Dear Parents & Students, Throughout its 136 year history, Academy of the Holy Angels has striven to educate young women to reach the fullness of their potential through programs and activities that are academically challenging, value centered, innovative and fun.

In the spirit of this philosophy it is our pleasure to offer “Summerfare at Holy Angels”, a unique experience in the arts, academics, crafts, communications and more, available to girls entering fifth through ninth grade, on the campus of Holy Angels.

New this year, Summerfare now offers courses over a five week period!

Fashion Design

Comprehensive COOP Review

The COOP is coming! COOP classes, listed below, are for students entering 8th grade and applying to Catholic high schools.

For Mathematics $250

8:15–9:15am or 9:15–10:15am Instructor: Pat Prucnel This 2-week course will provide extensive review in the mathematical section only of the COOP exam. In addition to reviewing arithmetic, number theory and problem solving, students will measure academic achievement through sample practice tests given in class.

For Reading and Language $250 8:15–9:15am or 9:15–10:15am Instructor: Anna May Thurchak

This 2-week course is designed to provide instruction and review in reading and language arts, in preparation for the COOP exam. Sample exams in these areas will be reviewed to help measure academic achievement and aptitude.

Style and Stud

$250 + $30 fee for supplies Week 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, Morning Instructor: Carrie Chung ’13 It’s summertime so why not start it off with style? Grab your old jeans and shirts and let’s design studded shorts, fringed tanks, tie-dyed shirts and more! Create your own personalized designs as a perfect gift to give to friends over the summer. Bring your own clothes to design. Tools, materials, and one AHA t-shirt provided.

Jeweled Angels

$250 + $25 fee for supplies Week 3 or 4, Morning or Afternoon Instructor: Morgan Buckey ’13 Can’t afford to buy that necklace you really love? Make your own! You will learn basic techniques of making beaded jewelry and friendship bracelets.You will also learn new techniques to add to your basic repertoire of jewelry making, creating very unique and sophisticated bracelets and necklaces.

DIY Fashion

COURSES FOR FAShiONiStAS! Fashion Design

$250 + $16 fee for supplies Week 5, Morning Instructor: Christine Wraga DeGennaro Imagine designing your own clothing line!

This class will focus on the creative development of fashion illustration skills.

You’ll learn how to draw different types of clothing on the figure, including dresses, pants, blouses and skirts, using colored pencils and markers. Then, create your own design illustrations and invent a line of clothing based on a single theme.

Use printmaking to create some textile designs too! This class also deals with coordinating color and trim details. No sewing is involved.

$250 + $40 fee for supplies Week 2 or 5, Afternoon Instructor: Carina Crabbe ’15 Don’t waste old clothes – turn them into something new! This course teaches you how to turn old t-shirts, jeans, and shoes into something that looks brand new! Each day you will learn a different way to turn various items of clothing from something old into something that uniquely expresses you.

You might want to make your ugly t-shirt into a cute modern tank top, add studs to your worn out converse, or turn your too-small jeans into a purse. This will save a lot of old clothes from being thrown out and when everyone asks where you got your new shirt or shoes, you’ll be proud to say you made it yourself!

MAStER COMMUNiCAtORS AND FUtURE LEADERS Never Argue with an Angel

$250 Week 1, Morning Instructor: Gail Fair Win every argument by learning to see both sides. Energy, focus and enthusiasm are a must for this course! Gail Fair, AHA Debate Team moderator, will lead students through formal debate techniques and prepare them to be successful in any debate!

Communication Central

$250 Week 2, 3, 4 or 5, Morning Instructor: Ryan Moran ’11 Language is at the core of everything we do in life. Without speech and language we would have no way of communicating our needs and desires on a daily basis! In this fun filled course students will learn how babies learn to talk, and then as they get older learn to put certain sounds together to make words and sentences. We’ll also discover why people from different places speak with different accents!

Women in the Media

$250 Week 4 or 5, Morning Instructor: Jennifer Krajewski ’09 This is a course for girls who are interested in the field of gender and the depictions of women in the media (TV, Film, Print, etc).

We will cover some of the key concepts from the Communications field while utilizing visual texts in our discussions.

This course aims to give students the tools to decipher gendered media messages and an awareness of the ways in which our society constructs the female identity.

