It­is­a­pleasure­to­be­the­Foundation­Board­Chair­during­this­exciting­time­of­rapid­change and­growth.­­My­experience­as­a­St.­Mary­donor­began­rather­unconventionally.­­As­a­local businessperson­and­community­supporter,­my­heartstrings­were­firmly­tied­to­children’s charities­in­our­community.­­So­when­I­was­initially­approached­by­members­of­the­Foundation for­a­gift­to­St.­Mary,­I­did­not­feel­an­immediate­connection.

Two­months­after­that­initial­meeting,­I­was­diagnosed­with­Lymphoma­—­a­form­of­cancer­—­and­all­of­a­sudden everything­changed.­­As­most­people­do­with­a­life-threatening­illness,­I­received­a­second­opinion­at­a­big­city hospital­where­I­was­referred­back­to­St.­Mary­because­they­recommended­the­same­protocol.­­I­immediately knew­that­I­belonged­at­St.­Mary­and­would­receive­the­best­possible­care­in­my­back­yard.

It­was­right­then­that­I­made­the­commitment­directly­to­my­oncologist,­“If­I­get­through­this­alive,­I­will­do everything­in­my­power­to­not­only­financially­support­hospital­programs,­but­I­will­also­be­an­ardent­advocate for­St.­Mary­and­help­you­raise­even­more­money.”

It­is­my­firm­belief­that­it­is­our­responsibility­as­members­of­the­Bucks­County­community­to­rally­together and­do­all­that­we­can­to­ensure­that­no­one­will­have­to­go­far­to­get­the­exceptional­healthcare­that­they NEED.­­This­is­why­my­entire­family­also­supports­St.­Mary­so­generously.­­Years­ago,­my­sister’s­husband­spent months­receiving­cancer­treatment­thousands­of­miles­from­home­to­utilize­the­same­cutting-edge­equipment and­treatment­plan­that­is­now­available­here­at­St.­Mary­due­to­donations­from­local­families­and­businesses.

I­have­had­the­privilege­of­shaking­the­hands­of­people­who­survived­illness­and­trauma­as­a­direct­result­of­the facilities­and­technology­that­are­supported­by­our­philanthropy.­­There is no greater feeling than knowing that we help shape the future of our community hospital and continue to build it into the world class healthcare facility that attracts the most qualified and talented medical personnel who save lives and heal our friends, relatives, and neighbors.

Right­now­there­is­tremendous­pressure­on­hospitals­due­to­new­healthcare­initiatives,­so­the­need­for­ philanthropy­is­greater­than­ever.­­I­look­forward­to­working­together,­and­I­encourage­you­to­either­become or­remain­involved­through­your­time,­expertise,­or­financial­support.

ST. MARY iS GROWiNG CONT. provider­of­maternity­services­in­Bucks­County.­­ As­many­hospitals­in­the­area­have­closed­their­ obstetrics­units,­St.­Mary­is­experiencing­a­significant­ increase­in­the­demand­for­quality­maternity­care.

More­than­2,000­expectant­mothers­chose­to­bring their­babies­into­the­world­in­the­comfort­and­care of­St.­Mary­Medical­Center­last­year.­­By­the­end­of­ this­year,­that­number­is­expected­to­reach­2,500­ or­more.

With­the­Emergency­Department­construction­ complete­and­the­Rehabilitation­Hospital­well­ underway,­St.­Mary­is­preparing­to­begin­the­next, much-needed­project­to­help­meet­the­growing­ demand­for­obstetric­care.­­The­$4.3­million­Labor and­Delivery/Neonatal­Intensive­Care­Unit­Renovation Project­will­address­changes­in­medical­equipment and­technology­that­will­allow­St.­Mary­to­provide the­highest­level­of­care­in­the­most­efficient­setting.

Great­care­has­been­taken­ensure­that­no­disruptions­in­quality­or­service­will­occur­during­the­ 12-month­construction­period.

The­renovated­unit­will­offer­increased­privacy­and comfort­with­the­creation­of­two­separate­triage rooms,­each­with­a­private­bathroom.­­A­dedicated nurses’­station­will­be­located­directly­outside­these rooms­for­increased­ability­to­monitor­and­respond to­patient­needs.­­Delivery­space­will­be­increased­to eight­large,­private­birthing­suites­and­two­specially-

designed­recovery­rooms.­­Consideration­has­also been­given­for­family­comfort.­­Common­areas­and lounges­will­be­completely­redesigned­and­include­a new­refreshment­station.

The­start­of­a­new­life­is­certainly­a­time­of­joy­and celebration.­­However,­it­can­also­be­a­frightening­ experience,­especially­when­mother­and­child­have special­medical­conditions­or­face­a­premature­ delivery.­­Since­1989­St.­Mary­has­offered­the­exceptional­skill­of­board-certified­neonatologists,­physicians specially­trained­in­high-risk­newborn­care,­and­nurses­fully­trained in­neonatal­medicine­in­our­Level­II Neonatal­Intensive­Care­Unit (NICU).­­These­compassionate­ professionals­provide­not­only­vital care,­but­also­the­answers­to­any questions­that­concerned­parents may­have­regarding­their­baby’s health.­­The­NICU­will­also­be­ undergoing­renovation­to­optimize the­healing,­comfort­and­privacy­for our­most­vulnerable­patients­while maximizing the­critical­interaction with­their­parents­and­families.

