Dear Friends, In a few short years, Einstein will celebrate 150 years of service to the Philadelphia region. When The Jewish Hospital began in 1866, equality was uncommon in medical institutions.

The Jewish Hospital dedicated itself to “the relief of the sick and wounded, without regard to creed, color, or nationality.”

This Mission was visionary. Remember, slavery was abolished only a few years earlier, and women were not yet permitted to vote. Many thought sustaining this new hospital in Philadelphia was not possible. We’ve shown otherwise.

Three years ago, we began another journey that many doubted we could achieve—an ambitious campaign to raise $100 million over six years. The largest fundraising effort in our history. Unlikely? Impossible?

We’re excited to share that three years into The Einstein Campaign, we have already raised $98.5 million. Since the response to this effort has been so positive, we recently made the decision to increase our Campaign goal. We now plan to raise $150 million by 2016, the same year we will celebrate Einstein’s 150th anniversary.

Is it ambitious? Yes, there’s no question about it. But impossible?

Definitely not. And with your help, we’re going to make it happen. We have a strategic plan and a vision, we have a Mission, and we dare to dream so that 150 years from now, Einstein Healthcare Network will still be doing the impossible.

Led by its mission, Einstein Healthcare Network is embarking on its most ambitious fundraising campaign in its 147-year history. Unlike most campaigns of this magnitude, The Einstein Campaign is not about raising dollars specifically for new buildings or equipment.

“This is more than a campaign about bricks and mortar,” states former Chairman of the Board and The Einstein Campaign Co-Chairman Richard C. Sheerr. “It is a comprehensive campaign about our determination to sustain Einstein’s historic commitment to healthcare excellence, innovation and opportunity while advancing its national reputation for distinction.”

Begun in silent phase two years ago with a goal of raising $100 million

by June 30, 2016, The Einstein Campaign is already exceeding expectations.

“In the private phase, our goal has been to get 100 percent participation from our board members, management, faculty, family members and close friends—and we’re well on our way to doing that,” notes Richard, who also serves as Honorary Chairman of the Einstein Board of Trustees and is a member of its Board of Overseers. “It’s very encouraging and more successful than we had hoped.”

Due to this success, in June, Campaign Cabinet Members, the Development Committee of the Board and the Board of Trustees unanimously voted to increase the campaign goal. When the network marks its 150th anniversary in June 2016, leadership also anticipates closing the campaign having raised $150 million.

Through the campaign, Einstein looks to heal lives and strengthen communities with millions of dollars’ worth of new resources devoted to the three key areas of Einstein expertise: Patient Care: Since 1866, Einstein has been unwavering in its mission to provide compassionate care, innovative techniques and excellent treatment for each and every patient. The Einstein Campaign will expand and enhance patient services, increase accessibility to care, implement Best Practices, improve patient satisfaction and ensure patient safety.

Teaching and Research: Highly regarded as the preeminent, independent academic healthcare provider in the Philadelphia region, Einstein looks to expand its academic reach, enhance residency programs, sustain clinical and educational leadership and increase committed funds for established research.

Community Outreach and Service Programs: Following the Jewish ideal of Tikkun Olam, Einstein has always been and remains committed to serving its growing communities by providing healthcare education, outreach and intervention at a direct cost to the Network. The Einstein Campaign will further strengthen support for distinctive community service and public health programs to improve the wellness of the region.

Guiding the campaign are Co-Chairmen Richard Sheerr—a devoted leader who most recently helped guide the network’s Board of Trustees as Chairman during the planning, development and construction phases of recently opened Einstein Medical Center Montgomery (EMCM)—and his wife, Betsy Sheerr, a long-time community leader herself.

SuPPOrTinG EinSTEin through philanthropy and volunteering is a FAMiLy AFFAir for the Sheerrs.

Richard’s loyalty to Einstein and its affiliates runs deep.

Since the 1960s, when his father, Stanley Sheerr, was President and Chairman of Moss Rehabilitation Hospital (now MossRehab, which joined Einstein in 1992), he got to see first-hand how community leadership impacted people. Richard joined the Moss board in 1978 and became its Chairman in 1990 during the initial merger negotiations with Einstein.

While Richard has focused his leadership efforts in healthcare and Betsy primarily in Jewish philanthropy, both share the core values common to Einstein’s mission.

“Both Richard and I come from a long line of people who care about the community,” says Betsy, whose leadership service includes her work as a trustee with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia. “We both grew up having discussions at the dinner table on how to make things better, what needed to be done and how to take a leadership role in making it happen.” When asked to co-chair The Einstein Campaign with her husband, Betsy didn’t hesitate. “I share his passion for the network’s sense of mission and cutting-edge technology. My sense of respect and enthusiasm has only grown exponentially as I have gotten to know the board members and staff.”

