Suwanee’s Art on a Limb is back this May and it’s turning everyday walks into a full-on treasure hunt era. Each day, two handcrafted art pieces are secretly hidden across the parks and trail system, just waiting for someone to stumble into a little “no way, I found it!” moment. Featured artist Ken Leach brings coastalinspired magic to the mix, turning recycled materials into ocean creatures and playful sculptures. Norcross is getting baa-rilliant on May 23 with Hiking With Goats at Pinckneyville Park Community Recreation Center. Hey DiG Fam! Summer didn’t just show up; it sprinted onto the field in wraparound shades and yelled: “Game on!” The energy is loud, the days are long and Gwinnett is running a full season of sunshine, sports and pure summer chaos. We’re talking splash pads doubling as cooldown zones, rec leagues turning into accidental rivalries and every sunset feeling like a victory lap. So yeah… you in?
First up, it’s snack break o’clock and nothing says summer like a hot dog situation done right. Check out In-Season Recipes (pg. 9) for a delicious glizzy lineup. We’re talking All-American classic, Chicago-style swagger, plant-based glow-up and a bratwurst that refuses to be ignored. It’s a full roster of game day greatness.
Then we roll into the Lilburn Spotlight (pg. 16), where summer basically hits repeat and never hits pause. Food Truck Tuesdays turn Lilburn City Park into a roaming snack stadium, splash pad energy is full and live music floats through the warm night air like it’s got nowhere else to be. Add in murals, park strolls and bites worth chasing down and it is a full-blown walkable highlight reel. EATS GRAB & GO: GAME DAY FUEL!

We all know and love the classic game day goodies: foot-long hot dogs, gooey nachos, a big beer in one hand and a chicken wing in the other, but these are all treats that you get at the big game. What about fuel before the game? I’m talking leafy greens, nutrient-rich bowls and healthy dishes that make those stadium burgers sit guilt-free in your stomach. Here are some much-needed healthy recommendations to start your game day off with a grand slam!
Açai is here and ready to play hard! High in antioxidants and packed with protein, açaí bowls have become the new obsession for people who want to keep active this summer. A typical bowl contains açaí berries blended with other fruits and milks, and is then topped with granola, coconut, peanut butter, fresh fruit, anything – the options are endless! My first choice for a tasty bowl is always Açai Express in Duluth. Their mission is to provide superfoods with lots of flavor. They use premium organic berries, which are good for cognition, heart health and aging, and they have plenty of options for different bowls, smoothies and natural juices. They’re fresh, sweet, light and look like dessert (and c’mon, isn’t that half the appeal right there?), but these açaí bowls are no joke when it comes to clean energy that will sustain you throughout even the toughest of games!
If you’re not in the mood for a bowl, visit Northside Nutrition for a meal replacement shake! There are two different categories of shake here: the Specialty shakes, which have protein packed in for those athletes on the go and Beauty shakes, which contain ingredients like biotin, vitamins and collagen, all to make you more radiant from within. Let’s call that a win, shall we?
What about the real food? I’m talking about the meat, veggies, brown rice and chicken that all the gym bros and health nuts need to keep it all lean and mean. Look no further than gusto!, a homegrown Georgia restaurant, started by former NFL and University of Georgia quarterback, Nate Hybl. This wrap and bowl bar began as a way to provide athletes with hearty, healthy options for fast food on the way to the big game. You can grab one of their pre-made protein bowls packed with rice, greens, meat and deliciously tangy sauces, or simply build your own bowl and make it perfectly personal for your dietary needs.