Emergency Department colleagues raised more than $35,000 during the Colleague Giving Campaign

or­many­years,­the­St.­Mary­Foundation­has­conducted­the­annual­Colleague­Giving­Campaign­at­the hospital­and­all­off-campus­locations.­­During­the­campaign­period,­typically­lasting­six­to­eight­weeks, colleagues­are­encouraged­to­make­contributions­to­support­the­needs­of­the­hospital.­­Through­ bi-weekly­payroll­deductions,­as­well­as­one-time­gifts,­colleagues­designate­the­area­within­St.­Mary­ they­would­like­to­support.­­The­campaign­is­organized­by­a­committee­of­colleagues­representing­a­ variety­of­departments­throughout­St.­Mary.­­Each­year­they­select­a­new­slogan­and­design­for­the­campaign that­includes­photos­and­quotes­from­fellow­St.­Mary­colleagues.­­The­committee­also­organizes­pledge­ collection­events­for­the­various­work­shifts­and­locations.

As­St.­Mary­embarked­upon­its­capital­campaign­to expand­the­Emergency­Department­in­2010,­the­ annual­Colleague­Giving­Campaign­was­aligned­with these­plans.­­Rather­than­sign­up­for­a­single­year­ of­support,­colleagues­were­given­the­opportunity to­make­a­two-year­pledge­to­the­Expansion.­­ Colleagues,­especially­those­working­within­the Emergency­Department,­were­excited­to­have­a­ direct­impact­on­the­project­that­would­help­St.­ Mary­touch­the­lives­of­thousands­each­year­seeking urgent­medical­care.­­The­collective­effort­of­all­ St.­Mary­colleagues­in­raising­nearly­$40,000­for­the Expansion­during­this­two­year­campaign­was­recognized­with­a­room­naming­opportunity.­­Two­plaques reading­“Emergency­Department­Staff­Lounge­made possible­through­the­generosity­of­St.­Mary­Medical Center­Colleagues”­were­installed­on­October­22­ as­the­final­phase­of­the­Expansion­was­celebrated.

These­signs,­and­the­areas­they­identify,­will­serve­as a­permanent­representation­of­the­support­that helped­make­this­new­space­possible.

In­addition­to­the­Emergency­Department­Expansion, Colleague­Giving­Campaign­funds­have­been­used­to support­the­recent­Surgical­Expansion­project,­as well­as­provide­ongoing­nursing­education,­purchase emergency­open­heart­surgical­instruments­and­a pharmacy­Auto­Tablet­counter.­­Future­projects­that will­be­supported­include­renovations­to­the­St.­Mary Labor­&­Delivery/NICU­unit­and­Cancer­Center,­as well­as­the­purchase­of­an­electronic­medical­records system­for­Community­Ministries­in­Bensalem.

This­year­marked­a­very­special­40th­anniversary­for St.­Mary­as­well­as­an­incredibly­significant­milestone for­Colleague­Giving.­­Between­September­4­and­ October­22,­more­than­650­colleagues­pledged­a total­of­nearly­$140,000.­­Combined­with­previous campaign­totals,­St. Mary colleagues have raised more than $1 Million! A­very­special­thank­you­to­ all­colleagues­who­generously­gave­back­to­help­ St.­Mary­move­forward...toward­forty­more­years­ of­excellence­in­healthcare.

Music to fill the soul and uplift the spirit of chapel visitors

aving­a­sick­loved­one­or­experiencing­their loss­in­the­hospital­can­be­physically­and emotionally­draining.­­Kay­Hendrickson knows­firsthand­how­the­chapel­at­St.­Mary Medical­Center­can­be­a­place­of­solace­ and­reflection­on­such­occasions.

Kay­and­Robert­Hendrickson­were­happily­married for­fifty-three­years.­­They­were­proud­of­their­family and­enjoyed­spending­time­with­their­children,­Bruce and­his­wife,­Nancy;­Kimberlea­and­her­husband, Thomas;­as­well­as­their­three­wonderful­grandchildren­Chelsea,­Ryan­and­Conor.­Robert­spent­many years­involved­with­the­Free­and­Accepted­Masons, and­the­International­Union­of­Operating­Engineers.

He­was­an­avid­pond­and­koi­fish­enthusiast,­showcasing­his­calming,­serene­hobby­in­their­home’s backyard­for­all­to­enjoy.

Robert’s­health­took­a­turn­and­he­found­himself fighting­a­courageous­battle­with­cancer.­­His­illness required­frequent­trips­to­the­hospital­as­well­as­the need­for­hospice­care.­­On­October­26,­2011,­he passed­away­at­St.­Mary­Medical Center,­surrounded by­his­loving­family.­­Though­she­knew­he­was­free from­the­pain­and­suffering­his­illness­had­caused,­ Kay­felt­a­sudden­and­significant­absence­in­her­ spirit­immediately­after­his­passing.­

honor­his­memory.­­Fr.­Raju­asked­Kay­if­there­was any­way­to­better­honor­Robert­than­by­helping­ others­facing­circumstances­similar­to­her­own.­ She­agreed­but­was­unsure­how­she­could­accomplish­such­a­thing.­It­was­then­that­her­attention­was drawn­to­the­silence­in­the­chapel.­­There­was­no music;­the­organ­was­broken.­ Kay­realized­the­peace­she­felt­in­the­chapel­could­be magnified­and­shared­with­many­others­through­the addition­of­spiritually­uplifting­music.­­She­decided that­as­a­tribute­to­Robert,­she­would­replace­the chapel’s­organ.­­With­Kay’s­financial­contribution,­the assistance­of­Spiritual­Care­and­Foundation­staff,­and two­volunteer­organists,­a­new­instrument­was­ selected­and­purchased.

