dear FrIeNdS, The end of the 2014 fiscal year brings into focus the generosity of our donors and the good work they have helped St. Mary achieve over the past 12 months.

I want to express my personal gratitude to each of you for your support. PatientCentered Care and providing advanced services to our community is reinforced by numerous donors that place St. Mary Medical Center as a top priority for their philanthropic support. The Emergency & Pediatric Care departments, Surgical Services, Heart & Vascular department, Cancer Center and our community ministries and the patients who rely on those areas for care have all benefited from community support.

Looking toward the next fiscal year, the St. Mary Foundation will support the strategic initiatives that will further enhance the hospital’s ability to care for the most vulnerable, sick and infirmed.

The Labor/Delivery and Neonatal Intensive Care units will continue to be our major focus as the work on the renovation and expansion of these two areas continues. The finished unit will offer eight large birthing suites with four new adjacent nursing stations; two specially designed private recovery rooms; and two private triage rooms with private bathrooms and a dedicated nurse’s station. The NICU will provide an optimum healing environment with comfortable, private rooms designed for maximum interaction between mother and baby. The renovations will provide a total of six rooms and a renovated family room.

A new 26 medical/surgical bed unit consisting of all single rooms will replace the St. Mary Rehabilitation unit that recently relocated to the new 50 bed acute care St. Mary Rehabilitation Hospital just across the street.

Orthopedics and joint replacement will continue to grow. The inpatient orthopedic unit will move to a newly renovated 15 bed private room unit on the first floor. This move will also incorporate a new inpatient rehabilitation gym that will aid in the recovery process for these patients.

The Neurology Medical/Surgical unit is a combination of private and semi-private rooms. These rooms will be refurbished to enhance the patient experience.

As we move forward with the planning of these patient-centered care initiatives, we will advise you of opportunities to support these projects and update you on the progress towards completion.

phIlaNthrOpy putting a smile on the faces of our littlest patients

O

ne of the most important decisions expectant parents will make during the course of their pregnancy is where to go for prenatal care and where to deliver their precious bundle of joy. That decision is even more vital when potential complications exist.

While other area hospitals have shown a decline in maternity and labor & delivery care — in fact, some have closed their departments altogether — St. Mary has experienced a dramatic increase in the need for these services, a trend that promises to continue well into the future.

Dr. Prem Marlapudi, Director of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and Chairman of Pediatrics, is a strong supporter of the plans for the upcoming expansion and renovations to the Labor & Delivery Unit including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and together with his wife, Dr. Grace Marlapudi, recently gave a generous donation to these projects.

“These renovations are long overdue. It is critical that parents and babies have access to the most advanced, state-of-the-art equipment and qualified medical professionals.” These modifications and expansion of the NICU will allow for the best care in a semi-private setting, a component that is crucial in allowing these babies to thrive and bond with their parents.

Dr. Marlapudi explained that in effect, Labor & Delivery is the backbone of a community hospital.

It is generally a department where lifelong relationships begin and many decisions for the future are made. Based on what a family experiences, they will encourage other family members, friends and community members to utilize the services of St. Mary for everything from a broken bone, to major surgery, to stroke, cardiovascular, and cancer care. “We want to do everything we can to ensure that St. Mary is the hospital of choice for the residents of Bucks County and beyond.”

Dr. Marlapudi has been with St. Mary since 1989 where he established the first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Bucks County, which is

staffed by experienced NICU Nurses and in-house Board-Certified Neonatologists around the clock.

They have cared for so many premature babies over the years, many of whom are now young adults. St. Mary’s NICU has the distinction of having the best outcomes with a shorter length of stay and lowest mortality and morbidity rates compared to similar units in the country. At larger city hospitals, there are multiple layers of care, and here it is comforting for parents to deal directly with experienced specialist physicians to make critical and time-sensitive decisions.

