The Hickory Crawdads are a Class A Affiliate of the Texas Rangers and can be seen during home games in Hickory at the L.P. Frans Stadium. For those who aren’t local to the area, crawdads or crayfish can be found in the waterways around Hickory which was the inspiration for the team’s name as many residents grew up catching these tiny crustaceans. The homage to the residents of Hickory will be further seen in the team’s new alternative identity as the Hickory Goat-Karts which will take the field in 2025. Hickory has a long history of wagon-making with the Piedmont Wagon Company which made recognizable dark green wagons with red wheels and yellow trim in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both the colors and nod to the iconic wagons will be seen on the team’s jerseys. The company also made a model for children who were pulled by goats hence the name “Goat-Karts” for the team. As an additional fun element, the team’s goat can be seen with racing goggles to tie in Hickory’s legacy to the racing industry. The Hickory Crawdads are a community staple and offer a fun night for all ages at the ballpark. Catch a game from April to August!

The Crawdads have called Hickory home since 1993, moving from Gastonia where they played as the Gastonia Rangers.

Over 700 names were submitted in the name the team contest. The submissions were whittled down to a final five: the Hounds, River Cats, Valley Cats, Woodchucks, and Crawdads. Ultimately, the Crawdads name stuck as many locals grew up catching the critters in nearby creeks. Crawdads are also more active at night, fitting for a team that would play most games under the lights of newly constructed LP Frans Stadium. Contests were also held to name the team mascot Conrad and his long-time love interest, Candy. Conrad and Candy were married in an on-field ceremony during the 2018 season which was the first mascot wedding in Minor League Baseball.

During this era of the theater, it consisted of a series of radio dramas that were aired on WIRC. Soon after, the formation of the Hickory Little Theatre came to life. In 1976, the City of Hickory decided to build a larger and updated City Hall giving the theatre group the opportunity to expand their productions with a permanent residence at the previous “City Hall.” Today, you are welcomed by the beautiful original columns of the old City Hall building and quickly pulled into the beauty of the performance space. The Hickory Community Theatre is home to the Fireman’s Kitchen and the Charles E. Jeffers Theater (main stage) which was named in honor of the artistic director who joined the group in 1988. Each season new performances and shows for all ages! Protip: if you’re visiting around Halloween, the Hickory Community is home to the annual showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show with props and more! It’s a riot!

The Green Room Community Theatre

Established back in 1987, this historic theatre’s purpose has always been to bring a love of live theatre to the community. Production started with just two shows per season but with much success and vision, The Green Room Community Theatre acquired the old Newton Post Office building located on the Historic Courthouse Square in Newton. After renovations and an expansion of the facility, The Community Theatre opened the doors to its new home in 2010. The Old Post Office Playhouse now provides a truly unique and historic setting for the theatre’s shows. They offer 12 unique productions per year held on the Main Stage and in the Black Box Theatre. Check out their website for the full production schedule so you can stay up to date with the show dates during each season.

BEN SULLIVAN

Culinary Director at Cranford Hospitality

Q. What makes Hickory’s dining scene stand out?

A. Hickory is in a moment of growth where we are seeing an influx of new styles of restaurants and cuisines that are enriching the culinary scene.

Q. Can you describe one of the most popular dishes at your restaurant and the inspiration behind it?

A. At Cranford Brother’s Barbecue it has to be our smashburger, made from our brisket trim and rendered beef fat. It’s a traditional Okie smashburger with tons of pickled onion and cheese smashed into the two patties served with our house burger sauces and pickles.

Q. If you were to recommend a restaurant in Hickory besides your own to go to for lunch, what would it be?

A. Sundays at Tacos El Tio Chetos are a secret gem of Hickory, they specialize in lamb barbacoa and consomme soup made from the drippings of the lamb and top it off with live Mariachi bands.

JON BROWN

Q. How does Hickory’s location affect the type of drinks that are created?

A. With our location being in the foothills/piedmont area between Charlotte and the mountains, we are able to explore flavors and styles from old to new. Most people don’t realize that North Carolina’s climate is perfect for growing traditional asian ingredients such as wasabi and ginger. We use that to our advantage when creating our menu.

Q. Can you describe the most popular drink that people order at your work and your opinion of why it’s so popular?

A. That would be between our lemongrass mojito or our Japanese Old Fashioned. Our Japanese Old Fashioned is unique in the sense that our housemade ginger syrup is in place of traditional sugar cubes or simple syrup, which is a unique twist on a classic. Our lemon grass mojito is a crowd favorite. A new take on a refreshing beverage that’s brightened up by the combination of citrus and floral notes for a sweet, tangy drink that leaves you wanting more.