Based­on­features­designed­to­enhance­the­chapel experience,­a­brand­new­Rodgers­Organ­Model­558 is­now­in­place­at­St.­Mary.­­This­model­allows­music­ to­be­recorded­and­played­back­during­masses­and throughout­the­day­when­no­organist­is­available­to play­in­person.­­Father­Raju­blessed­both­Kay­and­the instrument­upon­its­installation.­­A­plaque­which reads:­“In­loving­memory of­Robert­Hendrickson” was­permanently­attached.

She­made­her­way­to­the­chapel­for­a­quiet­moment alone­to­pray.­­Gazing­at­the­stained­glass­and­religious imagery,­Kay­began­to­feel­a­calm­not­unlike­staring into­one­of­her­husband’s­ponds.­­Kay­felt­as­if­he wasn’t­gone­at­all;­she­felt­Robert­all­around­her­in the­chapel.

Kay­spoke­with­St.­Mary­Chaplain,­Fr.­Raju­Pilla,­ and­Spiritual­Care­Administrator,­Richard­Brochu,­ to­share­how­the­soothing­ambience­of­the­chapel aided­her­during­this­difficult­time.­­She­was­moved­ by­the­exceptional­care­the­St.­Mary­staff­provided­ to­her­husband­and­wished­to­do­something­to

Kay­is­happy­to­have­been able­to­make­a­contribution­through­which­her husband­will­be­remembered­and­many­St.­Mary patients­and­visitors­can find­joy.­­A­memorial­Mass was­said­for­Robert­on October­26th­and­included beautiful­music­thanks­to Kay’s­most­generous­ memorial­contribution.

rowing­up­in­Northeast­Philadelphia,­Penny Benz­was­raised­with­a­strong­work­ethic and­sense­of­self-reliance.­­Throughout­her working­career­she­had­always­been­ employed­in­spite­of­lay-offs­and­mergers around­her.­­Then­the­“Great­Recession”­hit,­and­she lost­her­job.­­Even­with­her­wide­network­of­industry contacts,­Penny­was­unemployed­for­three­years,­and during­that­three-year­period­Penny­became­very­ill while­taking­care­of­her­94­year-old­mother.

When­her­health­insurance­ran­out­in­January­of 2010,­Penny­tried­to­purchase­other­insurance,­but was­rejected­by­two­carriers­because­she­was­taking medication­and­was­considered­to­have­a­pre-existing condition.­­Penny­was­distraught.­­She­applied­for­PA Fair­Care,­a­program­that­went­into­effect­in­2010 which­admits­people­with­pre-existing­conditions.

She­was­accepted­in­August­with­coverage­starting­ in­September.­ However,­Penny­had­been­experiencing­trouble­ swallowing­and­breathing­as­well­as­a­sore­throat.

She­went­to­her­doctor­who­treated­her­with­ medication,­but­the­infections­kept­returning.­­She was­unable­to­sleep­or­eat­properly­because­she­felt like­she­was­choking­and­couldn’t­breathe.­­Finally,­in July­2010,­the­pain­became­too­intense,­and­after going­to­a­Mini­Clinic,­Penny­went­to­the­St.­Mary Medical­Center­Emergency­Room.­

Overcoming adversity and “paying it Forward”

“It­was­the­best­decision­I­made­during­this­entire­ordeal.­­My­mother­had­a­knee­replacement­there­in 2004­and­we­were­so­pleased­with­the­care­she­received­I­knew­St.­Mary­was­the­place­to­go.”­­She­explained her­circumstances­to­the­registration­person­who­then­took­the­time­to­explain­the­Financial­Assistance­ Program­at­St.­Mary.­­She­qualified­for­100%­coverage­for­the­hospital­visits,­though­Penny­would­still­be­ responsible­for­her­doctor­visits,­and­medications.­ A­CT­scan­revealed­a­mass­behind­her­tonsil­and­the­Emergency­Room­doctor­sent­her­to­an­ENT­specialist resulting­in­a­recommendation­for­immediate­surgery.­ Penny­never,­ever­thought­she­would­be­in­a­position­to­need­charity­care.­She­always­worked­and­supported herself­while­taking­care­of­her­mother.­­She­was­humbled­and­grateful­that­St.­Mary­had­a­program­to­help those­who­were­in­financial­trouble.­­The­program­was­a­life-saver­for­her­and­when­she­recovered,­she vowed­to­give­back­to­the­place­that­was­there­when­she­needed­help­the­most.­­“I­was­lucky­I­had­family­& friends­who­helped­me­financially,­and­I­had­St.­Mary­to­help­me­with­my­medical­care.­­Once­I­finally­went back­to­work,­I­wanted­to­make­a­donation­to­the­St.­Mary­Emergency­Department.­­I­wanted­to­help someone­else­who­needs­assistance.­­I­wanted­to­pay­back­my­friend­the­money­she­lent­to­me­but­she­& her­husband­suggested­I­combine­it­with­my­donation­to­St.­Mary.­­That­way­we­could­help­more­people­in our­community.­­‘Pay­it­Forward,’­she­said.­­That­is­what­I­wanted­to­do­and­to­inspire­others­to­do­the­same so­I­made­a­1973­Society­gift­to­St.­Mary.”­

She was humbled and grateful that St. Mary had a program to help those who were in financial trouble.