Now that baseball season has started, game days make me want a hot dog real bad. If anyone knows me, I'm a fiend for hot dogs and I'm just the right person to give YOU, my dear reader, the ultimate recipe guide for the perfect glizzy. Whether you prefer something classic or controversial in the dog world, there’s something in this flight for your taste buds.
First up, we have the All-American Classic Hot Dog. This is the traditional glizzy you see at your local BBQ, cookout or Fourth of July spread. You can top this classic dog with mustard, ketchup and relish. Anything else is a crime. I’m looking at you, Ashley, with your mayo. GET OUTTA HERE.
Second, we have our friends from up north and their Chicago-Style Hot Dog. This glorious glizzy features mustard, relish, chopped onions, tomato slices, a pickle spear and peppers with a kick! It’s traditionally served on a poppy seed bun. Basically, an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink-type glizzy. Next time your buddy from Chicago visits, thank them.
Up next, we have something for our veggie friends. The Plant-Based Hot Dog is a staple for those who don’t eat meat, but still want that delicious dog experience. Dress it up with some tasty roasted veggies, avocado and sauces for a vegetarian-friendly dish!
Lastly, we have the iconic Bratwurst, which some would say is the mother of all glizzies and the reason we have hot dogs today! Traditionally, brats are served with sauerkraut and spicy brown mustard on a soft roll or pretzel bun. But others simply love to just eat it plain as a sausage. Still another great option for those wanting a grilled glizzy experience.
No matter how you like your hot dogs or sausages, we can all agree on one thing: they are easy to eat and delicious. A perfect snack or meal for a ballgame, cookout at the park or summer tradition. Everyone LOVES a tasty hot dog.

TASTE TEST: AGAVERO PARKSIDE

Margaritas never go out of season, but they sure do taste best in the summer sun! As a part-time bartender and full-time foodie, eating and drinking are more than passions for me – it’s my livelihood. My focus today is Agavero Parkside, a vibrant and blossoming cantina with unique locations all around the Metro-Atlanta area!
Nestled in Old Town Lilburn, this spot is a classic Tex-Mex cantina with a twist. The restaurant, originally housed inside a double-decker bus with outdoor seating options, offers up all of the markers of a good restaurant: delicious food, fantastic drinks and quality service. They have all the classic cantina fare, chips served with salsa/guac/queso, street tacos with fresh cilantro and fragrant onions, beefy burritos and sloppy nacho bowls, but as you delve further into the menu, some oddities may catch your eye. I, as a self-proclaimed potato head, was immediately drawn to their Luchador Papas, AKA their fries and queso!
But, don’t stop there (I didn’t), because they also have something called The Walking Taco – a bag of nacho cheese Doritos, topped with ground beef or shredded chicken,
lettuce, cheese, sour cream and tomatoes. A perfect dish for all those cheesy chip lovers in your life! On my visit, I tried to make sure I could still walk by the time we were leaving the restaurant, so I opted for a healthy entree and ordered their vegetarian burrito. This, to my immense pleasure, was not the usual depressing veggie option with a meager smattering of refried beans and rice, but instead it was a gargantuan burrito packed with broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms and tomatoes, all of it slathered in cheese dip and served with a side of rice and beans. Hearty, healthy and packed with savory delights, this burrito was a fiber bomb of epic proportions!
The real star of the show, however, is their margaritas. Whether you’re grabbing the classic lime on the rocks, double-decker frozen or their seasonal infused margarita, there's no wrong choice when it comes to getting swirly this summer. Grab a refreshing marg or sangria, sit outside on their patio and people watch while downing churros and ice cream like it's going out of style – that’s my dream for you this summer (and my dream for me, if we’re being honest). Take the time out of your busy summer schedule to visit this quirky cantina, you won’t regret it!

With summer finally here, there’s no better time to start enjoying the little things in life that make you happy. For me, it’s drinking a delicious bottle of wine with my girlfriends as we debrief on everything that’s been going on in our lives. If you’re looking for the perfect spot to enjoy a glass or two or three (this is a judgment-free zone), The Bubbly Goat Wine Bar & Market needs to be on your radar.
Located in the heart of Old Town Lilburn, this family-owned establishment is known for its welcoming atmosphere, great pours and tasty selection of light bites. This is the type of place where an average girl's night out turns into something truly special. They have a good assortment of
red, white, rosé and sparkling wine to accommodate the palate of any wine drinker. If you’re not sure what to get, give their wine flight a try and select four pours from each category. Not much of a wine connoisseur? Their drink menu also features beer, house drinks like a tasty blood orange spritz and non-alcoholic options!

