St. Mary Colleagues Make Giving a Priority

REPORT

St. Mary colleagues give generously every year to support programs and services at St. Mary. For example, last year, through the Spirit of Nursing Fund, the St. Mary Nursing Education Department purchased a PROMPT Birthing Simulator, a high-tech training device that provides hands-on skills to build proper techniques for Labor and Delivery nurses to avoid complications from shoulder dystocia, a condition where the newborn’s shoulder becomes stuck under the mother’s pelvic bone during delivery. Shoulder dystocia occurs in approximately 20,000 births in the U.S. each year and can lead to broken collar or shoulder bones and possibly brain damage. Having an experienced and skilled nursing staff to address complicated labor and delivery situations provides better patient outcomes and reduced risk for mother and baby.

Since 2007, the St. Mary Foundation has conducted the annual Colleague Giving Campaign at the hospital and all off-campus locations. During the campaign period, typically lasting six to eight weeks, colleagues are encouraged to make contributions to support the needs of the hospital. During the Expanding on Excellence Capital Campaign, colleagues, especially those working in the Emergency Department, were excited to have a direct impact on the ED expansion project. The collective effort of all St. Mary Colleagues in raising nearly $40,000 for the ED expansion resulted in a naming opportunity for the staff lounge. Two plaques “Emergency Department Staff Lounge made possible through the generosity of St. Mary Medical Center Colleagues” were installed on October 22nd.

Emergency and Trauma Services Emergency Expansion Phase II & III Complete

The second and final stages of the Emergency Department expansion are now complete and include specific areas for Pediatric, Prompt Care, Acute Care, and Expedited Treatment. The new layout completed in Phase II categorizes patients by the acuteness of their conditions and allows for them to be treated by the most appropriate healthcare providers as quickly as possible, helping to eliminate long wait times. The new design of the Emergency Department also includes a new, attractive, fully covered and fully lit Emergency Department entrance. Three lanes have been added in front of the entrance to facilitate traffic flow for patients arriving simultaneously and to provide convenient access to 24/7 valet parking. Other enhancements include a lobby with a fireplace that provides comfort for patients and families, new reception with three distinct areas to triage patients, plus private areas, or pods, where patients may comfortably wait for test results and/or additional treatment.

In addition to having one of the first 24/7 pediatric emergency care centers in the area, St. Mary is the only hospital in the region to implement the use of see Emergency and Trama Services next page
