raselton is home to so much history. Our streets are lined with monuments to days gone by, through public art and architecture, through preservation and reinvention. Our events draw crowds from across Georgia and beyond, inviting folks to gather for shopping, dancing, dining and more. We entice wine and antique lovers to sip and shop their way through town, and we are home to beautiful parks and attractions for those wanting a little heart-pumping fun. Braselton is a destination, even for those of us who already live here. And no destination is complete without an exciting and enticing food scene.

Food is an anchor that tethers us to our lives, heritage and collective journeys as humans. Bowls filled with steaming stew on a stormy night, gooey chocolate cookies made to mend a hurting heart, flour-coated countertops prepped for three generations of hands to knead dough to perfection. Life is its own epicurean journey, often leaving our brains mapped with memories of meals shared and prepared and enjoyed with family and friends, spanning continents and decades, cultures and traditions. Flavor is threaded into each of our lived experiences; it is a part of who we are and who we go on to become.

Our 2024 issue of This is Braselton is dedicated to the stories behind the dishes, the people keeping all the plates spinning and this beautiful town full of charm and appeal that we lovingly call home.

From juicy burgers with creative twists to must-order recommendations straight from our residents’ mouths, be prepared for tummy rumbles and cravings as you flip through pages full of mouthwatering food photography, descriptions and more. You will even learn some of the history behind many of your favorite restaurants and the humans who have dedicated themselves to elevating and diversifying the culinary experience in Braselton.

Also, within these pages, you will dive into some history, learning more about the Braselton library, the mill and our iconic Braselton Trolley. We expand on the town’s history with a deeper look into the Braselton family, examining their extensive contributions and living legacies. Even a more recent history lesson is hidden here, with an inside look at our new Arts Council and their philosophy and passion for bringing more art and creativity to our buildings, streets and structures.

Dog lovers will find a fun resource for all the best places to dine with your doggo, along with some helpful tips for all pet parents and siblings!

Braselton is a pet-friendly town, and we are always happy to see our furry neighbors out and about, at events and on our favorite patios.

Every Friday from May-September, the Braselton community comes together on the town green to buy and sell homegrown produce and food products at our popular Braselton Farmers Market. Market lovers will enjoy hearing from some of our amazing vendors and getting the

inside scoop on unique finds, yummy produce and baked goods. Shoppers will also love that we have highlighted a handful of our well-curated boutiques and shopping spots that house treasure troves just waiting to be discovered. And, speaking of shops, get a behind-the-scenes look at our Buy Local program, armed with tools and resources that offer additional support to our growing community of small businesses.

One thing is for sure: Each page tells a story, one that we love to tell again and again. Braselton is a town that offers the appeal of a popular getaway destination, full of delicious bites, exciting events, friendly faces and intriguing history. The best part is that you get all the food, fun, festivals and friendship right here in our small town filled with big love, creativity and a BIG appetite.

Restaurant Pioneers Braselton’s name may be growing synonymous with “Foodie Destination,” but did you know that behind the dishes that draw the crowds are owners with a dream and the dedication to see it through? We want to just briefly draw back the curtain on some of the hearts and minds behind a few of the restaurants we love so much. A peek into their “why” will offer us a glimpse of what brought them to Braselton and our community of food lovers.

PaPa Jack’s Country Kitchen

Bill Mays As a boy, Bill Mays would wake up early on Saturdays, not for the morning cartoons, but for his time in the kitchen, cooking. He jokes that his parents wondered why he couldn’t “just sleep in like everybody else,” but he followed his gut even at a young age—straight to the stove to cook up bacon, eggs and fluffy pancakes. As Bill grew up, he assumed he would follow in his father’s seafood-selling footsteps, but actually found himself working in a local country restaurant.

After three years of running the kitchen there, he gave his notice and walked out, not knowing what he would do next.

Next was actually an adventure in ownership, starting with two sandwich shops in Brookhaven and Atlanta and leading to a seafood restaurant in Commerce called Stringer’s Fish Camp. Bill owned that restaurant for 14 years before selling it. After that, you know most of the

story. In 2005, he opened PaPa Jack’s next to the Bottle Shop in Duncan Corners. That busy intersection of today was a little four-way stop back then with not much else around it.

“People looked at me like I had lost my mind! ‘What are you doing, Bill?’” he remembers fondly. “But, it’s 2023, and somehow this ‘little old biscuit boy’ is still here!”

Six years ago, PaPa Jack’s moved from their 3,000-square-foot building into the 8,000-square-foot space where they are today. “I came to Braselton because I knew it was growing at a time when the owners of the Bottle Shop, Frank and Billy Duncan, mentioned wanting a restaurant in the space next to them,” Bill states.

What kept Bill here, though, were the people. He gives our elected officials and administration high marks and acknowledges that past and present members have been incredibly supportive. For Bill, even as Braselton

grows, the best part about being here is our small-town, community feel.

“My employees, my customers, they have become family. Our customers are so loyal; we have served multiple generations of their families. I have watched kids grow up, get married and bring their children in to see us,” Bill muses. “Some come by daily, more than once! Most days, you can always check your clock by who’s walking in our door.” When Bill has downtime, he golfs, fishes, cares for his lawn and zones out to good music by his fire pit. He is active in our community, so you may find him at the Wine Festival, 4th of July fireworks or shopping art and antiques! He remarks, “Braselton is one-stop living. We truly have everything here to enjoy a wonderful lifestyle.” We couldn’t agree more.

Cotton Calf Kitchen

Vincent Price A love of food was distilled in Vincent Price by the fantastic cooks surrounding him in his early years. His mother’s ability to create amazing dinners seemingly out of thin air created a warm and inviting atmosphere in his home, even drawing neighbors, friends and family.

“My mother always made sure people were well-fed when leaving our home.