Watching Over premature and Special-Needs babies

abies­born­prematurely­or­with­special­ medical­needs­are­in­very­good­hands­in­ St.­Mary’s­Neonatal­Intensive­Care­Unit (NICU).­­Not­only­do­the­physicians­and nurses­provide­exceptional­medical­care­to our­youngest,­most­vulnerable­patients,­they­also work­diligently­to­allay­the­fears­and­anxieties­of­the­ babies’­parents­and­families.­ In­support­of­the­programs­and­services­of­St.­Mary, Ms.­Dolores­McIlhenny, a­volunteer­at­the­hospital, made­a­contribution­honoring­four­NICU­nurses­as Guardian­Angels.­­“So­blessed­are­these­needy­babies to­benefit­from­the­incomparable­care­given­by­these dedicated,­devoted,­loving­professionals.­­I've­seen them­in­action­and­I­salute­them­all!”­ Congratulations­Patricia­Crocker,­Kathleen­Hamilton, Paige­Jodzio,­and­Valarie­Moore.­­Through­your­work you­truly­make­a­difference­in­the­lives­of­patients and­their­families.

remember­everything­about­November­14,­2005.­­It­was­a­Monday.­­My­gardening­club­was­out­decorating­a­home­for­the­holidays.­­The­weather­was­crisp­and­clear,­the­sun­was­shining­when­I­fell­from­a ladder,­shattering­my­left­leg.­­As­I­lay­there­on­the­floor,­in­excruciating­pain,­awaiting­the­ambulance, feelings­came­all­at­once.­­I­was­angry­at­myself­for­climbing­the­ladder,­upset­and­in­pain­from­the­fall, scared­that­I­wouldn’t­ever­be­the­same.

Thankfully,­I­was­taken­to­the­St.­Mary­Emergency­Department,­stabilized,­given­pain­medication,­and­ scheduled­for­surgery­to­reassemble­the­fragments­of­my­leg.­­I­awoke­after­the­operation­to­discover­the full­extent­of­my­injury:­a­rod,­plate,­8­screws,­surgical­glue,­and­38­staples.­­Unbelievable!­­Just­four­days after­the­fall,­three­days­after­surgery,­I­was­sent­home­for­six­long­weeks­of­healing.­­Two­months­after­my fall,­I­was­back­at­St.­Mary­to­begin­physical­therapy.­­From­January­until­May,­I­worked­with­therapists­in outpatient­rehabilitation.­­My­last­therapy­session,­May­26,­2006,­brought­feelings­of­both­happiness­and sadness.­­I­was­thrilled­to­be­walking­but­would­miss­the­regular­sessions­with­all­of­the­wonderful­rehab staff.­­Today,­my­injury­is­a­memory­only;­barely­a­scar­and­I­walk­just­as­well­as­ever,­thanks­to­St.­Mary.­ I­had­the­good­fortune­of­having­St.­Mary­close­to­my­home.­­The­exceptional­care­I­received­—­and­the people­who­provided­it­—­brought­St.­Mary­close­to­my­heart.­­I­support­ St.­Mary­to­ensure­everyone­who­comes­here­gets­the­same­ compassionate,­professional,­care.­­I­hope­you­join­me.­

he­St.­Mary­Ambassador­Circle­met­on­ October­18th­at­the­Northampton­Valley Country­Club.­­Members­welcomed­Sharon Reeder,­Manager­of­the­St.­Mary­Family­ Resource­Center­and­Jill­Simon,­MSN,­CRNP, Administrative­Director­of­St.­Mary­Mother­Bachman Maternity­Center,­Children’s­Health­Center,­and Learning­and­Parenting­Centers­to­give­presentations about­their­programs;­all­of­which­are­part­of­ St.­Mary­Community­Ministries.

Ms.­Reeder­began­her­presentation­by­providing background­on­the­Family­Resource­Center.­­Bucks County­is­a­multicultural­community­with­an­increasing number­of­struggling­families­in­need­of­social­ and­economic­assistance.­­Established­in­1998,­the­ St.­Mary­Family­Resource­Center­is­a­place­where these­families­are­given­the­tools­they­need­to­ become­physically,­and­emotionally,­healthy­as­well­ as­self-sufficient.­­These­tools­are­provided­through group­and­individual­health,­general­education­and employment-centered­instruction.­

Clients­can­improve­their­bodies’­strength,­balance, coordination,­and­endurance,­and­reduce­body­fat using­the­equipment­and­classes­at­the­Family­Wellness Center.­­Nutrition­education­for­children­and­adults is­also­available.­­Lessons­for­adults­include­stretching food­budget­dollars,­planning­quick,­healthy­meals, and­keeping­food­safe.­­Kids­learn­about­the­five­food groups,­fixing­healthy­snacks,­and­the­importance­of clean­hands­for­preparing­and­eating­meals.­ Children­and­adult­students­learn­basic­computer skills­and­applications­such­as­Word­and­Excel through­the­Technology­Center.­­Classes­in­basic­ literacy­and­GED­preparation,­ESL,­and­10-week­ citizenship­preparation­courses­are­also­offered­at the­Family­Resource­Center.­­Once­adult­students are­able­to­comprehend­and­communicate­effectively, classes­in­online­job­searches,­resume­writing­and­ interview­skills­are­available­to­help­them­obtain­ gainful­employment.­­The­Supportive­Housing­program also­provides­homeless­families­with­a­place­to­live while­parents­gain­the­skills­and­savings­to­secure­ and­maintain­permanent­housing.