Dr. Marlapudi is aware of many babies in high-risk situations who don’t have a chance from the beginning, as so many areas in this country and around the world lack the availability of in-house specialized Neonatology Services. “It gives me so much heartfelt satisfaction to see the positive outcomes that we are able to provide due to the kindness and generosity of St. Mary donors who give time and again to programs that truly make a difference. It is so touching to see these children at our NICU reunions, year after year, happy and healthy. That is exactly what our gifts are for — happy, healthy families. What could be more rewarding?”

Members always in the know on the latest and greatest at St. Mary

n Thursday morning, March 13th, members of the St. Mary Ambassadors Circle met over breakfast to hear the latest Medical Center and Foundation news. After a welcome and opening prayer, Jonathan Maner, SVP, Langhorne Physician Services was invited to give his presentation on Physician Strategy and Customer Relations Management at St. Mary Medical Center. A relatively new addition to St. Mary, Jonathan brings nearly twenty years’ experience with him to his role in positioning Langhorne Physician Services to achieve the “triple aim” of improving the patient experience, the health of the community, and the cost of delivering care. In order to reach this goal, Jonathan and St. Mary will be looking at several factors in medical care delivery.

The first step is assessing whether the hours, locations, and types of services offered meet the needs of the community. Using a number of survey and feedback methods, these questions as well as the level of patient satisfaction will be assessed.

the afternoon’s first guest speaker. With an extensive background in various administrative roles within a medical facility, Beth Ann joined St. Mary in November of 2013. She, along with three Project Directors, is tasked with measuring and modifying processes and procedures throughout St. Mary to increase efficiency and effectiveness. Operations Improvement is essential as it allows for the fulfillment of the mission and vision as well as significantly adds to patient and colleague satisfaction. Projects to undergo the operations improvement process are selected by their impact on top strategic imperatives including primary care/population health and service line growth, among others. Once a project is chosen, Beth Ann and her team select the methodology and tools that will bring the best improvement outcomes.

Operations Improvement is extremely beneficial at St. Mary because successful projects not only identify and incorporate real financial savings but also create a culture of continually striving for the best; which is a benefit for our patients as well as our colleagues.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) will also help in improving the experience by collecting and using specific database information to connect with patients through targeted health education, outreach opportunities, and coordination of services.

Clinical Integration will also help in all aspects of reaching the “triple aim” by allowing participants across the healthcare spectrum — including providers, facilities and payers — to communicate clinical and cost data. This will not only improve coordination and delivery of care but also increase cost efficiency.

Following Jonathan’s presentation, Jeff Yarmel, Executive VP & COO for St. Mary, gave the group a hospital update. Jeff re-emphasized the importance of the partnership between LPS practices and St. Mary as explained in Jonathan’s presentation. He also gave a status report on the Rehabilitation Hospital and Labor & Delivery/NICU renovations.

With the fiscal year drawing to a close, the Ambassador Circle held its final 2014 meeting over lunch on May 16th at Northampton Valley Country Club.

With the Rehabilitation Hospital ready to open, Brian announced the plans to convert the existing rehab space within the hospital to 26 private patient beds. This also presents an opportunity to convert existing space — the MS1C unit — into a dedicated orthopedics unit with 15 private beds and a physical therapy area. The most exciting point of Brian’s presentation came in the announcement of possibilities for future buildings on the site across the street. These could include an expanded Wellness Center and additional outpatient services. We will be sure to keep you up-to-date on these plans as they are confirmed.

Heather Procaccino, Director of Development & Major Gifts, wrapped up the meeting by informing Ambassador Circle members that the Foundation has nearly met fundraising goals for 2014; thanking them for their support. Heather also announced priorities for fiscal year 2015 which will support continuing and new renovation projects at St. Mary including Labor & Delivery/NICU, conversion of the inpatient rehab unit, and the MS1C inpatient orthopedic unit.

While it is true we have state-ofthe-art facilities and equipment, it is our people who truly make the difference. That is why for the first two weeks in May, Nurses’ Week and Hospital Week respectively, we take the time to celebrate and say thanks. In the midst of the normal hustle and bustle of St. Mary you will find a number of events — from masses to educational seminars, health screenings to friendly baking competitions and award ceremonies — planned by and for our wonderful colleagues.