Tomorrow’s Leaders

$250 + $15 fee for supplies Week 1, 2, 3 or 4, Morning or Afternoon Instructor: Ashlin Twardzik ’14 Be empowered to be the best leader you can be! Students will learn how to reach their potential through effective leadership

training in areas like team building, strategic planning, decision making, and more. This course will help build up the confidence needed to advocate for yourself, your school, and your community – a powerful quality that ensures success in your future!

Live, Laugh, Lead!

$250 Week 5, Morning or Afternoon Instructor: Emily DeRubertis ’15 Calling all future leaders! Come and learn the skills essential to becoming an effective, powerful leader in high school, college, and beyond! We will develop your team-building, communication, and decision-making skills through many different activities during the week. We’ll also talk about what it means to be a leader and the goals, values, and ethics of a true leader. Be prepared to become a more influential and confident leader than ever before! Bring a notebook, a pen/pencil, and an open mind!

Oh, Behave! Etiquette for the 21st Century

$250 + $10 fee for supplies Week 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, Morning Instructors: Emmalee Brizzolara ’05 (week 1), Stacie Rinda ’14 (weeks 2-5) Learn the essential rules of proper etiquette: how to “meet and greet” people, the “art of conversation”, proper table manners, online etiquette and how to politely stand up for yourself in different situations. We’ll end with a formal tea party on the last day!

Oh Behave! Etiquette for the 21st Century

GEt yOUR BODy MOviNG! Cheer Perfection! $250

Week 1, 2, 3 or 4, Morning or Afternoon Instructors: Caroline Santolli ’14, Toni Luciano ’14 Cheer is one of America’s fastest growing sports. Modern cheer isn’t about being on the sidelines of a football or basketball game – it’s about athletes dancing, performing stunts and tumbling in fast paced routines. Students will learn several main focus skills such as cheers, motions, jumps, and dance. Please wear a t-shirt, stretchy shorts, socks, and sneakers with your hair pulled back in a ponytail. Don’t forget healthy snacks and a water bottle.

The Dance Team Experience $250

Week 2, 3 or 4, Morning or Afternoon Instructor: Jenny Sweet Angels Leap Higher! Experience a challenging intensive with the nationallyranked AHA Dance Team coach. If you love to dance and are committed to developing your jazz and pom technique, then this is the class for you! Throughout the workshop you will increase flexibility and strength, drill jazz fundamentals and advanced skills, and learn innovative choreography. Push yourself to the limit in this rewarding and empowering dance intensive that concludes with a performance for family and friends. All levels welcome!

Please wear form-fitting clothing and jazz shoes, socks, or bare feet.

Burn the Floor! $250

Week 1, 2, 3 or 4, Morning Instructor: Jen Goodell Impress everyone at the next school dance or family wedding with your fabulous dance moves. Students will learn the basics of waltz, foxtrot, swing, cha-cha, rumba, and tango. These basic ballroom dances will have you gliding through life, no matter what your personal soundtrack is! Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes!

Namaste $250 + $30 fee for supplies Week 2, Morning Instructor: Camila Nicasio ’15 A calm and relaxing home away from home that will open your senses and knowledge about your surroundings.

Namaste is a yoga-oriented class that introduces exciting yoga poses, awesome things you thought you couldn’t do with your body, and knowledge of how to treat your body like a queen. So come and get to know yourself in the most magical way, and you too will say, Namaste!

Please bring a yoga mat, towel and water.

Treble with Me! $250

Week 2, 3, 4 or 5, Afternoon Instructor: Ryan Moran ’11 Learn all about Irish Step Dancing, from the roots and origins to the music and costumes. This course will take you on a journey through Ireland, its culture, and how Irish Dancing has evolved into the phenomena it is today. You will even learn a few steps to show off! It is perfect for anyone who is interested in learning about their heritage or even for someone who has heard about Irish Dancing and is looking to learn something new.

PhOtOGRAPhy AND FiLM Digital Photography

$250 + $40 fee for supplies Week 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, Morning Instructor: Melissa Sukalo Do you ever feel overwhelmed by all the different functions of your digital camera?

This class will teach you various photography techniques. Each student will need to have a working digital camera each day.