Ms.­Simon­next­informed­the­group­about­the Mother­Bachman­Maternity­Center,­located­just­a few­doors­down­from­the­Family­Resource­Center.

Here­women­receive­a­full­continuum­of­obstetrical services;­prenatal­care,­labor­support,­delivery­ management,­and­postpartum­care­—­in­a­supportive,­ family-focused­environment.­­Transportation­to­ medical­appointments­and­interpretation­services­ for­non-English­speaking­and­hearing­impaired­ patients­are­also­provided­at­Mother­Bachman.­ When­it­is­time,­patients­deliver­their­babies­at­ St.­Mary­Medical­Center­under­the­expert­guidance and­care­of­certified­nurse-midwives­and­obstetricians if­needed.

Immediately­next­door­to­the­Family­Resource­ Center­is­the­St.­Mary­Children’s­Health­Center.

Children­are­seen­here­for­vaccinations,­well­and­sick visits­just­like­any­primary­care­physician’s­office.

However,­the­St.­Mary­Children’s­Health­Center­ offers­a­multitude­of­additional­services­including sports­physicals,­hearing­and­vision­screenings,­lab tests,­growth­and­development­assessments,­specialist and­social­service­referrals,­behavioral­counseling,­as well­as­breastfeeding­support­and­instruction­for­ new­mothers.­­The­Children’s­Health­Center­also­ provides­patients­with­transportation­to­medical­ appointments­and­assists­parents­in­health­insurance and­housing­applications.

Changing the healthcare landscape in bucks County for the better

n­September­26th,­just­over­five­months­after­breaking­ground­on­the­new­Acute­Inpatient­Rehabilitation Hospital,­St.­Mary­welcomed­nearly­forty­members­of­the­community­to­a­forum­on­rehabilitation health.­­All­guests­were­eager­to­hear­how­this­new­hospital­will­change­the­healthcare­landscape­ in­Bucks­County.­­Several­in­attendance­had­firsthand­experience­with­the­existing­inpatient­rehabilitation­unit­and­were­interested­to­discover­how­the­new­facility­will­improve­ the­delivery­of­these­already­exceptional­services.

The­evening­began­with­a­presentation­on­the­physical­building­status.­­Matt­Thrower­from­Nason­Construction shared­various­photos­of­the­construction­progress.­­An­aerial­view­showed­the­steadily­rising­building­as­well­ as­the­surrounding­area;­while­closer-range­photos­detailed­the­materials­and­the­construction­process.­­­

The­next­presenter­to­address­the­group­was­Lisa­Haney,­Executive­Director­of­the­Rehabilitation­Hospital when­it­is­completed­in­the­spring.­­Ms.­Haney­explained­that­in­the­past­two­years,­there­has­been­a­significant growth­in­the­demand­for­the­quality­rehabilitation­services­of­St.­Mary.­­Benchmarked­against­nearly­800­other facilities,­the­current­inpatient­rehabilitation­unit­ranks­within­the­top­four­percent­for­positive­patient­outcomes!

The­new­facility­will­allow­St.­Mary­to­expand­the­delivery­of­this­exceptional­level­of­care­from­31­to­50­ patients.­­In­addition,­it­will­also­increase­St.­Mary’s­capacity­to­provide­a­more­specialized­level­of­care.­Come Summer­2014,­recovering­from­a­stroke,­brain­or­spinal­cord­injury,­or­other­medically­complex­issue­will­no longer­include­traveling­to­the­city­for­rehabilitation­services.­­Specially­trained­staff,­private­rooms,­multiple­ activities­of­daily­living­(ADL)­suites,­indoor­and­outdoor­therapy­space,­and­more­will­be­available­close­to home­to­help­these­patients­return­safely­and­confidently­to­their­own­residences.­ Following­Ms.­Haney’s­presentation,­Co-Medical­Directors­of­St.­Mary’s­Rehabilitation­Unit,­Dr.­Guillermo Bernal­and­Dr.­William­Bonner­opened­the­floor­for­questions.­­Together­they­addressed­such­topics­as­the time­and­consideration­that­went­into­the­planning­of­the­new­hospital­as­well­as­the­average­expected­length of­stay;­several­years­and­two­weeks,­respectively.­­The­doctors­also­discussed­how,­initially,­the­new­rehabilitation

facility­as­well­as­the­inpatient­unit­within­the­hospital­will­be­operating­simultaneously.­­Both­will­remain­operational­in­order­to­ensure­consistent­patient­care while­the­rehabilitation­hospital­undergoes­the­required­survey­process­for­ accreditation­and­certification.

