Winter at the Athens Community Council on Aging has wrapped up with the perfect blend of joy, gratitude, and community spirit!

Over the last few months, we’ve been amazed by the generosity of our supporters, welcomed new faces, and celebrated milestones that help us fulfill our mission to age well. Here’s a look back at some of the highlights that made this season so special.

PB&J Drive – A Sweet Success!

Our friends at Synovus made this fall a little more delightful by collecting peanut butter and jelly to support our senior hunger initiatives. Their kindness spread joy and filled pantries, ensuring our neighbors had what they needed for the season. Thank you, Synovus, for making such a meaningful impact!

Welcome Aboard!

We are thrilled to welcome several new faces to the ACCA team this fall. Jennifer, Maggie, Dan, Mallie, and Cam have already made their mark, bringing fresh energy and passion to our work. We can’t wait to see how their contributions will help us grow and better serve our aging community in the year ahead.

A Celebration for All At our October Annual Meeting, we celebrated another successful year and welcomed FOUR incredible new board members, Dr. Grace Bagwell Adams, Carol Williams, Lance McMurray, and Chuck Williams. Their expertise and enthusiasm are sure to make a lasting impact, and we’re so excited to have them on the team.

Turkeypalooza Triumph!

November brought the return of Turkeypalooza, and it was one for the books. Together, we raised over $36,000 in just 10 days. With the generosity of our community, we were able to distribute over 1,500 Thanksgiving meals to our neighbors.

Spreading Holiday Cheer with Be a Santa to a Senior This year’s Be a Santa to a Senior campaign was a heartwarming success! Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community and the hard work of our wrapping elves, we wrapped almost 2000 presents and 800 seniors received presents, bringing brightness and warmth to their holiday season. A huge thank you to everyone who donated gifts, to the partners who gathered presents, and to our primary partner, Home Instead, for their continued support.

Paws, Love, and Will’s Pet Pantry Thanks to PetSmart Charities and the kind hearts of our community, Will’s Pet Pantry was wellstocked for the holidays! This support ensures our seniors and their furry companions can enjoy the comfort and companionship they deserve. We are so grateful for the support and care that makes this possible.

In December, our Center for Active Living (CAL) members packed their bags for an unforgettable trip to Florida. L

ee Epting’s journey into the world of hospitality began not with grand ambition but with a simple act of Southern generosity. It was 1963, and as a pledge of Phi Delta Theta at Emory University, he stepped in to elevate the fraternity’s rush menu. What began as a last-minute effort turned into Epting’s election as steward of the house before he was officially a PDT pledge.

That same sense of initiative and attention to detail would define a lifetime of hospitality that has shaped Athens, the South, and beyond.

Growing up in Athens, where football season was as much about the gatherings as the game, Epting is no stranger to entertaining. “Football parties were a major part of our life,” he recalls. The traditions of Southern hospitality— good food, lively company, and memorable moments—were baked into his upbringing.

By the time he transferred to the University of Georgia in 1965, Epting had turned this knack for hosting into a budding business, organizing chefs for fraternity house kitchens and catering events.

But it was in 1970 that Epting’s vision took a larger shape. Along with a fraternity brother, he restored the old Southern Railway depot on Hoyt Street, creating “The Station,” a complex of restaurants and shops. “The depot became a restaurant and nightclub, offering elegant dining on the 1913 Dining Car Valdosta,” he recounts. With specialty shops, a saloon, and even gas-lit brick streets, The Station became a hub of Athens’ social life. “We had street fairs, fireworks, and great music. The whole place took off like wildfire.”

It was at The Station that Epting’s passion for catering blossomed. He recounts one of his first events: a barbecue for 100 guests. “I brought antique tables and chairs, collards, black-eyed peas, pulled pork, and hot buttered biscuits,” he says. The response was overwhelming. “I served more people in that one event than I had in the restaurant all week.” From that moment,

Trials, Triumphs, and a Commitment to Athens Epting’s journey hasn’t been without challenges.

The Station thrived for years but faced setbacks when the business expanded to North Carolina.

“We moved into a train station with no heat and only cold running water,” he recalls, noting that his wife Bobbie was six months pregnant at the time. When financial difficulties forced them back to Athens, the Eptings rebuilt their business from the ground up, a testament to their resilience and determination. c o n n ec t i o n s m a g a zi n e | 9

In the years that followed, Lee Epting Catering grew into a cornerstone of Athens’ hospitality scene. By the 1996 Olympics, Epting’s team was hosting events that brought Athens’ charm to an international audience. From The Station to his current base on Chase Street, Epting has seen trends change but has always returned to his roots.