Hollywood Angels $250

Week 3, Morning or Afternoon Instructor: Jon Burklund In this week-long course, students will explore every step it takes to make a short (5-10 minute) film in which every girl will act, write, direct, and produce. Starting with a blank page, the group will brainstorm the genre and events of the film and collaboratively write the script. Next, acting and character exercises will prepare each girl for her performance on screen. Then, it’s time to plan the film shoot using storyboards, before filming the movie on the Holy Angels campus. After making collective decisions on how to edit and score the film, there will be a final screening for family and friends. This hands-on learning experience will be a fun and educational mix of learning how the largest film industry in the world is run, while letting creative juices flow freely. If you’ve always wanted to be in movies, or ever wondered what it’s like to be behind the camera, this course is for you.

Film: A Visual Culture $250 Week 1, 2, 4 or 5, Morning or Afternoon Instructor: Elizabeth Friedman ’12 This crash-course in film & film-making will cover everything from the science and mechanics of film and animation technology, as well as their history, to actually putting theory to practice. Students will have an opportunity to get hands on experience with an original 16mm bolex film camera, create claymation models, play with animation and editing software, and learn about the contemporary state of the film industry and what it takes to break through!

ANGEL ARtiStS Sketchbook Painting

$250 + $15 fee for supplies Week 5, Afternoon Instructor: Christine Wraga DeGennaro A sketchbook can be a place of your own.

Have fun and explore your creative side by filling your sketchbook with paintings!

We will paint people, animals, objects from nature, and views of faraway places in watercolors, inks, and tempera paint.

Students who have already taken this class are welcome – new projects abound!

Sketchbooks and paints will be provided.

Artists at Work

$250 + $20 fee for supplies Week 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, Morning (5) or Afternoon (1-4) Instructor: Elaine Ruiz ’15 Do you enjoy creating art and making crafts?

In this class we will be making bracelets, drawing with pencils and charcoal, working with watercolor paints, and more. There will be a new activity every day for students to enjoy! No art experience is needed for this class. Students will find ways to express their creativity and expand their knowledge of art.

Canvassing Your Creative Side

$250 + $35 fee for supplies Week 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, Morning Instructor: Meghan Englert ’15 Why pay for beautiful artwork when you can make it yourself? Create personalized, colorful, and unique artwork on canvas.There will be a new project each day with a variety of different techniques, using everything from paint to magazines to glitter! The possibilities are endless!

Don’t Buy It, DIY It!

tOP ChEFS! AHA Gourmet

$250 + $40 fee for supplies Week 1 or 2, Morning or Afternoon Instructor: Jennifer Cucchisi Aspiring chefs will learn how to prepare appetizers, snacks, meals and desserts that will be sure to impress their families and friends! Each day will have a different cooking theme and will end with students preparing lunch for the group. On the last day of the session, family will be invited to sample the food the students have prepared for them.

Experimental Baking

$250 + $20 fee for supplies Week 3 or 4, Afternoon Instructor: Jen Goodell Do you hesitate to try a new recipe because you’re afraid it will come out wrong?

You will have the opportunity to bake a variety of goods using substitutions that can help meet certain dietary restrictions, including gluten free and dairy free, or to simply make the recipe a little more healthy.

You will also learn how to determine nutrition facts – every experiment will be taste tested alongside the original recipe for comparison!

CRAFty ANGELS Scrapbooking

$250 + $20 fee for supplies Week 5, Morning Instructor: Stacie Gray ’89 Create a personalized, summer-themed scrapbook from start to finish! Make each page come alive by crafting wallpapers, symbols, clippings, photos, ribbons, and more into an album that will preserve all of your favorite moments forever!

$250 + $25 fee for supplies Week 2, 3, 4 or 5, Afternoon Instructor: Stacie Rinda ’14 Learn how to make all different things with easy products that can be bought at the store or found at home. Creations will include lamps, wall decor, jewelry, clothes, and much more!

DIY Before You Buy

$250 + $25 fee for supplies Week 1 or 2, Morning Instructor: Jillian McEvoy ’15, Samantha Viola ’15 Wouldn’t it be cool to make things that you would normally have to buy? This class lets you personalize and create various items that can be used for decoration, gifts, fashion, and more! Utilize your creativity with a wide range of activities – from making homemade makeup to designing calendars!

