Dear frienDS, It seems only appropriate to discuss the Winter issue of FOCUS amid the relentless snow and ice storms we’ve recently experienced here in the northeast. By the time this issue hits your mailbox, we will be easing into Spring and looking forward to more exciting hospital projects on the horizon.

In November, we brought our year-long 40th Anniversary celebration to a close at our annual President’s Society and Legacy Society recognition dinner. It was nice to see so many familiar faces in addition to meeting new friends of St. Mary.

The President’s Society has grown by leaps and bounds since it’s formation in 2007 because as we get the message out about St. Mary and its need for philanthropy, the community continues to respond favorably and generously.

Your support and donor dollars allowed us to complete the Emergency Department renovations, and we have seen a dramatic increase in efficiency and overall patient satisfaction.

We have begun the Labor & Delivery and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit renovations, which will allow us to care for Bucks County’s most defenseless patients and offer their parents and families much greater hope and peace of mind so close to home. ver the years it has often been said that “There’s No Place Like St. Mary,” so it made perfect sense to round out our 40th Anniversary year with a Ruby Slipper / Wizard of Oz theme at the annual President’s Society – Legacy Society recognition dinner.

Clearly, the strength of St. Mary is a reflection of the strong interest and support the community takes in its hospital, and for that we thank you.

labor & Delivery and nicu continues

S

t. Mary Medical Center along with its staff and physicians are very excited about the ongoing renovation and expansion of the Labor & Delivery and Neonatal Intensive Care Units. The refined units will greatly improve care to our youngest patients.

The first phase is complete: We have converted a Mother Baby room into an admission/holding nursery for four babies.

We will be encouraging the mother/baby model where babies room with their mothers.

The next phase is to convert the Well Baby Nursery into a temporary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This will take six weeks and when complete the existing NICU will close and construction will begin.

Construction for this phase will take six to eight months.

We will be reconfiguring and expanding the existing NICU space to accommodate six babies and their families. This phase also includes the construction of a new Labor and Delivery room.

t. Mary welcomed members of the community to the newly opened Phase III expansion of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Pediatric Emergency Care Center with a blessing ceremony on October 22.

“After three years of construction, we reached Phase III of our Emergency Care Center, which is among one of the greatest accomplishments for St. Mary Medical Center,” said Greg Wozniak, President and CEO during the celebration.

In addition to having one of the first 24/7 pediatric emergency care centers in the area, St. Mary is the only hospital in the region to implement the use of nitrous oxide (N20) in treating children. The practice of providing light sedation of N20 is a safe and effective way to reduce the pain and anxiety children and parents face in stressful situations such as administering stitches, mending lacerations, or helping with broken bones. Nitrous oxide is very fast acting, with virtually no side effects, according to doctors.

This final phase of the $22 million construction project completes the expansion of the pediatric care center, which is specially designed to meet the specific emergency medical needs of children and their families. Features include 11 private treatment rooms, a pediatric triage area, separate reception areas for potentially infectious and noninfectious conditions, and a specially equipped pediatric resuscitation room. The project has been generously supported by a $2 million grant from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation.

Making every hour count 53 colleagues show how an hour or two makes a world of difference

ach year, St. Mary colleagues are asked to make a financial pledge to support the medical center through the Colleague Giving Campaign. Among the pledge options is membership in the Giving Hours Society. Colleagues join this society by pledging the financial equivalent of one or two hours’ salary for each of the twenty-six bi-weekly payroll periods. This amount is deducted directly from their paychecks and applied to support the area of their choosing at St. Mary. Fifty colleagues pledged a collective 53 hours per pay for a total of over $65,000 for the 2014 campaign.

On Thursday, January 30th, the Foundation hosted an appreciation luncheon to recognize and thank these dedicated colleagues for their generous support.

en and Marilyn Franckowiak are loving and living retired life. They have lived in Bucks County long enough to witness St. Mary sprouting from a farm field and growing into a wonderful medical center. “It is comforting to know that our medical needs can be addressed within a short ride, and sophisticated emergency care is available at the end of an ambulance ride.”

There are so many reasons why we donate, encourage others to donate and volunteer our services.”

For the past year, Marilyn has worked for the Trauma Prevention Coordinator. Another area of opportunity for her service was the Healing Environment program. Marilyn makes afghans and hats for cancer patients, has delivered them to and visited with patients, and even designed two items to aid patients during their healing. Marilyn absolutely cherishes every minute of her more than 6500 hours volunteering.

Len’s volunteer time has been spent working with the Foundation. He refers to his first day with the Foundation as an “Oops” beginning. Committees

Marilyn was first encouraged to volunteer 25 years ago by Sr. Hildegarde Grogan, who, at the time was Vice-President of Patient Services.

