. In a rare move for someone so wealthy, he decided to put his money to good use. Enchanted by the beauty and the rejuvenating qualities of the Blue Ridge Mountains during his first visit to North Carolina, George Vanderbilt immediately purchased 125,000 acres of land as the setting for his new country home, the Biltmore Estate. Not only did he build a home for himself and his future family but George Vanderbilt also commissioned esteemed artists of his time to create a veritable castle with sprawling grounds and abundant gardens. After six years of craftsmanship, the 250-room French Renaissance-style chateau was complete, just in time to have the entire family visit for Christmas!

What began as a private family home sequestered in the serenity of Blue Ridge evolved gradually into a National Historic Landmark with endless amenities available to the public. From horseback tours of the grounds and vineyards and falconry lessons to on-site dining and bike tours followed by chocolate and wine tastings, Biltmore has everything a person needs to fulfill any vacation desire. There are also plenty of places to stay overnight at Biltmore (because you know one day is never enough). Whether you like the relaxed energy of the Village Hotel, the intimate vibe at The Inn on Biltmore Estate or like to sequester yourself away at the Cottages of Biltmore in your own “private oasis,” there are many options to choose from.

Unlike many companies lost in the corporate melange of moneymaking, Biltmore’s main goal is to treat its guests like family. Even today, the Estate remains under family ownership with George Vanderbilt’s greatgrandson, William Cecil Jr., the acting president and CEO of The Biltmore Company. Bill Cecil Jr. and the predecessors before him all aim to follow George Vanderbilt’s credo of conservation, both in quality of life and the quality of the nature around them. Cementing themselves as a pillar of relaxation, history, culture and conservation, the Biltmore Estate continues to impress us and our families with the refreshing warmth and hospitality they provide.

GIDDY UP & GETAWAY: HORSEBACK RIDING AT SOUTHERN CROSS RANCH

Ever since Beyoncé brought her Cowboy Carter tour to Atlanta, we haven’t taken our boots off. The hats and bandanas? Still in the rotation. The vibe? Western, bold and unapologetic. So, if you’ve been riding this Cowboy Carter high like we have, it’s time to take things from the group chat to the great outdoors. We’re talking horseback riding, wide open trails and a getaway that lets you live out your country dreams without giving up creature comforts.

Located just over an hour east of Atlanta, Southern Cross Ranch is Georgia’s premier guest ranch and horse farm. With more than 150 horses on the property, it's a standout destination for beginners and seasoned riders alike. The ranch specializes in allinclusive horseback riding vacations that make planning effortless, from meals and accommodations to daily guided rides. While you’re there, you can even learn about the ranch’s backstory: founded by a New York couple who fell in love with Arabian horses, the ranch has grown into a beloved retreat while staying true to its family-owned roots.

Booking is as simple as visiting their website and choosing a package that fits your vibe. Options range from the “Bed, Barn & Breakfast” ideal for shorter stays to the “All-Inclusive Riding Package,” which includes two horseback rides per day, three meals, snacks,

lodging and access to the ranch’s full lineup of amenities. Want something a little more custom to capture memories so they truly last a lifetime? Southern Cross even offers add-ons like private photography sessions, perfect for capturing those windswept trail moments.

What makes Southern Cross especially beginner-friendly is its personalized approach. Riders are matched with horses based on experience and comfort level, and you're free to roam scenic wooded trails and wide-open pastures at your own pace.

Not sure what to pack? The ranch takes out the guesswork with a handy tool on their site: just fill out a few quick details and you’ll get a customized packing list curated for your trip. It’s one of many personalized touches that help take the stress out of planning and let you focus on the fun.

Beyond the rides, Southern Cross offers peaceful porches, cozy fire pits, a game room, and even spa services. Meals are hearty, homemade, and often served family-style. Whether you’re looking for a solo reset, a unique date weekend or a way to unplug with family and friends, add Southern Cross Ranch to your fall bucket list. So, go ahead and book the vacation, grab your boots & bandana, and channel your inner Cowboy Carter. Beyoncé gave us the soundtrack—we’re just living the lifestyle.

WILD RIDES:

WHY

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A CAR PERSON TO LOVE PETIT LE MANS

There’s something about fall in Georgia that just hits different. Cooler weather, golden afternoons and a calendar full of festivals, football and all things spooky. If you’re looking for a unique activity to add to your list of pumpkin patches and hayrides this October, let us introduce you to one of North Georgia’s most underrated fall traditions: Motul Petit Le Mans. For 25 years, this iconic endurance race has taken place at the Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. Motul Petit Le Mans invites 140,000 people from across the globe to Braselton for a four-day event that combines world–class motorsports with the fall tailgate vibe we’re looking for.

Petit Le Mans (French for “Little Le Mans,” pronounced “luh-mahn” if you’re feeling fancy) is the season finale of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Just as the Kentucky Derby is a key event in horse racing’s Triple Crown, the Motul Petit Le Mans is a pivotal round of the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup. Now, before you say “I’m not a race car person,” hear us out. Even if you’ve never sat through a NASCAR lap, this isn’t just a race. And if you’re not a racing fan (yet), all you really need to know is this: it’s 10 hours of non-stop racing featuring some of the most elite sports cars, drivers and teams in the world. Saturday is the main event, but if you want the full experience, arrive early in the week (October 9 –12) to catch practice sessions, qualifying rounds and behind-thescenes action that puts you right in the middle of the motorsport magic.