StEM FUtURES Creative Engineering

$250 + $15 fee for supplies Week 1 or 2, Afternoon Instructor: Jen Goodell Are you a creative problem solver? Let’s see what you can do when tasked with making a bridge out of newspaper or turning a mousetrap into a race car!

Whose bridge can hold the most weight?

Whose race car is the fastest? The only way to fail here is not to try! Come and see what amazing things you are capable of.

Exploring the Mind $250 Week 1, 3 or 4, Morning or Afternoon Instructor: Liz Quinones ’10 A fascinating look at human behavior: who people are and how they became that way.

Students will be exposed to the concepts, terminology, principles, and theories that comprise an introduction to Psychology.

Topics include Developmental, Social, and Abnormal Psychology and what psychologists’ research in those fields has taught us about the human mind today.

StEM FUtURES continued...

CSI Angels $250 Week 1, Morning Instructor: Martha Weinstein This course is a fun introduction to laboratory techniques used in forensic science. You will participate in hands-on laboratory based activities such as fingerprinting, analysis of footprints, hair, and crime scene details. By the end of the class you will be part of a forensics team that solves a crime. See if you can catch the criminal!

A Journey into the Human Body

Eco-Angels: It’s easy being GREEN! $250 + $5 fee for supplies Week 2, Morning Instructor: Susan Piersa ’11 Want to learn more about the small steps YOU can take to help the environment?

Wondering what climate change is, and how it affects you? All this and more will be covered in a thought-provoking class for those looking to make a difference for the environment. We will discuss the Catholic perspective on environmental protection, the environmental impact of meatless diets, eco-friendly shopping, and setting goals for eco-friendly living! By the end of this course you’ll truly be able to say, “It’s easy being green!”

$250 + $45 fee for supplies Week 2, 3, 4 or 5, Morning Instructor: Jenny Quispe ’15 Do you dream of someday becoming a doctor? Or do you just find the human body to be incredibly fascinating and want to learn more about it? In this course we will complete 3-D models of different organs like the brain, heart, stomach, and intestines while learning about the important functions and locations of these and other organs.

No prior knowledge of the human body is required; just come ready to learn more about your own body! With each lesson, you will also learn about some of the sicknesses/ disorders that could occur in a certain organ, as well as certain foods to help live out a healthy lifestyle. Be sure to bring a notebook & a pen/pencil, a water bottle, and your appetites! (fruits, guacamole & nachos, and munchkins will be served on various days in relation to the organs we’ll learn about!)

Upon completion of this course, each student will take home her own personal lab coat!

READy FOR StAGE & SCREEN Singular Sensations! (SUPEr SESSION) $500 + $10 fee for supplies Week 1, 2, or 5, Morning and Afternoon Instructor: Katie McSherry ’04 Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes in a theatrical production, how an audition works, or how actors memorize so many lines without messing up?

Come explore essential skills of the theatre including terminology, fun warm-up exercises, improv games, audition techniques, simple theatre choreography, and so much more!

All levels of experience are welcome – whether you are new to acting or an acting pro. This class will build confidence and skill, and you will get to work with the director of all of AHA’s productions. Please wear comfortable clothing – no flip-flops! Be sure to bring lunch and plenty of water.

(This course spans both the morning and afternoon session).

$250 + $15 fee for supplies Week 1 or 2, Afternoon Instructor: Megan Stagg ’15 Learn all the skills you need to become a successful actress through games! We will learn about improvisation and the different types of characters. A fun and unique take on Acting 101!

Angels Laugh Harder $250 Week 1, 3, 4 or 5, Morning Instructor: Sarah Owens ’11 Do you love to laugh? Are you intrigued by the people who make shows like Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Saturday Night Live so funny? Most importantly, do you love to make people laugh? Then this is the class for you! In this course, we’ll be learning the basics of improvisational team comedy; how to build scenes and characters that audiences will find absolutely hysterical, while supporting your teammates onstage.

Classes will consist of basic improv games and exercises. The course will conclude with a small show – parents and friends are welcome to attend!

Make Up A Laugh $250

Week 2, Morning Instructor: Angelica Paquali ’15 This course will help young girls to be more social by participating in fun, interactive activities such as acting improvisation games! Great way to have a laugh, come out of their comfort zones, and meet other girls!