Though these events are confined to a specific calendar period each year, we appreciate the compassion and dedication shown every day by all of our St. Mary Colleagues. Thank you for all that you do!

n the evening of Wednesday, March 5th, The St. Mary Foundation invited a group of donors and friends to an educational introduction to St. Mary’s array of Heart & Vascular services followed by a Transcatheter / Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) panel discussion and Q&A session with several leading physicians on our Cardiovascular / Cardiothoracic team.

The program began with a brief video recounting the life-saving events that took place at St. Mary when Lambertville, NJ resident, Loran Lobdell, a woman in her 40’s, went into cardiac arrest while on the phone with her boyfriend, Michael Matturro.

After the video, Dr. Richard Leshner gave an overview of St. Mary’s Heart & Vascular services.

A TAVR panel discussion took place with the following St. Mary physicians taking turns explaining this advanced procedure and taking questions from the audience: Dr. Rakesh Shah, Dr. Dave Drucker, Dr. Anand Haridas, Dr. George Heyrich, and Dr. Todd Nixon.

St. Mary is proud to be the first hospital in Bucks County to perform Transcatheter / Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). For patients who are either at high risk or too sick for open-heart surgery, TAVR may be an alternative. This less invasive procedure was approved by the FDA in November,

Quick thinking on his part, the aid of an experienced EMS squad, and the fortunate intervention of Dr. George Heyrich, brought Loran to St. Mary from another local hospital that was not adequately equipped to deal with her situation.

Assessment of Loran's condition began before she was put in the ambulance and was communicated to the medical staff at St. Mary allowing the Heart & Vascular team to be prepared for her arrival.

Loran was immediately taken to the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and a team of physicians and nurses were able to save her life. Therapeutic Hypothermia equipment was used after the Cath Lab procedure to lower Loran's body temperature and is credited with saving her neurological brain function. Loran and Michael were in attendance at the evening's event. Less than five months after her frightening experience, Loran feels better than ever and is grateful for the spectacular care she received at St. Mary.

2011 and allows the aortic valve to be replaced with a new valve while the heart is still beating.

Seven percent of our population over the age of 65 suffers from some form of severe aortic stenosis. Severe aortic stenosis is a narrowing of the aortic valve that restricts the normal blood flow. Eventually, the heart gets weaker, increasing the risk of heart failure.

Our esteemed panel answered audience questions that ranged from advanced procedural inquiries to concerns about developing heart disease to the financial/insurance implications of the procedure.

OUtreaCh bUrNINg rUbber IN the FIght agaINSt CaNCer Fifth year for kickstart motorcycle ride

F

or the fifth consecutive year, hundreds of motorcycles and riders rumbled into the St. Mary Medical Center parking lot with Enrique “Rico” Lopez leading the pack. This annual event, the Kickstart Cancer Run, was organized by Lopez as a fundraiser for the St. Mary Regional Cancer Center.

The ride begins and ends at the Kickstart Saloon in Philadelphia with a stop at St. Mary in the middle to present representatives from St. Mary with a check for the Cancer Center. While the riders took a refreshment break, Dr. Todd Flannery of Princeton Radiation Oncology and Jeanette Bernacki, Director of the Cancer Center, thanked Rico, his family, and friends, for their support. The funds they raise each year help provide care for thousands of patients in our community.

Including $3,650 from this year’s run, the Kickstart Cancer Run has raised over $31,000 for St. Mary. In recognition and appreciation of the group’s commitment, compassion, and support, a room in the Oncology Unit has been named in their honor. The plaque inscribed “Patient Oncology Room in honor of the Kickstart Tavern Run & Enrique Lopez” was shown to the group and installed shortly after the event.

After a few remarks from Rico, he and the riders mounted their motorcycles and roared off down 413.

Family gathers to remember and celebrate Marita adamson

F

or fifty of her seventy-two years, Marita Adamson was a resident of Bucks County. During her lifetime, she accrued many titles: daughter, sister, wife, mother to nine children, grandmother to eighteen, great-grandmother to one, aunt and godmother, teacher, den mother, troop leader, friend, and more. She was many different things to many different people who loved and supported her through a difficult battle with cancer, and who miss her dearly. Marita passed away on October 23, 2013.

