Brothers and Friends of Acacia,

Higher Education, I learned which aspects of current college students’ lives were negatively impacted by COVID-19, according to the Penn State Center for Collegiate Mental Health.

Author Dan Millman is quoted as saying, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old but on building the new.” This quote gives me hope. To me, it speaks to the value in looking forward, as opposed to lamenting the past and any mistakes we’ve made, in any given situation.

The quote reminds me of the observation that was illuminated by Viktor Frankl, in his famous book, “Man’s Search for Meaning”. Summarized, the key point in this book is, “Between stimulus and response, man (my note: or woman) has the freedom to choose.” In other words, we can always choose our attitude and response to any set of circumstances. We cannot control what happens to us, but we can control how we will respond to it. Frankl further notes, “What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for a worthwhile goal, a freely chosen task.” The “striving and struggling for a worthwhile goal, a freely chosen task” part of that sentence reminds me of each of our memberships in Acacia Fraternity. Seeing the success of our international organization, our chapters, and our members is a worthwhile goal, and a task we all freely chose. Acacia Fraternity has created Strategic Plans in 2004, 2010, 2014, 2018, and we are currently developing a new 2022 Strategic Plan. For a report on progress of the 2018 plan, you can go to acacia.info/asp-18-data. I am proud of the work of our chapters, our alumni volunteers, our Headquarters Staff, and our International Council, and I think you will be also. While on a recent webinar about Trends in

Almost 70% of students listed Mental Health. About 55% of students listed Motivation or Focus. Other areas above 52% are Loneliness, Academics, Missed experiences. Other items a little further down the chart are Career/ Employment, Relationships, Financial, and Health Concerns (for self and others). As I mentioned in the previous Triad, I believe that fraternities are uniquely suited and perfectly positioned to provide the “social safety net” that undergraduate men need right now. Giving us someone to talk to about uncomfortable topics. Someone to walk beside as we pursue our degrees. Someone to check in on you if a brother notices you haven’t seemed like yourself lately. These things are the core of fraternity, and an integral part of our beloved fraternity. We believe that it is important to clearly articulate the value of Acacia Fraternity, and you can find more information at acacia.org/value. In closing, let’s choose the attitudes that are informed by our past, but crystal clear focused on the creation of a positive future. We hope to see you in Atlanta for Conclave 2022! Registration info and hotel booking link can be found at acacia.org/conclave. Fraternally,

Patrick McGovern, Indiana ‘99 Executive Director Acacia Fraternity

CHAPTER ETERNAL

WINTER 2022

L E T T E R F R O M T H E _

I N T E R N A T I O N A L P R E S I D E N T _

Greetings Brothers, I hope all of you and your families are doing well! This has certainly been a wild year and each time we think we are able to return to the familiar, something new seems to arise, causing us to backpeddle. But with each hurdle comes an opportunity to rise higher in order to jump over it. I truly believe that it has been together that we have met and overcome these challenges. I am reminded of a quote, often attributed as being an African Proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” There are many examples that show this quote to be true and applicable.

In the Netflix documentary, 14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible (also known as Project Possible), 5 Nepalese climbers seek to climb the 14 tallest mountains in the world. They needed each other to get to the summit of the world’s 14 tallest peaks in only 7 months time. A team first approach was needed to survive the extreme cold, wind, and avalanches. This task usually requires 2 months to summit one 8,000+ meter peak and the fastest time to do this before was seven years! But Nepalese climber, Nimsdai “Nims” Purja, wanted to achieve something to inspire the human race. He achieved this goal by working together. The James Webb Space Telescope, often referred to as the successor to the Hubble Telescope, is the most advanced space telescope ever developed. It truly is a technological marvel that will see farther than any telescope ever has before (and it’s named after an Acacian!). This project needed teamwork and more than 1200 scientists and engineers from NASA, The Canadian Space Agency, and the European Space Agency working together in order to be successful. Acacia also depends on many hands to make heavy loads light. Our chapters utilize the executive officer boards to help lighten the 3