Supporting Einstein through philanthropy and volunteering is a family affair for the Sheerrs. Daughter Deborah Gordon Klehr (daughter-in-law of Einstein supporters Susan and Leonard Klehr) volunteers with the Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases, and Richard’s sister, Constance Kittner, is active with the MossRehab Aphasia Center. In honor of Richard’s 65th birthday, Sheerr family members and friends recently made donations toward a planned mother’s resource center to provide well-baby care, nursing supplies, advice and other support to new mothers.

The campaign seeks to capitalize on this kind of personalized commitment to broaden Einstein's reach. Under the decade-long tenure of President and CEO Barry Freedman, Einstein has pursued a strategy of growth.

the EINSTEIN CAMPAIGN continued Hospital and Montgomery Healthcare System, it accelerated with the opening of Einstein Medical Center Montgomery—the first new hospital to be built in Southeastern Pennsylvania in the new millenium.

To move Einstein toward the future, the campaign has established an inclusive leadership “cabinet” comprised of chairmen from numerous Einstein committees so that various viewpoints across the network are taken into consideration. Like the Sheerrs and many of his fellow Campaign Cabinet members, Wayne Kimmel made a leadership gift (along with his wife, Kimby) toward the campaign.

“This integral effort helps fulfill Einstein’s mission of providing high-quality healthcare in our diverse markets,” says Minkoff, who made a leadership gift with his wife, Sara. “It supports state-of-the-art medical technology such as the da Vinci ® Surgical System; family medicine for underinsured populations in North Philadelphia; cutting-edge rehabilitation medicine at nationally ranked MossRehab; and well patient care at the Cheltenham Shopping Center and the Klein JCC in the Northeast.”

“Kimby and I believe in the mission of Einstein and are deeply committed to caring for the regional community,” says Kimmel, who serves as Chairman of Einstein’s Development Committee. “We think it is our responsibility to stand up and be leaders.”

Amidst the backdrop of a volatile and uncertain healthcare landscape, the campaign recognizes the necessity to leverage private support to fund the strategic publicsector investments Einstein must make. For the Sheerrs, contributing to that goal is a natural imperative.

Pillar of the community celebrates his 71-year marriage and the passion for Einstein he shared with his late wife “Whatever a man has is, in the end, only a gift.”

This is one of Fred Braemer’s favorite sayings—and throughout nearly five decades of supporting Einstein and the people it serves, he and his late wife Minerva lived it by sharing whatever they had with family and the community.

“In devoting themselves to Einstein, Fred and Minerva taught their son and grandchildren to value loyalty, heritage, family and commitment to one’s community,” says Einstein Healthcare Network President & CEO, Barry Freedman.

“They have touched tens of thousands of lives with their kind and giving spirit.”

Fred, the youngest of five children, came to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh during the Great Depression to work in a cigar factory. Minerva, a native Philadelphian, met him while working for the U.S. Census Bureau. After a whirlwind courtship, they married in 1939 on New Year’s Eve and relied on each other during the lean years of the Depression and World War II. After the war, Fred joined a 7

detective agency started by his father-in-law and built it into the nationally known Globe Security Systems, where Minerva worked for many years as its chief accountant.

As their livelihood flourished, they sought ways to help others through volunteerism and philanthropy—and Einstein was at the top of their list.

“My parents’ history instilled in them the need to give back part of their good fortune to the community,” recalls Richard Braemer, Esq., senior counsel with Ballard Spahr LLP. “They had the time, desire and resources to get involved, and for many years Einstein was their principal devotion.”

As co-founding member and President of Einstein’s Ethel R. Chernicoff Charities, Minerva ran the group’s annual Regency Ball.

She also sold flowers in the lobby

of the Levy Building—where she became known as “the flower lady”— and was a key organizer in the Einstein Auxiliary’s annual Harvest Ball.

Fred’s involvement began in 1964 as a member of the Einstein Board of Trustees, followed by his election as President and CEO (the last volunteer to hold that post before it became a paid position). He was also a founding member of the Albert Einstein Society, which honored the couple in 1992.

“I have been involved with a number of organizations over the years, but Einstein is my passion,” says Fred.

“Einstein became part of the DNA of both my parents,” adds Richard.

“Not only were they financially generous to Einstein, they both readily sought out others to support Einstein in the same way.”