Q. What’s your go-to drink order that you would recommend to visitors who are new to Hickory?

A. I always go to the Lychee Death Note. Named after a classic anime, it’s our most fun drink that uses citrus and butterfly pea flower infused gin that not only changes color like magic, but is straight to the point with four ingredients: gin, lychee, lime and simple. It’s always fun to see the nostalgia and child-like wonder of adults’ faces when garnishing it with our flavor bubble, for that extra razzle dazzle!

MEHGAN BRUNTY

Bar Manager at No Entry, A Cocktail Bar and City Walk Distilling

Q. How does Hickory’s location influence the type of drinks that are created?

CLINT STROHMAN

Special Events Director at Cranford Hospitality

Q. How does Hickory’s location affect the type of drinks that are created?

A. The unique location of the Catawba Valley and the overall culture of beer has affected Hickory’s overall feel. Unique creations can be found at some bars and restaurants as well. A listening room with unique cocktails and local brews would be a fun addition.

Q. Can you describe the most popular drink that people order at your work and your opinion of why it’s so popular?

A. I would say the most popular drink ordered at City Walk Brewing is going to fall under the IPA category and likely be the Fallen Arches; with notes of citrus and dank pine, this 6.7% West Coast Style IPA is sure to quench the thirst of any beer enthusiast. Over at Standard Oyster Company, the smoked old fashioned is an amazing add-on to any seafood dish.

Q. What’s your go-to drink order that you would recommend to visitors who are new to Hickory?

A. I love a HUGE margarita from Las Isabelas located in downtown Hickory, also enjoying a cold beer sitting outside of the Wine Shoppe.

A. Hickory’s community has always embraced the NC craft beverage scene, from local breweries to our very own distillery, City Walk. It’s not uncommon to see locally crafted spirits taking center stage on cocktail menus across town. Positioned between the bustling hubs of Charlotte and Asheville, Hickory strikes a perfect balance, blending trendy “big-city” cocktail culture with an approachable, small-town charm. Nestled in the picturesque foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, we also take pride in supporting local farms, incorporating fresh, seasonal ingredients into our beverages to create drinks infused with Southern elegance and flavor.

Q. Can you describe the most popular drink people order at your work and why you think it’s so popular?

A. Espresso martinis reign supreme! Thanks to the rise of coffee culture and the irresistible allure of Instagramworthy moments, these bold, dark and frothy creations in their elegant coupe glasses have become a true classic, especially popular among guests who are new to cocktails,

offering an indulgent and sophisticated experience without straying into overly complicated or experimental territory.

For those looking to mix things up, we offer a tiki espresso martini—a playful twist featuring rum and pineapple juice. And if you’re feeling adventurous, our “pantry” of housemade bitters, syrups, tinctures, infused spirits and even non-alcoholic options provides endless opportunities for experimentation.

Q. What’s your go-to drink recommendation for visitors who are new to Hickory?

A. That’s a tough one, but I’d have to suggest Engine #3 and Pontoon Party.

At No Entry, our “Engine” series of smoked cocktails pays tribute to our neighbors at Hickory Fire Station #1. Engine #3, a standout in the series, is a signature smoked old fashioned featuring City Walk Bourbon, tobacco bitters, a hint of orange peel and a Bordeaux cherry for a rich, layered flavor experience.

For beer lovers, the Pontoon Party from City Walk Brewery is a must-try. As part of the “Social District” in downtown Hickory, visitors can enjoy this flagship brew while strolling along the City Walk, taking in the vibrant charm and character of downtown.

FRED JULIUS

Chef at Cowa-Saké

Q. What makes Hickory’s dining scene stand out?

A. Hickory’s geographic location between the metropolitan area of Charlotte and Asheville makes it an ideal hub for influences and talent coming from both areas. Combined with the fact that this area is under massive development, the Hickory food scene is well diversified and upcoming in both cuisine style and current trends. The chefs in the local community are always collaborating with each other forming an environment that promotes creation, passion and elevation on their menus and overall dining experience.

Q. Can you describe one of the most popular dishes at your restaurant and your inspiration behind it?

A. At Cowa-Saké, one of our most popular ordered items is our weekly Chef’s Roll Feature. The inspiration behind it really is the entire team’s collaboration and engagement. We work together all week prior to presenting the dish while communicating with all of our vendors sourcing some of the best global ingredients that are in season. It’s a rewarding challenge for our chefs to be creative and really bring all of our training, technique and product knowledge to the table on a weekly basis. It’s always a blast for the entire staff to showcase our standards.

Q. If you were to recommend a restaurant in Hickory besides your own to go to for lunch, what would it be?

A. Outside of our sister restaurants in the area, I really enjoy fast-casual food on my day off like Hong Kong Cafe or Hatch Sandwich Bar.
