THIS IS THE PLACE FOR WHAT’S NEXT.

At ACCA, you’ll find a dynamic mix of fitness classes, day trips, overnight excursions, educational seminars, and dementia-friendly programming— along with meaningful opportunities to connect, learn, and thrive.

As we continue to grow and evolve, we’re creating experiences that bring people together and reflect the many ways people age today.

The best is yet to come—and you belong here. Stay connected as we shape the future of aging, together.

Dear Connections Reader,

For many years, Connections has lived up to its name by bringing people together through stories, shared experiences, and a sense of belonging. With each issue, we have celebrated the curiosity, resilience, humor, and generosity that define our community. It has been a privilege to be part of that conversation.

This issue marks the final edition of Connections in its current form, but it is very much not a goodbye.

The Athens Community Council on Aging is in the midst of a metamorphosis–an exciting period of reimagining how we show up, how we communicate, and how we best serve a community whose needs, interests, and expectations continue to evolve. That work has prompted us to rethink not just our programs and spaces, but also how we share stories and information with you.

What will not change is our commitment to connection (pardon the pun). ACCA will continue to offer a robust programming calendar designed to keep our neighbors engaged, nurtured, and inspired. What will change is the format, including how we invite you into what comes next.

We see this moment as an opening rather than an ending. It is an opportunity to listen more closely, to be more nimble, more inclusive, and more reflective of the many ways people experience aging today. It is also a chance to create new ways of staying connected (again, pardon the pun).

To everyone who has read Connections, contributed to it, or seen themselves reflected in its pages, thank you. Your engagement has helped shape not only this magazine but the broader work of our organization. We carry that spirit forward as we build what comes next.

I hope you will stay connected with us, pun very much intended. There is more to come, and we cannot wait to share it with you.

With gratitude and anticipation,

Connections is a quarterly publication distributed by ACCA throughout Northeast Georgia. The information contained herein has been obtained from sources believed to be reliable. At ACCA, we believe aging is worth celebrating—every season, every story, every step.

From new partnerships to old favorites, the past few months have been full of moments that prove just how important relationships are and how vibrant aging can be.

Joy & Intention Spans Generations

On Thanksgiving morning, the streets of Athens welcomed more than 800 runners for the Give Thanks 8K, presented by our friends at Massey Law. From a twoyear-old taking their very first race steps to an 86-yearold showing us what endurance truly looks like, the event reflected what makes our community so special.

That same spirit carried through Turkeypalooza, now in its 13th year. This all-hands-on-deck effort brings together ACCA, the UGA Office of Service-Learning’s Campus Kitchen, and Epting Events, which provides essential logistical support. With the help of volunteers and supporters, food and funds were donated, supplies were collected, grocery bags were prepared, and meals were delivered to neighbors in need.

The holiday season also included wrapping thousands of gifts for area seniors through Be a Santa to a Senior and supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, which brought joy to nearly 100 local children.

Partner of the Year: Golden Pantry

As we reflect on the partnerships that shape our work, The Golden Pantry is one that shows consistency, generosity, and genuine care for the community. Recently recognized as the Athens Chamber of Commerce’s 2026 Small Business of the Year, their impact continues to be felt across the region and here at ACCA.

Golden Pantry's support goes beyond sponsorship or single moments of visibility. It shows up in sustained engagement, local presence, and a willingness to step in when neighbors need support most. That kind of partnership helps create a place where people of every age feel seen, supported, and valued, today and beyond.

Showing Up Where Community Gathers

One of the ways ACCA stays connected is by showing up where our neighbors gather. Each year, the Boom Bash Senior Expo gives us the opportunity to listen, share resources, and build relationships face to face.

The event brings together older adults, care partners, and families and features free health screenings, door prizes, and more than 30 vendors offering trusted information, services, and practical resources. From helpful giveaways to meaningful conversations, the day was filled with connection and energy.

We are grateful to Boom, along with our friends at Celebration Village Athens whose support helped make this community-focused event possible.