Whether you’re a former athlete or someone who loves the spirit of sport, there's an opportunity to re-capture that joy while making a profound difference. Volunteering with adaptive sports programs for adults and school-age athletes with intellectual and physical disabilities is an incredible experience for everyone involved. These organizations are always looking for enthusiastic individuals to lend their time, expertise and passion. And what may start as a commitment to coach a team or help at a one-day event often turns into long-lasting relationships with athletes of ALL Abilities. .
Gwinnett Masters Special Teams offers adult adaptive sports programming in Gwinnett for those with an intellectual or physical disabilities as a training ground for Special Olympic Georgia games. GMST is looking for coaches and sports enthusiasts in various sports! Coaches assist with practices and competitions. Knowledge of game and athletic skills instruction is required but experience with working with individuals with a disability isn’t. Available coaching opportunities include bowling, golf, bocce, swimming, volleyball, softball, flag football, basketball and walking.
Headquartered in Norcross, Special Olympics Georgia is a recognized International Olympic Committee entity that has been in operation for 56
years! They’ll be hosting an upcoming Summer Special Olympics Games that will take place from May 22-24, 2026, at Emory University. This unique event hosts over 1700 athletes in nine different athletic competitions from all over the state. If you’re looking for a one-day volunteering opportunity, this event is a great option! No Olympic activity would be complete without a ceremonial torch run! The Law Enforcement Torch Run involves more than 1,000 law enforcement officers from over 100 agencies who take part in a 1,000mile, two-week torch relay. The Torch Run culminates at the State Summer Games as officers enter the Opening Ceremony with the Olympic Torch – the Flame of Hope. The deadline to volunteer at this event is May 10th, 2026, with virtual training for specific roles and activities on May 14-15, 2026.
Another unique volunteering opportunity is with The Kool Kats bowling league. This league is for people with disabilities ages 16+ and operates out of Stars & Strikes in Buford. They currently have 72 bowlers and are looking for additional coaches to support the growing teams’ development. Summer in Lilburn is heating up in all the right ways. With fresh energy, community buzz and steady growth, the city is stepping confidently into its summer spotlight. Anchored by the always lively Lilburn City Park and the scenic Camp Creek Greenway Trail, this is where sunshine meets movement. Expect Splash Pad cooldowns, morning trail walks and mural-filled strolls that turn every corner into a photo op. Active, artsy and effortlessly cool.

Pull up hungry. Lilburn understood the assignment. Food Truck Tuesdays return on May 12 and June 9 and run on the second Tuesday of each month through October, turning Lilburn City Park into a rotating feast of street eats, live music and local pop ups. From there, keep the flavor going with a visit to Old Town, the go-to spot to refuel and relax. 1910 Public House brings elevated American classics, while Haven Bodega serves up coffee, baked goods and cozy café energy that just hits right. Every stop feels like one you want to stretch out just a little longer.

Lilburn’s arts scene is doing the absolute most this summer. Rock the Park on June 13 and September 12 transforms the bandshell into a live music playground, blending local talent and high-energy performances that keep the crowd moving. Then, Sparkle in the Park on July 4 lights up the night in bold reds, whites and blues, pairing fireworks with music and community celebration for a show that feels straight out of a movie.

Summers here stay active. The Summer Cornhole League kicks off on June 1, bringing Thursday night competition to Lilburn City Park, with space for both competitors or if you just want to sit back, watch the games and enjoy a cold one from the sidelines. Meanwhile, Days of Play in Gwinnett turns up the energy with free outdoor fun for families, from jump rope challenges to hula hoops and hands on games designed to get everyone moving. In Lilburn, summer is not just something you watch. It’s something you play in.

SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: YELLOW RIVER WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Calling all animal lovers in Gwinnett! If you’re looking for a family-friendly activity this summer that will get you up close to incredible wildlife, it’s time to head over to the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary for a visit. Located in Lilburn, this sanctuary provides a forever home to a variety of unreleasable wildlife and provides an exceptional educational experience for visitors of all ages to enjoy.
The sanctuary originally opened its doors in 1962 as the Yellow River Game Ranch, providing a home for injured and orphaned wildlife. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the ranch had to close in 2018, with the fate of the resident animals left to a dedicated group of volunteers. Locals Katy and Jonathan Ordway heard about the closing and reached out to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, which was in charge of re-homing the animals and the property and ultimately decided to purchase the property. Today, they’re joined by an exceptional crew of staff, keepers and volunteers who collaborate with the GDNR and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ensure they’re giving resident animals the best life possible! The property is now known as the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary and has seen a variety of upgrades to enclosures and programming.
I recommend carving out a few hours to spend at the sanctuary so you can take your time exploring all of the wildlife. You can either make a reservation online on their website or secure your tickets in person at one of the ticket windows. A cool add-on to your ticket that you can also purchase is a feed cup! It includes an assortment of carrots and lettuce in a souvenir cup that you can use to feed specific wildlife. There’s also gem mining and animal encounters available for an added layer of fun to your visit.
Once you’ve secured your map from the ticket area, it’s time to check out all of the adorable wildlife on the property, from gray wolves and black bears to fallow deer and so much more! Follow the trail that winds through the property and stop along the way to see each enclosure’s residents. If you have a feed cup, there will be specifically marked enclosures where you can give the animals their preferred choice of veggie! Each enclosure will also have a helpful label with information so you can learn more about the wildlife.
After you’ve seen all of the wildlife and made the most of your experience, don’t forget to pop into the gift shop! They have a wide selection of adorable merchandise from t-shirts and embroidered hats to plush animals and more. While your time at the sanctuary might be over, you’ll have a cute souvenir to remember the experience and time to plan your next visit!

Truth number one about America’s favorite pastime: sports are a unifying force. Whether you’re watching or playing, you’re present in that moment before the buzzer calls the game, feeling that same desire to win. You’re connected to those around you with everyone’s adrenaline skyrocketing, all while the clock ticks towards a hopeful victory. The only question that remains is, would you rather watch or play?
I, for one, am happily aligned with the spectator category. There’s nothing like knocking back a beer with your dad (or your buddies) and watching your favorite sports team reign supreme at the local dive. There’s camaraderie in supporting your team, fun memorabilia and, of course, the ability to experience all of the joys of strategizing your team’s win without the risk of getting any teeth knocked loose.
But, this isn’t a comparison of what’s better or worse! On the contrary, it’s extremely rewarding to spend the day doing what you love with the people you love. Win or lose, in playing sports, you get that same feeling of accomplishment that you do when the professionals win. There’s no denying that it’s fun to get involved; whether you’re playing in the big leagues or in your local cornhole tournament, you’re a piece of the bigger picture. Not to mention the benefits of staying active this summer, far outweigh the price of missing out.

Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation has plenty of options for both adults and youths looking to stay active. Slow Pour in Downtown Lawrenceville hosts local cornhole tournaments and if you’re looking for something more casual than that (if that’s even possible), Gwinnett County has experienced an explosion of trendy sports spots. Pick up your racquet at Pickle & Social and play pickleball with your pals or visit one of the many Top Golf locations near you for a chance to swing like the pros!

