Balboa Theatre Hosts OLP Spring Sing The storied Balboa Theatre is the latest location of OLP’s forty-four year tradition – Spring Sing! The Balboa Theatre, named for the famed Spanish explorer, Vasco Nunez Balboa, was designed by Australian architect William H. Wheeler (1873-1956) in the Spanish and Moorish architectural style. Wurster Construction Company was charged with the task of the construction. The Theatre first opened for vaudeville and silent movies on March 28, 1924. The cost for the edifice was $1.5 million.

The original 426-pipe Robert Morton organ was installed in 1929, having been constructed in Van Nuys. The organ now in the Theatre is the second organ and it is referred to as the “Wonder Morton,” one of only five in the world. The original organ was removed in 1929 and relocated to the Fox Theater, now known as the Copley Symphony Hall. Sound movies became a hit in the 1930s and the Balboa Theatre took good advantage of America’s fascination with the “talkies” and remodeled the facilities to accommodate a society mesmerized by the burgeoning movie industry.

In 1930, the Theatre was renamed Teatro Balboa and became a popular place to view films originating in Mexico City. The Theatre was renovated prior to opening under the auspices of new management. At that time, the four chandeliers seen in the front of the Theatre were installed. Prominent Latin stars could be seen in the films and Teatro Balboa cemented its relationship with the diverse population of San Diego.

The Theatre also has served as an office building, a shopping center and was used by the United States Navy during World War II as bachelor officers’ quarters. Following the War, the officers’ quarters were converted into single dwellings. The Theatre was destined for demolishment in 1959 until the Russo family purchased the facility and renovated it to show movies once again.

Dance Advisor

In 1986, the City of San Diego purchased the building through eminent domain. The architectural firm of Westlake, Reed and Leskowsky oversaw the renovation. In 1972, the Theatre was placed on the San Diego Register of Historical Places. The Department of the Interior recognized the significant historicity of the Theatre and in 1996, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The celebrated Theatre was closed for more than 20 years and then was renovated and reopened in January, 2008. The facility retains significant aspects of its charming 1920s architecture.

Dance & Staging Consultant

The facility in which OLP students will “tread the boards” this evening has an audience capacity of 1,339. (Some believe that there were originally 1,513 seats to match the year in which Balboa sailed into the Pacific Ocean). The two 28-foot waterfalls in the front of the Theatre will cascade down this evening just as they did on opening night in 1924. Admire the mosaics in the front foyer of the Theatre from the original construction. The 90-foot ceilings will resound this evening with the strains of OLP singers, dancers and actors. Sit back, enjoy the Theatre, enjoy the drama, and enjoy “Eras.”

The judges have the difficult task of rating the four classes on the two nights of performance.

Their decisions are based on the following criteria:

Miss Spring Sing Freshman

Singing: projection, pitch and enunciation

Sophomore

Chorus Participation: chorus involved in every number, chorus knows movements and stage positions for each song, and originality

Senior

Choreography: dance appropriate to each song, dancers know steps and are together, creativity and novelty Costumes: actors’ costumes colorful, creative, appropriate to character, dancers’ costumes colorful, creative and appropriate to dance, chorus’ costumes color, creative and appropriate to script Acting: characterization appropriate to the character, physical gestures clear, articulation, blocking Story Line/Script: songs appropriate to script, script coherent in itself, adherence to theme Props/Sets: colorful, creative, appropriate to script, adherence to theme

Sophomores-20th Century At a seemingly normal wax museum, Haley and her best friend, Tiffany, embark on the ultimate babysitting trip gone wrong. When Haley loses her little sister, Annie, various wax figures come to life and assist the girls while teaching them the importance of friendship.

Seniors-Revolutionary You think you know about the American Revolution? Nay. Let’s say the Americans didn’t win the war—the British did. After losing the war, the Founding Fathers (and one Founding Mother) are forced to sign a document made by England’s monarch, King George III, which will strip them of their freedom forever. Left dejected and downtrodden, they must find a way to save the colonies and ensure their freedom. What will happen to the future of “America?”

Come travel to the year 3015 and meet Nova, a teenage girl researching a history project on the 1980’s who isn’t having much luck. Her teacher, Siri, helps by producing a real girl from 1985. Cindy comes in a time machine to teach Nova about the time period. However, Cindy wants to go explore the future. The two go off on an adventure to see what the world is like in the year 3015. They see “ancient ruins,” new technology, robots, and even aliens, and end up becoming friends in the process.