She would say that her cooking was a love letter to those who came to dinner,” Vincent recalls.

His story at Cotton Calf Kitchen began in a roundabout way. He was initially brought in to start a wine program, sell high-end wines and organize and manage their host stand. Vincent planned to use this opportunity to fund his ability to go back to school.

However, plans changed when the owners, Larry Monroe and Cindy Coker Green, pictured below, were so fond of his incredible work that they asked him to come on board full-time as the new general manager.

Even though the prospect of running the restaurant had been an enticing prospect to him all along, it would mean giving up his hopes of returning to school. Spoiler alert­—Vincent said yes and recalls, “Eight years later, this has been the most significant leap of faith I have ever taken in my life, and it has paid off in spades.” For Vincent, the brightest part of this journey has been his staff and the guests—a deeply valued staff who trusts him and loyal guests that always leave happy as a result.

Vincent’s ability to pair dishes and wines, offer mouthwatering details when describing a dish and his deep love of the entire dining experience have given him an incredible gift to share with restaurant patrons. He recalls dining in New Orleans once when the “rockstar chef” Ariel Sigler approached him and asked him to describe his most beloved dining experience. In his words, “I simply described some of my most beloved and memorable family meals from growing up for him, and then he just left. I thought, ‘Have I offended him?’ But, after the dinner, this chef came back and told me that I should entertain the thought of working as a maitre’d.” Needless to say, we are all thankful Vincent and his gift of translating the language of food found their way to Braselton and Cotton Calf Kitchen.

Braselton’s small-town charm was familiar to Vincent, a small-town South Carolina native. After living in several larger cities, he wanted a slower pace. He remarks, “Braselton offered proximity to a major city and the sophistication of being so close to that city, but also all of the

advantages of a small town.” Loyalty has become a guidepost for Vincent in how he runs the restaurant.

Listening to guest feedback and building meaningful relationships around food have led to the longevity and popularity of Cotton Calf Kitchen, where patrons come year after year to celebrate their most precious milestones. “We experience life with our guests. We host surprise parties and engagements, providing a beautiful atmosphere and exquisite food for some of our guests’ most memorable moments,” Vincent says.

When Vincent gets a little time to kick back, he relaxes at home with his husband, Dennis, and dog, Lulu, and cooks in his home kitchen. You will also find him out in the community, whether at the Rock the Block event or at Hoschton Coffee Company, grabbing a tasty drink.

Stonewall’s BBQ

Ronnie Jones Ronnie Jones comes from a long line of food enthusiasts, so his love of food is both authentic and long-standing. A father who was passionate about the industry and a mother who spent time teaching Ronnie to cook in the kitchen influenced him greatly as he grew up deciding what to do with his life.

“There was never a moment in my life where my family wasn’t cooking lots of food for various occasions; it was just part of how we came together,” he recalls.

with more financial stability. And, while being my own boss has its ups and downs, at the end of the day, success is in my own hands, not someone else’s,” Ronnie explains.

When it came to location, Braselton was the easy choice. With his home right down the road in Hoschton, it was not hard to see how much the town of Braselton was growing. That growth, plus access to the interstate and the city’s support, made Braselton the right place to open the doors.

Once he knew corporate America was not a good fit for him or his family, he set out on his own, with plenty of support from his father, and Stonewall’s was born. “I wanted a better life for my family, hopefully

an impact on me personally on how I run my business.” While Ronnie admits it is hard to take time off, he does prioritize family time, often relaxing on the back porch and taking in the view of his family’s farm. His family also enjoys attending the Petit Le Mans every year and volunteering within the community to help families whose children are fighting cancer.

“It’s rewarding to help spread smiles, offer support and have fun with these families who are so deserving,” Ronnie adds.

Jack’s Public House (and others)

Jack & Hollie Ansley Jack and Hollie have built a life and a legacy around food. It may sound like the jacket of a bestselling novel, but for Jack and Hollie, it is simply their story. We will take you back to the ‘80s, briefly, because you need to know that Jack has always loved Braselton. From 1985-1989, car enthusiast Jack was a managing partner at Road Atlanta. Before that, he was a driver, crew chief for Bob Akin and team owner for the champion USA Lotus team. Not only that, he owned 75 acres in Braselton, where he trained horses, which led to an injury that eventually led him into hospitality.

When Hollie and Jack met, he had been running the Chikin Ranch at the Pendergrass Flea Market since 2003. He was known for his Chicken on a Stick and mouthwatering BBQ. At the time, Hollie was a supervisor at the Department of Family and Children Services and attending a doctoral program at UGA. After the couple opened Jacks’s in 2007, they became so busy that Hollie joined Jack in the business full-time in 2008 while finishing school. In 2012, they purchased locally loved Jeffrey’s Sports Grill. Not too long after, they leased the property now known as

Jack’s Local Station in downtown Braselton in 2017.

Never a pair to back down from a challenge, in 2020, Hollie and Jack joined with friends and business associates, Lee Botts and Jim Southard, to reimagine the Traditions Golf and Country Club. Jim and Lee managed the golf side of things while Jack and Hollie renovated and reopened the restaurant, now known as Twenty7. The couple renovated and transitioned Jeffrey’s into Jack’s Public House that same year. Then, in 2021, they began building out and opening Rebar in the 1904 building.

Rebar officially opened in 2023 to rave reviews.

Throughout the years, Jack has used the culinary experiences and lessons he has learned to influence every part of their restaurant empire. His infamous Chicken on a Stick is still available as a menu item today at each of their locations except for Rebar. Everything Hollie knows about the industry, she has learned from Jack, and they both have had a tremendous impact on the foodie environment in Braselton. Hollie says, “Running businesses in Braselton has shown us the loyalty and support of

our customers, who are now friends, and the town management. This is a unique area where people love to dine out and support family-owned restaurants, a community we are proud to be a part of both as owners and as patrons.”