In appreciation for the wonderful care she received and in loving tribute to Marita, her husband, Bert, and their family requested donations in her memory be made to the St. Mary Regional Cancer Center.

When contributions to St. Mary reach a total of $500 in a loved one’s memory, a plaque bearing their name is ordered for the Wall of Remembrance. When Marita’s plaque arrived, an invitation was extended to her husband and family to join Foundation staff as it was installed.

Kat O’Connor, Manager of Annual Giving for the St. Mary Foundation welcomed a small crowd of Marita’s family on March 17th to remember her life and see her name installed permanently on the Wall of Remembrance. She thanked them all for coming and for thinking of others during a time of their own great need. Mr. Adamson was then asked to step forward and place his wife’s plaque into the display. Afterward, Father Raju Pilla of the St. Mary Spiritual Care department, who had provided spiritual comfort and guidance during Marita’s many hospital stays, led the family in prayer and offered a blessing.

Princeton. Excitement bubbled over as fans shouted out their horses’ names and jumped for joy as California Chrome, the evening’s favorite to win, crossed the finish line in first place. All participants holding a race card for a horse that won, placed or showed had a choice of prizes generously donated by our Race Sponsor, The Endoscopy Center; The St. Mary Foundation, McCafferty Auto Group, Steve Juris Leasing, and Margiotti & Kroll Pediatrics.

Guests danced the night away to a wide range of musical selections by The Infernos, and took part in an extensive silent auction that helped raise additional funds for the renovation of St. Mary’s Labor & Delivery and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). These updates will allow St. Mary to provide the highest level of medical care for our tiniest and most vulnerable patients. In total, more than $105,000.00 in Gala proceeds will go toward these renovations.

The evening proved to be quite colorful and had a fun, energetic vibe as the majority of partygoers took advantage of the more casual “Derby dress code,” and arrived dressed for the part — women in beautifully decorated hats and men in their seersucker and bowties.

It’s curtains up as supporters gather for a private tour of advanced, first in bucks County rehab services

n Wednesday evening, May 14, the Foundation hosted a sneak preview of the St. Mary Rehabilitation Hospital. Scheduled to open later this month, the facility is the first of its kind in Bucks County.

Greg Wozniak, President and CEO of St. Mary Medical Center welcomed the nearly 100 community supporters assembled in the main indoor dining room of the new facility. The new Rehabilitation Hospital is a joint venture with Centerre Healthcare Corporation.

CEO, Pat Foster, was on hand to address the group, highlighting St. Mary’s history of excellence in delivering rehabilitation service that will only continue and grow with the new hospital. Pat was happy to announce Lisa Haney as CEO of the St. Mary Rehabilitation Hospital. In addition to introducing the administrative and clinical staff of the hospital, Lisa spoke to the expanded capability of St. Mary to begin caring for patients who, before, had to be referred elsewhere. Patients with brain and spine injuries, strokes, amputations, and other medically complex conditions will now have the ability to undergo rehabilitation close to home; reducing stress and strain not only for the patients but their families as well. Chairman of the St. Mary Board of Directors, Frank Guarrieri, shared a brief history of the process from purchasing the land, to planning, groundbreaking, and finally completing construction of the beautiful new space in which everyone now stood and how excited and proud he and the rest of the Board were to be involved. Frank introduced Co-Medical Directors of the St. Mary Rehabilitation Hospital, Dr. Guillermo Bernal and Dr.William Bonner, who spoke briefly to the significant impact the St. Mary Rehabilitation Hospital will have on the Bucks County community. Guests were then divided into groups for staff-led tours of the hospital.

Guests were given up-close views of the patient rooms, which are each single-bed with private baths, as well as the main therapy gym

and other specialized rehabilitation areas. They were also shown demonstrations of several pieces of high-tech equipment that will be used in patient care. Some equipment was available for guests to try out themselves and many gladly volunteered.

