On behalf of the Methodist Hospital Foundation Board, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our 9th Annual Fashion Fundraiser. We have a guiding principle, at the Methodist Hospital Foundation: It’s that building community wellness benefits one and all. We believe that when you strengthen the links, a chain reaction of health and wellness positively impacts people, and the people around them, every day. I am honored to serve as Chairman of the Foundation and I embrace its charitable mission to serve the healthcare needs of the South Philadelphia community. As a public healthcare charity the Foundation is the fundraising arm of Methodist Hospital. Through initiatives and grants, we fund necessary projects that further the goals of a healthier neighborhood. The bylaws of the Foundation designate that all money donated and gifted to the Foundation is used solely for the betterment of our neighborhood. Since 1998 the Foundation has awarded more than $2 million in community grants.
Community Paramedicine
At no cost to the patient, Methodist Hospital and JeffSTAT have piloted a new population health initiative in South Philadelphia aimed at providing the right care for recovery and reduced hospital readmissions. During the month after discharge, a paramedic pays ongoing visits to the patient to help with their transition home.
AHO Athlete Health Organization administers
free physicals to scholar athletes grades nine to 12. Thanks to the support of the Foundation AHO has grown from screening a few hundred children to thousands. This program has prevented potentially unnecessary tragedies from occurring on the playing field.
Methodist Hospital Foundation
JeffFIT is a comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation program providing one-on-one care with the latest advanced equipment and complete stroke coordination. All provided with optimal patient convenience at Methodist Hospital.
St. Thomas Aquinas
an Independence Mission School, serves culturally diverse students in an underserved neighborhood of South Philadelphia. They lacked a science lab and physical education program until the Foundation funded a grant to provide these services.
A.D.R.O.P.
focuses on wellness + education + justice in building bridges between providers, recipients and community leaders across economic political and religious spectra. They seek a community that recognizes the dignity and respect owed all persons.
Following the greatest need for Methodist Hospital the Foundation institutes large capital projects—initiatives.
Women's Diagnostic Center
The Foundation funding of a new Women's Diagnostic Center allows women to schedule an appointment within weeks of their initial call. Mammogram services were expanded to accommodate more than 12,000 women each year, a 40 percent increase.
Acute Dialysis Unit
The Foundation met the challenge of an aging population and rising rates of hypertension and diabetes in our community by funding a state-ofthe-art Acute Kidney Dialysis Unit.
Methodist Hospital Foundation
Community Nursing
The Foundation administers Nursing Scholarships in memory of Anne Rogan, Methodist Hospital School of Nursing class of 2006. Anne lost her 12 year battle with cancer in 2008.
Outpatient Cardiac Rehab
Endoscopy Suite
When the construction dust settled on this nationally certified program, the Foundation had fully funded the expanded state-of-the-art center for Jefferson’s Methodist Hospital Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation program.
The Foundation responded when the Board was presented with the facts of an increase in colon cancer among the aging population in South Philadelphia. The Endoscopy Suite helps to save lives by the early detection of colon cancer.

A Bond for Life
Brianna Dougherty had scoliosis since she was 8. Dr. Alexander R. Vaccaro changed her life more than a decade later. The relationship between Brianna Dougherty and her orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Alexander R. Vaccaro, who performed the first procedures at the Jefferson Advanced Spine Center, has had a profound impact on Brianna’s life for the better.
Brianna was 8 when she was diagnosed with scoliosis, 15 when she stopped wearing a back brace and in her 20s when her curvature went from 30 to 60 degrees. She met with Dr. Vaccaro, president of the Rothman Institute and Chairman, Jefferson Department of Orthopaedic Surgery knowing surgery was not an option – it was her only hope. “Since I have had scoliosis since I was 8, I thought it was just life, that literally back pain like this affected everyone in the world,” Brianna, who was a 21-year-old West Chester University student majoring in elementary education at the time of her surgery, said. Dr. Vaccaro performed the nine-hour surgery in January 2016. Brianna spent eight days in the hospital.