The restaurant community is closeknit, according to Hollie, often sharing ideas and leaning on one another when needed. With so much support from town management and officials, local restaurants have many unique opportunities to share their menus with differing demographics, drawing guests from miles away. Even visitors notice that Braselton is unique in its small-town vibe because neighbors, business owners and town staff all seem to count one another as family.

“We are invested in this community, the residents and our businesses.

Our guests have become our friends, and our fellow restaurant owners have become trusted colleagues.

Even during the chaos of 2020, this community never stopped supporting each other, ordering take out, tipping extra, pretty much going above and beyond to offer their support,” Hollie remarks. “We love celebrating with this community. We just love being here in Braselton; whether traveling or visiting family, this is always the best place to come home to.”

The Galloping Galette

Viviane & Yannick Fonfrede The story of the delicious galettes and crêpes we all love begins across an ocean in Western France, where Viviane and Yannick met and started their life together. Viviane grew up in a Braselton-sized town called Châteaubriant, surrounded by family and food at large gatherings. She recalls, “My favorite times were when my mom cooked galettes and crêpes every Friday night. This was a generational tradition passed down from my maternal great-grandma.

These Friday night traditions became mine and Yannick’s as well. We would fill our home in Nantes with friends and family unfamiliar with our region and feed them galettes and crêpes, introducing them to our beloved delicacies and way of life.”

As a freelance translator, Viviane was often able to travel to Braselton, visiting family with Yannick and cooking their specialties to share. So, around 2015, when they began to dream of opening a crêperie of their own, they thought of Braselton as a perfect spot to begin their dream.

Before opening The Galloping Galette in 2017, Viviane and Yannick had very different career paths; hers in freelance translating and his in

decorating and finishing private homes for over 13 years. “There have been challenges,” Viviane shares. “This has been our first restaurant experience, our first time working together, and 2020 was simply an unprecedented time.

However, through it all, this has been an exhilarating experience full of wonderful moments and people.”

When asked what has been an unexpected bright spot in this journey, Viviane said, “The kindness of the South. The everlasting support from the community and town. The genuine relationships we have built over the years, whether it be with friends or our beloved guests. It has been precious and reassuring to us, with our family still based mainly in France, that Braselton is also home and family.”

Viviane and Yannick also attribute their success to the town’s management and administration.

From events and programs to advertising and collaboration, Braselton’s town staff is always creatively promoting and supporting its businesses. Even the relationships they have built with other business

owners have impacted the thriving of The Galloping Galette, as owners in the community are constantly helping one another and offering referrals.

“We love that you don’t have to drive outside Braselton to find restaurants offering a nice diversity of foods.

From casual to fine dining, it is all here. Even just in The 1904, there are varied options to enjoy,” Viviane says.

Yannick and Viviane have plenty of interests to fill any downtime they find. He loves vintage cars and antiquing when he’s not cheering on the Dawgs or Atlanta United.

Viviane can be found cracking open a mystery or historical novel in her quieter moments. And you would be hard-pressed to find a local business this couple doesn’t regularly support.

From shopping to dining to enjoying a little pampering, Yannick and Viviane are the living embodiment of loving your neighbor. Luckily, Braselton is overflowing with people like them, full of love and loyalty and ready to support a friend at any time.

LOVE AT FIRST BITE: DOUBLE STACK BURGER W/ PIMENTO CHEESE & BACON This pimento cheese is made in-house and is the best in town! We loved that you could choose from a single, double or triple patty to sandwich between the most perfect brioche bun. Their chips were crispy and delicious.

BRASELTON BREWING COMPANY BUN IN A MILLION BECAUSE: Beer. Lots of great beer. Plus, dogs are welcome outside on the patio, the atmosphere is energetic and you’re dining in a refurbished cotton gin.

SARAZEN’S BAR & GRILL BUN IN A MILLION BECAUSE: They have a spectacular view of the golf course! This hidden gem is off the beaten path, has great outdoor seating and is a lot of fun for kids.

LOVE AT FIRST BITE: ZINFANDEL MUSHROOM BURGER Rich in flavor, this burger made us feel right uptown.

Gruyere cheese and mushrooms marinated in a zinfandel demiglace are melted on top of the two (4-ounce) premium burger patties. Those flavorful mushrooms certainly elevated the experience. This ain’t your mama’s burger, y’all!

JUICY EXTRAS: Wagyu Burger specials are offered periodically; check their website!

JACK’S PUBLIC HOUSE BUN IN A MILLION BECAUSE: This is a neighborhood spot in a great location! They always have a “burger of the month” to enjoy while you catch the big game in their high-energy space with the coolest racing vibes!

LOVE AT FIRST BITE: GREEK LOVERS They had us at tzatziki. Pile on the feta cheese, cucumbers, tomato, lettuce, olive tapenade and onion, and this burger is feta-bulous!!

RACHETTI’S CAFÉ & PIZZERIA BUN IN A MILLION BECAUSE: They give very clever names to their burgers, likeTimmy N Tommy Got in a Fight Burger, Churchill Downs Burger and Billy the Kid Burger. We were truly surprised to find so many great burgers at an Italian pizza place!

LOVE AT FIRST BITE: THE DUKE BURGER The Duke features applewood smoked bacon, homemade Carolina sauce, onion rings, cheddar AND American cheese. The buttery bun could barely carry this loaded burger, but it got the job done!

JUICY EXTRAS: Next time you’re planning an event, keep Rachetti’s catering options in mind!

PADDY’S IRISH PUB BUN IN A MILLION BECAUSE: It’s a pub, y’all! Great food and atmosphere, and we just love that the pub was built in Dublin, Ireland, and reassembled here at Chateau Elan in 1997.

