ANNUAL REPORT

2020-2021

A Letter FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Our 153rd year was not easy for anyone but, despite the pandemic, we have much to celebrate! Our students and families demonstrated amazing resilience, determination, and fortitude. When I first came to Holy Cross in 2013, I asked what makes Holy Cross special. Our alumnae, faculty, parents, and students all shared with me that Holy Cross’ most distinctive characteristic was the sense of family Our family isn’t perfect. We struggle. We get on each other’s nerves. But we are family, bound by all our passions and shared values. The word “family” has a significant and special meaning at Holy Cross. Family means belonging, connectedness, love, respect, and support. Above all else, during the past year, the Holy Cross family embraced and lifted each other up as only a family can do. During the 2020-2021 school year inspired by Blessed Basil Moreau and driven by a sense of hope, we prioritized supporting and loving our Holy Cross community and Holy Cross friendships. We are deeply grateful for your support and generosity, especially during these unprecedented times. Thanks to the loyal donors listed on these pages, the 2020-2021 Fund for Holy Cross topped $500,000. You inspire us to deliver the quality education that allows our empowered girls to excel and thrive in college and beyond. Your generous giving year after year allows us to do things that would otherwise not be possible Please know that our entire school community joins us in saying thank you for keeping the mission first established in 1868 by the Sisters of the Holy Cross alive today and well into the future. I am proud to be part of the Holy Cross family and celebrate the generosity of so many who have lifted us up during such an uncertain time. I look forward to working together to celebrate even brighter days. Sincerely,

Kathleen R. Prebble President and CEO

“I am convinced that Providence, which has in the past done everything necessary for the development and perfection of its work, will continue to bestow on it most abundant blessings. To ensure this, we must be constantly animated by the spirit of zeal and generosity which so holy an undertaking requires.” CIRCULAR LETTER 9 – BLESSED BASIL MOREAU

MISSION STATEMENT The Academy of the Holy Cross, a Catholic college preparatory school sponsored by the Sisters of the Holy Cross since 1868, is dedicated to educating young women in a Christ-centered community which values diversity. The Academy is committed to developing women of courage, compassion and scholarship who responsibly embrace the social, spiritual and intellectual challenges of the world.

A Letter FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Happy Holiday, one and all! During this season of gratitude, the board is so very grateful to all who assisted in navigating the Academy to the other side of the bridge. Your unrelenting attention to detail kept the school open by virtual and hybrid sessions. You kept our girls safe, all the while continuing to educate and nurture their body, mind and spirit. Your unrelenting commitment, courage, patience, and trust enabled us to span the past 18 months, not with ease but with spirit. Today, the Academy is fully back and with some hard-earned wisdom and pride gleaned from the pandemic experience. Since graduating from the Academy, I have not had the occasion to tour the school while classes were in session. Recently with Katy Prebble, I did just that. Due to pandemic protocols the classroom doors were open, and as we walked the halls, we were able to get a glimpse of Holy Cross in action. I was proud and impressed with the students, their enthusiasm, and their interaction with their teachers. I was also proud of the positive learning environment and how our Catholic traditions and spirituality have been woven into the school life. Then, on November 10 at the Open House, it happened again. This time it was the students who were filled with pride and showed it as they guided prospective families through the corridors while sharing their stories about school life. They were very poised young women one minute, and when on a break, they were just kids laughing and enjoying each other’s company. I was also inspired by the passion of the teachers, and their empathy and understanding of the impact of the pandemic on the students. Seeing how happy the students are to be back urges them on. I was also amazed how the entire community supported this one event, showcasing all that is so special about Holy Cross. For one who graduated in the class of ’61. It was a “back to the future” moment for me. Speaking of the future, the board is so grateful for your contributions to the #EmpoweredGirls campaign, helping to make the Academy even better. The first project completed is the ADA work at the student entrance area. It integrates well with the school’s architecture. The latest unveiling of plans is the proposed design of the Athletic and Wellness Center. It is stunning and functional while promoting health and wellness for our students. This is a very exciting time for the Academy and my experiences outside the board room confirms it takes a village to raise a child, and in Holy Cross’ case a cadre of talented, dedicated people. We are blessed. As a Sister of the Holy Cross, I am proud and grateful. A line from scripture comes to mind, “See I am making all things new.” Thank you for your friendship, continued interest, support, and prayers for the school. May your Christmas be blessed with the Peace of Christ and a grace-filled New Year,

Sister Ruth Marie Nickerson, CSC ’61 Board Chair

WE ARE HOLY CROSS

We began the 2020-2021 academic year a little differently, but together with a lot of determination and flexibility, we are enjoying a new normal at Holy Cross.