Guests and staff alike were thrilled to see everything the new St. Mary Rehabilitation Hospital has to offer.

Just under two weeks later, on Tuesday, May 27th St. Mary staff, board members, and members of the community celebrated the official ribbon cutting at the Rehabilitation Hospital. Prior to program remarks, the building and the hands of its employees were blessed by St. Mary Chaplain, Fr. Raju Pilla.

Afterward, light fare and tours were offered to all in attendance. Later in the evening, neighbors from the houses surrounding the Rehabilitation Hospital were invited to see the finished facility they had watched being constructed over the past year. They also were able to ask questions and hear the preliminary plans for what will be built on the remaining land.

With the tours and events completed, the facility was prepared to accept its first patients. In order to complete the accreditation process, both the Rehabilitation Hospital and the inpatient rehabilitation unit at St. Mary will operate simultaneously for the month of June. After this thirty day period, the inpatient unit at the medical center will be closed and remodeled into private patient rooms.

n Wednesday June 18th a group of students that participated in a Computer skills levelone class, presented projects they have completed.

They also discussed the importance of the program in their lives and the new pathways it has created for them. Basic computer skills used every day at home, in school and at work, were unfamiliar to all of these students when they started the program. For non-native English language speakers, this creates a challenging learning environment.

All of the students credit their teacher Mrs. Shoba for her patience, dedication, kindness and skill in teaching them basic computer competencies.

On watch at Mg2 telemetry

ouise Shetzline was admitted to St. Mary on March 17, 2014. Both she and her husband, John, were so impressed with the great care provided by our colleagues on the MG2 Telemetry unit. Once Louise was home and settled, she and John decided to make a contribution to the St. Mary Foundation recognizing the exceptional service of their Guardian Angels. Before the envelope could be mailed, Mr. and Mrs. Shetzline found themselves back at St. Mary; this time with John as the patient. As luck would have it, he wound up on MG2 just a few doors down from the room Louise had occupied less than two weeks before. Once again, the Shetzlines received outstanding care and attention from colleagues on this unit.

Now with a few more “angels” to mention, Mr. and Mrs. Shetzline sent their gift to the Foundation office. Six colleagues were presented with Guardian Angel pins and certificates for their roles in caring for both Mr. and Mrs. Shetzline. Two additional MG2 colleagues were also separately honored by patients as Guardian Angels for their extraordinary work.

On completion, the students will have the essential skills most of us take for granted; using Microsoft Word® and Excel® and using proper letter and report structure. All the adults were so proud of what they have learned and were appreciative of this opportunity. It’s an important program that packs a big punch and has ripple effects way beyond the classroom.

The program gives hundreds of low income immigrant community members a life-line to a better life.

“We feel honored to have helped support the development of this valuable program and to have been invited to visit it in action. We were so impressed with the sense of pride clearly evident in all of the students as they shared their successes and projects with us. Learning how to use a computer is a requirement for integration into our culture and becoming marketable for employment. We commend the staff at St. Mary and the Family Resource Center for their vision and commitment to providing opportunities such as the computer lab to residents in need in our community.”

The annual St. Mary Colleague Giving Campaign will kick off this year on September 3rd from 11:30am – 2pm and 5:00pm – 6:30pm in the cafeteria. Stop by to make a pledge, have some snacks, and pick up your campaign gift. Committee representatives will also be in the cafeteria from 11:30am – 2:00pm every Friday until October 17th. always on the gO raising funds thru FUN! “SprINg INtO FaShION ShOw” The Community League’s first “Spring into Fashion” show took place on Thursday, April 3, at Spring Mill Manor. The event was presented by The Endoscopy Center. The first part of the evening featured a cocktail hour where clothes from the Community League’s Thrift Shop were informally modeled by St. Mary colleagues. There were also sales by Hi-Ho Silver and beautiful gift baskets for guests to win.

legacy and 1973 Society members step up to the plate

ay 8th started as a rainy, gray day.