LOVE AT FIRST BITE: PADDY’S OLD TIMER’S BURGER This burger was Top o’ the Morning! The Irish bacon, caramelized onions, watercress mayo and Irish cheddar cheese toppings on a brioche potato bun, along with the great atmosphere, made us want to do an Irish jig! We also love that there are options to turn this scrumptious burger into a chicken or veggie burger!

JUICY EXTRAS: Paddy’s is a stop on the Cocktail Trail! We enjoyed sipping on the Luck of the Irish before our meal. Fun and delicious!

HOUNDSTOOTH GRILL AND TAVERN BUN IN A MILLION BECAUSE: They are right in the heart of Braselton. Come in for happy hour, stay for dinner and order the biggest burger in town—when it comes to our appetites, size does matter.

LOVE AT FIRST BITE: THE CLASSIC BURGER This hefty burger is made with a half-pound of black Angus beef and topped with melted cheddar cheese and bacon, plus all the classic offerings. It was a handful that we thoroughly enjoyed! Perfectly seasoned and wonderfully juicy.

JUICY EXTRAS: Convenient location puts you right at the Mulberry Walk trolley stop!

JACK’S BUN IN A MILLION BECAUSE: You’ll find the best dive bar vibes here, plus outstanding food. You will also love tipping the hardest-working staff in Braselton! Locals love the friendly, laid-back atmosphere, the food and the large patio for outdoor dining.

LOVE AT FIRST BITE: TURKEY BURGER Like a regular burger but on steroids. White American cheese tops this delicious turkey burger, along with fresh LTO. That’s lettuce, tomato and onion. But the big surprise was the house-made bang bang sauce which took it over the top. We agree that we could eat this one every day.

JUICY EXTRAS: The wedge salad is divine! You won’t regret adding it to your order!

“We loved the bright, open atmosphere here. It was the perfect setting to try the Charred Limoncello Fizz. This gorgeous cocktail did not disappoint.”

Their next stop was Braselton Brewing Company.

“Here we divided and conquered! Two of us tried the sangria while the others sipped on the Brewpub Shandy.

Both were light and refreshing. We loved the cool vibe at the brewery and the friendly staff.”

We sat on the comfy outside patio and watched the sunset. After much laughter and girl talk, we agreed it was the perfect way to spend quality time together.”

Next, the group headed to Paddy’s Irish Pub at Chateau Elan Winery and Resort.

While at Paddy’s, everyone must try their signature drink, the “Luck of the Irish.” While sipping on this drink, it feels like you are at the beach watching the sunset.

When Mike, Ronnie, Henry and Carl headed out on the Trail, they started with Jack’s Public House, where they enjoyed various cocktails, agreeing that the Tennessee Mule and the Public Old Fashioned were worth the trip.

“We were immediately seated at a four-top and greeted with a smile from our server.”

With great service and drinks, I highly recommend everyone come to Jack’s Public House.

The vibe is low-key and relaxed. It’s a great place to come and enjoy the big city atmosphere in the small town of Braselton.

To finish off their night, the guys stopped in at Louis’ House of Bourbon, where they enjoyed a double Blanton’s neat, which they claimed was “perfect.”

“The Old Fashioned was on point here; we just wish there had been more of it in the glass!”

We all enjoyed playing pool and shuffleboard in the back section of Louis’; it was quieter, and we could all cut up and enjoy the drinks and games.

friends on the town For longtime friends Indria, Leroy, Caryn, Mike, Diane and Billy, the Cocktail Trail was the perfect way to get together and enjoy palette-pleasing drinks and dishes. They chose to start their night at Versailles, where they enjoyed a variety of delicious red wines and the Bacon Carbonise with Bulleit Rye. “The ambiance here is French Flair paired with genteel Southern Hospitality.”

The bar in Versailles is so unique. You are seated in this beautiful, open atrium that elevates the entire experience.

This group chose Cotton Calf Kitchen next, trying the Grilled Pineapple Margarita and the Kentucky Peach Mule.

“The margarita was full of grilled pineapple, giving the drink an aesthetically pleasing, high-end feel. We loved enjoying our refreshing choices in the spacious bar that allows for intimate conversations.”

The Kentucky Mule is very refreshing after a long day of golf on one of Braselton’s courses, and the cocktails compliment the well-presented appetizers.

“There is this great ‘Florida Keys’ vibe at Rebar that is matched with great hospitality and delicious drinks. We all agreed that the color-changing Aviator cocktail was a great bit of fun while loving the flavors of the Lady in Pink and the Turquoise Turtle.”

For their final stop, the six friends stopped into Flourish Taproom to finish the night perfectly. With so many options, the group grabbed a variety to try: “The Pinot Jito is a perfectly balanced and refreshing cocktail. The Blueberry Lemonade is just the right blend of citrus and berry and is always a favorite. For a refreshing but not overly hoppy IPA, go for the Hazy Like a Fox; it will not disappoint.

date night It didn’t take long for Jim, Stephanie, Lacey, Shaun, Kerri and Michael to get out the door and hop aboard the Braselton Trolley to start their date night adventure once the sitters arrived to watch over the kiddos.

“It was as if the stars had aligned! We all scored a sitter, so we arranged a private trolley rental. It was the ideal way to do date night! And with all that room on board, we had to invite friends to come with!”

Their first stop was Local Station in historic downtown Braselton. Here, the group tried the Briar Patch, a beautiful cocktail full of flavor.

“Local Station was hopping. We had so much fun hanging out in the bar with the garage door open to the outside patio. The cocktails are always outstanding here.”

Back on the trolley, the group headed to stop No. 2, Cork It, just around the corner. Most of the group tried the Smoked Old Fashioned here.