After months of virtual classes, it was great to be back on campus. Although facemasks hid those beautiful Tartan smiles, the joy of being together made the minor inconveniences of facemasks and continual hand-washing well worth it! Events were a little different - we enjoyed a virtual Gala, Santa arrived in a purple truck for a drive-by visit, and Zoom was our most popular communication tool. Holy Cross is blessed with an outstanding faculty and staff, and each member of the team worked incredibly hard to make the year as comfortable and productive as possible for our students. They strived to do their best – and they did! They worked hard, got into the best colleges and universities, received over $17 million in college scholarship opportunities, and enjoyed in-person classes. A pandemic couldn’t stop our Tartans, proving that our students are empowered women of courage, compassion and scholarship! The 2020-2021 theme for the Holy Cross Fund was “We Are Holy Cross!” We are so very grateful for the generous support of our alums, friends, and parents – both current and former parents – who opened their hearts and their wallets for the Academy. Without your support, we would not be able to give our students a Holy Cross education – one rich in academics, arts, and athletics. Every gift to Holy Cross is directed to our most critical needs and every gift benefits what is most important, our students! Your support also allows the Academy to continue our STEM and scholars programs and tuition assistance so that every girl has the opportunity to be part of this wonderful community. Of course we also want to extend thanks to those of you who have made a commitment of a gift or pledge to our #EmpoweredGirls campaign. If you would like to learn more about our plans, please contact Charly Ryan at 301-929-6447 or cryan@academyoftheholycross.org. This is a very exciting time for the school - we invite you to be part of it!

On behalf of The Academy of the Holy Cross, thank you!

WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS Over 75 percent of the Academy’s annual expenditures are for financial aid and employee salaries and benefits, both of which are directly related to our primary responsibility of educating students. The remaining 25% of expenditures include maintenance of our physical plant, program expenses including technology, and service on our debt. Tuition and fees alone do not cover the costs of providing an Academy education. We must rely on other sources including rentals, which decreased this year due to pandemic cancellations and closings, and income from our investments, which benefited from strong financial markets. Most importantly, however, we rely on the generosity of our donors whose gifts to the Holy Cross Fund and the #EmpoweredGirls campaign are essential to our continued success. For 2021-2022, challenges remain. Students are back full-time and their needs continue to grow. As predicted, this year the school’s financial aid budget increased by over 15% from 2019-2020 because of pandemic special needs and requests. Competition for faculty will stay strong because of teacher shortages and retirements, and we need to continue to provide attractive salaries and benefits. Please help us to provide our students with the faculty, staff, facilities, and financial aid that they deserve in these difficult times. Your support is what makes that possible.

This 2020-2021 Annual Report covers contributions to the Academy’s Holy Cross Fund for annual giving, Endowment, The Difference We Make and #EmpoweredGirls campaigns, and the Benefit Auction & Gala received between June 1, 2020 and May 31, 2021. The Academy is grateful for the invaluable generosity of our donors, including those who have chosen not to have their names published herein. Thank you for making Holy Cross a priority in your charitable giving.

The Academy of the Holy Cross does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national or ethnic origin in its educational policy, personnel policies, admission policies, scholarship and financial aid programs, or other school-administered programs.

WHY I GIVE Msgr. “Fr. John” Enzler The Academy of the Holy Cross has been a part of my family long before I was born. Sister Thomas Aquinas, CSC, a long-time fixture at Holy Cross, was a second cousin to our family. My five older sisters attended Holy Cross, and my younger sister was the sixth. Three attended the Upton Street campus and three attended the Kensington campus. They enjoyed the sisters and the lay teachers. I have witnessed many young women from different parishes (St. Bartholomew, Little Flower, Our Lady of Mercy, Blessed Sacrament, and Our Lady of

Lourdes) enjoy a spectacular education at Holy Cross. I'm happy to contribute to a great school and a place that has served my family so well. As a brother to six alumnae, a pastor to hundreds of young women who have attended Holy Cross over the years, and a huge believer in Catholic education, I am honored to be able to support the school, its mission, and its leadership in our community. Always happy to help a success story!

WHY WE GIVE Bill and Linda Horstman Kirvan ’61 We are both products of the Washington area Catholic school system and we value the opportunities, education and strong moral direction that we received. Being able to help towards that opportunity for our family and others is important to us. Helping Holy Cross to continue their mission to provide excellence in academic achievement, good sportsmanship and fair play in athletics, and extensive opportunities in extra-curricular activities and service projects is a way for us to recognize the sacrifices our parents made for us.

