Nurturing the Family Bond Extensive renovations to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are complete
The entirely new NICU space was designed to enhance the family bonding experience while providing the highly specialized care premature or critically ill newborns require. Six private bays offer a comfortable environment where families can have around the clock access and interaction with their infant. A family sleeping room allows parents to stay nearby even when they need to rest. A private lactation room and sophisticated bottle warming system ensure breast feeding continues even when a mother cannot be onsite. Board-certified neonatologists and nurses trained in neonatal medicine provide leading-edge care to fragile newborns using sophisticated, but appropriately sized, equipment and technology. Every consideration was taken to make an infant’s stay in the NICU as comforting as possible for them and their family.

Donors warm up to ensure breast feeding success
Residents of Bucks County and surrounding Communities took part in a paddle auction at this year's Spring Gala and collectively raised more than $50,000 for the specialized bottle warmers used in the NICU. NICU bottle warmers are used to warm the breast milk mothers express to feed their babies. They hold sterile bottles as well as the syringes used to feed the tiniest of babies who are not yet able to feed from a bottle.

Battling Breast Cancer from all Dimensions
Digital Breast Tomosynthesis has been proven to:
• Increase the detection of invasive breast cancers by 41% • Increase the detection of ALL breast cancers by 29%
• Increase Positive Predictive Value (PPV) for a recall by 49% • Increase PPV for biopsy by 21%
• Decrease the need for additional and unnecessary imaging in women by 15%
3D mammography significantly increases cancer detection
Through generous donor funding, the St. Mary Breast Center is now able to perform 2D mammography as well as Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) or 3D Mammography.
Early detection is the key to positive outcomes and this new unit will provide patients, technologists, and physicians with the latest technology available for breast cancer screening. DBT images the breast in slices, much like a CAT Scan (CT) enabling the radiologist to view the breast in slices and segments creating a 3D rendering that increases the physicians ability to view cancers that would be obscured in traditional 2D mammography.
Superior Elder Care in Bucks County
The final phase of the Expanding on Excellence Campaign expansion and renovations are nearing completion. St. Mary's geriatric-friendly nursing unit, MG3, was the final patient area to undergo major renovations in 2014/2015. This unit is the first of its kind in Bucks County to support the changing needs of an aging population. 26 spacious all-private rooms aim for a home-like atmosphere to create a sense of comfort for patients, family and caregivers.
• The flooring in the renovated unit was picked to prevent shadows, glaring, and reduce tripping hazards.
• Large screen TVs, digital clocks, muted colors and patient lifts in each room was carefully chosen to keep the elder population oriented and safe.
• Hand rails in patient and common rooms help to support patients while walking.
• The carpeting in the halls serves to help prevent falls and reduce noise.

Considered part of the lobby renovation, the Beehive gift shop renovation is now complete! The Beehive Gift shop is a full service gift shop. We carry everything from flowers, balloons, cards and candy to gifts, jewelry clothing accessories baby items and more.
Although the majority of our customers are colleagues, visitors and patients; the Beehive has become a destination shop for community members to stop in even when they are not visiting someone in the hospital. All proceeds from the Beehive go directly to the Community League, which in turn provides support to the Medical Center by funding the healing gardens as well as other needs throughout the hospital.

One of the highlights of the Community League’s annual activities and fund-raising events is the opportunity to award $1000 scholarships to 10 St. Mary teen volunteers. Applicants must work a minimum of 200 hours at St.Mary and submit an essay about their experience at the medical center. Spirit of Nursing is Alive and Well at St. Mary Professional development and recognition to nursing staff for the great care they provide to our patients
The Spirit of Nursing is committed to providing professional development opportunities and recognition to nursing staff for the great care they provide the patients at St. Mary.
The funding pays for nurses to take their certification exams to become certified in their specialty. The cost can be prohibitive so funding from the Spirit of Nursing gives the nursing staff professional develop opportunities to increase their skills to better care for their patients. This past year members of the nursing department from the Operating Room, Telemetry, Critical Care, Oncology, Emergency Nursing, PACU, OB, Gerontology have participated in multiple programs offered online or in a classroom setting. Thanks to the Spirit of Nursing Fund well over half of our nurses acquired professional specially certification.

St. Mary Regional Cancer Center began carrying a number of new wigs in a variety of colors and styles. This is a free service for patients undergoing cancer treatments and experiencing hair loss.
“We are so pleased to partner with the American Cancer Society and offer this service to patients,” said Jeanette Stemen, Oncology Program Director, St. Mary Medical Center,“St. Mary is committed to providing our community with the highest-quality care. That includes advanced technology, as well as the integrated services to promote the healing of body, mind, and spirit.”
The service is available to any woman with a cancer diagnosis, and allows for one free wig per diagnosis.

Teen scholarship winners
In October 2014, St. Mary in partnership with Catholic Social Services and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia opened the Fatima Catholic Outreach Center (Centro Cat贸lico de F谩tima) at the former Our Lady of Fatima parish site on Street Road in Bensalem, PA. At the Fatima Center programs and services are offered that either complement or continue the services St. Mary already offers to the poor and underserved in the area such as a food cupboard, the Greenlight Pantry, Farm to Family program, immigration consultation, ESL & Citizenship classes, ACA benefits screening and enrollment, Strengthening Families Program, Individual Parenting Sessions, Prenatal support, Diaper Bank, Infant Massage, Intro to Preschool, Afterschool Program, Backpacks for Kids Program, Cooking Matters, Pre-teen Leadership Program and Senior Citizens Programs. Last year we received a $15,000 grant from Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to support expansion of the Backpacks for Kids Program which provides meals for children enrolled in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program when they are not in school. This program started with 50 children two years ago and has expanded to more than 500 children in the Lower Bucks County area. Several community groups conducted fundraising events or drives last year in October to support the Breast Health Initiative, St. Mary's outreach program that provides free mammograms to poor or underserved women and other breast cancer programs and services at St. Mary. We are grateful to the Grey Nun Academy in Yardley, St. Maximilian Kolbe School in West Chester and Morrisville Presbyterian Church for their support of these programs.
Trauma Prevention and Education Programs Business community comes together to make a difference for Bucks County kids
Earlier this year, St. Mary Medical Center and First National Bank of Newtown announce a five year partnership to sponsor the Bucks County Comprehensive Concussion Team to expand services, education and baseline impact testing to more than 20 schools and school districts in Bucks County.

Local law firm, Stark & Stark recently held a community fundraiser to support the Bucks County SAFE Kids program at St. Mary which is a Pediatric Injury Prevention in partnership that includes car seat safety, home safety, bike safety, poison prevention, playground safety and sports injury prevention.

Coordinated by Kimberly Everett, the Trauma Prevention Coordinator at St. Mary, the Bucks County Comprehensive Concussion Team provides education and resources including ImPACT testing for student athletes, coaches and parents in participating schools. ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is the first, most-widely used, and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system. Developed in the early 1990's, ImPACT is a 20-minute test that has become a standard tool used in comprehensive clinical management of concussions for athletes of all ages.

St. Mary to present a $50,000 grant from the Philadelphia Chapter and the Global Headquarters of Ronald McDonald House Charities to support St. Mary's recent Labor & Delivery and NICU Renovation and Expansion project and to name the St. Mary NICU Family Room. Ronald McDonald House Charities is a long-time partner with St. Mary, most recently supporting the Family Reception area in the BMS Pediatric Emergency Care Center at St. Mary.