WINTER 2022

load for the Venerable Dean in regards to chapter leadership. The most successful recruiting chapters take advantage of ChapterBuilder where all the members are helping fill the potential name lists. Healthy organizations are comprised of individuals that are accountable to oneself and another. They work together to ensure the longevity of a chapter. Every member is responsible for the success of a chapter - it’s easy to look at a successful chapter and only see the results, but we must look at the process and the culture we develop. Even if one person somehow manages to make a chapter successful for a shot time, the longevity of the chapter is not ensured; if we want to go far, everyone must work together! Beyond the active chapter, we also need alumni to remain involved with their initiated or local chapters in order to ensure the continuity that contributes to the longevity and success of a chapter. If we want our chapters to succeed, as alumni, we must spend more time offering a hand rather than pointing a finger. Traditionally, we have leaned on one dedicated alumni advisor to fill the role of the Chapter Advisor, but many hands make light work and we are now looking to have Alumni Advisory Teams in all chapters in order to ensure the success of the advising structure as well as our chapters. Acacia Fraternity is primed for success in the coming years. As one of the fastest growing fraternities, we need everyone working together to not just go fast, but go far. Whatever type of support you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Take care and I hope to see you all at the 62nd Biennial Acacia Conclave in Atlanta, Georgia from August 3-7, 2022 where we can see each other and strengthen the ties that bind! Fraternally,

Scott H. Meyer, Saint Cloud ’89 International President Acacia Fraternity

ACACIA FRATERNITY INTERNATIONAL MEMBERSHIP STATISTICS

Per Caps Basic Line Graph v2

On the left is a graph of the total membership of Acacia Fraternity over the last ten years. While the organization has had it’s ebbs over the years, prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the organization was at it’s largest in over a decade!

In 2012, the total membership of the organization sat at 1,054 members. This remained fairly steady until 2014 to 2015 when there was a number of chapter closures at Louisiana State, Miami of Ohio, Michigan, & Pittsburg-Johnstown, along with a general anti-fraternity sentiment following a number of incidents around the country.

From 2015 to 2017 the fraternity experienced explosive growth with a greater than 10% increase in membership. While there was another slight downturn from 2017 to 2018, another period of significant growth followed until 2020 when the world changed in March of 2020. The decline from 2020 to 2021 was due to the closure of our Indiana, Missouri, & Central Oklahoma Chapters, along with a decline in overall membership caused by campus closures and lockdowns throughout the country.

James Webb Space Telescope

H

umankind has long been fascinated with the cosmos and the study of astronomy. In fact, our mentor, Pythagoras, was the first astronomer to suggest that the movement of the planets, sun, moon and stars could be described by whole numbers and mathematical precision. Looking up at the night sky, many have wondered what lies beyond the view of the naked eye. This wonder has driven the development of countless technological advancements to enter and explore the final frontier that is outer space. From the telescope to space shuttles, our quest to understand what is beyond the borders of our planetary realm has not only fed our curiosity, but also improved our daily lives. Now, one of the greatest technological marvels to ever be created has launched into space to explore the early universe – and it is named after an Acacian! The James Webb Space Telescope is the most advanced imaging device ever created.

13

WINTER 2022

Developed in an ambitious partnership between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), this international endeavor required countless hours of dedication from over 1200 of the world’s top engineers, technicians, and scientists. Webb is the largest and most complex telescope ever sent into space and is considered the successor to the Hubble Telescope. It will allow us to look further into the universe than we ever have before, which also means looking further into the past! Webb will study every phase in the history of our universe, from the first rays of light after the Big Bang, to the evolution of our galaxy and solar system. “To seek the truth and give the light” is a phrase all Acacians are familiar with, so it is fitting that the greatest tool humankind

has to seek out the truth of the universe is named after one of our brothers, James Edwin Webb, North Carolina ’27 (pictured at left). Brother Webb was the 2nd Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) appointed by President John F. Kennedy to undertake the goal of landing an American on the Moon before the end of the 1960s. He served from February 14, 1961 – October 7, 1968 and oversaw NASA under the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. While he wasn’t a scientist or an engineer, as a businessman and attorney – and Director of the Bereau of Budget and Undersecretary of State under President Harry Truman – he was the perfect candidate to navigate the bureaucratic and highly political scene of Congress to garner support for the fledgling NASA which was founded only a few years prior to his appointment in 1958. While reluctant at first to take the position, Brother Webb was the perfect candidate. He was instrumental in lobbying for support for NASA from Congress and under his leadership, NASA developed from a loose collection of research centers to the premier organization for astronomy and planetary exploration. It was due to his enormous contributions to this field that the telescope that serves as the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope was renamed in his honor in September 2002 (it was formerly known as the “Next Generation Space Telescope”).

exploration, turning our imagination into reality. Indeed, he laid the foundations at NASA for one of the most successful periods of astronomical discovery. As a result, we’re rewriting the textbooks today with the help of the Hubble Space Telescope, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and ... the James Webb Space Telescope.” What is especially interesting is that the telescope is comprised of a gold mirror with eighteen hexagons and a black backing…while this is just a coincidence, we can’t help but think that the geometric configuration along with black and gold is befitting of a telescope meant to seek the truth and named after an Acacian. So the next time you look to the heavens, think of Brother Webb! Interested in learning more? Go to jwst.nasa.gov to read more and even see Where Is Webb right now in its calibration process and location in space!