It was no surprise to many that Richard would follow in his parents’ footsteps, serving on the Einstein Board of Directors and as Chairman of the Governance Committee. As Einstein Board Chairman from 2005 to 2009, he helped the network regain its independence and solidified plans to expand through the opening of its newest hospital, Einstein Medical Center Montgomery.

The gift that may hold the most meaning for the family is embodied by the recent naming of the Minerva D. Braemer Medical Arts Building at Einstein Montgomery in honor of the woman to whom Fred was happily married for 71 years until her passing in 2010. Located on the newly built East Norriton campus, the medical arts building features a growing array of Einstein-affiliated and independent practices offering outpatient surgery, MossRehab rehabilitation therapy and high-quality services in cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, obstetrics/ gynecology, neurology and pain management.

“The Minerva D. Braemer Medical Arts Building houses critical services and offers our patients hope,” said Freedman at the dedication ceremony in February 2013, noting that the question, “What’s best for Einstein?” has always guided the Braemer family’s decisions.

“The gift that my father has made in memory of my mother can truly be said to be a gift of love,” adds Richard. “What better way is there to combine both the love of a departed spouse and the love of an institution? It is a wonderful example for all of us.” ■

the healing power of NaTurE Serenity abounds through The Jane and Leonard Korman Family healing Garden For patients, medical professionals and visitors alike, hospitals can be places filled with heightened emotions and stress. Thanks to a generous gift from The Jane and Leonard Korman Family Foundation, Einstein Medical Center Montgomery now has a peaceful outdoor space to help reduce that stress.

The Jane and Leonard Korman Family Healing Garden will serve as a sanctuary where people can relax, reflect and find a quiet respite. The project, which commenced construction in March, is a natural match between funding needs and interests for the Kormans, who have focused their time and philanthropy on healthcare, nature and arts-related causes and institutions.

“We know how difficult it can be when people come to a hospital either for their own health issues or to visit a loved one,” says Leonard Korman. “That’s why my wife, Jane, and I are so pleased to create a quiet, soothing refuge where patients and visitors can connect with nature and lighten their load a bit.”

Leonard has been a member of the Einstein Board of Trustees for more than three decades, serving in a variety of leadership positions. Jane―a former gallery owner and Morris Arboretum advisory board member who remains active in the local arts community―served on Einstein Montgomery’s Art Committee, which helped select more than 500 pieces of art that contribute to the hospital’s healing environment. Jane and Leonard Korman have three 9

daughters, Alison Korman Feldman, Susan Schurr and Catherine Altman. Alison Korman Feldman is an Einstein Board Member, continuing her family’s long tradition of service.

Studies show interacting with nature provides important physical, psychological and emotional benefits. The Joint Commission, which accredits and certifies healthcare organizations and programs, recommends “patients and visitors have opportunities to connect with nature through outside spaces, plants, indoor atriums and views from windows.”

Integrated with the hospital’s South Entrance and adjacent to the Betsy and Richard Sheerr Patio (see sidebar), the 21,500 square-foot garden incorporates a serpentine walkway providing shaded areas and benches, with landscape lighting accenting the walkways and plantings. The focal point is a unique wall feature with a cascading waterfall.

An extensive palette of trees, shrubs, groundcovers, perennials and bulbs tied to each of the four seasons will be planted.

Seasonal planting types will include Dwarf Witch Alder, Oakleaf Hydrangea, Sedum, Virginia Sweetspire and Honeylocust (fall); Plum Yew, Russian Sage, Youngstown Juniper, Blue Pacific Juniper and Chinese Elm (winter); Dwarf Iris, Deutzia, Ornamental Onion, Crocus and Tulip (spring); and Yarrow, Veronica, Coneflower, Drift Rose and Coreopsis (summer).

The garden was designed by the late Stuart Appel of Wells Appel, a Philadelphia firm specializing in planning, landscape architecture and urban design. The project was managed by Dan Chieco, RLA, a senior associate with Wells Appel, with construction management by Gilbane Building Company.

“This is a very exciting time at Einstein Montgomery,” says the hospital’s Chief Operating Officer, Beth Duffy. “The Jane and Leonard Korman Family Healing Garden is a tremendous addition, and we’re grateful for the family’s generosity.”

The garden wall features a dedication inscribed in memory of Leonard’s parents, Max and Matilda Korman, and Jane’s parents, David Friedman and Rosalie Friedman Wachs. The dedication also includes the following quote from the great scientist Albert Einstein: “Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” ■

As part of Einstein’s efforts

to provide an alternative, fresh-air location for staff and visitors to congregate or share a meal, the Betsy and Richard Sheerr Patio at Einstein Medical Center Montgomery was intentionally designed and constructed as a companion project to The Jane and Leonard Korman Family Healing Garden.