“We absolutely loved hanging out at Cork It. We settled into a cozy corner seating area and enjoyed the fabulous cocktails and their charcuterie board, which was the star of the show.”

Their next stop was Hit’s Taproom. Here, the group was split. Half tried the Pretty in Pink, and the other half A Taste of Sunshine.

At Hit’s, we had fun debating whose drink was better! Ultimately, we couldn’t decide; they were both outstanding!

The group decided to say their last cheers of the night at Louis’ House of Bourbon over the Classic Old Fashioned.

“Here we enjoyed an outstanding dinner downstairs at Versailles, then finished the night up at Louis’. It was the perfect way to enjoy the Trail with friends. And we can’t wait to do it again.”

If you visit the Farmers Market, chances are you will see Crystal, from mrshappyhomemaker.com, shopping the stalls and chatting with vendors. We caught up with her one afternoon for a chat!

Tell us about the blog: I started my food blog 14 years ago as a hobby while pregnant and on bed rest with my now 13-year-old son. In 2015, when I was 34, my husband suddenly passed away—leaving me with three children. Life changed in an instant! I moved from my hometown in North Carolina to this area of Georgia just a few months after the passing of my husband to be near my parents. As I focused on building my food blog, I eventually began to film, produce and post cooking videos online.

How does the Farmers Market feature on your blog?

I have been shopping at the Braselton Farmers Market for about six years. I love the location of it—right in the historic downtown area of Braselton, surrounded by some of my favorite little shops and restaurants in the area. The vendors and the shop and restaurant owners in the area have become my friends. The sense of community just makes me feel at home.

Each week, I feature a cooking video using ingredients I find at the Farmers Market. I arrive early to preview what the vendors have brought. I walk around the entire market multiple times, brainstorming what recipes to feature that week. Then, I purchase everything I need to come home with me and become a delicious recipe I film myself cooking.

Why do Community Markets matter?

In our modern-day society, many of us (myself included) simply pop into the local grocery store and grab things from the shelf without a second thought about where that food came from or how it was grown. When you shop at the market, you are more connected to the entire process­—soil to table. On top of that, you are spending your money within your community to help your local farmers continue to provide their community with fresh food.

Visit here often enough, and you’ll recognize Braselton’s ongoing commitment to continuous improvement. Not only do we believe “It’s Better in Braselton,” but we also embrace the concept that “We’re Only Getting Better in Braselton.” And that commitment isn’t related to housing, tourism and infrastructure alone but extends to our ever-growing business community­—the true backbone of our town. Through the vision of our Town Council to develop a program to promote Braselton businesses townwide, our Buy Local Braselton program was born in 2016. It’s only fitting that the Buy Local Braselton launch date coincided with our centennial year, given that the program has been making town history ever since.

THE “WHY” BEHIND THE BUY LOCAL PROGRAM If you hop aboard one of our trolley tours, you’ll learn that the boundaries of the Town of Braselton span into four counties and share borders with Hoschton, Buford and Flowery Branch. The Buy Local program consists of welcome mats, window clings, social media pages, networking events and events highlighting Braselton businesses­—wherever they may be.

Inspiring the program launch was the rapid expansion of Braselton West. Because many businesses in that area have a designated Flowery Branch or Buford mailing address through the post office, many times they weren’t aware that they are part of the Braselton business community.

GROWING BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS IN STEP WITH OUR TOWN To shine the spotlight on businesses outside of Braselton’s historic downtown district, we created events like the Paddy’s Day PathFest Parade & Quest every March, the Wine Hop in Braselton West each summer and the BonBon Trail shopping promotion each holiday season.

At the kickoff meeting, only 12 business owners were in attendance. At the end of the program’s first year, the list of participating businesses had grown to 40. Less than 10 years later, that list has grown to include a database of over 300 businesses and continues to grow.

Participating in the Buy Local program grants businesses promotion on the Facebook and Instagram pages, press releases to announce grand openings, participation in ribbon-cutting ceremonies, networking events, promotion

of available #BraseltonJobs, the opportunity to take part in town events and open lines of communication with town leaders and staff.

In addition to the Buy Local-branded welcome mats and window clings proudly displayed at many brickand-mortar stores and restaurants, businesses are also often gifted Buy Local swag such as koozies, sunglasses, tote bags and more. Of course, the best feature of the Buy Local program is that it’s FREE for Braselton businesses to participate! Currently, the Buy Local program supports the gamut from clothing boutiques, independent eateries, entertainment venues, hair salons, insurance agents, martial arts studios, dance studios, fitness gyms, doggy daycares and a world-class winery to home-based businesses including artists, bakers and photographers.

House of Clay Braselton Open since 2013, House of Clay has delighted folks of all ages for years with its interactive pottery painting classes and one-of-a-kind products.

The Braselton Farmers Market is a true farm-to-table experience that is becoming more and more rare in this day and age. The market features local growers, bakers and makers who have made or grown their offerings. Every Friday from May through September, the market is in full swing on the Braselton Town Green. The farm-to-table experience in Braselton highlights the importance of supporting local agriculture and business and also furthers community education on Georgia agriculture.

No matter the recipe, food always tastes better when it’s homegrown.

Braselton’s growing reputation for its public art is the result of years of purposeful planning across many town departments. The intentional additions of public art throughout our streets are central to the future identity of Braselton. We are a town that celebrates its history, its residents and its business owners, its natural beauty and its bright future. Beautification through public art shines a light on local artists and draws more visitors to our community, allowing a diverse appreciation for the unique communication that art provides.

As Braselton sought to implement a public art program, the Braselton Arts Council, Inc. (BAC) was created as the administrative arm dedicated to planning, reviewing, advising and increasing public art installments across the town. In May 2022, BAC called its inaugural meeting, appointed members and got to work.

