N RDIC PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Hello Vikings!

I hope everyone is having a great summer so far. I’m sure you know that the start of school is just around the corner so it’s time for you to start mentally preparing. I’m very excited about the upcoming school year. This will be my second year at Johansen and I can’t wait for everyone to see how we can make it even better than last year.

THE BEST WAY TO HAVE A GREAT HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE IS TO GET INVOLVED.

We have high expectations for the 2014-2015 school year so students, be ready to come and work hard. Last year we started the year with the simple goal of making Johansen High School the best high school in Modesto and I believe we are well on our way. I have already seen improvements in our academics, athletics, attendance, safety, and most importantly Viking Pride! The teachers and staff here at Johansen are working tirelessly to make Johansen the premiere high school in the area. The best way to have a great high school experience is to get involved. Here at Johansen we have several activities, clubs, and sports to choose from so don’t be left out. It is a proven fact that the more a student is involved in school, the better they will do academically. Since we are committed to preparing all students for life after high school, whether it is college or the job market, I am strongly encouraging students to expand their horizons and try something new.

Get involved!

The first thing students need to do in order to be prepared for the upcoming school year is go to Round-Up. Round-Up is a chance for students get back on campus in a casual way and get what they need to start the school year right. I strongly encourage everyone to come at their designated time listed in this newsletter.

Remember, I have high expectations for everyone at Johansen, students and staff. This year we will all be prepared to show the respect we have for each other and our school proving to Modesto that VIKING PRIDE is alive and well at Johansen High School!

FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE If your student will need to have medication at school next year, this is a good time to make a doctor’s appointment to update the medication authorization form for the 2014-15 school year. All pills and oral medications should be brought to the school Health Office in the prescription or original container with label. Please mark all over the counter medications with your students’ name. It is sometimes helpful to ask the pharmacy for a second labeled bottle if you are keeping part of the prescription at home. Medications in plastic bags cannot be accepted at school.

As a reminder, no medications may be carried by the student except for asthma rescue inhalers, and Epi-pens for severe allergic reactions.

Also, if your student has a medical condition that requires an emergency care plan while at school, please contact the school nurse to set a time to talk about your students’ needs. All information is shared only with teachers and adults on campus who need to know to keep your student safe.

The Modesto City Schools Medication Authorization Form that can be used by your doctor to authorization medications is available online at www.mcs4kids.com, go to departments, Special Education and Health Services. In the right-hand corner you may download the forms. All medications need a new authorization each year.

FROM THE SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST Grief is often misunderstood and overlooked. Many times our youth act out or misbehave because they aren’t sure how to deal with the emotions they are feeling due to a loss or difficult struggle that they are facing in life. Too often unresolved grief follows our youth into adulthood, causing ongoing challenges for them. That is where Community Hospice comes in to fill the gap, by offering individual support and grief groups. Since 1995 Community Hospice has assisted hundreds of youth in our Central Valley come to terms with losses that have occurred in their lives.

Next school year Hospice will be offering grief groups and individual counseling at Johansen.

Groups will last about 8 weeks long and will cover several topics as they relate to the grieving process.

If you know if any students that have suffered a loss this school year and think they could benefit from something like this, let the counseling office know and they can put them in contact with Hospice to get it set up. Otherwise, please keep an ear out for students that may be a good fit for this offering in the fall.

JOHANSEN HIGH SCHOOL DRESS CODE Johansen has adopted a site specific dress code for the school. In an effort to increase student safety and curb class disturbance the (School Safety Committee) has added the following to the currently existing MCS conduct code.

FROM THE OFFICE OF SUPERVISION Read this before you go shopping!

Dear Johansen Families, My name is David Rogers and I’m the Assistant Principal in charge of discipline. I want to strongly encourage you to please take a moment and familiarize yourself with the site specific dress code or better yet take it with you when you go shopping.

Every year my office has the task of making sure students come appropriately dressed for school and we need your help to make that happen! We have a dress code to keep students focused on their education and not what each other are wearing.

Maintaining a standard of dress for our students prepares them for the demands of the work world where future employers will expect their employees to dress appropriately for the job. I wanted to give you this information now so when you buy clothes for you students they will arrive properly dress and ready for success. We practice progressive discipline at Johansen and at first your student will be given verbal warnings but that will quickly increase to other forms of discipline. I sincerely hope, by you having a conversation with your student we can avoid the need for me or my staff to call home and hold your student out of class while you bring them a change of clothes. I’m looking forward to the new school year and thank you for your support in this matter.