Today’s the day! The big game is in a few hours and if you’re anything like me, then you’re counting down the minutes until it all begins. It doesn’t have to be this way, though; instead of waiting around for the fun to come to you, follow my list of local game day favorite spots that will keep your spirits high and your eye on the ball before the action begins!
GEAR
No sports fan should go without some form of team memorabilia on game day. Whether you’re repping the team with a hat, shirt or simply planning on painting your entire body with their colors, Globall Sports in Lawrenceville is the place to visit for all of your sports merchandise needs. They have something for every kind of fan, from t-shirts and team tumblers to key chains and more. Stop by and deck yourself out this sports season at a fair price!
BEER
Now that you look the part, go show off your team’s colors at a local brewery. Fortunately for you and me, Gwinnett is flush with places to grab good beer! Slide on over to StillFire Brewing in Suwanee for a taste of their limited release, the Italian Stallion, a pizza dough pilsner. How unique! Wherever you land, be it Six Bridges Brewing Company in Johns Creek or at Goodword Brewing & Public House in Duluth, just know that breweries are the perfect place to unwind before, after and during the big game. Plus, most have TVs spread throughout so you don’t miss a thing. There’s truly nothing like cheering on your favorite team with an ice-cold brewski in hand!

Next on the list is fueling up because what game day is complete without a big platter of chicken wings that are just waiting to be annihilated (as your team annihilates the competition)? Stop by any of Gwinnett’s locally owned sports bars for a little taste of victory. McCray’s Tavern in Downtown Lawrenceville has the perfect rooftop bar and plenty of TVs to catch all the action, while Best Wing and Grill in Duluth has exactly what it advertises, some of the best wings in town, from garlic parmesan to Caribbean jerk!
Don’t just leave the fun on the field, take the kids out to the park for some time on the grass before or after the big game to practice your passes. It’s fun to watch the big game but it's even better to take part in a piece of the action this summer!

MAKE THE PLANS YOU’LL ACTUALLY REMEMBER WITH GAS SOUTH DISTRICT’S EVENTS
Gas South District is making it easier to turn “we should do something” into actual plans this season.
With Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and summer all coming up, now is a good time to start filling in the calendar. Whether it’s a night out, something fun with the family or just a last-minute plan close to home, there is a lot happening across the District over the next few months.
From big-name concerts to comedy shows and weekend events you can drop into, the lineup brings a little bit of everything to Duluth, all in one place.
If you are in the mood for a night that feels a little more special, there are some standout shows on the calendar. Josh Groban and Jennifer Hudson are both set to take the stage, bringing the kind of performances that make a night out feel like an occasion. These are the types of shows you plan ahead for, whether you are celebrating something or just want a great night of live music.
For something more relaxed, Bert Kreischer and John Crist are coming through with comedy shows that are easy, fun and perfect for a group or a casual night out.
There is also a strong mix of music coming through this season. Carín León and Palomazo Norteño are bringing high-energy shows that draw fans from all over, while Third Day offers a more nostalgic night for longtime listeners.
Not every plan has to be a big night out.
Over at the Gas South Convention Center, there are events that are easy to drop into and explore at your own pace. The Bellpoint Gem Shows is one of those where you can just walk through, look around and see what catches your eye. Momscape is another option, with a more family-focused feel and a good way to spend time together without overplanning it.
That mix is what makes Gas South District stand out. On any given week, you can catch a major concert, see a comedy show or spend a few hours at an event that is a little more low key. The Arena, Theater and Convention Center each bring something different, but it all sits in one place, which makes it easy to plan around.

