New Clothes, New You?
Written by Lauren Suerth
Imagine this… you
' re a girl in high school in 2022 and you are flipping through a Vogue magazine. The pages radiate with beautiful models wearing new chic and stylish clothes. Your mind starts spinning with new ideas of ways to change your style. Maybe if you wear ripped jeans people will think you ' re cool and edgy, but maybe if you wear a shirt with your favorite show on it, people will think you ' re weird and nerdy. Should your new style be vintage, soft, bold, or streetwear? Should you wear the clothes that you don’t personally like, but other people do like? Will people treat you differently if you wear other clothes than what is considered “in style”? These are the thoughts that rush through a girl' s head every time they go shopping or are exposed to new trends. Should your personality change if your clothes change? This question should be very simple to answer, but for some girls it' s unclear. When you change your style you do not change as a person. Wearing new clothes doesn’t mean you have to pretend to be someone you aren’t. Some girls believe that if they change their style of clothes they will be treated differently and be included if they wear trendy clothes. If your motive for changing your style is to fit in with the cool kids, your head is in the wrong place. Wear what you love and what makes you feel confident! If you like it, wear it. Be yourself and wear what makes you feel special and beautiful. I know that it is basic and annoying to hear that. But in simple terms, who cares what other people think? They aren 't you. You are the priority, not them. Clothes are expressive, so wear what represents you.
Now that we have cleared up what it means to be yourself, let' s talk about some new fashion trends. Currently the 80’s looks are making a comeback, including scrunchies, baggy jeans, large graphic T-shirts and high top shoes. Personally I am glad all these trends are returning because I love this style of clothing. Another trend is to have everything cropped and to reveal a little bit of skin. Sweaters, shirts and jackets can all come cropped now. Fashion trends change so frequently it' s hard to keep up with. By the time you get your hands on the shirt that everyone wanted and that was out of sale everywhere, it’s out of trend. Shopping can be so difficult! So just enjoy the journey of shopping for clothes and have fun trying new things! Just remember that clothes don’t change who you are.