“We felt it was important to take an integrated approach to the Healing Garden and outdoor patio,” says Richard, who was directly involved in the planning process. “When it became clear that our vision would require additional funding, Betsy and I stepped in to help because we thought this was a great idea.”

Situated near the building’s South Entrance, the patio features shaded tables and chairs for outdoor dining. It is bordered by trees, plantings and a walkway connecting to the garden. The integration of the garden and patio is especially meaningful for Richard because his parents were good friends with Leonard Korman’s parents, who are memorialized on the garden wall.

The Sheerrs feel strongly that outdoor spaces are essential to advancing Einstein’s holistic healing mission.

“We have a particular affinity for gardens and respect for the beauty and healthful effects of being outdoors, so this seemed like a good fit,” says Betsy. ■

turning tragedy into HOpE Altman family honors a legacy of kindness through The Steven, Daniel and Douglas Altman Chair of Endocrinology From his earliest days, David Altman doesn’t remember a world without Einstein, the place where all five of his children were born.

He and his late wife, Louise, developed a lifelong relationship with Einstein through Drs. Benjamin Chernoff and Edith Korentzwitt—married internal medicine physicians who were with Einstein for more than 50 years—as well as with their son, Arthur Chernoff, MD, who joined his parents’ practice in 1979 as an internist and endocrinologist.

One of the Altmans’ sons, Steven, later became a member of Einstein’s Board of Overseers. That effort was just one of many ways he and other family members were able to meet their shared commitment of helping others through volunteerism and philanthropy.

“We all felt that if we could give something back, we would,” recalls Steven’s brother Brett. “Our family always believed in tzedekah (justice through giving), so we carried on that legacy.”

For years, few boundaries between work and personal life existed for the extended Altman family. Brett, Steven and a third brother, Daniel, were partners together in the Altman Group — a development, contracting and property management firm established in 1993 as an outgrowth of the highly successful carpentry and drywall business their father had formed as a U.S. Marine World War II veteran.

But then their world turned upside-down in 2009, when three family members perished in an airplane crash. Piloted by Steven, who was joined by Daniel and his 15-year-old son, Douglas, the single-engine plane collided over the Hudson River with a sightseeing helicopter.

“It was a tremendous loss,” says David Altman. “We were very proud of them and what they were doing, of their abilities and whatever they would have done in the future.”

Before Louise’s death in May 2013, David and his wife decided to honor their memories by endowing The Steven, Daniel and Douglas Chair of Endocrinology at Einstein. Their choice for serving as the inaugural chair was none other than Dr. Arthur Chernoff, a decision the couple found as simple as it was personal.

“If clinical faculty members were to have a research idea that might not be sufficiently supported to do what they need to do, the endowment is a potential source of supplemental funding,” points out Dr. Chernoff.

“What one family member may be involved with is for the benefit of all,” says Brett, who along with partner Bob Bluth continues to manage the Altman Group.

“Our parents really felt this gift was the best way to honor my brothers’ and nephew’s memories.” ■

“His father was a great guy and a good physician; we were close,” says David. “And he [Arthur] is a fine physician and a fine man himself, so who else would we choose?”

“It’s an extraordinary honor because it does something very few legacies do, which is to support ideas and programs rather than bricks and mortar or equipment and hardware,” notes Dr. Chernoff, a Philadelphia magazine “Top Doc” who specializes in arteriosclerosis, diabetes and thyroid disease. “It’s really a vote of confidence in my way of trying to be innovative while teaching what has become very old-fashioned today—the notion of taking care of the whole patient, one patient at a time.”

The funds from the endowment may be used to support programs in the Division of Endocrinology whether they are related to patient care, education of faculty and fellows or clinical research.

art maT TErS Groundbreaking artwork at Einstein Medical Center Montgomery helps to heal and inspire From pastoral landscapes to heart-tugging close-ups of baby hands to a DayGlo-bright installation by the incomparable Sol LeWitt, all of the artwork at Einstein Medical Center Montgomery has been chosen with the intention to heal, soothe and inspire.

In keeping with Einstein’s commitment to the community, leaders wanted the majority of the new hospital’s artwork to reflect local demographics, values, and geography. Who else to better capture this than local artists? With the help of Health Environment Art Services' Daniel Day—who spent nearly two years choosing art for the hospital—over 500 works of art were selected, many from local artists.

“When you’re in the Emergency Room and get bad news, you want the artwork to be a positive distraction,” pointed out Day in a Philadelphia Inquirer article.