Celebrating Leadership, Welcoming New Voices

As we reflect on the leadership that guides our mission forward, ACCA extends deep gratitude to Dr. Reginald Woods and Gabe Brauer for their dedicated service on our Board of Directors. Their time, insight, and steady commitment have helped shape our work and strengthen our impact for the people we serve.

We are equally pleased to welcome three new board members, Lori Carroll, Wes Baumgartner, and Wendy Jones. Each brings valuable expertise, perspective, and influence, along with a shared belief in the importance of supporting older adults and care partners across our community. Their dedication reinforces our shared promise to help every neighbor age well and live well, supported by a community that truly cares.

A Gift Rooted in Community Care

Members of Athens Church recently traveled to our office with a generous gift to help care for our older neighbors. This support will ensure older adults in our community have access to meals, transportation, care coordination, and opportunities for connection. When faith communities, nonprofits, and neighbors come together, the result is not just financial support, but trust, belonging, and collective impact.

Celebrating Community at the Mavis Tire Ribbon Cutting

ACCA’s services are designed to reduce isolation, support care partners, and help neighbors remain safe, independent, and engaged as they age. In many cases, this means helping seniors with transport services.

Mavis Tire and Michelin reminded us how much local presence matters during the ribbon cutting for the new store in Jefferson. They gifted ACCA and The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia with a set of new tires to help keep our fleet rolling smoothly and safely. New businesses do more than open their doors; they step into the life of a community, bring people together, and create opportunities to give back.

Finding Joy and Connection with Cognitive Change

Inside ACCA's Meaningful Moments Café

Joan and Dick Clark are two of the “regulars” at ACCA’s Meaningful Moments Cafe. Sipping drinks and enjoying snacks, they engage in lively conversations about their earlier years in Vermont, favorite holiday memories, and what’s happening in their dayto-day lives.

It could be any social gathering on any day with friends and families coming together for stories, activities, and games, but this is a cafe designed for those living with dementia or cognitive change and their care partners.

“We enjoy activities as a couple while socializing,” said Joan, who has been attending meetings and gatherings through ACCA’s Dementia Resource Center since Dick was diagnosed. “It reminds us that joy and connection are still possible. We have fun!”

This year, Joan plans to start a new practice she calls “The Joy Jar.” At the end of every day, she and Dick will discuss what “wins” they experienced, whether it comes in the form

of a surprise, a moment of happiness, or an annoyance that they were able to turn around.

“A family member has already put it into practice, and I thought it was a great idea!”

Joan chose a jar that’s bright orange and has scrapes and marks. Like life, it’s beautiful in its imperfections and still capable of holding joy and sharing it.

“At the end of the year, we’ll pull out the jar and read all of the wonderful things that made us happy!”

Rediscovering Joy Through ACCA's Dementia Resource Center

Dementia can shift lives and shrink social circles, but a diagnosis does not erase the need to belong.

“Our cafes aren’t clinical appointments or a support group defined by grief,” says Erin Wynn, Enrichment Coordinator, Dementia Resource Center. “It is a shared space built around warmth, creativity, and lively

conversation.”

At the cafe, which meets monthly, no one has to explain themselves. Everyone in the room understands because they are navigating similar experiences, so it is safe and supportive.

Lauren Wilson is a long-time ACCA supporter who cares for her husband. She says the cafes create meaningful moments that offer education and awareness, while reminding families that good conversation, laughter, and joy still have a place in their lives.

Creativity as Connection for Those Living with Cognitive Change

Each Meaningful Moments Café includes social activities designed to engage the senses and encourage interaction.

One featured activity invites participants to create Moment Boxes, small personal collections that hold items, memories, and symbols that matter most to them.

Reflection is gently woven throughout, offering space to focus on shared experiences and meaningful relationships rather than loss or limitation.

Care partners often leave feeling lighter, reminded they are not alone. Those living with dementia leave having experienced connection, creativity, and joy in a safe, affirming environment—all brought on by a room filled with music, shared creativity, and understanding. A place where connection continues to thrive.

If you are interested in more information about the Dementia Resource Center and Meaningful Moment Memory Cafes, reach out to Erin at ewynn@accaging.org
