The Academy of the Holy Angels, founded in 1879, is a private, Catholic, college preparatory school dedicated to excellence in the education of young women.

Grounded in the gospel message and in the tradition and charism of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, the Academy welcomes students from many different communities, ethnic backgrounds, and religious affiliations, appreciating the uniqueness of each individual while working towards the fulfillment of Jesus Christ’s prayer “that all may be one.”

Rooted in the conviction of the School Sisters of Notre Dame that “the world can be changed through the transformation of persons,” education at the Academy empowers each young woman to reach the fullness of her potential so that she, in turn, may share her gifts with others. The vision of a global community based on gospel values permeates life at the Academy, calling each young woman to leadership that advances justice, peace, and the integrity of creation. Holy Angels prepares its students to solve problems as old as building bridges and as new as nanoscience. The demanding standards for critical thinking, collaborative effort and creativity built into a Holy Angels education result in graduates who have the confidence, persistence and mindset to make the world a better place.

Prayer for Angelic Evening Loving God, joyfully we gather tonight to celebrate the good work You have accomplished over the years at the Academy of the Holy Angels.

S. Nonna Dunphy, trusting in You, courageously crossed the Hudson River and bravely scaled the Palisades, not far from this very spot, to begin this vibrant educational ministry.

Since that time, You have continued to guide the many sisters and lay people who have gladly labored to keep the mission alive.

Tonight we are especially thankful for S. Genevieve Kelleher who faithfully taught thousands of young women at the Academy, serving over six decades in both Fort Lee and Demarest.

We pray that the Academy may continue to be guided by the conviction of the School Sisters of Notre Dame that “the world can be changed through the transformation of persons.”

Bless all of us gathered this evening, and strengthen our community.

Bless our time together, may we enjoy the company of one another.

President’s Letter

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the entire Holy Angels community, it is my pleasure to welcome you here tonight as we celebrate our 20th annual Angelic Evening. We have returned to our roots here at this beautiful location overlooking the very Palisades that Sister Nonna Dunphy climbed almost 140 years ago when she founded the Academy of the Holy Angels in Fort Lee in 1879. Today we have embarked on an exciting chapter in our school’s history with the creation of Kelleher Hall and are truly blessed to have all of you with us in support of this endeavor. The proceeds from tonight’s program will directly benefit our students as we purchase equipment and furnishings for new art studios, labs and classrooms.

At Holy Angels, we chose these words from Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger, “In unity is our strength” as our theme for this school year. This sentiment certainly rings true on an evening such as this when we all come together to support our beloved school. Tonight’s celebration is the result of the hard work and support of so many members of our school community and beyond. Special thanks to Sister Genevieve Kelleher, Sister Eileen Casey, Sister Henrice Eckert, Sister Carole Tabano and Sister John Vianney Zullo for their assistance with tonight’s video presentation. Angelic Evening would never be possible without the extraordinary support of our school families and sponsors. To all those who supported us with tickets, journal ads, sponsorships and baskets, we are most grateful. Many parents took on leadership roles for this evening as committee chairs. We thank Danielle Borelli, Fatima Semedo, Mary Asencio, Rosanne Taufield, Lisa O’Donoghue, Colleen Corbett Staff ’89, Pauline Pellegrino, Nadine Behrens, Angela Luongo, Meaghan Williams, Kimberly Terjanian and Cecelia Sargenti for all their hard work. I am very grateful to Dorrie Voulgaris, Barbara Burklund, George Ballane, Kathleen DiGiulio, Rachel Gramuglia, Theresa Young, Priscilla Bishop, Julie Collins, Jillane Ferreira, Bob Shanney and Luis Mendoza who all worked to make tonight’s event a success. Many thanks to Patti Gorsuch who returns as our auctioneer tonight.

It is wonderful to be here tonight with members of the SSND Provincial Council, our Board of Trustees, AHA alumnae, our parents – past, present and future- along with our faculty, staff and friends. Your generous support will make a difference for all our students and allow the Academy of the Holy Angels, a sponsored work of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, to continue our work to prepare young women for a lifetime of intellectual curiosity, spiritual growth and service to others. The Academy of the Holy Angels received a significant leadership gift for the naming of the former convent building. This updated wing will be renamed “Sister Genevieve Kelleher Hall”. Once utilized as the primary residence and convent of the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND), Sister Genevieve Kelleher Hall will undergo a complete transformation and become a vital hub of interdisciplinary instructional space, artistic expression and sacred reflection and worship.