Sr. Hildegarde needed someone to sift through tons of data and prepare charts—and at that time, it was with a pencil, ruler, and graph paper! Soon Marilyn was named a community representative to Ethics Committee on which she served for 15 years. Sister Hildegarde was aware that Marilyn’s first career was in nursing, and she put her to work researching and writing the nursing standards for the new Cancer Center. When Sister left, Marilyn continued to work for the next five Vice Presidents.

Since, his “Oops” day, Len has worked on the Capital Campaign of 2010, was Chairman of the first St. Mary Cyclefest (a motorcycle fundraiser), helped organize the Connector Project, and has been chairing the Foundation’s Ambassador Circle meetings for the past few years.

People often tell Len that they would rather not volunteer because they have difficulty asking others for money. That is understandable, but it doesn’t happen that way. As a volunteer most of your time isn’t spent asking people to donate, but rather, making people aware of important projects that have a great impact on the health of so many.

Our community is blessed with many generous people and, in most cases, simply making people aware of the needs of St. Mary is enough for them to volunteer their support. The involvement of so many people is why St. Mary has become a wonderful medical center.

Len and Marilyn choose to financially support St. Mary and volunteer, because they feel it is the right thing to do. Financing new facilities gives them the comfort of knowing that it saves lives and promotes healing. Volunteering gives them the opportunity to meet and work with so many wonderful people who, otherwise, would have never entered their sphere of life.

circle Special Delivery On the way with the closure of obstetrics at area hospitals St. Mary meets the challenge

he final Ambassador Circle meeting of 2013 was held on December 13th at Northampton Valley Country Club. The meeting began with a video presentation entitled Special Delivery: Welcoming Our Youngest Patients. This video shared two families’ experiences with the St. Mary Labor & Delivery and Neonatal Intensive Care Units as well as commentary by three St. Mary physicians. John Green, who was featured in the video with his wife, Galit, was in the audience as a guest. a link to this video is available on the Foundation website at www.StMaryFoundation.org/maternity.

Following the video, Marie Schickler, Administrative Director of Nursing and Dr. Prem Marlapudi, Director of NeonatalPerinatal Medicine and Chairman of Pediatrics, introduced the expansion plans for these units. Marie explained that Marie Schickler with Dr. Prem Marlapudi St. Mary has been delivering babies as long as it has been open. The renovation is necessary not only to update technologies but also to keep up with the demand for maternity services. With the closure of obstetrics units at many area hospitals, St. Mary saw an average increase of 50 deliveries per month in 2013. St. Mary is the only remaining hospital in Lower Bucks County with maternity services. The expansion will ensure that we are prepared to provide care and delivery for every expectant mother who comes to us, including those who are high-risk and have special needs. After the presentation, Marie and Dr. Marlapudi took questions from the audience regarding obstetrics services and the expansion project. Once construction has started, the project will take approximately 12 months to complete at a cost of $4.3 million.

plaYing Santa at St. MarY chilDren’S health center for the ninth consecutive year, bucks county hOgS spread christmas joy

he annual Christmas party for the St. Mary Children’s Health Center was held on December 14th at the Bensalem Community Ministries campus. Despite the frigid weather and snowfall, hundreds of families lined up to visit with Santa and receive gifts for their children. For the ninth consecutive year, Bucks County Harley Owners’ Group #4309 in Langhorne supplied a number of the gifts distributed at the party. After delivering their donations, the group took the opportunity to visit with Santa and some of the families. Terri Rivera,VP St. Mary Mission and Community Health, presented the group with a plaque in appreciation of their long-standing support of the event and for helping to bring smiles to so many faces each year.

Todd thanked everyone for their continued generosity and illustrated how it’s through philanthropic giving that we are so fortunate to have such incredible healthcare “right in our own back yard.” Todd drove this point home by comparing our donors to the characters in the Wizard of Oz. “The Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and Dorothy desperately wanted brains, a heart, courage and a way home, and eventually discovered they possessed those gifts all along. Every day our donors use their brains to decide where to use their time, talents and treasure; they use their hearts to decide what programs to support; and it takes courage to promote a cause that is dear to them. All of those combined attributes help to ensure that our patients will find their way back home, healed and happy.”

Greg gave an update on the status of the completed, continuing, and future construction projects and upgrades being implemented at St. Mary.

Each year, the goal of the annual President’s Society / Legacy Society dinner is to thank donors who give more than $5,000 per year, Legacy donors who have named St. Mary in their estate plans, and lifetime donors, all of whom support the hospital through their generosity.

To best illustrate the positive impact that these gifts have on our patients, the St. Mary Foundation produces a short video each year that tells the emotional story of a grateful patient whose life was changed due to the technical expertise of our medical staff combined with the latest in cutting edge equipment.