...nearly two years choosing ArT FOr ThE hOSPiTAL— over 500 works of art were selected, many from LOCAL ArTiSTS. Works displayed throughout the hospital include scenes from the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania and the Wissahickon Valley; artistic tiles created by members of Mamacita, a mothers cooperative of 11 artists; oversized photos of baby feet, hands and ears in the maternity area; and a painting by a Cheltenham resident treated for breast cancer by an Einstein physician.

Research shows a thoughtful approach to hospital art can improve patient outcomes—including shorter stays and less need for pain medication—as well as enhance staff satisfaction and retention. That’s why the majority of the art chosen for Einstein Montgomery’s patientcentered areas focuses on restorative, peaceful images.

Inspiring artwork that connects the community also exists at the adjacent Minerva D. Braemer Medical Arts Building, which houses medical practices, diagnostic suites and outpatient surgical offices. In cooperation with Einstein and the building’s tenants, representatives of the Greater Norristown Art League agreed to curate a twice-yearly rotating exhibition of local art.

Titled “Wall Drawing #972,” the installation is a creation of the late Sol LeWitt, considered the father of the conceptual art movement. Best known for his geometric sculptures and architecturally scaled wall drawings, LeWitt’s works are displayed around the world.

Much like an architect’s blueprints or a composer’s score, LeWitt’s wall drawings begin as sets of instructions meant to be deciphered and interpreted. The installation of the work is considered a part of the artwork itself. On-site artists came together at Einstein Montgomery over a month-long period to create the paintings by following LeWitt’s detailed diagrams and instructions.

a thoughtful approach to hOSPiTAL ArT can iMPrOVE PATiEnT OuTCOMES Complementing these temporary works is a collaborative six-panel mural created by local artists that depicts the Wissahickon Creek which will remain part of the building’s permanent collection. The Braemer Medical Arts Building program also supports the community because the artists’ works are available for sale.

“We decided on the patient care units there would be the more tranquil, bucolic scenery and local landscapes,” Einstein Healthcare Network President and CEO Barry Freedman was quoted in an Associated Press article.

“But in that corridor that connects our two main entrances, we thought that’s where we should have something vibrant and uplifting, with wonderful colors.”

Bringing a LeWitt wall drawing to Einstein Montgomery had been a dream of Freedman’s since 2008 when he visited a LeWitt exhibition at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. “At that time, Einstein was deeply involved in the planning for Einstein Montgomery. As we were moving forward with our plans, I kept thinking about how marvelous and wonderful it would be if we could have one of LeWitt’s wall drawings in our new hospital.”

After years of hoping, the unique project came to fruition through MossRehab Chief Medical Officer Dr. Alberto Esquenazi and his wife, Rosa, who knew LeWitt enthusiast Freedman hoped to bring one of his inspiring works to the hospital. A friend of the Esquenazis contacted

representatives of the LeWitt estate to discuss the possibility of lending a wall installation to Einstein Montgomery.

After many conversations, the estate agreed to lend the vibrant piece that had previously been displayed solely at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin. Thanks to a generous gift from LeWitt’s estate Wall Drawing #972 will grace the walls of Einstein Montgomery for the next 25 years.

“LeWitt liked to explore new ideas and ways of doing things,” says Einstein Montgomery Chief Operating Officer Beth Duffy. “Hosting a piece of art by such a visionary modern artist is a perfect fit with our own efforts to transform the way that great healthcare is being delivered in this region.” ■

the foundation of SuCCESS Arthur Powell traces a lifetime of achievement and community service to love of family For Arthur Powell, success in business has always been inspired by family—from the Russian immigrant parents who encouraged him to fearlessly tread his own path, to the wife who shared that path with him every step of the way, to the children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren who make his life joyous.

For more than half a century, the engineer-turnedentrepreneur has been the driving force of Kravco, the company best known for creating the world-renowned King of Prussia Mall. While he has achieved beyond his dreams, he continues to dedicate his tenth decade of life to family and to those in need.

“Art is a thoughtful, modest man who is very committed to his own family and also to supporting the community —especially people who are not being adequately served,” says his friend Richard Braemer, Einstein board member and former chairman.

Philanthropy and volunteerism have always meant more to Art than simply honoring the institutions that helped provide him with opportunities to succeed.

“As a business person, I enjoy being involved in the business problems of healthcare if I can help,” says Art, who served as Vice Chairman of Montgomery Healthcare System’s Board of Directors and is now an honorary member of Einstein’s Board of Overseers. “If I joined a board, I had to have something to contribute as well as support financially—and my wife, Lea, and I always participated together.”