If you love camping or have recently been wanting to camp at a festival, Road Atlanta offers several camping options, from tent setups to RVs. Waking up trackside? Kinda iconic & definitely instagrammable. If your ideal weekend is more “rosé and room service” than “cooler and camp chair,” Chateau Elan is just minutes away from the track. This luxurious resort and winery features European-style accommodations, a full-service spa and of course, wine tastings. There are also plenty of hotels and Airbnb stays in Braselton and the surrounding area if you're looking for something charming and convenient.

One of the best things about Motul Petit Le Mans? It’s more than just race day. The entire weekend is a vibe—and with so much to do in and around Braselton, you’d be doing yourself a disservice by only coming for a day. We recommend turning this into a weekend getaway. Spend your day at the track, then wind down with a wine tasting at Chateau Elan or dinner downtown.

We love that you can build your adventure here, whether it’s high-speed, slow-sipped or a little of both. If you're a motorsports mega-fan or just here for the adrenaline and ambiance, add Motul Petit Le Mans to your list of fall events this October. You don’t have to be a car person to fall in love with it…but we can’t promise this weekend won’t turn you into one.

NOT THE NoRm

PINK FOOD & DRINK IN GWINNETT

You surface folk have a saying: “you are what you eat”. For a worm like me, a healthy diet of dead plants, forgotten apples and neglected coffee grounds keeps me down to earth. If you don’t share my refined palate but still want a diet that will give you cheeks as rosy as mine, Gwinnett’s got you covered! Let’s explore some of the pleasingly pink provisions you can enjoy across the county.

Fresh fish is one of the prettiest things to put on a plate, with a wide variety of flavors, colors and presentations that are easy to find near you. Sushi leads the charge here, with so many pink hues found in fish like tuna, snapper and even octopus. Stäge Kitchen & Bar in Peachtree Corners offers an exploration of the sushi world via their chef-selected Nigiri Platter and sashimi. If you prefer your fish cooked, Local Station in Braselton has you covered with an Ahi Tuna Salad. The tuna keeps its beautiful pink color as it’s pan-seared and served over spring mix, carrots and tomatoes.

If you prefer something from the turf instead of the surf, there are still plenty of options for you! WEI in Buford has Steamed Chicken Dumplings that have both beautiful color and savory flavor. Of course, any steakhouse can give you a perfectly-cooked ribeye with a warm pink center, but why let the chef have all the fun? At Chubby Cattle Shabu in Duluth, you can cook Japanese A5 Wagyu your own way with their hot pot dining experience. This coveted cut of steak has a beautiful marbling, where the fat and meat meld together into a pink slice of heaven.

If you’d rather drink something pink, the options are limitless! Rreal Tacos in Lawrenceville has an eye-catching Dragonfruit Margarita with a slice of dragonfruit as a garnish. For a less sweet option, visit Escovitchez in Snellville, where you can enjoy a Guava Mojito.

There’s an entire rainbow of edible offerings out there for you to choose from. Next time you’re dining out in Gwinnett, pick a meal that’s just like me:

BREAST CANCER FACTS

3. Men can get breast cancer too — about 1 in every 100 breast cancer cases in the U.S. occurs in men.

4. 1 in 5 Black women with breast cancer are diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer, which is hardest to treat. This is higher than any other racial or ethnic group.

5. Early detection saves lives — Women who receive regular screenings for breast cancer have a 26% lower breast cancer mortality rate than women who do not receive screenings.

6. While most cases of breast cancer do occur in middle-aged or older women, a breast cancer diagnosis can happen at any age or any time.

PINK POWER STEPPING UP FOR A CURE

If you’re looking for a reason to lace up your sneakers and paint the town pink, look no further than the 10th annual Paint Gwinnett Pink 5K Walk/Run! Happening on Saturday, October 18, from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Gas South District, this event is all about celebrating the incredible balance of bravery and healing.

Here’s the scoop — this amazing event inspired our whole pink edition! Why? Because Paint Gwinnett Pink is about honoring the brave individuals who run wild — pounding the pavement, pushing limits and showing fierce determination — while also offering a powerful space to rejuvenate — embracing support, celebrating survivors and soaking up the healing power of community.

Paint Gwinnett Pink was born in 2016 thanks to two incredible women, Bobbie Menneg, a survivor herself, and Jennifer Griffin, the event director. They realized that fighting breast cancer isn’t just a physical battle — it’s emotional and wildly challenging. So, they created this event to uplift local warriors and rally Gwinnett County behind them.

Since then, the event has raised over $3.3 million to support cancer survivors and the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute right here in Gwinnett. This year’s goal? A bold $500,000 to keep providing cutting-edge care and vital resources to those who need it most.

So whether you’re sprinting to the finish line or taking a reflective stroll, your participation honors the bravery of survivors and reminds us all that healing comes in many forms — sometimes wild and bold, sometimes calm and restorative.

Ready to join the movement? Here’s how to get involved:

• Join the Race

Sign up to run or walk — solo or with a team! It’s a fun way to get moving and support a great cause.

• Be a Vendor or Sponsor

Show your love by setting up a booth or sponsoring the event. It’s a wonderful way to help and get your name out there.

• Make a Donation

Every little bit helps! Your donation supports local breast cancer survivors and their care.

• Volunteer Want to help out? Volunteers make the event run smoothly and have lots of fun doing it.