Naturally,­the­audience­was­very­interested­in­what­patients­can­expect­after­ discharge­from­the­inpatient­rehab­setting.­­Kim­Sudac,­Director­of­Therapies­was welcomed­to­explain­the­next­steps­along­the­continuum­of­care.­­After­discharge from­inpatient­rehab,­patients­still­require­significant­rehabilitation­services.­­St. Mary­currently­offers­outpatient­rehabilitation­services­at­two­locations­to­serve the­community;­the­main­campus­and­Cornerstone­(located­near­Oxford­Valley Mall).­­Patients­discharged­from­the­Acute­Rehab­Hospital­will­immediately­begin treatment­in­our­outpatient­programs.­­­As­a­result,­outpatient­rehabilitation­ programs­must­increase­their­capacity­to­care­for­recovering­stroke,­brain­and spine­injury­patients.­­The­same­quality­and­level­of­care­received­in­the­inpatient setting­must­carry­through­to­outpatient.­­With­the­relocation­of­all­inpatient rehab­services­to­the­new­facility,­there­will­be­space­available­to­accommodate the­necessary­private­treatment­areas­and­specialized­equipment­that­will­aid­in the­rehabilitation­process­for­all­diagnoses.­ It­is­the­goal­of­St.­Mary­Medical­Center­not­only­to­treat,­but­also­to­prevent­ illness­and­injuries­in­the­community.­­Post-discharge­support­for­rehabilitation­ patients­including­access­to­resources­such­as­education,­support­groups,­ maintenance­and­wellness­programs­and­community­partnerships­for­the­ prevention­of­further­injury­and­readmission­is­also­provided.

Foundation hosts an in-depth look at the future

n­October­24,­2013­the­Foundation­hosted­a­Forum­on­Maternity­Services and­welcomed­past­patients­to­share­some­exciting­news:­St.­Mary­is­growing;­by­feet...and­toes!­­The­NICU­and­Labor­and­Delivery­Units­are­being prepared­for­a­renovation­and­expansion.­

As­women­in­the­Delaware­Valley­are­faced­with­fewer­options­as­to­where­they can­go­to­receive­quality­obstetric­and­maternity­care,­St.­Mary­remains­committed to­delivering­these­services­right­here­in­Bucks­County.­­Since­January,­St.­Mary has­seen­an­average­increase­of­fifty­deliveries­per­month­and­expects­this­trend to­continue.­­The­renovation­and­expansion­is­taking­place­in­order­to­keep­up with­this­increasing­demand­and­ensure­that­St.­Mary­is­able­to­provide­a­safe, comfortable­delivery­experience­for­every­patient.

Dr.­Jerrold­Snyder,­a­physician­with­Women’s­Specialists­of­Bucks­County,­PC,­ located­at­St.­Mary,­opened­the­presentation­by­sharing­his­history­with­the­ medical­center.­­He­has­seen­many­cases­throughout­his­thirty­years.­He­expressed that­the­skill,­dedication,­and­compassion­of­the­staff­is­what­sets­St.­Mary­apart from­other­hospitals­and­accounts­for­the­exponential­growth­seen­here­since opening­in­1973.­­Dr.­Snyder­then­invited­a­patient,­Stephanie­Brown,­to­share­her story­as­an­example­of­the­excellent­care­provided­at­St.­Mary.

Since January, St. Mary has seen an average increase of fifty deliveries per month and expects this trend to continue through the end of the year.

In­August,­2012­Stephanie­was­28-weeks­along­in­her­first­pregnancy­and­at­ St.­Mary­for­a­routine­appointment.­During­this­visit,­she­received­devastating news;­her­baby­did­not­have­a­heartbeat.­­She­was­brought­to­the­labor­and­ delivery­unit­where,­totally­unprepared­to­do­so,­she­gave­birth­to­her­stillborn child.­Dr.­Snyder,­the­nurses­and­staff­walked­her­through­every­step­of­the­ difficult­process.­­Almost­one­year­to­the­day,­Stephanie­was­back­in­the­St.­Mary labor­and­delivery­unit­where­she­gave­birth­to­a­healthy­baby­boy.­­Though­the two­experiences­had­vastly­different­outcomes,­Stephanie­explained­that­the­level of­care­both­times­was­exceptional­and­expressed­her­gratitude­toward­the teams­that­helped­her­through­them.

Dr.­David­DeFilippis,­a­physician­with­Women’s Health­Associates­of­Bucks­County,­and­Chair­of­ Obstetrics­and­Gynecology­at­St.­Mary­next­addressed the­assembled­guests.­­Appearing­before­them­in fresh­green­scrubs,­he­shared­that­just­moments­ before­arriving­he­successfully­delivered­a­baby­and was­almost­unable­to­attend­this­event­as­another patient­was­also­in­active­labor.­Luckily,­his­partner, Dr.­Thomas­O’Malley­was­able­to­take­over­in­the­ delivery­room.­

The­renovation­and­expansion­plans­also­include changes­for­the­Neonatal­Intensive­Care­Unit­at­ St.­Mary.­­Dr.­Prem­Marlapudi,­of­Neonatology­ Associates,­PC;­Director,­Neonatal-Perinatal­Medicine and­Chairman­of­Pediatrics,­was­the­final­physician­to­ address­the­guests,­giving­a­brief­history­of­the NICU.­­Opened­in­1989,­the­Level­II­NICU­at­St. Mary­was­the­first­of­its­kind­in­Bucks­County.­­In­its first­year,­just­thirty-six­babies­required­its­services.

Now­in­its­twenty-fourth­year,­the­St.­Mary­NICU­is­ expecting­to­care­for­160­babies­by­the­end­of­2013.

...dr. deFilippis emphasized that St. Mary is committed to the entire continuum of women’s health.