The Powells had previously supported the creation of 26 birthing rooms at Montgomery Hospital Medical Center as a crucial community priority.

“Maternity care at Montgomery Hospital was very expensive because of high insurance costs and the 17

lack of prenatal care, so Art was eager to help where it was most needed,” says John E. F. Corson (JEF), a long-time friend and fellow member of Einstein’s Board of Overseers who worked closely with him while serving as Board Chair of Montgomery Healthcare System.

The Powells became all too familiar with the inside of a hospital themselves when Lea was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2005. Family members brought in a nurse and helped organize Lea’s care so Art could continue to work and still come home for lunch with her every day. Sadly, she lost her battle after just 10 months.

Art has continued his support for maternity and infant care by gifting the eight-bed Level III neonatal intensive care unit at Einstein Medical Center Montgomery through The Einstein Campaign. The Lea and Arthur Powell Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is staffed 24 hours a day by Einstein neonatologists, eliminating the need for newborns to be transported to other locations for advanced care.

“Arthur is a keenly intelligent, unassuming man whose principles drive his philanthropy,” says Lewis I. Gantman, a former Kravco President and General Counsel who now serves as Vice Chairman for Einstein’s Board of Trustees and Board Chairman for Einstein Medical Center Montgomery. “He knows the stronger Einstein is as an institution, the better it will be able to fulfill its mission to serve people from Broad Street to Northeast Philly to Montgomery County.”

Art says he hopes future generations of Powells will continue to cherish the value of family and carry on the philanthropic work that meant so much to him and Lea. “I’ve been fortunate to have a good education and a healthy, supportive family,” he says.

“You don’t live in the world by yourself, so those of us who can do something should. I think it’s very important for people who have succeeded to give back to the community.” ■

HEarTaCHE Through Genetic Screening and Education Susan and Leonard Klehr support community outreach through Einstein’s Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases For Susan Kline Klehr, the somewhat abstract notion of geneticbased disease became alarmingly real years ago when she found out that one of her friend’s daughters was born with a potentially life-threatening genetic defect - one that would eventually require a liver transplant for survival.

“It was a very frightening thing,” recalls Susan, a member of Einstein’s Board of Overseers. “She’s in her 20s and doing fine now, but it made me realize how important genetic testing is.”

That’s one of the reasons why Susan and her husband decided to establish the Susan and Leonard Klehr Fund to support Einstein’s Victor Center for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Diseases―the organization dedicated to ensuring access to comprehensive genetic education, counseling services and screening. Established in 2002 thanks to seed money from the Albert Einstein Society, the national Victor Center is based in Philadelphia.

“Premarital counseling should include genetic testing, even for interfaith couples, because some people do not know they are Jewish until they have a child affected by a genetic defect,” says Victor Center Medical Director, Adele Schneider, MD, who also serves as director of Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia’s Clinical Genetics division. “We are now rescreening people who were checked years ago for fewer diseases.” Schneider says, “When in doubt, screen.”

The Center was founded in partnership with Einstein Healthcare Network by Einstein Board Member Lois Victor, a mother who lost two children to a Jewish genetic disease and vowed to ensure no families would have to endure the heartache of preventable illness. Over the past decade, its impact has grown as genetic science has advanced and donors such as Victor and the Klehrs have helped spread awareness. Today, the national Victor Center 19

provides education, training and technical assistance to several community partnerships and affiliated regional centers in Boston, Miami and Pittsburgh. More than 7,200 adults have been screened, often for a more comprehensive panel of diseases than previously tested.

“When I was pregnant, we tested for Tay-Sachs and that was it,” remembers Susan. “Now there are tests for 19 genetic diseases, some of which affect people beyond the Ashkenazi Jewish community. It’s far-reaching.”

Supporting the Victor Center’s efforts to educate and screen the public is a natural match for the Klehrs, whose volunteer and philanthropic interests have often centered on education and community. Susan helped develop an inner-city after-school literacy program and is a Trustee at alma mater Franklin & Marshall College, where she met fellow student and future husband Leonard. An attorney, Leonard is Vice Chairman of Lubert-Adler, LP, a private equity real estate firm. He has served on numerous boards and committees, including Temple Law School, The Philadelphia School, Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Gesu School and Operation Understanding.

Both Susan and Leonard have served on the Board of Trustees for their synagogue, Rodeph Shalom, where Susan was president.

Over the years the two F&M alumni have been highly involved with the college, raising money for a student internship program, creating an endowed scholarship for minority students and providing the lead gift for the Klehr Center for Jewish Life.