The first gala to benefit the Braselton Arts Council occurred in March 2023. It was a night of grandeur and perplexity while Atlanta artist Julio Ceballos composed a live painting experience during the evening. Guests could bid on wrapped mystery gift boxes, wondering what they contained. The artist then opened each box and could only use the tools from each box. His creative decisions unfolded live onto the canvas. Each box contained items such as different acrylic colors, a spatula, a stencil, different brushes, a feather, metal pieces, etc. Halfway through the night, the artist opened a box to find a sandwich he then ate. The creative and inspiring night of live music, food and signature cocktails resulted in an entertaining and successful first gala fundraiser.

Through the efforts of the town and the Arts Council, the goal of increasing public art in Braselton has quickly become a reality.

Driving down our streets, you will see colorful crosswalks and murals. Most recently, the addition of a stunning metal installation at the newly expanded Braselton library has drawn admirers from across the region. Sculpture team J. Doyle Rogers (father) and Logan Berry (son) created “Sweet Sunshine” for the BAC’s public art program. BAC members worked with Doyle and Logan in December of 2022 to start the process with a sketch of the proposed “Sweet Sunshine” drafted by Logan. It was essential to place the sculpture in a high-traffic area, and the new expansion of the Braselton Public Library was the perfect place for the installation. Doyle and Logan wanted to inspire others with happiness, a sense of community, hope and the fun of learning.

The next installation, donated by Braseltonbased sculpture artist Brian Seay, resides at the trailhead for the Mulberry River Walk. This beautiful 6-foot stone sculpture carved from Georgia marble is titled “Horizon’s Window.”

Public art is an aesthetic and a compelling economic driver that attracts businesses, developers and visitors. Art installation throughout the town undergirds the identity of Braselton by embracing history and celebrating the vibrant and diverse community of people who call it home. The Arts Council aims to secure installations across the entirety of the town, not just the downtown district. They work with local businesses to partner in the planning and review of new art, whether that means seeing a vision come to life or brainstorming fresh ideas and inspiration. As applications for new art installations come through, BAC is the advisory body, reading and discussing the application, suggesting changes and, hopefully, offering their recommendation of approval to move forward. This well-executed partnership between the Town of Braselton, BAC, residents and local business owners ensures that the spirit of Braselton is captured and displayed beautifully in each thoughtfully created masterpiece installed in our community.

ArtRageous Inspired by the wild popularity of the Braselton Antique & Artisan Festival and the community’s response to public art, a new art-focused event became a reality in 2022: ArtRageous featuring ArtSquared. Hosted by the Braselton Downtown Development Authority, ArtRageous is going into its third year.

The festival is all about bringing local art to the community. It’s an opportunity for artists to showcase and sell their best works. Various mediums are represented during the one-day show. Also happening at the same time is ArtSquared, a live painting project with 12 artists, each commissioned to paint one side of an 8-foot square cube. After the event, the painted squares are moved to various downtown locations and on display for another year.

“We love this event for so many reasons. First, it supports local art and local artists. Second, we can add popup art downtown that continues to change,” says Cheri Huff, DDA secretary and owner of Elements Boutique and Spa. “Last year, I didn’t think it would be possible for the squares to be any better, but this year’s artists blew us away with their creativity and talent. It’s exciting to watch them and exciting to see their finished pieces at the end.”

The 2024 festival will take place inside the Braselton Civic Center and feature music and food trucks.

he genesis of the Town of Braselton reads like an epic Southern novel, filled with sweeping landscapes, love and loss. At its heart, three brothers, each imbued with a bold entrepreneurial spirit, transformed the once bucolic farmland into a thriving town center with a prosperous mercantile at its heart that drew customers from all over the area. Today, that mercantile still stands at historic Downtown Braselton’s core. While no longer the traditional mercantile operation of yesteryear, it continues to draw crowds from near and far.

Humble Beginnings In 1867, William Harrison Braselton married Susan Frances Hosch.

William’s family had been in Jackson County since the early 1800s when they moved here from Maryland for the rich farmland. They spent the earliest years of their marriage at the Hosch Plantation, farming and raising a family. All told, the couple had five children—three boys and two girls, William Henry, Green, John Oliver, Belle and Lena. In 1876, William had an opportunity to purchase 796 acres of farmland on the spot that would one day become the Town of Braselton. He moved his young family into an existing farmhouse on that land and began what would become an extensive and prosperous farming operation.

The 3 B’s Upon his passing in 1896, William Harrison Braselton’s young sons assumed control of his thriving farming operation. The young brothers were farming, ginning cotton and operating saw and grist mills. As if all that wasn’t enough to keep John, Green and William Henry busy, the trio had all become partners in the prospering mercantile known as the Braselton Brothers Department Store.

In 1904, they built a beautiful brick structure in what would soon become a prime location. It originally housed three departments­—dry goods, notions and shoes in one; beauty, artistic design, clothing and millinery in another; and groceries in the last.

Known as the “3 B’s,” one brother would source merchandise from New York once to twice a year and another would visit other Eastern markets for goods while John minded the store.

The Braselton Brothers were wellreputed for paying cash in exchange for inventory. The boys were wellfunded, given the success of their crops—including wheat, corn and cotton—paired with the popularity of their private-label fertilizer. In 1910, they added a three-story addition to the back of the store.

The Precursor to the Moder n Mall By 1916, Braselton was incorporated as a municipality, and oldest brother William Henry served as its first mayor. The Braselton Brothers Department Store now housed the post office, freight depot office, the Braselton Bank, the Chamber of Commerce and the Braselton Improvement Company. A powerful F3 tornado blew through town in 1920, damaging the store and the nearly completed new school building. The store was rebuilt better than ever before. That wasn’t the

only tragedy to strike in the 1920s.

Sadly, the family lost its matriarch, Susan Frances Hosch Braselton, to pneumonia in 1929. On her deathbed, she was flanked on all sides by her loving children.