Gwinnett, wheels up and we’re out. Summer’s calling, the tires are pumped and we’re heading north like we’ve got a date with cooler air and better vibes. The mission? Bikes, lakes, snacks and just enough chaos to call it a “sports wellness journey.”
First stop is Cleveland, where the temperature drops and the trail game pops off. The Yonah Preserve Trails are basically Georgia’s answer to “let’s touch grass, but make it athletic.” A smooth, machine-groomed singletrack winds through the woods as it knows it’s the main character. A few loops in, legs are burning, ego is thriving and suddenly, hydration feels spiritual.
Post-ride refuel mode activates at JumpinGoat Coffee, where caffeine meets Mt. Yonah views and local singer-songwriters casually soundtrack your recovery era. Then it’s Clyde’s Table & Tavern on the square because nothing says “athlete” like a brisket sandwich and a grilled salmon salad the size of your ambition.
Next up, Lake Chatuge. We roll into Hiawassee like we own a GoPro sponsorship deal and set up near Jackrabbit Mountain Campground
EXPLORE ROAD TRIP: BIKING ACROSS GEORGIA
Grab your bikes because apparently rest is a suggestion. White loop, blue loop, green loop, repeat until confidence and calories are equally depleted. The reward? A lake breeze that hits like a victory lap.
Somewhere between paddleboards, inflatable kayaks and a suspiciously tempting Aqua Tiki pontoon bar cruise, decisions start getting questionable in the best way. Do we hike? Paddle? Or just “strategically lounge”? The answer is yes.
Day two leans into full lake mode. Rentals, tours and enough water activity to make your fitness tracker confused and impressed. Evenings slide into rooftop cocktails, patio games and that “we should do this every weekend” energy that never actually sticks but feels very real at the time. And if there’s a day three in you, Phinizy Swamp down south brings it home with boardwalk trails, wildlife cameos and a final reminder that Georgia doesn’t miss when it comes to outdoor adventure.
Gwinnett, to the mountains and back again. Same legs, new stories, a little more grit than glory and a whole lot to come back for. That’s the ride.

DATE NIGHT: A COOL DAY AT THE GWINNETT FIELD

Deciding what to do in Gwinnett County can feel like a challenge. Every city is constantly buzzing with events and community gatherings. It almost leaves you asking, where do you even start? Luckily for me, that question answers itself - with baseball season in full swing! It was an easy call for my wife and I to see our favorite local team, the Gwinnett Stripers, at the Gwinnett Field
Everyone in Gwinnett knows the Stripers. Whether you’ve been to a game, attended a community event or just wanted to catch a glimpse of Chopper the Groundhog, a visit to the Gwinnett Field is always memorable. For us, it was the perfect excuse to reconnect and enjoy the start of baseball season together. With an early game finished, we had some time to spare afterwards and headed to The Exchange at Gwinnett
Just up the road from the field, we finished the day off right at The Exchange at Gwinnett, the perfect place where a group of energetic Gwinnettians can fully lean into their Saturday sports dreams. Known as Gwinnett County’s premier mixed-use destination, The Exchange offers no shortage of entertainment. Choosing what to do wasn’t easy;
with options like Topgolf, Andretti’s and Pickle & Social all calling our names. After some debate, we landed on a spot that delivered both energy and atmosphere — Pickle & Social.
This social game day destination is more than just a place to play; it’s a full experience. With indoor and outdoor pickleball courts, craft food and live entertainment, it strikes a great balance between competition and relaxation. Whether you’re there to win a match or just hang out with friends, there’s something for everyone. And the activities don’t stop at pickleball. We jumped into games around the ACL Yard, where they offered cornhole, ping pong and more. After a couple of hours of high-energy fun, it was time to wrap up the day up and call it a success.
From friendly competition to hometown baseball, it all came together for a perfect day in Gwinnett. Another reminder that some of the best days to have are right here in our own backyard.

THE BOMB ATLANTA

If you’re looking for something completely different, Beat The Bomb Atlanta is hands-down one of the most unique group experiences I’ve ever done. I went with a group of couples and from the moment we stepped inside, it felt like we were dropped into a real-life video game. Each room challenges your team with a different task, everything from navigating through a room of lasers to problem-solving, all against the clock. We didn’t quite “beat the bomb,” but honestly, getting blasted with paint at the end alongside our friends might’ve been the highlight.
PUTTSHACK ATLANTA