“When I was asked to join the Einstein board and looked more closely at its members, I realized a large number of them were people from the Jewish community whom I had always respected,” says Susan. “Now the more I learn about Einstein, the more I realize how missiondriven everyone is. To me, that’s honorable and impressive; it goes beyond the science of curing people.”

For donors like the Klehrs, there is no greater gift than to help make sure everyone gets tested.

“What the Center does is incredible,” says Susan. “It’s a very good cause being stewarded by professionals who are highly capable. Our hope is to expand the Center’s efforts in order to reach as many people as possible.”

Einstein medical staff and residents find companion locations to learn and grow in the Marcia and Arnold Cohen Conference rooms (Ob/Gyn) When Dr. Arnold Cohen discovered a pharmaceutical company was increasing the cost of its premature labor prevention drug to $1,500 a shot, he jumped into action to oppose it. That kind of advocacy for women living in poverty or underserved communities has been the hallmark of his career and decade-long tenure as Einstein’s Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN).

To cement support for the advancement of women’s healthcare services and education, Dr. Cohen and his wife, Marcia, recently made a gift to The Einstein Campaign to fund conference rooms at both Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia and Einstein Medical Center Montgomery.

“It’s appropriate that the Cohens chose the conference room spaces to support, because that’s where future OB/GYN physicians are being trained,” notes David Jaspan, DO, the new Chairman of the Department of

OB/GYN. “Those rooms serve as their home; it’s where they grow as professionals, clinicians and surgeons.”

The Einstein Philadelphia conference room is used for resident and nurse education, patient case discussion, academic review of science and medical information, and grand rounds related to women’s health. For the moment, the Einstein Montgomery room is primarily used for staff conferencing and administrative meetings.

Both rooms more recently hosted Einstein Women’s Health Talks, a series of community education events open to the public.

Sufficient access to high-quality women’s health care in the region is in jeopardy as fewer hospitals are offering labor and delivery and other services for women—an issue of great concern for Dr. Cohen, who chaired a local subcommittee on patient quality-of-care impact from obstetrical care unit closures.

“In keeping with its mission, Einstein has been very supportive of all women’s services—from OB/GYN to breast cancer to menopause—while other places continue to withdraw their support,” says Dr. Cohen, who recently stepped down as Chairman of the OB/GYN Department but continues to work full-time as Program Director, handling both clinical and administrative functions.

Dr. Cohen has been honored with several prestigious awards, taught at several medical schools and personally delivered thousands of babies—including multiple generations in the same family. As Chief of Einstein’s Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, he developed the first maternal-fetal medicine fellowship to combine an academic community hospital with a university program. He also developed screening programs for high-risk pregnancy, postpartum depression and breast cancer genes as Corporate Medical Director of Women’s Health at Aetna/U.S. Healthcare. And he served on the global medical advisory board for Americares, an organization that distributes medicine and medical technologies to people living in Haiti, Ecuador and other underserved communities.

Carlene Quashie, MD, an Einstein residency program faculty member who now serves as Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division Director, echoes Dr. Jaspan and considers Dr. Cohen to be a mentor and ideal role model for OB/GYN practice and education. “Of all the people I have learned things from, Dr. Cohen has been the most influential person in my career,” she says.

Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine, Dr. Cohen has taught at several medical schools and written more than 100 articles, abstracts and book chapters. He has been honored over the years with many awards including the Edgar Moss Scientific Award and the Gustav Seeligmann Prize. This year, Dr. Cohen earned the Outstanding Collaborator Award for Improving Maternal Health Across Borders, from Drexel College of Nursing and Health Professionals and a Lifetime Achievement Innovation Award from the Philadelphia Business Journal and United Healthcare. Recently, Dr. Cohen’s dedication to research was honored with the establishment of The Arnold Cohen, MD Research Fund for Obstetrics and Gynecology to benefit Einstein OB/GYN residents. ■

Appointed as the inaugural incumbent is distinguished rehabilitation physician Alberto Esquenazi, MD. Through his work, Dr. Esquenazi assists people with limitations due to accidents or neurological disorders to function better through prosthetics, orthotics and other treatments and technologies. “It will help us discover new ways to expand the horizons of rehabilitation science and to provide the highest levels of care with integrity and respect for the patients we serve.”

“It is a privilege to know John and Janet,” he says. “They have clearly signaled to us they believe in the work we are doing. They are hoping for bigger and better things from MossRehab and the very talented people who work here.”

MossRehab was chosen to conduct the only U.S. clinical trials for ReWalk, a revolutionary motorized suit that helps people with irreversible spinal cord injury or other walking impairments to stand, walk and climb stairs. In addition to overseeing those clinical trials, Dr. Esquenazi serves as Clinical Director of the Regional Amputee Center and Chief of the Prosthetic and Orthotic Clinic.