Unfortunately, the store’s original visionary, John Oliver, was the first of the “3 B’s” to pass away.

It is said that 3,000 mourners attended his funeral in 1951. He was followed shortly thereafter by Green in 1953 and William Henry in 1956. With the “3 B’s” sons and daughters at the helm, a large modern supermarket was added to the Braselton Brothers Department Store in 1955. Appliance, furniture

However, by the early 1990s, after many years of success as a one-stop shop for local residents, the Braselton family made the difficult decision to close up shop and sell the building.

Libraries are more than shelves lined with well-loved books. They are the collective hush of people studying and discovering; they are the friendly faces that guide you through the stacks to find that next perfect read; they are repositories of information and inspiration spanning centuries. A community library is a treasure trove for all ages of curious minds, and our Braselton Library has long stood as a reminder that even the smallest group of people can impact generations of minds and hearts through reading.

Dating back to 1921 and the creation of the Braselton Woman’s Club, our library has undergone many iterations throughout the decades. From the moment they first gathered together, the Woman’s Club emphasized the importance of education and began purchasing books for the local high school. In 1922, this small group of women donated 250 books alongside other fundraisers and initiatives that benefited the school. These amazing women continued to focus on education and reading throughout the years, eventually sponsoring a bookmobile filled with Mrs. Ottis Braselton’s gracious donations in 1954.

Around 1964, the club began meeting at the “Home Economics” cottage at 65 Frances Street, where they hosted community events and created their own small library space. By 1974, the cottage officially became the West Jackson Public Library, run by volunteers and open to the public one afternoon each week.

The space officially became the Braselton Library in 2002 when it was added to the town’s official department list. The first librarian, Bev Adkins, was hired, and the

library’s hours expanded to 27 a week. As the town grew and flourished, so did the little library with humble roots.

Plans to build a larger standalone building began, and the current Braselton Library location opened in 2006. The John Oliver Braselton home at the corner of Brassie Lane inspired the design for the iconic library. With so much more space, the town was able to hire more staff and increase the hours even more, giving the public access to the library 43 hours a week across six days.

Over the years, families flocked to the library to attend events and programs geared toward community enrichment. In the summer, a wet and wild celebration of the end of the library’s Summer Reading Program often draws over 130 people. Even the West Jackson Fire Department joins in on the Water Day fun!

Storytime programming has always been well-attended by families and

occasionally includes the Braselton Police Department, West Jackson Fire Department and Jackson County Sheriff’s Department for special events. Many children in the Braselton community grew up attending storytime at the library, first as infants and growing into book lovers as young adults. The massive draw for families in the area to have a place full of great books and programs for their children played a significant role in the most recent expansion project completed in 2023.

The demand for additional books on more diverse subjects increased as the community grew. Essentially, there was not enough room to house the range of books required, even

leaving the Children’s and Young Adult space unable to shelve the entire collection of books owned by the library. So, a new era for the Braselton Library was born in 2022 with the beautifully designed expansion featuring large windows and a stunning staircase to inspire awe and creativity. The structure’s design is a modern twist on a barn, nodding to Braselton’s agricultural roots and the fact that the library sits on land that was originally part of the Braselton farming operation.

The first floor of the expansion will be home to the Children’s and Young Adult sections, while the second-floor space will host events and programs for all ages.

A Look Back and a Leap Forward T H E H I S TO RY O F B R A S E LTO N ’ S M I L L The Braselton grist and roller mill, known in the early days simply as the Enterprise Roller Mill, is a staple feature of the Braselton landscape. Built in 1900, this three-story mill was constructed by the Braselton Brothers, founders of Braselton. The mill is located in the Braselton Historic District across the street from the Northeast Georgia Bank, its red and white-washed exterior a bright landmark among the brick buildings.

Historically, mills were an integral piece of Southern agriculture. In more communal towns, farmers would bring their loads of grain to the mills to have the millers grind them into flour. The Braselton Brothers were successful farmers and harvested wheat and corn from their 1,800 acres of farmland. Reportedly, the Braselton family reaped upwards of 800 wheat bushels and thousands of corn each year. Farmers from surrounding areas often brought their grain to the mill for processing, either to sell themselves or to be sold at the Braselton Brothers Department Store.

cylindrical rollers to grind grain, unlike more stereotypical grist mills that utilized hydropower through a water wheel. This new roller mill technology became popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s as it spread from Hungary worldwide. Braselton’s mill was considered to have the latest and greatest technology at the time of its construction. It would have later converted its steam power to electricity in the 1910s.

The Braselton mill could produce anywhere from 50 to 70 barrels of flour and 300 bushels of cornmeal

per day. Each flour barrel weighed almost 200 pounds, and each bushel weighed around 50 pounds.

That means the Braselton mill produced over 13,000 pounds of flour on a good day! Town residents could purchase different brands of flour from the Braselton mill: “Three Bs,” named after the Braselton Brothers, or “Fast Flyer” and “Hap-i-Day” cornmeal.

Some local historians believe that the grist mill was the last one in Georgia to produce self-rising flour.

The mill remained operational through the mid-1960s.

Today, though dusty, the mill’s

interior remains virtually untouched and intact. Machines, equipment and furniture lie scattered throughout the mill. Also dotted along the walls and beams are penciled names, dates, Bible verses and the occasional instruction such as “don’t spit on the floor.” Not a single person in Braselton knows how to operate the old equipment, so it continues to lie in its undisturbed state.

The words “mill renovation” had been thrown around for over a decade in various capacities before any progress was made. In 2010, the town stabilized and weatherized

the grist mill’s wooden structure.