A. STUDENT CONDUCT CODES, K-12:

Any dress, grooming, or appearance, which disrupts, or tends to disrupt the educational process, or affect the health or safety of individuals, shall be prohibited (Educational Code 48900, sub-section k; 35161, 35183, 35291.5, 35294.1; C.A.C Title V, Section 302; and Board Policy 5135, 5135.1, and 5137).

• Any attire/paraphernalia/symbol that signifies gang affiliation will not be allowed on campus.

• Any attire/paraphernalia/symbol that displays a logo or other message promoting alcohol or controlled substances, promoting violence, illegal activity, or relating to gangs may not be worn on campus.

B. HEAD COVERING Hats, caps, beanies and other head coverings are prohibited during regular school hours except as specifically authorized by a school official for such school activities as athletics and theatrical performances or other approved personal reasons such as health needs.

Hooded sweatshirts that conceal identity are not permitted.

• During inclement weather students may wear school authorized beanies/knit caps outdoors. Authorized beanies/knit caps are solid white, grey, black, purple or Johansen B. PROHIBITED APPAREL: (Approved by the School Safety Committee): • Students may wear only one article of red or blue clothing.

• Solid red or blue shirts or tops are not allowed, even if it is the only article of red or blue clothing.

• No shirts will be allowed with writing or symbols referring to drugs or alcohol (ex.

Thizz, Mack Dre, Hyphy) • Red or Blue Belts or Buckles with stenciled letters will not be allowed • No Nike Cortez shoes are to be worn • No red or blue shoestrings or hair scrunches.

• All custom/personally designed t-shirts or any other article of clothing must have prior approval from Administration before being worn on campus (i.e. R.I.P. memorial shirts, spirit shirts, etc…)

• Student may not wear batting gloves.

• Student may not wear under-the-knee, short pants worn with knee high socks.

• Students are not to wear directional clothing ex. Nor- Cal, No-Cal, No-Cali, Nor-Cali, South Pole or Skin Industries on clothing.

• No Cali shirts with oversized red stars • Area codes are not allowed on clothing or backpacks.

• Students may only wear black rosaries.

• No “Mud flap” haircuts. Mongolian haircuts are not allowed.

• No Shaved notches in/on Eyebrows • No Steel Toed Boots • Chains are not allowed at school such as belt or wallet, etc.

• No “Rags”, Cloths, Towels of any color around the neck.

• No famous Stars and Straps in Red or Blue • No Three-point or five point crowns • No “flagging” any item displayed on or about the body.

• No LRG Shirts with references to narcotics • No RED or BLUE clothing if the student is on the site authorized “AT RISK” list. All shades of red and blue.

• No Baseball Caps • Make-up must not be disruptive or distracting to the educational process.

• No shirts with another color stitched underneath and sticking out at the sleeves and collar • Shirts shall not be longer than fingertip length and not overly large Revised 10/13

FROM THE COUNSELING OFFICE Greetings Parents: Welcome to a new school year! I am the new Pupil Services, Assistant Principal at Johansen High School, and I am excited to be provided with the opportunity to serve you and your student. I have been in education for fourteen years and for the past five years have worked as a Program Manager for the Special Education Office with Modesto City Schools.

I have been fortunate to work with many knowledgeable and talented people throughout the District from elementary, junior high and high schools alike. I look forward to working with the dedicated staff at Johansen by providing your students with the best education that they deserve.

One of my main objectives is to ensure that as parents, your concerns are addressed and your voices are heard. Should you have any questions or issues, please know that the staff and I are here to assist, help and support. IMPORTANT FORMS Within this packet there is a lot of very important information about the beginning of school, so please make sure you go through it all. The first thing you should look for is the Free and Reduced Lunch form. Please take a moment to fill out the lunch form and return it back to us. Regardless of whether or not your child qualifies for free or reduced lunch, we ask that you please fill it out and return it to school with your child, mail it back to us or drop it off to our office.

The District is asking for all lunch forms to be completed and returned by the end of August.

Please help Johansen make this happen.