Luckily, the storm clouds cleared in time for the St. Mary Foundation’s annual Trenton Thunder event honoring members of the 1973 and Legacy Societies. Just over sixty guests enjoyed an evening of food, drink and baseball as the Trenton Thunder took on the Reading Fightin’ Phills. As the game reached the top of the 4th inning, Foundation VP, John Marcy thanked everyone for coming and for their support of the St. Mary mission. John then turned the microphone over to Lisa Haney, CEO of the St. Mary Rehabilitation Hospital.

Lisa gave an overview of the services the facility will offer and answered questions from the audience. An invitation was extended to everyone in attendance for the official ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony of the facility on May 27th. After the presentation, guests enjoyed the remainder of the game including a visit by Boomer, the Trenton Thunder’s mascot, and a post-game fireworks display.

Familiar St. Mary faces served as male models — Greg Wozniak, Dr. Gary Zimmer, Jim Gentile, Harry Meyers, and Dr. Baber Ghauri. They wore clothes from the Men’s and Boy’s Shop in Huntingdon Valley. Professional female models also strutted their stuff wearing clothing from Chico’s in Langhorne and Berta Sawyer in Huntingdon Valley. St. Mary therapy dogs modeled outfits from Dogs & Cats Rule in Newtown; children wore clothing from Periwinkle Place in Lahaska.

Yola O’Kane, Spring into Fashion chair, says, “It was a really fun, special fashion show. We enjoyed a delicious dinner, followed by singing, dancing, and lots of laughter. We’re already planning next April’s event!”

eaSter egg hUNt Members of the Community League hosted this spring’s Easter Egg Hunt on Wednesday, April 16. The egg hunt is an annual tradition where children from the St. Mary Child Development Center visit with the Easter Bunny in the Cloister Garden. Colleagues and patients in the medical center enjoyed watching the youngsters happily scamper about finding the hidden treasures.

Out and about trip to NyC on april 26 New yOrk CIty: gOUrMet MarketS tOUr The Community League had a really fun, informative, interesting time on their trip to New York City on Saturday, April 26. A full bus of 54 passengers made its first stop at Zabar’s, Citarella, and Wayfair Markets on the Upper West End. Then there was time to enjoy lunch and shopping at the many wonderful

Regional Cancer Center. This year the amount was more than $18,000! St. Mary doctors, nurses, colleagues, and volunteers spent the day welcoming shoppers and bagging groceries in support of this annual effort. In addition, there were prize raffles, health screenings, and distribution of informative literature.

Out and about trip to winterthur on May 15 OUtStaNdINg dOwNtON abbey exhIbIt Thirty-four travelers began the day with snacks and a trivia quiz during the bus ride to historic Winterthur. They then enjoyed a tram tour of the beautiful gardens that were bursting with color as the dogwoods, viburnum, rhododendrons, and azaleas were in full bloom. Next, guests enjoyed an array of elegant rarely-seen rooms in the mansion that had been used by the duPonts for entertaining.

restaurants in Eataly. Shoppers made their last stop at Chelsea Market. Everyone had been invited to bring coolers to store purchases from markets along the way. Travelers seemed to really appreciate the beautiful weather and many friends who enjoyed the trip led by Denis Chiappa from Carlow Cookery.

Trip-goers then were hosted by a docent through the tour of costumes from the PBS hit series “Downton Abbey.” This original exhibition of exquisite designs has approximately 40 historically inspired costumes from the show. These were displayed and supplemented by photographs and vignettes inspired by the fictional program and by the real-life at Winterthur. Lunch was enjoyed at the Buckley Tavern immediately following the tours.

teeN VOlUNteer SChOlarShIp lUNCheON On Monday, June 2, Community League cabinet members welcomed St. Mary teen volunteer $1,000 scholarship winners to a delicious luncheon prepared by the St. Mary catering department. The teens had all volunteered a minimum of 200 hours and had written essays about their work at the medical center. Families were invited to attend, and everyone enjoyed hearing about the students’ activities and college plans.

Based on their ages, they are able to receive an annuity rate of 5 percent, which means that they will receive $1,000 each year for the remainder of their lives.