For something a little more laid-back but still competitive, Puttshack Atlanta puts a modern spin on mini golf. We went on a staff outing and it was the perfect balance between casual and competitive. The tech does the scorekeeping for you, tracking each shot digitally. Each course has its own creative twists and the food and drinks definitely elevate it beyond your typical mini golf night.
ATLANTA MOTORSPORTS PARK
20 Duck Thurmond Rd, Dawsonville, GA
If your idea of competition leans more adrenaline-fueled, Atlanta Motorsports Park is calling your name. We visited for a birthday and jumped into a race with friends and let me tell you, it’s the closest I’ve ever felt to being a real racecar driver. And if someone in your group would rather spectate than race, there’s a bar and restaurant with a porch overlooking the track, making it just as fun to watch the action from above. Be sure to reserve your time in advance and show up at least 30 minutes early for your race time.

There’s just something about a little friendly competition that brings people together and if I’m being honest, I’m a lover of all things competition. Whether it’s a full-on race to the finish or a lighthearted game that turns unexpectedly intense, I’m always in. Luckily, you don’t have to go far from Gwinnett to find places that turn fun into a full-on scoreboard moment. Within 50 miles of the city, these 5 spots deliver the perfect mix of games, energy and just enough rivalry to keep things interesting — dare we say, even a heated rivalry.
THE PAINTED PICKLE

As someone who already loves pickleball, this was an easy favorite. We went for their neon late-night pickleball, where the lights go down, the paddles and balls glow and the music turns up. It felt like part competition, part dance party and somehow, we were still fully invested in winning. Beyond the courts, there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained, from ping pong to darts, plus great food and even live music on the night we visited. It’s the kind of place where you show up for one game and end up staying for hours.
FLIGHT CLUB ATLANTA

And then there’s Flight Club Atlanta, still on my personal list, but already highly recommended by just about everyone I know. This upscale social darts concept combines classic gameplay with interactive scoring, great food and a lively atmosphere. If it’s anything like the others on this list, it’s safe to say it’ll bring out your competitive side in the best way.
Whether you’re planning a date night, a group outing or just looking to shake up your usual plans, these spots prove that a little competition goes a long way. Scoreboard optional but bragging rights? Always included.

DAY TRIP: ATLANTA’S LEGACY OF HOSTING THE WORLD CUP

As Atlanta prepares to welcome the world for the FIFA World Cup 2026, we’re reminiscing on a summer nearly 30 years ago when the city stepped onto the global stage for the 1996 Olympic and Paralympic Games. What began as two weeks of competition became something much bigger, a blueprint for the international events Atlanta continues to attract today, with an Olympic legacy that still shapes the city in ways both visible and unexpected.
In the heart of downtown, the story of the city’s Olympic legacy begins at Centennial Olympic Park. Once an underutilized stretch of downtown, this 22-acre green space was built by the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games as part of the infrastructure improvements for the 1996 Summer Olympics. For me, it’s also where my own connection to Atlanta began. I’m originally from North Carolina and the first time I ever visited the city was nearly 15 years ago for the Big South Volleyball Tournament. I remember standing in Centennial Olympic Park, taking in the vast green space framed by high-rises and attractions and thinking to myself, one day, I want to live here. There was something about the energy that just stuck.
On the sidewalks and walkways, you can see the footprints of Olympians. Engraved bricks have the names of the donors and Olympic athletes who supported the park’s construction. They carry names, messages and memories from people who wanted to be part of something bigger. The park also holds space for a more solemn chapter and serves as a symbol of unity and healing. After the tragic bombing during the 1996 Olympics, the park became a place of remembrance and resilience. To this day, it continues to host concerts and community events. It’s a testament to Atlanta’s ability to come together, heal and move forward without forgetting.
Today, Centennial Olympic Park is surrounded by Atlanta’s most popular attractions, including SkyView Atlanta, Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola and National Center for Civil and Human Rights. The park has become a go-to gathering place and central hub for experiencing the city. For a deeper dive, head to the Atlanta History Center, where exhibits tell the story of how the games came into focus not
just as a global event, but as a defining turning point that propelled Atlanta onto the world stage. It includes memorabilia from athletes and fans, archival materials, vintage video footage and interactive activities.
That influence shows up in more unexpected places, too, like the racks of vintage shops in Little Five Points In true millennial fashion, there has been a resurgence of 90s-era Atlanta Olympic apparel: windbreakers, pins, graphic tees and starter jackets that feel both nostalgic and newly relevant. Shops like Rag-O-Rama and The Clothing Warehouse have seen renewed interest in these pieces, with visitors and locals alike hunting for a piece of Atlanta history.
Atlanta’s Olympic legacy lives on in the rhythm of downtown, in the stories etched into brick and memory and in the way the city continues to show up on the world stage. You can feel it in Centennial Olympic Park, see it at the Atlanta History Center and even spot it in the vintage racks of Little Five Points. Atlanta’s Olympic spirit didn’t end in 1996. It’s still evolving and welcoming the world.