This year’s video told the story of two different families who would not be enjoying the sound of their children’s laughter had it not been for the caring and knowledgeable staff in our Labor & Delivery Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

cOOKing with the carDiOlOgiSt Cooking instructions Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. add gnocchi and cook, stirring often, until plumped and starting to brown, 5 to 7 minutes. Transfer to a bowl. add the remaining 1 teaspoon oil and onion to the pan and cook, stirring, over medium heat, for 2 minutes. Stir in garlic and water. Cover and cook until the onion is soft, 4 to 6 minutes. add chard (or spinach) and cook, stirring, until starting to wilt, 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, beans and pepper and bring to a simmer.

Stir in the gnocchi and sprinkle with mozzarella and Parmesan. Cover and cook until the cheese is melted and the sauce is bubbling, about 3 minutes.

Skillet gnocchi with chard & white beans Description In this one-skillet supper, we toss dark leafy greens, diced tomatoes and white beans with gnocchi and top it all with gooey mozzarella. Serve with a mixed green salad with vinaigrette.

Ingredients 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil, divided 1 16-ounce package shelf-stable gnocchi (see Cook’s Tip) 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced 4 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup water 6 cups chopped chard leaves (about 1 small bunch) or spinach 1 15-ounce can diced tomatoes with Italian seasonings 1 15-ounce can white beans, rinsed 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1/2 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese 1/4 cup finely shredded Parmesan cheese

The Guardian Angel program provides the opportunity to recognize a St. Mary staff member or physician while supporting the mission of treating the mind, body and spirit with skill and compassion. In 2013, nearly two hundred St. Mary physicians and colleagues were honored as Guardian Angels with donations made in their names by grateful patients and families.

In addition to receiving a commemorative certificate and pin, each Guardian Angel honoree is invited to the annual recognition luncheon hosted by the St. Mary Foundation. Despite the freezing winter storm outside, nearly eighty Angels gathered together in the hospital’s Outpatient Care Facility for this reception on Wednesday, February 5th. Foundation Vice President, John Marcy, briefly addressed the group to say “thank you” for everything they do. The exceptional care they provide truly makes a difference in the lives of our patients.

Join us for a day of food and shopping in New York City. This gourmet markets tour takes you to some of New York’s hottest food markets and neighborhoods. You’ll be provided with detailed information about what to look for at each stop and your guide will be able to assist you with any questions you might have. We'll travel around the city in a comfortable coach, allowing you to relax and enjoy some really special spots in the city.

The event will be held at the picturesque Spring Mill Manor in Ivyland, Pa. The night begins at 5 p.m. with a cocktail hour, where clothes from the Community League’s Thrift Shop will be informally modeled. There will also be sales by Hi-Ho Silver and raffle baskets available.

After 6:30 p.m. doors to the ballroom open and guests are invited to enjoy a delicious dinner and fashion show. You’ll have a blast watching professional female models, several male St. Mary administrators and colleagues, kids, and therapy dogs strut their stuff wearing stylish new clothes. The men from St. Mary that will be modeling include: Greg Wozniak, Gary Zimmer, Joe Fisher, Jim Gentile, Harry Meyers, and Baber Ghauri. The men will be wearing clothes supplied by the Men’s and Boy’s Shop in Huntingdon Valley. The professional female models will be wearing clothes from Chico’s in Langhorne, Pa. and Berta Sawyer in Huntingdon Valley.

The therapy dogs will be striding down the runway in clothing from Dogs & Cats Rule in Newtown, Pa. Yola O’Kane, Spring into Fashion chair, says, “It’s not going to be your standard fashion show. Some of the models dance as they head down the runway. It’s going to be really entertaining!”

1. Make a bigger difference. Most of your assets are probably not in your checkbook. Planned gifts allow you to take property that you don’t seldom think about and make a generous gift.

2. a gift that costs you nothing. Most gifts through your will, revocable trust, life insurance policy, or retirement account will make a big difference to St. Mary but won’t cost you anything while you’re alive.

3. Earn an income from your gift. You may not realize that a planned gift can pay you an attractive rate of return. For example, a Gift Annuity funded by an 85-year-old will pay a 7.8% return, guaranteed for life, and St. Mary will still receive a generous gift from you.

4. Your planned gift can be your back up plan. St. Mary has benefited from a number of gifts that came to us almost by default. Please consider naming St. Mary as a contingent beneficiary if some other condition is not met, such as another beneficiary passing away before you.

5. Make a choice between leaving money to St. Mary or Taxes. Many planned gifts are offset by savings in federal or state taxes. This is especially true of gifts from an IRA or similar retirement account.