The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, has chosen to honor Sister Genevieve Kelleher, who served the Academy of the Holy Angels for 63 years from 1948 to 2011. Sister Genevieve epitomizes the mission of the School Sisters, “to

proclaim the Good News as School Sisters of Notre Dame, directing our entire lives toward that oneness for which Jesus Christ was sent.” Shewas the longest serving SSND to Holy Angels, and was a quiet, humble and reassuring presence to the entire school community.

During her tenure, she taught English, Religion, Biology, French and History, and was also the school librarian.

Sister Genevieve lived and worked in the convent, which will now bear her name.

She inspired thousands of students, who remember her with great affection. In so many ways she has been a constant and steady presence, spanning generations of students and alumnae. Now, the Sister Genevieve Kelleher Hall will extend that bridge to a new future for our facilities, helping to prepare our students to become leaders in their chosen field and transform the world.

Two new large multi-purpose instructional classrooms will be created and available to serve all students and all subject areas.

Restoration of the existing Chapel will include structural repairs and aesthetic improvements.

SECOND FLOOR The SSND Heritage Suite will serve as the leading seminar room for Religious Studies classes, senior seminars, and Campus Ministry. It will be steeped in tradition through tangible archives from both the Fort Lee and Demarest campuses.

The SSND Heritage Suite will include a conference room that will be used for student and alumnae gatherings.

In addition to administrative office space, small conference rooms will provide dedicated areas for confidential discussion and meetings with faculty, administrators and parents.

Our Auctioneer - Patti Gorsuch Upon graduating from Fordham University in 1975, Patti began her career at ABC Sports in the area of Sports Broadcasting. This professional path took her from covering the Olympics to “spanning the globe” with Wide World of Sports. Patti’s years as a Director earned her numerous Emmy Awards.

After transitioning to network news in 1980, Patti moved to Washington D.C. where she directed ABC’s World News Tonight. However, her love of sports eventually brought her back to New York as a Director for CBS Sports. This position was comprised of assignments that included NCAA Final Fours, NBA Finals, and NFL and NCAA Football games. It is also interesting to note that Patti holds the unique distinction of being the first woman to ever direct a network college football game.

On a personal note, Patti is married to Stephen Gorsuch, the Director of Broadcasting for the U.S. Tennis Association. She and Stephen have a son, Ryan, who graduated from Villanova and is now a network sports cameraman, and a daughter, Krissi, Angel class of ’08 and Fairfield University graduate who is currently a Production Manager with CBS Sports. After the arrival of her children, Patti drew on her talent working for major broadcast networks such as ABC, CBS and NBC. After over 30 years of a long and distinguished tenure in broadcasting, Patti retired and began a whole new career as our Athletic Director here at The Academy of the Holy Angels eight years ago.

For over 25 years, Patti has generously volunteered her skills as an auctioneer for numerous schools and charitable organizations.

Auction Rules

1. The winners of the Silent Auction items will be notified electronically of their successful bid as soon as the bidding closes.

2. The “Buy It Now” option exists for every Silent Auction item. Selecting the “Buy It Now” option will guarantee that item for the buyer and all bidding for that item will end.

3. The Auctioneer will acknowledge the successful Live Auction bidders.

4. Successful bidders in the Silent and Live Auctions will be expected to pay for their items the night of the event and will take their items with them. A paid in full receipt must be presented when picking up an item.

5. All successful bidders are responsible for contacting the donors to make arrangements for trips or any other items that require coordination. Contact information will be provided.

6. Effort has been made to describe the items accurately. All items are sold “as is” with noted restrictions, and without warranty or representation of any kind as to the correctness of description, authenticity or conditions. The Academy of the Holy Angels (AHA) and the auctioneer are not liable for misrepresentations.

7. By purchasing an item, the buyer waives any claims for liability against AHA, the auction committee, or its donors. Neither shall they be responsible for any personal injuries or damages to property that may result from the utilization of property or services sold.

8. Vouchers for services, vacation packages, restaurant gift certificates, theater or sports tickets, etc. must be used within the time limits or expiration dates as specified by the donor. The buyer understands that some auction items have limitations and/or specifications and/or conditions that may affect their value or use. It is the buyer’s responsibility to arrange for use of the purchased item within and according to such conditions as specified by the donor.

9. There will be a minimum bid for all items as noted. There will be no bid accepted in the Silent Auction that is below the established minimum bid indicated on the item description.

10. All bids for the Silent Auction will be accepted in dollar increments as indicated.

11. Live Auction increments are at the discretion of the Auctioneer.

12. The Silent and Live Auction items are sold by the committee, not by the donor, and proceeds benefit the Academy of the Holy Angels.

13. All Auction bidding is binding and all sales are final. Payment may be made by cash, check (payable to the Academy of the Holy Angels), American Express, Visa, or MasterCard. There are no refunds.

14. All donations and purchases are tax deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law.