The mill’s original paint colors were discovered, and the exterior of the mill was restored, leading to its current white-washed appearance with red doors and trim. In recent years, the Braselton Town Council has made public its hopes for the mill’s preservation and future. In March 2023, ownership of the grist mill was transferred to the Braselton Visitors Bureau Authority. Bids took place to renovate the mill and erect a two-story addition to house offices, restrooms and a lobby connected to the mill on the ground floor. The mill will become offices and conference

rooms for the Visitors Bureau as well as a mill museum for the public to celebrate the history of the town’s old mill.

Renovations of the mill began in 2023. Proposed plans and scheduling updates are available at braselton.net under Current Capital Projects. Stay tuned over the next year to watch the transformation of the mill!

On the trolley tour, you’ll stop at the Braselton Family Cemetery halfway through. This lovely spot is the final resting place for more than five generations of Braseltons.

Originally the home of W.H. Braselton, one of the three Braselton brothers, the renovated manor is now the seat of Braselton’s town hall. On certain Fridays, Rand will take his walking tour inside to see the front of the house, which has been restored to showcase the home’s many original features.

Old Steps of the High School Did you know that, back in the day, sitting on the old Braselton High School steps with your sweetheart was an announcement to the town you were going steady? While the high school is long gone, the steps remain. Don’t forget to grab a picture with your significant other!

“What’s unique about Braselton,” Rand says, “is how [the town has] repurposed all the old buildings: W.H. Braselton’s home for the town hall. The antique store was the original elementary school. It’s great that they’ve balanced maintaining history and repurposing these things instead of tearing them down.”

THE RACY SIDE OF TOWN Motul Petit Le Mans Brings the World to Braselton (… and Braselton to the World)

Every fall for the last 26 years, a familiar hum—and an undeniable undercurrent of excitement—fills the air in the town of Braselton with the return of the Motul Petit Le Mans. At the heart of the action,10 hours of nonstop thrills combine for one of the greatest sportscar endurance races the world has ever seen—drawing an more than 150,000 race fans to our town each year.

THE INSPIRATION Proposed by Chateau Elan Winery & Resort founder and sportscar racing mogul Don Panoz in the late 1990s, the Petit Le Mans was inspired by the world-renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans in France. Considered one of the most prestigious races on the planet, the original Le Mans was first held on public roads around the French town of the same name in 1923. The year 2023 marked its centennial race. The Panoz Racing Team made its 24 Hours of Le Mans debut in the Panoz Esperante GTR-1 in 1997, and the first Petit Le Mans was hosted at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta the following year on October 10, 1998. While it doesn’t run the full 24 hours of the race that inspired it (thus “petit,” which translates as “small”), the 10-hour Petit Le Mans does follow many of the same rules established by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO).

Initially, the race was won by whoever achieved 1,000 miles–or 394 laps first. After 2013, that was changed to whoever crossed the finish line first at the 10-hour mark.

STAR STRUCK THE VENUE Situated on 750 park-like acres in the rolling hills of Northeast Georgia 35 miles north of Atlanta, Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta is the home of the Petit Le Mans. Once a farmer’s field, Road Atlanta hosted its first race on September 13, 1970. Over the years, its races have drawn the likes of movie stars and world-famous drivers.

A popular destination for race fans in the South, in 2012, it was purchased

by NASCAR Holdings. At its core is a 12-turn, 2.54-mile road course surrounded by a 10,000-seat terrace seating complex and 600,000+ square feet of paved team paddock space. The track also has approximately 130,000 square feet of paved Fan Zone. At this family-friendly venue, kids 12 and under always enjoy free admission when entering with a paid adult.

In addition to the Petit Le Mans, Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta plays host to the Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Mitty, Drift Atlanta, Atlanta Historic Races, WERA Motorcycle Roadracing, the Sports Car Club of Atlanta (SCCA) Majors, 24 Hours of Lemons, the famed Skip Barber Racing School and a variety of track days and driving clubs.

SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST A “RACE DAY” Although the annual four-day event bears the name Motul Petit Le Mans, the featured 10-hour race is actually held at the finale. The other three days are filled with manufacturer and team rivalries, car corrals and so much more. In 2023, The FOX Factory 120 was held on Friday of race week­­— representing a 120-minute flat-out sprint to the checkered flag. Race fans also enjoyed the VP Racing SportsCar Challenge and the Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich.

Beyond the heart-thumping action of four days of races, ticket holders were invited to explore the Fan Zone to grab a bite, check out interactive displays, shop for souvenirs and enjoy entertainment. The fun-fueled Kids Zone was a great draw for families at the event, where the youngest race fans could test their own endurance on a collection of inflatables. A popular Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta component is its onsite campgrounds—strategically placed on the infield and around the track’s perimeter. All camping sites are first come, first serve and allow everything from primitive tents and pop-up campers to RVs.

This four-day event is the largest annual international sporting event in Georgia and brings millions of dollars in revenue to local hotels, businesses, restaurants and more. As Braselton continues to grow, signature town events like Cravin’ Bacon, wine walks and holiday parades wouldn’t be possible without the help of a cluster of volunteers.

Braselton’s Bee Team is made up of community members who love their town and represent it in a positive and energetic way by lending a hand in events, special projects and promotions.

Since its revamp in 2023, the Bee Team has grown into an active, thriving cluster of more than 40 volunteers, most of whom are willing and ready to answer the call every time event organizers and project leaders give them a buzz.

Whether bustling behind the scenes or serving as the face of Braselton’s volunteer program, these worker bees are the boots on the ground during signature events like Braselton’s holiday parades and festivals. They work alongside town staff and other community leaders to make the magic happen and keep it all running smoothly.

Once applicants are approved and adequately trained, they will receive their own Bee Team uniform—a custom T-shirt and official name tag—to wear while on official Bee Team business. They will also receive an invitation to the annual Volunteer Reception.