“Athens is a small town with big-city advantages,” he says. “The University of Georgia brings cultural and academic opportunities that make this place unique.” For Epting, being a native Athenian is a point of pride and responsibility. “As the Athenian Oath says, ‘It is our responsibility to leave this place as well, if not better, than we found it.’”

A Philosophy of Aging and Living Fully As he approaches 80, Epting reflects on the passage of time with humility and gratitude.

“I look in the mirror and see my grandfather staring back,” he says with a laugh. Yet, his approach to aging is anything but conventional.

“I want to grow older, not old. There’s a big difference.”

For Epting, staying relevant and engaged is essential. “I don’t intend to waste a minute of this precious life. Sharing what I have—whether it’s physical, emotional, or financial—is part of what keeps me going.” He also emphasizes the importance of listening to older generations.

“We want to feel relevant. Sometimes, it’s as simple as asking for advice or letting us share our stories.”

Epting’s philosophy of life boils down to love and gratitude. “To me, God is love, and that’s all I need to know to be at peace with my life,” he says. His motivation? “To live each day passionately, squeeze the most out of every minute, and leave this world a little better than I found it.”

A Legacy of Memories and Hospitality Through 65 years of hosting, catering, and creating, Epting’s impact on Athens is immeasurable. From preserving historic landmarks like The Station (now home to the Athens Community Council on Aging) to sharing Southern culture on global stages, he’s left an indelible mark.

“I hope the experiences we’ve created bring smiles to future generations,” he says. “Our goal has always been to offer more than a meal—we aim to create lasting memories, all in the spirit of Southern hospitality.”

For Lee Epting, hospitality is more than a business–it’s a calling. And for those lucky enough to know him, his life is a testament to the power of generosity, resilience, and love for one’s community.

thens is known for its vibrant and unique culinary scene, featuring an array of diverse cuisines and an awardwinning, one-of-a-kind craft beer trail. In 2024, the restaurant scene in Athens grew with the addition of new restaurants, such as Osteria Olio and San Angel Cocina and Cantina.

Award nominations abound, with Chef Pete Amadhairundr of Puma Yu’s being named a semi-finalist of the James Beard Awards 2024 Restaurant and Chef Awards.

Thanks to talented culinary geniuses, we enjoy opportunities to indulge in limitless types of cuisine here in the Classic City. But, have you ever wondered how the restaurant scene in Athens came to life? Grab your favorite treat and take a seat as we explore two restaurants rooted in Athens’ culinary history: the Mayflower Restaurant and ADD Drug.

The Mayflower Restaurant 1948 was a tumultuous year for the U.S. - Harry Truman won the United States Presidency in the greatest election upset in U.S. history, the Georgia Museum of Art is housed in the basement of the old library on UGA’s North Campus, and a diner on Broad Street owned by Clarence Fulcher has just opened its doors. The Mayflower Restaurant sat just across the street from the Arch and was known for “putting the South in your mouth” with a menu that featured fried chicken, turnip greens, and all the Southern fixings.

Fast forward to 1963 - the Vaughn family took over the restaurant, where they served piping hot and fresh country breakfasts to Athenians and tourists alike. Ricky Vaughn started to work

to enjoy a home-cooked meal while attending UGA still visited the restaurant years after their departure from the Athens area.

In early 2020, the beloved restaurant temporarily shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. By October 2020, the restaurant operated only four days a week, serving lunch and dinner. After nearly 75 years of putting the South in Athens’ mouth, the Mayflower Restaurant closed its doors in 2023, signaling the end of an era on Broad Street. The rich fellowship shared among family, friends, and strangers alike over a hot meal fostered by the Mayflower Restaurant for 75 years is unforgettable and irreplaceable. c o n n ec t i o ns m a g a zi n e | 17

ACCA's Turkeypalooza 2024

Local Organizations Setting the Table for All he holiday season is supposed to be a joyful time for all, filled with laughter and cheer as family and friends near and far gather around a table to enjoy a warm, delicious holiday meal. However, this is not as easy for every neighbor as it may seem. According to data from Feeding America, an estimated 17,330 neighbors face food insecurity every day in Athens-Clarke County. Out of those 17,330 neighbors, 1 in 5 are Athens-Clarke County older adults who are at-risk for hunger every single day.

Local organizations and dedicated volunteers banded together during the 2024 holiday season to set the table and spread love to all AthensClarke County residents and their families.