WRitiNG Creative Writing $250

hUMANitiES Posso Parlare in Italiano $250

Week 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, Afternoon Instructor: Melanie Filocco ’08 Would you like to learn the Italian language and culture? If so, then this course is perfetto per voi—perfect for you! Every day we will learn the basics of Italian language (common nouns, grammar and verbs) and in the process discover more about Italy’s rich culture.

Bring a notebook and folder and get ready to viaggiare in Italia—travel to Italy!

Mythology $250 Week 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, Morning Instructor: Jonathan Blevis Come experience myths, fables, and fairy tales as you have never heard them before! We will talk about the unique symbols found in mythological stories, and create games, artwork, and new storylines of our own. Discover myths of the ancient world in a whole new way!

Presenting the Presidents! $250

Week 2, Morning Instructor: Catherine Piersa ’15 Learn about our nation’s most influential presidents the fun way! Each day we will cover two different presidents, such as Abraham Lincoln, Theodore roosevelt, and William Howard Taft. After learning some fun facts, we’ll do fun activities like creating our own countries, and planning our own inaugurations.

Week 1, Morning Instructor: Nancy Schneberger Dabble in drama, play with poetry and be mesmerized by memoir writing. Course will culminate with a reading of student work on Friday. No writing experience necessary.

When Creativity Strikes

$250 + $10 fee for supplies Week 2 or 3, Afternoon Instructor: Ava Bertone ’14 Do you enjoy reading and writing? Is English one of your favorite classes? In this creative writing class, we will examine what goes into the process of writing an effective short story. You will have the chance to do some creative writing of your own and even share it with the class at the end of the week, should you desire to do so! If you have any interest in honing your skills or just in trying out creative writing for the first time, this is definitely not to be missed!

Intro to Journalism $250 Week 1, Morning or Afternoon Instructor: Victoria Cabales ’15 Students will learn the basics of reporting and writing articles, skills that can be used in any field concerning research. The class will entail finding newsworthy article topics, presenting ideas to write, and covering different article styles. We’ll also learn how to make entertaining quizzes, advertisements, and segments in the style of Buzzfeed. A completed article will result at the end of the course. If you’re interested in improving your writing, this course is perfect for you!

SPORTS CAMPS COACH SUE LIDDY BASkETBALL CAMP June 29th – July 3rd 5th through 10th graders

Daily camp activities will include: individualized stations, team games, one on one, free throw shooting, and defensive/offensive moves. Members of the Holy Angels Varsity team, along with our school coaching staff, will be running this camp.

COACH MEGAN DELASANDRO SOCCER CAMP July 6th – July 10th 4th through 9th graders July 20th – July 24th 9th through 12th graders

Daily camp activities will include: warm-ups, skill drills, team practices and tournaments, and a team scrimmage. This would emulate typical practice drills that are conducted by our coaching staff during the season. The first week, each team will be coached by an AHA soccer alum along with our school coaching staff. The second week (for high school players only), a fitness trainer along with our Varsity coaches will be conducting the camp.

COACH BILL POTkULSkI LACROSSE CAMP July 13th – July 17th 4th through 10th graders

Daily camp activities will include: sport specific warmup exercises, fundamental stick skills, small group games, age appropriate strategies and drills, and small sided scrimmages.

Players will work together under the guidance of experienced coaches and players in a learning-based setting.

COACH COLLEEN SUROVICH VOLLEYBALL CAMP July 27th – July 31st 4th through 9th graders

Daily camp activities will include: stretching, warm-up, skill development drills, and game play which would encompass all the skills learned that day. This will emulate a typical practice that would be conducted during the season. Along with our Varsity coaching staff, the girls will be coached and mentored by a small staff of alumnae volleyball players.

Annie always loved science, but Holy Angels became the catalyst for her passion in Chemistry. A member of the Science National Honor Society, Annie volunteers in AHA’s peer tutoring program and spends many early mornings in the Chemistry Lab helping other students prepare for classes and tests. In addition to a heavy course load that includes four AP classes, she still makes time to play her cello. She shares her gift of music as Principal Cellist in the AHA Orchestra and as a member of Sister Act, a string quartet that performs at nursing homes in the area.

Annie aspires to earn a PhD in Chemistry and become both a professor and researcher, so she can teach while still pursuing new horizons in the field. Bring your energy to AHA and spark a reaction!