Dr.­DeFelippis­addressed­how­the­renovation­and­ expansion­will­affect­this­area.­Currently,­the­labor and­delivery­unit­contains­a­semi-private­triage­area with­patients­separated­by­curtains.­­The­new­plan will­increase­patient­privacy­by­dividing­this­area­into two­separate­rooms.­­The­renovation­will­also­increase the­number­of­birthing­suites­to­eight­and­include­two private­recovery­rooms.­­Construction­will­be­completed­in­phases­so­as­to­not­disrupt­care­in­the­unit.

In­addition­to­providing­twenty-four­hour­coverage in­obstetrics,­Dr.­DeFilippis­emphasized­that­St.­Mary is­committed­to­the­entire­continuum­of­women’s health.­­Perinatologists,­gynecological­oncologists, urogynecologists­,­and­reproductive­medicine­specialists­are­among­the­physicians­practicing­at­St.­Mary.­

While­the­current­configuration­of­the­NICU­allows for­critically-important­medical­care­to­be­delivered, it­lacks­the­space­and­privacy­needed­for­parents­ to­bond­with­their­children.­­The­updated­space­ will­include­sufficient­area­for­St.­Mary’s­youngest, most­vulnerable­patients­to­receive­advanced­ medical­care­and­parental­affection­comfortably­ and­simultaneously.

The renovation will take approximately twelve months to complete at an estimated cost of $4.3 million.

hortly­after­their­debut­appearances­this­Spring,­the­Connectors­program­volunteers­were­out­ to­represent­St.­Mary­at­several­community­events­in­August­and­September.­­First­was­the­65th Annual­Middletown­Grange­Fair.­­Staff­from­the­hospital­and­foundation­along­with­volunteer­ ambassadors­worked­together­in­shifts­for­the­five­day­event­that­ran­from­August­14th­through 18th.­­Each­day­the­fair­drew­thousands­of­visitors,­many­of­whom­stopped­by­for­information­or to­share­stories­of­their­experiences­with­St.­Mary.­­Visitors­were­also­encouraged­to­enter­a­drawing­to win­a­St.­Mary­prize.­­Two­lucky­guests­were­drawn­at­random­winning­a­free­massage­at­the­Holistic­ Center­and­two­tickets­to­the­Community­League­Kitchen­and­Garden­Tour­on­October­13th.

uring­twenty-two­informative­“Town­Hall” meetings­held­between­September­30th­ and­October­22nd,­St.­Mary­colleagues­ were­given­the­opportunity­to­be­part­of­ a­unique­experience–to­help­paint­the­scene with­their­own­hands.­

The­Community­League­recently­decided­that­they would­paint­a­mural­to­enhance­the­ICU­Rooftop Healing­Garden.­­This­garden,­unlike­others­at­St. Mary,­is­a­purely­visual­experience­as­patients,­ colleagues­and­visitors­are­not­able­to­enter,­but­can view­it­from­inside­several­locations­within­the­ hospital.­Interested­colleagues­entered­their­names into­a­drawing­and­five­winners­were­selected.­

Over­the­course­of­several­weeks,­these­colleagues assisted­artist­Sandra­Elliot­to­paint­the­scene.­

Funding healthy Kid-Friendly Meals at home

The goal of this program is simple: to provide food and beverage to children who do not have access to nutritious meals outside of school.

or­many­children­in­Bucks­County,­school­may be­the­only­place­in­which­to­receive­regular, nutritious­meals;­leaving­them­to­go­hungry­on weekends­and­school­holidays.­­For­this­reason, St.­Mary­piloted­the­Backpacks­for­Kids­Program, based­on­the­national­program­of­the­same­name,­in 2012­under­the­coordination­of­Kelly­Pagliei­and­the Parenting­Resource­Center.­­The­goal­of­this­program is­simple:­to­provide­food­and­beverage­to­children who­do­not­have­access­to­nutritious­meals­outside of­school.­­In­the­first­year,­10­families,­totaling­21 children,­were­referred­to­this­program­through­the Bucks­County­Family­Services­Association.­­This­ year,­the­program­was­expanded­to­help­18­families;­ serving­more­than­40­children.

Each­Friday,­students­in­the­Backpack­for­Kids­ program­are­discreetly­given­a­small,­nondescript­ insulated­lunch­bag­with­food­for­meals­over­the weekend­by­the­school­nurse.­­Students­with­ non-school-aged­siblings­will­also­take­food­home­ to­those­children.­­Contents­of­the­bags­include child-appealing­and­easy-to-prepare­meals­with longer­shelf­lives­such­as­peanut­butter,­macaroni­ and­cheese,­fruit­cups,­100%­juice­boxes,­powdered milk­and­pudding­cups.

Through­targeted­outreach­to­areas­of­the­community with­identified­unmet­need­and­a­generous­grant­of $43,875­from­the­W.W.­Smith­Charitable­Trust,­the St.­Mary­Backpacks­for­Kids­program­is­expected­to reach­50-75­families­by­the­end­of­the­school­year; representing­150­children.­­Anticipating­the­demand to­soon­exceed­the­program,­enrollment­expansion is­planned­for­2014.