NASA’s tenth administrator, Sean O’ Keefe, said of Webb, “He took our nation on its first voyages of WINTER 2022

Acacia’s Two Minute Warning A couple of minutes that change(d) your life.

Acacians who followed the Indiana Pacers in the sixties will remember Reb Porter. A popular disc jockey, he spent 38 years as the public address (PA) announcer. Porter created a Pacers tradition with his unique call of the NBA’s mandatory two-minutes remaining announcement: “Two minutes, two-ahh!” Why is there even a two-minute warning? The origins of the two-minute warning is from the early days in the National Football League when the officiating crew kept the official game time. Its purpose was a checkpoint to ensure that the teams knew how much time remained in the game. Since the late 1960s, the NFL stadium clock has been official. By that time, television was an essential factor in the NFL, so the two-minute warning was retained as a commercial break and to serve as “tension building” time. It has become an important part of the game’s flow. Not to be outdone, the Canadian Football League (CFL) has a three-minute warning. Acacia has its own “tension building” three-minute warning - two for most of us, or so it seemed! You may remember it from your attempt to master geometry. For many, it was a game-changer - three minutes that changed your life. Induction into Acacia became a laboratory for life, teaching you teamwork and being part of something bigger than yourself. It led to lifelong friendships and memories that stood the test of time. In the movie, Field of Dreams, the character Moonlight Graham said, “You know, we don’t recognize the most significant moments of our lives while

they’re happening. Back then, we thought, well, there’ll be other days. I didn’t realize that that was the only day.” Brotherhood in Acacia ensures “there’ll be other days!” Fraternities break down an overwhelming college atmosphere and create a unique and special environment - a home away from home. It all begins with the Ritual - and for Acacians, those momentous three minutes. Peyton Manning gave a most memorable acceptance speech at his Canton, Ohio induction to the NFL Hall of Fame. (BTW, Robert E. Forsythe, Ohio ‘49, was the original architect for the HOF.) Whereas his topic was football, I heard Fraternity. He said, “The future of this game is ours to shape… Remember, a legacy is only worthwhile when there is a future to fuel.” The future of Acacia is ours to shape. Thanks to the generosity and dedication of our alumni, there is a future to fuel. Visit the ensuing pages to read more on how you can continue to pay it forward or utilize the remittance envelope in this Triad to support our ongoing mission, Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders. While at it, take three minutes reflecting on the brotherhood formed during your undergraduate days and the bonds that hold strong today. Is geometry an easy subject for you? Give me threeminutes and try me on the 47th and see! Fraternally, Darold W. Larson, Executive Director Acacia Fraternity Foundation

To Strengthen the Ties Your time in college was undoubtedly highlighted by your experience as an Acacian, and you no doubt want to ensure our brotherhood lives on for future generations. Whether you want to support a specific Acacian program, chapter fund, or scholarship fund, there are many ways you can have a meaningful impact on the lives of Acacia undergraduates. Perhaps the most significant way to help the Fraternity realize its vision of providing training, support, and guidance to every undergraduate member is to create your Acacian legacy through a planned gift to the Acacia Fraternity Foundation.

Why Future Gifts Matter When you make a planned gift to the Acacia Fraternity Foundation, you: • • •

17

Provide us with solid financial footing. Help us plan for the future with confidence. Ensure we can adjust our offerings to meet the changing needs of our Fraternity.

WINTER 2022

How Can You Make a Difference? There are several ways you can make a planned gift, many of which offer you benefits in return. A few of the most popular gifts include: •

Giving a gift in your will or living trust. This gift costs you nothing today and is easy to change as needed.

Naming the Acacia Fraternity Foundation as a beneficiary of your retirement plan assets. A simple form is all that’s needed to make this gift.

Donating appreciated stock. When you give stock that is worth more now than when you bought it, you can avoid capital gains tax.

Establishing a life income gift. Give a gift and receive steady income in return. You may even qualify for a tax deduction in the year you make your gift.

Every type of gift has advantages. Whatever your needs, we can help you find the best solution to accomplish your goals.