He recently completed his term as president of the 8,000-member

American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, which honored him with its Distinguished Clinician Award. He is also a past recipient of the Albert Einstein Society Physician Leadership Award.

“The John Otto Haas Chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will help us pursue new innovations more aggressively and will support the hard work we do in developing better clinical systems of care and improving rehabilitation-related research and education,” says Dr. Esquenazi. “This is a milestone for MossRehab and for the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

The grant was recommended to the trust by John Otto Haas, who received care at MossRehab, and his wife, Janet F. Haas, MD, a physical rehabilitation and brain injury specialist who worked at the facility nearly 25 years ago.

But within its first year of opening―a time period in which The Leonard and Madlyn Abramson Family Emergency Department logged nearly 20% more patient visits than projected―they realized the true importance of its role to people living in the surrounding neighborhoods and beyond.

rooms, interventional radiology, cardiac catheterization labs, electrophysiology labs and an intensive care unit all on the same floor.

The department features 43 beds, including a seven-bed section for minor injuries, an eight-bed section for observation of patients who may or may not be admitted, and two pods with 28 beds for patients with acute symptoms. It gives the new hospital a more comprehensive ability to diagnose and treat without needing to send patients elsewhere.

The department’s capacity to serve the community from day one has been supported by a gift from the Abramson Family Foundation, whose trustees include Leonard and Madlyn Abramson―well-known philanthropists who have dedicated many years to supporting Montgomery Hospital, Einstein and other causes important to them―as well as their three daughters, Marcy Shoemaker, Judith Felgoise and Nancy Wolfson whose husband, Richard, serves on Einstein’s Board of Overseers.

Having lived in Montgomery County for many years, Leonard and Madlyn were well aware that people often don’t have the flexibility to choose where to go for acute care. That’s

“We would have a hard time doing our jobs and providing the kind of care and service we offer without people like the Abramsons,” says Carl Chudnofsky, MD, Chairman of Emergency Medicine for Einstein Healthcare Network. “Their generosity makes a huge difference in taking care of our patients every day. When you work in a place like this, you see how those dollars support those efforts.”

Donor funding also allows Einstein Montgomery physicians, nurses and staff to have the technology they need to care for patients as efficiently as possible.

“We’re always looking at new technology and equipment that helps our patients have less pain, more comfort, less invasive procedures and more expeditious care,” says Dr. Czincila, who trained at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia as a resident and began working at Montgomery Hospital in 2007.

Efficient care has become increasingly paramount as patient emergency room visits and hospital admissions have exceeded expectations since the hospital’s September 2012 opening; emergency visits are running 20% higher than anticipated and admissions are more than 40% above projection. To make sure patient needs are met, members of

Einstein’s Patient Throughput Committee are paying careful attention to those high volumes, which have triggered an early launch of a planned hospital expansion by converting fourth floor administrative offices into 24 additional private patient rooms.

“Our volumes on the unit are all running 80-85%, and sometimes 100%, full,” says Ann Witkowski, Einstein Montgomery’s Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer.

“Even if some patients are being held in the emergency area waiting for an open bed, we still have a registered nurse, technician and physician available for them.”

Dr. Chudnofsky praises the staff for handling the influx with a high degree of efficiency without sacrificing their professionalism or commitment to providing individualized care.

“Any time you embark on something completely new from the ground up―new building, technology, computers, electronic medical records―there are challenges, but our staff is meeting those challenges,” he notes. “From the facilities staff, technicians and clerks to the social workers, nurses and physicians, they’re a great group of smart, compassionate people who give it their all and are always striving to find better ways to take care of patients using evidence-based, cutting-edge methods.” ■

breast Cancer Action Group Symposium For more than two decades, the Breast Cancer Action Group (BCAG) of Einstein Healthcare Network has been making a difference in the lives of women affected by breast cancer. A volunteer group within Einstein’s Auxiliary, BCAG offers education on breast health, supports families of breast cancer patients, and advocates for patient rights.

BCAG held their annual Symposium and dinner on Thursday, May 9 at Philmont Country Club. This year’s presentation, Generation to Generation: Breaking the L’dor Vador of Cancer focused on the genetic links associated with breast and ovarian cancer.

Philadelphia international Flower Show On March 7, 2013 more than 100 Einstein family and friends gathered at a reception prior to taking in the sights, smells and sounds of this year’s “Brilliant!” Philadelphia International Flower Show.