DUGOUT DRAMA: GROUNDHOG VS. Worm

As we discussed in my last feature, I have dug deep into Gwinnett during my time with the DiG, quickly becoming the face of our little operation here. It's not official or anything, but people often refer to me as “Gwinnett’s Mascot,” which is very kind. I would never say something like that about myself, of course; I’m far too down-to-earth for that kind of thing. However, there have always been rumblings in the earth of another creature digging into our county – a groundhog named Chopper.
Chopper works as the mascot for the Gwinnett Stripers, the county’s baseball team and Triple-A affiliate team for the Atlanta Braves. At first glance, I was happy to see another burrowing critter tunneling its own path to success but it turns out that was false. According to the Stripers Entertainment Team, Chopper is a descendant of General Beauregard Lee, a famed predictor of weather in the state of Georgia. That's right, Chopper is a nepo-baby.
He used his family’s acclaim to push his personal brand over the little guys, like me. This revelation should have many Chopper fans asking themselves one key question: “How much ground can a groundhog hog?”
Unfortunately, despite my discovery of this breaking news, there remains a fact that haunts me more than the aforementioned question: Chopper is, against all odds, a great mascot. I went to a Stripers game and found myself enraptured by his innate charisma. His antics and crowd work rivals that of the most successful comedians of the modern era. I found myself smiling as he jogged out onto the field, hoping deep in my heart that he might visit my section of the stands so I could hand him a formal written apology. To keep with the theme of this issue, I must summarize my new dynamic with Chopper in three simple words:
“Game recognizes game.”

WE DiG: WATCH PARTIES

Georgia is inviting the world to watch this summer! That’s right, Atlanta is the city to be in for all soccer fans this year and I’m here to make sure you miss none of the action! If you can’t make it to the stadium this year, fret not, there are plenty of watch parties happening all around you!
This year, the tournament spans from June 11-19 and Explore Gwinnett is hosting four confirmed watch parties. These parties will be more than just a nice room with a big screen and surround sound because Explore Gwinnett wants to take this chance to highlight Gwinnett’s rich culture, diversity and hospitality for travelers and locals alike. Expect good vibes, local food vendors and food trucks, as well as quality drinks, because Georgia doesn’t mess around when it comes to a shindig!
Even if you can’t make it to the pitch — be it prices, timing or the commute - you can probably make it to Gwinnett Field (formerly known as Coolray Field) on June 15 for their first official watch party. Or, if the 15th is a no-go for you, slide over to the City of Suwanee on June 27 to see where the chips have fallen after the game is over. Hopefully, your team is victorious! The other two watch parties take place in July; the City of Peachtree Corners is inviting all to see all the juiciest clips and best plays on July 7 and the City of Norcross aims to end things with a bang on July 15! Stay tuned to find out where and when these parties are taking place by visiting Explore Gwinnett’s website.
You can also host your own watch party this year! Many event venues are opening their doors to both corporate and personal parties, like District Atlanta. If you’re a true party animal, you’ll fit right in here. Hop off the couch this summer and score a spot at one of the biggest parties of the year!