WAYS OF GIVING

Your support of Holy Cross is more important than ever! If you find yourself in a position to help—we need, welcome, and greatly appreciate it. Consider the following ways that help you AND Holy Cross.

CARES ACT

There are significant tax incentives for charitable giving through provisions in the CARES Act that have been extended through the end of 2021. Individuals taking the standard deduction can claim an additional deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions directly to operating charities, while married couples filing jointly can claim up to $600. Donors who itemize deductions may elect a CARES Act 100% of AGI deduction limit for cash contributed directly to operating charities, and deduction amounts above this limit may be carried over for up to five tax years. In addition, the annual deduction limit for cash contributions by a business stays at 25% of taxable income instead of reverting back to the 10% cap. Note that CARES Act incentives are not applicable for contributions to donor-advised funds, supporting organizations, or private foundations.

MATCHING GIFTS

Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees. The impact of your gift maybe doubled! Contact your employer for matching gift information.

BEQUESTS AND TRUSTS

Bequests and charitable trusts are a wonderful way to help the Academy in perpetuity. Contact your financial planner or legal counsel for ways you can help Holy Cross through your will, retirement plan, a charitable remainder or charitable lead trust.

GIFTS OF STOCKS OR APPRECIATED SECURITIES

Gifts of stocks or securities are a great way to receive a tax deduction and eliminate capital gains taxes. Please contact the Advancement Office for transfer instructions to make a gift of appreciated assets. Written correspondence in the form of a letter or email to the Advancement Office indicating that the transfer will be taking place is greatly appreciated for tracking purposes.

UNITED WAY & CFC

The Academy of the Holy Cross is a proud member of both the Combined Federal Campaign and United Way of the National Capital Area. Please contact the Advancement Office if you have designated your gift through UWNCA #9182 or CFC #83484.

GIVING FROM YOUR IRA

If you are age 70½ and have an IRA, consider taking a QCD (Qualified Charitable Distribution) from your account. Take advantage of not paying Medicare or Social Security taxes while making a dramatic impact to Holy Cross. While you should certainly contact your financial planner for advice, here are three steps to make it happen: 1.

2. 3.

Use the IRA distribution forms provided by your IRA custodian and a letter to direct that a distribution be made to The Academy of the Holy Cross at the following address: Office of Institutional Advancement, The Academy of the Holy Cross, 4920 Strathmore Avenue, Kensington, MD 20895 Make sure the cover letter specifically request that your IRA custodian (a) memorialize your name and address as the donor of record in connection with this transfer, and (b) copy you on the transmittal. Email or fax a copy of your IRA distribution and your transmittal letter to Charly Ryan, cryan@academyoftheholycross.org or fax 301-929-1273 18

THANKS TO YOU,

we’re making some changes at Holy Cross! The #EmpoweredGirls capital campaign is underway and going strong! Thanks to the generosity of our parents, alumnae and friends, we have begun to make critical changes to the campus by creating accessibility to all that is welcoming and inclusive. And that’s just the beginning. As we move forward with our fundraising efforts to construct a beautiful new Athletic & Wellness Center, create additional parking, and continue to enhance the campus facilities, we continue to reach out to our members of our community for financial support to reach our $4.5M goal. The addition of this wonderful facility, along with other campus enhancements, will allow our girls, along with our entire community, more opportunities than ever before. Join us as we continue to move forward in this important initiative. For more information about the campaign or if you are interested in making a gift, please contact Charly Ryan in the Advancement Office (301-929-6447 or cryan@academyoftheholycross.org). We extend our grateful appreciation to the following donors who have made gifts or pledges to the #EmpoweredGirls campaign.

Annual GIVING 2021 BENEFIT AUCTION & GALA

The 2021 Benefit Auction & Gala on March 20, 2021 was a unique and successful event. Tartan Madness was broadcast live from the AHC gym and was hosted by math teacher Barbara Dobbs and varsity basketball coach Walter Gray. Guests watched from home as auction items were bid, paddles were raised, and school spirit was amplified. Thanks to everyone who made Tartan Madness a success, including our sponsors, advertisers, generous donors, volunteers and supporters. The enthusiasm for “Fund-A-Need” bidding was one of the highlights of the night, raising $43,000 for student financial assistance.

WHY WE GIVE Tim and Mary Agnes McAuliffe Rogers ’80

We support Holy Cross because the Sisters of the Holy Cross created a welcoming community for Mary Agnes’ parents, ourselves, our children, and many of our cousins. Through Holy Cross traditions, her students continue to be loved, spiritually fed, and academically challenged. If you are a current Holy Cross girl reading this note, wrap yourself in a virtual embrace, know that the alumnae love you, Jesus loves you, and now go do your homework.