Easy-to-prepare meals like macaroni and cheese are sent home

The­program­cost­per­child­is­$5­per­weekend­for­42 weekends­during­the­school­year­and­$7­per­week for­summer­weeks.­­The­grant­provides­funds­to cover­weekends­during­the­school­year­and­summer weeks­for­150­children.­­The­grant­also­covers­onetime­cost­that­include­lunch­kits,­which­are­smaller and­easier­to­manage­than­the­backpacks­currently­ in­use,­as­well­as­cups­and­bowls­with­lids­so­children

are­insured­eating­implements­at­home.­­Extended school­breaks­will­be­covered­by­St.­Mary­community benefit­funds­as­well­as­local­organizations’­food­drives.­ The­W.W.­Smith­Trust­issues­grants­for­three­specific purposes­to­organizations­in­Bucks,­Chester, Delaware,­and­Montgomery­Counties,­as­well­as­ the­cities­of­Philadelphia­and­Camden,­NJ:­medical­ research­in­heart­disease,­cancer­and­AIDS;­financial aid­for­full-time­undergraduate­students;­and­food, clothing,­and­shelter­for­children,­families­and­the­ elderly.­­St.­Mary’s­Backpacks­for­Kids­program­is­ extremely­grateful­to­have­been­selected­from among­these­many­worthy­causes­to­receive­these critical­funds.

Colleagues are married and give back to healing environments program

elissa­Lipari­was­attending­La­Salle­University­while­working­ as­a­CNA­in­the­St.­Mary­Oncology­Unit.­At­the­same­time,­Kevin Trolene­was­a­PA­with­Princeton­Brain­and­Spine­Care,­a­neurosurgical­practice­that­operates­at­SMMC.­­As­Melissa­helped­care for­patients­and­studied­to­become­a­nurse,­two­colleagues­were also­thinking­of­her­future...husband!­­With­the­help­of­a­neurosurgeon­and a­physician­assistant,­Melissa’s­colleagues­arranged­for­the­two­ to­meet­one­day­at­the­nurse’s­station.

“Despite­the­first­awkward­introduction,­we­spent­the­next­year­and­a­half falling­in­love;­catching­glances,­small­talk­and­occasionally­coffee­in­the­halls­and units­of­St.­Mary.­­We­sometimes­had­patients­in­common­and­were­always­ impressed­with­the­volunteers,­especially­those­involved­in­the­Healing­ Environments­Program."­ On­September­15,­2013,­Melissa­and­Kevin­were­married.­­They­made­a­ contribution­to­support­the­Healing­Environments­program­and­honor­the place­where­their­journey­together­began.­­“St.­Mary­Medical­Center­will­ always­have­a­special­place­in­my­heart,­not­simply­because­it­is­where­I­met my­husband,­but­because­it­is­truly­the­most­caring,­spiritual­hospital­where I­have­ever­worked.”

plANNEd GiViNG The legacy donor Next door and the Gift That Keeps on Giving

mall­acts­of­charity­performed­over­time­can­make­a­significant­and­lasting­ impact.­­This­was­the­message­Mark­Erhard,­Director­of­Planned­Giving,­ delivered­to­loyal­donors­and­Legacy­Society­members­at­the­Loyalty­Luncheon in­October­with­the­story­of­Jean,­a­former­St.­Mary­patient.

Jean­began­donating­to­the­hospital­in­1993,­an­average­of­$25­per­year­until­she passed­away­in­2005.­­Prior­to­her­passing­Jean­was­thinking­of­St.­Mary­as­she­made her­final­will­and­named­St.­Mary­for­a­charitable­bequest­of­$1,000.­­This­$1,000­ bequest­became­Jean’s­legacy­gift­and,­as­part­of­the­St.­Mary­Endowment­Fund,­ effectively­created­an­“endless­stream­of­annual­gifts”­of­a­similar­or­greater­amount to­her­previous­annual­gifts.­­The­St.­Mary­Endowment­is­invested­for­the­long­term and­yields­a­rate­of­return­more­favorable­than­average­yields.­­It­was­discovered­that there­were­others­like­Jean,­who­during­their­lifetimes­donated­$25­to­$100­each year­and­made­bequests­sizeable­enough­to­continue­this­level­of­giving­for­years­ beyond­their­passing.­­This­“Endowment­Effect”­creates­a­predictable­flow­of­funding that­looks­something­like­this:

The­combination­of­Jean’s­gift,­along­with­ other­similar­contributions,­enhances­our ability­to­make­continuous­investments­in technology­and­new­programs­that­benefit our­community;­like­Transcatheter/Aortic Valve­Replacement­(TAVR).­­This­is­a­new and­innovative,­minimally­invasive­cardiac procedure,­approved­by­the­FDA­in­ November­2011,­and­first­performed­in Bucks­County­at­St.­Mary.­­Dr.­George Heyrich,­Director­of­Interventional­ Cardiology­and­Structural­Heart­Disease, was­invited­to­speak­on­this­new­procedure.

Dr.­Heyrich­reported­that­7%­of­our­population­over­the­age­of­65­suffers­from­some form­of­severe­aortic­stenosis,­or­narrowing­of­the­aortic­valve,­which­restricts normal blood­flow.­­This­condition,­affecting­more­men­than­women,­weakens­the heart­muscle­and­increases­the­risk­of­heart­failure.­­This­very­serious­problem can­ result­in­death­for­patients­of­both­genders­within­two­years­of­diagnosis.­­With­ two­possible­methods­of­utilization,­TAVR­gives­life­saving­options­to­those­patients considered­high­risk­or­too­sick­for­open-heart­surgery­by­replacing­the­problem valve­via­a­catheter­while­the­heart­is­still­beating.