ACCA’s Turkeypalooza 135 Hoyt St, Athens, GA ACCA’s Turkeypalooza 2024 was a smashing success! The $32,000 fundraising goal was surpassed, with a total of $36,949 funds raised.

These funds were used to purchase turkeys and all the fixings, which provided more than 1,500 Thanksgiving meals to seniors and their families. The funds not only go toward funding Thanksgiving meals but also fund ACCA’s senior hunger initiatives for the entire year. Thanks to the generous support of our community, ACCA was able to ensure that older adults and their families had a full table this Thanksgiving.

pantries gave neighbors the opportunity to receive a month’s worth of nourishing food in a drive-thru fashion. In past holiday seasons, the Food Bank has teamed up with local restaurants such as J. Christopher’s, where a portion of the proceeds from lattes and pancakes purchased at the restaurant were donated to the Food Bank.

The Sparrow’s Nest hosted an annual Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving Day, Chuck’s Fish, located in Downtown Athens, where neighbors enjoyed a buffet-style lunch hosted a Thanksgiving Feast from 11 a.m. to 3 and received a free bag of hygiene items with p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. There was no charge the help of local agencies, organizations, and to attend the dinner. All proceeds from the sponsors. Weaver D’s Delicious Fine Foods 1016 E Broad St, Athens, GA

First Presbyterian Church of Athens hosted “Holiday Meals on Wheels” and partnered with ACCA’s Meals on Wheels program to deliver meals on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day to area neighbors. The church covered the cost of the meals on these holidays, and the meal delivery has become a popular family event in the community.

Weaver D’s hosted Feed the Hungry: Thanksgiving Day Dinner. At the 2024 event, Weaver D’s held a gospel singing event at noon, following dinner at 2 p.m. The 2024 Thanksgiving Day Dinner was held in memory of Wyatt Sean Banks, a Kappa Sigma - Beta Lambda chapter brother, and a 2023 Thanksgiving Day Dinner volunteer.

The way that local organizations and volunteers came together to combat food insecurity not just during the holiday season, but throughout 2024, The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia partnered was awe-inspiring. From nonprofits to restaurants, alongside 225 member food pantries, community everyone played an important role in bringing kitchens, senior centers, and other nonprofit nutritious, warm meals and meaningful fellowship organizations across 15 counties in 2024. Dementia Resource Center (DRC) Dementia Friendly activities and events will be marked with the DRC Symbol.

These events offer a supportive and inclusive environment for individuals living with dementia through means of smaller class sizes, trained professionals and volunteers, and the Montessori for Dementia approach.

The Dementia Resource Center is currently grant-funded by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). All programming and services are provided at no cost to grant participants through June 2026.

GA Museum of Art Tour and Workshop Join us at the Georgia Museum of Art for a guided tour and art-making experience exploring the many ways that acts of love and care show up in our daily lives. Participants will explore works of art that reflect different aspects of care in our relationships and discuss how we care for, and are cared by, those we love. Following the discussion, participants will have the opportunity to create art that expresses care or reflects how they feel love. This is a chance to engage in meaningful reflection, therapeutic creation, and connection with others.

Tallulah Gorge State Park Hike Tallulah Gorge is one of the largest and most stunning canyons in the eastern U.S., spanning two miles in length and 1,000 feet deep! We'll visit the Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center to learn about the rich history of this Victorian town, followed by a 3-mile roundtrip North Rim Trail hike, crossing the iconic suspension bridge for breathtaking views of the Tallulah Gorge and several waterfalls. Build your own Adirondack chair to rest and relax in whenever you visit ACCA! This is a great opportunity to build your DIY skills, gain pride in your hard work, and spend time with others who are experiencing the dementia journey. Educational Office Hours – Therapeutic Rehabilitation for Dementia Find out more about neurological rehabilitation, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, from Patty Hopaluk, PT of Athens Neuro & Balance Rehabilitation. These therapies can help improve and maintain function, decrease the impact of dementia symptoms, and improve the quality of life of the person living with dementia and their care partner. Senior Advocacy at the State Capitol Are you passionate about helping seniors receive the services and support they need? Want to know which legislative issues are most pressing and how to lend your voice? Join ACCA’s advocacy delegation to discuss the priority items for 2025 in preparation for our visit to the Georgia Capitol in February. The Georgia Council on Aging hosts this annual state-wide event to meet with our district and state representatives. AARP Driver Safety Course AARP’s driver safety course gives you the confidence and knowledge you need to stay safe on the road. A certificate is issued to participants upon completion, which may be submitted to your auto insurance companies - some companies may give a discount.
